perl woes - perl-file-Temp conflict

Hi all, everytime I play with perl I end up falling on my face. Yesterday, some new perl modules available from rf (my chosen repo for perl, perl is excluded from my CentOS-Base), however it did not like an already installed perl-File-Temp, so not recalling it was necessary for my mail system I removed it and allowed the updates. Then when I discovered my mail system no longer working (amavisd installed as per centos wiki) I tried to re-install - finally using --force - but now I have two Temp.pm files and the one I need is not found. Why is it that perl has this really messy structure and allows multiple files / methods of the same name, and thus tripping up the unsuspecting. Tracking specific fixes into backports

I apologize if this is a simple noob question - I looked around and couldn't find an easy answer. My auditor presenting me with some findings re: httpd (apache) and said I have to upgrade to the newest version. They are basing their findings on the "version" of Apache installed - but are unaware of the fixlevel. Is there an easy way that I can take a specific Mitre or Securityfocus issue and see if the fix has been backported into the most up to date version of a Centos RPM. While this particular instance is in regards to Apache, I suspect I'll have to do this some more in the future with other RPMs as well. Dealing with backscatter

Hi all, I've had to deal with a sudden surge of backscatter email lately. Would anyone be able to suggest to solutions that worked for them regarding this problem? We are using Scalix 11 as our email platform. It uses Sendmail MTA for those who may not be familiar. Thanks, Matt -- Stand before it and there is no beginning. Follow it and there is no end. potsfix keeping mail in queue on delivery error

Hello, Our mail server is running CentOS 5.3. I configured postfix with maildrop as the MDA. I had to deal with a strange issue : a user sent an email to an alias, which resolves into several internal addresses. One of these addresses had its mbox filled up (reached the mailbox_size_limit); so maildrop reported a 0x19 error code to postfix, who kept the mail in its queue, and repeatedly resent the email : thus every member of the alias list received many copies of this email, except of course the one with the filled mbox. Is there a way to configure postfix so that it does not resend the email to the recipients who do not report any error ? mdadm RAID sync speed limitation?

While creating some arrays this evening, I noticed this line my dmesg: md: using maximum available idle IO bandwidth (but not more than 200000 KB/sec) for reconstruction. Why is there a 200MBps limitation on the mdadm sync speed? It certainly isn't a concern for my particular systems (15k U320 SCSI) but I can imagine there are much higher end systems that actually could sync at a rate equal to or higher than the limit. Is this limit arbitrary? Based on detected system specs? Limitation of mdadm itself? Just curious. --Tim

Help with Intel Driver

Hi People I have a machine with a Intel Corporation 82Q35 Express Integrated Graphics Controller lspci 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82Q35 Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02) The xorg.conf is configured to use the "intel' driver and I need to enable 3D Support with DRI. So my question is, Is this possible with the latest updates in CentOS 5 ? At first I believed that this would just involve enabling DRI so I added two sections to the xorg.conf Section "Module" Load "glx" Load "dri" EndSection Section "DRI" Mode 0666 EndSection Upon restarting X glx and dri appear to load but running the command glxinfo | grep rendering I still get direct rendering: No. Some initial research suggests that the "intel' driver may be 2D only? and that building a newer version of the driver from the Intel site is not a straight forward thing to do. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get the functionality I need going? Or should I just look at replacing this card with something from Nvidia ? Thank you for any insite you can offer. Simple resource manager?

I need to serialize computing job requests for two different multicore machines, and in some near future, for a cluster. I have worked with SGE but it requires NFS and other administrative steps, plus it seems a bit overkill for my needs. SATA DVD Burner / AHCI / CentOS 4.7 (kernel: 2.6.9-78.0.22.EL)

OK, it seems that the kernel I have (stock CentOS 4.7: 2.6.9-78.0.22.EL i686) seems to gronk the nVideo SATA controller in AHCI mode. It is NOT able to deal with the SATA DVD Burner I have. It is a "Sony Optiarc DVD Burner with LightScribe Black SATA Model AD-7241S-0B LightScribe Support". Is there some special magic I need to do? Centos 5.3, no AHCI on HP DL320 G5p?

