Persisting module loading

Greetings! I have loaded a few modules: modprobe ip_nat_ftp modprobe ip_conntrack_ftp And now I'd like to persist those so they're loaded when the system boots up. I'm doing this by means of calling a specific script from /etc/rc.d/rc.local but I believe there must be something cleaner than that, like another existing file. I tried the /etc/rc.modules thing as shown in http://centos.org/docs/5/html/Deployment_Guide-en-US/s1-kernel-modules-pers… but /etc/rc.modules was not being called automatically until I called it from /etc/rc.d/rc.local Thanks in advance, Diogo

Repair Filesystem prompt , after inode has illegal blocks

hi All, A fault on our SAN dropped us down to a read-only filesystem and after reboot, we have an "Unexpected Inconsistency" and I am being instructed by the boot to run fsck manually without -a or -p (this was after I think processing around 15% of the filesystem) The specific message is "inode 27344909 has illegal blocks" I recall running fsck some years ago on smaller and simpler systems - am broadly familiar with what it is but have no expertise in using it to repair a filesystem. Would be grateful for advice on whats the quickest / usual way to get us back up from this. We do have a good backup for restoring unrecoverable files - i.e. I assume I am going to end up asking fsck to repair the filesystem itself and then clean up any mess that results. This is fsck 1.39 , Linux version 2.6.18-92.1.18.el5 , Red Hat 4.1.2-42 thanks for any tips. Problems setting terminal size in termcap/xterm

Hi I'm trying to set the terminal size in /usr/share/vte/termcap/xterm, but it seems that CentOS doesn't look at this file. I know this works in REHL 4.7 and Fedora 10, 11. Does anyone know a work around to this? Thanks Marcelo

abnormal freezes

Hi, I'm having a linux box running with Centos 5.3 x86 (kernel 2.6.18-128.7.1.el5xen) which is freezing time to time and can't login neither trough console. The only thing what I can do, to pass the situation is to power off/on the pc. The pc is used only as a torrent server running with transmission 1.74. There are days when 400GB data traffic goes through the pc, and there are days when after 50Mb freezes. What I checked: - Network card doesn't show any error (netstat -in) - /var/log/messages (nothing serious is mentioned) - Router logs (nothing) - temperature (sensors show normal parameters, which are true measured manually also) Do you have any idea how to troubleshoot the situation, what I'm missing ? I'm thinking that there may be some hardware issues, but the thing was running fine for 1 month, and didn't do much beside yum update on it. Clarification on Linux CD or DVD Writing

Dear All, Currently working setup is CentOS4.4 Linux I tried to google-out, but i can't able to findout I need some clarification about CD writer support 1. How can i findout inserted disc is CD or DVD from command line 2. How can i findout inserted disc is empty from command line 3. hi All, Re below - thanks for the replies to the fsck question. I have run fsck -r /data and this eventually completed with several changes made. Now I am getting the following error from the qla2xxx driver on boot . . . qla2xxx 0000:05:0d.0: Mailbox command timeout occured. Scheduling ISP abort. qla2xxx 0000:05:0d.0: Mailbox command timeout occured. Scheduling ISP abort. . etc . It looks like some administration of the HSV controlled SAN device layer itself is required - we are now not even getting the boot process as far as the filesystem layer. (Anybody know exactly what that message indicates - e.g. whether a hardware fault or HSV SAN config issue ?) googling this , somebody suggested a media scan from my storage array firmware, then backing up the array and reinitializing logical disks and started fresh....however if anybody has some more specific info than that, that would be great. trouble playing quicktimes at apple.com/trailers

I've been able to view the movie trailers at apple.com/trailers for years on my old Centos box (5.3). so in July I built a new box and also used Centos 5.3. I recall being able to view them on the new box too, back in July. now, none of them work on either the old or new box. Firefox by default uses mplayer for this purpose. mplayer starts up, says it's playing it displays the url on the screen for about a half second then stops. over and over again. I should have all the right plugins since it's worked before. Is anyone else having trouble with that? or to ask another way, can any of you still watch them? CentOS 5.3 - Activating laptop wireless card

I've just installed CentOS 5.3 on my Dell laptop and it seems to have detected and set-up my wireless card (BCM 4311) correctly as eth1. However, so far I haven't been able to activate it and have read the wiki http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Laptops/Wireless#head-320d6fcf09b7e16e0b15d19… which indicates that this card isn't actually supported in CentOS - but there has been an improvement over earlier kernels because the card wasn't even detected in CentOS 5.0. So do I need to get the Windows driver from http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php and do I need ndiswrapper as well? Andy

cups / cli stopped print jobs problem

On occasion, we get a printer that becomes disabled, and jobs begin to queue up. When the issue is resolved, we re-enable the printer and usually all the jobs print out. However, sometimes the first job never prints, but the others do. The cups interface shows the job is stopped. IfI restart the job in the cups interface, it prints. Is there a way to determine, via the command line, if a print job is in the stopped state, or a queue has jobs in this state. Also, is there a way to restart the job if its stopped. Linux Zombie Web Servers

