How to change Disk sequence on DELL R900 CENTOS 5.3?

we have DELL R900 with CENTOS 5.3 in it. This DELL R900 come with one integrate PERC6/I and two PERC6/E card. DELL 6/I control 5 internal disks. The original disk sequence are: /dev/sda1 /boot /dev/sda2 / /dev/sdb1 swap ... after I configured PERC6/E disks and reboot, /dev/sda change to RAID disk and original /boot and / change to /dev/sde1 and /dev/sde2. My modprobe.conf is: alias scsi_hostadapter megaraid_sas alias scsi_hostadapter1 ata_piix alias eth0 bnx2 alias eth0.1998 bnx2 alias eth1 bnx2 how to change sequence back? Iptables issues again

I know that I have asked this before of the list. However we just changed ISP and ip's and I'm having this issue again. Question about optimal filesystem with many small files.

Hi, I have a program that writes lots of files to a directory tree (around 15 Million fo files), and a node can have up to 400000 files (and I don't have any way to split this ammount in smaller ones). As the number of files grows, my application gets slower and slower (the app is works something like a cache for another app and I can't redesign the way it distributes files into disk due to the other app requirements). The filesystem I use is ext3 with teh following options enabled: Filesystem features: has_journal resize_inode dir_index filetype needs_recovery sparse_super large_file Is there any way to improve performance in ext3? Would you suggest another FS for this situation (this is a prodution server, so I need a stable one) ? raid 1 disks upgrade

Hello all, I have a machine with 2 SATA 250GB disks which I want to upgrade to 1TB SATAs This is the partition structure on both disks: Disk /dev/sda: 250.0 GB, 250059350016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 * 1 25 200781 fd Linux raid autodetect /dev/sda2 26 1971 15631245 fd Linux raid autodetect /dev/sda3 1972 30401 228363975 fd Linux raid autodetect there are 3x RAID1 arrays. First is for /boot Second if for swap Third is for LVM (contains / and other filesystems) What is the easiest way to get this upgraded? I thought that I could maybe dd all the LVM volumes and /boot into files, setup the new RAID1 arrays on the 1TB disks, and dd everything back? or is there an easier way? Regards, Coert

sFTP (client) RPM for CentOS 5.3 (32 bit) and/or putty-tools

I installed gFTP but apparently it does not handle the sFTP protocol. I also installed the FireFTP Add On for the Firefox browser, but when I tried to connect to the server, it says that I need putty-tools. I have the rpmforge and epel repositories configured but yum did not find putty-tools. Is there an RPM for a client program for gFTP or putty-tools? If so, in which repository? I am not sure this is the proper forum for this question, feel free to redirect me if you like to the correct place. I have the following setup: vmware esxi 2 CentOS 5.3 servers (vmware virtual hosts) these 2 servers are running conga(luci, ricci) and the rest of the cluster suite with a simple IP address setup to failover for testing. My problem comes in when I need to setup fencing for the vmware servers. I have downloaded the fence_vmware_ng agent, and can manually fence using it on the command line. How can I add this agent to the conga or even the system-config-cluster interface for use in the agent list dropdown? If I add the fencing configuration to the cluster.conf manually, conga does not see it, and system-config-cluster refuses to load the configuration file, and says it is invalid... Update Issue

I come to you "hat in hand" again. For the first time in a long while I got a "Update Notification" at the bottom of my screen -- so I decided to click on it and run the update. Unfortunately I got a couple dependency errors and am not sure how to solve them. (Not even sure why I got them.) They are as follows: Missing Dependency: libavcodec.so.51 is needed by package transcode-1.0.5-1.el5.rf.i386 (installed) Missing Dependency: libx264.so.55 is needed by package transcode-1.0.5-1.el5.rf.i386 (installed) The only non-CentOS repositories I have enabled are Adobe and RPMForge. (I have, however, downloaded files individually from PBone.) This is the first time I have had any problems for a while. Have I broken something? (I did find libavcodec.so.51 at PBone, but it won't install because it wants the libx264.so.55, which I haven't been able to find.) Is transcode what I use to convert CDs to MP3 files? I did recently add MP3 codecs to Juicer, so I could convert my CD collection. And I did try to update via yum after running 'yum clean all' and I got the same dependency issues. Regarding LARGE number of files in a folder in linux

