vsFTPd and hidden files - standards compliant?

Hi Folks, I recently received a complaint regarding the vsFTP server I'm running on a CentOS 4.x box. The complaint was that it is improperly responding to the LIST command - it is not returning hidden (period prefixed) files in the directory listing. I investigated and found that vsFTPd would only return hidden files in the directory listing when it received the command "LIST -a". Reading RFC 959, it appears that the LIST command does not officially support any flags. I found the "force_dot_files" directive in the vsFTPd config file. Enabling the directive appears make vsFTPd RFC compliant with regards to responding to LIST -- returning all files and directories (even "dot files"). So I guess my question is: can anyone confirm that "LIST -a" really is contrary to the RFC? If so, does anyone know why $upstream_vendor would ship a default conf file that is standards non-compliant? Is there something I'm missing here? Thanks, Andy Hull

I would say that people know that 5.2 work and looking at changelogs, they don't see a real NEED to install 5.3. I personally always have the newest release though. One thing I would say to improve visibility, is making a bigger release. It took me a few days to find out that 5.3 was actually out. Maybe digg.com... Bug in yum Logwatch reporting

I've been noticing yum updates on several servers I manage over the last few weeks, which I know I didn't perform and could not explain until this morning. At first I suspect a break-in, but found no other evidence or reason an intruder would run the yum updates I was viewing. Yum updates are logged in /var/log/yum.log, which is what Logwatch scans. Seems that the format of the log entries is: "MMM DD", the year is missing! This morning looking at this log sequentially I noticed I did do yum updates on Apr 02 and Apr 03 as reported in last night's logwatch, but not April of 2009, but rather April of 2008! Has anyone else noticed this behavior and/or know if there is a fix in progress for it? Brett

Sending a postfix email to my domain.

Hi, I have setup postfix on my server (for my blog to send out emails) however I host my email on google apps. I want my server to be able to send emails towards my GoogleApps account but it's sending it to the user within the system (I know this is normal but I need it to be a bit different). You get out-of-the-box CentOS and are allowed to install pretty well anything you like, including virtual machines on top. acoread 9 slow printing

We use acroread on Centos 5 to print 11x17 plates for a printing press on a HP Laserjet 5100. acroread 8 (AdobeReader_enu-8.1.2-1.i486.rpm) prints a plate in between 60 and 90 seconds. acroread 9 (AdbeRdr9.1.0-1_i486linux_enu.rpm) prints the same plate in 10 to 15 minutes. I've tried this with several different PDF files and it's always the same result. Hooking the printer up with a parallel cable or with the HP Jetdirect network interface makes no noticeable difference. Something has turned the printing performance of acroread 9 into a slug. Not sure if this will solve it, but maybe try putting postfix on a different port. Has anyone on this list got sendmail and cyrus-imapd configured so that email addressed in the form username+folder(a)example.com gets delivered directly to cyrus' user.username.inbox.folder? I have been tinkering with this on and off for about a week and no matter what I have tried, all traffic addressed in the +folder format ends up in user.username.inbox instead. If anyone has gotten this to work then I would very much appreciate knowing the exact steps that you followed to implement it. 1. milter clamav borked?

hey, I upgraded a server to 5.3 from 5.2 today, its a mail server, and its using the rpmforge clamav milter... was getting errors in my mail log like... system-config-date-tui ??

Remote box keeps reverting the localtime to Eastern (America/New_York). cd /etc rm localtime && ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/UTC localtime fixes it - but it seems to revert from time to time, I presume from yum updates (or possibly an init script ??) In /etc/sysconfig there is a config file for it. I'd rather not manually edit it, it looks simple enough, but I'd rather use the tool if there is one. system-config-date wants to pull in ~ 20MB of stuff I don't want that looks like it is needed for a gui config tool, but yum can't find a system-config-date-tui alternative. Is there a text UI / console alternative, and what it is called? If not, where is the format for /etc/sysconfig/clock specified? Install is a xen image (originally CentOS 5.0), so selecting the desired local time at install wasn't an option. Right now it says: ZONE="America/New_York" UTC=false ARC=false Would changing ZONE to ZONE="UTC" be enough to keep my desired UTC localtime?