Linked below are details about a new outbreak of hijacked linux web servers that dispense malware. http://blog.unmaskparasites.com/2009/09/11/dynamic-dns-and-botnet-of-zombie… I would highly recommend that you use nmap to scan all your Linux webservers that are connected to the Internet to see if they are listening on port 8080. The best I can tell, there are no articles concerning how these guys installed nginx or what is contained on a machine that has been compromised. But the best way to tell is to see if you are listening on port 8080 (if you are not supposed to be listening there). 8080 is a common port for java apps to be running on, so listening on 8080 is not always necessarily bad. yum issue with extras repo?

Hello All, As you can see below I am having a problem checking for updates. This happens repeatedly. I have to kill the process then rerun. I have tried "yum clean all" but no joy - the process hangs again on "extras" - see second listing below. Suggestions? Supermicro Adaptec AIC-9410 HostRAID controller

It has 2 "ICH Raid Codebase" options in the Bios (Intel and Adaptec); neither of which seem to change Linux's behavior. The interesting part though, choosing either Adaptec or Intel, then performing an 'lspci' always displays "Intel Corp 631xESP/632xESP SATA RAID Controller (rev 09)". I've seen several people post on a variety of mailing lists (typically using older CentOS revisions), but it doesn't appear many were successful. It seems most swap to software raid. 2) When using this internal host raid controller, shouldn't the raided devices appear as a single device like other traditional scsi controllers? Regardless of the raid options I choose, Linux still continues to see both drives (/dev/sda and /dev/sdb). Is this a function of being 'HostRAID'? 3) If you've been able to get it to work, which driver did you use? Thus far, I've tried 2 drivers. 1st driver: adpahci -- Unsuccessful I downloaded it from supermicro's website. ftp.supermicro.com/driver/SATA/Adaptec_ESB2/Linux/Redhat/adpahci.rhel5.i686… After successfully loading the image and inserting the module using kickstart, nothing useful happens, other than several /sys entries added. (NOTE: I had to change the internal cpio archive pathing from `2.6.18-8.el5' to `2.6.18-128.el5'). 2nd driver: aic94xx -- Unsuccessful The driver is built-in via a patch to the Redhat stock kernel. Other than saying that it's loaded, it also does nothing useful outside of /sys entries. Several mailing lists and documents pointed to using the 'attach_HostRAID' option, however, it doesn't exist. Using this option with `insmod' (or modprobe) fails. 3rd driver: adp94xx -- In the works I downloaded this driver from Adaptec's website: http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/speed/sas/linux/adp94xx-1_0_8-12_src_tgz.htm So far, I'm not able to get it to compile because I'm trying to create a patch file so that it incorporates all of the contents of the tarball. Any ideas on where to go from here? I'd really like to avoid software raid. Hello everyone, If create a folder called "whatever" under /var, the context is: root:object_r:var_t /var/whatever/ That's expected as it is under /var. If I then change its type: chcont -t httpd_sys_content_t /var/whatever The context looks like: root:object_r:httpd_sys_content_t /var/whatever/ My question is...Shouldn't a relabeling of the filesystem change the type of this directory back to var_t? I just performed a relabel (/.autorelabel) and the directory stayed with httpd_sys_content_t. I thought that the only way this could happen was if I used "semanage fcontext -a ...." so that a new line would be appended in: /etc/selinux//etc/selinux/targeted/contexts/files/file_contexts.local. Not only that, If I perform "matchpathcon /var/whatever" I still get var_t as its default type. Then again, why it kept the httpd_sys_content_t after the relabel? Thansk in advance, Jorge

mysql query logging

Nothing I have done so far seems to work # cat /etc/my.cnf [mysqld] datadir=/var/lib/mysql socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock user=mysql # Default to using old password format for compatibility with mysql 3.x # clients (those using the mysqlclient10 compatibility package). old_passwords=1 max_allowed_packet=2MB [mysqld_safe] log-error=/var/log/mysqld.log pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid log-query=/var/log/mysql-query.log empty and then I added to /etc/init.d/mysqld get_mysql_option mysqld_safe log "/var/log/mysqld-query.log" querylogfile="$result" -and- start(){ touch "$querylogfile" chown mysql:mysql "$querylogfile" chmod 0640 "$querylogfile" but nothing is logged. which ldap do you like

