Hope this does not duplicate to the same place, but I sent the following message to a different input. Here it is: I have tried 4 or 5 times to install Centos 7,* and it seems to install, but it won't boot to KDE or any desktop. It comes up in text mode, and nothing I do will get it into a kde mode. Or any graphic mode, that I know of. I have enabled a root password, and a user password. I am trying to install on a SSD of 250 GB. The installation appears to work, but it boots to black screen with white letters. It appears to accept some BASH commands, but it does not respond to startx or startkde. It appears to respond to su, but that doesn't help. (Or sudo, either, but I'm used to su.) I have tried to clear the SSD completely so there are no partitions on it, not even the Windows 1GB boot partition. (I had that, but Centos didn't work so I eliminated it.) * I downloaded a number of tries and burned each to DVD, (one appeared to be defective) but none of them worked. It would help, perhaps, if the downloads included a verification. I really want an RPM system with kde, and I used PCLOS for years, but the latest version is a great disappointment, and the last upgrade crashed the machine, which is why I, having tried their April release, I am coming to CentOS--or trying to. I don't know what information I can provide, but the bare-bones of the system are this: MOBO: Foxxconn G41MXE/G41MXS-K BIOS: American Megatrends id:0 version 080015, date 10/14/210 CPU: Intel Cor2Duo E8600 @ 3.33GHz Width 64 bits Closck 333MHz Memory 8Gib Display: NVidia GF 116 All of this worked perfectly with PCLOS for many years. "Untrusted application launcher (desktop launchers)"

I am having this problem on Ubuntu 18.04 -- I manage a batch of desktop machines with some convience desktop launchers, which gnome3 insists are "untrusted". update failure

When I attempted to update a remote server via SSH last night the UPS on my local workstations failed, causing the SSH session to get dropped in the middle of the upgrade process. This morning I am not able to complete the update. When it failed when I tried to run it again thins morning I did the suggested things like "dnf clean all" and "rpm -rebuilddb", and I still get this after it downloads the packages again: Running transaction test The downloaded packages were saved in cache until the next successful transaction. You can remove cached packages by executing 'dnf clean packages'. CentOS 7, KDE, Dolphin and MTP support

Hi, It looks like KDE's file manager Dolphin doesn't support MTP under CentOS 7. When I plug in an MTP device like my Nikon camera or an Android phone, Digikam shows its content OK, but Dolphin seems to ignore it. For now, my custom CentOS 7 + KDE desktop meets about 99 % of my needs. Now I've decided to tackle the remaining 1 %. Yesterday for example, I managed to correct the missing RAR support in the Ark archive manager, so I fetched the SRPM and rebuilt it to add RAR archive support, and it works perfectly now. I'd like to try something similar with Dolphin's MTP support, which seems to have been disabled. According to rpm -qif /usr/bin/dolphin, it's part of the kde-baseapps package. I fetched the SRPM and experimented with it, but apparently, enabling/disabling MTP does not happen here. So my question here: which package in KDE 4 is responsible for MTP support in Dolphin ? Can't find SRPMS for CentOS

Hi, I have to rebuild a handful of CentOS packages for some extra functionality. So I setup a build environment in a virtual machine, and right now I'm trying to find the SRPMS. I enabled the repositories listed in /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Sources.repo and then tried this: [microlinux@buildbox:~] $ yumdownloader --source ark Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, langpacks, priorities Enabling epel-source repository Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile * nux-dextop: mirror.li.nux.ro 9238 packages excluded due to repository priority protections No source RPM found for ark-4.10.5-4.el7.x86_64 Nothing to download This happens with pretty much every package I try as an argument. What am I doing wrong? mariadb: How to delete foreign key constraint from non-existing table?

Hi, somehow phpmyadmin messed things up when I was trying to modify a table. The table disappeared, and now it's impossible to re-create it: MariaDB [time]> create table etikettend_metainfo (userID integer(6) unsigned, stationsnummer integer(4) unsigned, primary key (userID)); ERROR 1005 (HY000): Can't create table `time`.`etikettend_metainfo` (errno: 150 "Foreign key constraint is incorrectly formed") MariaDB [time]> show tables like 'etikettend%'; +------------------------------+ | Tables_in_time (etikettend%) | +------------------------------+ | etikettend_etikettentypen | | etikettend_stationen | +------------------------------+ 2 rows in set (0.001 sec) Since the table has vanished, I'm finding myself unable to remove the key constraints, and trying to disable them was also unsuccessful. It is not necessary to recover the vanished table because it had just been created and was still empty anyway. But how do I fix this?

