Preventing hour-long fsck on ext3-filesystem

Hi! I'm justing in the process of setting up a new fileserver for our company. I'm installing CentOS 5.3 (64 bit) on it. One of the "problems" with it is that it has a 3.5TB filesystem for the user data which I formatted during setup as an ext3. Now my experience with our current fileserver is that a 0.5TB ext3 filesystem needs approx half an hour to complete (and kicks in every so and so reboots or every 180days). My estimate is that for the larger filesystem (and the faster machine) the fsck would need well over an hour (being optimistic). I dread the day when I have to reboot the server and wait for 2hours or more just because the system thought it would be a prudent thing to check the filesystem. My question: - is there another stable filesystem (XFS, ReiserFS ...) in the centosplus-kernel where this could be avoided (fsck is faster) and that is as safe as ext3 - Or would it be better to switch off automatic checking with tune2fs Any opinion/experience welcome. Subversion causing Apache to hog memory

Hello: I posted this to the subversion list yesterday and have not received a reponse. I am hoping someone on this list will be able to help me. I have a CentOS 5 server running subversion 1.5.6-0.2.el5.rf installed using yum from the rpmforge repository. I am using svnsync to mirror from another repository to the local machine. It is called from a cron job every 5 minutes. After a few days of running fine, I started getting this error from cron: svnsync: DAV request failed; it's possible that the repository's pre-revprop-change hook either failed or is non-existent svnsync: At least one property change failed; repository is unchanged svnsync: Error setting property 'sync-lock': Failed to start '/usr/local/svn/MyProject/hooks/pre-revprop-change' hook Looking in /var/log/httpd/error_log, I see this: Could not execute PROPPATCH. [500, #206] Failed to start '/usr/local/svn/MyProject/hooks/pre-revprop-change' hook [500, #165001] Can't start process '/usr/local/svn/MyProject/hooks/pre-revprop-change': Cannot allocate memory [500, #12] Looking at top, the machine has allocated all of the RAM available. When I stop httpd, the RAM comes back. I rebooted the machine and ran top in a shell. I then issued the svnsync command in another shell. I can see the memory usage going up each time I run the svnsync command but it does not seem to come down even after leaving the machine idle for a while. If I then stop httpd, the memory comes back. Dell 2950 with CentOS 5.3

Hi all, Any one experience issue with Dell 2950 and CentOS 5.3, I face some issue like this, server install alright. Keep it in production for a while, Done an update one the server. Reboot , It said no boot devices found. Check on the perc6/i controller the both harddisk show online and optimal. Using live cd to check, the both harddisk still have the data. My issue was solve by removing the hard disk, clear the raid configuration. Put in the hard disk and reimport the configuration from the harddisk. The server able to boot up properly. any one know the cause of it, is it the Dell Hardware issue or it is an OS related issue. Regards KS

While it is not a big problem for me I imagine it is for others. The problem only happens when going from using an ldap backkend or AD ldap that is using winbind for enumeration of users and groups or if just in general the winbind service is running. On this happening no Samba Shares are accessable. Does anyone have a fix for this? Or Patch. JohnStanley

openldap and nscd

Hi, This email is a follow-up to my previous email about "Postfix: user unknown", perhaps these are related. Every time I restart openldap i get an error message from nscd: --- May 15 14:53:02 mail nscd: nss_ldap: could not search LDAP server - Server is unavailable --- This is due to a timeout, correct? Here is part of my /etc/ldap.conf --- timelimit 120 bind_timelimit 30 bind_policy soft idle_timelimit 3600 nss_initgroups_ignoreusers root,ldap --- Is there a way to solve this? It's a Windows XP thing, not specific to the distro, and only affects WinXP afaik (doesn't affect Win2K, couldn't care less about Vista). I first came across it trying to install WinXP on a system that had previously had Fedora on it and the installer hangs at a black screen. The "solution" is to do as you've done and disconnect the drive. If it's a single drive system, then install Windows first for dual booting, or if you just want to reinstall Windows over the top of a previous Linux installation then remove all Linux partitions with fdisk first.

Printing graphics on CentOS 5.3

I am absolutely thrilled and delighted to report that the problem I have been having on CentOS since I first started using it, back in 4.4, of having all images (graphics) print out from the image viewer as all-black pages appears to be gone! I just printed 13 graphics from the image viewer directly to my laser printer, and they're all excellent. I suppose it could be that I'm using a more-supported laser printer now (Brother 2140) than then (Minolta PagePro 1100), with a driver that actually works properly - I don't know. I'm just extremely pleased that this works, regardless pf who should get the blame/credit! Okay, I'm getting my breath back, now.... <RBFG> mhr

