resolving names it is really slow slow with CentOS5.x using named

Hi all, I have a problem using named with different CentOS5 servers (2 servers): all they are really slow to resolv any internet address and most of time fails to resolv. This situation differs if I use "forwarders" servers like opendns: resolving names it is really really quickly. And I don't understand why. On the other hand I have tested three DNS servers using Windows 2003, Windows 2008 and Ubuntu hardy and these problems doesn't occurs (I don't need to configure forwarders on any of them): all resolves any name and really fast. IPv6 is disabled on both CentOS servers. Somebody knows why these dns servers are slow?? Thanks. -- CL Martinez carlopmart {at} gmail {d0t} com

I have 2 Dell Latitude LS's that work work fine out of the box with CentOS 4.7 and 5.3. They barely meet the i686 cutoff date. JohnStanley

I'm not sure what the firmware does exactly. Look in your /var/log/messages file. There will be some mention of 'failed to load firmware' associated with the driver load. You need to have a partitular file living in /lib/firmware/ -- the name is wired into the driver. The SMC Ez Connect card needed something called isl3890. I don't remember where I got this. My Intel card needed ipw2100-1.3*, this I got off a site after googling for 'firmware ipw2100' (or something like that). Getting the Intel was easy -- there is a web site with all of the info needed. Getting the prism firware was a bit of a hassle. You might have to unpack a file from the CD that came with the WiFi card -- this means you need some Windows tool to unpack/install it someplace and then copy the magic file from where the Windows installer/unpacker puts it to your Linux box and make sure it has the proper name. The last two even had the internal wireless work without effort. You may need to do some work to get the wireless functioning okay - NetworkManager seems to help if you use both wired and wireless. For me the advantage of using CentOS is that all machines have the same stuff in the same place, so I do not waste time looking for files and trying to work out how Ubuntu or whatever distro does something. Also, I keep a local mirror of updates so I only need to use bandwidth once to get my updates. I used to use Fedora, but got annoyed at having to do complete updates every 12 ~ 18 months. I'd just try it and see, one can always grab another distro if CentOS is really too difficult to get functioning. Rob

gethostbyname clarification

I have an issue, although it's a result of sketchy code in the sip implementation in Asterisk that's been around forever, I am sure I am going to have to fix it some other way as many people have waited with no fix yet from Digium. If a name resolution fails for a remote sip peer, the entire stack tanks and local sip phones don't work either. We have several sip trunks and an analog trunk for redundancy when the SIP providers are down. Problem is if the net connection is down *nothing* works. Most people suggest to run your own caching nameserver which we do. We had long outage and sure enough eventually all the sip phones couldn't connect. I fear in hard coding the remote sip peers in the hosts file incase that changes. The server was also restarted which I believe clears out the name server cache? Is there some way I can configure nsswitch.conf from "hosts: files dns" to something like "hosts: files dns file2" so if those ip's ever changed I would have time to figure it out and update the file unless another outage occurred at the same time :)? Anyone got a better idea how to solve this dilemma? Thanks! jlc

lacie drive and CentOS 5.3 question...

I'm adding a couple lacie external USB drives to my CentOS 5.3 system and running into a few issues... when I connect them, I see the following in dmesg: usb 1-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 11 usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice And that's it. No device assignment information, the usb-storage module does not appear to be loaded and I am unable to access the drive. I do see the following in lsusb: Bus 001 Device 011: ID 0451:6250 Texas Instruments, Inc. I'm assuming the kernel or udev doesn't know what to do with the given device ID and isn't correctly mapping it to the usb-storage module (I have manually loaded usb-storage with modprobe usb-storage prior to attaching the device). I found a post describing how to manually map a vendor id / device id to usb-storage, but it has to do with the old hotplug system from CentOS 4. Can anyone advise me on how I can tell my system the above device is a mass storage device? Do I need to write some udev rules? These drives work fine (automatically) on a Fedora 10 machine. Also, I am using the "plus" kernel on my CentOS machine. Thanks, Ray

