Hello List I am having a second thing and this time I made sure that I did not hijack any other threads :-) I have a pptp vpn server that works just fine except from dns, I can ping a server and it will resolv but no packages are being received, does anyone have any clues on how to sort this out? I have tried to disable in a xp client ³Use default gateway on remote network² and then add in the dns servers manually in the clients pptp configuration but no difference at all, not even if I then enable the ³Use default gateway on remote network² and leave the dns settings. How to change an executable into a directory

Checking fan state

I just replaced my fan in my nc2400. It was a 5hour job. Had to pull EVERYTHING to get to where they have the fan in the thing. Now I want to know if it is working. It is suppose to be thermostatically controlled, and it takes time to heat up. So how can I find out what Centos knows about the system temp and fan state? It was hard to tell if I put the connector in the right way. At least if that is all I did wrong, I can get to that connector with only pulling the drive....

Hello fellow CentOS'ers- I'm trying to install a package from a not-to-be-named repository (privately operated for some proprietary software). They currently have a package I need but offer multiple versions. However, if I simply 'yum install packagename' it defaults to pulling down the most recent package. I would like to pull down the older version of the package but I'm unable to do so. So, how would you specify version number for a package with two candidates but the same name? Scriptable way to edit yum .repo files?

Hello, Is there a standard programmatic way to manipulate yum configuration files, particularly the .repo files? I want to add things like "priority=..." per repo, or "check_obsoletes=1" to the priorities plugin config. I can cook specific search/append using perl or sed but was wondering whether there is a more elegant way. I found Perl's Conf::INI module but it expects comments beginning with ";", not "#". Obtaining a newer Broadcomm (bcm43xx) driver for CentOS 5

I'm using CentOS 5 (w/all latest updates as of 2008-01-06) on an HP laptop -- in fact, the exact laptop described here: http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Laptops/HP/Pavilion-ze5300_Series Ever since I switched from SHARED to OPEN authentication (and hence from using ndiswrapper to the bcm43xx module, as explained on that wiki page), I've been having packet loss and/or collision on the wireless device, to the point that recently I've needed to plug in to a wired network in order to get yum updates. I'd like to try installing a newer version of the driver, but I'm having a fail on searching for the sources; I don't want to build an entire new kernel. Does anyone have a pointer to those driver sources or better yet to a DKMS or similar package for them?

Video lock up

Can't yum erase/install an app

I am switching the box that I did the HIPL rpm builds over to running from rpms built directly by the HIPL team (http://infrahip.hiit.fi/hipl/release/1.0.4/) I did the 'make uninstall' and then 'yum install hipl-all', but the hipl-firewall rpm did not install. Seems like I have a mess on my system with the various hipfw files. I 'manually' deleted a bunch of them (perhaps a mistake), and then tried 'yum install hipl-firewall' and it reported that it was installed. So I tried a 'yum erase hipl-firewall' and got two errors: hipfw: unrecognized service error reading information on service hipfw: No such file or directory Then I get a 'Removed: hipl-firewall.i386 0:1.0.4-1' and a 'Complete!'. I then do a 'yum install hipl-firewall' and get that it is installed and there is nothing to do.... Well, it is not installed, but there is something in yum that says it is installed. What to do? man yum does not show any options to force the install. So how do I get around this foobar?

xCache install error ($PHP_AUTOCONF?)

Hey Guys I'm trying to install xcache on our web server (php optcode cacher) but I am having the following error. I have download the xcache tar ball, unzipped and when in the unzipped directory attempting to run phpize but it fails with the following error: [root@server1882 xcache-1.2.2]# phpize Configuring for: PHP Api Version: 20041225 Zend Module Api No: 20060613 Zend Extension Api No: 220060519 Cannot find autoconf. Please check your autoconf installation and the $PHP_AUTOCONF environment variable is set correctly and then rerun this script. Ok, $PHP_AUTOCONF doesn't exist so I made it in my bash profile and set to it /usr/local/bin where autoconf is installed too. After logging in and out it didn't work although the environment variable had correct exported. I checked online some people have mentioned you need libtool installed aswell but I have that too (and automake before you ask, all three are installed and have symbolic links in /usr/bin to /usr/local/bin) but this still isn't working and I can't work it out. LDAP Authentication to Lotus Domino?

