Hi I have small query, all our server are centos based 5 and 5.2 . We are looking ofr a tool to that measure packet loss. we have servers in two IDC's bothin the US and we are trying to download a 2gb file from the internet. Some server are able to download the file at a higher b/w rate in one IDC ...while servers at he the other IDC download the same file at a lowe b/w rate . Is ther any tool to measure packet losses. Hi All, I am new to CentOS and I signed up for a Mosso Cloud Server that runs Cent OS 5.2 I can ssh in. I ran: yum install vnc vnc-server then: vncserver (and set desktop viewing password) But I cannot connect. How do I add 5900 to the centos firewall? How do I edit the conf file? I only have SSH ability at this point... -jason

FTP transfer file question??

php-mcrypt from c5-testing is the wrong version

Hello all, I am using the c5-testing repo to fetch PHP 5.2.6 and related libraries, required for the LAMP apps that I want to use. php-mcrypt still seems to come from the extras repo and is version 5.1.6 and the php binary doesn't load this module. Has anyone seen output like this before? Notice on my /dev/md0 That it reports 100% used, but also 5.3 Gb available. Hi, I am creating CentOS install usb keys and, apart from a few problems, it mostly works... 1. OT: My server HP does not seem to want to boot on it if I set the write protection on. 2. Anaconda tries to fetch the ks.cfg too early... It detects sda, then detects the RAID adapter, then re-detects sda with a "waiting for device to settle before scanning". Anaconda tries to access the ks.cfg file in the middle of this waiting. If, once the detection is over (just 2-3 seconds later), I retry, it works. 3. Error message "cannot mount read/write, will mount read-only" (I like to write protect) 4. OT: fs corruption ont he USB keys... I copy the iso file on the key (no error message), then compare it to the original and some random differences appear. I noticed in the logs: "ext2_new_block: Allocating block in system zone - block = 65536" "ext2_free_blocks: bit already cleared for block 88678" "ext2_free_blocks: Freeing blocks not in datazone - block = 3003818537, count = 1" Any idea how to fix 2. and 3. ? Update notification

CentOS 5.3 New updates available used to be flagged in the (Gnome) desktop notification area, but I don't get them any longer. What could be the problem? yum-updatesd is set up with the default configuration (dbus), and on the machines I changed the notification to email, I do indeed receive these emails.

Dell mirror raid boot problems

Everyone, I was recently given a Dell raid 386 server that had drives that had gone bad. I replaced the drives with a couple terrabyte sata Seagate drives, and set up the bios for a mirrored raid configuration. I was able to install Centos 5.2 without difficulty, but when it was time to perform the 1st boot it went to grub instead of booting off of one of the mirrored drives. I could not figure out how to boot through grub, so I changed the bios to look at both drives unmirrored. At that point I was able to boot to one of the drives, and the second drive was not mounted. The raid logic is within the bios and mother board of the Dell machine. Can any of you point me to some literature about making this system work as a mirrored raid system. Thanks, -- Greg Ennis

Wake On LAN

Hey Listees I can not work out how to get my Dell NF500 III server to use wake on LAN using the on board Broadcom NetExtreme II BCM5708 NIC card? I'm running Cent OS 5.3 final (i386). Basically, If I had windows server 2k3 installed I know that the cards & mobo etc support WOL I would just have to tick a little box under the NIC card properties saying "allow wake on LAN" (or words to that affect). How can I enable WOL for my NIC card? I have two identical servers so I have tried putting one to sleep (via either setting the hibernate time down to 5 mins and waiting for it to time out and hibernate or by running the following as root: echo shutdown > /sys/power/disk; echo disk > /sys/power/state) and waking it up with ether-wake and WOL (an rpm package) but neither worked, also with a windows WOL client from a windows server which I know works as it is regularly in use but the system didn't come up. The light is glowing green on the mobo just next to the two on board NIC's (both are the same BCM5708's); the light is on but nobodies home? What setting might I be missing within CentOS its self to keep the cards alive when the power is out? Any help is greatly appreciated. USB device not connected (CentOS 5.3)