System hang during shutdown (halt)

Alle, I'm running V5.3 (newly installed) on an FJ E8020 laptop. The problem I have is when shutting down (*not* rebooting). NetworkManager fails to stop and after (during?) the postfix shutdown, the system seems to hang. I cannot access via another screen or remotely. I can't find any clues in the log files. I could use some suggestions on troubleshooting. rsyslog expression based filters

Hello All, Does the rsyslog version in CentOS 5 support expression based filters? I'm asking because a filter I believe should be working, isn't and I cannot figure out why. I'm trying to get the following expression working (might wrap): if $source == 'astappsrv2' and $programname == 'asterisk' then /var/log/asterisk/astappsrv2.log Every time I restart rsyslog, I get this error (slightly edited to make it fit): rsyslogd:unknown priority name "log" rsyslogd:the last error occured in /etc/rsyslog.conf, line 16 rsyslogd:warning: selector line without actions will be discarded The line rsyslog is having problems with is the expression based filter. astappsrv2 is the log client, and it's successfully sending it's logs to the remote log host (the one on which I'm having problems with the expression filter). I know the logs are coming in because I've setup property based filters that all work just fine. I can take this to the rsyslog list if need be. I wanted to try here first. (Probably *any* distro will work just fine.) CentOS will work with older hardware. The only hardware that will be problematical will be winmodems -- *ALL* linux distros do badly with winmodems. It is a combination of lack of documentation about what is going on inside the winmodem and a serious lack of motivation: most Linux developers have real internet connections and no longer have an interest in dialup, plus *real* (RS232-based) modems are cheap and ALL of them work out-of-the-box. From many points of view, winmodems are pointless hardware. CentOS only has these problems WRT laptops (or desktops to a lesser extent): It is an 'conservitive' distro (same can be said about all of the RHEL-based distros). This means three *main* things: 1) Support for bleeding edge hardware might be a problem. Mostly things like sound cards, WiFi NICs, and (cheap) digital cameras. Most other hardware is 'standardized' enough to work on some level (eg video cards will work at basic resolution levels, etc.) RedHat does back port critical hardware drivers (things like mass storage controller drivers (SATA, SCSI, RAID, etc.)). 2) You won't get the most recent, hot, bleeding edge version of software. You also won't get buggy software either. No great loss IMHO. 3) RHEL distros will lack most of the flashy toys (eg fancy multi-media), including flashy eye-candy. Only 1 is really a 'problem' for laptops, since fresh off the showroom floor laptops tend to have all sorts of bleeding edge hardware. With a desktop one can mix-and-match compatible PCI cards, etc. and avoid or cure these problems. One *could* just snarf a suitable kernel from FC-land if one knows what one is doing, etc. 2 & 3 can be solved with a combination of CentOSPlus, epel, rpmforge, and lots of fun with rpmbuild and srpms from FC-land (or even more fun with tar & make and related tools). I've even dropped in RPMs from Mandrake and SUSE onto my system (rpmfind.net can be quite useful at times). My wife's box has a very intermittent problem, when booting from the Maxtor IDE hard drive. This has been going on for about 2 1/2 years.... The box is a Compaq EVO D300v for the Enterprise. When it boots, there is a SMART advisory from the BIOS that says failure is immenient. Occasionally, it will not boot, because the BIOS does not see the hard drive. I replaced the EIDE cable, but the problem of sometimes not seeing the hard drive on boot continues. I suspect it has to do with something loose in the electronics of the drive, because if I press on both ends of the EIDE cable, the problem goes away and then it will boot OK. The box is currently M$ Windows only. I just booted it from my Knoppix Live CD and ran smartctl on it. Below are the results. When I ran the Maxtor Diagnostics on the hard drive, 3 times, each time the quick 90 second SMART test said that I should run the Read test, which takes about one hour. Each time I ran the Read test, it passed OK. 3 times. Should I suggest to my wife that she let me replace the hard drive, now, at her convenience, before it fails completely? Is there anything in the smartctl results that indicates that is not the appropriate thing to do, considering the length of time this problem has existed? I did not run the Maxtor Burn In test or low level format, because I do not want to reinstall everything on this hard drive. The smartctl results certainly seem to indicate something badly awry, which the Maxtor Diagnostics, on the Read only test, did not pick up. TIA! Send syslog to a remote server

