Simple web server with Apache: web page permissions ?

Hi, I'm currently sinking my teeth into the fine "Definitive Guide to CentOS". Right now I'm reading the chapter about Apache. One thing puzzles me: no mention is made of web page permissions. Let's say I'm using Apache's default configuration for setting up the most simple no-frills web server, e. g. no virtual hosts, only a series of static HTML pages in /var/www/html. Q: what permissions should I define for these pages? I remember having setup some web servers on Debian, and the tradition was that everything under /var/www/html (as in this example) was to be owned by user www-data and group www-data. What's the "tradition" with RHEL/CentOS? Cheers, Niki

Centos 5.4 'prerelease-access' - is there such a thing?

Hi, excluding the Frankengrade from CENTOS5.3 to upstream RHEL5.4, is there are procedure / repository access / nightly builds / ... to what will be CENTOS 5.4? URLs? Howtos? Discussion threads or notes? I checked help, wiki and forums and google, but came up empty. Of course, this kind of use is depending on the way the new upstream RHEL sources are processed, so maybe there won't be a complete set of packages at all until maybe one or two weeks before the release. But again I got no lucky search hits for this kind of internals either. hi All, thanks for the responses. After being dropped into the # Filesystem repair prompt, ( on account of "inode 27344909 has illegal blocks" ) following warm reboot (via "reboot") after finding (SAN ) filesystem in read-only mode yesterday morning (possibly because of HBA fault on SAN) , I ran fsck -r /data (Linux version 2.6.18-92.1.18.el5 , Red Hat 4.1.2-42 , ext3 filesystem) This took a couple of hours or so , prompting me for various changes all of which I accepted. This appeared to complete OK, but then the system would not boot, with the following error from the qla2xxx driver. . . qla2xxx 0000:05:0d.0: Mailbox command timeout occurred. Scheduling ISP abort. qla2xxx 0000:05:0d.0: Mailbox command timeout occurred. Scheduling ISP abort. . etc However after powering down the system and cold-booting, the system was able to boot up and mount the repaired filesystem without any obvious damage, but with abnormal not to mention scary looking boot messages and ongoing warnings from multipath. This morning (as I sort of expected) the filesystem had dropped back down to read-only mode, but meanwhile the source of our woes was identified, a fibre port on the SAN controller which was degraded but not completely failed, so that there had been no clean failover to the twin controller, and therefore a degraded virtual device was presented to the O/S, with consequence for the filesystem. After that port and controller was quarantined, this time around I did a cold power-off reboot of the server , and this time there was a more normal looking boot and the filesystem came up normally without any repair being requested. (My hypothesis is that in this situation - i.e. ext3 filesystem has put itself in read-only mode - a warm boot , via reboot, does not cleanly remount the filesystem and apply the journal quite like a cold power-off reboot does. I think it is likely that the lengthy session of me answering "yes" to fsck's interactive repair, the first time around, simply applied all of the fixes that would automatically have been done from the journal , had I cold-rebooted in the first place. However that is only a hunch. But I will be making sure to do cold power-off reboots in general, in future.) Another lesson is that a sophisticated system of twin SAN controllers with failover does not protect against a situation where a device is degrading rather than failing completely. Hello everyone, Let say 5.4 goes out today; If I fully update (today) my 5.2 system...will it be equivalent to 5.4 (all RPM packages with same version/release number?)? LF examples - using site-specific RPMs for config

Hey folks, A week or two ago someone mentioned something about using their own home-grown RPMs for managing config info on their boxes. I really like this idea and would like to learn more about it. Are there some examples out there? I have lots of custom config info and think this would be an ideal way to manage it. Others mentioned puppet and CF engine which probably have their merits as well. But I don't really have time at the moment to learn those. problem installing CentOS 5.3

