As noted in other replies, Windows not not play well with anything else. Your best bet would be to disable/remove/disconnect the drive with CentOS and then do the Windows install to the other drive. Once Windows is installed, you can reconnect the CentOS drive and then easily edit grub.conf to boot Windows using the "chainloader" directive. This approach will only work if there are no primary partitions on the CentOS drive that Windows recognizes. Windows (just like DOS) assigns drive letters to partitions in drive number order starting with the primary partitions and then moving on to the extended partitions. The bottom line is that you want the first Windows partition on the non-CentOS drive to get assigned drive letter C: when Windows boots. As long as Windows doesn't recognize the partition type (e.g., ext3), no drive letter gets assigned. The problem with suggestions to just install Windows and then either use another boot loader or repair the grub installation is that you are stuck doing that work through Windows. My experience has been that Windows isn't as easy to work with for making changes to the boot loader and any approach that overwrites the Windows boot loader may leave you with Windows not being bootable. The approach I described above leaves the Windows boot loader in place although you may need to edit C:\boot.ini to make sure it can still find Windows when both disks are "present." Here is the grub.conf that I use on my laptop. The internal drive boots to either CentOS or Windows while Fedora 10 and Ubuntu are on an external USB drive. # grub.conf generated by anaconda # # Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file # NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. Yours would point to Windows on the "second" drive (probably hd1). Likewise, your boot.ini will need to point to Windows with something like: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP" changing to: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP" Note the change -----^ I'm assuming your Windows disk would end up being /dev/hdb in a Linux world. Even if there is something wrong with grub-install or grub in the live disk, dd is hardly affected. But, as I said, if you use two disks and pull the first out you do not have to reinstall/restore the MBR anyway. This is nonsense. You want to make a backup before changing it, just in case, but not because of the XP installation. After the installation you have to reinstall grub with "grub-install" (from a live disk) and add the chainloader stuff to grub.conf. mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/linux (if that is where you linux resides) grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/linux /dev/sda (if you want to install it to the partition use sda2 instead of sda, then the partition has to be active, so that you can boot from it) Instead of using grub-install you can backup the mbr before the installation and then restore it afterwards. These modules are File::Temp and Encode (core) cpan2rpm can package them OK, but there are fatal transaction check errors when installing. Mr. JV is the author of RT3 and DBIx::SearchBuilder. The SearchBuilder module also stopped me (briefly) with a dependency on DBD::Oracle. To grab this from CPAN requires the supporting Orable Libs. I altered the spec and removed any Oracle depends. These 3 issues were enough to cause me to give up. -- Mark

Sendmail forwarding external email sent to root

Hello: On a CentOS5 machine I set up for a client, in /etc/aliases, I set root's mail to forward to my email address so I can get notices from cron, etc. Unfortunately, I am now getting a lot of spam which is sent to root(a)theservername.com How can I tell sendmail to not accept external email to root? I searched the Internet and found some horribly convoluted solutions. There has to be a simple way to do this, like putting a line in sendmail.mc or something. Anyone know a good solution? SELinux errors on my CentOS 5.3 (32 bit) Desktop after upgrade from 5.2

I am running SELinux in Permissive mode. GNOME and KDE are installed. Following the upgrade from CentOS 5.2 to 5.3 (32 bit) I am getting SELinux messages. Sharing RAM between VM

Hi, all! I have a server with 4 virtual machines ( using xen). Is there a way to make them share RAM? I found out something about balloons, but it didn't distribute RAM dynamically. So I decided that xen can't achieve that. I tried luci and ricci and now all my VMs are in a cluster. But I don't think this actually helped. Can you suggest a software and/or manual or a question which I should ask google for completing this task? All doms/nodes are with Centos 5.3(final). Thanks!

rsync to full disk

I recently noticed that an "rsync -av" to a full disk keeps sending files even after the target is out of space. Has it always done that? Building a kernel without kabichk

