How best to allow users to change Samba passwords?

I was wondering if anyone could advise me on this. I've got two Samba servers, each using passdb.tdb for authentication. All works well, but I've now been asked to let users change their own passwords (a requirement of data secuity). What's the best way of arranging this, preferably updating both servers at the same time? thanks

ffmpeg and zoneminder install problems

CentOs zoneminder users, I have been trying to install zoneminder on Centos 5.3 (2.6.18-128.1.16.el5xen) and have hit a brick wall with ffmpeg which zoneminder has as a dependancy. There were no rpm's in centos or rpmforge so I have followed the instructions on the zoneminder website for a CentOs install. I have posted a note on the zoneminder list, but have not been able to get any takers to assist me. I am not a C programer so I have a lack of understanding as to how to proceed. I have followed the steps outlined on zoneminder site as to how to install on Centos 5.3 http://www.zoneminder.com/wiki/index.php/CentOS The sequence step I have not been able to pass beyond with these instructions is the following : svn checkout -r 11879 svn://svn.mplayerhq.hu/ffmpeg/trunk ffmpeg cd ffmpeg/ ./configure make When I execute the make command I get the following that results in an Error message. I noticed that some of you have been able to use zoneminder on Centos 5.3, Can you help me get zoneminder installed. Hi all, I am trying to rebuild RHELIPA packages downloaded from ftp.redhat.com. All goes ok except from python-psycopg2 package. Building Custom Kernel - CentOS 4.4

Hi All, I am having issue when trying to build a custom kernel in CentOS 4.4. Current Kernel Version is 2.6.9-42.ELsmp and the server is HP Proliant DL380 G3. I downloaded the source rpm and then installed it. Gave the command, rpmbuild -bp --target=i686 /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/kernel-2.6.spec. But it throws me an error after patch operations. software raid1 syncing

hello all, I have a setup that is raid 1 and put the mirrored drive back in and now it is still showing as degraded saying: raid1: raid set md6 active with 1 out of 2 mirrors with this message on all the raids.i know i am wrong by saying this but i thought putting in the driving and rebooting would start the re syncing itself. what do i have to do to add this back in, i am so confused with this process. centos 4.x

What exactly does the announcement mean to the CentOS community? >From what point in the past to what point present/future should the user community be concerned? Once you find the final culprit, how sure will you be whether any issue is/was malicious vs benign? Do you perform regular server checksums to compare what _might_ have changed (i.e. tripwire, etc)? What is the level and mitigation of damage control - current and future? What additional specifics can we learn from you - from safe/tainted media checksum files to ISO media itself? From keeping machines up and running to needing a fresh install? Could the same thing happen, or did it, with the upstream provider, or is it limited to the CentOS community? Thank you. Scott

Multiple Internet facing Nics - Gateway issue

I have a server with 4 nics. Two are using different internet connections, both with static IP's, and two are connected to our private network. The two internet facing nics seem to be battling over the gateway designation. Which ever I designate as the gateway the other stops responding to incoming traffic. I need both to listen to inbound traffic. One for our main web page and the other for another web server. I found some information of Iproute2 but that did not seem to solve my issues. Replicate desktop configuration for other users using /etc/skel

Hi, The subject says it all. I'd like to copy my own custom desktop configuration for other users on the machine without having to go manually through the hassle. Here's a non-exhaustive list of what I usually tweak : * Theme + icons * background image * panel * screensaver * Nautilus behaviour * Handling of removable devices * Gnome Terminal * Gnome Dictionary (french servers) * GEdit options And so on... I used to do this before, a few years ago, when I was a Slackware user, but only with KDE (or XFCE on older hardware). Usually it boiled down to copy the relevant hidden directory trees (.kde/ or .config) to /etc/skel before creating new users. Would something similar work with GNOME? And if so, what are the relevant hidden configuration directories to copy over? Cheers, Niki

new RAID5 array: 3x500GB with XFS

Hello all, I have yesterday after some typos, sent my ext3 RAID5 array to the void... I want to recreate it now, but I read on http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Disk_Optimization that you can optimize the filesystem on top of the RAID. Will this wiki article be exactly the same for XFS? Is it worth the trouble to also create an LVM volume on the RAID array? Regards, Coert