Has anybody done any authentication to Lotus Domino using LDAP? Having given up on getting system-config-netboot to work (reading the pointers I have received to the wiki, say it is broken), I have the simple question "What is it suposed to do???" I have tried to look at the code, but its written in python and I cant follow the logic. CD burning issues & questions

I have been having some strange results trying to burn CDs under CentOS. I don't think they are hardware related because I have had some success, in fact most of this usually works. I use k3b for most of my CD and DVD writing - it seems to work fairly well (well, except for wrecking my installation a few weeks ago when it crashed my installation and I had to reinstall to get it back, but that's old news). Yesterday, of my work desktop (32-bit), I tried to burn a CD with k3b. The system hung as soon as I clicked on the start button in the burn menu. I did not want another case of wrecked system, so I rebooted (no other way to interrupt it) and all went well, except that I didn't even try to burn the CD. (I used my other, backup desktop, and it worked fine over there - hmm....) Then, last night, on my home desktop (64-bit), which is usually solid as a rock, no problems whatsoever (I said "usually"), I had similar problems, though not quite as bad. I was trying to erase some CD-RWs, and I kept getting errors, both from k3b and cdrecord, claiming that they could not lock the drive for exclusive access (because another process was accessing the device). This is really annoying because I've tried this one several CD-RWs, and they all get the same error. Since k3b doesn't include a facility to add data to an already written CD or DVD unless there's a specific project for it (which I don't have 'cuz the CDs were written under Window$ or with projects I didn't keep). Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks. mhr

Log File Reviewing

I need to review a logfile with Sed and cut out all the lines that start with a certain word, problem is this word begins after some amount of whitespace and unless I search for whitespace at the beginning followed by "word" I may encounter "word" somewhere legitimately hence why I don't just search for "word" only... Anyone know how to make sed accomplish this? Thanks! jlc

Im trying to get a diskless boot set up under CentOS 5.2, and having no luck at all. I am to the point of running system-config-netboot, and whatever information I put in, I get an error message. Responding to the 2nd button on the first popup, which asks for NFS info, I put in the IP address of the current machine (the machine that will hold the boot images for the diskless machine) and the root directory for the diskless machine, viz /diskless/i386/CentOS5.2/root Which has a copy of my root file system, and in particular has a /boot subdirectory. When hitting FORWARD, I get the error message: The diskless subdirectory must be NFS exported and contain a boot subdirectory. Now Ive checked, vsftpd is running, nfs is running, and the above directory (and others) are in the /etc/exports file. I did this several years ago under Fedora, and dont remember having problems like this. Has ANYONE done this recently, and do you remember what you had to do??? Anyone, Fpc v9.3 is a fingerprint database basically. http://www.agcol.arizona.edu/ I have downloaded the pre-compiled Linux binaries for 32 and 64 bit when I try to launch them I receive this error: FATAL ERROR (ruid: null, euid: null, nodeid: null, program: null, version: null, file: graphgdk.c, line: 194) - Can't load default font 8x13 When I click exit the program ends. I have also compiled the source code with the required gtk2, glib2, pango, cairo, atk, fontconfig, freetype2 and I still receive the same error. I am running CentOS 5.2 64 bit - kernel 2.6.18-92.1.13.el5 #1 SMP Wed Sep 24 19:32:05 EDT 2008 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux Can anyone there Help? Hello, I'm still searching for the ideal solution for Matryoshka-ing CentOS, i.e. using it as a guest under qemu/kvm. Given the fact that I'm a victim of this bug http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=2912 (5.2 host/5.2 guest) I'm stuck a little bit, so I tried different debian variants as hosts: sid unstable: ok proxmox VE: ok intrepid ibex (8.10): ok hardy heron (8.04): not ok Using an intel-vt capable dual cpu server / x86_64 arc, with the above effect, what would you recommend to me as a host OS if I wanted to run CentOS 4.x/5.x and debian guests with kvm only? 1. I'm running - or trying to run - BackupPC under Centos-5.2, and have been looking at various BackupPC HOWTOs and tutorials. I see that the "Falko" tutorial at <http://www.howtoforge.com/linux_backuppc> recommends (on page 3) that one should enter one's username, "falko" in this case, as the user in /etc/BackupPC/hosts . Other tutorials suggest one should use the user "backuppc", who was indeed created by "yum install BackupPC". 2. This tutorial also suggests at one point that when exchanging SSH keys one should login to the BackupPC server as backuppc . "Yum install BackupPC" did indeed create a user backuppc on the server, but the entry in /etc/passwd reads backuppc:x:101:104::/var/lib/BackupPC:/sbin/nologin so I cannot login as (or su to) backuppc . Problem setting up diskless boot.

