CentOS-5.2 su -l is failing

I am encountering an odd problem with su. Up until quite recently I was able to connect to one of my servers (CentOS-5.2) via ssh as an ordinary user and then, from the shell, perform an $ su -l to obtain root access. Now when I try to do this I see the following: $ su -l Password: su: incorrect password If, instead of I ssh to this machine as the root user ($ ssh -l root host) and enter exactly the same password from the same keyboard then I log in successfully as root. I have made no conscious changes to the target system configuration files and I know that the first method, logging in as a normal user and then su -l to root, was working just a few days ago. Review of the man and info pages does not enlighten me as to what might be wrong. (Semi-OT) Problems with Firefox

List, After I think the last or next to last update to firefox, I started seeing some problems, wherein I no longer have a "back" function on any pages or tabs. Also, I get some kind of strange message.... "Assertion Failed ASSERT:***Search:_installLocation: engine has no file! Stack Trace: 0 ENSURE_WARN(false,_installLocation: engine has no file!.2147500037) 1:()2:()3:()4:90:epsGetAttr([objectObject],hidden)5:906:907:currentEngine() 8:get_currentEngine()9:updateDisplay() 10:init() 11:([object XULElement],0) I realize this is not the proper place for FF related problems, but thought I'd ask if someone else has seen something like this happen. Creating an iso image of a audio CD with K3B

Can you do this? I have not found the options to get this to happen. So far I have seen how to read the Audio CD and make a directory of WAV files with a control file for later burning to CD, but I want an iso image that I can archive and burn audio CDs to use as they get used up.

Postfix header check help

Hi list, I have a requirement for a mail server that only allows email to pass with a particular word in the subject line. Reading the header checks docs for Postfix I thought I may be able to add this rule: !/^Subject: .*dingdong/ REJECT Need to add dingdong to subject line to send Which should reject all mail unless the subject line contains "dingdong". Unfortunately this seems to block all mail from passing. Removing the "!" works as expected and the server allows all mail to pass, unless dingdong is in the subject line which is rejected. Is this rule valid? Or is there a better way to make this work? Thanks Dean

Poor RAID performance new Xeon server?

I have just purchased an HP ProLiant HP ML110 G5 server and install ed CentOS 5.2 x86_64 on it. It has the following spec: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU 3065 @ 2.33GHz 4GB ECC memory 4 x 250GB SATA hard disks running at 1.5GB/s Onboard RAID controller is enabled but at the moment I have used mdadm to configure the array. RAID bus controller: Intel Corporation 82801 SATA RAID Controller For a simple striped array I ran: # mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=0 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 # mke2fs -j /dev/md0 # mount -t ext3 /dev/md0 /mnt Attached are the results of 2 bonnie++ tests I made to test the performance: # bonnie++ -s 256m -d /mnt -u 0 -r 0 and # bonnie++ -s 1g -d /mnt -u 0 -r 0 I also tried 3 of the drives in a RAID 5 setup with gave similar results. Is it me or are the results poor? Is this the best I can expect from the hardware or is something wrong? I would appreciate any advice or possible tweaks I can make to the system to make the performance better. The block I/O is the thing that concerns me as mostly I am serving a 650MB file via samba to 5 clients and I think this is where I need the speed. Plus I am hoping to run some virtualised guests on it eventually, but nothing too heavy. Installing kernel RHEL-5.3 on CentOS 5.2 (x86_64)

Hi I tried to install the kernel Red Hat 5.3 x86_64 (2.6.18-128.el5.x86_64) with the command: rpm -Uvh kernel-2.6.18-128.el5.x86_64.rpm but there is problem with dependecy: ecryptfs-util < 44. How to solve problems with depencies when installing a beta kernel? I'm trying this kernel to see if I get CentOS working with the wireless iw4965. I tried the drivers from Intel, but the compilation failed. Thanks Marcelo

Some people don't know how to conduct themselves on usenet and mailing lists. Despite the mailing list guidelines being crystal clear about no html posting and not top-posting we have people still doing so. People still use text-readers to access the mailing list so you could be denying access to these people by flouting the mailing list guidelines. This is an example of top-posting http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2009-January/070494.html There are legitimate newbies who top-post because they know no different and can acquaint themselves with the mailing list guidelines at http://www.centos.org/modules/tinycontent/index.php?id=16 Maybe the guidelines can updated to say trimming of emails as well and maybe link to examples on Wikipedia of top-posting and bottom-posting. Newbies aside, there are guys still top-posting who have ignored polite offlist messages not to top-post. Its not the time to be nannying people over how to behave on mailing list. RAID level and killing a job

