Bind krb5kdc only to eth1 and not also to ppp0

How can I force krb5kdc to bind *only* to my local address 192.168.0.1 (eth1) and not to bind also to the current ip of ppp0? Thank you! regards Olaf

Tired of "little problems" trying to keep 7 drives working in an old desktop computer, I'm considering an external SATA drive enclosure with a controller card based on the Sil3124. http://www.ipcdirect.net/servlet/Detail?no=152 I'm a bit concerned about long-term support, namely that the company's driver page only lists drivers through RedHat 4. http://www.siliconimage.com/support/searchresults.aspx?pid=27&cat=3 Does anybody else have experience with this controller? Hi all, I have this tabletpc one of my bosses insisted on buying. The machine runs Windows Vista TabletPC Edition. As it happens I have a thousand and one problems with this POS operating system... I think the hardware is fine though, so it's not that. Would any of you guys know of some kind of linux-based alternative, preferrably available on or for CentOS, that can do the same hand-writing-on-screen-tricks as Vista Tablet does? yum --allow-downgrade and versionlocking not working

with installed version 1.3.7 from rpmforge yum --allow-downgrade update rrdtool-1.2.30-1.el5.rf results in "no packages to update" yum --allow-downgrade install rrdtool-1.2.30-1.el5.rf says "already installed" So, how am I supposed to use --allow-downgrade then? I had to rpm -e --nodeps the newer packages to be able to install the older packages. Now I want to lock the package version. However, again, yum doesn't work as I read from documentation. After adding rrdtool-1.2.30-1.el5.rf perl-rrdtool-1.2.30-1.el5.rf to versionlock.list I get: Error: Package tuple ('rrdtool', 'i386', '0', '1.3.7', '1.el5.rf') could not be found in packagesack where I can't find any fix for. Interestingly, I'm also getting this error on a simple "yum update", that I haven't seen before: Error: Package tuple ('perl-DBD-mysql', 'i386', '0', '4.011', '1.el5.rf') could not be found in packagesack This package was removed quite some time ago the same way because downgrading didn't work. (This package wrongly obsoletes a base package.) What's going on here? Even yum clean all doesn't help. munin stopped working

Just noticed that my munin installation stopped showing any data after the last "big" update. I installed a lot of updates for CentoS, but there was also a munin update coming from rpmforge. However, in yum.log there is no munin listed. But I'm sure I updated munin to 1.2.5-2.el5.rf as well. Does yum log only the centos repo's? The problem seems to be with the creation of the graphs. When running munin-cron manually I get this output: No fonts found; this probably means that the fontconfig library is not correctly configured. You may need to edit the fonts.conf configuration file. More information about fontconfig can be found in the fontconfig(3) manual page and on http://fontconfig.org I don't know at all what I should do. I am rsyncing and remotely doing some work based on a logfile from a windows box from a centos backup server. To make my script work without rewriting it, is there a sed method to only take the "SNAPSHOT ID" if the text indented beneath it has "D:", then do the same and extract "SNAPSHOT ID" if and only if "E:" follows? Automounter (?) failing in CentOS 5.3

I may have asked about this before, but I can't find any records of so doing in my saved mail (which includes almost everything I ever read or write): All of a sudden, I am not getting flash drives automatically mounted in CentOS 5.3 with GNOME - they are recognized by the hardware, but there seems to be a (new?) problem with the maps. (However, I cannot mount it, or the other flash drives that also have worked flawlessly for months, with gnome-mount, which used to work as long as the device was visible. I can look at the partition tables on all three drives with fdisk -l, but no automount to /media/<whatever>.) How do I fix this? Thanks mhr

Things that fail over time (was Automounter (?) failing in CentOS 5.3)