To All, I am going to try my hand at setting up an ldap server. I have looked at what is available and would like to ask your opinions as to what is a good one to have. openldap, centos-ds, and freeipa seem to be high on everyone's list. Which one do you like, and does it have a good setup tutorial I could use. So far the tutorials I have looked at seem out of sync with the curent versions of ldap servers. Greg Ennis

I was trying to configure the jukebox by SSHing into it, and I could only perform sound tasks, including running alsamixer and mpd, as root. Comparing to another CentOS box, the jukebox's /dev/dsp was owned by root and the other CentOS box's /dev/dsp was owned by the logged in user. Aha, I figured I needed to be logged in as a user to the physical jukebox machine in order to grant ownership to the soundcard. The jukebox had no user logged into it, as it had just rebooted. A solution, of course, would be to enable autologin on the jukebox. I can't give the technical answer as to why this happens, but just how it happens and how I managed to get it to work. yum repo priority

Hey folks, I'm setting up some kickstart files for our standard configs, and need to install munin-node, which of course does not come from you folks, So I set up the Dag Wieers repository but in the repo file I set it to "disabled" so that it will never get used by mistake. Then when adding munin-node I do : yum --enablerepo=dag -y install munin-node But that pulls in a bunch of dependencies. And I'm not sure where it will pull them from. I know that Dag has basically everything, but I only want to get munin-node from there. How do I ensure this happens? I could do a hack and now that I have a list of dependencies I could precede the above call with another to add those, but keep Dag repo turned off. question on wget

Hello, I've got an ftp site, not mine, that has content on it that i want to download. It's not anonymous so it requires a log in. The problem is either the ISP has a bandwidth throttle or the admin does, in either case inconsistently as to the point in the file, but i rarely get a complete download. I'm using ncftp. I was wondering if either ncftpget or wget could do like an auto get and keep getting more and more until it has the complete file? Thanks. Dave.

Hi, Recently I build a filesystem in a device using mkfs.ext4 but when I tried to mount the device show this error: mount: unknown filesystem type 'ext4' But when I build the same device with mkfs.ext4dev I can mont the device without problem. Creating a personal repo

Hello, I'm wanting to create a yum repo for what is at this point rpm development for personal use, i might eventually open it up but right now i have some rpms i need to debug. I've installed createrepo but the docs i've read indicate that i have to install the base distros rpms, in repos i've seen via a webview they only had packages that they built in the repo. Thanks. OK this is talking about downloading from rhn but does anyone have any tips with getting mrepo on a CentOS 5 box to be able to download from rhn reliably? Seemingly everything is configured OK as it downloads a package or 2 but mainly bombs out with... Error communicating with server. patching from different directory

Howdy, I have a diff file in my /var/tmp and would like to apply patch to a file in a different directory (other than /va/tmp). I tried using patch with -d switch, but that doesn't work. It complains abt 'patch: **** Can't open patch file tilda.diff : No such file or directory'. Do I need to copy my diff file to the directory where original file resides? Or is there any other way round? - CS.

Hey all, I installed a while ago two CentOS 5.3 servers. One of them was running Samba and another OpenLDAP. I configured Samba to act as a PDC on the network and everything was working fine, I was already on policies rules and desktop migrations. One day, another analyst changed our subnet, and the domain was implemented only on our sector for start. After the subnet change, we had a comunication problem and we figured out it that we needed to configure samba as WINS server too. After a while, he changed Proxy requests for WINS to samba, only as a test (some of the requests). Before we could configure samba, BUM, the samba server crashed and after some crash/restart it showed this on boot time (of course when sshd was starting) * /etc/rc3.d/S55sshd: fork: Resource Temporarily Unavailable After that, ALL CentOS installations have this problem after yum update: * /etc/init.d/functions: fork: Resource Temporarily Unavailable I have only one clue: EPEL repository. I installed and configured yum-priorities of course. I´m on my last test installation and I am sending now this e-mail because if it crashes and i have no resolution, they are going to ask me for another distro install, and I like CentOS too much to do that. Just one last thing: its a 6000-7000 user environment and we're on a hurry, so I can't do long time testing or stay with something that may one day crash. Thanks, Gustavo Pastorino

Hi - I've been asked to turn on autofsck on ext3 filesystems for CentOS 4 and 5 servers on reboot after a crash by adding AUTOFSCK_TIMEOUT=5 AUTOFSCK_DEF_CHECK=yes to the file /etc/sysconfig/autofsck Is this necessary for ext3 filesystems? I have a problem that i dont know how to tackle ... i have done kickstarting many times but know it seems i hit an wall ... i try to kickstart through nfs an 64 bit centos .. just after taking ip trough dhcp i receive an SIGSEGV ! i dont know what to do anymore as the same ks.cfg worked very well until now .. bonding driver with arp detection

