Canon Printer Woe

Hi, Has anyone had any success using a Canon LBP5300 with CentOS or any other RH type os for that matter, using the rpms and intructions downloaded from the Canon website? I have it working on XP and OS X both via USB and network but am having no success with either on CentOS 5.4 . Print jobs seem to be processed correctly by CUPS but the printer doesn't respond at all and the jobs show up as completed in the CUPS job list. I do not know how to test the ccpd daemon but it seems to be running. Any pointers greatly appreciated. Cheers, Colin.

bnx2 losing connectivity

Hoping someone else has seen this before. I have a few dozen Dell R610 systems with CentOS 5.2 that are using kernels from 5.3 and 5.4 (2.6.18-128.1.10.el5 & 2.6.18-164.6.1.el5), that at random lose layer 2 network connectivity either partially or totally. Running tcpdump on the interface reveals only ARP broadcasts, no responses. Switch reports no packets being received on the interface. Systems can run for days/weeks or even months without an issue then drop off the network. At first I thought it was the Dell switches which we had lots of problems with but it has happened on two other brands of switches as well(Cisco and Extreme), so I no longer believe it's the switch but rather the systems. The workaround is to restart the network on the system. I have even configured the bonding driver to do ARP requests and fail over to the backup link in the event that fails but wasn't successful there either as both links can go down, and/or the system can go into "degraded" state where it can reach some systems but not others. I have ESXi systems running on the same hardware and to-date have not seen any of them drop off the same way. System can be under high traffic load at the time or completely idle, it doesn't seem to make a difference. No log entries indicating what might be going on. I have a case open with Dell but am not expecting a whole lot from them, maybe I'll get lucky though. They asked me to upgrade the NIC firmware which I did on a batch of systems to no avail(the release notes for the firmware said nothing about any fixes that sounded like my issue). Driver versions: ESXi (vSphere): Broadcom NetXtreme II Gigabit Ethernet Driver bnx2 v1.6.9 (December 8, 2007) Most linux systems(5.3 kernel): Broadcom NetXtreme II Gigabit Ethernet Driver bnx2 v1.7.9-1 (July 18, 2008) Some linux systems(5.4 kernel): Broadcom NetXtreme II Gigabit Ethernet Driver bnx2 v1.9.3 (March 17, 2009) Happens across at least a dozen systems spread over 4 data centers. Never seen this sort of behavior before in the hundreds and hundreds of systems I've run. These systems are all new, the R610 hardware was released around May 2009, and we've been having issues since day 1, but only recently have been able to rule the switches out as the cause. What should I do to make an existing CentOS (5.4) disc boot up on a new computer? I just made on CentOS 5.3 installation on that machine, so I know the hardware is compatible. Is ext4 safe for a production server?

I am about to install a new server running CentOS 5.4. The server will contain pretty critical data that we can't afford to corrupt. I would like to benefit from the extra speed and features of a ext4 filesystem but I don't have any experience with it. Is there some member of the list who can enlighten me on whether ext4 is mature enough to be used on a production server without too much risk? Thank you!

sox rpm for el5?

I believe I used to pull sox for el5 from dag's site, but it doesn't appear to be there anymore. Nor on rpmforge, atrpms, epel. Does any (trusted/reliable) repo out there have sox built for el5? I started a rebuild of fedora-12 version, but it's a pretty major dependency hell. johnny