Remote identity management

Hi, Until now, I've only managed local user management on small network with no more than five or six machines, e. g. all user data stored locally on each and every machine (/etc/passwd, /etc/shadow, /etc/group). Now I'd like to learn remote identity management, that is, all user data stored centrally on one machine (so I don't have to wonder who has which UID and GID when I want to setup an NFS share, for example). I understand there are several ways to achieve that with RHEL/CentOS: NIS, LDAP, Kerberos, SMB, ... The networks I'll have to deal with are 100% GNU/Linux (better: 100% CentOS). So my first question is: which solution is the "best" for such a configuration ? By "best" I mean some compromise between "easy" and "reliable". Any suggestions ? Niki Kovacs

It is not working. IMHO, since you (like me) have both rpmforge and epel configured, you should give epel a very low priority or epel will replace a *LOT* of the packages on your box. Also, I suggest you disable the protecbase plug in. Priorities is newer and more powerful.

Thank you for your answer. change adapter sequence on /etc/modprobe.conf and rebuild image always my first try. Unfortunately it does NOT work on DELL R900. The reason is DELL R900 internal RAID and external RAID use same driver. I have KomPozer installed, but after using M$ FrontPage for years, KomPozer looks like it is going to have a learning curve and I want to get away from FrontPage and Windows. I know Mark (MHR) uses SeaMonkey. Wondering if there is anything else I can use on Linux that is easier on a FrontPage user. Hello - It's been sooooo long since I've tried hacking the kickstart media to include an updated driver but I guess that time has come again for me at least, getting an updated "igb" driver into the CentOS 5.2 installation for a HP DL165G5p(I'm not ready yet for CentOS 5.3). Anyways, I had a pretty basic question, I added a bunch of entries into the pci.ids file that were not there previously that came with the newer driver, including: 10a7 82575EB Gigabit Network Connection 10a9 82575EB Gigabit Backplane Connection 10c9 82576 Gigabit Network Connection 10d6 82575GB Gigabit Network Connection 10e6 82576 Gigabit Network Connection 10e7 82576 Gigabit Network Connection 10e8 82576 Gigabit Network Connection 150a 82576NS Gigabit Network Connection This particular network chipset is a "10c9" When looking at the module-info file for the igb driver I see: igb eth "Intel 82575EB Gigabit Network/Backplane Connection" Which does not match the description for 10c9 which is "82575EB Gigabit Backplane Connection", the closest match I can find in the pci.ids file is: 10a7 82575EB Gigabit Network Connection Do I need to change the module-info so it recognizes the 10c9 driver as matching igb? I believe I inserted the driver correctly into the modules file though the installer doesn't detect the NIC right away, it takes me to the driver selection screen which I choose igb and tell it to load, then it tells me no driver found... BUT If I hit ALT-F4 I see the correct driver loading and it shows eth0/eth1 is there. screen shot: http://portal.aphroland.org/~aphro/driver.png However despite that the installer refuses to continue. This is the first driver I've inserted that had different descriptions for the various devices/pci IDs, so I suspect this may be the issue. server is always getting hacked

WE have a centos 5.3 install, and our server is keep getting hacked. We see load averages of 500+ and see people from all over the world logging into our server (used last). Is there a good place to start to avoid these kinds of things? For example, here is what I already did. Open up sshd port only setup iptables to only accept port 80 and 22 No FTP No other ports are allowed according to IP Tables. I am not sure what else measures I can take. Can someone please assist? I didn't use LVM for / and /boot during the installtion Could I extend easily in the future the /var partition when I add another disk? Hi, The subject says it all. On my "server" machine in the local LAN (192.168.1.252 in a 192.168.1.0/24 network), I setup Bind. I installed the 'caching-nameserver' package, which provides a set of configuration files for Bind so it can be used as a caching nameserver out of the box. On the server : I start bind (service named start), and try it out. # host www.google.fr 127.0.0.1 Using domain server: Name: 127.0.0.1 Address: 127.0.0.1#53 Aliases: www.google.fr is an alias for www.google.com. www.google.com is an alias for www.l.google.com. www.l.google.com has address 209.85.227.99 www.l.google.com has address 209.85.227.103 www.l.google.com has address 209.85.227.104 www.l.google.com has address 209.85.227.147 Which tells me basically that my DNS server works. Now I'd like all the other machines on the network to use this local DNS server instead of my ISP's DNS. First thing, I know Bind uses port 53, so I take care to open that port on the server as well as on the other machines in the network. Then, I try to use my local DNS server manually on one of the machines, but I only get this : $ host www.google.fr 192.168.1.252 ;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached Since I'm rather new to Bind, this leaves me a bit clueless. I'm currently busy reading "DNS & Bind" from O'Reilly, but this 750 page book is ideal for blocking my terrace door on windy days, and the problem is not absence, but wealth of information. I have implemented LDAP on CentOS successfully using Redhat's Directory Server and the great how-to on the CentOS wiki. Being new to LDAP, I have a question and maybe one of you guys can point me in the right direction: I have LDAP implemented on the network for logins to the workstation pcs. I also have an apache website that I now use LDAP for authentication. What I want, however, is to be able to allow a group of users to authenticate to the apache website, but not be able to login to any of the systems directly nor via ssh. Any suggestions or pointers in the right direction on where to read up on how to accomplish this specific task would be much appreciated. Thanks, Giovanni

