problem with updates

Using Centos 5.2 and the "Software Updater/Package Updater/pup", I winnowed the problem updates down to six packages: 1: Updated file packages available 2: Updated gcc43 packages available 3: Updated gcc packages available 4: Updated pam packages available 5: Updated redhat-logos packages available 6: Updated redhat-menus packages available It'd really help if there was a button on pup to deselect all updates (and let me click just a few updates back on). The problem is typically... Updated file packages available Component: pirut Summary: TBe8ae967a sqlitesack.py:94:_read_db_obj:TypeError: unsubscriptable object As a result, /usr/share/gdm/themes/TreeFlower/background.png is missing, and so I get an error message about it and the "default" login screen. Software RAID resync

OT: Photo Editor to reduce 272 photos to VGA at once

I returned from Bogotá and have a Folder with 272 photos that total 419.9 MB. I would like to email them to several people who were there for the concerts I attended. I have Picasa, gThumb (not really an Editor but I believe it can reduce the quality of photos) and The GIMP installed. Is there a way I can have a photo editor reduce all of them to VGA size, without doing that 272 times? The people who will receive them are using M$ Windoze. Also, they are in a folder and it doesn't seem possible to attach a folder in gmail. A good way to zip them up in one file that can be unzipped on Windoze boxes? TIA! P.S. I met people there who participate in the forum for my favorite singer. I suspect it would be equally interesting, to meet many of the people who participate in this Mailing List.

Local yum mirror and repomd.xml

Hey, So, I'm having a minor issue. Today, I configured one of our CentOS systems to use our local mirror (mirror.clarkson.edu) for its repositories. After doing this, I ran a yum update and received the following warning in the output along with the updates available: Not using downloaded repomd.xml because it is older than what we have: Current : Thu May 7 14:41:57 2009 Downloaded: Tue Apr 28 05:04:32 2009 In order to get rid of this error, I ran "yum clean all" and then "yum update" again. This results in the warning no longer being present but also results in yum telling me there are no packages marked for update. Any thoughts on why this is occuring? I've posted my mirror configuration at the bottom of the page. stale dm-multipath mappings

Greetings, I've hit this exact 'bug': https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=491311 I need to remove the mappings manually. I assume this is done via 'multipath -F' followed by a 'multipath -v2' ? Has anyone experienced doing this on a production system? We can do it during hours of low activity, but we would prefer to keep the databases on this host online at the time. kghostview and xdg-open. Need to fix problem across whole system

In Centos 5.3, a bad problem has surfaced in user land. We want to use either Evince or Adobe acroread as the pdf view, but the update of kdegraphics has somehow screwed up these systems so that the odious, horrible, awful pdf viewer kghostview is used. It is what you get when you doubleclick on pdf files, it is what programs get when they try to use xdg-open framework. This happens even though xdg-open seems to think it is pointing at Adobe. $ xdg-mime query filetype manual.pdf application/pdf $ xdg-mime query default application/pdf AdobeReader.desktop I've had it happen before that users make mistakes and then the mime types are accidentally re-defined in the user accounts. I have not had it happen across all users accounts that something goes so wrong. How can I tell the Gnome mime system to always use evince for opening pdf, not kghostview? What's wrong with xdg-open? Ghostscript in 5.3

Ever since I updated to 5.3, I have been unable to convert any ps files to pdfs using the ps2pdf command. Apache and CF

Hi All, I have a CentoS 5.3 Xen Instance at Mosso. I need to run ColdFusion and I have in the past successfully made everything work, but not on Linux rather Windows. I just cannot get Apache and CF talking. I added mod_jrun22, When I try to serve a CF file, I am asked to download binary data. I added .cfm and .cfml to Directory Index for /var/www/html in httpd.conf and nothing still. I have been trying to get this working for days. If anyone has a bit of free time, I can pay about $25. (Sorry, trying to get launched so my llc can make money). If anyone would trade 'services' can offer copies of our peoducts when they go live or some CF dev. -Jason

Strange problem with filesystem changes reverting on reboot

Our sysadmin was doing midnight work on moving some hardware to new power outlets. We'd recently done a CentOS 5.3 install on one of those machines and then "yum install" with the centosplus kernel and some rpmforge packages. It had been up and running fine for at least two weeks in that configuration. He sent this message: On reboot the root file system seems to have reverted to the previous startup -- no CentOS plus, no Dag repository info in /etc/yum.repos.d, no xfs, and therefore no /var/lib/mysql. This is at least the second time we've experienced this phenomenon ... suffice to say I am really really suspicious about ext3 now. The previous time this occurred was quite some time ago, probably soon after the CentOS 5.1 release -- we'd written it off as pilot error of some kind. The root is not an LVM, but it is on a software RAID -- my suspicion leans more toward a RAID issue than ext3. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone?

