RPM python subroutine for (epoch, version, release) comparation?

Hi, all, On Centos 5 I am programming RPM with python recently. When I read the online RPM python programming guide at http://docs.fedoraproject.org/drafts/rpm-guide-en/ch16s05.html, I got confused at the EVR() function as the function returns the (epoch, version, release) as a string “%epoch-%version-%release”, and so the RPM comparing process is simplified as string comparing – which doesn’t look correct, am I wrong? CentOS 5.3; x11 lost keyboard

Howdy, I have an IBM thinkpad with it's "standard" monitor and keyboard. It's been connected to a larger monitor and usb keyboard and usb mouse. The xorg.conf is a dual head config. This has been working for a few weeks now but has started failing. During boot and subsequent login the keyboard and mouse (gpm started) and display (larger monitor) work fine. When I startx, the keyboard becomes "dead to the world". NO signals are sent from the keyboard as far as I can tell. I had just configured VNC server and made it start at boot time when this problem appeared. I am sadly in need of hints/tips/suggestions as to how to trouble shoot this problem. Thanks, George... Hey guys, Looking through my book and the web and I am not having any success returning data from a search. I need to have awk search for a string and print the first field which is no problem but now its returning two options as the input data has changed. The change is reliable, I only want the first field if it ends in a regex that I have, and I only want what that regex matches to be printed. Is it possible to do this in a one liner so I don't need to construct an awk script? I suppose I could pipe it into grep and cut but that's not very sexy :) Any ideas? Thanks! jlc

setup VLAN without primary LAN?

we would like setup VLAN on CENTOS 5.X and 4.x. Only VLAN will active, but primary LAN NOT active. E.g "eth0" inactive, but "eth0.2" active. I have been tried several ways, but never successful. Unexplained reboots in DRBD82 + OCFS2 setup

We're trying to setup a dual-primary DRBD environment, with a shared disk with either OCFS2 or GFS. The environment is a Centos 5.3 with DRBD82 (but also tried with DRBD83 from testing) . Setting up a single primary disk and running bonnie++ on it works. Setting up a dual-primary disk, only mounting it on one node (ext3) and running bonnie++ works When setting up ocfs2 on the /dev/drbd0 disk and mounting it on both nodes, basic functionality seems in place but usually less than 5-10 minutes after I start bonnie++ as a test on one of the nodes , both nodes power cycle with no errors in the logfiles, just a crash. When at the console at the time of crash it looks like a disk IO (you can type , but actions happen) block happens then a reboot, no panics, no oops , nothing. ( sysctl panic values set to timeouts etc ) Setting up a dual-primary disk , with ocfs2 only mounting it on one node and starting bonnie++ causes only that node to crash. On DRBD level I get the following error when that node dissapears drbd0: PingAck did not arrive in time. drbd0: peer( Primary -> Unknown ) conn( Connected -> NetworkFailure ) pdsk(UpToDate -> DUnknown ) drbd0: asender terminated drbd0: Terminating asender thread That however is an expected error because of the reboot. At first I assumed OCFS2 to be the root of this problem ..so I moved forward and setup an ISCSI target on a 3rd node, and used that device with the same OCFS2 setup. There no crashes occured and bonnie++ flawlessly completed it test run. So my attention went back to the combination of DRBD and OCFS I tried both DRBD 8.2 drbd82-8.2.6-1.el5.centos kmod-drbd82-8.2.6-2 and the 83 variant from Centos Testing At first I was trying with the ocfs2 1.4.1-1.el5.i386.rpm verson but upgrading to 1.4.2-1.el5.i386.rpm didn't change the behaviour Anyone has an idea on this ? How can we get more debug info from OCFS2 , apart from heartbeat tracing which doesn't learn me nothing yet .. in order to potentially file a valuable bug report. thnx in advance Kris

The guys [3] at LinuxTag want to share some of the stuff they have been doing today. After setting up the booth [1] we started the usual socializing by doing this, we met Brian Schueler again who created a PowerPC 32 version of CentOS and even a ARMv5. This is quite impressive and we all gathered around to see a little demonstration. Further we talked to the usual suspects from Fedora and Red Hat which was represented quite strongly this year. Nothing special about the booth [2] this time we have an iMac on display on which we are showing some information about CentOS. Then we went on dismantling a thinkpad to see how it looked on the inside and some members of the team visited some talks. We are now off to the pub for some food and German Beer. Missing php* packages

Hello, I am trying to migrate one of our fedora-based servers to CentOS. Our PHP developers doesn't allow us to switch because there are no crucial (for them) php packages: php-smarty php-adodb php-accelerator It is not acceptable for us to download sources and compile them and repeat the process each time there is a security bug. Can you recommend any repository which will deliver all the above packages (and many others) ? I tried gallery v2 but it was too complicated to use(and hated the themes it came with I just wanted something plain), I just wanted something simple. I like it because there's no requirement for SQL and you can basically upload the original images straight from the camera to a directory tree. PHPix2 then lets the user view pictures in a variety of resolutions, with forward/previous thumbnails, album descriptions, etc. It's easy to maintain backup copies because it's just a regular directory tree. Use 8GB RAM on Pentium D?

