The secondary disc was used in a lab rig to boot off of and test something after which the primary was replaced and the system was booted off of. It saw the secondary as more recent and dropped the primary so, the secondary was removed and the primary was used to boot. Figuring that made it more recent, even after it was restarted with the "now older" secondary, it still wants to drop the primary? W/o blowing out the secondary (it can't be hot added) how can I force the primary to not be dropped? I'm amused that even with it used to boot solo, and hence timestamps validating it as most recent, md will only use the secondary to start from? Thanks! jlc

DNS issue.. help ?!

Hi All, i have DNS configured on my centos 5.2 server. it's all working fine, right now i want to change the main public dns from one IP to another to do some testing (the new public dns ip has records which the old one doesnt have and it's done as such for testing) so i got into /etc/resolv.conf and changed the first nameserver to the NEW public DNS. /etc/init.d/network restart /etc/init.d/named restart when i issue an nslookup example.com ON the dns server, i get the exact IP i want to do testing on. but when i do nslookup example.com on the clients machine. the website resolves to another IP ( the one set in the initial public dns records) is there any other changes i need to do for the DNS server redirects its requests to the new public dns ?

Xen, Amazon, and /proc/cmdline

Amazon (or perhaps Amazon's configuration of Xen) forces a machine to come up at run level 4, regardless of what's in /etc/inittab. I've looked through /etc/rc.sysinit and /etc/rc.d/rc, to determine which (if any script) looks at /proc/cmdline and forces a particular run level, but to no avail. It seems that /sbin/init does the forcing. Can anyone confirm that /sbin/init reads /proc/cmdline to overwrite /etc/inittab? I can't seem to find any reference in man pages or searching the web. Rolodex for linux

As I migrate away from Windows, I need to move the data out of my old rolodex program (written in Pascal back in the late 80's) into something that runs on Linux. The data is stored in csv lines in a text file. That old custom program output the data to rolodex cards on a pin-feed dot matrix printer. (Yea...I'm dating myself). Anyway, does anyone know of a decent rolodex program on linux that also has the capability of printing to the 3.5" wide rolodex cards? DaveM

CentOS port forwarding?

Dear All I have my CentOS server at @172.16.17.100 and my remote network element at @ 172.16.17.110 and both ones have Internet access . I need to virtually put the remote network element on the same LAN as my CentOS server to be touched with . In my application , both the ip addresses are as invalid ones and I cannot change them . Can you please let me know if there is a settings on the CentOS server that can do the job or just the port forwarding on the attached gateway can be used ? Thank you

autofs with nfs plus local directories

Hi, I have a autofs configured to mount home dir from NFS. All user accounts lookup is done using LDAP. All is working fine with this setup. Now I need to create a local user account and have its home dir also on local system. So I added a new user account and changed auto.home as follows: test1 -rw,hard,intr /home/test1 * -rw,hard,intr nfs1:/export/users/& But this stuff is not working. If I change test1 user's home dir to '/opt/test1', it works fine. Log messages indicate: 'umount_autofs_indirect: ask umount returned busy /home'. I have some LDAP users logged on to system. Do I need to tell them to logout to successfully reload autofs? Any clues on this would be really helpful. Thanks, CS.

Kerberos integration in directory server

Hi, Got some issues regarding Kerberos and Directory Server and hope someone can help me out. Used these for the configiruation : http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/Deployment_Guide-en-US/ch-kerberos.html http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/dir-server/8.1/install/index.html Server : CentOS 5.4 with Kerberos and Directory Server installed Client : CentOS 5.4 I use putty to connect to the client, which authenticates against the server. Using Kerberos or LDAP worked perfectly (using system-config-authentication on the client for configuration) The only thing that doesn't seem to work is the kerberized version of the login via LDAP on the directory Server. Shouldn't I get a Kerberos ticket for that ? Bash script for backup

Hello guyz! I'm new here, and this is my very first truble... I need a script that will backup & compress the folder /media/system in the folder /media/backups But that's not the problem, I need that only the last 7 backups (last 7 days, yeah I know, cronjob...) will stay in that folder... The script need: 1 - Compress folder /media/system 2 - Store in /media/backups 3 - Name the compressed backup like day_month_year.tar.gzip 4 - Check the other backups and delete backups older than 7 days.. Can some one help me? Tanks!

any significant differences between centos and OEL?

someone just pointed out to me that there is a distro called "oracle enterprise linux" which is effectively a re-branded RHEL, so i'm curious -- has anyone here used both centos and OEL and would there be any differences that would be worth caring about? the only thing i can think of that might be worthwhile is that OEL might change some of the default kernel parms thru /etc/sysctl.conf that make that distro more appropriate for running large oracle databases. beyond that, i have no idea. thoughts? rday -- ======================================================================== Robert P. Firewire issues with CentOS/RH?