I have a small fixed ip network at home, running red hat 9 on two amd k6 500 Mhz boxes. One has 256 M memory and the other 320 M. They pretty much meet my needs, but lately I have detected that the internet sites I frequent are requiring some more modern software than I can run. I attempted to install Fedora 8, but that failed on the AMD processors. So I ordered a set of CentOS 5.3 i386 disks. The CentOS install fails also. I could get the first screen up, offering choices of how to boot, and if I asked for memtest86 that would start. (I had verified memory earlier, during my F8 attempts). However, any other choice resulted in a reboot (generally during loading of vmlinux). Sometimes the disk wouldn't be recognized as bootable. I have convinced myself that the disks are OK (see below) and that I must need either better hardware or more memory (but this is the i386 version of CentOS 5.3) or some parameter on the install that I haven't tried (and I've tried about all I have found or remember). I would appreciate any help. What I've done so far: At first I thought that the CentOS 1of6 disk must be bad (couldn't even run a mediacheck) and emailed the vendor. Then it occurred to me that I could perhaps download and burn disk 1of6 and use that to get the install started. (Up until my attempts at F8 I had not had the capability to burn a CD. While trying with F8 I bought a used "intel inside" computer with a broken XP system on it. I blew that away but F8 found problems with the hard disk and wouldn't install. I managed to install RedHat 9, which gave me access to the CD). I reaized that the process would be a bit "iffy" on a box with hard-disk problems, and also I had never burned a cd, but googled around for instructions and plunged in. I downloaded an ios, checked it with md5sum and it was OK. I copied it to the "new" computer via NFS and checked it again: OK. I burned a CD using cdrecord, and the burn appeared to work. The result behaved much like the original had. I tried two more times, varying stuff that I thought might affect the burn, and always got the same sort of behavior. Finally I tried mounting (on a RH9 box) each of the four disks 1of6 I now had and copied (from /dev/cdrom rather than /mnt/cdrom, so as to avoid separating out the files) each to a separate directory and compared them. All three that I burned were identical. The "store bought" disk was a little larger, but compared OK up to EOF on the other (and I recall reading that mass-produced disks might be different in their padding). So I am convinced now that there is nothing wrong with either the original or recently burned disks 1of6 and the problem must either be requiring better/more hardware (but this is the i386 version of cent OS) or some parameter on the install I have never heard of. Again, any advice would be appreciated. Buz

problem with a repo

Hello, I've got rpmforge and epel on centos 5.3. I'm trying to do an install of perl-Image-Info for spamassassin image scanning. The package was picked up in rpmforge since first, but it is failing to install because a dependency is missing. I added perl-Image-Info to rpmforge's excludepkgs line and tried to install the package again this time thinking it would pull from epel. This did not occur yum still tried to fetch from rpmforge. For my excludepkgs line i tried: excludepkgs=package1,package2,perl-Image-Info and since the changes weren't picked up i did: excludepkgs=package1 package2 perl-Image-Info Any help appreciated. Securely backing up Linux machines to NAS?

I have been tasked with having a Buffalo Terastation Pro 2 NAS box, likely to be connected to a Linux box via samba, be the storage device to back up mostly Ubuntu and Centos systems. The trick is, the machines to be backed up need to do so in an automated fashion and make a secure, encrypted connection to my Linux box hosting the NAS. The NAS does have SSL enabled for web admin access, though the same login credentials are used to authenticate the Linux host via samba to the NAS. So what are the simplest options to back up the Linux hosts? rsync does come to mind, but how to do so securely from each host? I'd consider something via ssh, but that would mean an interactive login, and encrypting individual files on the hosts is not an option. NFS is also available on the NAS, but considering the security concerns, I will not use that, nor do I want to enable any more services on the linux machines being backed up than necessary, meaning samba is not an option, unless it remains the ONLY one. I ONLY plan to use samba to mount the NAS to my Linux server, unless someone comes up with a more secure method, or even away to negate the need of the Linux server and permit the hosts to back up directly to the NAS... Persisting iproute2 routes and rules

Greetings! I have defined a few routes and rules with: ip route add ... ip rule add ... And now I'd like to persist those so they're loaded when the system boots up. I'm doing this by means of calling a specific script from /etc/rc.d/rc.local but I believe there must be something cleaner than that, like another existing file. Thanks in advance, Diogo

Problems with Adobe flash-plugin and Firefox-3.5.x under CentOs-5.3 (yum up to date)

Hi, I am running 32-bit Firefox-3.5.3 on Centos-5.3 (64-bit kernel) on a Dell Precision M65 laptop. This is likely a Adobe problem, but maybe someone else has seen this before. Please CC me, as I only receive the digest version of the list. When using the 10.0.32.18-release version of the flash-plugin, trying to access *any* page containing flash (e.g. www.adobe.com) causes the browser to die. This also happens with version 10.0.22.87. Version 9.0.115.0 works fine. To avoid problems with add-ons, Firefox is started with "-safe-mode". Opinions on bonding modes?

