Hi, I have been trying to install CentOS 5.1, 5.2,and 5.3 and the HP server but to no success. It starts loading well the on trying to load the cciss driver, the machine hangs there and refuses to move on. Any help will help quite alot. Thanks

Using ramdisks on CentOS

I'm running the 2.6 xen kernel on CentOS 5.3. My goal is to use larger-than-normal ramdisks. I can see that the rd module is statically compiled into this kernel, so I tried passing the option ramdisk_size=262144 during boot, but dmesg shows that it gets reset to 16384K. I can also see that this is the size stipulated in the kernel config. Do I have to rebuild the kernel to make this work? If that's the case, can I rebuild it with the new size and still use an initrd? If the answer is no, how do I go about making sure that the drivers I need are compiled into the kernel? I know the most basic steps to building a kernel, but I'm not entirely confident I know what I'm doing here. I've looked for howto's but haven't found anything covering this case yet. Any help is appreciated.

Routing issue - Revisited

A number of weeks ago I had huge help from many of you configuring routing on a server with multiple Internet facing nics. Thanks for all of your help!!!! I am still having a routing issue that I am hoping someone can help me tweek. This server, besides acting as our gateway to the internet, is also our web and email server. The server has 4 nics. Two are connected to the internet and the other two route traffic to internal subnets. Our network topography in question looks like this: Internet - Gateway Server - 192.168.4 subnet - Internal Server - 192.168.6 subnet - Clients The problem that I am experiencing is that part of our internal network, the 192.168.6 subnet cannot view our website that is hosted on our Gateway server. Our Internal Server can access the site but the Clients simply time out looking for it. If I point the Client to the internal address of the Gateway Server I can pull up the site but if I use the URL the browser times out. Recent HPLIP: where's that doc?

Hi, The HPLIP package included in CentOS 5 is one of those packages that lags almost pathologically behind. Now I remember having seen some *official* (HP) documentation describing the procedure to follow to install the *latest* HPLIP on CentOS 5. As far as I can remember, there were even some RHEL5 RPMS on that site. But I can't seem to find that page anymore. Anyone remembers it? Niki Kovacs

I'm also under proxy server and yum work like ... charm. You can find manual in http://www.centos.org/docs/4/html/yum/sn-yum-proxy-server.html. kickstart install using url location

Hi, I am working on a kickstart install method and it works fine with cdrom as installation media. I would like change this media to an online resource. I saw option as - 'url --url http://<server>/<dir>'. I am not sure what should be the directory contents? Should we put all ISOs in that directory or what? Any insights? Thanks, CS.

Centos 5 samba with AD integration and XFS with extended ACLs

Hello all, Firstly, I have checked on google, and there are indeed howtos on this subject. Have any of you done this or something similar on CentOS? If so, could you send me the configs maybe? How can I find out if the centos version of samba supports extended ACLs? I ran a modinfo xfs, and XFS supports it. I want to set up a samba server that authenticated to AD. I have that up and running, only the extended ACLs still to do. Thanks in advance, Coert

TwinView (on NVIDIA graphics card)?

Hi, Is anyone here using TwinView with NVIDIA graphics drivers under CentOS 5? Just tried this configuration (I've been using dual monitors as separate X screens in the past), and while it works in a sense, there are a few issue that will probably prevent me from using it for real. Notably, which screen new applications start on (when using the Applications menu or panel launchers) seems to be quite arbitrary. I expect windows to open on whichever screen I initiated their creation, I suppose, but they will often appear on the other one. This is using the GNOME desktop. Another slight issue is with the notification icons. I really want to display duplicates of these, so I can view them on both screens, but is seems like the Notification Area doesn't work this way, i.e. it will never display more than one of each icon even when there are several instances of the area. But this is a problem I also have when using separate X screens. Hi, I'd like to use SSH without password so I can use it in scripts (for example in combination with rsync to do backups). I have Carla Schroder's "Linux Cookbook" and I'm trying out the various receipts, but the one for SSH without a password doesn't work. The book is slightly dated, and I wonder if SSH included in CentOS works differently. Any suggestions? Niki