Hi, I am running CentOS 5 and I tried to config flowing statement in syslog.conf to send syslog messages to a remote server running on FC 9, but it did not work. There was nothing send to the FC9. "*.info;mail.none;authpriv.none;cron.none @@192.168.1.5" Could anyone advice whether the syslog in CentOS 5 does not support remote server, or I could be missing something? Auto-installing security updates?

I've been asked to think about setting up an installation for a recently- widowed man. His needs are small - mail, Internet, on-line banking, basically - but his wife dealt with all of it on her laptop and he feels very insecure. It seems to me that CentOS would be perfect for him except for the need to keep it securely patched. I'm wondering if it's possible to auto-install security updates - for that matter, with so small a set of applications perhaps auto-installing every update would be good enough. Maybe this could be done with a script run under cron.daily, so that anacron picks it up? I'd be glad of any advice. Anne

I understand that 64bit programs use more memory because the pointers, integers, etc. are now 64bit instead of 32bit, but running a 32bit program on a 64bit architecture is the same as running that program on a 32bit architecture (just concerning the memory used)? At least, that's my conclusion after running the above test. Am I wrong? Thank you! Video on (video-capable digital) still camera not accessible

I'm looking for any intelligent commentary on this - it may be a little off topic, but I'm wondering if anyone knows about this. This isn't short, so bear with me. Yesterday, I tried to download a video off of one of my digital still cameras that also takes videos (Canon Powershot SX10 iS) on my CentOS x86_64 5.3 system. When I plugged the camera into a USB port and turned it on, it showed no images available, AND no device showed up mounted for it. Now, this is not entirely unusual. I know there's a .mov on the camera, two actually, so I tried putting the SD card in a card reader and plugged that in. Nothing. No "disk" was mounted, which is what normally happens when I do that. I brought up the Win guest, attached the USB "drive" for the camera and Windows installed the device just fine. I opened an Explorer window and the camera was there, with the photo and two .mov files in its folder, so I went in and clicked the photo and that was it. The Windows guest crashed, and when it came back up, it booted so slowly I wasn't sure it was going to boot at all, and the network connections were gone. I tried a number of things (restart Samba, reboot Windows in safe mode, then back to normal, restart Samba with Windows running, on and on). Nothing worked. All the TCP/IP settings were the same, and the network "card" showed one connection that was active, but no IP address, no path to host, pings all failed, etc. This morning, I figured that, since the guest network seemed to have been blown away completely, I'd reconfigure it and try again. Voila! All my drives are now sharing properly and the NAT network between host and guest works just fine. I am wondering if anyone could hazard a guess w.r.t. these issues: 1) CentOS not seeing either device (camera or SD-in-reader) as mountable 2) How to mount the SD card manually given that it does not appear to be a vfat (which is how most of these have shown up before IIRC). 3) VMWare losing its network configuration (or whatever it lost) that smashed its network connection to the host 4) (most important) Any ideas on how to get at the video files on the SD card (if I can mount it as the right kind of fs, that would be enough) Thanks. mhr

NetworkManager under CentOS 4 *without* GNome...