I just tried this with CentOS 5.3 as well, and got exactly the same symptoms and dmesg output. (As a point of comparison, Ubunu 8.04 on my work laptop is able to access the drive.) Obviously "not detected" is a misapprehension, though I'm puzzled why "lsusb" doesn't show it. USB device not detected (CentOS 4.7)

I recently purchased an I/O Magic USB enclosure for 3.5" IDE hard drive. Has anyone else used one of these? It works fine with Windows, except of course that Windows can't read the ext2 partitions on the disk I put into the enclosure. CentOS4 can't find the device, much less access the drive -- it doesn't show up in "lsusb" output, although the active light on the enclosure is on solid. I have other USB external drives (Maxtor OneTouch and WD MyBook) that work with CentOS4. Suggestions appreciated.

Package Updater problems

Hello! I'm afraid that I don't understand redhat's bugzilla -- there's an approx 10-character wide box for reporting the bug and it always claims that that's not a bug. I'm sure I'm missing something. Anyway, here's the problems: Using Centos 5.2 and the "Software Updater/Package Updater/pup", I winnowed the problem updates down to six packages: 1: Updated file packages available 2: Updated gcc43 packages available 3: Updated gcc packages available 4: Updated pam packages available 5: Updated redhat-logos packages available 6: Updated redhat-menus packages available I set it up so that the package updater should only try to handle one update, and I repeated this six times, once per problem update. Is there a reason why after a software raid install (from kickstart) that md1 is always unclean. md0 seems fine. boot screen says md1 is dirty and cat /proc/mdstat show md1 as being rebuilt. Any ideas? Unless you have a very high performance disk controller/drives, you'll usually find that it cannot keep up with initial format of the array, then the subsequent dumping of data to it during installation. Upon reboot, it'll simply restart the sync process and finish happily. I've seen this on nearly every md RAID1 system I install on. --Tim

Reset audio controller w/o rebooting?

As I mentioned on a thread about flash-plugin a few days ago, I'm having trouble with my sound device getting "stuck" and thereby causing problems for anything that accesses it, like video playback. Rebooting the machine "fixes" it for a while, but it's unpredictable for how long -- sometimes months go by without it recurring, sometimes it happens every couple of days. Right now I'm in one of the latter phases. Any suggestions on how I could reset the controller without having to reboot? (Or suggestions for where else I might ask this question?) Port Forwarding woes

I'm having some port forwarding issues issues with iptables. We are using iptables as a firewall with 2 nics and on ip alias. I'm trying to port forward on the alias ip eth0 = 65.x.x.1 eth0:1 = 65.x.x.2 eth1 = 192.168.x.x I'm wanting to forward certain ports(80,5071...etc) that makes request on eth0:1 IP 65.x.x.2 to forward to internal IP 192.168.x.x. I have setup the following rules but I must be doing something wrong. iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp -i eth0 -d 65.x.x.2 --dport 80 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.x.x:80 iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp -i eth0 -d 65.x.x.2 --dport 5071 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.x.x:5071 iptables -A FORWARD -p tcp -i eth0 -d 192.168.x.x --dport 80 -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -p tcp -i eth0 -d 192.168.x.x --dport 5071 -j ACCEPT Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a Cisco 6509 switch that I'm monitoring with SNMP from a CentOS5 machine. SNMP polls are the only access I have to this device, we are not allowed to log on via telnet. How can I find out which port on the switch a particular server is connected to? I was hoping that this is somehow possible using the mac address and the data gathered from snmpwalk/snmpget requests but I'm not having much luck. How would you tackle this problem?

