Filesystem backup?

Hi all. I'm currently having a following problem: I have only ssh connection to a CentOS 5.2 system, there are two harddiscs on it. One stores the system (/ filesystem) and the other should be used to help restore the system in case of first disks' failure. I thought that maybe dump would be a good utility to make it. But in only works on read-only filesystems. In one article I've read that making a snapshot of the / filesystem (then it wouldbe read-only) and backing it could help. But aren't snapshots limited to logical volumes (LVM)? My friend told me to use rsync to back up the entire / filesystem to the second disk and then in case o failure the system from the copy should boot ok. Could anyone provide any suggestions? I don't have physical contact with the machine so for example RAID 1 isn't a possible option/ Any help will be very kindly appreciated. With regards, R.

Wifi connection finally solved

After a year or so of trying to get wifi-cards of various brands and chipsets to work, today it finally happened! I got my 3com 3CRPAG175 to jump to it and connect to the department WPA2 AP! I wouldn't have done it without your help. Thanks all! startx problem

Dear All, I have recently upgraded mu centos 5 final to centos 5.3 using yum update i have the following setup which was running on centos 5 old server is centos os 5 now centos 3 with all the utilitlies Mailscanner 4.6 clam av 0.92 + spam assassin 3.1 mailwatch 1.04 after running yum server upgraded to centos 5.3 and download and installed latest mail scanner and clamav+ spam assassin centos 5.3 mailscanner 4.77 latest clamav+SA jules package now i see that system works fine but when i try run startx after loggin in the display jus hangs n system freezes only i can hard reset it i tried to see the /var/logs/Xorg.0.log but no much information when i run system config display my display card is detected n it works fine apprecite if someone can advice n help regards fabian -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

gtk+-2 and centos 5

I'm a bit confused about how to compile somethingon Centos 5 that's looking for gtk +-2. ./configure errors out with this message: checking for GTK+ - version >= 2.4.0... no *** Could not run GTK+ test program, checking why... *** The test program failed to compile or link. See the file config.log for the *** exact error that occured. This usually means GTK+ is incorrectly installed. configure: error: Cannot find GTK2 The best information I could find on Google tells me this: "Edit the script file , it is looking for gtk+-2 while you have gtk2 installed." That's nice, but how? I edited the "configure" script and changed all references to read gtk2 and that did me no good at all. Postfix question: How to reject email with a certain subject header

Hello everyone, Occasionally I get emails which have a subject header of "Rejected posting to Blah", from a listserv I am on. Without going into a 10 page diatribe of why, I'd like to reject these automatically, sending them to /dev/null. I used to run Sendmail and that was pretty easy to do. How can I do this under Postfix under CentOS 5.3? Any help is appreciated. Thanks! usb issue on my motherboard

I have found this http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10913 I am running that motherboard with 2.6.18-128.1.10 x86_64 and I have the USB issues. I dont really want to use a later kernel for a couple reasons one being the ATI Catalyst drivers dont work on later kernels (I tried on another machine). Is there a way to take 2.6.30 (just since its the current version)usb/host directory and compile it as a module for the 2.6.18-128.1.10 kernel and just replace the ehci_hcd driver? I extraced the 2.6.30 kernel, and was hoping to just cd drivers/usb/host and make. It says no tarkets found. How can I do that? THanks, I just want to compile the module. Jerry

Time to sync (NOT a complaint)

Is anyone else seeing this situation? I subscribe to the announce digest, and for the last four or five announcements that contained updates to CentOS 5, I've been unable to get a successful run of yum update for as much as 24 hours after the announcement. The last time around, I tried at about 5 hours after the posting, and yum couldn't see anything. I ran yum clean all, and yum update still couldn't see anything. In general, if I wait a day, the updates load just fine, but that just feels wrong. I do have the fastestmirror plugin installed (and priorities). Thanks. mhr

One of my servers crashed, need help

Hello all, I just installed a new beta kernel from Dzickus over at redhat. Rebooting causes this, no matter what kernel I boot from: EXT3-fs error: device dm-0: ext3_check_descriptors: Block bitmap for group 5008 not in group (block 167772160)! EXT3-fs: group dexcriptors corrupted! Mount: error mounting /dev/root on /sysroot as ext3: Invalid argument Setuproot: /moving /dev failed: no such file or directory And a bunch of other mounting errors. OK, so, I have a Centos 5.2 install disk, but what can I do to get everything back? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks! Which external WiFi device for laptop running CentOS 5.3?

Have decided to give up on the embedded Broadcom 4312 wireless device in my son's Dell laptop. I get WEP open authentication to work, but nothing else. I was about to dump the bcm43xx kernel module and the bcm43xx-microcode5.fw firmware and work with the newer b43 module and associated firmware. However, he claims that at school, he has always had intermittent problems with wireless under Vista and wants an external device (USB or PCMCIA). So...if you had a clean slate, which make & model would you buy for mindlessly easy installation and use under CentOS 5.3? Dave

yum update bug with disk requirement calculation?