I have been *manually* dealing with my wired and wireless network interfaces on my laptop. I have a pair of config files (in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/: ifcfg-eth0 (wired: Intel Corporation 82540EP Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Mobile)) and ifcfg-eth1 (wireless: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter), both with USERCTL=true (and ifcfg-eth0 also has ONBOOT=true). I have manually fiddled with the ESSID, etc. in ifcfg-eth1 when needed, but this is tiresome. I would like to use NetworkManager, since this sounds like it might be easier. I don't use the GNome desktop, so I probably won't be able to use the stock GNome applet (this would not be a problem normally since I would just write my own GUI thingy, but there seems to be a complete lack of documentation for the GNome applet! I run CentOS 4.8 on my laptop (and no, I am in no hurry to upgrade to CentOS 5). I've started NetworkManager (as root) and started NetworkManagerInfo (both as myself and a 'dummy' user with a vanila GNome desktop), but NetworkManagerInfo complains that there are no network interfaces available. Where does NetworkManager/NetworkManagerInfo get information about available network interfaces? I know that *both* interfaces work just fine using the manual startup (eg ifup eth0 and ifup eth1). Is there a config file I need to mess with? If so, where is it? Hi, I'm running a CentOS 4. server and I sometimes face a weird problem. It is a weird performance problem, and here is how I discovered it. This server runs OpenVZ virtual machines, and one of them is an asterisk server for my personal use. The first symptom of the problem is that the voice quality became flaky. So I logged on the server to see what could be eating cpu cycles, when I ran top, it took almost one minute before top actually showed. Another hint is that when I run dstat (a monitoring utility that is a mix of iostat and vmstat and other stats), I often get a "missed xx ticks", where xx is a number. The only solution I've found up to now is to reboot... But hey, this isn't a Windows 98 machine :)! I tried restarting the VZ system, which restarts all the VMs, but it didn't solve the problem. I can't tell if the problem occurs on a stock centos kernel, because the server is running production (but non-critical) virtual machines, so it is always running the openVZ kernel. Alle, I have an HP L7780 MFP, which is supported under hplip 1.7.2 but not the current install of 1.6.7. Does anyone know of a way just to add that particular driver to 1.6.7, or will it require removing the standard 1.6.7 and doing a custom install of 1.7.2. cd to folder with spaces - in a script

How can I cd into a dir, when it contains spaces, and I need to use it in a script? the directory: /home/user/this is a folder/something normally I would use: cd /home/user/this\ is\ a\ folder/something/ but in a script I cant just add the "\" like: find . -type d | while read FOLDER; do cd $FOLDER; done $ No such file or directory the problem is, that there would be more "special chars" then spaces, "sed" them all? :D Thank you

I have the following gnome terminal profile settings: Backspace = ASCII DEL Delete Key = Escape Sequence If the logged in session in the terminal window is my own user id then the delete key does nothing. If however, I su -l in the same terminal window then the delete key removes the character under the cursor and left shifts the rest of the line. I am fairly confident that the delete key worked in the same fashion for my usual user id up until quite recently. ntfs-3g question

This is probably a dumb question, but I've looked around and I can't find anything on this. I'm using ntfs-3g now, from rpmforge, to access my M$ Window$ disks for offline backup and other such menial tasks, and I noticed that the ntfs file systems are not mounted automatically, but I have to mount them manually as ntfs-3g devices. I _thought_ when I installed the whole dkms-fuse and fuse-ntfs-3g packages from rpmforge that they would be more integrated into the system (i.e., direct automount). Is that just my erroneous expectation, or did I miss something in the installation process? Thanks. mhr PS: Still no resolution on the Canon problem. Canon suggested I use a card reader (which I mentioned having tried and failed in my question to them). LOVE that tech support for Linux....