Thanks. This appears to be the case here. The machine is a Dell 11G server. I upgraded all the firmwares with dsu, BIOS was at latest already. After dsu, I upgraded the NIC option ROM with bootutil (I'm not using the builtin BRCM NICs, but an Intel X520-T2 card). That's all I can do on the hardware front. Accessing Android phones on CentOS 7

Hi, My standard Linux desktop is based on a personal blend of CentOS 7 with KDE 4.14 and various add-ons from third-party repositories like EPEL and Nux-Dextop. After a brief stint on OpenSUSE Leap 15.0, this is what I use on my workstation and on my laptop. And this is also what I install on my client's machines, just like I did in our local school's computer room. I'm currently busy sanding down a few remaining edges, and one thing that's left is accessing Android phones. On less conservative distros based on KDE Plasma 5, this is a no-brainer, since all you have to do is plug in the phone and then browse its content using Dolphin or some other file manager. Unfortunately this is not possible with the version of KDE shipping with CentOS 7. Any ideas for that? Systemd, PHP-FPM, and /cgi-bin scripts

CentOS 7 server and Fedora 29 dev workstation, both with PHP 7.2, Apache 2.4, php-fpm, all updated. I have a web-based app I've been developing for some time, and recently the need to upload files of large size EG 1 GB or larger, has come up. So I wrote a /cgi-bin script that works, takes the input, and even runs the same application framework as the main application which normally works in php-fpm. (which also works in a shell script so it wasn't hard) So /path/to/ webroot/cgi-bin/upload.php works just fine running as a separate process as a cgi executable. Yay! But... php-fpm has its own "tmp" directory, something like /tmp/systemd- private-RANDOM-php-fpm.service-RANDOM/tmp that the cgi-bin has no access to. To be able to populate $_FILES in a way compatible with the rest of the framework, it appears that I need to be able to run the /cgi-bin in the same context as the php-fpm environment so files can be access across all the different parts of the web app. This includes related things like access to the $_SESSION data files, and so on. How do I even begin? Google searches are loaded with stuff like perl cgis having access to PHP data, PRE-SYSTEMD, and I find no apache directives (so far) that have been helpful. Any ideas?

Recommended PHP 7 source for Centos 7

I know there's a couple third party repos offering PHP 7 for Centos. I prefer not to add too much third party that I don't have to and PHP 7 has been mainstream for some time now, I thought maybe it would be in EPEL by now. What is the most recommended and stable way to get an up to date PHP on Centos 7?

Are linux distros redundant?

I just realised that I haven't touched a centos/redhat machine in more than a couple of years. Everything I do now is Kubernetes based or using cloud services (or k8s cloud services). What about it listeroons? Is your fleet of centos boxes ever expanding or are you just taking care of a single java 6 jboss application that takes care of the companies widget stocks? Intel Vroc experiences?

Hi, Has anyone had any experience with Intel Vroc[1]? I'm possibly having to deal with a new server with such technology and can't find much (real world) information about it. Looking at the specs it's basically a glorified fake raid which usually turns on my alarm bells. Has anyone done any testing, how does it compare with "real" raid or software raid? Citrix receiver and certificates on CentOS 7

Hi, I'm currently migrating a client's workstation from OpenSUSE Leap 15.0 to my personal blend of CentOS 7 and KDE. The client has some extra software installed on his machine, and one of these applications is causing me some troubles: Citrix Receiver. Here's my old blog article on installing Citrix Receiver on OpenSUSE : * https://www.microlinux.fr/citrix-receiver-opensuse-leap-15-0/ The application's certificate store is incomplete, so here's how I resolved the problem under OpenSUSE : # cd /opt/Citrix/ICAClient/keystore/ # rm -rf cacerts/ # ln -s /etc/ssl/certs cacerts Once this is done, Citric Receiver works perfectly under OpenSUSE. Now I tried to do the same thing under CentOS 7. The certificates are stored in a different directory, so here's what I did. # cd /opt/Citrix/ICAClient/keystore/ # rm -rf cacerts/ # ln -s /etc/pki/tls/certs cacerts Unfortunately this doesn't seem to work. Which leaves me clueless. Any suggestions? Measure network bandwidth per process