Hello, I have CentOS 5.2 installed on two of the afore-mentioned blades. I've noticed that the OS started to crash lately (kernel panic) and I've been assigned the task to troubleshoot this issue. I would like to know what is the best way of recovering the kernel dump after the OS crashes. I know there are two software implementations that would enable me to do this, kexec and 'crash' , redhat's own implementation that allows you to pust the dump via network to a remote machine. Glibcxx_3.4.9 not found

Hi, I am running CentOS 5.3. 64 bit version. I have tried updating the OS but every time I run an application I need it reports that Glibcxx_3.4.9 is missing. I tried to do a search for this but cannot find it for my system. When CentOS upgraded to 5.3 I had hoped that the new Glibcxx would have been included but it is not. Is there an easy way to update the OS to include this? You can probably tell from the question that I am a Linux Newbie so please try to keep the answers simple. Many Thanks Chris

NUT problem

A little while ago I changed my UPS to Leibert and installed NUT. Everything worked as expected. Today I tried to use the MultiLink Viewer icon from the desktop, but it simply accepted the root password without apparently doing anything. I can run the viewer directly (as root) from a file manager. The icon is owned by me, but the application is set to run as root. I suspect that the problem is with 'kdesu'. The command 'kdesu /opt/MultiLink/bin/Viewer' which is what the icon runs, brings 'kdesu /opt/MultiLink/bin/Viewer' bash: kdesu /opt/MultiLink/bin/Viewer: No such file or directory From a root terminal, however, /opt/MultiLink/bin/Viewer /opt/MultiLink/jre/bin/java -cp .:/opt/MultiLink/lib/em.jar - Djava.compiler=NONE com.liebert.dpg.app.LxExecutor mainViewer /opt/MultiLink cfg/executor.cfg What changes do I need to make to be able to use the desktop icon again? Anaconda crashing on new machine

Hi! I'm building up a new computer and this evening have had several events during installation in which Anaconda has crashed. It's not clear that there is a lot of commonality between the different crashes. the first time I got all the way through package selection (selecting at the individual package level) before it crashed. the second time I made a mistake in partitioning and did BACK several screens to fix it, then when clicking NEXT several times to go forward to where I had been, it blew up. then it blew up while partitioning. then it blew up there again, though at a different place. I don't think there should be any problem with making /home 200 gigs,... doesn't ext3 have a limit something more like a terabyte or more? it's a gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3 board with an AMD Phenom II X2 550 clocked at 3.1 Ghz, and 4 gigs of g.skill ram (which has run for several hours under memtest86+ with no problems.) Anyone got any helpful suggestions! BTW, I ran 3 different live-Cd distros on it today, for several hours, just looking for problems, and didn't find any, so I'm thinking the hardware is reasonably stable. (one always wonders, when it's all brand-new.) Upgrade 4.7 > 5.3 poorer 'performance'

Hi During a test upgrade of a number of hosts in a pool i have found that exactly the same JVM based app runs more efficiently on the 4.7 systems than it does on the 5.3 on identical hardware. Specifically the apps seems to exhibit about 10% more 'load' on the CPU's for the same workload - before i start digging deep has anyone seen anything similar ? thanks