First question - under CentOS 5, if I created non LVM partitions on a server with 6 disks - 2 disks are RAID 1 (OS), how do I remind myself or inquire the type of RAID of the remaining 4 disks (RAID 1 or RAID 5), without having to reboot? Second question - A newly installed server consisting of CentOS 5.2, straight off the DVD, I invoke a command by hand, realize I want to kill it soon after (logged in as root). I issue ps auwx|grep name_of_command, get the PID, and issue kill -9 PID. ps auwx|grep name_of_command is still running. The command is NOT part of any scheduled job. Why won't the process die? How else can I kill it without a system reboot? The command does not get invoked with a script, and is not a script itself - just a standalone binary. I tried CNTL-Z and CNTL-C. I finally killed the terminal it was running from. Nothing works. pkill doesn't work, either. Thanks. Scott, CISSP

I am trying to get timing paramters from a CGI program. date is just a command for example used here. when I do: time { date; } everything is good. when I do: time -o file { date; } I get time -o file { date; } bash: syntax error near unexpected token `}' How do I correctly issue the command with an option for -o file to output the data to a file. acroread = resource hog

Any have trouble with acroread taking up massive cpu and memory? I exited my Firefox browser and the lil bastard was still hogging up my resources. Took up 69% of 4GB, and wouldn't let go, until a kill -9 showed'em, have to do it every time I open a pdf in firefox. Any use Xpdf or something else?

gcc 4.1 and OpenMP?

I was modifying a source to add OpenMP capabilities. I knew that gcc supports OpenMP since version 4.2, so I've compiled a recent (4.3.2) gcc and installed in my home directory, this because gcc shipped with CentOS 5.2 is 4.1. I've then noticed that my executable links /usr/lib64/libgomp.so, installed with gcc 4.1 from CentOS rpms... Is CentOS default compiler OpenMP ready? Bugs in yum update

This is a continuation of the thread: "yum update fails: CentOS 5.2". I installed a fresh Centos 5.2 and ran yum update. It ran correctly, except for these issues: 1. As previously mentioned, after deciding what it is going to do, It doesn't ask if its ok. But if I type y<enter> it reports: Is this ok [y/N]: Downloading Packages: 2. During the long period it is downloading files, it doesn't print anything, giving the impression that nothing is happening. Watching the lights, and using WireShark and ARIN, I determined that it was downloading from the Rochester Institute of Technology. I decided that was good. During the install phase, the expected logging appeared. 3. When it said it was finished, it didn't exit the yum process; I did it with CRTL-C . Mike.

[OT] Remote control of a WinXP machine from a Linux host

Sorry for an off topic post, but a lot of you folks are sysadmins here or there, and just might have a suggestion... ;-) I have a WinXP machine that is to be unattended for a period of 3 years (yes, I know, it sounds ridiculous, but still...). What I need is remote access to it to perform regular system maintenance, virus cleanups, occasional software installations, reboots, config changes, etc. Of course, rdesktop would do it, or vnc server or something else. The problem is that this machine is behind a NAT, and I cannot access it remotely from outside (and I need access from whereever on the planet I may happen to be). Basically, I need to setup some type of ssh tunnelling from XP (machine A) to my static-IP-24/7-high-bandwidth-CentOS server (machine B) and then further to my laptop (machine C, Fedora 10) located elsewhere (possibly behind another NAT, I can't know in advance). I have root access for all three machines (A, B and C). Of course, all three are on different LANs. However, I have never done anything like this before, so I wonder what is the best method of creating such a setup? One of my ideas was to make some script on A which would connect to B once every 15 minutes or so, look for a flagfile, and if present, initiate connection with C directly or through B if necessary. That means, if I want access from C to A, I ssh from C to B and create a flagfile, wait 15 minutes or so, and a rdesktop (or vnc or other) appears on my laptop. In theory. Or is there some other XP-tool that might do what I want out of the box? However, it need be absolutely automatic, there will be nobody around to do anything locally on A once I leave it. Another idea I had was to have machine A running as a virtual machine on a CentOS host (vmware or such would suffice). Then I could easily configure the above A-to-B-to-C scenario, shutdown the virtual A, pull its hard disk file to C, start it locally, perform maintenance, push it back to host A and run it again as a vm. But this is highly complicated, takes too much time and bandwidth, so I hope something simpler is available. Yet another idea is to ask A's ISP to provide a static IP for that machine, or to forward some available port to A, which could be used by rdesktop in some customized fashion. But the ISP may refuse such requests, and I need a robust solution. Yet even another idea is to put another CentOS machine (D) between A and A's ISP (create a local LAN). Then initiate ssh -X connection from C to D (somehow, via flagfile scenario or such), and then rdesktop from D to A over a local LAN. The main problem is NAT, if machine A had a world-accessible IP, I would just rdesktop from C to A, but alas, it doesn't... :-( Any suggestions about the best way of doing this? Thanks, :-) Marko

CentOS 4 update backlog

After BIND update owner changed and restart failed

I just applied the BIND updates. Then I fixed the one file that had a second include of named.ca (remembered that from last time) and did a 'service named restart', and it failed. So off to /var/named/chroot/etc and do a 'chown named:named *' then named started. This apparent changing of file ownership in installing a new set of bind updates so that named cannot access the files seems like something is broken somewhere.