lost CentOS repositories from yum

Hi, I was using yum, which was working very well. Then I decided to try yumex, and installed yumex, which again worked fine. But, after that, when I came back to use console yum, it started giving error messages. So, I removed yumex and tried, in vain. Then I removed yum, and installed it with rpmforge repository. It works fine, but I only have rpmforge repository. How can I add CentOS repositories like Addons, Extras, etc back to my yum? Thanks

Maybe I should have did it, but then the SPEC is incomplete and it assumes that whatever version is OK when it's not. I'll check this in a couple of days. OTOH, frankly, I should rather find some time (which I don't have) to fscking build my own VLC and MPlayer and gstreamer-* so I won't need RPMforge in the future. Frankly, I hate huge repos. Yes, even Debian's. Whatever is huge can't be maintained with the current mindset of the FLOSS people. When you build audacious from SPEC + tarball, it spits out audacious + audacious_plugins, both as RPMs and as SRPMs (actually, it spits around 15 plugins RPMs). RPMforge misses the plugins, that's all. Probably just triggering a rebuild would fix it all. Instead of talking for ages about patches, what builds and what doesn't, and why "better services" would need pay etc. maybe someone (Dag?) could have triggered the rebuild of audacious for 100 times in the meantime. Thank you for answer. I change /etc/fstab and using UUID instead of LABEL. after reboot, UUID did NOT change disk sequence back to what I want. [OT] Batch Job Scheduler/Manager

Hi. Looking for suggestions/ideas. I have pretty loose requirements at this point, but I am looking for a tool (or set of tools) where I can automate and control a large group of tasks by a basic web front end. I have a series of scripts that do various conversions of data or media, as well as analysis and I want to be able check their status, see if they completed or if they failed. Then possibly react or setup alternate jobs if they passed or failed, etc. - some basic logic. I want to avoid building something for this. But if there already exists a tool(s) that I could tailor that would be good too. Something Perl would be perfect, but PHP could be made to work. Free or not would be acceptable. Thanks for any ideas. -Mauriat

Fortran90 and 77 on CentOS

Hi all, Is anybody here using Fortran90 and Fortran77 on their CentOS-machine(s)? If so, did you get that from a repo or something? One of our PhD-students needs a software that requires the Fortran compilers mentioned in order to make the sources for our i7-machines. The Fortran stuff that is available to me is from the standard CentOS repos, as well as Rpmforge and EPEL repos, from which I got gcc43-fortran and some more dependencies and and such. But as far as I can tell, this is not going to work. This is all new territory to me, to have to compile stuff... Please let me know if this is off-topic and should be taken elsewhere. Basically, I have been answered that I cannot ask for consistency for something that's free unless I help fixing the issues. Fair enough. But then, if mentioning that KB's repo for EL5 is still having *everything* in testing (the repo for EL4 is not in testing, and it even wasn't in testing a few years ago when I was using it) is still an attack... ...whereas KB's *offending* and *despising* answer (because *this* is how he usually replies!) basically says that I am an idiot who shouldn't use his repo (only that he wasn't using these exact words, so he's technically "politically correct" in the way he's telling people that they're morons that should shut the fsck up) is not an attack, huh? Well, then raise a statue to the beloved KB, because I'm gonna shut the fuck up. This is not a community, and I know of several people who use ScientificLinux not because it's better, but because on their mailing list, their developers *don't* imply that people are morons when they spit an answer to the list. But now, you're right: should I have the chance to meet KB in person, I'd punch him in the face with an infinite pleasure.