Dealing with brute force attacks

Over the weekend one of our servers at a remote location was hammered by an IP originating in mainland China. This attack was only noteworthy in that it attempted to connect to our pop3 service. We have long had an IP throttle on ssh connections to discourage this sort of thing. But I had not considered the possibility that other services were equally at risk. Researching this on the web does not reveal any comprehensive list of vulnerable ports or services. Most discussion centres on ssh, then some on ftp, and relatively few regarding pop3. So, my questions are these: 1. Should I throttle all new connections regardless of destination ports? In other words: are there any legitimate reasons that a single IP would require more than one new connection every 30 seconds or so? 2. Moving pass the obvious and unhelpful "everything", what services are particularly vulnerable to these types of attacks? Does a list exist anywhere? Network Install Procedure Question

Hi there -- I wanted to do a netinstall of the 5.3 release, and the source that I had in mind was either an ftp or http site. When going through this procedure, am I going to download the .iso images from one of the mirror sites or is/are there a directory(ies) at another site(s) that I should specify as the source of the files? Problem booting 2.6.30-rc5 kernel

Good morning! I know I'm on the bleeding edge, but I'm having trouble getting the 2.6.30-rc5 kernel to boot on my CentOS 5.3 box. It's a dual-socket Nehalem box with the Tylersburg chipset (Supermicro board). I installed CentOS 5.3 on it with no problems - boots and runs fine. But I wanted to take a look at the 2.6.30-rc5 kernel and try out some new stuff. After a few go around's with 2.6.30-rc5 the closest I can get it to boot is that I receive the following typing from my notes, so please excuse my typos): Red Hat nash version 5.1.19.6 starting insmod : error inserting '/lib/dm-region-hash.ko' : -1 File exists Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while... Volume gruop "VolGroup00" not found mount: could not find filesystem '/dev/root' setuproot: moving /dev failed: No such file or directory setuproot: error mounting /proc: No such file or directory setuproot: error mounting /sys: No such file or directory setuproot: mount failed: No such file or directory Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! I think this all boils down to the missing module. But I can't seem to find it in the 2.6.30-rc5 kernel. Any ideas? Thanks! Jeff

What I had from start was a working CentOS 5.3 32b system. What I did was to just add another empty drive configured as slave and then boot from the Windows install cd. The most curious thing happened now, I get a blank screen after the Windows installer screen saying something about "Setting up install procedure..." just at the beginning. That is to say, this happens only if the hd with CentOS is connected to power. If I disconnect the power connector to the CentOS drive, the Windows installer happily goes on. Is this to be expected, that Windows won't install if it sees a hd with another OS as master? if no NFS server clients are waiting..

What can I do, If the NFS server is rebooting/offline? I mean the clients just wait and wait and wait... I tried to set timeo=5,retrans=2 mount options when mounting nfs in fstab on client side = still no luck, clients are just waiting... Can I set a timeout somewhere? :D Thank you for any tips

Find the `spiff' utility. It will compare files word by word and highlight ONLY the word differences. One can also compare numbers and change the resolution of the comparison. Postfix: user unknown

Dear all, I have a mail server based on a CentOS 5.3 machine with postfix. Most of our users are on LDAP (on localhost) but we also have some local users and we are using PAM for authentication. Remote Desktop on CentOS 5.3

Does anyone have remote desktop connectivity working in CentOS 5.3? I'm using the Gnome desktop and have configured the Remote Deskop Preferences to "Allow other users to view your desktop" and "Allow other users to control your desktop". The configuration dialog box says that "Users can view your desktop using this command: vncviewer HOSTNAME.domain.com:0". However, when I try to connect to it from another host, I always get a "Connection reset by peer" error message. I've tried various different clients an operation systems, and I get the same result. I disabled the firewall completely for this test (service iptables stop) so I know it's not a firewall issue. Then again, I don't see a vncserver process running either, so that may be the issue. This was working on CentOS 5.2. What do I need to do to access my existing desktop on my CentOS 5.3 system remotely? I don't need to use VNC, but I do want to access the existing session and not a separate desktop (i.e., by starting a vncserver process). Thanks, Alfred

File compare word by word

Is there a utility that compares files word by word, instead of whole lines or single bytes? I found that I can simulate this by replacing all the spaces in a file with linefeeds, then 'diff -B' the results, but that's kind of awkward and hard to read when differences that matter come up. (For the record, I tried using OOo's document comparer, converting to text and using diff, and a few others, but none of them worked. I used to think that running text files through fmt would help, but fmt is strangely inconsistent as to where it breaks lines, even when the content within a line or two is identical.) Thanks. mhr

Calendar server

Hi Ralph I received this e-mail from Fedora Infrastructure list. My problem at that moment was a proper syntax for the jigdo-file command. Using the their script as reference, I made a simpler one to test the command[1]. LVM, SATA controllers and BIOS devices

