centos 5 reboot diagnosis

Hi we use cent OS 5.2 on all our production server, just today one of or mail server had a reboot and we dont understand why ... usually we get a alert if a system was loaded up ... but this system just reboot .... may be it could be a power failure ...( is there any way to check this ) .. but that is the last optiopn i am guess as the server is in IDC . With dmidecode and biosdecode .. i just get server / bios info . In the Messages and Dmesgs ... i cant really pin pont the issue . Is there any thingi am not doing or any thing i am supposed to figure out the reson for this reboot. -- Regards Agnello D'souza

Unless it's a SCSI/SAS RAID controller often times those onboard RAID controllers are of decent quality. RAID 5 as implemented by most disk vendors does have issues at least with large SATA disks - Why RAID 5 stops working in 2009 - http://blogs.zdnet.com/storage/?p=162 A couple vendors that I know of - 3PAR(which I use) and Compellent don't suffer from this limitation because they virtualize the disks, I can't speak too much for Compellent's architecture but 3PAR doesn't RAID physical disks, they raid portions of each disk, when a disk fails, every disk in the system participates in rebuilding that failed set of arrays, which results in upwards of a 10x improvement in recovery time and 90%+ drop in system impact while the arrays are rebuilding. This virtualization also allows you to run multiple levels of RAID on the same spindles for different purposes. The likelihood of suffering a double disk failure on such a system during a RAID rebuild is probably quite a bit less than suffering a triple disk failure on a RAID-6 system which runs RAID on whole physical disks. At full system load my array can recover from a 750GB drive failure in less than 3 hours. Our previous array took nearly 30 hours to recover from a 300GB(SATA) drive failure. If on my array the disk is only half utilized, then it will take half the time to rebuild, as only written data is rebuilt, no point in replicating portions of the disk that haven't been used, though other vendors do this because they don't have the architecture to support sub-disk rebuilds. My own 200-disk array has more than 86,000 individual RAID arrays on it, most of them being RAID 5(5+1). Array management is automatic and transparent to the storage system I just tell it how big a volume I want and what type of data protection. For performance reasons I'm migrating my RAID 5(5+1) to 3+1 next year after I add more space. I miscalculated the growth of the big driver of space on the current system so I had to migrate to 5+1(RAID level migrations have no service impact either on my array). On my system there is roughly only a 9% performance drop from RAID 1+0 to RAID 5+0, so in many cases running RAID 5 on my array is about the same as RAID 1 on other arrays, it's that fast. RAID 6 has a pretty good performance hit vs RAID 5 due to the extra parity disk, on some arrays the performance hit is even greater as the array calculates parity twice, NetApp I think has as good a RAID 6 implementation as there is, though they can't get around writing the parity information to two different disks. nate

logrotate and regular expressions

I am trying to use logrotate to rotate our web logs for our various vhosted sites to cut down on space and rotate out old logs that are not necessary to keep around personally. What Im curious to find out, is how supported extended regular expressions is within the logrotate.conf file. More specifically, will logrotate be smart enough to decipher the following: /path/to/logs/access_log.www.*.(com|org|net|us) The filename format for my logs are: access_log.www.domain.com/net/org/us. does anyone know if any repositories have OpenSC built for EL4 ? I've been struggling with building this myself, trying to get an Aladdin eToken working with OpenSSL so we can use it for client authentication of an SSL session.

Yes - and for those suggesting ubuntu as better for a non-technical user I think the real question is whether the user will do any of their own changes (like adding new programs) and updates. If they do, ubuntu is probably a good choice. Hi all, Sorry for this newbie question. I am having a problem with yum on centos 4.7. When I try something like "yum update" I get the following error: file:///misc/CO4/updates/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 5] OSError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/misc/CO4/updates/repodata/repomd.xml' Trying other mirror. Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: update failure: repodata/repomd.xml from update: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try. Error: failure: repodata/repomd.xml from update: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try. I've tried "yum clean all" with no success. I'd be grateful for any help that I could get on this. Thanks. -tim

mdadm size issues

Hi, I am trying to create a 10 drive raid6 array. OS is Centos 5.3 (64 Bit) All 10 drives are 2T in size. device sd{a,b,c,d,e,f} are on my motherboard device sd{i,j,k,l} are on a pci express areca card (relevant lspci info below) #lspci 06:0e.0 RAID bus controller: Areca Technology Corp. ARC-1210 4-Port PCI-Express to SATA RAID Controller The controller is set to JBOD the drives. All drives have the same partition size # fdisk -l Disk /dev/sda: 2000.3 GB, 2000398934016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 243201 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 1 243201 1953512001 83 Linux .... I go about creating the array as follows # mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md3 --level=6 --raid-devices=10 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdd1 /dev/sde1 /dev/sdf1 /dev/sdi1 /dev/sdj1 /dev/sdk1 /dev/sdl1 mdadm: layout defaults to left-symmetric mdadm: chunk size defaults to 64K mdadm: size set to 1953511936K Continue creating array? As you can see mdadm sets the size to 1.9T. Looking around there was this limitation on older versions of mdadm if they are the 32 bit version. I am using the 64 bit most up to date version from Centos. Problem with raid0