I'm starting a new thread on this because there are other failures I'd like to bring up, not _necessarily_ directly related to CentOS, but they all happen to me here. FTR: Linux mhrichter 2.6.18-128.1.10.el5 #1 SMP Thu May 7 10:35:59 EDT 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux (AMD 64x2 7750, 2.7GHz, 2GB memory, 900+GB disk, etc.) I had a meeting to go to last night, so before I left, I rebooted. When I returned, as I expected, my USB flash drives were all properly recognized (i.e., the default behavior worked). I have a number of scripts and aliases that "depend" on certain flash drive cognizance, but they all depend on indeirect references, so by changing, eg., my symlink to my "main" flash drive, everything that "depends" on it works just fine. Of course, after the reboot, I had to restore the original symlink, but I digress. This particular failure might not actually have been time related, although it seems like it because once it "began" to fail, it always failed. I tried all my USB ports, moved some connections around, and only the flash drives continued to fail - my printers were fine (I had to reset the hardware connection values in System->Administration->Printers, but that's normal with a USB disconnect/reconnect anyway if the ports are different. I got onto this because I was using a USB extension cable for most of my connects with the flash drives, and I was seeing some strange behavior there, e.g., when I jiggled the flash drive, it would start acting as if it had been unplugged and replugged. I actually went through and tested all my USB ports, some with and without the extension cable, and I found one that just doesn't work at all (!), but the behavior was consistent, except that I haven't retested that extension cable yet - not sure I want to.... Another issue I'm seeing that is most clearly a time-related failure is with flash videos in SeaMonkey. I'm running: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686 (x86_64); en-US; rv:1.9.1b3pre) Gecko/20090223 SeaMonkey/2.0a3 with most of the usual plugins, including the Adobe Shockwave Flash 10.0 r22 plugin. This is the i586 aka 32-bit version. I tried using the 64-bit version, which I _think_ I got from rpmforge, but it just doesn't work right, and it can't be installed simultaneously with the 32-bit version. (I'm also using nspluginwrapper, of course, which is really nice.) The problem is that, after some indeterminate period of time, usually overnight, the flash videos stop working properly. They either load for about 2 seconds and hang, or they play for 10-30 seconds with no sound, then a burst of high-speed "catch-up" sound, then either nothing or the echoes of the last fragment of sound, and so on. Frequently, even when I close the offending tab, the sound takes up to a minute or two to stop its echoes. The only solution I've found is to close SM altogether and restart it. Then, all is well. I realize that a) this isn't a CentOS issue per se, and b) I'm using the 2.0 alpha test pre-release version of SM. However, I have found, through bitter experience and regret, that the standard release of SeaMonkey 1.x is worse. Now, I know there are some who will say "Use Firefox," but, frankly, I really don't like the way too many of its "featuers" work, and I really, _really_, REALLY prefer (a mild word for it) the SeaMonkey/Netscape behaviors. I should also note that it doesn't matter how many flash videos I play that work, 0 or 1 or a dozen, once I hit that one that doesn't, it's close all tabs and restart. It's annoying, even when I just close the thing SM and let its semi-automatic re-open all tabs on restart, because usually that doesn't reestablish existing logins (it's kind of intermittent there), and I am usually logged into Yahoo and Gmail all the time. There are also other failures I've seen that I can dimly recall and that I thought at the time were time-related, and, miraculously! a reboot solved them all, at least until the next time. I don't remember any of the specifics of those, and I haven't adopted the practice of making notes on ALL of them yet, but it's just my (primary) desktop, and I haven't seen anything remotely catastrophic in those areas. Yet. So what? I was wondering if anyone else had any thoughts on issues of this nature (time-related failures). Thanks. mhr

truecrypt & kernel 2.6.24

Hi all, Has anyone used TrueCrypt on a XEN based machine before? I'm running CentOS 5.3 with kernel 2.6.18 but when I launch TrueCrypt, it keeps on telling me I need kernel 2.6.24 or later. "Your system uses an old version of the Linux Kernel. Due to a bug in the Linux Kernel, your system may stop responding when writing data to a TrueCrypt volume. This problem can be solved by upgrading the kernel version to 2.6.24 or later" Now, the CentOS repositories doesn't have 2.6.24, so do I have to build the kernel manually? And will there be any problems when doing so? I like to just run "yum update" when needed. Making manual documentation is ok for one server, but doing this for several servers is a big amount of time, and relies on the admin to have the time to do so, but automating this would be great. Crontabs

Hey list, I have several crontabs set up to run at night and I'm not convinced they are running but of course, I'm not here to see for sure! The crontabs are like the following example; 30 20 * * * sh /home/a_user/nightlyscrips/nightly_script_1 > /home/a_user/nightlyscripts/`date +%d-%m-%Y--%H-%M-%S`.log However, if this would have successfully ran last night I would surely expect to see 09-06-2009--20-30-00.log in the nightlyscripts directory? But its not there, this goes for all my cron jobs. I have three scripts running at different times in the night all echoing out to a log file like above so I can see how they did but a week after setting them up and no log files exist. The crontabs are running under root and if I copy the command and paste it in terminal and run that from root it runs fine? I set a cron tab up this morning just to see what happens; 35 08 * * * touch /home/a_user/test_file This worked fine, the file was created. Whats happening to my other cron tabs? How can I diagnose the problem? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading! KDE and mounting CD's / DVD's without noexec

Hi e, I am normally use gnome and would do the following to make my CD / DVD mount with exec gnome-mount --write-settings --device /dev/sdc0 -o exec What is the equivalent in KDE ? My initial research suggests that I actually have to write a custom udev rule to achieve this. PPPoE/ADSL configuration questions.