Hi, Is there a way to measure network bandwidth per process in CentOS Linux release 7.6.1810 (Core) using any utility? I was reading about nethogs but it does not have the option to run it in daemon mode so that we can take a look at historical data to figure out the process which was consuming high network bandwidth instead it is a good tool for Live monitoring. What is the purpose of devtmpfs which is mounted on /dev, tmpfs mounted on /dev/shm and so on and so forth. What is the difference between devtmpfs and tmpfs? Hi. I try to install openvpn at my centos 7 server (CentOS Linux release 7.6.1810 (Core)). According to many tutorials at the internet, I was using yum install epel-release -y to enable the repo. yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop" fails

I’ve got a CentOS 7 VM here that was installed with one of the CLI-only presets. To answer a question in another thread here, I wanted to install a GNOME desktop environment in it, so I went searching and found the standard instructions for doing that. The problem is that rebooting the VM gives me a black screen after it finishes the text booting parts. There’s an X cursor, and wiggling the mouse moves it, but I get no gray login screen. Pressing Ctrl-Alt-F2 and logging into a text console works. Saying “startx” brings X back up again — indicating that it does find the proper X drivers and such — but now I get just a few default icons on the desktop, but no top and bottom toolbars: https://imgur.com/IMI9Gh9 So, the GNOME shell is also broken. I’ve repeated the yum groupinstalls for “GNOME Desktop”, “Server with GUI” and “Graphical Administration Tools.” yum claims everything is fine. Short of installing another VM with a GUI enabled from the start, I’m stuck. For what it’s worth, the VM system is Parallels, and I do have the Parallels Tools installed. The same symptoms occur when booting into single-user mode and trying to startx from there.

FYI: C 7, broken cron, sort of SOLVED

I was fighting this a few weeks ago, and asking here. I *finally* solved it yesterday... and the answer isn't pleasant. Running the command authconfig --enablesssd --enablesssdauth --enablesmartcard --smartcardmodule=sssd --smartcardaction=0 --updateall breaks crond, as per bugzilla # Bug 1650314. The way that it breaks it is to insert into /etc/pam.d/password-auth-ac two lines reading auth required pam_deny.so one as the third line in the auth stanza, so: auth required pam_env.so auth required pam_faildelay.so delay=2000000 auth required pam_deny.so auth [default=1 ignore=ignore success=ok] pam_succeed_if.so uid >= 1000 quiet auth [default=1 ignore=ignore success=ok] pam_localuser.so auth sufficient pam_unix.so nullok try_first_pass auth requisite pam_succeed_if.so uid >= 1000 quiet_success <...> and the other where it belongs, as the last auth line. This is clearly a bug in the code, as pam_deny.so should ONLY be the *last* line in the auth stanza. We've replicated this on an RHEL workstation, and then put a ticket in. The... odd reply (so far) was that they weren't going to fix it in the 7.7 errata, and to use authselect in 8.0 (which is only a beta release). We're going to escalate this. In the meantime, if anyone has run into this, delete that auth required pam_deny.so that's in the middle of the auth stanza in /etc/pam.d/password-auth-ac, it should *only* be at the end of the auth stanza, and everything will work correctly. mark

A strange situation with MegaCli64 and smartctl

We have a system - it's C 7 - that a while back lost three drives of a large array. The other admin here replaced the failed drives, but never went through the MegaRAID replace series of commands. I've just brought it back up and put a new filesystem on it, but here's what's odd: if I do smartctl -a -d megaraid,x /dev/sda, where x=drive number, for all the other drives, I get smart info. For those three, I get Smartctl open device: /dev/sda [megaraid_disk_11] failed: INQUIRY failed However, if I run any commend with MegaCli64, it sees the drives fine. It's as though smartctl has cached some info, somewhere.... Any thoughts? NOTE: after a good bit of searching online, I found someone's cmts that on *some* cards, the drive number starts at 8. Oh, and when I tried that, I got "enclosure", and the actual drives show at 9.... mark

The install program cannot detect the Xorg X11 libXss runtime library required by the graphical user interface of the product. Contact your system administrator to install the library or install the product on a compliant system. Otherwise, go back and unselect 'Graphical user interface' component. I would love to find an old-fashioned outliner, like the ones that used to exist prior to the modern GUIs. It would make writing structured documents, or organizing thoughts in general, so much more convenient, productive and faster. Ideally it should allow saving files in txt, OO and markdown formats... Does anything like this exist that can run in a terminal window under Centos??