First off, I want to express my appreciation for the dedication of the CentOS developers for providing us with the quality work they always do. This is a question and a request for explanation so that my little mind can understand what's going on. And for those inquiring minds who want to know, I have already filed bug reports. ;^> Over the weekend I went through several boxes here at home and upgraded from 5.2 to 5.3. I was a good boy and read the release notes first, followed the procedures recommended therein, and the upgrades went just fine. I have to say that I was less than ecstatic when I saw my desktop machines install NetworkManager and PPP where they had not been installed before. A bit of poking at the new situation led me to the conclusion that NetworkManager is now a requirement of Evolution, and PPP is a requirement of NetworkManager. Since these are desktop boxes that do not move around, and communicate via my in-house LAN over a single Ethernet interface, I don't see any pressing need for NetworkManager and PPP. I would appreciate it if someone could shed some light on this situation, since the only conclusion that I can draw so far is that this is unnecessary system bloat. PHP framework for book sharing?

Several coworkers and I have scattered amongst us all sorts of resources related to the mesh stuff we do (RADIUS, networking, RF, antennas, microwave, R&S, Linux, etc), and most of these resources are in the form of PDF or Word docs. Is there a PHP framework that I can easily "yum install" on a CentOS box that would allow us to login and easily share these resources with each other? (Ideally, something like this would have an RSS feed so that we could get updates when a coworker uploads something.)

DKMS and new(er) Nvidia-drivers

I got the DKMS-system working and now have the Nvidia-drivers v173.08 installed (using rpmforge as suggested previously). Unfortunately this particular driver version gives me screen artifacts so as to make the screen more or less unreadable. Nvidia's proprietary drivers are now up to v180.44 and this version is fine with my test system. I really like the DKMS-system, as it enables me to keep kernel and gfx-drivers up-to-date on our course-lab computers doing 3D-molecular modeling. However if I can't make use of newer, and better, drivers this whole thing is borked for me... 8-/ My question is who updates those drivers, as the v173.08 Nvidia drivers are now almost a year old? Would there be any other good repo with more current drivers suitable for use with DKMS and CentOS? The repos I found are tagged with PCLinux, Mandriva and Ubuntu to name a few. I'm not quite sure these rpms would work with CentOS and the dkms install there. Any hints appreciated. how to get iptables rule to log actions?

Hi all, I need to block access to an external IP address, on CentOS 5 with iptables, but can't seem to get it right. I have the following options in /etc/sysconfig/iptables: -A RH-Firewall-1-OUTPUT -d 87.89.180.50 -j LOG -A RH-Firewall-1-OUTPUT -d 87.89.180.50 - j DROP But when I restart iptables, I get the following errors: Flushing firewall rules: [OK] Setting chains to policy ACCEPT: filter [OK] Unloading iptables modules: [OK] Applying iptables firewall rules: iptables-restore v1.3.5: Couldn't load target: 'RH-Firewall-1-OUTPUT':/lib/iptables/libipt_RH-Firewall-1-OUTPUT.so: cannot open shared object file: no such file or directory. Turns out I had some other Nvidia-driver already installed. Running "yum reinstall Nvidia-x11-drv" and "yum install kernel*" fixed it. Now /etc/X11/xorg.conf says it's using driver "nvidia" instead of "nv". Thanks for the help guys!

Initial 5.3 install box froze at end of CD 3

Hi, With the 5.3 CDS I started an install got through to 98% of CD 3 but I was called away. Came back this morning and the box was on, but had frozen.. Every time I reboot, cold boot, I come up with black screen.. Vers 0.97 <grub> Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. TAB etc.. Is there a way I can get to CD 4 and continue the install, or am I back to the top again?? Thanks rock