Hello - Was wondering if anyone is running the bonding network driver in active/backup mode using arp_validate? I'm trying to deal with really crappy network switches from Dell and I thought I could work around their faults in the short term by switching from link monitoring to arp monitoring. But I ran into a situation just now that seems even arp monitoring isn't enough. This is my config for the system: CentOS 5.2 base 2.6.18-128.1.10.el5 kernel (I think it's a 5.3 kernel) Ethernet Channel Bonding Driver: v3.2.4 (January 28, 2008) Bonding Mode: fault-tolerance (active-backup) Primary Slave: None Currently Active Slave: eth1 MII Status: up MII Polling Interval (ms): 0 Up Delay (ms): 0 Down Delay (ms): 0 ARP Polling Interval (ms): 1000 ARP IP target/s (n.n.n.n form): 10.16.1.1, 10.16.1.254 Slave Interface: eth0 MII Status: up Link Failure Count: 2 Permanent HW addr: 00:21:9b:8d:f1:0c Slave Interface: eth1 MII Status: up Link Failure Count: 1 -- Both IPs are supposed to be redundant, .1 is a pair of stacked piece of shit Dell gigabit switches, the other is a pair of F5 LTM load balancers. System had been running fine for about the past 9 days since I enabled this stuff, and then for some reason could no longer talk to 10.16.1.254, looking at tcpdump I saw the system almost flooding the link for arp requests for that address and maybe getting one in 10 answered. Communication with 10.16.1.1 was fine by contrast. 40 other systems on the same LAN communicate with both addresses constantly so I know both were more or less OK, it was something with the switch itself(have seen behavior on multiple Dell switches where they decide to stop forwarding traffic, which is what prompted me to switch from link monitoring to arp monitoring) At the time the system was running on eth0, so I brought that interface down and it immediately failed over to eth1 and things were ok again. I have since failed it back to eth0 and things are still fine. What I'd like to do if possible is configure the bonding driver to fail if either of the arp attempts fails, as far as I can see the default is even if 1 succeeds then the driver thinks it's ok. Looking at the arp_validate option it seems it only applies to slaves, not to the active link. Is there any thing I can do to make the driver fail if even one of the two addresses is not responding? I have noticed that in some cases the fail over does work, checking several systems they all have at least 1 link failure detected for each interface. Longer term my goal is to replace the switches entirely, been pushing that for about a month now. just goes to show you get what you pay for when you buy crap equipment(wasn't my idea), sigh. thanks nate

This morning I am getting a message on my screen that: There was a problem registering the panel with the bonobo-activation server error code is 1 It further suggests run bonobo-slay to perhaps take care of the situation. When I run bonobo-slay it says: bonobo-slay Can not open directory /usr/lib/bonobo/servers No such file or directory What do I do now? Thanks, Jerry

Request advise regarding Driver for Intel Motherboard

Hello All I made the mistake of assuming all Intel motherboards would be Linux compatible out of the box and bought one without checking support information. And now on initial install the Network is not working....the Network port is not detected at all. I have bought an Intel board DG41RQI (http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/DG41RQ/index.htm) which does not support Linux Out of Box. I am using a Core 2 Duo E7200 64 bit processor. I am installing CentOS 5.x XEN, minimal install for a XEN dom0. The Intel Linux Support page links to this page here http://forgeftp.novell.com/driver-process/pub/update/realtek/sle10sp2/commo… and lists a lot of drivers. Can someone please advise me which ones I need to install for my particular motherboard & processor type? Also, will these drivers clash with yum updatation from CentOS repos? Can someone please guide and if possible, comment on issues I will face. Intend to install minimal xen dom0 install and couple of low utilization servers and linux desktop. Or - if there is in CentOS repo (or EPEL) package, that can mount directory over internet using private key and make differential backup (like rdiff-backup). What are you doing right?

I'm a sysadmin by trade, so in my daily work I get to try out all kinds of new technology including operating systems. Over the last year I've noticed that many other distros won't run on some of my hardware (e.g. a Thinkpad T61, Dell E510, GX620) at work and home. But CentOS does. Without fail. Every time (well, there's that old Dell Inspiron 1200 that sits in the kitchen... but we won't go there). Last night I had a hard disk crash on one of my home boxes, so I decided to use it as an opportunity to try out another well known RHEL clone that is also currently at v5.3. Although the md5sum on the disk checked out it wouldn't even boot. I then tried their Live CD. Still no good. So for good measure I tried the latest (v9.x) from another project (you know, the one with the orange and brown color scheme). NG. So the question is, what is CentOS doing *right*? A very sincere thanks to the CentOS project team for all their hard work in making a distro I know I can always rely on.
