EDAC Kernel Panic 2.6.9-78 and above

I've got a production system running CentOS 4 that was rock solid until I upgraded from 2.6.9-55 to 2.6.9-78.0.13 (now running 2.6.9-89.0.11). The system now crashes intermittently after a few weeks. I finally caught the panic message : EDAC MC0: INTERNAL ERROR: channel-b out of range (4 >= 4) Kernel panic - not syncing: MC0: Uncorrected Error Looking at the kernel changelog, I see that EDAC support was added for the Intel 5000 chipset in 2.6.9-68.20.EL which this server runs. I'm trying to determine if this is a potential memory issue, or is this related to some other hardware item. Also considering disabling EDAC in the kernel (is "noedac" a valid option?) as a last resort. I will run memtest86+ on the server as soon as possible to check the memory, just formulating my game plan if it's something else. Thoughts? Chris

Low End NAS hardware.

Hey, The recent discussion on NAS/SAN and the Thecus N8800 got me to thinking. Bit of background. I have an old Dual Athlon MP2800+ that I'm using for a home web/file server. It runs fine but between the noise of the various fans and it's location in the living room, I've been asked by my spouse to find a replacement for it that's smaller & quieter. Looking at the Thecus, and based on experience with Atom based Mini-ITX systems at work, I was thinking about rolling my own. My questions is, for a small home server that runs apache/php/mysql and Samba, how well do the Mini-ITX boards like the VIA C3/7 & Intel Atoms handle this sort of task? I've used VIA systems as MythTV frontends but never as file/web servers. I'd expect they'd do fine for home use but I've never tried. Thanks, -- Drew "Nothing in life is to be feared. Has anyone succesfully setup, and used CentOS as an iSCSI server? I'm trying to setup a server with 4x500GB HDD's, setup in RAID 10 to act as an iSCSI server for a virtualization project, but I can't find a decent howto on how to setup an iSCSI server using CentOS. File Server using ISCSI attached storage - Hardware HBA ?

Hi Everyone I am looking at setting up a File Server that uses ISCSI storage. It is the first time I have done this, so I am wanting to get peoples thoughts on whether for CentOS systems you should use Hardware based ISCSI HBA's? If so do I need to be careful about what HBA I use ? Currently I am looking at purchasing a Dell System using Broadcom ethernet cards/ ISCSI HBA. From google searching it seems QLogic HBA's are quite popular ? Any suggestions or experience you can offer appreciated. Have a nice day

Recommendation for PCI-e SATA RAID 5 card?

Hello: I am looking for a recommendation for a PCI-e RAID card for my server. The server has a PCI-e x16 low profile slot so the card has to be at most 6.6 inches long x 2.536 inches high. I would like to use RAID 5 with 3 drives so I have to have those capabilities. It has to be CentOS 5.4 compatible (Of course!). I took a look at the offerings from 3Ware, but their cards are too long. If you have a card you are happy with, I would appreciate a recommendation. CentOS-5.3 saslauth configuration issue

I am trying to get cyrus-imapd and saslauthd running together so that I can get squirrelmail to work. I have accomplished this on several other servers and have relatively complete documentation on how to do this. What I am running into in this case has me baffled. If I start saslauthd as a service: # service saslauthd start And I try testsaslauthd -u cyrus -p test Then I see this: 0: NO "authentication failed" and in the syslog I see this:: saslauthd[5995]: do_auth : auth failure: [user=cyrus] [service=imap] [realm=] [mech=pam] [reason=PAM auth error] However, if I stop the system service: # service saslauthd stop and I run the saslauthd daemon from the tty with debug on: # saslauthd -a shadow -d -n 6 then when I try # testsaslauthd -u cyrus -p test I see 0: OK "Success." 'Extremely lazy' disk flush?