This goes out to you admins who manage servers with a heavy load of information. I would like to know what you do about the number of files in a folder, or if that is a concern. I think there is a limitation or a slow down if it gets to big, but what is optimal (if necessary) Example- running a website that allows a user to upload some photos (small ones). You get lets say 300,000 users each uploading 10 photos. That's 3 million files. Storing that in one folder would seem like it would cause an issue when using that folder, is that right? If it does, what do you do about that? How do you handle things? If you have 300,000 clients you could give them their own folder each and then the folders would have only 10 photos, but one folder would contain 300,000 folders. SO what is best for file management and system resources? -Thanks Bob

LDAP/Autofs instructions are conflicting in Centos5.3

Hi, I'm not sure if I am posting this in the right place, so if this belongs more on another list, please let me know. I am trying to get Autofs configured to use LDAP on CentOS5.3, but am running into an inconsitency. On CentOS5.3, the openldap server is installed with an extra schema/redhat/autofs.schema file. From what I can tell, that schema file seems to follow RFC2307bis. In the schema, it uses cn and ou. However, in all docs I can find for RHEL5, everything indicates that I should be using automountMapName and automountKey as the Map attribute and the Entry Attribute. I am very confused. Which is the "right" one to use? If I follow the RHEL docs and tell autofs to use MAP_ATTRIBUTE as automountMapName, then I can't use the schema that is distributed with CentOS5.3. Should I be using the schema that is distributed with the CentOS openLdap package, or is there another one that I should be using instead? Thanks, Eric

Hello: I have been looking into projects that will automatically restrict hacking attempts on my servers running CentOS 5. I think the two top contenders are: DenyHosts - http://denyhosts.sourceforge.net Fail2ban - http://www.fail2ban.org >From what I see, DenyHosts only blocks based on failed SSH attempts whereas Fail2ban blocks failed attempts for other access as well. The main benefit I see from DenyHosts is their synchronization service where my servers can proactively block hosts recognized by other users of their service. Does anyone have experience with these tools and have recommendations? Hi, I have again worked on yum 3.2.8 for Centos 4 today, after a long time. The result is backported package yum-3.2.8-9.el4.hrb.2.1.5 which is the upgrade of yum-3.2.8-9.el4.hrb.2.1.3 I've been using smoothly for quite a long time. Packages are in testing repos: http://fs12.vsb.cz/hrb33/el4/hrb/testing/i386/repodata/ http://fs12.vsb.cz/hrb33/el4/hrb/testing/x86_64/repodata/ I'd like to ask for QA tests. Add instantly active local user accounts *with* password using useradd -p option ?

Hi, I need to setup a load of user accounts on a series of machines, for testing purposes. I'm using a script to do this, but the only problem I have so far: I have to activate them all manually by doing passwd user1, passwd user2, passwd user3, etcetera. The useradd man page mentions a -p option to define a password, but I can't seem to get this to work. Here's what I'd like to be able to do: # useradd -c "Gaston Lagaffe" -p abc123 -m glagaffe And put that line in a script, so the account is *instantly* activated. I tried it, but to no avail. Looks like there's some burning loop I have to jump through first :o) No security considerations here for the moment, since it's for testing. Any idea how this works? Niki

Window Server 2003 will not run as paravirtualized?

Hello: According to the Red Hat Virtualization Guide, Windows Server 2003 32-bit will only run as a fully virtualized guest on an AMD64 system. I thought I have seen a lot of discussion about running paravirtualized Windows on CentOS. Is that a bad idea? Hello, Tried yum update all yesterday and today and seems there is a perl dependency missing. Does anyone know if it is a problem or just a sync thing and that I should be more patient. Flash Drive problem?