CentOS, laptop & DLP

I have an old Toshiba Tecra 8100 that I run CentOS on - it's running 5.3 although not completely up to date at the moment. About a year ago, a club I help administer bought a BenQ DLP so we could show movies and do other projector things more easily than lugging around a 27" TV set. It worked just fine, but the behavior of the system with it has changed over the year and I'm curious if anyone might know why. When I first connected the DLP, the laptop (and CentOS) recognized it immediately, and there was absolutely no trouble with it at all. I plugged it in, turned it on, hooked it up, and voila, it worked. Now the laptop doesn't recognize the DLP unless I plug it in either before booting, or reboot after it's plugged in, and I can't play with the <function>-F5 combination (that switches between LCD, DLP, LCD+DLP, no video) until I'm logged in unless I want to be stuck in whichever mode it lands in. I usually set it for both and wait until my login is complete, then I can flip between all the settings just fine. One of the things I really liked about CentOS with this DLP at first was that I did NOT need to reboot for the system to recognize and use the DLP, just like any other hot-plug add-on. I connect it via the external 15-pin video port, same as day 1. Am I missing something, like "be sure the projector is on (or off) when I connect it to the laptop? I think I've tried all possible combinations of this and it just doesn't function at all unless I (re)boot after the DLP is on and connected. The only change I know for certain that happened over this year is that I upgraded from 5.2 to 5.3, but I can't remember if this had anything to do with the change in behavior or not (I don't think so, but it's been over the course of a year...). I asked about 18 months ago if gallery2 was available in any of the CentOS repositories, and it seemed that at that time it was not. However, there was some talk of putting it in epel or epel-testing. But I looked just now, and did not find it there. I actually installed gallery2 on my server by following the instructions at <http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:Preinstaller>. recent rsyslog package available for CentOS?

Hi, I'm looking for a recent version of rsyslog. The yum repositories only show me a version that is 2.0.6. According to the www.rsyslog.com site, they are up to version 5 (dev), which means that I would think/assume that there would at least be v3 or v4 available somewhere. Does anyone know if/where I can find something more recent than 2.0.6? Thanks, Eric

How do I troubleshoot these restarts? I suspected hardware failure (power supply, cooling fans, etc.) but somehow the restarts happen way too periodically, so I have second thoughts on software as well. CentOS 5.3, fully updated. Btw, I don't have physical access to the machine until September, so diagnosing hardware is pretty limited atm. Only remote ssh available. I would really appreciate any advice on this! Hi guys I'm new to the list. There is something I want to ask. I'm running Centos 5.3. Everything works pretty good. I need to set up somescripts to make a dialup conection to a closed network. I'm using the scripts from ppp-2.4.4. Everything id going fine exept for one issue. Remote access server use radius autentication. How can I dial in using ppp-on script and auteticate against the remote radius server? Hope some of you can help. Thanksin advance. David

Firefox 3.5 Issues

I downloaded Firefox 3.5 from the M. Harris site and, for the most part, have had good luck with it. But I have also had hard crashes that take down CentOS, not just Firefox. It happened to me twice on eBay (on the same page) -- and now I can replicate it as many times as I want by going to... http://wiki.centos.org/Newsletter ...and choosing one of the two newsletters, linked there. I'm writing for a couple reasons. I'm curious to see if this is only my problem, or if other have experienced it or can replicate it. And I was also wondering how I can remove Firefox 3.5 and its associated support files and get back to the regular repository. Firefox 3.5, for the most part, is very stable and is snappier than 3.0.11 -- only two sites have pages have crashed for me, but when it crashes it takes down my whole system and that's not good. And, if someone could mention this on the forum (there is a thread about Firefox 3.5) I would appreciate it. I can't log on to the forums. When that interface is disabled on box A and becomes active on box B what should Box B do to correctly update the ARP tables external to box B so the external world knows how to get to the new destination and not the old box A? NIC traffic monitoring, recording and reporting software?