I¹m trying to build a 2.6.18-128.1.6.el5 kernel without kabichk. I have downloaded the sources, installed the compiler, etc and ran the following command rpmbuild -bb --target=`uname -m` --without kabichk --with baseonly --without debug \ --without debuginfo kernel-2.6.spec. I had modified the .SPEC file according to the WIKI page http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Custom_Kernel I have NOT installed any patches that will break KABI, but I am wanting to patch the kernel for SCST, and that will do it. Currently, I¹m just trying to get the beast to build. I have been successful getting this to work on older versions like 2.6.18-92.1.22, but I have not had success with 128.1.6. l. I have not worried about build errors at this point, because I¹m hoping someone can say, ³Just do this, and all will be well.² I am relatively new to CentOS / RedHat, but I do have a significant amount of Linux experience building kernels. Using cdrecord on CentOS

Hi, I'd like to use cdrecord on the command line. I'm currently reading the relevant chapter in Carla Schroder's "Linux Cookbook". Unfortunately, some of the tricks and hints included in the book don't seem to work the same way on a standard CentOS 5 install. 1) Am I supposed to be root to use cdrecord and burn an .iso file? 2) How do I specify a device? 'cdrecord -scanbus' doesn't seem to work. Say my CD burner is /dev/hdc, would 'cdrecord dev=/dev/hdc' be the correct way to address it? Cheers, Niki

IO accounting

Just a general question to CentOS users, I'm curious if there is a supported or known working kernel newer than 2.6.20 that has IO accounting support. I know I could built it from source but I'd rather use a more tested one from a repo of some variety if possible. re-install package

I tried to install alsa 1.0.19 on centos 5.3 64 - did not work - compile errors. I need to re-install alsa-lib and alsa-util . I dont want to do rpm -e first on those packages as dependcy is crazy. I know they were installed (rpm -qa | grep alsa tells me so) I just want to re-install ? How do I do that? Thanks, Jerry

Hi, I know, epel has rt3 in version 3.6.x. And - sadly - for version 3.8.x the perl module dependencies are way ahead of what I can find in epel or rpmforge. But we really need some of the 3.8.x series features. So has anybody maybe built those modules + rt3 v3.8.x for C5? Any hint? I really do not want to install f10. :O Thx Rainer

I opened bug 494927 with Red Hat after seeing this kernel error on two different hosts, just a few days after updating or installing CentOS 5.3: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=494927 Has anyone else seen this yet? The patch that RH included in kernel-2.6.9-78.0.17.EL.src.rpm to fix the problem appears to have been in their 2.6.18 rpm since revision 15, so something else is apparently causing the same problem. I'm running bonnie++ in a loop on a VM running the affected kernel hoping to duplicate the problem.

Problem again with shockwave, or flash player (I think)...

Hi there, OK I thought I had this problem solved last week. Last week with help from this list, we installed the flash player on my Centos 5 desktop machine. But now when I go to cnbc, I am getting that same problem when trying to view vids on their site. So I click the icon where the empty video frame is to install the plugin, the "no suitable plugins were found" box come comes up again, so I click on the manual install button, and I am getting the "/tmp/adobe-release-i386-1.0-1.noarch-2.rpm is already installed" box again. On youtube however, or other sites, I can view vids, and I thought that the flash player was installed OK last week but some sites I still can't view videos. Any ideas what I can do? On Centos 4.x 32 I want to create like a 64Mbyte ramdisk. Is there a problem putting 30k to 80k empty files on a ramdisk? Is there a simple howto on creating a ramdisk that anyone knows of off the top of there head? Matt

httpd with SNI

Hi! I am currently publishing some web services on a Centos 5.3 server on my office using the included apache httpd. They are available from the Internet, and they require validation (username/password). I would like to publish them all under https, so the passwords won't travel unencrypted, but then all my sites use the same certificate on apache httpd. The solution to this is using an httpd server that supports SNI: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Server_Name_Indication> however, the httpd included in Centos does not have this feature. Question is: have anybody made httpd RPMs for CentOS supporting this feature? (according to the link, httpd supports this since 2.2.11) or maybe they can be requested on the CentOS Plus repositories? Hey guys, I've been getting some strange selinux messages after the 5.3 upgrade. It appears as though my mail system (postfix) is constantly trying to access the rpm database? Here's the audit messages (I tend to look at my selinux messages using audit2allow < /var/log/audit.log as I find it easier to read quickly): allow postfix_postdrop_t rpm_t:tcp_socket { read write }; allow postfix_postdrop_t rpm_var_lib_t:file { read write }; allow postfix_postdrop_t user_home_t:file { getattr append }; allow postfix_postdrop_t var_lib_t:file write; allow system_mail_t rpm_t:tcp_socket { read write }; allow system_mail_t rpm_var_lib_t:file { read write }; allow system_mail_t var_lib_t:file write; I've been getting the latter set continously since the upgrade. Also, on a related note, is it normally best practices to 'setenforce 0' during a 5.x upgrade? Is it possible I've damaged something by leaving selinux enabled? Other than the spamassassin issue, the machine seems to be running ok..

