CentOS automatically blocks port 80 out-of-the-box

Maybe I just haven't installed enough distros, but the times I've installed CentOS, I've had to remember that by default, iptables is blocking inbound port 80 requests. This leads me to believe that I have a non-OS firewall error because I can ping but not http request. Is there a particular reason for this? Or is it a fail on my end? Issues with vsftpd install

For an unrelated reason, I had to uninstall vsftpd from my CentOS 5.3 install. I have heard rumours from some Red Hat employees that IPA will be integrated into Spacewalk this was about 1.5 months ago which would also make sense since Spacewalk is supposed to be their single point of management tool. But as I said it's rumours. 3rd party DNS

Please reply off list as this is ot from CentOS. Just looking or a recommendation of a 3rd party DNS provider (my client prefers free) with a web based control pannel (I doubt there is any other way). One of the important features is being able to set the ttl levels. I just have not used any, so I am not sure what to recommend to them. Thanks in advance. D

USB Thumb Drive Confusion

I am running CentOS 4.7. I have a USB flash (thumb) drive that has a bunch of files placed there by Windows. I plugged it into the CentOS machine, and when I listed the files under "/media/usb-name", there was nothing there. I created an empty file: touch blah and it showed up when I did list it. I noticed, checking dmesg that it was attached to /dev/sdb. So I did a quick fdisk /dev/sdb I saw that it had a partition of type of W95 FAT16 under /dev/sdb1. How come I'm not able to see files placed on that device by XP/Vista machines when I plug it into the CentOS 4.7 machine, but I'm able to create a file on it, and list it? I did double-check and plugged that drive into my XP workstation and sure enough I was able to see all the files. === Al

can't "make"

Hello. I just fresh-installed 5.3 onto my laptop, and I have a problem trying to get wifi working. Be aware that I have 5.2 on it, and did the same process, and it worked great! Install CentOS directly from usb drive?

Hello: I followed the instructions here: http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/5.2/Installation_Guide/ch02s04s01.html to put isolinux on a usb drive. When I boot from the usb drive, the installer comes up and I can do a network install. I have to say that is very impressive! But, since I have a 4GB usb drive, I am thinking I can load the rest of the installation onto the usb drive so I do not have to use a network install. I searched the Internet but could not find any instructions on doing that. Can someone point me in the right direction? I just updated kernel manually last evening: that is, directly using rpm and it did update the grub.conf. Well, you can always manually edit the grub.conf file, right? BTW: I managed to install 5.3 on the very first generation MAC PRO (xeon 2.66, XT1900) last weekend with old kernel: I took a detour in order to install it directly from CD iso. The system Hung several times and the DVD rom was NOT recognized. However, after updated to the newest kernel last evening, the DVD ram recognized and it did NOT hang any more: at least for about 6 hours. Cheers! contradictory netfilter default policy

I'm curious why CentOS contradicts its own (or, actually RH's) netfilter default policy. On http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Network/IPTables , at the end of section 1, it's stated that (generally) the default policy for INPUT is to DROP. So, why is it set to ACCEPT? Btw, Fedora is also this way.

vsFTPd and hidden files - standards compliant?

Hi Folks, I recently received a complaint regarding the vsFTP server I'm running on a CentOS 4.x box. The complaint was that it is improperly responding to the LIST command - it is not returning hidden (period prefixed) files in the directory listing. I investigated and found that vsFTPd would only return hidden files in the directory listing when it received the command "LIST -a". Reading RFC 959, it appears that the LIST command does not officially support any flags. I found the "force_dot_files" directive in the vsFTPd config file. Enabling the directive appears make vsFTPd RFC compliant with regards to responding to LIST -- returning all files and directories (even "dot files"). So I guess my question is: can anyone confirm that "LIST -a" really is contrary to the RFC? If so, does anyone know why $upstream_vendor would ship a default conf file that is standards non-compliant? Is there something I'm missing here? Thanks, Andy Hull