Apparently I clicked wrong this morning and now instead of the menu (panel) with "Applications, Places, System", etc. being on the right side of my screen, it is in the middle of the screen, vertically, from the top. When I click in a vacant place in that menu, the "Properties" option is no longer there, but I was able to get into "Properties" (not sure how I was able to do that) and it still shows that the menu should be on the Right side of my screen. I restarted the box, but still have this minor, but annoying problem. This is a CentOS 5.4 (32 bit) Desktop. How can I get this GNOME Panel Menu back on the right side of the screen? TIA! Hello all, I'm testing a home LAN server inside Virtualbox - figured it'd be easier to build (and fix) things inside a virtual sandbox first, and then migrate over to a physical install once I have most of the kinks worked out. The host OS is Windows Vista; the guest OS will be various Linux distributions for education/entertainment purposes. First, a little explanation on the 'lay of the land': The first virtual machine is a gateway/router box running CentOS 5.4. The 'outward' facing NIC is eth0, and it picks up an IP through the NAT interface provided by Virtualbox. That part seems to be working fine at the moment. The VM has CentOS 5.4 installed, downloaded and installed updates, and can browse the web, etc. The 'internal' network adapter (eth1) is connected to a virtual LAN 'intnet' that is otherwise not accessible from the 'outside' world at this point. It has a static IP assigned (10.0.0.1/255.255.255.0), and dnsmasq is running. Here is the contents of /etc/dnsmasq.conf: domain-needed bogus-priv filterwin2k except-interface=eth0 dhcp-range=10.0.0.50,10.0.0.100,1h dhcp-host=asmodean dhcp-host=demandred dhcp-host=lanfear dhcp-authoritative conf-dir=/etc/dnsmasq.d and here is the contents of /etc/hosts: 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost ::1 localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6 10.0.0.1 rahvin.local rahvin 10.0.0.2 asmodean.local asmodean 10.0.0.3 demandred.local demandred 10.0.0.4 lanfear.local lanfear What I *want* to happen is to be able to give a fixed dhcp lease to a client that sends a particular name from /etc/hosts - that way I just have to maintain /etc/hosts on the gateway/router box for local DNS, and I don't have to fiddle around finding and recording and entering the MAC addresses for each network card on each machine (actually easier on a 'virtual' lan than in real life, but still a minor PITA). I got the idea from this clause in the original dnsmasq.conf file: # Enable the address given for "judge" in /etc/hosts # to be given to a machine presenting the name "judge" when # it asks for a DHCP lease. #dhcp-host=judge The specific problem I'm having is that of the virtual 'clients', only one of them is getting assigned an IP address from the list in /etc/hosts. 'asmodean', running Ubuntu 9.10 gets its IP address of 10.0.0.2 as planned. The other two, demandred (running F12+LXDE) and lanfear (running Debian 5.03 Lenny), get randomly assinged IP addresses from the pool defined in dnsmasq.conf (10.0.0.50-10.0.0.100) like one would normally expect for a *dynamically* assigned lease. Except I wanted them to get fixed leases based on /etc/hosts. I've looked at most everything I can think of on both hosts... it doesn't seem to much matter if I set the hostname to 'demandred.local' or just 'demandred'. I'm not sure how to tell if the clients are sending that information in their requests? Any other ideas or suggestions? I realize the problem may not be strictly with the CentOS box, but any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA, Monte

Samba, ADS & Winbind Separator on CentOS 5.4

Hi! I have a little problem with Samba. I have an ADS integrated CentOS 5.4 server. I had frequent access problem when M$ users create directories and files. So i thought to force users' persmissions by way of the "force user" parameter in smb.conf. First problem is that the forced users i want to apply are ADS users and named like "MYDOMAIN#Joe" in passwd file. When i use this name in smb.conf, i get this error when i run testparm: "ERROR: the 'winbind separator' parameter must be a single character.", even if i used "winbind separator =#". If i use "winbind separator =\" and name my users like "MYDOMAIN\Joe" in smb.conf, i have no error but users cannot access the share. Actually, i know that "#" is sometimes used for comments on the config file and "\" is sometimes used to escape characters. Now, what should i do to fix the problem? Change Winbind config to use another character? Use some kind of escaped character in smb.conf? I'm a little lost! Thanks! Guy Boisvert, ing. IngTegration inc.

Device enumeration during kickstart

By default, a kickstart installation will spread the configured partitions over all disks that are found, and the only way around that is to use --ondisk or ignoredisk. But I was wondering how reliable this method is. E.g. if there are four SATA ports on the system board, can I blindly assume that port one will always correspond to sda, port two to sdb, and so on? Can I assume that a second disk added to a one-disk system will always show up as sdb, and sda will remain sda?