Processes to disable

I was told by some more-experienced Cent users that there are a bunch of processes I should kill and get out of the startup folder. He said that Cent (even with a small install) has a bunch of processes that really aren't needed and just burn up processes. Which ones should I get rid of for just a webserver? MySQL server? There seems to be a lot of this needed lately. I suspect the issue is 5.2 -> 5.3 transition. Putting something like this in /etc/cron.daily/ when near a major update *might* make the transition times between point releases easier - #!/bin/bash RANGE=120 number=$RANDOM let "number %= $RANGE" delay=`/usr/bin/expr $number \* 60` sleep $delay /usr/bin/yum clean all > /dev/null 2>&1 /usr/bin/yum makecache > /dev/null 2>&1 -=- Point of the random delay is to not have lots of people hit all the servers at once.

Cannot play rmvb video files after burning to DVD

Hi, I am running CentOS 5.2. I tried to burn rmvb video files to DVD+R disk using Nautilus 2.16.2, the files were burned to the disk, but could not play it back with errors "Unkown file format". It was no problem to play the same file located on the disk. Any advice please? Thank you. Kind Regards, JH

Possible bug?

I had some problems with apache, and there were so many, (caused by removing ispconfig) I decided to just remove and re-install. This is what happened when I tried to do so, both from remote and via console. I tried the DVD as well as yum, and got essentially the same thing. x86_64 server OOM problems after update to 5.3

Hello, Over the weekend, I upgraded one of my servers that runs mysql and pdns to 5.3. Previous to the update I have not had an issue form this server. But since, I have had mysql die multiple times from oom-killer. $ uname -a Linux rack2a 2.6.18-128.1.6.el5 #1 SMP Wed Apr 1 09:10:25 EDT 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux Unfortunately, the server has been rebooted by others before I have been able to look at it while the problem is occurring. But I have found this in the logs: http://pastebin.centos.org/25553 Running sar -A: http://pastebin.centos.org/25556 Since the server was rebooted, the amount of swap is used is 0. How do I determine what process is/was chewing up the memory on this server? What should I be looking for to narrow this down? Thanks, Rick

when to reboot after updates

What is the rule of thumb for reboots after updates... Certainly if I update from 5.2 to 5.3 I reboot. But if you update something like krb5 or pam does that require a reboot? Does the "fix" get automatically loaded and used or do you just do a reboot always? Thanks, Jerry

flash drive crashes machine

I just installed 5.3 on a tower box. When I plug in a usb flash drive, the machine crashes. I don't know how to diagnose the problem; I used gnome-system-log, and got this (watching it as I plugged it in): Apr 12 16:43:25 ga7zx kernel: usb 1-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2 Apr 12 16:43:25 ga7zx kernel: usb 1-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice Apr 12 16:43:27 ga7zx kernel: Initializing USB Mass Storage driver... As this point, the whole system becomes an ice cube - I can't even 3-finger salute to reboot. This happened a few times - same result. The board is a Gigabyte with an AMD Athlon 1.3 GHz cpu. Be aware that this drive works fine on 3 other boxes (with 5.3, Fedora 7, and Fedora 8). What could be wrong? What else should I check? How do I fix it?

Lost Acroread and flash plugin

Since the upgrade to AdobeReader_enu-9.1.0-1.i486.rpm and flash-plugin-10.0.22.87-release.i386.rpm, I have lost these in firefox. And Adobe Reader is not even on my Gnome Applications panel, I have to run it from a terminal window. Perhaps this has been covered, but how do I get these back?

filesystem rpm fails when /home is NFS mounted
