Hey, Gang! To ensure that a file hasn't been corrupted or tampered with, you can use rpm to verify the package it came from. Well, I found this: rpm -Vv util-linux .... ........ /usr/bin/cal S.?..... /usr/bin/chfn ........ /usr/bin/chrt S.?..... /usr/bin/chsh .... Does anyone else get this? Evolution search menu

When I switched my main desktop computer from Fedora to Centos, I moved my email from Sylpheed to Evolution. (Reason: Sylpheed for Centos doesn't boldface unread messages in the message list box and newer Sylpheed versions won't compile on Centos.) Evolution works fine, but I can't figure out how to get rid of the "previous/next" buttons that appear at the bottom of the Evolution window after I do a search. Detail: I enter a search term in the "Search" box over the message list. Two buttons "previous" and "next", plus a "match case" checkbox and "Matches: X" (where X is the number of matches found in the message) appear at the bottom of the Evolution window, just below the message text. That bar is fine while I'm doing the searching, but the only way I can get rid of that after I complete my search is to exit and re-load Evolution. yum quit working in CentOS 5.4 x86_64

Have been running 5.4 x86_64 for a couple of months now. Every once in a while, I would get a notice that updates were available. It appears that about 3 weeks ago, yum stopped notifying me of updates. Over that time, I've manually done a 'yum update' from a command line, with an output that there are no updates. I know this cannot be true, because I watch the 'centOS-announce Digest' messages come through and see that there are updates for my installation. I tried 'yum clean all' followed by another 'yum update' and still no updates are listed as available. NIS failover

We just updated our configuratiosn to have multiple NIS servers, when we initiated a test of client failover, we were disapointed. It seemed that the only way to get a filaover was to /etc/init.d/ypbind restart. Hi, I am configuring firewall for NFS. I see that statd and mountd start at random port. Is there any way to force it to start at specific port each time. The '-p ' option would work, but how do I configure it to start at specific port number each time. I mean where do statd and mountd look for default configuration options? Any clues? - CS.

Security advice, please

I run chkrootkit daily. For the first time I've got reports of a problem - Checking `bindshell'... INFECTED (PORTS: 1008) The page http://fatpenguinblog.com/scott-rippee/checking-bindshell-infected- ports-1008/ suggests that this might be a false positive, so I ran 'netstat - tanup' but unlike the report, it wasn't famd on the port. It was tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:1008 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 3797/rpc.mountd It looks as though certain services are marked as suspicious when they grab port 1008. I tried to find how to restart the service, but without success, but a reboot put rpc.mountd onto another port, and chkrootkit no longer reports a problem. (I had rebooted last evening after an update including a kernel version.) I think that it really was a false alarm, but I would really like to know how I could restart that service without rebooting. system-config-services didn't do the trick, and I simply didn't know what else to try. i386 and x86_64 packages on an 64bit system after fresh install - why?

Hi, I recetly set up a brand new fres Centos 5.4 64 bit system and found a lot of i386 packages installed along with the x86_64 packages. My questions: Why is this done? May I remove the i386 packages? (rpm -e ....) I have updated my local repo and see that centos.plus has the new kernel available. yum update does not get it yum clean all and another try and still it does not find it what am I missing?? only recent change to yum.repos was the addition of failovermethod=priority anyone else having probs? flummoxed at this point

Help With Glade and C5 64-bit?

I have a user with C5.4 64-bit, fully updated, performed a yum install glade, it claimed to have installed everything, but we cannot get it to run. Neither whereis nor locate revleal an executable. We obtained the latest glade source from the project's web site, attempted to configure it, until it complained of needed dependencies, namely gtk+ (newer than what was on the system). So I got the newest source from the gtk project web site, tried to compile it, until it complained of at least needing a newer glib. So I grabbed the newest glib, compiled and installed, ran ldd, and tried gtk+ source compile again. I still claimed glib wasn't new enough. What am I missing? I followed the glade install notes as best I could. Thanks for any help/insight. If need be, I'll look for a glade forum to post to, but since this _is_ Centos 5 spedific for the machine I'm working on, I felt it appropriate to ping this list first. Thanks. Scott

Silly question x64 vs i386

I have a really silly question... but just want to ask... I have one box on my home network that is x86_64 capable... My other boxes are all i386. As this x86_64 machine can, at most, house 4 GB of RAM (currently only has 1 GB) - is there any advantage to my running x86_64 on that machine instead of i386... Problems with nss_ldap - where to start?