I have a remote CentOS-5.3 installation that shares traffic with another enterprise. I want to record and measure the actual network traffic that comes into and goes out of that host's net i/f on a monthly basis for billing verification purposes. Does CentOS have a software package to accomplish this? I have run across references to a package called vnstat as a possible answer to my requirements, but I cannot seem to locate a CentOS rpm package for it. nfs (v3?) fails to allow writes and permission changes

Hi All, I have an nfs mount from my CentOS 5.3 client to a CentOS5.3 server. This has been functioning correctly for some years. Beginning last week I had problems saving OpenOffice documents onto the nfs mounted volume. OpenOffice just times out with a file io error. So I tried just a simple shell - cd to the mounted volume did a vi create of text file - no problems. tried a chmod +w on an owned file - returned okay but no change to the permissions when checked with ls -l tried sudo chmod +w on the same file and get [rkampen@robsws p_494]$ sudo chmod +w 5887_cover.pdf Password: chmod: changing permissions of `5887_cover.pdf': Operation not permitted yet using gnome file browser I can change permissions on these nfs mounted files just fine - go figure. This did work in the past - so what has changed? how do I check what version of nfs is actually working? Initial backup prior to daily rsync backups

I have a few CentOS 5.3 servers out at remote sites that connect over a satellite link (a painfully slow satellite link). There's a time period in the wee hours of the morning when the satellite provider doesn't stiff me for bandwidth, and when the link is generally idle, where I want to use rsync to back up files to my local server. I've got rsync working in in combination with cron and ssh, and that process works fine. The problem is getting the initial copy of the files over to the local server so that rsync can just deal with files changed during the day (there tend to not be too many changes -- mostly office-type documents, few pictures, that sort of thing, so limited bandwidth is not a problem). If I run rsync now, however, it is trying to copy over all the files since none exist on the local servers, and by my calculations copying that 160gb worth of data should be done some time in mid-February, 2010. I can make the 4-hour round trip out to the remote site with a USB hard drive and copy the files that way, but my concern is how to get the file structure, timestamps, permissions, etc copied exactly from the remote server > USB drive > local server so that rsync can run most efficiently (and not have to do a compare on every single file the first time it runs.) So the question is, how do I copy the files from the remote server back to my local server in a way that will allow rsync, once the copy is complete, to start dealing just with the daily changes in the most efficient way possible? If you use Git instead of Redmine for your large file store then each user gets a complete repository the first time that they pull (clone actually) from the remote, including all the source changes to initialisation. Thereafter they only get the diff objects. Git uses a very efficient storage mech. that basically only passes compressed diffs of file contents. It uses MD5 hashes of file contents to identify change sets so that if you rename a file or merge two into one it can track these events and avoid duplicate storage. I use a cron scheduled git pull over ssh to maintain a remote copy of our base repository and the traffic created is negligible even after large commits. If the Git repository containing those files is bound to your Redmine project then you can search the files therein through Redmine and compare diffs across multiple versions. I asked a collegue of mine (who happens to have physical access to the machine) to shut it down and get into the BIOS to check for the "wake on lan" status. He did (it was off) and he left the machine hanging in BIOS for an hour waiting to see if it would restart. It didn't, for two hours. He was also monitoring temerature and voltage and comparing them with two other machines in the room (identical hardware) and nothing seemed out of ordinary. Then he rebooted to CentOS, and since then restarts have not happened for a whole day now: # uptime 16:26:25 up 22:11, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00 That means that (a) the problem went away and (b) I am not able to reproduce it. From the logs I read that the resets were happening every 3625 +- 10 seconds, so to speak. The idea of intentionally skewing the system clock and wait for a reaction was my next step, but since it stopped restarting I cannot verify anything now. Since the problem went away, I am moderately happy, so we can drop the thread, and I'll make sure to reopen it if I see it restarting again. Thanks to all for suggestions and help! Best, :-) Marko

Keep lossing wireless - ipw3945

Sunday I updated my kernel to 128.1.16 (I had to reboot so it was time to update). No problems with wireless in my home. Monday I started traveling to IEEE 802 plenary, and I have lost my wireless numerous times needing to reboot. The symptom is the radio light goes off. Back before the kernel update, this would happen sometimes at home while on battery, and I would just press the capacitor sensor and turn it back on, and I would get my signal back. But so far this week, this has not worked. Nothing. No signal is gotten after turning the radio back on (for whatever reason this system decides to turn it off). I have tried restarting the network and NetworkManager and this has not helped (this use to help in the past when I saw this behaviour). I really cannot deal with frequent rebooting. Can someone point me in a direction to fix this?