I've been having an odd problem lately. When I drag files from the computer to a flash drive, they appear to copy, but when I try to use the files I find that only the name was copied (file size of 0). When I copy the same files to the same flash drive, from the terminal, everything seems to work. Has anyone else experienced a problem like this? Hi, What's the correct way to disble TSO (TCP Segmentation Offload) in RHEL5? I have tried adding those options in ifcfg-ethX configuration file: # grep ETHTOOL /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 ETHTOOL_OPTS="tso off" And also with: ETHTOOL_OPTS="-K eth0 tso off" But when restating the server TSO is enabled: # ethtool -k eth0 tcp segmentation offload: on As a temporary solution, I'm executing this command in a start script: /sbin/ethtool -K eth0 tso off But I think it can be configured in network configuration files, any idea to solve this? thanks!! Getting started with NFS

Hi, I've never been using NFS before, but I'm going to need it. I gathered some documentation (Deployment Guide, RHEL 5 Unleashed, general NFS docs) and I have a few machines to experiment with. After about two hours of reading and experimenting, I must admit the documentation is confusing, to say the least. Although some step-by-step tutorials are provided, none of them work. For example, the RHEL deployment guide mentions NFSv2, NFSv3 and NFSv4... but as much as I poke around, I don't even find a way to checkout which one of the version I'm running. So... 1) Can you suggest some reliable and well-written (think: newbie-friendly) documentation about NFS? 2) Usually I start out from a minimal install on desktop as well as servers. Which packages are needed on the servers side, and on the client side, in order for NFS to work correctly? None of the docs mentioned above says a word about it. Thanks, Niki

md0 mounted rw on boot

Hi folks, I updates one of my long-running CentOS 4.x systems today, and afterwards it wouldn't boot properly. My issue was that it would start, then announce: Checking root filesystem /dev/md0 is mounted. e2fsck cannot continue. After much twiddling around, I discovered that if I booted from the first kernel I had, it would boot properly. Now this is a hand-rolled RAID, not an anaconda-generated one. And I seem to recall generating an initrd myself in order for the boot process to work. Does this mean that I have to generate a new initrd every time I want to boot to a new kernel? For the record, this kernel failed: title CentOS (2.6.9-78.0.22.EL) root (hd0,0) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.9-78.0.22.EL ro quiet root=/dev/md0 initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.9-78.0.22.EL.img ...while this one succeeded: title CentOS-4 i386 (2.6.9-34.EL) root (hd0,0) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.9-34.EL ro root=/dev/md0 initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.9-34.EL.img And there are several other kernels on the system, but I honestly don't know which ones have been run successfully. server fails reboot - GRUB

Hi All, Just wondering if anyone else has experienced a reboot problem. I have a intel motherboard based server of late 2004 vintage with 2 by 160GB SATA drives running linux software raid 1 with boot partition and /. The server was running 2.6.18-128.1.10 and had uptime of approx 40 days. I did a yum update and reboot yesterday and after the POST the screen showed GRUB From memory this indicates that the mbr is corrupt and grub cannot find the required files on /boot/grub (the first partition). I did a linux rescue from DVD which sets the HW raid 5 as /dev/sda and the two OS drives as sdb and sdc then ran grub and did grub> root(hd1,1) # designates that the root is to be found on the second partition of the second drive grub> setup(hd1) #writes the mbr onto the second drive (/dev/sdb) grub> root(hd2,1) # designates that the root is to be found on the second partition of the third drive grub> setup(hd2) #writes the mbr onto the third drive (/dev/sdc) grub> quit reboot ALL was well. Question is, what has happened in the last 40 days to the mbr(s)?? Not sure where to start looking. Any thoughts Thanks Rob

Does there exist a GUI Front End for OpenLDAP admin for CentOS 5 (RHEL 5)? The binary (i386) rpm for directory_adminstrator works just fine with CentOS 4, but does't install under CentOS 5 and the src RPM does not build (I hacked the spec file and did install the build deps, but it is using an old hack for finding libgnome (/usr/lib/gnomeConf.sh or something like that). Permission problem

