BBC Player in firefox?

Hi, I am new to Centos and have installed the 5.3 64bit desktop. Managed to get the Adobe 64bit flash working so i can now watch Youtube but when i try to get the video link working on BBC News i get the black square screen with the white circle going round and round but it doesnt load the video? OT: looking for a rsync equivalent for Windows platforms

Hi all, Does anyone know of a good & free rsync type program for Windows platforms? Like most of us, I need to work on both Windows & Linux environments, and would like to sync some data (music, videos, photos, documents, thunderbird profiles, FF bookmarks, etc) between a USB HDD, my Linux (CentOS + KDE) PC, and Windows Laptop at the office. I found a program called Toucan (which also has a portable version) but it doesn't seem to work as well as rsync. When I tell it to "sync (copy)" or "sync (mirror)" file between the USB HDD, or even my Linux PC via the LAN, it copies every single file, every time. So it's not very efficient. [OT] Simple Shell Script (while loop)

Hey Guys, I can not find the corrent syntax for what I am trying to acheive with a while loop. Having said that I'm not exactly sure what you would call it so I have been googling with no success probably for that reason. I am just working with some sub directories except there is one I don't want to use so I have a while loop like the following; if we stubmle into the sub directory I wish to leave alone then there is an IF statement and I have used the break command which is wrong, I don't want to end this whole loop I just want to skip onto the next increment of the loop as it were skipping this sub directory. Break is the wrong command but what should it be? question on whiptail

There is a script that uses whiptail command. Is there a way to wrap the script that calls whiptail 4 times and just send a carriage return to each character window that pops up? I want it to basically just accept the default option for each of the four prompted windows. without me hitting return 4 times. How do I do that? I tried unsuccessfully: script_calling_whiptail << EOF \n \n \n \n \n EOF ~ I dont want to change/edit the script as it may change again in the future. Thanks Jerry

CPU usage over estimated?

I have a quad core CPU running Centos5. When I use top, I see that running processes use 245% instead of 100%. Swap priorities with swapon (Is my swap drive working?)

Hey Listee's I have a CentOS server with 2GB of ram and a swap drive of 4GB; swapon -a shows my swap drive as 4GB with only about 350 bytes in use (which is fine as my server idles with about 350-400MB ram usage so no swap should be in use. However my one and only swap drive had a priority of -1. I had read that the swap drive priority doesn't matter too much because I only have one swap drive so the kernel hasn't got to make a choice but also that after a certain kernel version (which is think was like 1.3.x?) it didn't even use the priority value and my kernel is newer (I have 2.6.18-128.1.6.e15). Basically I have read difference things from difference source on the old interwebwrok and seek clarification. In the confusion I set my swap drive priority from -1 to 1 because I thought that if the drive priority were a negative value it might not actually use the swap drive. Ultimately I can't tell because there currently isn't enough memory usage demand on the server. On a side note: I'm a reformed Windows admin and have seen the light and am moving each server one at a time over to Linux so I am used to poor memory management and needing massive page files. Realistically the swap drive shouldn't been in use but I am just worried then when this server goes live it will hit 2GB of ram usage and the swap won't kick in. Is there anyway I can check? But obviously it isn't sufficient for the BCM4312. eth0 works well (although DNS dies on a regular basis, for which there are a lot of heated discussions about NetworkManager and dns on the various linux sites). eth1 is not found and when I right-click on the NetworkManager icon on the top right corner of the screen, it shows a wireless in a grayed out text. When I go to System>Administration>Network, I cannot enable the wireless (eth1) device. It tries and then after trying to find an IP, it fails.

Hi list. I am dealing with DRBD (+GFS as its DLM). GFS configuration needs a CLVMD configuration. So, after syncronized my (two) /dev/drbd0 block devices, I start the clvmd service and try to create a clustered logical volume. It recognized the dvd and played it...but it gives me an error/warning about dropping lots of frames and jerks to a halt once every few seconds. I'm working my way through the xine FAQ concerning performance to see if I can fix that on this laptop. The laptop is only about 18 mo old and not a dog. It is an Intel duo with 2GM of ram, and should have enough steam to play a dvd. It plays them well under MS Vista, but jerky under Centos 5.3 and xine, so it has to be a software issue.

I have this line: ALSA=`aplay --version` in a script. when I execute the script I get the message line 187: --version: command not found when I do "aplay --version" on the command line it works just fine. What is happening here, --version is a valid command line option? Thanks, jerry

Dovecot under brute force attack - nice attacker

Hi List, optimizing the configuration on one of our servers (which was hit by a brute force attack on dovecot) showed an odd behavior. The short story: On one of our servers an attacker did a brute force attack on dovecot (pop3). Since the attacker closed and reopened the connection after every user/password combination the logs showed many lines like this: dovecot: pop3-login: Aborted login: user=<test>,...... The problem: If the attacker wouldn't have closed and reopened the connection no log would have been generated and he/she would have endless tries. Not even an iptables/hashlimit or fail2ban would have kicked in. How to reproduce: telnet dovecot-server pop3 user test pass test1 user test pass test2 ... QUIT ->Only the last try gets logged. Question: Is there any way to close the connection after the first wrong user/pass combination. So an attacker would be forced to reopen it? Any other Ideas? Henry

I Don't need anything to do? Is there a way for lsusb too? How could I know that my hardware (connected to my pc or not) is supported? - sorry for asking this: but is there a "devmgmt.msc" (windows..) "like" software, solution under Linux, where can I see that is my pc's hardwares recognized correctly? Thank you

"print notifier" icon

The Print Notifier icon appears in on my Gnome panel when I print something. After the job is completed, the icon grays out, but it's still present. With my Fedora setup, the icon appears when the job is active or pending, then it goes away completely until the next time I print something. Instability with later 4.x kernels?