Is there a recent rpm available for hostapd? I found 0.6.0 over at atrpms.net via rpmfind. Actually a more recent ver than available for FC8,9, or 10! But http://hostap.epitest.fi/hostapd/ shows the current version is 0.6.7. And does anyone have this running on Centos? Is there a 'better' AP software? I have the Atheros card in my notebook for this....

This tells me that the easiest way to resolve this issue may be to just "hold" wxGTK at 2.6.3-1 until the next version of audacity is ready for prime time. Anyone know of any other packages that are dependent on wxGTK and need the most recent version? Just wanted to get some thoughts from the list..... We are a public k-12 school and are looking to migrate to a groupware style system for out staff to collaborate better. Dealing with 800x480 displays

Has anyone worked around the display size limit on units like the ASUS eee? They list a 800x480 display resolution, and I have encountered Gnome dialogs that require at least 800x600 to see the <OK> button on the bottom of the panel.

Can sound be redirected from a remote computer to local computer?

I need to redirect the sound from a remote Centos 5.2 computer to my local Centos 5.2 computer. Both are i386 OS. Searching the web and Centos web site has indicated that it is possible but I have not found any information about how to do it. I am currently using ssh and/or vnc to display the remote computer locally. At this point, the sound is being played on the remote computer only. Thanks for any help, David

ZFS on Linux

I am planning to use ZFS on my Centos 5.2 systems. The data I am storing is very large text files where each file can range from 10M to 20G. I am very interested on the compression feature of ZFS, and it seems no other native Linux FS supports it. My question are: Is ZFS stable? How does it scale for very large filesytems, ie, 2TB to 9TB? How is the performance of fuse? I plan to use it on my archive server first, so data reliability is very important Any thoughts or ideas? TIA

Can't update CentOS 5.2

Hi, I've just installed a fresh CentOS 5.2 Now, I run "yum update" and I get: "Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=5&arch=i386&repo=os error was [Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (110, 'Connection timed out')> Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: base. Please verify its path and try again" I have Internet connection, but I cant ping mirrorlist.centos.org and http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=5&arch=i386&repo=os just stalls. Hi! It may be a little OT but i'm searching for a c/c++ programmer for the development of a remote controlled multimedia player that would run under CentOS with Aja OEM card. We'd use this player in our fully automatic TV broadcast system. We currently have a player (developed in house) that works mostly ok on Winblows but it lacks many features like remote monitoring (SNMP or something like that), fault management, etc. The code is not documented and there are problems migrating from Stradis SDM-275 card to SDM-290, from Win2000 to XP, etc. I was thinking that their should be programmers on the CentOS mailing list. Sorry if i bother other list members with my request. We are based in Montréal, Province of Quebec, Canada. Frankly, we have to find a Winblows programmer first to evaluate the documentationless code we have for our current player. With the obligation to go digital and the fact that we may even have to go HD, we'll want to go Linux and get an ultra-stable platform. It would be nice to evaluate if something like VLC or MPLayer could provide the functionality we want too. If there is some project/job/project site, please let me know. Please respond offlist. Yum-updatesd version in reports?

Hi, I've just startted configuring yum-updatesd on all our servers to install updates automatically and it works great. But I don't see anywhere in its config or command line options a way to find which package version was replaced by which. Is this achieveable in any way or should I resort to some home-grown scripting again? Thanks. -Amos

Alle, When we run sa-compile on a CentOS 4 distro (old hardware, Dual Celeron SMP), gcc only uses one CPU when compiling. Update to Centos 5 anaconda kickstart %post bug?

Is there a process for finding status updates to open bugs within Centos? The particular bug I am talking about is 0002329 http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=2329. This was assigned on 01-20-2008 and, as far as I can tell, there's been no action other than it being acknowledged. I've also searched upstream with RHEL and FC and I cannot seem to find a bug report there though complaints of the problem can be found through searching the web. I do see the manual fix for it and will be testing that shortly. I am, however, dealing with a fairly rigid internal legal department that may not welcome a "fix" that's not "official". So I have two questions: 1) Is there an "official" or "accepted" way to inquire about the status of an open bug? 2) With regard to bug 0002329 is this something that has to be fixed upstream so it filters down to centos? When I run this, I have ssh,http checked and have added Kerberos and squid manually below, but when I save it I still get a port 88:tcp added to the /etc/sysconfig/iptables file? What can I use to track what is forcing it to get added? The box is a current CentOS 5x86 server. I was running apache on it with it set to 88, but it has since been moved back to 80. Thanks! jlc