Hello: I have a Supermicro SuperServer 5015P-TR. It has a Pentium D and is running CentOS x86_64. Can this machine use 8GB RAM? I think it should because it is running a 64 bit OS, but I am concerned because it is fundamentally 32 bit hardware. Anyone have any experience in this area? how to yum install after deleting some files?

Hello, all. I have deleted some files for mistake. So I would like to re-install those files using yum install. But if I execute yum install some_package, that doesn't work, because some files are remain, I guess. So is there any yum install option to re-install forcely when some files are deleted? Should I remove all related files first to re-install using yum? Compile driver for new kernel rpm

Hi All, My question is directed at those with kernel compiling experience. I have a driver source xxxxx.c file and a Makefile with it. I want to recompile the kernel to include the driver and rebuild the initrd.img. Where do I copy the file in the kernel sources? I currently have it in a sub folder of the drivers directory in the kernel source folder. There is one more question if I may, it does not have a xxxx.h (header file) do I need it? The driver does compile perfectly without it. But I am not sure if I need to compile it into the kernel? How do I change passwords / remove users for Samba?

I've got a bit of a problem with Samba. I just can't work out how to change passwords or remove users. I've just got user security.. lines in smb.conf are: security = user passdb backend = tdbsam I've removed the user using pdbedit, I've removed the unix user, smbpasswd says the user doesn't exist yet I can still connect to the shares. I'm obviously just missing something here. Can anyone point me in the right direction? thanks

RHEL, centos and seeing if i now understand this

ok, given the flurry of responses to my original post, let me see if i have a handle on this as i think i've finally figured it out and, yes, it does make sense. the scenario is that there is a very large software company in the area whose only officially supported linux platform is currently suse. however, they are getting increasing call to have their product run on red hat. for most of their clients (who are fairly sizable) who will want official support, RHEL will be the obvious choice and the software company will advertise that RHEL is what they support. the SW company will be happy, the clients will be happy, and red hat will be happy. on the other hand, if there is the occasional client who is perhaps not as large, or doesn't have a budget for RHEL, centos will be the obvious option if they're prepared to do their own support. that scenario will, i'm guessing, not be that common so red hat has nothing to worry about it in terms of cutting into their revenue stream in any significant way. and, finally, for any client that chooses centos, that will represent a possible support contract for independent linux consultants. sound about right? rday -- ======================================================================== Robert P. rpm -qa not displaying sources

Hi All, I must have missed something here. I installed my kernel source using rpm -ivh kernel-`uname -r`.el5.src.rpm it installs perfectly, without error, but if I cd to the /usr/src/redhat folder, all I get is SOURCES and SPECS... rpm -qa | grep kernel doesn't return the kernel source rpm I installed only the kernel, devel and headers. I'd recommend using the beta of Gallery3 instead - it will be upgradable to the final version, and -3 is so much nicer to work with than -2. Actually, I've stayed on -1 simply because -2 was way too complex. You won't get it through yum, but you can update using git instead of having to download and untar new versions. BR Bent

Slow CentOS VM when running off the network

I have a CentOS 5.3 VM running under VMware on a WIndows XP laptop. Everything works fine when connected to the network. However, removed from the network, most everything in the CentOS VM takes minutes to complete. For instance, starting a new Terminal window takes over 3 minutes. I did an strace, and there are a couple of long waits when trying to open a socket (/tmp/.ICE-unix/XXXXX for instance). The host and the VM can ping each other fine, but any access to the VM (either external or from within) eventually succeeds, but it takes a long time. First, I thought I'd reduce the default socket timeout (which I believe is set to around 90 seconds), but I can't find where to do that on a system wide level. But I really need to figure out what is causing the problem in the first place. I'm assuming the network is somehow misconfigured, but I don't know how. Alfred

problem with centos 5.3 upgrade

Hi All, I'm running CentOS 5.3 x86, and recently my yum update isn't running as it should. It pops up with sub conflict messages for i386 packages, which I don't need - even though yum is downloading them. Due to this sub conflict messages, I'm not able to update/install my x86 packages, as the installation stops at the error message. Anybody, any idea how to come over this issue ? And installation is very, very simple. upload the files to your websever, add a MySQL database, and run the installation.php script - very easy. Till now I've done the galleries manually from Adobe Photoshop Elements, but I feel that is a dead end, kinda', besides the fact that the galleries created are rather static. I'd like an easier way to do this, eg uploading images in folders directly to the gallery and it will take care of what needs to be done automagically, like resizing etc. So far I've come across a project called Gallery2, that seems to do what I want. Downside is that no rpm-packages are available with yum with this one. What web photo gallery software do you guys use? My requirements are only that the software should be simple to install, maintain and add more photos. I'm not a pro (a newbie more like it...) when it comes to mysql and php, so this needs to be easy to do as well, from the gallery standpoint. oVirt on CentOS 5.3?