CentOS/SNMP update breaks MRTG?

I got itchy fingers over the weekend and decided to fix what wasn't broken and upgraded one of the older servers from Centos 5.2 to Centos 5.3. Following the recommended process of updating glibc and such before the rest, it appeared to work perfectly and rebooted without problem. However, MRTG 2.15.2 started complaining about unexpected values. I installed/updated both MRTG (2.16.2) and net-snmp to the latest available in hope of fixing it. Subsequently, MRTG stopped working altogether. I've spent the whole weekend and whole Monday morning trying to fix it and thus far have only finally managed to get garbage values showing up in MRTG again as opposed to nothing. And this required learning about SNMP and adding many additional lines to the original MRTG configuration file, none of which I had to do previously. Did anybody else have similar experiences with MRTG failing after the update and what was the simple fix? It does not make any sense that I have to jump through so much hoops to get just the default functionality back. Thus I believe there must be one small thing I'm overlooking. Thanks for any advice.

Hey guys, I've done a ton of googling, searching and asking in the forums, etc, and I haven't found a way to do this... :) I'm trying to find a way of having some type of screen saver at the login screen so that if I leave a machine not logged into, it won't burn-in the screen. Does anyone know of a way to achieve this? In specific, I'd love to have it simply blank the screen and leave the screen on, just black after maybe 5 minutes of inactivity at the login screen. :) Thanks in advance, it's really appreciated! :) Dave

OT: Web "Project" type software

Sorry for the OT... I'm looking for some software to fill a fairly specific set of requirements. I'm not necessarily looking for project software, but it seems like the closest to match what I need. I'm also not tied into open source or free. If anyone knows of any software that might fill these requirements I would appreciate it. Here's what I'm looking for: 1) Web enabled application 2) File storage - need to stare a large amount of large cad files - be able to categorize file storage (not one large list) - keep different revisions of files with some kind of notes - be able to search files (at least include names in a search) 3) Task - assign and keep track of tasks (searchable) 4) Store meeting notes and minutes (searchable) 5) Would like to support LDAP 6) Extension on file storage - since we'll be storing a large files and many of our users are across a WAN we'd like to sync/mirror the files to a few different servers. I'm not sure how we'd control how the users get the "closest" server but.... I found dotproject on sourceforge. It fills some of the needs, but it's file storage appears to be one large list, doesn't appear to support LDAP, and I don't see much for searching. Anyone know of software that might do these things? Hi all, I have a 3G AM2 quad core CPU... x86_64 centos 5.3 When I am doing backing up to my external USB drive my system becomes sluggish. Clicking on a thunderbird compose takes some time to pop up the window. Typeing doesnt keep up etc... Is there something I can change so this backup doesnt slow my system down so much? I dont see HOW it can be taking so much CPU. top at times shows 0 idle or 11% idle from a USB backup. Thanks for any suggestions. Jerry

CPU utils almost 100%

Dear All, I have been using the following for along time but recently i noticed the following Centos 5.2 squid stable 2.6 clamav + havp i do have MRTG running which monitors CPU + bandwith usage of my squid proxy server i notced recently that the cpu utilization peaks to abt 100 % at 4 am every day and becomes normall at 10 am cpu 4.5%us 2.3% sy 0.0%ni 2% id 95% wa notice the 95% wa the only thing that i added was i have a cron job running clamscan at 4 am but initally it was workin without any problem when i run top it show so when i noticed this high cpu utilization i removed the clamscan entry from my crontab file so as to diable it but the problem still persists i wanted to disble all the daily crontab jobs but i jus wanted to know which process could be actually causing this appreciate your advice and help regards fabian -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.