I am working on setting up an NFS server, which will mainly serve files to web servers, and I want to setup two bonds. I have a question regarding *which* bonding mode to use. None of the documentation I have read suggests any mode is "better" than other with the exception of specific use cases (e.g. switch does not support 802.3ad, active-backup). Since my switch *does* support 802.3ad, including layers 2,3 and 4 hashing, should I use mode=4? Or would one of the other modes be "better" for providing fail-over and link-aggregation, specifically balance-tlb or balance-alb. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks, Rick

Persisting module loading

Greetings! I have loaded a few modules: modprobe ip_nat_ftp modprobe ip_conntrack_ftp And now I'd like to persist those so they're loaded when the system boots up. I'm doing this by means of calling a specific script from /etc/rc.d/rc.local but I believe there must be something cleaner than that, like another existing file. hi All, A fault on our SAN dropped us down to a read-only filesystem and after reboot, we have an "Unexpected Inconsistency" and I am being instructed by the boot to run fsck manually without -a or -p (this was after I think processing around 15% of the filesystem) The specific message is "inode 27344909 has illegal blocks" I recall running fsck some years ago on smaller and simpler systems - am broadly familiar with what it is but have no expertise in using it to repair a filesystem. Would be grateful for advice on whats the quickest / usual way to get us back up from this. We do have a good backup for restoring unrecoverable files - i.e. I assume I am going to end up asking fsck to repair the filesystem itself and then clean up any mess that results. This is fsck 1.39 , Linux version 2.6.18-92.1.18.el5 , Red Hat 4.1.2-42 thanks for any tips. Problems setting terminal size in termcap/xterm

Hi I'm trying to set the terminal size in /usr/share/vte/termcap/xterm, but it seems that CentOS doesn't look at this file. I know this works in REHL 4.7 and Fedora 10, 11. Does anyone know a work around to this? Thanks Marcelo

abnormal freezes

Hi, I'm having a linux box running with Centos 5.3 x86 (kernel 2.6.18-128.7.1.el5xen) which is freezing time to time and can't login neither trough console. The only thing what I can do, to pass the situation is to power off/on the pc. The pc is used only as a torrent server running with transmission 1.74. There are days when 400GB data traffic goes through the pc, and there are days when after 50Mb freezes. What I checked: - Network card doesn't show any error (netstat -in) - /var/log/messages (nothing serious is mentioned) - Router logs (nothing) - temperature (sensors show normal parameters, which are true measured manually also) Do you have any idea how to troubleshoot the situation, what I'm missing ? I'm thinking that there may be some hardware issues, but the thing was running fine for 1 month, and didn't do much beside yum update on it. Clarification on Linux CD or DVD Writing

hi All, Re below - thanks for the replies to the fsck question. I have run fsck -r /data and this eventually completed with several changes made. Now I am getting the following error from the qla2xxx driver on boot . . . qla2xxx 0000:05:0d.0: Mailbox command timeout occured. Scheduling ISP abort. qla2xxx 0000:05:0d.0: Mailbox command timeout occured. Scheduling ISP abort. . etc . It looks like some administration of the HSV controlled SAN device layer itself is required - we are now not even getting the boot process as far as the filesystem layer. (Anybody know exactly what that message indicates - e.g. whether a hardware fault or HSV SAN config issue ?) googling this , somebody suggested a media scan from my storage array firmware, then backing up the array and reinitializing logical disks and started fresh....however if anybody has some more specific info than that, that would be great. trouble playing quicktimes at apple.com/trailers

I've been able to view the movie trailers at apple.com/trailers for years on my old Centos box (5.3). so in July I built a new box and also used Centos 5.3. I recall being able to view them on the new box too, back in July. now, none of them work on either the old or new box. Firefox by default uses mplayer for this purpose. mplayer starts up, says it's playing it displays the url on the screen for about a half second then stops. over and over again. I should have all the right plugins since it's worked before. Is anyone else having trouble with that? or to ask another way, can any of you still watch them? CentOS 5.3 - Activating laptop wireless card

I've just installed CentOS 5.3 on my Dell laptop and it seems to have detected and set-up my wireless card (BCM 4311) correctly as eth1. However, so far I haven't been able to activate it and have read the wiki http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Laptops/Wireless#head-320d6fcf09b7e16e0b15d19… which indicates that this card isn't actually supported in CentOS - but there has been an improvement over earlier kernels because the card wasn't even detected in CentOS 5.0. So do I need to get the Windows driver from http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php and do I need ndiswrapper as well? Andy

cups / cli stopped print jobs problem

On occasion, we get a printer that becomes disabled, and jobs begin to queue up. When the issue is resolved, we re-enable the printer and usually all the jobs print out. However, sometimes the first job never prints, but the others do. The cups interface shows the job is stopped. IfI restart the job in the cups interface, it prints. Is there a way to determine, via the command line, if a print job is in the stopped state, or a queue has jobs in this state. Also, is there a way to restart the job if its stopped. Linux Zombie Web Servers