Can't install domUs in 5.3 dom0

Hello. I can't install 5.3 domUs in 5.3 dom0 with the very same /etc/xen/domU.cfg and remote domU.ks that I've used in Centos 5.1. The only I've changed is Centos version (including new 5.3 xen kernel and initrd images). Results are that anaconda can't assing networki configuration to network interface (probably because of not seeing it) and such error messages in xend.log: [2009-04-04 12:45:42 xend 2999] DEBUG (blkif:27) exception looking up device number for xvda: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/dev/xvda' Is there any way to fix this or shell I roll back to 5.1? -- Tomek

5.3 upgrade - fuse and ipw3945 unistall

Fortunately I was starring at the screen during an upgrade and 'caught' the following set of messages. It is hard to remember what I installed fuse for, I think for webdav. My system has a ipw3945 pci card, wireless is working. Centos Forum is down??

Hi, I have joined the Centos forum a few days ago and still do not have my activation email. My user name and email address is in there but I cannot do anything until I activate. I have left a message with the webmaster and I have requested a lost password, but get nothing. I have checked all my email filters, spam boxes etc., and yet nothing. I am getting up to 100 emails a day at that address. Any ideas how I can get this up? Many thanks. oz :-)

Shadow passwords NOT md5'ed ?

Hello, I have a very weird problem on a CentOS 5.2 system. A few months ago, encrypted passwords in the shadow file were MD5'ed - allowing for long passwords, rather than only 8 characters max. Today, passwords are 3DES'ed only. No way to find how the system reverted to DES-encrypting. But what's more bothersome is we cannot get the system to go the MD5 way again, despite all our best efforts. Authconfig says this : pam_unix is always enabled shadow passwords are enabled password hashing algorithm is md5 So... where to look ? Tia, -- FdL

X session lockup (CentOS 4.7)

I just had a very odd incident with my session locking up, so I thought I'd describe it to see if it rings any bells with anyone. Background: I shut down my machine last night for Earth Hour, so the last thing I did before logging out was exit Firefox3, telling it to save my open tab state. When I turned the system back on and started FF3 again, it installed new versions of three plugins (I believe NoScript and Elasticfox but I don't recall the third) and then restored the session as expected. Not related to FF, but I also started up the "filelight" filesystem visualization app, which I don't normally have running, and it was still up on a different desktop while all the following was happening. This morning I opened a new FF3 window to browse CNN. I opened tabs on five or six stories from the front page and then went to read through them, closing each tab as I finished each story. (There were six other tabs open in the first FF window, so no more than 12-14 tabs in two windows total.) After closing the second such tab FF began responding very slowly, even to simply scrolling the window, and eventually stopped responding entirely (wouldn't even redraw when I dragged windows around). I popped up an xterm and ran "strace" on FF to see if I could find the problem, and lo and behold as long as strace was running FF recovered and responded fine, but when I stopped tracing it froze again. Unfortunately I lost the trace output because of what happened next, but I do recall that it was accessing /etc/localtime repeatedly and very frequently. I left strace running and went back to FF, hoping to see the tail of the trace at the moment FF locked up again. However, the next time FF appeared to be frozen I found that not just FF but the entire Gnome session was stuck. I was able to move the mouse and to Alt-F2 into a text console window, but nothing else responded. I went back and forth a few times between the text console and the X console attempting to diagnose (including killing the strace and sending a CONT signal to FF, because "ps" said FF was in stopped ("T") state), but after a few passes at that even Alt-F2 stopped working. Fortunately I have another computer here, so I ssh'd in and ran "killall -1 firefox-bin". This woke things up to the point that one of the pending Alt-F2 keystrokes was seen and the text console came up, but although I could then switch consoles again, nothing else in the X session was responding. I finally HUP'd gnome-session (which stopped everything else; I checked "ps" to make sure nothing that had been associated with that session was still running) and I have now logged in again and everything seems fine. FF restarted and restored the session from the time I killed it, and an strace of it now doesn't show any accesses to /etc/localtime at all. I find this all especially strange because the whole system had been restarted less than 12 hours before.

I found reason, why update wont go. I have installed much newer glibc, than what comes with 5.3. I needed that, because of couple radioamateur progs. Now have to think, how do I downgrade glibc. If I try remove, there's over 600 pagages, which have to remove and that's not good. Hmm... Jarmo

what requires lm_sensors?