Are there any good options to configure a filesystem so most activity takes place in the RAM buffer with the flush to physical media allowed to lag very far behind? OpenNMS does some data collection that keeps the disk very busy. I don't want to lose the history completely in a crash like you would with a ramdisk, but it wouldn't be a big problem if only the last 10-30 minutes would be dropped. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

Trying to install CentOS 5.4 with Xfce and I have enabled the extras repo, but Xfce doesn't show up when I customize the software selections. Is this because 5.4 hasn't hit all of the mirrors yet, or is Xfce not around for 5.4? Ryan

Console priority

Hi all, A while back I vaguely remember someone posting a link to documentation on how to prioritise console access (for want of a better expression). For the life of me I can't find it in the archives or via Google; Can anyone provide a URL? Basically, I have a remote server that thrashes (that's my theory at least) occasionally, resulting in the service (httpd/mysql) failing. When its in this state logging on to the console (serial + screen) responds with "login timeout". The only way back from this at the moment is a reboot.. If I can prioritize console access somehow and get on to the server I may find a clue as to what's causing it. Cheers Dan

Rescan for new geometry without reboot?

Hello, We just had our servers fitted with more disks. Most of the disks are growing existing RAID 1+0 channels, some are in new channels. Controllers and disks support live installation. I'd like to avoid a reboot just to let the system find that the disks are larger. All I can find so far suggests that its possible to rescan the disks, and even find the new geometry (e.g. http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/Kernel/2004-12/1555.html) but nobody knows how to actually convince the system to let me use the extra space without a reboot. Does anyone know of a way to achieve this? Thanks, --Amos

local centos repository upgrade from 5.3 to 5.4

Hi list, I run quite a few centos 5.3 servers and have a local yum repository which is working fine. Below a list of what I'm rsyncing at the moment + an extract from my / etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo file I copied the OS directory from the install media and ran createrepo on that dir. I would like to upgrade my servers to 5.4. I was wondering if I could simply replace the '5.3' part in the rsync source to '5.4' ? Or is there more to it? full-fledge PDF editor for Linux

Hi all, Does anybody know of an editor that can do on Linux what Acrobat / Acrobat Pro can do on Mac/Windows? I have tried to use the PDF Import extension to the Open Office which appears barely functional - at least it is so slow as to be almost impractical. I have also tried pdfedit under Linux which seems to work fine but seems to have rather limited functionality. For instance, the capability to make bookmarks or to search through the whole document (as opposed to the current page) seems to be missing there. Any tips much appreciated. Cheers, Boris.

RH Server/Client disk sets -> Centos; how?

I'm running Centos on 12 machines. Colleague runs Redhat Enterprise Linux and while studying his system, I see some gibberish/complication about his system being a "Client" install, not a "Server" install. Apparently, RH provides completely different disk sets for Server and Client installs. I've gone to the RH website and read about the difference between Client and Server, but I still don't understand why they make 2 different disks. In the "old days" of RH, there would be 1 set of disks, and when the install began, you would choose "server" or "workstation" as a way of choosing a default set of packages, and then you could freely pick and choose additional things. You could install gnome on a server, or an http server on a client. Centos seems to follow the good old RH packaging approach. This RHEL Client/Server thing actually causes some wrinkles if you try to transition a running system from RH to Centos, because the repository names are different. RH will have a version name like "5client" whereas Centos will just have 5. I understand this Centos list is not quite the right place to ask "why does RedHat do that?", but I bet some of you will know. What I really want to ask here is: what is the relationship between the several RHEL install types and the Centos disks? Created a DVD from Gnome Desktop -CentOS-5.3