Hello, i have a certain issue at hand that i'm trying to solve. there's a certain command that i need to execute 10 minutes after boot. how can i set that? im not very expert with cron jobs but can it be done that way? i know that cronjob works on specified time but how can i set it to run with '10 min after startup" as a condition ?

486 custom kernel

Hi all, Is it possible to take the 686 CentOS 5, install that in virtual machine, install a custom kernel that is the 486 flavor, take that image and put it on a 8G CF card - insert that into a small form factor 486 class machine and have that work? I am hoping the extra instructions in a 686 (MMX, SEE etc) are not used by any libraries that I would be using (just standard stuff) and the new 486 compiled kernel would not be using those instructions either. Can this possible work? I am hoping to not use debian i386 basically. Thanks, Jerry

Firewall for virtual machines

I realize I'm not getting a lot of questions answered here lately, and I'm going to presume that this is for legitimate reasons (i.e., people don't know or are too busy to think about it), not because they seem stupid (if they do, please tell me, on the list or privately). I run Windows as a VMWare guest on top of my CentOS host, and I generally have not used a firewall on the guest. This is partly because I only run it rarely, and it seems like a waste when it's running on a host that has its own, pretty effective firewall, but today I began to wonder - would it be a bad idea (or a complete waste) to use a firewall, like ZoneAlarm, on my Windows guest OS? Opinions welcome. Thanks. mhr

Deleting contents of /tmp on shutdown

I use to have a line of code in /etc/init.d/syslog (I think this was the file) to delete the contents of my /tmp directory on shutdown. It originally came from fedora. I have searched for it but can't find it again. Anyone happen to have it? TIA

Empty /var/log/messages

Hi all, I don't know if anybody already ask this question. Sorry if I repost it again. I googling already, but don't find any clue. I'm using centos 5.3, but why the /var/log/messages is empty. Even the sylogd daemon is run. Me already compare /etc/syslog.conf with another centos machine. The /etc/syslog.conf is same. Anybody know what happen? XFS and LVM2 (possibly in the scenario of snapshots)

Hi list, during the last days there was a discussion going on about the stability of XFS; though I myself used XFS heavily and didn't run into issues yet, I'd like to ask something *before* we create our next generation data storage backend... Les Mikesell wrote in [0] about issues in the combination of XFS and LVM -- however, it was being discussed in context of using 32bit kernels. What I specifically need is to run XFS (or something similar, I am *not* forced to use XFS, but it was my preference for some years now, and I didn't have any issues with it yet) on top of LVM to be able to create snapshots. We're talking about several file systems of a size at about 4TiByte each. On another place [1] I read that there were issues with that. Can anyone shed some light on this? Would be very appreciated. CentOS 5.4 - Problem with Enumeration of NICs

I just made a new CentOS 5.4 installation. The machine has an Intel 10/100 and an Intel GB on board, and a Broadcom GB card on a PCI-X (64 bit) slot. After the install finished, I noticed that the order and naming of the Ethernet interfaces is totally screwed up. Under Network Manager, the Intel GB card shows the MAC address of the Broadcom and vice-versa. As a consequence, none of them works. When I push the Probe button, they show each other's MAC Adress. The names of the devices do not correspond to the names of the interfaces. If I correct the problem by manually editing the configuration files, they MAY get wrong again upon reboot. Only the 10/100 interface stays put. After a remote reboot for kernel update, I just lost connection with the machine, so I guess it happened again. This NEVER happened with CentOS 5.2 or 5.3 on the same machine. I want to manually assign a ID to the cards and let them keep it forever. Will the manual entry of the HWADDR=/ /parameter in the ifcfg-eth<x> files fix this for good or will it be overrided by some other component of the OS? Thank you.