Linked below are details about a new outbreak of hijacked linux web servers that dispense malware. http://blog.unmaskparasites.com/2009/09/11/dynamic-dns-and-botnet-of-zombie… I would highly recommend that you use nmap to scan all your Linux webservers that are connected to the Internet to see if they are listening on port 8080. The best I can tell, there are no articles concerning how these guys installed nginx or what is contained on a machine that has been compromised. But the best way to tell is to see if you are listening on port 8080 (if you are not supposed to be listening there). 8080 is a common port for java apps to be running on, so listening on 8080 is not always necessarily bad. yum issue with extras repo?

Hello All, As you can see below I am having a problem checking for updates. This happens repeatedly. I have to kill the process then rerun. I have tried "yum clean all" but no joy - the process hangs again on "extras" - see second listing below. Suggestions? Supermicro Adaptec AIC-9410 HostRAID controller

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 1) Has anyone been able to get their AIC-9410 controller recognized in CentOS 5.3? I'm working with a Supermicro X7DBR-3 motherboard. It has 2 "ICH Raid Codebase" options in the Bios (Intel and Adaptec); neither of which seem to change Linux's behavior. The interesting part though, choosing either Adaptec or Intel, then performing an 'lspci' always displays "Intel Corp 631xESP/632xESP SATA RAID Controller (rev 09)". I've seen several people post on a variety of mailing lists (typically using older CentOS revisions), but it doesn't appear many were successful. It seems most swap to software raid. 2) When using this internal host raid controller, shouldn't the raided devices appear as a single device like other traditional scsi controllers? Regardless of the raid options I choose, Linux still continues to see both drives (/dev/sda and /dev/sdb). Is this a function of being 'HostRAID'? 3) If you've been able to get it to work, which driver did you use? Thus far, I've tried 2 drivers. 1st driver: adpahci -- Unsuccessful I downloaded it from supermicro's website. ftp.supermicro.com/driver/SATA/Adaptec_ESB2/Linux/Redhat/adpahci.rhel5.i686… After successfully loading the image and inserting the module using kickstart, nothing useful happens, other than several /sys entries added. (NOTE: I had to change the internal cpio archive pathing from `2.6.18-8.el5' to `2.6.18-128.el5'). 2nd driver: aic94xx -- Unsuccessful The driver is built-in via a patch to the Redhat stock kernel. Other than saying that it's loaded, it also does nothing useful outside of /sys entries. Several mailing lists and documents pointed to using the 'attach_HostRAID' option, however, it doesn't exist. Using this option with `insmod' (or modprobe) fails. 3rd driver: adp94xx -- In the works I downloaded this driver from Adaptec's website: http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/speed/sas/linux/adp94xx-1_0_8-12_src_tgz.htm So far, I'm not able to get it to compile because I'm trying to create a patch file so that it incorporates all of the contents of the tarball. Any ideas on where to go from here? I'd really like to avoid software raid. Hello everyone, If create a folder called "whatever" under /var, the context is: root:object_r:var_t /var/whatever/ That's expected as it is under /var. If I then change its type: chcont -t httpd_sys_content_t /var/whatever The context looks like: root:object_r:httpd_sys_content_t /var/whatever/ My question is...Shouldn't a relabeling of the filesystem change the type of this directory back to var_t? I just performed a relabel (/.autorelabel) and the directory stayed with httpd_sys_content_t. I thought that the only way this could happen was if I used "semanage fcontext -a ...." so that a new line would be appended in: /etc/selinux//etc/selinux/targeted/contexts/files/file_contexts.local. Not only that, If I perform "matchpathcon /var/whatever" I still get var_t as its default type. Then again, why it kept the httpd_sys_content_t after the relabel? Thansk in advance, Jorge

mysql query logging

which ldap do you like

To All, I am going to try my hand at setting up an ldap server. I have looked at what is available and would like to ask your opinions as to what is a good one to have. openldap, centos-ds, and freeipa seem to be high on everyone's list. Which one do you like, and does it have a good setup tutorial I could use. So far the tutorials I have looked at seem out of sync with the curent versions of ldap servers. Greg Ennis