I read in another forum that CentOS has problems with Firewire drives, something along the lines of whenever a new kernel is booted, the drives are gone. Can anyone elaborate on that? I don't use Firewire drives (at all, yet), but information about this would be nice to have.... Thanks. mhr

Automatically check into SVN?

I would like to automatically check in a directory to SVN, to maintain the changes that area made to those txt files over time. These files are configuration files, and it would be good to be able to revert back by simply checking out the older versions. But I would to check in the files every files minutes, and I'm sure SVN will not use up any disc space, unless there are any changes. I already have an svn server up and running in production -- Any help?

iPod Touch/iPhone VPNs with CentOS.

I am looking at options for VPN connections from iPhones and iPod Touches to CentOS systems. We use OpenVPN for connections with Windows, Mac OS X, and other Linux systems, but there don't appear to be any OpenVPN clients for iPhones (presumably because there are no tun/tap interfaces available yet). My experiences getting IPsec running on CentOS systems with OpenVPN have not been pretty. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks. streamripper & CentOS?

I am trying to build streamripper from source, I don't see rpms available for it. I have all the parts of yum groupinstall 'Development Tools' in place. rpm shows that a 2.5.* is in use # rpm -q glibc glibc-2.5-42.el5_4.3 Any attempt do get past the ./configure for streamripper fails checking for GLIB - version >= 2.16.0... no *** Could not run GLIB test program, checking why... *** The test program failed to compile or link. See the file config.log for the *** exact error that occured. This usually means GLIB is incorrectly installed. configure: error: Glib 2.16 or greater required After a lot of googling, I see some people on Ubuntu seem to have been missing a glibc-dev: http://sourceforge.net/projects/streamripper/forums/forum/19083/topic/34574… but I don't see that available for me to pull from yum, and trying variants via: [root@localhost streamripper-1.64.6]# yum provides */libglib* does not pull up what I seem to need here either. I feel I must be missing some path, but I cannot find it. I built this fine on my BSD machines, and this app is part of the available install base for e.g. Ununtu and FreeBSD etc-- it is not as if this is esoteric. Does this not build under CentOS? or am I missing something really straightforward. I searched the forums via google and find really no one talking about this, so either I'm missing some path or something obvious, despite looking, or it's just kown/assumed to not work. totem: something wrong with gstreamer-plugins-ugly

When running totem to play a move (e.g. mpeg-1 file), it fails with the message: "A MPEG-1 System Stream demuxer plugin is required to play this stream, but not installed." After reading docs and trying various things I've reduced the source of the problem to the package gstreamer-plugins-ugly-0.10.11-1.el5.rf.i386.rpm # rpm --rebuilddb # rpm -q libdvdread libdvdread-4.1.3-1.el5 # rpm -i gstreamer-plugins-ugly-0.10.11-1.el5.rf.i386.rpm error: Failed dependencies: libdvdread.so.3 is needed by gstreamer-plugins-ugly-0.10.11-1.el5.rf.i386 And, after erasing libdvdread and trying to install both packages in one command, I get pretty much the same contradictory error message: # rpm -iv libdvdread-4.1.3-1.el5.i386.rpm gstreamer-plugins-ugly-0.10.11-1.el5.rf.i386.rpm error: Failed dependencies: libdvdread.so.3 is needed by gstreamer-plugins-ugly-0.10.11-1.el5.rf.i386 There's no problem installing libdvdread by itself: # rpm -iv libdvdread-4.1.3-1.el5.i386.rpm Preparing packages for installation... libdvdread-4.1.3-1.el5 # rpm -q libdvdread libdvdread-4.1.3-1.el5 So how are people getting totem to play movies? tia. -- Without music, life would be a mistake. --Friedrich Nietzsche

Centos 5.2 mysql build

Greetings, I wanted to enable blackhole and CSV engine in the mysql server so downloaded the SRPM from Centos Site, setup the rpmbuild envronment with mighty help from the our own Russ's Owlriver website and tried building it. I have a 5.2 centos box on which I need to enable this so took the 5.2 SRPM (mysql-5.0.45-7.el5.src.rpm) from vault.centos.org.(mysql The Build did not complete throwing errors during testing about unable to connect using ssl or something. I tried from 5.4 SRPM at least the build went thru. Was 5.0.45 srpm broken? or did I get it horribly wrong somewhere as it is my first attempt to build from srpm. Now I have a situation wherein the PHDs refuse to work with the Mysql 5.0.77 (y'know those typical silly scared rabbits who will never move from status quo no matter what) I fished around and found that there was a BIG thread on this issue. I understand it is a upstream issue. But in the EOD, I need a tested stuff not homegrown one (according to the PHDs and I am new in this job, never mind I will be completing 26 years in IT field on 3rd Feb...). Has anybody come across this error? if so how it was mitigated? The issue here is we need to show it working on centos and then when going live the production will be switched over to RHEL (Sorry Centos guys... That's the way this Indian (1/6th) part of the world goes about: kinda "successful POC first and then I give hard cash"). Thanks and Regards, Rajagopal