I have one HP Proliant DL320 G5p, where for some reason, the AHCI mode is not enabled. According to server specs, it should have AHCI/NCQ capability, but ata_piix module gets loaded during bootup, not ahci module. named 'wedging' on CentOS 4.7

For some unfathomable reason, named 'wedges' -- becomes unresponsive and needs to be killed (with -9!) and restarted. I want to install drupal more or less as an experiment, and I'm looking for a 1- or 2-page document that just lists precisely what steps to take. Updating kernel driver module questions

I am running CentOS 4.7, presently on an older box (PIII slot 1 processor @ 500mhz with 384meg of RAM, using SCSI disks with an AHA-2940 host controller). I have built a new box: AMH Semporon 2.<mumble> GHZ, 2gig of RAM. I put in a AHA-29160 host controller (uses same driver as the AHA-2940). The motherboard is an ASROCK thing with nVideo's chipset: nv's SATA controller and nv's integrated network (forcedeth). I just did some tests with live CD and installer CDs for CentOS 4 and 5. It looks like the stock CentOS 4 kernel's achi and forcedth drivers don't really care for this board :-(. I bought a SATA DVD burner for this system -- it looks like I won't be able to use it unless/until I upgrade either the kernel or the whole O/S (eg to at least CentOS 5.3). I really don't want to go an upgrade to CentOS 5 at this time. Do I have any other options? I have the kernel-devel installed -- is it possible to 'steal' the sources for later kernel drivers and re-compile them for the kernel I am running? RAID problem when building new computer

Hi all! I'm building up a new box and plan to use Centos 5 on it. i've got a pair of SATA 320 GB drives to make a RAID1. I'm trying to follow the "howto" on the centos wiki for making a "partitionable RAID" installation. Given that my partition scheme has a separate /boot partition, while the one in the HOWTO apparently does not, I've had to tweak the steps just slightly. But they all succeed without any problems, including watching mdadm create the mirrored pair. however, when I pop out the DVD (booted in rescue mode, per the HOWTO) and reboot, it gets past the GRUB screen and gives me these errors: Mount: could not find filesystem '/dev/root' setuproot: moving /dev failed: no such file or directory setuproot: error mounting /proc: No such file or directory setuproot: error mounting /sys: No such file or directory switchroot: mount failed: No such file or directory Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! I have no idea what these errors mean. I assume they all cascade from whatever failure the first one is trying to inform me of. I don't see "/dev/root" anywhere in any of the config files I changed, per the HOWTO. Self signed certs, openssl dovecot

So, at wits end. Have gone back to plain text for pop3. I set up the ssl as per instructions but I always get a 'chain' error first time trying to receive mail with my mail client. Comes down I believe to the need to get a CA for dovecot's pem files or I will always get an error. Now I am thinking since I am self signing my own mail I should be able to make that intermediate crt file for dovecot....but have no idea the name or process for that one. I am not gonna pay 30 dollars to get a signed cert for my own mail, nor do I want to keep getting that error when my mail client opens up. So...anyone ever do a self signed cert with dovecot and went ssl pop3s? Millions of posts out there but no one has an answer. bummed

I forgot to mention this is an x86_64 machine. Sometime somewhere back several months ago, the centos plus kernel got installed, and I didn't notice it until just recently. It's not in use. I understand there are some i386 packages already installed, and at one point, I thought I had set yum up to only pull down the x8_64 packages, but I suppose something got changed in the yum.repos.d files somewhere along the way. bizarre firefox/X11 problem on centos 5.3

I set up a Centos5 box at work a week or two ago. Today I had this bizarre, repeatable problem: fire up firefox 3.5.1, browse to centos.org, go to the wiki, click the HOWTO button at the top of the page, and either at that point, or a moment later when clicking the link for the RAID documents, KABOOOOMMM!!! X dies and you return to a login prompt. I did it at least three times. Not nice when I have other windows open with unsaved files open. This box has some nvidia card or other, but I've NOT installed the closed nvidia drivers. haven't looked, but I guess that means it's using the nv driver instead. If users will type extensions.polarion.com I want to redirect him to extensions.polarion.com/polarion/extensions However there are following rules that apply 1) extensions.polarion.com is an virtual host alias to community.polarion.com . There is a definition inside virtual host which redirects all / to /polarion using this RedirectMatch permanent ^/$ /polarion/ 2) what I want to achieve is to check if user comes from extensions.polarion.com and If so to redirect him to extensions.polarion.com/polarion/extensions I guess something like : RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} extensions.polarion.com RewriteRule / http://extensions.polarion.com/polarion/extensions/ Is this going to work? I have used the Snort on server for NIDS.It is connected to switch's SPAN port and server ethernet mode is promiscuous and it is analysing all network traffic and alert me all status. But i am searching other alternative for NIDS that it connectable to network area like Snort server.I found some hardware machine such as SonicWall,Barracuda etc.. but at the same time this hardwares are firewall and VPN UTM but only I am looking for NIDS alternative. Hi all, I'm currently searching for a PCI modem that will be used to receive faxes. I've tried out a few modems but they all use conexant chipsets, which need out-of-tree kernel drivers and currently doesn't work here (kernel oops when the installation script modprobes the driver). Setting up Linux File Servers in a University Environment