moving from live partitions to raid1 on an eserver

I have a qtp (qmail toaster plus) machine on an ibm 326 eserver that has 2 sata 250GB drives. The problem I have is that when the Os was installed I thought I had hardware raid on but to my avail the Os assumed to drives an installed accordingly. Here is what df has for the partitions. # df Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/sdb1 240362656 17843040 210309816 8% / /dev/sda1 101086 11843 84024 13% /boot none 2047316 0 2047316 0% /dev/shm I need a raid in place on this machine. This is a live machine but I do have a lab machine to break. I really need to move this in a live fashion without losing the data of course I have complete backups to start a new if need be but it would be nice to be able to make the change and have raid1 in place to have a some better redundancy. I guess what I am asking what are the basic steps and what warnings to look for? Thanks --Dave

Hi, i am getting an issue with rtorrent that is related to my curl libaries. In summary it requires a later curl libary than CentOS 5.4 uses for its system files (CentOS uses curl libs version 7.15.5, rtorrent requires 7.19.2 or greater). To get around this I would like to download the latest curl version and compile and link to rtorrent without affecting system files. How can i statically link the latest Curl libs to my rtorrent build? ntop from rpmforge

I don't know why I haven't signed up for this list before since we use CentOS all over the place. The list is very useful and it is good for me to participate and "give back" to the community. Anywho, I wanted to post this response to a thread that was created back in November 2008 about the ntop daemon failing to start. I'm currently setting up ntop as a NetFlow & SFlow collector and came across the issue. A quick refresher, the init script for ntop has an issue where it can't parse the ntop.conf file correctly if switches are entered before the "@/etc/ntop.conf". The suggested work around was to move the "-d -L" switches from in front of the "@/etc/ntop.conf" and put them behind it. This is definitely the fix. There is a caveat to that and I haven't found anyone that has mentioned it so I thought I would. According to the documentation, if you add the switches after the "@/etc/ntop.conf" those will override the configurations in the ntop.conf file. While this isn't an issue with the "-d" option, if you decide to use a custom syslog level and add it to the conf file, the "-L" switch after the conf file will override your custom log facility. autofs and blank dvd

Well, I was about to burn a blank dvd. I put it in, and was setting it up in kb3... and my boss calls me, to tell me that my system's putting out error messages like crazy. I looked, and I assume it was autofs trying to mount the blank disk. How do I keep it from doing that in the future? mark

Auditd fails to start : Connection refused

Greetings: i have an x86_64 Centos5.3 box and i'm trying to run auditd. it fails on startup and this is the O/P at the end: config_manager init complete Error setting audit daemon pid (Connection refused) type=DAEMON_ABORT msg=audit(1260554376.697:5674): auditd error halt, auid=4294967295 pid=32702 res=failed Unable to set audit pid, exiting The audit daemon is exiting. Error setting audit daemon pid (Connection refused) the only thing i've learned from asking google is that it's a potential problem with the interaction between selinux & auditd, but i haven't found a solution. two questions: 1. anyone know what the problem is? (that or my next step in diagnosing it) 2. if i can't solve it, is there an alternative method for adding watchpoints to directories such that i can be notified of WRITE events for files in that directory (and preferably for all of it's subdirectories)? My kernel version is 2.6.18 (full info below). poweredge 1950 hangs at starting udev

Hi all, I have a PowerEdge 1950 that was acting weird. Network connectivity was only performing at a quarter of what was expected (if that). Even if I scp'd something to localhost it would perform poorly. Rather than fight with it, I just decided to reload it. It was running 5.3, and it is now running 5.4. However, when I go to boot it gets stuck at starting udev. If I let it sit long enough it will then give me errors with something along the lines of: Dazed and confused, but trying to continue Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason 00 Do you have a strange power saving mode enabled? Wondering if anyone has an idea.. Thanks, Ryan