Hi, I have to solve an apparently simple permission problem, and I don't know if it's the sunny weather or birdsong, well... I just can't figure it out. Here goes. I have a bunch of users in a public library. Some are "administrators": they handle the library, write the docs for everyone, etc. Then you have the "agents", who take care of lending books and fetch them when they get returned. And then you have the odd anonymous user, using the PC with a guest account. Let's make thing simple and start out with one machine. Every single user has a /home/<user> directory. Plus, I added the following directories: /home/pub and /home/echange Then, I created two groups, "administrators" and "agents". Here's what I'd like to achieve (but I think my IQ is just below the required limit :oD): 1) Members of the "administrators" group have unlimited read/write access to /home/pub and below. 2) Members of the "agents" group have read-only access to /home/pub and below. 3) All the others (that is, members of neither "administrators" and "agents") have no access at all to /home/pub, not even for listing the directory content. The thing is: I can't seem to formulate my problem in terms of user/group/others, as there are no owners, but two distinct groups involved. Any idea how to crack that nut? Niki

Formatting print with awk and ORS

I have a command I execute: awk 'BEGIN { ORS=" " } { print "\"" $1 "\"" }' input_file which gives me exactly what I need, all field one's in quotes on one line each separated by one space. I now need to print a single quote around all of this, but the ORS flag is screwing me up, it's causing every attempt I try to repeat for every record. Anyone got a pointer how to do this? Init checking for processes that are configured to "respawn"

Hi folks, I have a sophisticated question for which I can't find any hints on the web: If you configure init (via /etc/inittab) to respawn processes (like the getty processes) when they exit - how often does init check for the existence of such a process? Does it check actively at all or does it rely on some kind of inter process communication? I am not a programmer, so maybe the second question is completely nonsense. Any hint or help is appreciated. When I do a free, I get: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 18482800 18030668 452132 0 683068 9426792 -/+ buffers/cache: 7920808 10561992 But, when I do a ps, mysql is the only process that takes noticable memory; and it is far from 7.9GBs... Howdy, The yum install <package> hangs in between. This happened few days as well, but just after doing Ctrl+C it reported error with mirror and switched to another one. Today, however, it is not responding to Ctrl+C and kill or kill -9 command is also not working. Any clues? Thanks, CS.

Trouble running 'alsamixer' as normal user on headless box with minimal system

Hi, I just transformed an old Pentium III 500 into a headless jukebox. It's installed in the basement, near the stereo. There's only a base CentOS system on it (GNOME unchecked, package customization checked and then everything unchecked). From there on, I just installed the ALSA utils, and vorbis-tools. The machine is only supposed to do one thing (and to do it well, UNIX philosophy :oD): fetch an audio stream (produced by MPD/Icecast upstairs on a big PC) and then output it from the soundcard to the AUX IN from the stereo. I have a partial - and near-total - success, in that everything runs fine... as root user. Upgrading drives in raid 1

I think I have solved my issue and would like some input from anyone who has done this for pitfalls, errors, or if I am just wrong. Centos 5.x, software raid, 250gb drives. 2 drives in mirror, one spare. All same size. 2 devices in the mirror, one boot (about 100MB), one that fills the rest of disk and contains LVM partitions. I was thinking of taking out the spare and adding a 500gb drive. I would run this " sfdisk -d /dev/sda | sfdisk /dev/sdc " (drive 'a' setup is cloned onto drive c) Then I would add drive c to the raid array as the spare. I would then pull out drive b and allow drive c to be synced with a. At this point drive c has 250gb worth of partioned space in raid/lvm. I then add a 500gb drive b and repeat above pulling out drive a. Now I have two 500gb drives (b and c) with 250gb worth of partitions mirrored. I am thinking I would next forget about md0 (the boot part) and concentrate on the md1, where the whole system lies. # mdadm --grow /dev/md1 --size=max I believe this will grow out the size of md1 to fill the 500gb of the drive. I would then wrestle with expanding the LVMs that fill the md1 up as I wish. After that, I would add drive 'a' 500gb to the mix by cloning the partitions and then adding as a spare. So...does this sound like the way to upgrade from 250gb to 500gb drives on a raid 1 software raid? Or, is it back to the drawing board?