So I have an issue with CentOS 5.3 i386, LVM, and SATA. Boot device is a 200GB ATA disk on hda2. I've added a couple of disks with the on-the-mobo SATA controller ports and grown the EXT3 fs with system-config-lvm. Then, as an experiment, I added a PCI SATA controller and an additional disk. Ran system-config-lvm, added the new space to the existing VolGroup00, and all was good. Feeling confident, I shut the box down and plugged another disk in to the PCI SATA controller. On reboot, I was greeted with a kernel panic since the OS could not find "really-long-label." Removing the new SATA disk did not fix the issue. Digging about a bit with the box booted from CD in rescue mode, it appears that the LVM filesystem is intact, but the BIOS device letters (sda, sdb, sdc, etc) are scrambled in the LVM configuration somehow. After running "lvm pv<something>" I figured out that the BIOS drive letters currently assigned don't match what's in /etc/lvm/backup, archive, and so on. Obviously there's some way to read the VolGroup info from the disks, since "linux rescue" can mount the volume VolGroup00. I've tired vgrestore, but I'm still getting a kernel panic on boot from disk. What's the best way to get the LVM/BIOS config sorted out so that the system can boot up? Thanks for any hints. --Chris

High CPU usage by lftp

Greetings, I have written a script using lftp to mirror one directory from a ftp site. I do not have access to the server except for being a humble user. This is running on a fully updated Centos 5.3 box. I am using whatever is provided by the repositories. I noticed that lftp consumes almost all of cpu times I found this while searching for a solution. http://www.mail-archive.com/lftp%40uniyar.ac.ru/msg02101.html Could it be this reason? if its not has anybody else observed what I have described? iso creation with dd

I placed a CD in a drive. I ran sudo dd sudo dd if=/dev/cdrom of=HMI_B_Image_File_4-23-09_disk_1.iso It completed. I then transferred the ISO file to an XP machine, use Sonic to burn the ISO file to another CD, and there was a file missing (the largest) in the burned CD. Seems like the data got transferred through the dd, but not a file name. What might I be doing wrong? === Al

CentOS 5.2 nVidia GeForce 7300GS resolution problem

I have a Gigabyte nVidia GeForce 7300GS on an Intel DG965WHMKR mobo attached to an LG Flatron LG204WT widescreen monitor. I'm driving the monitor at 1680*1050, and the picture is compressed into the right-hand two-thirds of the screen. The monitor is OK as it's attached via a KVM switch to another machine - also with an nVidia card - and it displays perfectly on that. It looks like some sort of scan rate problem - anyone experienced this? If so, anyone know the solution? TIA -- Dick Holland

There's a debian specific flag for ssh called 'ServerTimeOut' which allows ssh to give up if no data from the server is received for the specified number of seconds. Does anybody know the equivalent option for centos-ssh? thanks, grace

svnsync not using config dir

Hello: I tried posting this to the subversion mailing list, but that does not seem to be taking the post so I am hoping this list can help. I am using svnsync installed using yum on my CentOS 5 server. I am trying to tell the sync command to save the certificates and credentials in a directory, but it does not seem to be doing so. I created a directory /usr/local/svn/MyProject.config To run the sync, I used this command: /usr/bin/svnsync sync https://svn2.jammconsulting.com/svn/MyProject --config-dir /usr/local/svn/MyProject.config --username svnsync When I issue the command, it asks me to accept the certificate. I told it to accept permanently and gave the svnsync password when prompted. But, nothing was saved in the config directory and when I issue the command again, it still asks me to accept the certificate and the password for the svnsync user account. is it possible to resive a PV in LVM and add more LV's ?

It's got a 500GB HDD, but the PV is only 10GB big, so I can't add more LV's to to. P.S. This is on LVM, btw. alsamixer and multiple audio cards

When I run kmix, there is a drop-down box in the upper right corner that lets me choose the audio device that kmix will be adjusting. If, however, I try to use alsamixer instead of kmix, there is only one (default) device that I can adjust. How can I tell to alsamixer that I want to adjust the volume of another card? 1) What exactly happens when I press the "reload audio drivers" button? I want a command-line analogue, so that I can do it remotely, via ssh (and no X forwarding). 2) How to manually set the order of sound cards and the default one, again using only command line, as I would do in the GUI of system-config-soundcard? 3) Why don't the settings made there stick? I have three to four sound devices (two pci and one or two usb, depending on what is plugged in), and on every reboot cards tend to get shuffled and the wrong one is typically the default. 3) Is there maybe a system-config-soundcard-tui or something equivalent which would make my life easier and make the first two questions obsolete? 4) Why there is no man page for system-config-soundcard? How to run command as apache?

Hello: I have a subversion repository set up in /usr/local/svn/MyProject. For security, I have that directory set to apache as the owner and group and all files are mode 700. I need to run a svnsync command as the apache user so it may write to the repository. I tried this command: su apache -c "/usr/bin/svnsync sync https://svn2.jammconsulting.com/svn/MyProject" But I get this message from the su command: This account is currently not available. I am guessing this happens because the apache account is set with no password and a nologin shell. How can I run a command as the apache user? Best mobile SSH client?

I'm up for a cell phone contract renewal and am considering upgrading my handset. I looked at some devices at my local AT&T store but nothing really jumped out at me. I'm particularly interested in a cell phone that has a reliable ssh client, with ssh-agent and public key authentication abilities. Those of you who administer systems remotely, what mobile ssh client do you recommend? What phone would you recommend?