I was trying to configure the jukebox by SSHing into it, and I could only perform sound tasks, including running alsamixer and mpd, as root. Comparing to another CentOS box, the jukebox's /dev/dsp was owned by root and the other CentOS box's /dev/dsp was owned by the logged in user. Aha, I figured I needed to be logged in as a user to the physical jukebox machine in order to grant ownership to the soundcard. The jukebox had no user logged into it, as it had just rebooted. A solution, of course, would be to enable autologin on the jukebox. I can't give the technical answer as to why this happens, but just how it happens and how I managed to get it to work. yum repo priority

Hey folks, I'm setting up some kickstart files for our standard configs, and need to install munin-node, which of course does not come from you folks, So I set up the Dag Wieers repository but in the repo file I set it to "disabled" so that it will never get used by mistake. Then when adding munin-node I do : yum --enablerepo=dag -y install munin-node But that pulls in a bunch of dependencies. And I'm not sure where it will pull them from. I know that Dag has basically everything, but I only want to get munin-node from there. How do I ensure this happens? I could do a hack and now that I have a list of dependencies I could precede the above call with another to add those, but keep Dag repo turned off. question on wget

Hello, I've got an ftp site, not mine, that has content on it that i want to download. It's not anonymous so it requires a log in. The problem is either the ISP has a bandwidth throttle or the admin does, in either case inconsistently as to the point in the file, but i rarely get a complete download. I'm using ncftp. I was wondering if either ncftpget or wget could do like an auto get and keep getting more and more until it has the complete file? Thanks. Dave.

Hi, Recently I build a filesystem in a device using mkfs.ext4 but when I tried to mount the device show this error: mount: unknown filesystem type 'ext4' But when I build the same device with mkfs.ext4dev I can mont the device without problem. Creating a personal repo

Hello, I'm wanting to create a yum repo for what is at this point rpm development for personal use, i might eventually open it up but right now i have some rpms i need to debug. I've installed createrepo but the docs i've read indicate that i have to install the base distros rpms, in repos i've seen via a webview they only had packages that they built in the repo. Thanks. mrepo - RHEL5

OK this is talking about downloading from rhn but does anyone have any tips with getting mrepo on a CentOS 5 box to be able to download from rhn reliably? Seemingly everything is configured OK as it downloads a package or 2 but mainly bombs out with... Error communicating with server. The message was: Forbidden avalon-framework-manual-4.1 avalon-framework-manual-4.1 avalon-framework-manual-4.1 rhnget: CommunicationError: Error downloading package avalon-framework-manual-4.1.4-2jpp.13.x86_64.rpm from rhel-x86_64-server-5. Well it uses oracle xe which is in MHO not to bad, the only thing is a really un-clear license agreement. patching from different directory

Howdy, I have a diff file in my /var/tmp and would like to apply patch to a file in a different directory (other than /va/tmp). I tried using patch with -d switch, but that doesn't work. It complains abt 'patch: **** Can't open patch file tilda.diff : No such file or directory'. Do I need to copy my diff file to the directory where original file resides? Or is there any other way round? - CS.

Fork: Resource Temporarily Unavailable

Hey all, I installed a while ago two CentOS 5.3 servers. One of them was running Samba and another OpenLDAP. I configured Samba to act as a PDC on the network and everything was working fine, I was already on policies rules and desktop migrations. One day, another analyst changed our subnet, and the domain was implemented only on our sector for start. After the subnet change, we had a comunication problem and we figured out it that we needed to configure samba as WINS server too. After a while, he changed Proxy requests for WINS to samba, only as a test (some of the requests). Before we could configure samba, BUM, the samba server crashed and after some crash/restart it showed this on boot time (of course when sshd was starting) * /etc/rc3.d/S55sshd: fork: Resource Temporarily Unavailable After that, ALL CentOS installations have this problem after yum update: * /etc/init.d/functions: fork: Resource Temporarily Unavailable I have only one clue: EPEL repository. I installed and configured yum-priorities of course. I´m on my last test installation and I am sending now this e-mail because if it crashes and i have no resolution, they are going to ask me for another distro install, and I like CentOS too much to do that. Just one last thing: its a 6000-7000 user environment and we're on a hurry, so I can't do long time testing or stay with something that may one day crash. Thanks, Gustavo Pastorino