Hi all I am using cents 5.3 on a gigabyte motherboard MA78GM-US2H. When installing centos using kickstart I get prompted to load a driver. I select the ata_piix driver and everything continues as normal. Is there a way in kickstart or the boot command prompt line to specify loading the ata_piix module automatically? Why isnt the kernel loading it automatically? I dont recall having to ever do that before in 5.2 Thanks, Jerry

However i got the impression it was something in the same category like tinyca or pyca. Perhaps it is based on the code of RHCS, and all documentation is just some wiki pages. eth0 killed when adding virtual interface and multiple NICs are present

I have a strange problem on one machine where eth0 gets killed when I add a virtual interface. It's got something to do with the NIC ordering or with the xen network script having a problem with multiple NICs and virtual interfaces. I could need some help/comments on this. Some history: I added a NIC (chip identifies as Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet) to a Dell R200 server. CentOS 5.3 with Xen 3.3.1 (gitco repo). eth0 and eth1 are the built-in NICs, this is then eth2 (or it should be). Works. Everything is fine until I add a virtual interface to eth0 and reboot. I can add eth0:1 at runtime just fine. But if I let it stay in network-scripts and boot the whole eth0 is killed (doesn't show up in ifconfig and doesn't work). A network restart brings it up as if nothing is wrong. I first thought it might have something to do with the fact that eth0 is actually a bridge on Xen > 3.2 and tried the same config on another machine and there it works. It's not the exact same xen version, not 64bit and it's got only 1 NIC. So there are differences, but it seems to rule out the bridge as a cause. I then checked the logs more thoroughly and found that CentOS changes the NIC initialization order at boot-time. Without the third NIC it's eth0=NIC1 and eth1=NIC2 (as shown on the chassis). But with the third NIC it's most often that one that goes first. Here's a typical excerpt from messages. tigon/tg3 is the driver for the internal NICs which normally were on eth0 and eth1. Well, it seems this wasn't a problem until I added a virtual interface to eth0. When the eth interfaces are brought up the system seems to reenumerate the eth numbering according to the HWADDR matches and thus eth0=NIC1 and so on. As soon as I add a virtual interface to eth0 this breaks and all of eth0 is killed. At least that's what I figure. So, the next obvious question is: How can I set a fixed order, so that NIC1 is always brought up first as eth0? I'm not sure if this would fix it, though. I have done too few reboots yet, but it seems that at least once I got the "correct" initialization order but eth0 got killed, anyway. So, it might not be the order but still something in the Xen script which happens only when multiple NICs are present and a virtual interface is added. Any thoughts so far? Antivirus for CentOS? (yuck!)

Hi All, Yes, I know, it's really really embarrassing to have to ask but I'm being pushed to the wall with PCI DSS Compliance procedure (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_DSS) and have to either justify why we don't need to install an anti-virus or find an anti-virus to run on our CentOS 5 servers. Whatever I do - it needs to be convincing enough to make the PCI compliance guy tick the box. So: 1. Has anyone here gone though such a procedure and got good arguments against the need for anti-virus? 2. Alternatively - what linux anti-virus (oh, the shame of typing this word combination :() do you use which doesn't affect our systems performance too much. The reviewed servers run both Internet-facing web applications and internal systems, mostly using proprietary protocol for internal communications. They are being administrated remotely via IPSec VPN (and possibly in the future also OpenVPN). Thanks, --Amos

I found it in EPEL, but they have version 2.1.7, which is over a year old according to what I found on the modsecurity.org website. Is there a repository which is keeping this up to date? Problems eith yum (wrong releasever)

After installing clean Centos 5.3 and updating with "yum update" yum starts to fail. I get the following error message YumRepo Error: All mirror URLs are not using ftp, http[s] or file. Eg. 7 is not a valid release or hasnt been released yet/ removing mirrorlist with no valid mirrors: //var/cache/yum/base/mirrorlist.txt It looks like the $releasever variable has value 7. Thx, kfx Hi, We are experiencing the same issue, however using Apache and Tomcat via Proxy AJP to server a Shibboleth IdP on CentOS 5.3 - stock RPMs. httpd-2.2.3-22.el5.centos tomcat5-5.5.23-0jpp.7.el5_2.1 Since upgrading to 5.3 we have noticed that overnight all 4GB of physical RAM and all 4GB of swap is eaten and the web service unresponsive. We can still SSH into the machine and restart Apache. This rectifies the issue. These are production boxes and subject to numerous connections, we are trying to isolate the trigger. However, the exact same configuration and applications being served under 5.2 exhibit no issue. Quick Q: while running my A.M. update today, I see several updates that I haven't seen announced yet. The one concerning me is glibc. I killed the update since it glibc is so central to a system. Is it safe to install? If so, I presume I'll want to update it first and then the rest of the system? TIA for any information. -- Bill