I have an Athlon with about 10 HDDs plugged in, primarily to do Disk2Disk backups. Some drives are PATA, some are SATA, some are USB. A strange concoction, but it's been relatively stable for some 4-5 years, despite numerous upgrades and so on. It's been running CentOS 4 for a long, long time. (years) Recently, I've started to have problems with its stability, and after 2 weeks of swapping hardware, found that using an earlier kernel restores its stability! It takes a few days to determine if anything "goes south", so debugging is very, very slow. But I get random read errors, either SCSI errors or (a few times) HDA read errors. Once the read errors begin, the system becomes very unresponsive, and often won't restart, even though I wait for hours, without my hitting the "kill switch". # uname -a Linux backuphost 2.6.9-67.0.22.EL #1 Wed Jul 23 17:17:45 EDT 2008 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux The failures occur on all /dev/sd* devices, even those that are USB. Once, /dev/hdc had a similar problem after /dev/sdb had failed. It's not possible to completely implement CSP server side, but the class will catch most violations of a CSP policy and thus give some protection to users who are not running a CSP aware web browser. Another gotcha with the class, it seems importHTML() is not mb safe so if using importHTML() to get the document into a DOMDocument object for filtering, and the document contains any multi-byte characters, it seems libxml2 will encode them and there seems to be no way to stop it from doing it (at least with the php wrapper to libxml2). However if the document to be filtered is xhtml, you can use importXML() on it libxml2 does the right thing in leaving the mb characters alone. Once filtered, you can use saveHTML() to produce html instead of xhtml for browser compatibility, it seems saveHTML() is mb safe.

NOOBE help

I know, I should not have to ask this question, but it appears that ALL my previous yum.repos.d entries have been trashed, with the only ones left is base, CentOS Media then the mirrors.rpmforge.reo, rhel-mondo.repo, rpmforge.repo, and webmin.repo. I've been bitten by the mixing of repositories before and want to avoid that scenario. Something is amok in the existing, and it throws all kinds of errors about something not found or such, so I'm asking some kind soul of they would share their working repo file structure for me? I *think* I have protect base, and priorities installed already, but will double check. This is yet another new clean install after a botched attempt to recover some data from a mondo-rescue DVD which apparently dis some ugly things to stuff including grub. Anyhow, my main items of interest would be stuff like clamav-milter, spamass-milter, and anything else dealing with handling spam, not to mention some other scientific software like udunits, perhaps Grads (if exists), etc.. all geared towards weather. My humble thanks and apologies for my dumbness for not keeping good backups of important stuff.. it WONT happen again ! head hanging low :( Sam

I have looked through the logs, but don't see any thing in there that shows me why it has rebooted. How can I debug this? Sometimes it will go for days without rebooting then today it has rebooted 6 times at random times. I have modified grub.conf to go back to 2.6.18-92.1.22.el5xen on my dom0 and my only domU so we will see what happens (or hopefully doesn't happen) the next few days. I have a 3.0 P4 CPU with HT that does not support 64-bit so it's running an i686 kernel. It does have a Broadcom NIC like an earlier post was suspicious of: 02:08.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82562EZ 10/100 Ethernet Controller (rev 02) 02:09.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5703X Gigabit Ethernet (rev 02) I have upgraded about 8 other servers with no random reboot problems but they are all running on a newer processors with a 64-bit kernel. -- Dave Jones

Removing old kernels

I have the following kernels on my /boot: 2.6.18-128.1.6 2.6.18-92.1.18 2.6.18-92.1.22 I'm low on /boot space and need to remove the oldest version. It appears that I cannot use yum to remove since all of the versions are the same (only the release is different). I believe that I can use rpm to remove the old version, but I also need to remove them from the grub.conf. Any other considerations and/or methods? Frank M. The basic argument seems to be that CPU's are fast enough now that the limitation on throughput is the drive itself, and that SATA resolved the bottleneck that PATA caused with kernel raid. The arguments then go on to give numerous examples where a failing hardware raid controller CAUSED data loss, where a raid card died and an identical raid card had to be scrounged from eBay to even read the data on the drives, etc. - problems that apparently don't happen with kernel software raid. The main exception I've seen to using software raid are high availability setups where a separate external unit ($$$) provides the same hard disk to multiple servers. Then the raid can't really be in the kernel but has to be in the hardware. I'd be very interested in hearing opinions on this subject.

Yum-complete-transaction wants to wipe my system out

After some enabling/disabling new repos (pgdg for PostgreSQL specifically) and admittedly some yum action that may have gone uncompleted, I am advised to run yum-complete-transaction. However, when I attempt to do this, yum warns that 225 packages will be erased, all of which I deeply care for. How can I safely back out of this situation?