Hey! I have big problem with my centos 5.1. I have two hard discs 500gig and 40gig and those are in RAID0. I would like to remowe the small 40gig hd and put new 500gig hd and i don't wan't raid0 anymore. How can i copy data from 40gig hd to 500gig hd and switch 40gig hd to new 500gig hd? Another question: Can i just copy all my files to windows laptop and if i wan't "backup" files? Please answer my talent in linux isn't very good.

I need to install APC (Alternative PHP Cache) but I'm getting a missing dependency error Missing Dependency: php = 5.1.6-23.2.el5_3 is needed by package php-devel. Hi all, i want to virtualize an existing Centos 5.x machine (intel xeon, 64 bit OS, Qlogic HBA) into a vmware 3.X VM that will not be connected to the SAN (hence no need for the HBA drivers). SATA controler req

Hello, I'm looking for a recomendation for a SATA controlers. In the range of 4-8 ports, either PCI or PCIe (for desktop use) and/or PCI-X, PCIe (for server use). I'd especially like it if the Linux driver was already in CentOS or easily added. Everytime I find something interesting, a google search shows up either the drivers is for 2.6.30 (ie, not CentOS), someone tried it and it was unstable, or it has a proprietary driver. They will be used as JBOD, with mdadm for RAID where I need it. Thank you, -Philip

Video capture under CentOS

I recently purchased a Diamond VC500 video capture device that runs on the USB. It has some interesting issues under Windoze, but I was wondering: I did a google for video catpreu and linux and most of what I found either said it can't be done or the software that did/does it is obsolete. I want to thank everyone for contributing to solving the implementation problem I was having. It seems in the end it was an "operator" problem. To summarize the results: - regarding sshd port change - uncomment port, and change the port number entry in /etc/ssh/sshd_config. Restart the sshd service. Update /etc/sysconfig/iptables to reflect the port number change from 22 to the port number specified in / etc/ssh/sshd_config, then restart iptables service. - PasswordAuthentication no - this requires an additional option to be change, "ChallengeResponseAuthentication no". Having made both of these changes, causes the login to abort is a valid ssh key is not specified. Promlem with broken yum/rpm

Hi all, I have lost/corrupted the libraries related to the expat package. This has caused rpm and yum to stop working effectively stopping my ability to manage my server. Recently a bug was reported by cmisare on the CentOS site that had exactly the same symptoms http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=3757 Btw rpm crashes with exactly the same message. I was hoping that cmisare, or someone else on this list, may be able to explain to me how he/she managed to get yum working again, as must be the case as it crashes in the first post but is working in the second post. Any help would be very much appreciated. Peter

MySQL setup: initial user weirdness

Hi, I've always been a bit puzzled by MySQL's initial setup. Right after installing MySQL, no password is set, so that's the first thing I care about. I know there's a way to do that with mysqldadmin, but hey, different ways lead to Saint-Bauzille-de-Montmel. # chkconfig mysqld on # service mysqld start # mysql -u root mysql> use mysql; mysql> select user, host, password from user; +------+-----------+----------+ | user | host | password | +------+-----------+----------+ | root | localhost | | | root | buildbox | | | root | 127.0.0.1 | | | | localhost | | | | buildbox | | +------+-----------+----------+ 5 rows in set (0.00 sec) This shows that in my initial setup, I have no less than five initial users. A root user for three different hosts (localhost, buildbox and 127.0.0.1), and an empty user for two different hosts (localhost and buildbox). I don't know if I'm expected to set five passwords (five times the same? five different passwords?) for these five entities, but what I usually do is just get rid of every initial user except root@localhost. In that case: mysql> delete from user where user = ''; Query OK, 2 rows affected (0.01 sec) mysql> select user, host, password from user; +------+-----------+----------+ | user | host | password | +------+-----------+----------+ | root | localhost | | | root | buildbox | | | root | 127.0.0.1 | | +------+-----------+----------+ 3 rows in set (0.00 sec) Here goes the empty user. installing 5.3 with 512M ram really slow