Hello Everyone I work for a University Department that has a high number of Linux Desktop Users. Currently we provide a users home directory via NFS from a file server. Generally it works well for us, but I have been asked to look at our options for expanding the storage we have available. So I thought one of the first things I had better do is consider are there alternatives to the way we do things now that could be better for us. My initial research suggests that the only real alternative to NFS in this context is ISCSI or perhaps the combination of ISCSI and GFS. So I was wondering has anyone on this list in a similar field implement ISCSI for home directories instead of NFS? And if so would you be able to give me some idea of the costs/ benefits of doing this? Thank you for your time and any insights you are willing to share.

Upgrading CentOS 5.2 to use gcc 4.x

I have a CentOS 5.2 installation with gcc 3.4.6 as the default. I'd like to upgrade the entire gcc tool chain, including libraries, to 4.x in order to build some software that requires 4.1.0 or better. Can I do this easily through yum? If I upgrade to 5.3 will I get gcc 4.x by default? Thanks, Patrick

Limit RAM used by a perl script

I have a perl script which runs from a cron job. How would you limit the amount of RAM that this script is allowed to consume? Is there a ulimit setting that will accomplish this? If so does ulimit have to be run each time the script is run, or is there a way to set it permanently?

script to monitor interface errors

Has anyone knocked up a script to monitor for interface errors before? i know i can look at the interface statistics with ethtool -S but i wonder if anything has something that looks at the last value for this statistic and then can alert if they increase? any thought how to solve this? it has to be host based and cant be on the switch thanks

Hi, I have been trying to install CentOS 5.1, 5.2,and 5.3 and the HP server but to no success. It starts loading well the on trying to load the cciss driver, the machine hangs there and refuses to move on. Any help will help quite alot. Thanks

Using ramdisks on CentOS

I'm running the 2.6 xen kernel on CentOS 5.3. My goal is to use larger-than-normal ramdisks. I can see that the rd module is statically compiled into this kernel, so I tried passing the option ramdisk_size=262144 during boot, but dmesg shows that it gets reset to 16384K. I can also see that this is the size stipulated in the kernel config. Do I have to rebuild the kernel to make this work? If that's the case, can I rebuild it with the new size and still use an initrd? If the answer is no, how do I go about making sure that the drivers I need are compiled into the kernel? I know the most basic steps to building a kernel, but I'm not entirely confident I know what I'm doing here. I've looked for howto's but haven't found anything covering this case yet. Any help is appreciated.

Routing issue - Revisited

A number of weeks ago I had huge help from many of you configuring routing on a server with multiple Internet facing nics. Thanks for all of your help!!!! I am still having a routing issue that I am hoping someone can help me tweek. This server, besides acting as our gateway to the internet, is also our web and email server. The server has 4 nics. Two are connected to the internet and the other two route traffic to internal subnets. Our network topography in question looks like this: Internet - Gateway Server - 192.168.4 subnet - Internal Server - 192.168.6 subnet - Clients The problem that I am experiencing is that part of our internal network, the 192.168.6 subnet cannot view our website that is hosted on our Gateway server. Our Internal Server can access the site but the Clients simply time out looking for it. If I point the Client to the internal address of the Gateway Server I can pull up the site but if I use the URL the browser times out. Recent HPLIP: where's that doc?

Hi, The HPLIP package included in CentOS 5 is one of those packages that lags almost pathologically behind. Now I remember having seen some *official* (HP) documentation describing the procedure to follow to install the *latest* HPLIP on CentOS 5. As far as I can remember, there were even some RHEL5 RPMS on that site. But I can't seem to find that page anymore. Anyone remembers it? Niki Kovacs