I am building a CentOS 5 box to ship to Houston which will be a gateway system on an SBC DSL connection for a while until the client gets a T1 installed. I have read up on using adsl-setup and related software, but never done PPPoE on anything but LinkSys commodity boxes. I have examined the adsl-setup script, and I think I understand how this works, but want to be sure I understand things first. The box has dual 10/100/1000 NICs, eth0 for the internal LAN, and eth1 for the PPPoE interface, and later the T1. After running the adsl-setup script, answering the prompts, it appears that it will create an ifcfg-ppp0 interface which will take care of handling the eth1 interface. It also should handle default route setting when the system boots, and do the initial setting of the /etc/resolv.conf file. We will not be using the adsl package firewalling/NAT as we have our own procedures for this. This seems reasonably straightforward, but I know Murphy is always ready to pounce as soon as I assume anything. Is adsl-setup and its associated programs the best way to handle this on a CentOS box? I think that the WAN interface will appear as ppp0 when the system is running. When we move the system to the T1, is it sufficient to edit the ifcfg-ppp0 script setting ONBOOT=no, then do a normal configuration of eth1 using system-config-network? This is something I will have to talk somebody through over the phone unless it would work to connect the DSL modem and T1 router to a network hub/switch with eth1 so that I could configure eth1 while logged in via the DSL connection, the restart the networking to have it bring down the DSL connection, then bring up the T1. Make sure you have only one default gateway on your server defined on your Internet facing interface. This should be getting assigned from the DHCP request to your ISP so make sure you don't have a gateway in your internal interface. As far as Asterisk crashing, that sounds like application problem (like Nate said) trying to communicate over the connection that was pulled out. However, make sure it's listening on all interfaces (0.0.0.0), or just the internal static IP, so it's not specifically listening on the DHCP IP that could change or go away when the network cable is yanked. A local tcpdump or wireshark should shed some light on this problem if the above doesn't change anything. -- Dave Jones

GIMP 2.3.15 for EL5, no newer libs required

Folks, I've build a tiny repo to provide GIMP 2.3.15 (and 2.3.14 as a possible fallback) for EL5. GIMP 2.3.15 is the last version of GIMP that builds with no errors with the GTK+ version that ships with EL. 2.3.15 is "almost GIMP 2.4", as 2.3.19 was the last development release prior to 2.4.0. To the extent of my knowledge, Akkana Peck wrote the first edition of her book on GIMP 2.4 using a development edition 2.3.something, where "something" was not newer than 13. I therefore hope that most of the features and improvements brought by 2.4 over 2.2 are already present in 2.3.15 (or 2.3.14). These builds are obviously not as stable as 2.2.13, nor are they patched against bugs or newer vulnerabilities. I have adapted (from Mandriva's 2.3.14 as of 2007.1) the patches for CVE-2006-4519, CVE-2007-2949 and CVE-2007-3741. To get these builds (RPMs and SRPMs), use the repo file: http://odiecolon.lastdot.org/el5/odiecolon.repo The site is not browsable, because I can't make it so (Lucian, any help?). Still, the repo should work (it worked for me). RealTek 8168B (Rev 02) Issue

The 8168B (02) NIC works well except that it does not go into promiscuous mode despite advertising itself in that mode after being so directed with ifconfig. Unfortunately, the little box is destined to be an IDS monitor, so that function is essential. The board is an Intel Atom 330 run as x86_64, the nic is internal. We tried three drivers: the one in the 2.6.18-128.1.10.el5 kernel yields a high count of dropped packets (known problem), and the drivers from Realtek and El Repo. None solve the promiscuous problem (although they fix the funny dropped counter issue). Apparently the chip has no MII capability either. Anyone have any idea as how to make this chip do the promiscuous mode thing other than adding another nic card ?

Intel Graphics support in future releases

Since my computers use built-in Intel graphics chips (which work great with CentOS 5.3), I've been worrying about Ubuntu's (and other "cutting edge" distributions) problems with these. It appears to be an Xorg problem. What I don't understand is why Xorg would release something that only half worked with a large segment of the computers out there. I'm also wondering how Red Hat / CentOS will handle such a problem -- or have they already addressed it? Probably shouldn't worry about a "possible" problem, but I do anyhow. -- RonB -- Using CentOS 5.3

Greetings, I am looking for resources on how to build my own Centos install CD for a preselected package set that I want to install. I think Red Hat may have had this functionality at some point but it has been a while since I have needed to do this. I found this on how to build my own kernel - http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/BuildingKernelModules - which I will need to exercise as well, but I want to build my own .iso that I can run a kickstart or similar mechanism from. Networking Issue