I was installing centos 5.3 x86_64 on a sempron 2.7G machine with 512M ram. The install started off fine then REALLY SLOWED down about 70% into install. I did have a swap space. after that it just crawled. I tried restart the install a couple times at 512M. Same thing around 70% the slow down. I then put in 1G of RAM and everything zipped on past and finished fine. Does 5.3 have minimum installation RAM requirements? I had not noticed. Does the same apply for running? 5.2 did not seem to have any issues running in 512M that I recall. Thanks for your comments. jerry

I have installed cento 5.3. I enabled the ssh deamon. I have found that 2 options that I normally use does respond as I expect. Has anyone else had similar problems with the following options in sshd_config: - Port 6666 - if I set the port to anything other than 22 (default), using ssh -p6666 name@servername, does not work. Yet if I leave keep the default, then ssh name@servername allows me to login. - PasswordAuthentication no - if I set this option to "no" (default is "yes"), and my ssh key is either missing or in error, I will be prompted for user system login password. If this is set to "no", it should not allow me to login if I have not ssh key specified or in error. Has anyone else run into this problem. Is there a workaround? What are my options? Please help.

Question about iostat output

Hello, We are planning to moving most of our servers to ESX but before buying our SAN, we want to do some I/O stats to see if iSCSI is enough or if we have to go with FC. So I found a plugin for Nagios that can log I/O stats with iostat. So far it's fine with single disk/one partition servers, but on our Oracle Database 10g server, we have two drives in RAID 1 (/dev/sda) and 4 other drives in RAID 10 (/dev/sdb). Xnest unable to connect with firewall enabled

Hi all, I have worked on both CentOS 5.2 and CentOS 5.3. In CentOS 5.2, I could connect to a remote X-server using Xnest binary provided by the package xorg-x11-server-Xnest-1.1.1-48.41.el5 with firewall settings enabled. I enabled the firewall settings from system-config-securitylevel. Now in CentOS 5.3 with firewall settings enabled, I am unable to connect to the remote X-server using Xnest (xorg-x11-server-Xnest-1.1.1-48.52.el5). To successfully connect, I have to either disable firewall settings or filter the TCP ports on which Xnest connects to the remote server. Is there an issue regarding firewall settings in CentOS 5.3 ? I want to connect to the remote X-server without disabling the firewall settings. How is possible ? Thanks in advance. Siddharth

I've added this to my dhcpd.conf log-facility local6; and added this to my syslog.conf local6.* /var/log/dhcpd.log It's still writing to dhcpd info to both log files. How do I stop this. I've googled but all suggested modifications I've made to the dhcpd.conf causes dhcpd to not start. Thanks Dan

Hi, My requirement is to use Xnest only. It was working seamlessly with 5.2 but not with 5.3 I am using this command to connect to the remote X-server. Xnest :1 -geometry 800x600 -query *<ip-address-of-X-server>* Can anyone confirm the same behavior? Or shall I file the bug in bugzilla? Hi, I need some help to clarify TTY and virtual consoles. Thanks a lot. 1. I learned that to switch from one TTY to another, one must be at the physical machine. Does the same apply to virtual consoles? 2. My /etc/inittab includes the following. network not starting and maybe other services in a virtual machine

I am installing centos 5.3 i386 in a virtual machine. I am using kvm-87 (which I use for other images just fine). The box installed fine, it boots up I can login but NONE of the services are starting . When watching the boot up process it goes from the "Welcome to CentOS 5.3 " directly to mounting the partitions and a login prompt. All the services are not being started. What didnt happen at install? or what do I check now. /etc/inittab looks normal. Thanks, Jerry

How does LVM decide which Physical Volume to write to?

Hi everyone. This isn't specifically a CentOS question, since it could apply for any distro but I hope someone can answer it anyway. I took the following steps but was puzzled by the outcome of the test at the end: 1. Create a RAID1 array called md3 with two 750GB drives 2. Create a RAID1 array called md9 with two 500GB drives 3. Initialise md3 then md9 as physical volumes (pvcreate) 4. Create a new volume group called "3ware" with md3 (helps me remember what controller the disks are on) 5. Use vgextend and add md9 to the 3ware volume group. 6. Add a logical volume filling the volume group then create a ext3 filesystem on the entire volume. Now I started moving a lot of data onto the volume and iostat said all the data was being written to md9. Why that array? How does it decide which physical volume to write to? I could not find any documentation or information online about how exactly this works. Thanks! Oliver

Hi, I have an Nginx http proxy server with SSL. What I want to do is: If a client that has a certificate is trying to access the server's address, he is to be redirected to our production server, to certain URL. If a client doesn't have a certificate, he is to be redirected to the same production server, but a different URL. The problem is that if the client doesn't have a certificate, he gets the following error: 400 Bad Request The SSL certificate error ------------------------------------------------------------------------ nginx/0.6.39 I've tried the following: server { listen 8443; ssl on; ssl_certificate /etc/httpd/ssl/proxy-ssl.cer; ssl_certificate_key /etc/httpd/ssl/server.key; ssl_client_certificate /etc/httpd/ssl/ca-bundle.crt; ssl_verify_client on ............................................................................................. ............................................................................................. error_page 400 /400.html; location = /400.html { root /usr/share/nginx/html; but the error page 400 statement is simply ignored. Does anyone have an idea how can I do it ? I tried to find the 400 error page, thinking maybe I can make the redirect there, but it is simply not to be found. P.S. my programming/scripting skills aren't any.....