I am trying to put the dvd iso image of CentOS-5.4 onto a DVD. I have an LG multi-writer installed. I have used this device on this host to created CDs in the past but this is my first attempt at creating a dvd. When I put a blank DVD-R media in the drive then I see a desktop icon for "CD-ROM Disc" created. When I open the bittorent folder and click on the iso image "CentOS-5.4-x86_64-bin-DVD.iso" then I am prompted to open the image with "CD/DVD Creator". When I do this then I get a new window opened with the image file in the lower portion and an entry at the top labelled: CD/DVS Creator Folder and a button labled "Write to Disc" When I click on write to disc I am prompted to either create from image or create from file. I select image and am propted for the speed. I select maximum possible (the default) and press the write button. I get this error: Insert a rewritable or blank disc Please put a disc, with at least 4.3 GiB free, into the drive. The following disc types are supported: DVD+R DL, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW I get the same thing if I use a DVD-RAM. What is going on? Looked through several specs of different boxes, and decided for an ICY-box, that can hold two sata-disks, raid0/raid1/jbod, has an GB-ethernet interface and capable of doing NFS. (which is actually an Linux-box) However, the box is as slow as a proverbial civil-servant, although the link is realy set to GB, it just might as well have been 100MB. And even that its not capable of filling to the max. The destination address is the private IP of the server. These seem to be related to outgoing email connections based on the source IPs, but I don't know why they are not part of an established connection. Openfiler question - fiber channel?

Hey folks, I don't seem to be able to get a response from the openfiler forums (and they want 40 quid for the fine manual!), and since there has been a lot of chat about it here lately, I figured I'd ask here. Please forgive my terminology as I am just making my first baby steps into iSCSI and Fiber Channel, and am not very well read on the matters. So I could be using the wrong terms (anyone got a good primer to recommend?) It seems straightforward that I can install openfiler to server iSCSI disks out over the network. And it seems obvious to me that I'd want a dedicated network for doing that. That part is easy. But based on some poking around on the openfiler site and in the forums, it looks to me like it might be possible to stick a fiber channel card into an openfiler system, and serve fiberchannel out to other systems? Is that right? Is anyone here doing this? centos5.4 and freenx - using my home dir and settings

Hello all, I am setting up freenx on a machine and I am able to connect to it remotely. However, when I connect and start xfce it does not appear to use the correct settings. It acts like it is a whole different user. It is starting the desktop environment as the nx user rather than myself. Is there any way to have the NX server connect as myself rather than having a whole separate virtual environment? I know you can't connect to an existing X session that wasn't started with FreeNX, but I want to be able to start a session using my settings and have access to my home dir, etc. Thanks, Ryan

VMware Server 2.0.1 and Centos 5.4

Upgrade to RHEL 5.4's glibc has rendered vmware-hostd inoperable in some systems. I don't know if Centos 5.4 has the same conflict between glibc and VMware Server as RHEL (no reason it shouldn't). If you run VMware Server 2.0.1 make a copy of /lib64/libc-2.5.so (or /lib/libc- 2.5.so) before upgrading to 5.4. Monitoring a remote server with Conky ?

Hi, I've been using Conky for some time, a nifty utility to monitor just about anything on the PC. Vital things like CPU, RAM, swap, disks, current song playing in MPD :o) Here's what it looks like : http://www.microlinux.fr/images/bureau_conky.png And with more detail : http://www.microlinux.fr/images/conky_zoom.png Now I wonder... I'd really like to use that to monitor my remote server. I know this feature isn't officially supported by Conky, but I'm right now thinking about a workaround. Something like: OK, my server is 'headless' (e. g.: no graphical server, nothing), but why not install just xorg-x11-server-Xorg, then use Conky and forward it to my local display with SSH -X ? I'm pondering this question, thinking about the possible issues... ... so maybe one of you guys here has come up with some solution ? Cheers, Niki

Hello all: I am trying to follow the RHEL virtualization guide. According to Chapter 17, I have a processor without a constant Time Stamp Counter (Its an Opteron). According to that guide, I need to set the MIN_SPEED and MAX_SPEED variables in /etc/sysconfig/cpuspeed to the highest frequency show in /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_available_frequencies I took a look at my system (CentOS 5.4) and there are no cpufreq directories in the cpu folders. Is that a problem? Hi, is there any way to sum and limit quotas for one user across multiple filesystems? E.g. I'd like to use different mountpoints on a mailserver for /var/mail and /home but the user should have only a total of 1GB. or on a samba server the windows profile files should be on an other filesystem as other files for that user. RAID advice? and KVM advice?