I found that lm_sensors got installed because of a dependency on my first Xen VM that I updated to 5.3. lm_sensors doesn't make sense in a VM. I thought, ok let's check after the update who wants it. However: rpm -q --whatrequires lm_sensors no package requires lm_sensors (same for --triggeredby with lm_sensors or the packages below) Trying to remove lm_sensors reveals these packages: Removing: lm_sensors i386 2.10.7-4.el5 installed 1.8 M Removing for dependencies: cacti noarch 0.8.7d-1.el5.rf installed 5.1 M net-snmp i386 1:5.3.2.2-5.el5 installed 2.8 M net-snmp-utils i386 1:5.3.2.2-5.el5 installed 342 k php-snmp i386 5.1.6-23.el5 installed 24 k But trying to remove any of them doesn't show a dependency on lm_sensors. xen thinks guests exist but not show in list

Hello: I tried to unsuccessfully install a guest on xen. It failed when it tried to connect to the display since I installed the OS without a graphical environment. When I do an xm list, I do not see the guest, but if I try to do virt-install with the same guest name, it tells me the domain already exists. I tried xm delete on the domain but that also tells me the domain does not exist. Any ideas? Having trouble installing flash player on centos 5.3 desktop machine

Hi, I'm having trouble getting the flash player installed onto my centos desktop. When i go to the adobe site, I click on the YUM for Linux version, then install it, and PC says "/tmp/adobe-release-i386-1.0-1.noarch-1.rpm is already installed" - but it's not working. So then tried downloading the .tar.gz for linux version, and PC asks me which program to open to install it, and i don't have a clue. Then I try downloading the .rpm version for linux, and my pc says "/tmp/flash-plugin-10.0.22.87-release.i386.rpm is already installed", but it's still not working. What am I doing wrong? Hi all, I hope this isn't too OT, but since I use a CentOS5.2 + Exim mail server (which is hosted in one of our data centres) I don't think it should be. On of our clients use an MS Exchange 2003 SBS server, with exchange for their internal email. We provide them with a domain, ADSL (which uses dynamic DNS) and POP3 email. They don't have an spam filter program on the exchange server itself due to costs, so I have setup each user on the Exim server, which runs ASSPX for anti-virus / spam filter / etc. Then I setup the SBS 2003 server to pull the email via POP3, but this doesn't seem to work too well, cause the exchange server doesn't always download the POP3 email, and then the users often sit without email until I go there to manually download the mail again. I have tried changing the MX record to point to their DynDNS address, and it works well, but then they get a lot of spam. And the cost of a server-side spam solution is just too expensive, and they also pay for the bandwidth uses when spam comes in. So, I moved their MX record back to the Linux server. But now I sit with the problem of the POP3 connector failing from time to time. So, I would like to know, is there a way to "push" (not forward) mail from the Linux server, after it has arrived and spam been blocked, to another domain, but with the same email address? i.e. the domain in question is attorneys.co.za and I've setup attorneys.dyndns.net as the dynamic domain, but the exchange serves email for attorneys.co.za Forwarding email doesn't work, since there's no such user as bob(a)attorneys.dyndns.net, but rather bob(a)attorneys.co.za. -- Kind Regards Rudi Ahlers

Apache SSL key pass phrase question

I just set up a secure server. Followed the godaddy instructions for key generation/installation - and the server wanted my pass phrase to start. When I started developing I followed instructions for a self signed cert and everything went dandy. Anyway - after a little googling and an uneasy feeling that I messed up and godaddy might charge me a fee to resubmit for a new cert, I found the following solution - openssl rsa -in secure.shastaherps.key.old -out secure.shastaherps.key After running that and entering my pass phrase, no pass phrase is required to start the server and it seems like the browsers don't complain, so I think I'm set, but I thought I'd verify that all really is well and that doing that isn't going to cause any issues. If I understand it correctly, the phrase was needed when Apache starts in order to decrypt the key, and all I did above was decrypt the key so that apache doesn't have to, correct?