SSH problems - command not found

Hi All, I have a strange problem with ssh on CentOS 5.3: 1. I make a ssh connection from computer X to Y => OK 2. When i try to conect from Y to Z i receive a strange message: -bash: ssh: command not found (normal and root user) #which sshd /usr/sbin/sshd The sshd daemon it's on (see nr.1) So connection to Y it's OK, but from Y to another computer don't. Even back to X don't work Any advice? Thank you! P.S - sorry for my bad english

Hi, I'm trying to troubleshoot a problem with an application, and I need the debuginfo RPMs for gcc. (The symbols for libstdc++ are in there.) I recently upgraded one machine to CentOS 5.3, and this installed gcc-4.1.2-44.el5. Rosewill RSV-S8 Storage Enclosure Support

I'm trying to get RSV-S8 working with Citrix XenServer 5 update 3 (which I believe runs CentOS 5.something). I have the Rosewill card that comes with it in there (sil3132 based). It's seeing the card, and seeing all my drives. I fdisk the drives and I can create the partitions, but I am unable to set up either software raid or create filesystems. I keep getting errors saying that the volumes are in use (although they do not appear to be mounted anywhere). # mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdc1 mke2fs 1.39 (29-May-2006) /dev/sdc1 is apparently in use by the system; will not make a filesystem here! # mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=0 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 mdadm: Cannot open /dev/sdb1: Device or resource busy mdadm: Cannot open /dev/sdc1: Device or resource busy mdadm: create aborted Am I doing something wrong or is it possibly an issue with the driver? 5.3 on an EeePC??

I have an ASUS EeePC 701 (with 2GB of RAM and an 8 GB card), on which I've installed CentOS on the hard-drive-plus-card. But it can't even use my eth0. Some one on a local LUG, where I had mentioned that other OSs did fine with all the same exact hardware, suggested that CentOS, being designed for stability rather than the bleeding edge, likely lacks drivers; so I need to get some. Why??? Hmmm "This will wipe your drive." normally means what it says it wipes your drive to be honest if it was me then I would skip centos and go for the uhuntu, it's designed for the netbook and from what I hear i runs like the clappers on the netbook. GFS and Small Files

Hi all, We are running CentOS 5.2 64bit as our file server. Currently, we used GFS (with CLVM underneath it) as our filesystem (for our multiple 2TB SAN volume exports) since we plan to add more file servers (serving the same contents) later on. The issue we are facing at the moment is we found out that command such as 'ls' gives a very slow response.(e.g 3-4minutes for the outputs of ls to be printed out, or in certain cases, 20minutes or so) This is completely true especially in directories containing "large number" of small files (e.g 90000+ of 1-4kb files). The thing is, most of system users are generating these small files frequently as part of their workflow. We tried emulating the same scenario (90000+ of small files) on a ext3 partition and it gives almost the same result. I believe most of the CLVM/GFS settings done are using the defaults parameters. Additionally, we would prefer to stick to GFS (or at least ext3) as it is part of CentOS / RHEL distribution rather than changing into other small-files 'friendly' filesystems (such as XFS, ReiserFS). I'm exploring whether is there anyway we can tune the GFS parameters to make the system more responsive? I have read that we can apply 'dir_index' option to ext3 partition to speedup things, but I'm not so sure about GFS. Postfix Questions

Hi All, I am working on setting up Postfix and I have a few questions: 1. mynetworks = Do I put my public static IP here? So I am hosting at another provider on my own dedicated hardware. Do I put that machines IP or the IP of my apartment where I want to access from? Second, do I have to know the Ip information for my BlackBerry to work as well? 2. relaying: Obviously I dont want to be an open relay, but I do what to send mail from my apartment and from my Blackberry. apache slow on lan transfers?

When I download a file from apache on the lan (gigabit lan), I only get 3-4mbps of download speed, opposed to accessing the file via FTP or SMB which results in 500+ mbps of transfer speed. As far as I know, I'm running the stock apache (httpd) that is distributed with centos 5.3, and haven't changed anything in the config file with the exception of setting up various virtual directories. I'm hoping someone can give me pointers on what I need to search for to research this problem. Apache + slow + lan isn't really getting me anywhere. The apache process itself on the server doesn't even register 1% of cpu usage, and iowait is 0% All suggestions are appreciated, Gordon

Rsync/SSH automation problem?