I would say that people know that 5.2 work and looking at changelogs, they don't see a real NEED to install 5.3. I personally always have the newest release though. One thing I would say to improve visibility, is making a bigger release. It took me a few days to find out that 5.3 was actually out. Maybe digg.com... Bug in yum Logwatch reporting

I've been noticing yum updates on several servers I manage over the last few weeks, which I know I didn't perform and could not explain until this morning. At first I suspect a break-in, but found no other evidence or reason an intruder would run the yum updates I was viewing. Yum updates are logged in /var/log/yum.log, which is what Logwatch scans. Seems that the format of the log entries is: "MMM DD", the year is missing! This morning looking at this log sequentially I noticed I did do yum updates on Apr 02 and Apr 03 as reported in last night's logwatch, but not April of 2009, but rather April of 2008! Has anyone else noticed this behavior and/or know if there is a fix in progress for it? Brett

Sending a postfix email to my domain.

Hi, I have setup postfix on my server (for my blog to send out emails) however I host my email on google apps. I want my server to be able to send emails towards my GoogleApps account but it's sending it to the user within the system (I know this is normal but I need it to be a bit different). acoread 9 slow printing

We use acroread on Centos 5 to print 11x17 plates for a printing press on a HP Laserjet 5100. acroread 8 (AdobeReader_enu-8.1.2-1.i486.rpm) prints a plate in between 60 and 90 seconds. acroread 9 (AdbeRdr9.1.0-1_i486linux_enu.rpm) prints the same plate in 10 to 15 minutes. I've tried this with several different PDF files and it's always the same result. Hooking the printer up with a parallel cable or with the HP Jetdirect network interface makes no noticeable difference. Something has turned the printing performance of acroread 9 into a slug. Not sure if this will solve it, but maybe try putting postfix on a different port. Has anyone on this list got sendmail and cyrus-imapd configured so that email addressed in the form username+folder(a)example.com gets delivered directly to cyrus' user.username.inbox.folder? I have been tinkering with this on and off for about a week and no matter what I have tried, all traffic addressed in the +folder format ends up in user.username.inbox instead. If anyone has gotten this to work then I would very much appreciate knowing the exact steps that you followed to implement it. 1. milter clamav borked?

hey, I upgraded a server to 5.3 from 5.2 today, its a mail server, and its using the rpmforge clamav milter... was getting errors in my mail log like... system-config-date-tui ??

Remote box keeps reverting the localtime to Eastern (America/New_York). cd /etc rm localtime && ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/UTC localtime fixes it - but it seems to revert from time to time, I presume from yum updates (or possibly an init script ??) In /etc/sysconfig there is a config file for it. I'd rather not manually edit it, it looks simple enough, but I'd rather use the tool if there is one. system-config-date wants to pull in ~ 20MB of stuff I don't want that looks like it is needed for a gui config tool, but yum can't find a system-config-date-tui alternative. Is there a text UI / console alternative, and what it is called? If not, where is the format for /etc/sysconfig/clock specified? Install is a xen image (originally CentOS 5.0), so selecting the desired local time at install wasn't an option. Right now it says: ZONE="America/New_York" UTC=false ARC=false Would changing ZONE to ZONE="UTC" be enough to keep my desired UTC localtime?

First off, I want to express my appreciation for the dedication of the CentOS developers for providing us with the quality work they always do. This is a question and a request for explanation so that my little mind can understand what's going on. And for those inquiring minds who want to know, I have already filed bug reports. ;^> Over the weekend I went through several boxes here at home and upgraded from 5.2 to 5.3. I was a good boy and read the release notes first, followed the procedures recommended therein, and the upgrades went just fine. I have to say that I was less than ecstatic when I saw my desktop machines install NetworkManager and PPP where they had not been installed before. A bit of poking at the new situation led me to the conclusion that NetworkManager is now a requirement of Evolution, and PPP is a requirement of NetworkManager. Since these are desktop boxes that do not move around, and communicate via my in-house LAN over a single Ethernet interface, I don't see any pressing need for NetworkManager and PPP. I would appreciate it if someone could shed some light on this situation, since the only conclusion that I can draw so far is that this is unnecessary system bloat. PHP framework for book sharing?