Problem mounting CIFS shares with credential file after SAMBA update

Hello all, This morning i updated my CentOS (5.4) and that included: samba-3.0.33-3.14.el5.i386.rpm samba-client-3.0.33-3.14.el5.i386.rpm samba-common-3.0.33-3.14.el5.i386.rpm samba-swat-3.0.33-3.14.el5.i386.rpm I have several mounts if fstab using a .credentials file that worked until i rebooted with this updates. I remember time ago was an issue with the format of credentials file (something about a LF at the end or something else) I've checked the file, added spaces between "=", added a line at the end, between username and passwd... but it doesn't work, i always get an error like (when i do mount -a): mount error 13 = Permission denied Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs) (this is repeated for every CIFS share mounted in fstab) If i mount it "by hand" it works fine: # mount -tcifs -ousername=xxxx //192.168.0.100/xxxxx /media/xxxxx Password: And then, if i do a mount -a then works! (until i reboot, of course) # mount -a # Do anyone knows what is happening? I just created a 4 drive mdadm --level=raid10 on a centos 4.8-ish system here, and shortly thereafter remembreed I hadn't updated it in a while, so i ran yum update... while installing/updating stuff, got these errors: Installing: kernel ####################### [14/69] raid level raid10 (in /proc/mdstat) not recognized ... Installing: kernel-smp ####################### [19/69] raid level raid10 (in /proc/mdstat) not recognized is this a problem? the raid10 'seems' to work....

An error message I don't recognize

I have recently been told I will have to maintain some CentOS servers at work. Since I have only been using Slackware for the last 16 years, I decided to install CentOS on one of my servers at home to get an idea of the differences. I installed CentOS 5.4 from CD with no problems, did a yum update, set up a couple of samba shares and started to copy over some files from one of my other servers. Everything looks ok, but I keep seeing this message on the active console. I have no idea where it comes from nor what it means. type=1400 audit(1260446462.444:9): avc: denied { getattr } for pid=2200 comm="smbd" path="/proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc" dev=binfmt_misc ino=4348 scontext=root:system_r:smbd_t:s0 tcontext=system_u:object_r:binfmt_misc_fs_t:s0 tclass=dir What is it, what is triggering it and how do I fix it? I don't see how to do it. I had to telnet into a firewall and run a trace, and I had to stop it, copy and paste to gedit, then start again, etc. I find it interesting, and sad, that there is no easy 'output to file' profile setting.

Unable to share directory via Samba?

So I went to System > Administration > Server Settings > Samba and added a folder to share and initially set it to guest access to get things going. I couldn't access this one and only share on this server with guest access from either my Windows laptop (XP Pro SP3) or a Leopard server (10.5.8) so I changed the settings to use user authentication and added my local user details (this is a stand alone file server with one user and the root user running CentOS 5.4). I made sure I hadn't put the entries in iptables incorrect by stopping iptables (sudo /etc/init.d/iptables stop, which executed just fine). SELinux kept popping up so I disabled that and restarted the server also. So now with no iptables nor SELinux enabled flicking between guest and user access I still can't access the share (I have also tried authenticating as root to no avail), my Windows and Mac test machines are erroring out saying they don't have permissions to access the share (I am an administrator on both machines so its not a local permissions issue). There are no firewall restrictions between my test machines and the CentOS server as I would even get prompted for authentication so that's not a problem and my test machines work fine because I can mount smb shares on other files servers in the same subnet as the CentOS server, what's going on? yes, that's right, but i am asking here about Quagga, which is a routing software (OSPF, BGP etc.), not about kernel multipath, i mean if Quagga is compiled with Equal Cost MultiPath (ECMP), the "-enable-multipath" compile option. Can someone post here the spec file from which quagga rpm was built for CentOS? Thanks. Is lsb 3.2+ detrimental to CentOS 5.4?

I found out today that Google Chrome is now available for Linux. I can get xdg-utils easily enough, but it doesn't seem relevant if I can't use the newer lsb. So, is it possible to use lsb 3.2+ on CentOS 5.4 without breaking anything? Is there anything else I'd need to do, other than convert to Fedora (not going to happen)? Thanks. mhr