No ack packet for tcp SYN with window scale of 64

I have found a very strange problem. We found that the time of establishing the websocket connection between mobile phone and server was too long. Then I use tcpdump to capture the data and found that the problem maybe has something to do with window scale option in SYN packet. Here is the SYN packet for websocket connection: 55488 → 443 [SYN] Seq=0 Win=65535 Len=0 MSS=1460 WS=64 TSval=570815281 TSecr=0 SACK_PERM=1 But the server did not respond with ack. Then several retransmissions of SYN occured. Finally, the client sent a retransmission of SYN: 55488 → 443 [SYN] Seq=0 Win=65535 Len=0 MSS=1460 SACK_PERM=1 Then the server responded with ack. I also captured other data of HTTP connection and found that the window scale option in SYN packet for HTTP connection is "WS=128". No retransmission occurs in the handshake for HTTP connection. So I just want to know the reason for it. The OS on our server is CentOS release 6.7. The version of kernel is 2.6.32-573.el6.x86_64. By the way, I have also tested websocket connection in centos 5, but no such a problem occured.

kdump operates by booting a fresh kernel to capture the context of a crashed kernel, and so the only way for kdump to dump a kernel is to crash it and cause kdump to invoke its post-crash kernel. Process 1 : How much memory, CPU, I/O and network is currently consuming on linux server Process 2 : How much memory, CPU, I/O and network is currently consuming on linux server Process 3 : How much memory, CPU, I/O and network is currently consuming on linux server and so on and so forth. When should I reboot?

I reboot when I yum update to a new kernel or systemd, which seems to come out about once a month. Should I do it for this week's glibc? Is that "core" enough to justify a reboot or should I wait for the next kernel update? I know the glibc update was mainly to handle the new Japanese calendar, so that shouldn't affect my usage. So my question is more about how shared libraries work and whether anything bad would happen with different forks of running services (mainly the mail suite with dovecot and the various content scanners launched by sendmail) running different versions of the library based on when they were started.

Cockpit within httpd

Folks I'd love to use Cockpit, but I cannot open port 9090 for the access in all cases. I'd like to access it via my usual http port (such as 80) where I'm limited to a single HTTP port. I understand the security implications, and can deal with them later. My attempt was to allow the following URL to access the cockpit functionality: http://xxx.example.com/cockpit (not the real URL) where 'xxx.example.com' is one of the virtual web sites on my server. dracut ipv6 fixed ip

hi, we have successfully implemented at tang/clevis environment for automatically entering luks keys and booting hosts without operator intervention. Now we would like to use this as well on ipv6 networks, but I do not seem to get it to work. I have already posted this issue to the dracut devs github issue tracker ( https://github.com/dracutdevs/dracut/issues/554) but no response so far. Maybe here I will get an aswer. On the ipv6 gateway there comes no ipv6 traffic from the dracut client while on the luks password prompt. Once the system is booted, I can decrypt fine sing the clevis tools and ipv6 (no firewall issue). We are working arround the issue booting clevis in dracut with a ipv4 address and natting the http client to the tang servers on the gateway, but this is suboptimal and makes us maintain an ipv4 presence we neither need nor want. Am I missing something obvious in the dracut conf file maybe? Anyone experience with something similar? Thanks in advance. -- regards, Natxo

Nautilus and umask on CentOS 7 with Gnome3

We have a problem whereby Nautilus is not using the umask setting defined by the user (e.g. when creating directories via the the 'Places' menu). The umask used by Nautilus is 022, but the shell umask (in our case) is set to 002 A quick search seems to suggest that this a common problem, and various methods are suggested to 'fix' this - the only way that appears to work on CentOS 7 is to add 'UMask 002' to the '[Service]' section via a unit file snippet in /etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service.d/ - this works OK - but it makes the umask a global setting for all users, when theoretically, different users may want to have different umask settings Does anyone know the 'proper' way to get Nautilus to use a user's own umask setting ? Hi, For the last ten years or so, I've defined the short hostname in /etc/hostname and the FQDN in /etc/hosts.