Hi, Has anyone been succesful in installing oVirt on CentOS 5.3? While it looks like a greate virtualization package, they only support FC10, and the installation instructions are for FC9. So, has anyone installed it on CentOS yet? Make sshd log IP addresses, not hostnames

Can I adjust the ssh daemon to log IP addresses instead of hostnames? I assume this situation is feasible... * 10.10.10.10 attempts to ssh to the server * reverse dns resolves to "somehost.domain.com" * ssh daemon logs "somehost.domain.com" in messages * foward dns on "somehost.domain.com" resolves to 10.10.10.20 Thus it causes some of my scripts a problem if the DNS resolutions don't match. It would be nice if it could just log IP addresses only. Thanks, Scott

Program to ban sniffers

So I have been reading the ssh attack thread and finally want to ask about something. I doubt there is a program like this, but I would love to have a program that listens at common ports that I do not use at all...and only allow that program to listen to it, especially the usual ssh port (using a different one for real ssh)... That program would then, upon receiving a 'sniff' or 'user' would then add that ip to the deny hosts lists..for either a long or short time. Using this would seem like a win as you can easily grab someone before they can get somewhere one hopes. Also, by opening up a few other ports that are unusual like 8561....well, if someone sniffs that it could be a 3 day ban or a month... In other words, anyone hitting those ports that are not being used at all except by our sniff protector, would allow instant banning. So...does something like this exist?

Need to rebuild installation CD

Hi All, I would be lying if I said I am a newbie, but I am rusty so please bear with me. I am looking for a how-to for Redhat or Centos to remake the installation CD. First let me explain: I have an installation disc supplied to me, with centos 5.2 which has kickstart, post and pre installation scripts which run. The problem we have is that the CD does not support our CDROM (it8213). I have managed to compile the driver from the sources, and I have a boot stiffy. So I have managed to load the server, the problem is that we need to load about 10 of these server every week and the Linux guru (me) is not always able to drop his work and load servers. I need to implement the driver on the installation CD so that the kickstart file is read and run Is there a way to hack around this problem? Can anyone guide me through this process or give me a work around please. Filesystem backup?

Hi all. I'm currently having a following problem: I have only ssh connection to a CentOS 5.2 system, there are two harddiscs on it. One stores the system (/ filesystem) and the other should be used to help restore the system in case of first disks' failure. I thought that maybe dump would be a good utility to make it. But in only works on read-only filesystems. In one article I've read that making a snapshot of the / filesystem (then it wouldbe read-only) and backing it could help. But aren't snapshots limited to logical volumes (LVM)? My friend told me to use rsync to back up the entire / filesystem to the second disk and then in case o failure the system from the copy should boot ok. Could anyone provide any suggestions? I don't have physical contact with the machine so for example RAID 1 isn't a possible option/ Any help will be very kindly appreciated. With regards, R.

Wifi connection finally solved

After a year or so of trying to get wifi-cards of various brands and chipsets to work, today it finally happened! I got my 3com 3CRPAG175 to jump to it and connect to the department WPA2 AP! I wouldn't have done it without your help. Thanks all! Dear All, I have recently upgraded mu centos 5 final to centos 5.3 using yum update i have the following setup which was running on centos 5 old server is centos os 5 now centos 3 with all the utilitlies Mailscanner 4.6 clam av 0.92 + spam assassin 3.1 mailwatch 1.04 after running yum server upgraded to centos 5.3 and download and installed latest mail scanner and clamav+ spam assassin centos 5.3 mailscanner 4.77 latest clamav+SA jules package now i see that system works fine but when i try run startx after loggin in the display jus hangs n system freezes only i can hard reset it i tried to see the /var/logs/Xorg.0.log but no much information when i run system config display my display card is detected n it works fine apprecite if someone can advice n help regards fabian -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

I'm a bit confused about how to compile somethingon Centos 5 that's looking for gtk +-2. ./configure errors out with this message: checking for GTK+ - version >= 2.4.0... no *** Could not run GTK+ test program, checking why... *** The test program failed to compile or link. See the file config.log for the *** exact error that occured. This usually means GTK+ is incorrectly installed. configure: error: Cannot find GTK2 The best information I could find on Google tells me this: "Edit the script file , it is looking for gtk+-2 while you have gtk2 installed." That's nice, but how? I edited the "configure" script and changed all references to read gtk2 and that did me no good at all.