I just updated my machine from CentOS 5.2 to 5.3 and noticed an oddity. The update required around 280Mb of disk space. I had over 500Mb of free space on root. And... the update failed with "need more space" errors. Now I can understand this; normally it would fetch the files from a http server, so the worst-case requirements are double (or more) than the download size reported by yum. EXCEPT these files were being served from an NFS server, and so were never copied local to the machine. Eventually I manually installed a few smaller packages and managed to get the space test passed. During the transaction I monitored free disk space in another window, and it never went below 300Mb free. Bizarre. -- rgds Stephen

CentOS comes with all of the platform components you might need for running such an app, but the app itself is not there. nate

Other than coding something yourself...does Cent OS come with any kind of portal application(s) that would allow remote users to purchase a domain name through me or log in and edit their domains settings and go active in my DNS? Has anyone set anything like this up before using Cent OS? The closest thing I can think of is a Register.com, GoDaddy.com, or Load.com type interface that customers can do it all from one HUD-type interface. I realize that some minor html and branding that would need to take place to give it that corporate look likely. Thanks. Larry Kemp

Hey Guys n Gals; I have some arrays that I can't seem to expand correctly (if that's the correct word?), imagine the following example: #!/bin/bash myArray=("First" "Second" "Third") First=("Monday" "Tuesdays" "Wednesday") Second=("One" "Two" "Three") Third=("A" "B" "C") for ((i=0;i<${#myArray[@]};i++)) do for ((k=0;k<${#${myArray[$i]}[@]};k++)) # < Things go bad here! do echo "${${myArray[$i]}[$k]}" # I understand this line is won't work but it doesn't matter right now done done So ultimatly we shall loop round each value in the myArray array and print out the values in each array which has the same name as the value in the myArray, array. Where I have marked with a comment, the script stops with the error- : bad substitution I have looked on-line but I don't quite understand how I can correct this? I have seen other people have this error for other problems but not one like mine so I don't fully understand it? Can anyone explain to me exactly what is going wrong and how I might correct it? suggestions for installing CentOS 5 via USB?

I'm having problems installing CentOS via a USB drive. First, I tried using Unetbootin, but with no avail. The 8MB netinstall doesn't work, and the big DVD image doesn't work either. http://lubi.sourceforge.net/unetbootin.html Then I tried this http://www.pendrivelinux.com/usb-centos-5-live-install-via-windows/ with a CentOS DVD file, and that did not work (just hangs). I tried to use the live cd, but then found out that I cannot install the OS with the live cd (like you can with Ubuntu). NAS Storage server question

Hello all, At our office a have a server running 3 Xen domains. Mail server, etc. I want to make this setup more redundant. There are a few howtos on the combination of Xen, DRBD, and heartbeat. That is probably the best way. Another option I am looking at is a piece of shared storage, a machine running CentOS with a large software RAID 5 array. What is the best means of sharing the storage? I would really like to use a combination of an iSCSI target server, and GFS or OCFS. But the iSCSI target server in the CentOS repos is a 'technology preview' Have any of you used the iSCSI target server in a production environment yet? Is NFS and option? PERC6 driver on CENTOS 5.3

We have DELL R900 server with PERC6/i and PERC 6/E in it. O.S. is CENTOS 5.3. I download latest PERC 6 driver from DELL site and tried to installed it. I have error messages said : Module version 00.00.03.21 for megaraid_sas.ko is not newer than what is already found in kernel 2.6.18-128.1.10.el5 (00.00.04.01-RH1). Does CENTOS 5.3 come with PERC6 driver? I knew in CENTOS 4.X PERC 5 or PERC6 driver is not include. intel nic vanished with 5.3

Hi I have boxes with a quad card that shows up with e1000 e1000_probe: Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Connection However since rebuilding a box from 4.7 to 5.3 this card has vanished - I would have thought this card is pretty generic so i dont believe there are not drivers for it - Any other thoughts? It does not show up at all in messages etc, and ethtool knows nothing of it either. thanks

Hello, I tried to make an automatic install bootable CD, with a kickstart file. I use this command to create my CD : sudo mkisofs -v -r -T -b isolinux/isolinux.bin -c isolinux/boot.cat -J -o InstallCD.iso -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -hide-rr-moved . I copied all the contents of the CD #1, on a InstallCD dir, on copied my ks.cfg file into the isolinux directory. CIFS Issue When Copying Large/Many Files From CentOS To Remote Windows 2003 Server Share

My first post to the list, hope the community can help me, I am having a problem with CIFS:VFS. I am trying to write large files (and a lot of files) from my Cent OS 5.3 server to a remote Windows 2003 Server share. It appears there might be some incompatibilities between how the two OS's individually implement CIFS, maybe. I automount the remote share via /etc/fstab and have the /mnt/remotewinservershare built. Everything is setup and seems to work properly but during the large file transfer (at intermittent times) the Linux Kernel seems to panic and the CIFS connection seems to fail as a result since CIFS happens at the Kernel level, returning errors. Although when I cd the /mnt/remotewinservershare dir, or ls /mnt the mount is there is I can manually cp to it with absolutely no problems. My /etc/fstab line is: //10.100.101.205/share /mnt/remotewinservershare cifs username=MYUSER,pass=MYPASSWD 0 0 The CIFS errors returned are: WARNING: Kernel Errors Present CIFS VFS: Error -4 sending data ...: 103 Time(s) CIFS VFS: Unexpected lookup error -112 ...: 2 Time(s) CIFS VFS: Error -4 sending data ...: 380 Time(s) I have seen in various online forums people have run into this since 2004 and posts in 2007 have gone unanswered. Seems to be isolated to Cent OS trying to CIFS to a Windows 2003 Server when transferring large or many files (and does so intermittently). Has anyone has hit this before and been able to fix this please share how you worked around it or fixed it. It is important for me to be able to have a stable CIFS connection to this remote Windows Server 2003 server, and we know we are not getting a look at the Windows kernel. Big Thanks LK