Hello All, In the not too distant future I will be commissioning a new CentOS (5.4?) box with 4 identical SATA drives. I'd like to set them up as RAID 1+0 for speed and redundancy. I've read the RHEL 5 deployment guide on raid setup and it seems to cover the basics of software raid pretty well, but doesn't cover 1+0. Does anyone have a reference for that kind of configuration? I'd also like to have two virtual domains, one for CentOS and one for Debian. any suggestions for setup docs for that kind of arrangement? TIA. Thanks to those who responded. The use of Apache's reverse proxy was something I would never have though of (it's the mind-numbing cold medication I'm on, LOL) However, I did manage to get things rolling thru the tunnel by configuring strong-end routing at the remote server. Requests were indeed arriving at the remote, but because the request's origin IP address was that of the outside user's browser, the remote server was simply trying to return responses via its default route, which is not the tunnel. I *have* to ask ... why is strong-end routing not the default behavior in Linux? Anyway ... Adding 'ip route ....' and 'ip rule ....' commands when establishing the tunnel did the trick. I suppose the question ultimately becomes, is this something the CentOS project is interested in generally providing or are we looking at specific support for BKO? gpg command works fine from login shell, not from cron script

I have an odd situation here, maybe one of you can help. We have a script that runs via a cron job. It's purpose is to decrypt PGP-encrypted files in a certain directory. I have tried the command two different ways, both fail with the same error message: gpg --decrypt $file > ${file%.txt}.decrypted.txt gpg --output ${file%.txt}.decrypted.txt --decrypt $file (Don't even ask about the name substitution. The end-user insists they MUST submit files with a .txt extension, and not .pgp or .gpg) Anyway, I can run the script fine from a login shell. It works beautifully. But when it runs from a cron job two things happen: 1. A file of zero size is created called file.decrypted.txt 2. The error message in the cron email I get says: gpg: encrypted with ELG-E key, ID XXXXXXXX gpg: decryption failed: secret key not available Why does it say "secret key not available"? The output of gpg -K shows that the key is in fact available, and this is further confirmed when I run the script manually and the files are decrypted just fine.

I've been setting custom env vars for Apache 1 of 2 ways; 1 - Changing the passwd file so Apache has a shell and loading a custom .bashrc file. 2 - Using the SetEnv directive in my httpd.conf file. I'm crazy about neither one as they both have limitations; 1 - I don't like giving Apache its own shell. 2 - The SetEnv directive only takes 2 args so if I have a var with multiple values like a path, it won't work. What's the cleanest way to set complex env vars for Apache?

Still Confused about Firewalling

Hi All, Sorry, I am still confused about implementing a firewall without having my ISP static route all of my traffic to my public IP's to a single public IP. So before when I have done this for work all traffic has been statically routed. Now I have a comcast modem and it is 'pass through' so traffic for all my 13 IP's is allowed and I have to decide what to do. So I am looking at Vyatta or UnTangle. I have a machine with 3 NIC'e in it. I think one would be In, DMZ and last private. What happens? I have one cable from my comcast gateway to my firewalls NIC, but how does it answer for all IP's that I have so i can evaluate the request incoming to a rule set and decide if allowed or denied? I am missing something fundamental! Can anyone help this click in my head? Without statically routing my traffic I dont get it. Say a request comes to my webserver 172.13.167.xxx on port 80, but my firewall's IP for the card is 172.13.167.zzz how does it answer for 172.13.167.xxx? -Jason

Postfix, Milters and SELinux

Hi folks, I want to run Postfix with external milter application on a CentOS 5.3 mailgateway. At the moment SELinux is preventing postfix' cleanup daemon from accessing sockets. Before I to through the process of audit2allow trial and error - has anybody out there successfully gone though this and can send me a policy I can work with? Any hint or help is appreciated. Dirk

so far: - not a yum bug - not a configuration issue - other persons could reproduce this behaviour even under RHEL right? so this backport is actually broken or let's say the guy who did this, improved encryptFS-utils that much, it uses now X11 libraries even if it actually has no GUI... still right? ok, so now what is the next step? Exactly. RAID above RAID 0 does provide redundancy towards hard disk errors. It makes the system more robust. But the data is still in the same set of drives. Backup, as with scp, rsync and cron to a different computer is what you need. We backup our computers every hour with the above. It's very low impact and all we can loose are some changes in the last two hours if the system dies during rsync. David, RAID 0 is not mirroring. What it does is extend capacity over two or more drives. RAID 1 is mirroring. Backing up a centos serveR? how to ? Newbie question..