Anyone had sucess on made netdisco running? > Hi List, Well nothing better than post an email to the list to find the solution: The install script I was using (following) from the site above, put two include lines (from netdisco_apache.conf and netdisco_apache_dir.conf) on the end of "/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf". But it generates some errors on the httpd programa, and I moved them to links on "/etc/httpd/conf.d" to the netdisco config files. The problem was "netdisco*" was load before "perl*" and then the errors. Quick solution: rename "netdisco*" to "zz_netdisco*", now the load order are OK and the WebCli are running. Grub configuration from within Windows

My friend uses a typical dual-boot setup (Windows XP and Centos 5.3). The machine is online 24/7 and he often uses it from a remote location (Linux via ssh -X, Windows via rdesktop). The problem is that he wants to be able to remotely configure which of these two OSes is to be the default on next reboot, so he can switch from one OS to the other and back remotely. If Linux is up, he just needs to reconfigure grub.conf, but if Windows is up (and default) he has no way of accessing grub.conf. Now, he has several partitions on the drive, some ntfs, some vfat and some ext3. Is there a clean way of putting grub.conf on a vfat partition? Is there a way for Windows to have rw access to ext3 filesystem (namely, /)? Is there some other way of handling this without physical access to the machine while it boots? I have suggested virtualization of Windows, so he could run them both concurrently without pain, but for certain (computational performance) reasons that is not a good option for him --- he wants hard reboots between OSes. pdf helper application

What package needs loaded so when I click on a PDF in thunderbird that the pdf viewer opens up. This worked back in 5.2 but doesnt seem like the same package has been loaded in 5.3 If I same the file then use "evince file.pdf" that works - just a couple extra steps. Jerry

mock %post(pam) failure

I recently upgraded an internal build server from C5.2 to C5.3 and now I'm experiencing problems initializing the mock buildroot. Specifically, I'm getting the following error: ------ /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.77062: line 6: cat: command not found /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.77062: line 7: rm: command not found /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.77062: line 22: install: command not found /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.77062: line 25: install: command not found error: %post(pam-0.99.6.2-4.el5.i386) scriptlet failed, exit status 127 ------ Googling has revealed that Fedora had a similar problem about a year ago, but doesn't reveal what to do about it. Apparently there is a circular dependency between pam and coreutils. For some reason yum has recently decided to install pam before coreutils. Has anyone else seen this? More importantly, does anyone have any tips how to resolve or work around the issue?

Mount Openfiler created XFS volumes

Greetings, I have a 500Gig hdd with and XFS filesystem created by openfiler (which strangely switched from lovely CentOS for reasons best known to them). I fired up a Centos box with this hdd. I then did yum install kmod-xfs.i686 xfsdump.i386 dmapi xfsprogs and it wnt through. But when I try to mount this volume mount -t xfs /dev/hdd1 /mnt/test I get the error: mount: /dev/hdd1 already mounted or /mnt/test busy I then try xfs_admin -l /dev/hdd1 The results being: xfs_admin: unexpected XFS SB magic number 0x00000000 xfs_admin: read failed: Invalid argument xfs_admin: data size check failed cache_node_purge: refcount was 1, not zero (node=0xa058670) xfs_admin: cannot read root inode (22) label = "(null)" Sure I'm missing something very basic here... Can somebody point my mistake? and some clues to solve this problem... TIA Regards Rajagopal