I've been unsuccessfully trying to get nss_ldap to work. I've chased down hundreds of google searches over the last 3 days, and I can't seem to get a centos system to authenticate against ldap. Every daemon on the system is running into the same problem: nss_ldap: could not search LDAP server - Server is unavailable sshd, nscd, httpd, you name it.. slapd is clearly running, telnet localhost 389 actually connects me to it. I've run authconfig, /etc/sysconfig/authconfig agrees. I'm at a complete and utter loss. I've followed every how-to out there, RH, Openldap, Debian, FreeBSD I can verify ldap is working, I can't seem to get any PAM applications to use it. Hello, First time I install Centos (5.4) on a consumer Intel Motherboard. I've done 5+ AMD (am2 form factor) installs. The MB is Gigabyte ep45-ud3r with a CPU:Intel LGA 775 E7600 wolfdale I cracked the lm_sensors nut with 2 modules and lm_sensors from elrepo. The modules were kmod-coretemp kmod-it87 Now I'm trying to get cpuspeed to behave, or at least understand what it's doing. Here's my bios objects ------------ snip dmesg--------- $sudo dmesg | grep state ACPI: CPU0 (power states: C1[C1] C2[C2] C3[C3]) ACPI: Processor [CPU0] (supports 8 throttling states) ACPI: CPU1 (power states: C1[C1] C2[C2] C3[C3]) ACPI: Processor [CPU1] (supports 8 throttling states) ---------- unsnip ---------- In the advanced bios menu I enabled all the switches for CPU state management. If not enabled there is no acpi. My CPU is OC'ed to 3.74 Ghz The Intel state management hands it off to the kernel with max frequency of 2.8Ghz but bogoMips is unchanged and reflects OC'ed value. There are supposed to be 8 throttling states, but acpi-cpufreq (driver) only uses 3 states (1.6 Ghz - 2.8 Ghz). Has anyone found another driver to work better? I tried speedstep-centrino but it refuses to load. There is also p4-clockmod too, but I had doubts about it. Is this the best I can do? So far benchmarks are very good and the acpi power management does not hurt them. -- Mark

I have been asked to monitor tunnel bandwidth for vpn clients over the holidays and whipped up a quick Munin plugin to do this. It works well but one problem is that when a client disconnects, the plugin stops submitting graph data for it, so the png's don't show the user anymore, kinda hard to see what's been done over the time period they "were" connected. How can I tell Munin to retain the data it has seen? I would rather this approach then hardcode the users in, as I have to manually maintain that list then... Thanks! jlc

Hi folks I have a Centos 5.3. I'm wondering how can I make this linux box to act as a time server for my small network. I just need this Centos PC act as a time reference for the other PCs so they can keep the time exact the same as the Centos server. Don;t need to syncronize the server with tyhe internet, just keep my local network with the same time in all the PC. Thanks in advance David

I recently came across the need to convert jpg images with IM, did a standard install of "yum -y install ImageMagick" and found that images converted with CentOS's base port of IM would actually corrupt the images, yet using the same (albiet different version, different distro) software didn't corrupt the images at all. By corrupted, I mean, the bottom portion of the image under *some* webservers looked completely wrong, and had strange checkering of the image in stripes across the bottom. OT: Google Earth - How to uninstall, before installing newest version?

Desktop is CentOS 5.4 (32 bit). I have Google Earth version 4.2.205.5730 (13NOV2007 build date) installed. I have checkinstall (spelling?) installed, but am not sure if that was installed before or after Google Earth was installed. I have the Google Repository installed, but apparently Google Earth cannot be updated via yum and probably it was not installed via yum. Question: What is the best way for me to uninstall this version of Google Earth, completely, before I install the newest version? (This also applies to removing Skype, which I am certain was not installed via yum, before I install the static version of Skype, that was recently recommended on the list). TIA and Happy Holidays! Subversion server: v1.4 (centos) vs. v1.6 (rpmforge)

Hi, I'm planning to upgrade an old public/internal development infrastructure and will use CentOS 5.4 x86_64 as basis. One of the critical server is Subversion (as an Apache httpd module). We currently use Subversion v1.4 on the server and v1.6 on our clients. While I was very happy with the v1.4 server over the years, we now sometimes have weird issues which seem related to compatibility with the v1.6 clients (typically working copy depth related). I also want to take the chance of this major overhaul of our infrastructure (and related testing etc.) to upgrade the various components and I'll be happy to benefit from Subversion improvements on the server side as well (especially if it then the version in production for another few years). The Subversion version in CentOS 5.4 is v1.4, whereas RPMForge provides v1.6. I use the RPMForge version as my client on the desktop. - Has anyone of you experience running Subversion servers on CentOS? - Would you in general consider as less secure / safe / stable to use RPMForge packages for such critical tasks? Apache + auth_mod_kerb + Active Directory = SSO