Hi all, excuse my newbie question but how can i backup my centos server? i have a dozzen of virtual hosts over it as well as substantial database entries.. i've backed up the following directories using rsync: workspace/ /etc/httpd/ /etc/apache-tomcat-6.0.20/ /usr/lib/mysql/ /var/lib/mysql though i'm still not at ease with this, so i decided to do a some sort of clone or something to move this server to a VMWARE which i will turn on when needed (if main server failed) any advice on how to do so ? i've looked around and tried using "clonezilla" though that didn't work with me, i guess i mustve done something wrong... each time i try to boot from the cloned image of the local disk (which in turn cloned to the VM's local disk) it gives an error bout root records... so any other way ? any sort of help is greatly appreciated :) thanks and best regards, Roland _________________________________________________________________ Keep your friends updated—even when you’re not signed in. http://www.microsoft.com/middleeast/windows/windowslive/see-it-in-action/so…

I imagine the following scenario: someone walks into my office building with a laptop (a colleague, a visitor, a guest, whoever), and hooks up onto the local net (wired or wireless). The server detects an unknown MAC address, issues a bogus dhcp lease which resolves all dns queries to a single internal web page with a form the user is supposed to fill in and send. After he does so, an administrator does a sanity check of the data the user provided, and grants or denies access. If access is granted, the user gets a new, unrestricted dhcp lease, which provides him with a normal access to local network. Go pay for RHEL." not to put too find a point on it, but that reply is more than a bit dickish. it doesn't *matter* if it's a volunteer project. as i see this, this is turning into an issue of credibility. once someone posts that the 5.4 release is allegedly "baked" and syncing is beginning, then it's not unreasonable that people will start getting anxious to see it hit the mirrors. and as the days go by, it's not unreasonable for those people to start wondering what the heck is going on. again, whether people are being paid to do any of this work is not relevant. it's important, from the perspective of reputation, that everyone see the centos project as being efficiently and competently run, and making what *appears* to be an announcement of completion and the beginning of syncing servers, followed by days of awkward silence and increasingly defensive rhetoric, is not the way to do it. it just looks bad. rday -- ======================================================================== Robert P. trying to understand OSS, GPL, BSD & other licensing model for software distribution.

Hi all, We are busy developing some software (some is web based, others not) and I am having a bit of hard time understanding (or rather, choosing) a license model to work with, We will offer some free software (PHP based scripts, and even Windows based applications) and for this I'm sure the GPL, or even LGPL (for the network side?) will work fine. But, we also need to suppose these scripts, and will be charging for support (other for installations, customization, or even custom derivations, etc), but at the same time we need to distribute some commercial software to cover developer's salaries, rents, marketing, business growth, etc. Now, my question(s) is as follows: Can I sell one script as GPL, but another as AGPL, or even BSD under the same company name? And if these 2 are tied together (i.e. being able to be used together, although seperate programs / script - for example Apache + PHP), how would I license them? We are writing a series of PHP + MySQL based scripts which can be used on the internet, either stand-alone, or in conjunction with other scripts (API driven), and I want to offer a free, limited edition, as well as commercial edition with more features. We're also writing some software that makes use of MySQL / sqlite / postgresql, and even MSSQL, so I need to take their licenses into consideration. What would be the best license for this? I know it's broad, but there's just too much to readup on the different licences and I've read a lot already, not knowing where to go. I have a feeling that I may need to go the dual / multi-license route, but even then I don't know which licences to use. The open source projects wouls also be open for other people to add their own modifications, but I would also like to allow others to write commercial addon's as well.