Even with speedstep properly configured, you're going to burn a lot more power on any P4.Doing the same basic file and print services, the Atom boxes we built used around 35W average vs 140W on the P4 dual cores that they replaced. Only had one failure so far but we think that was user error - something seems to have blocked the fan because all other systems had lots of dust in it and the failed unit was perfectly clean.... Overall, the Atom boxes worked great for us. We didn't have a specific reason not to choose VIA, atom boards were just easier to find, at least when we were doing this. Can't help you with a specific model board though since we only needed a single lan port... web filtering for remote computers

Hi, I am using Squid for local users since two years & is working fine. I am trying to implement web filtering for remote computers e.g few laptops & branch / franchise computers on dynamic ips. I do not want to use Squid proxy for it, if all remote computers will use Squid from my public ip, bandwidth utilization will increase. Need valuable suggestion to achieve this. USB issues

I am using centos5.3 x86_64 on a gigabyte GA-MA78GM-US2H motherboard. When I insert a USB thumbdrive its detected with dmesg, I mount it and start to copy files. Then plugging the thumbdrive into the hub. I get the same results. I have never had USB issues before - any ideas? Jerry

Firefox 3, Sun jre1.6.0_12_x86_64 and enabling a plugin

SOMEbody on this list must have this combination working by now. How does one enable the firefox jre plugin for Sun's x86_64 distribution? Every site that I can find refers to making a link to a now non-existent plugins directory under the jre installation directory. The official firefox plugin pages refers to the existence of a Sun x86_64 jre but provides no details on how to enable it. The Sun site speaks only about installing i386 versions. Problems with latest 5.3 yum update and grub

I recently updated two 64-bit CentOS 5.3 systems via yum update. - One system had two physical SATA hard drives - drive 0 was Windows XP w/SP3 w/NTFS, drive 1 was CentOS; - The other system had two physical SATA hard drives, configured via a hardware mirror of RAID 1 (mirroring) After the latest yum update, grub on both systems failed me, dropping to the grub prompt. For the dual-boot system, I ended up reformatting and reinstalling Windows on drive 0. The CentOS was not touched. That system is fine now. For the RAID CentOS-only system, I experimented with removing one drive from the mirror and CentOS booted as though it was reboot after a fresh install, though there were some traces that something else (like an upgrade) was mixed in, but didn't work right. I ended up deleting the hardware RAID and removed a drive. That system works fine now. Has anyone else experienced grub problems with more than one drive installed from a recent yum update? I will not perform an update on any other multi-drive systems, including servers, until I know things are fixed. Thanks for any insights. Scott

CentOS5 Desktops authenticating to 389 Directory Server

Hi Everyone. I am doing some LDAP testing. I have setup a 389 Directory Server on CentOS 5 and using the default schema I have populated it with a couple of users. I then did the configuration on the client that I thought was needed to make it authenticate. To test this I expected to be able to use id <uidNumber> of a user I had defined. But I get id: 1001: No such user id: 5001: No such user I then thought perhaps it was an LDAP permissions problem so I tried binding to the LDAP server using a user I know has full rights using these entries in /etc/openldap/ldap.conf there was no change. I know this is very off topic, but getting MySQL and unix ODBC to play nice via SSL on Centos has been a battle. I finally have it working via isql but when I connect via Oracle I get an error. MySql Query Cache

Hi, One of the servers I run is a VPS running Lighttpd fcgi which I am running a simple wordpress blog off of. Since RAM is the biggest limitation I have disabled the query cache on MySql. Now I have the following questions. 1. What does the FCGI server cache now? 2. How can I speed up this setup? 3. Will turning on the query cache speed things up? Hello All, I am getting the following error on re-booting my CentOS 4.5 server: "There was an error loading the theme *Default*" "Couldn't recognize the image file format for file '/*usr*/*share*/*gdm*/*themes*/*Default*/*background*.*png*'" It appears that when I click on the OK dialog the server continues to boot, with no update to the screen. I have in the past verified that this file exists and does not appear to have any problems. I can now get remote access to the server and wish to do whatever it takes to prevent this from happening in the future. This summer I hope to upgrade the box to the latest CentOS. I do know the box will need to be restarted once before that time due to some planned changes at the co-loc. Any ideas on what to change/fix to prevent this from happening again? Thank you very much!