Hey List, I have been setting up SSO on our Intranet Apache server. All seems well, I think I have just about cracked it but it seems a little rough around the edges; I enabled auth_mod_kerb, and created a test directory in my web root (/secure) and added a directory directive under the httpd.conf, I created a user in Active Ditectory, used ktpass.exe to map the user to the service principal and put the key tab on the Apache server and all seems well. I am testing this with FireFox and Internet Explorer (Both on Windows XP Pro SP3 Client). FireFox works only with the FQDN of the Intranet server (and not just http://hostname/secure, this gives an authentication error), and only with our domain name set in "network.negotiate-auth.delegation-uris" and in "network.negotate-auth.trusted-uris". Internet Explorer however only works with http://hostname/secure and not f.q.d.n/secure? (Integrate with Windows Authentication IS enabled). Obviously as this point the reason I am posting here is because I am trying to eliminate the reasons for this. LVM, usb drives, Active Directory

I have a client with a handful of USB drives connected to a CentOS box. I am charged with binding the USB drives together into a single LVM for a cheap storage data pool (10 x 1 TB usb drives = 10 TB cheap storage in a single mount point). The next fun piece is how to incorporate that storage space into an existing Active Directory structure to apply AD acls for limited access. I'd rather not use Samba, as that is its own infrastructure and maintains its own credentials database. What are my best options? Thanks. Scott

Canon Printer Woe

Hi, Has anyone had any success using a Canon LBP5300 with CentOS or any other RH type os for that matter, using the rpms and intructions downloaded from the Canon website? I have it working on XP and OS X both via USB and network but am having no success with either on CentOS 5.4 . Print jobs seem to be processed correctly by CUPS but the printer doesn't respond at all and the jobs show up as completed in the CUPS job list. I do not know how to test the ccpd daemon but it seems to be running. Any pointers greatly appreciated. Cheers, Colin.

bnx2 losing connectivity

Hoping someone else has seen this before. I have a few dozen Dell R610 systems with CentOS 5.2 that are using kernels from 5.3 and 5.4 (2.6.18-128.1.10.el5 & 2.6.18-164.6.1.el5), that at random lose layer 2 network connectivity either partially or totally. Running tcpdump on the interface reveals only ARP broadcasts, no responses. Switch reports no packets being received on the interface. Systems can run for days/weeks or even months without an issue then drop off the network. At first I thought it was the Dell switches which we had lots of problems with but it has happened on two other brands of switches as well(Cisco and Extreme), so I no longer believe it's the switch but rather the systems. The workaround is to restart the network on the system. I have even configured the bonding driver to do ARP requests and fail over to the backup link in the event that fails but wasn't successful there either as both links can go down, and/or the system can go into "degraded" state where it can reach some systems but not others. I have ESXi systems running on the same hardware and to-date have not seen any of them drop off the same way. System can be under high traffic load at the time or completely idle, it doesn't seem to make a difference. No log entries indicating what might be going on. I have a case open with Dell but am not expecting a whole lot from them, maybe I'll get lucky though. They asked me to upgrade the NIC firmware which I did on a batch of systems to no avail(the release notes for the firmware said nothing about any fixes that sounded like my issue). Driver versions: ESXi (vSphere): Broadcom NetXtreme II Gigabit Ethernet Driver bnx2 v1.6.9 (December 8, 2007) Most linux systems(5.3 kernel): Broadcom NetXtreme II Gigabit Ethernet Driver bnx2 v1.7.9-1 (July 18, 2008) Some linux systems(5.4 kernel): Broadcom NetXtreme II Gigabit Ethernet Driver bnx2 v1.9.3 (March 17, 2009) Happens across at least a dozen systems spread over 4 data centers. Never seen this sort of behavior before in the hundreds and hundreds of systems I've run. These systems are all new, the R610 hardware was released around May 2009, and we've been having issues since day 1, but only recently have been able to rule the switches out as the cause. Is ext4 safe for a production server?

I am about to install a new server running CentOS 5.4. The server will contain pretty critical data that we can't afford to corrupt. I would like to benefit from the extra speed and features of a ext4 filesystem but I don't have any experience with it. Is there some member of the list who can enlighten me on whether ext4 is mature enough to be used on a production server without too much risk? Thank you!

I believe I used to pull sox for el5 from dag's site, but it doesn't appear to be there anymore. Nor on rpmforge, atrpms, epel. Does any (trusted/reliable) repo out there have sox built for el5? I started a rebuild of fedora-12 version, but it's a pretty major dependency hell. johnny