Need some opinions on making a multihomed box more resilient to failure. This server runs asterisk and performs nat and firewalling for an office. Its wan nic is plugged directly into a cable modem and I am stuck with it being configured as a dhcp client. The lan nic services a small office, and has a static IP but of course, no default gateway. When an internet outage occurs, asterisks sip stack tanks and the pbx dives. So I have setup fqdn's/ip's in the hosts file for all sip peers it will attempt to resolve, and setup a local dns with all rfc1912 zones so every query asterisk can possibly make will be answered locally. Now it seems there is still one last hurdle, when the connection is yanked to simulate a complete outage, asterisk still goes down. I can only assume this happens now as a result of no default gateway? Would setting up a silly route for 0.0.0.0/0 to say 127.0.0.1 for the internal nic in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/route-eth1 with a metric higher than what the ISP's dhcp servers default gw would be possibly cure this? My hope is that when the wan nic goes down, a route is still available. I can't think of any other network shortcoming that is left when that external nic goes down, I am hoping this is finally it, so asterisk will stop core dumping and yelling "Serious Network Trouble". Disabling IPv6 in CentOS 4.7

I thought I'd done that standard stuff /etc/modprobe.conf: alias net-pf-10 off alias ipv6 off /etc/sysconfig/network: NETWORKING_IPV6=no But on reboot I still see ipv6 entries against the eth devices, ipv6 module is still loaded, and sit0 tunnel is present. What needs to be done to disable ipv6? -- rgds Stephen

Hello, I'm trying to get the LD_LIBRARY_PATH set from .bash_profile (Centos 5.3 fully updated). This is a part of my .bash_profile: export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/home/szyman/omnet/omnetpp-2.3p1/lib export R_HISTSIZE=2000000000 Everything works fine under standard ssh login, but under NX client the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable is missing (the R_HISTSIZE is exported properly). Hi, I'm currently fiddling with G4U (Ghost for Unix), and I need to setup a local FTP server in order to get it to work. # yum groupinstall "FTP Server" --> installed vsftpd Here's what I'd like to do : * no anonymous access * only one user (user 'install' / pass 'install') The machine I'm installing it on has a static IP ok (192.168.1.252/255.255.255.0). I tried to fiddle with the various configuration options in vsftpd.conf, but to no avail. Googled quite some, but the information I found doesn't seem reliable, more like contradictory. One detail: this isn't a publicly accessible machine, e. g. it's not out there on the wild internet, only on the LAN, so there's no special security considerations. Any suggestions ? Niki Kovacs

Random server reboot after update to CentOS 5.3

Dear ML We upgraded a Dell Poweredge PE 1950 Server the 8th of May. Since then the server rebooted 3 times without external cause (it is located in a server farm with redundant power supply etc.). Looking at the servers monitoring infrastructure with Dell's own OpenManage tools, I get strange errors: [root@servernew ~]# omreport system esmlog (....) Severity : Critical Date and Time : Mon May 11 17:46:59 2009 Description : System Software event: run-time critical stop was asserted Severity : Critical Date and Time : Fri May 15 21:07:57 2009 Description : System Software event: run-time critical stop was asserted Severity : Critical Date and Time : Wed May 20 21:00:53 2009 Description : System Software event: run-time critical stop was asserted (...) This class of errors never happened before in over a year that the server is running. There is no mention of any anomaly, except the boot messages itself, in /var/log/messages. The server runs the 64 bit flavor of CentOS hosting some XEN virtual machines and some PostgreSQL and MySQL databases. It run without any issues with CentOS 5.1 and 5.2. I interpreted these issues as some kernel/software related problem, but do not know how to make a more accurate diagnosis of the problem. Can anybody give me some hint? Let me absolutely clear on this, when I say 'production' I'm speaking about my personal home network only. This network consists of a very few machines with very limited access to the outside world. Question about dd (fill a hard disks' unused space with blanks)

Hi, I'm currently experimenting with G4U (Ghost for Unix), a small cloning application sending disk images to an FTP server. The application reads the whole disk bit by bit, compresses it and then stores it remotely. Due to this approach, it's more or less filesystem-independent. The drawback is that it sometimes results in huge image files. Now I'm currently following a hint which suggests to fill the disks' unused space with zero bits. Here's the command for that: # dd if=/dev/zero of=/0bits bs=20M # rm /0bits Now I gave that a shot, but after half an hour or so, I got a bit impatient. Now the computer does not respond any more. Does that mean he's just way too busy with dd? Or is there some mistake in the command? As I see it, it will just be chugging on and on, no? Shouldn't there be a 'count=x' option somewhere? Niki

script help - '3rd last field'

Hi I need some logic to work out a value for me - this value is _always_ the 3rd last field in a string seperated by '.' but the string could be 5 or 6 fields long, e.g foo.bar.VALUE.baz.lala foor.bar.gigi.VALUE.baz.lala I need to find VALUE - if this were python or something i could do it but this has to be in shell - Any clues? thanks