Another Postfix (or procmail ??) question

Is there a simple way to strip out what I assume is a header that asks for a receipt that the message was delivered? I never like to send such receipts, and they are annoying. It mostly happens on a couple lists I'm on (not this one) - I don't just want it for myself, I may be setting up a list soon and if soon, would want to strip such requests out of the message before the list server sends it to the list.

Hello I have this problem: I make my own php rpms, base on src.rpm from CentOS but with my patches (more options included). I have built it on my machine originally but now I want make it in mock environment. I solved almost everything but Firebird support for 64bit arch. Original RPM from http://www.firebirdsql.org/ are made with amd64 arch but my php is x86_64. And I don't know how to solve it. .src.rpm for FirebirdSS and/or FirebirdCS is on available. I have this section in .spec %if %{with_interbase} %package interbase Group: Development/Languages Prereq: php = %{version}-%{release}, perl Summary: A Sybase/MSSQL database module for PHP. Rsync, SSH and authorized_keys problem

Hi, I'm trying to backup from one machine to the other (automatically via cron) using rsync and ssh password-less public key authentication. I having been trying to set this up following an article in a Linux magazine[1] by only allowing the specific rsync command to run on the remote box. I am using the following rsync command: $ rsync -avz -e "ssh -i ~/.ssh/backup-key" /backup stewart@name.of.remote.server:/backup This runs, connects using keys asking for no password and completes successfully until I add the above command to my authorized_keys file on the remote box: command="rsync -avz -e "ssh -i ~/.ssh/backup-key" /backup stewart@name.of.remote.server:/backup" ssh-dss ... key ... The client then says it cannot find the key, so the connection fails. Is it because it's trying to find the private key in the ~/.ssh directory on the remote box? Is the article wrong? Anyone here familiar with Cyrus IMAP and its util ipurge? We'd like to set auto deletion of our users' spambox folders, but I'm a bit paranoid about its functionality. The main things that confuse me are from the man page: "Ipurge deletes messages from the mailbox(es) specified by mailbox-pattern" with no indication as to what defines "mailbox-pattern" Second: "Ipurge by default only deletes mail below shared folders, which means that mails in mail- box(es) below INBOX.* and user.* stay untouched. Use the option -f to also delete mail in mailbox(es) below these folders." What's a "shared folder"? OK, so the format of a Junk mail folder is: user/spiro/Junk(a)knossos.net.nz and I've successfully done: $ ipurge -f -d 90 user/spiro/Junk(a)knossos.net.nz Working on user/spiro/Junk(a)knossos.net.nz... total messages 21 total bytes 187742 Deleted messages 16 Deleted bytes 138324 Remaining messages 5 Remaining bytes 49418 however, without the -f, it did nothing, even though I was explicitly supplying a folder. Clearly I misunderstand what the man page is trying to tell me. I'd like to set up a proper "pattern" to purge all spamboxes correctly via the cyrus.conf, because at the moment, I've got an awk script that generates a list of email addresses and produces a list in the format of user/userid/Junk@domain. I could then go over that list and run an ipurge for each one, but if anything happens that causes that list to be corrupted, I'm afraid of deleting the wrong mail. or worse. :( according to what I've gathered, the line: purgespam cmd="ipurge -f -d 90 user/%/Junk@*" at=0430 should work when put in cyrus.conf's Events section, but I can't confirm these wildcards. Some results on google just refer to * for the mailbox name, but none seem to include the domain as part of the string. I have been looking at the security advisories provided here: http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos-announce/ It appears that there is not a 1:1 correlation between advisories listed here and advisories listed by Red Hat: https://rhn.redhat.com/errata Is there a specific reason for this? In actual practice you may seldom see any issues with this, but the error messages will appear for some users trying to access different things.... Also, if you have stuff like logwatch or other system things going to a local mail make sure spamassassin or procmail rules are updated to deal with the change in localhost.localdomain so they are not junked. Always make sure the normal things you are used to are still happening or being received after you change the hostname....many things can be affected, slightly or more, when doing it. Nothing usually server breaking. This should do you well

Hi, I would like to spend some time learning a new coding language, but specifically for server side admin stuff, i.e. setting up users / databases / FTP accounts / virtual domains on Apache, etc. I already know PHP, but realize it's not quite suited for this kind of admin, and I suppose I need to look @ PERL / Python / C++ / Ruby? / others? Can someone give me some pointers on this?