There is two disadwantages with it: first, it's quite untrivial task to get it working under Centos, and second, it doesn't work anymore :) >From official fuse-gmailfs site (richard.jones.name): Gmail Filesystem no longer works with the latest Gmail interface, and will not be maintained in the future. BTW, according to google EULA, it's illegal to use gmail it that way. Gmail team could even disable you account. I would suggest you to take a look at dropbox, which provides 2-5Gb online storage with full desktop integration on lin/win/mac. At the moment it's quite tricky to install in under CentOS, because it uses python 2.5 (CentOS has python 2.4), but it's achievable: http://wiki.dropbox.com/TipsAndTricks/CnetOS-KDE-Install . Fancy GUI isn't working at the moment. I'm currently backporting it to CentOS, and I would like to include it in rpmforge (it's distributable). I estimate it in about one week. I have a project using Git on machine A. I'm running a Centos server on machine B. I'd like to "publish" the project on machine B (mainly for my own use, so I can access it from various sites). I've asked about this on a Git mailing list, but haven't understood the replies. In particular, a couple of people suggested gitolite, but when I examined this I couldn't make out what it did. As will be obvious I am a Git newbie, having been reared on SVN. voice chat on centos with gtalk users.

hi all, i have a centos 5.4 64 bit system running on the base hardware of my system and have windows machines running in virtual in vmware workstation. i need something to *voice chat* with *GTALK* users. In the windows VMs i can install gtalk for windows which does support voice chat, but the problem there is the microphone doesnt get detected inside the VMs. incase of centos installed on the base i can get the microphone but i can find a utility to voice chat. i have heard of empathy, but i cant find a yum repository for it. anyway i can get the mic detected inside the VM? or any utility for voice chat with Gtalk users in centos ?? can anyone plz help me with it? thanks, Arvind

[root@laptop ~]# i get the above error. i have a WPA encryption in my router. infact earlier i used to get a connected status when i tried to connect it with wpa_gui once. but later i think i have screwed the config a bit sorry for the long post... can someone plz guide me from here?

OT: free DNS service?

I have been using a free DNS service for the past seven (7) years. This morning, at 4 A.M., , I changed the "A" record for one of my web sites, to point to an IP address on a different server, so I could test. After watching the TTL count down from 3600 to zero, with the "dig" command, it then reset to 3600, but still resolved to the original IP address. :-) I set the "A" record back to the original IP address and filed a Support Ticket with that company, but if they cannot get this to work properly again, I need a new DNS service that is free. Recommendations? (BTW, the Domain is registered with GoDaddy, but not hosted there, so it appears I cannot use their "Total DNS" service). TIA! Here's an odd one: I installed apcupsd, and it works with most of our UPSs. I'd swear it worked on this one. Then I replaced the Gin-u-wine APC batteries, which were dead, with new ones, non-APC. They're just dumb batteries, no chips or whatever on them. If I hook it up using a serial cable, I can get info. If I hook it up the way I had it, with APC's weird USB cable - and this is the way it was working before - it fails. I run apctest, and it gives me: Attached to driver: usb sharenet.type = DISABLE cable.type = USB_CABLE You are using a USB cable type, so I'm entering USB test mode mode.type = USB_UPS Setting up the port ... Hello, this is the apcupsd Cable Test program. This part of apctest is for testing USB UPSes. Getting UPS capabilities...SUCCESS Then I tell it to do the self test, and get: This test instructs the UPS to perform a self-test operation and reports the result when the test completes. Clearing previous self test result...CLEARED Initiating self test...INITIATED Waiting for test to complete...ERROR READING STATUS 12.976 apcupsd: linux-usb.c:802 HIDIOCGREPORT for function SelftestStatus failed. ERR=Input/output error Now, I've even found an rpm that was *not* two+ years old, as what comes with CentOS 5.4, current update, and get the same error. In addition, even though the batteries are fully charged, and the info I get via the serial cable says they're at 100%, the red "change battery" light is still on on the front of the UPS. Hitting the "test" button doesn't help; I was hoping running the self-test that's available via the USB connection would reset it, but I can't do that. Any clues for the poor? mark