Several coworkers and I have scattered amongst us all sorts of resources related to the mesh stuff we do (RADIUS, networking, RF, antennas, microwave, R&S, Linux, etc), and most of these resources are in the form of PDF or Word docs. Is there a PHP framework that I can easily "yum install" on a CentOS box that would allow us to login and easily share these resources with each other? (Ideally, something like this would have an RSS feed so that we could get updates when a coworker uploads something.)

DKMS and new(er) Nvidia-drivers

I got the DKMS-system working and now have the Nvidia-drivers v173.08 installed (using rpmforge as suggested previously). Unfortunately this particular driver version gives me screen artifacts so as to make the screen more or less unreadable. Nvidia's proprietary drivers are now up to v180.44 and this version is fine with my test system. I really like the DKMS-system, as it enables me to keep kernel and gfx-drivers up-to-date on our course-lab computers doing 3D-molecular modeling. However if I can't make use of newer, and better, drivers this whole thing is borked for me... 8-/ My question is who updates those drivers, as the v173.08 Nvidia drivers are now almost a year old? Would there be any other good repo with more current drivers suitable for use with DKMS and CentOS? The repos I found are tagged with PCLinux, Mandriva and Ubuntu to name a few. I'm not quite sure these rpms would work with CentOS and the dkms install there. Any hints appreciated. how to get iptables rule to log actions?

Hi all, I need to block access to an external IP address, on CentOS 5 with iptables, but can't seem to get it right. I have the following options in /etc/sysconfig/iptables: -A RH-Firewall-1-OUTPUT -d 87.89.180.50 -j LOG -A RH-Firewall-1-OUTPUT -d 87.89.180.50 - j DROP But when I restart iptables, I get the following errors: Flushing firewall rules: [OK] Setting chains to policy ACCEPT: filter [OK] Unloading iptables modules: [OK] Applying iptables firewall rules: iptables-restore v1.3.5: Couldn't load target: 'RH-Firewall-1-OUTPUT':/lib/iptables/libipt_RH-Firewall-1-OUTPUT.so: cannot open shared object file: no such file or directory. Initial 5.3 install box froze at end of CD 3

Hi, With the 5.3 CDS I started an install got through to 98% of CD 3 but I was called away. Came back this morning and the box was on, but had frozen.. Every time I reboot, cold boot, I come up with black screen.. Vers 0.97 <grub> Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. TAB etc.. Is there a way I can get to CD 4 and continue the install, or am I back to the top again?? Thanks rock

Hello. I can't install 5.3 domUs in 5.3 dom0 with the very same /etc/xen/domU.cfg and remote domU.ks that I've used in Centos 5.1. The only I've changed is Centos version (including new 5.3 xen kernel and initrd images). Results are that anaconda can't assing networki configuration to network interface (probably because of not seeing it) and such error messages in xend.log: [2009-04-04 12:45:42 xend 2999] DEBUG (blkif:27) exception looking up device number for xvda: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/dev/xvda' Is there any way to fix this or shell I roll back to 5.1? -- Tomek

5.3 upgrade - fuse and ipw3945 unistall

Fortunately I was starring at the screen during an upgrade and 'caught' the following set of messages. It is hard to remember what I installed fuse for, I think for webdav. My system has a ipw3945 pci card, wireless is working. Centos Forum is down??

Hi, I have joined the Centos forum a few days ago and still do not have my activation email. My user name and email address is in there but I cannot do anything until I activate. I have left a message with the webmaster and I have requested a lost password, but get nothing. I have checked all my email filters, spam boxes etc., and yet nothing. I am getting up to 100 emails a day at that address. Any ideas how I can get this up? Many thanks. oz :-)