Hi All, I have a win2k3 server that its backing up to a CentOS 5.3 server. On the Win2k3 machine I plan to have rsync back up nightly to the CentOS server through ssh. The command I am using is as follows: rsync -vrPtz -e ssh myuser@myserver:/remote/backup/folder/ /local/backup/folder/ This all works great for the inital test except its prompts me for a password for "myuser" (as you would except) but how can I embed the password for ssh into the command line? Or can I not? Is the following some how possible: rsync -vrPtz -e ssh myuser@myserver mypassword /remote/backup/folder/ /local/backup/folder/ Or something like that? I can't find anything that says it is possible so its probably isn't but I know that some of you out there have far superior searching skills than I or hopefully, you might already know? Assuming this isn't possible as I've got that gut feeling it won't be, does anyone else have a better idea? Web Serving

Hi All, My quest is going slowly but surely and I am learning a lot. I use ColdFusion. I installed in on My CentOS 5.3 instance and all was well. I added: DirectoryIndex index.html index.html.var index.php index.cfm index.cfml to httpd.conf and restarted. I put an index.cfm page in /var/www/html and removed the standard index.html and I can see when I hit my IP it works. I then created virtual hosts for a few coldfusion websites in httpd.conf and added the directories to /var/www/html One thing I notice is the owner/group is 501 and games like: drwxr-xr-x 5 501 games 4096 Apr 25 23:57 www_sheldony_com Is this normal? I just did a simply mkdir statement. Did I screw something up? And when I try to hit an index.cfm page Firefox prompts me to download binary data. When I try to hit the CF Administrator I get the same 'binary' data file download. I am running CF on port 80 as I need to. Inotify or equivalent

I installed inotify and incrond to watch a directory and set the job as '/mnt/dir IN_ATTRIB chmod 0660 $@/$#' which worked very well except that as expected, IN_ATTRIB is to broad of a watch class as it caused an enormous amount of contention with the filemonitor and/or db server and the client side app was less than happy. Not to mention top showed it working away like mad... Is there any way to look for permission changes only, or something else that might work? Thanks! jlc

Server test suite

Hi, I have an interest in software that will allow me to define test suites for servers. We have several thousand Linux systems, and after we build or rebuild each one, we have a checklist. I am trying to automate this checklist, and ideally have it run against all of our servers on a regular basis and report inconsistencies. Is anyone aware of open-source software that will do this, or do I need to write my own? --Russell

I am trying to get esata working. my lspci is below. When I plug in the disk an turn it on - dmesg reports nothing. Is it supposed to report anything like a usb disk does? Is there a module to load? Defaults of CentOS Install not working with SELinux

Following a hard drive corruption I have reinstalled the latest version of CentOS and all current patch files. For most applications I selected the default options. By doing this I expected that the packages would play nice with one another and I could customize as necessary. Setting SELinux to enforce I encountered all sorts of problems - but most were resolvable, save for Dovecot, Procmail (for spamc), and an odd one with Apache. Given that these were all installed with the CentOS install defaults, I can't believe I am the only one with these issues but finding a solution has not been self evident. Hoping someone here can help. For Dovecot I get the following: SELinux is preventing dovecot (dovecot_t) "create" to <Unknown> (dovecot_t). For complete SELinux messages. run sealert -l e1b070ab-586a-4c5a-befe-b6a46b9ab992 For procmail I get the following: SELinux is preventing procmail (procmail_t) "execute" to ./spamc (spamc_exec_t). For complete SELinux messages. run sealert -l 0a554689-4948-4edf-9964-dddbfe6a2492 SELinux is preventing sh (procmail_t) "read" to ./spamc (spamc_exec_t). For complete SELinux messages. run sealert -l 1f1ebd83-412d-4e93-a36f-6f3d34c663df For Apache it's even more strange - When started I get: Syntax error on line 283 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf DocumentRoot must be directory But it is a directory, has the correct permissions and I have even run chcon -R -h -t httpd_sys_content_t /web/www/ in an effort to correct the problem. I run a virtual server too, and in trying to find a fix for this that may be a problem - but first things first. All the other issues I had I could resolve when I ran the specified "sealert" tag and followed the suggested instructions - but those above don't budge. When I go to the fedora.redhat.com/docs/selinux-fq- fc5 site to take on making a local policy module I am quickly getting lost . The option to simply disable SElinux with respect to Apache, Dovecote or anything else is suggested - but not something I see in the GUI window, and I have not figured out how to do it from the command line. Again, because these are default packages, I hope that someone else knows how to resolve these. Directory and File Perms

I have a directory shared out via Samba for Quickbooks and seem to have some issues with permissions. The directory being shared is a subdirectory in an ext3 partition being mounted with the acl option. It has been setup as follows: chown root:DOMAIN\AD_Group /mnt/Intuit_Data/ chmod 2770 /mnt/Intuit_Data/ And the Samba share config is has: create mask = 0660 directory mask = 0770 So when a user creates a file from their Windows box through Explorer or any other app, it gets perms as you might expect: -rw-rw---- 1 Domain+jcasale DOMAIN+AD_Group 0 Apr 29 14:24 test.txt and it can be deleted by anyone. Problem is QB uses gamin and this file monitoring daemon runs as root and all sorts of changes take place as you work with the data, from creating the company file to editing it in QB, it ends up slowly changing to 0400? Edit init scripts for that daemon? I don't know what would happen if it doesn't run as root, but maybe as a user that has GID of DOMAIN+AD_Group? Thanks for any ideas! jlc