Hi, I successfully managed to use SSL on a local webserver for testing purposes, following the section "Using SSL" in the Chapter "Using Apache" of the "Definitive Guide to CentOS". Now I wonder: how can I use SSL with virtual hosts? I have several virtual hosts defined. Apache: confusion about virtual hosts and DNS on a local network

Hi, I set up a webserver with Apache on one of the machines on the local network. There's a DNS configured for the LAN, with a dummy domain name (presbytere.local), and every machine is pingable by its hostname. The webserver runs on the machine 'buildbox'. The webserver actually has two (static) websites on it, for testing and fiddling purposes. Each site's pages are stored respectively under /var/www/html/microlinux and /var/www/html/kikinovak. I can reach the two websites from any machine on the local network by opening a web browser at http://buildbox/microlinux/ or http://buildbox.presbytere.local/microlinux/ for the first website, and http://buildbox/kikinovak resp. http://buildbox.presbytere.local/kikinovak for the second website. So far so good. Now I'd like to setup two virtual hosts on the server, so I can access the first site via http://microlinux.buildbox and the second site via http://kikinovak.buildbox. I tried various combinations that seemed to make sense, but to no avail. Here is a list of files that I have not (knowingly) modified that do not pass rpm verification immediately after I installed centos 5.3. I am not really sure what this means - are the packagers sending out sloppy rpms, or is something going around modifying stuff? Other than the texmf stuff, the list seems to consist entirely of config files. Does yum or rpm or something do some instant reconfiguring when a package gets installed? Maybe figure out if there is a post-install script and whether it does something. Googling, I see lots of hits suggesting that 'yum info <packagename>' will show what repo it came from. Testing this on a couple of the packages above, I get 'Repo : installed'. Does that mean that the rpm came from the install CD? Am I missing something, is there an easier way>? mahalo, Dave

Hi, I'm currently fiddling with protecting sections of a website with .htaccess. I suggest that you seriously consider whether you, yourself, would care to donate money to a project where you knew from the outset that few, if any of, the funds collected were employed to improve the project in any tangible way. Your motive to donate would be what, exactly? Resources are limited and therefor they are directed according to the values held by the people doing the directing. If donated money is spent on parties, drugs, houses, entertainment, or otherwise personally enriching individuals rather than advancing the cause for which it is directed then why would one not choose to simply spend this on oneself instead? If not that then why not at least direct it towards some project where it might make a positive difference? There is another point to consider. Governments take a very, very dim view of tax evasion. Who or what is declaring the income from and remitting the taxes on donations? What taxes have been remitted on past donations, and where? I think that you will find that individuals associated with putting CentOS out are themselves liable for income earned and not declared if there is not some systematic mechanism in place to ensure compliance with the applicable laws. Be assured that such laws do exist and are enforced in each and every country that the maintainers reside in. The Internet is not terra nullius. If you provide a product or service and accept valuable consideration in return then you have earned income. It is tempting, and emotionally satisfying, to argue that cannot be so, that there is no relationship between the two because one is not compelled to buy CentOS. Sadly, this proves not to be the case. If you get income from any source, for whatever reason, then you must declare it and pay whatever tax is levied. Whether you received it personally or as part of an identifiable collective you are personally liable. Now, what happens if some, or many, or all of the CentOS maintainers ends up dealing with say one, or two or N taxation authorities over the small matter of the taxes outstanding on the thousands of Euros already donated? What happens then to the future of the CentOS project? What happens to the probability of a successful successor project? Somehow, I do not think that such a turn of events would improve the odds. Trust, well that is another matter. The number of sports clubs, churches, charities and service organisations that have been ripped off by individuals who betrayed their fellow members' trust is uncountable. No doubt most, if not all, of these people once warranted the trust reposed in them. However, as the Bernie Madoff case shows once again, trust without verification invites betrayal. Money is a very corrosive material to place in the hands of people absent public oversight. It needs to be treated with both caution and circumspection lest it destroy that which it is intended to aid.