OK, I did this once, several years ago, but I have to do it again, and I cant figure out what this stupid error message is trying to say. I am executing system-config-netboot trying to create a diskless client for a diskless boot I constantly get a popup, with different error messages. I try to 'fix' something, and I get a different popup. The current one says: You must enter directory of the Operating System Software This directory must include the images/pxeboot directories [Errno ftp error] 550 Failed to change directory. Now there is nowhere to ENTER the directory of the OS Software, the popup asks for Operating system identifier Description Select protocol for installation Kickstart Sotware Server IP Address Location So Im at a loss what to do. OT-ish: GPG problem

I'm asking here because it is the best resource I know for knowledgeable people. The problem in question occurs on my Fedora 9 box and Fedora 10 netbook, while another person, Chris, has the problem on a Mandriva 2009 box. Whatever is causing it, that leads me to think that it's not distro-specific. Both of us are using kmail. Kgpg sees and lists all the keys on my keyring. Setting up cryptography for kmail on the boxes in question is where the problem lies. KMail does not appear to be seeing the keyrings. When you try to select your key, the list is empty. If you type in the key ID and ask it to fetch the keys you get an endless back and forward progress bar. As an experiment, on my F10 netbook I renamed the ~/.gnupg folder and recreated it by logging in. I did not copy my keyrings across. I then asked for my key to be imported, and that completed correctly. I then turned to KMail, but still my key could not be seen or used. I think that that experiment rules out any possibility that I had introduced the problem by copying in config files and keyrings from previous versions. Can anyone suggest further lines of enquiry? Crash with qemu: 5.2 host and 5.2 guest

Hi, I'm trying to install a CentOS 5.2 guest with virt-manager/qemu on a CentOS 5.2 system (X86_x64, 3ware 9650SE, 2 x Intel VT capable xeon cpus, 8 GB) Unfortunately I'm getting a crash in the guest install process. (see crash text below). Other systems are installing smoothely, even Windows xp, but the above combination won't install (5.2/5.2). What works well: CentOS 5.2 xen unmodified (i.e. fully virtual) guest, but no luck with qemu/kvm. OT: (a) Biostar or MSI mainboard? (b) all Celeron CPU's OK?

(a) Mark (mhr) suggested I buy a bare bones box, when I reported the problem with the mainboard in this Dell Dimension 2400 box. Possibly I can have the mainboard repaired (and the PSU, if it is also having problems), and if so, I will give this one to my Stepson and go the bare bones box route and have a more powerful box for myself. I looked at two (2) very low end Desktop mainboards in the store. The one that seems the most interesting is the Biostar P4M890-M7 TE (a Socket LGA 775 board). If possible, I would like to verify that CentOS 5 (32 bit) will work properly, out of the box, or with very simple changes. The Chipset is shown as VIA P4M890/VT8237A. The Graphic chip is shown as Unichrome Pro I GP. The NIC chip shown as Realtek RTL8201CL PHY and the Sound Codec is ALC662. It has two (2) PCI slots and I have NICs and Sound Cards I can install, if the onboard stuff doesn't work on Linux. The Graphic is something that must work, out of the box. Searching on CentOS.org I saw things about Realtek NIC chips, but sounds like they can be made to work. Comments on the probability of this mainboard working OK, or not, are most welcome! I have downloaded the Biostar documentation for this mainboard. This mainboard has support for EIDE, which I need for my HD, DVD-ROM and CD-RW drive. (it has IDE & SATA controllers). The other mainboard is the MSI P6NGM-L (MS-7366 Ver. 1.0). This one has NVIDIA GeForce7050 / nForce610i. Video is the NVIDIA GeForce 7050. I am not sure if it has support for EIDE. For Storage Devices, they show PATA and SATA. Will either of those support EIDE? I have much less information about this mainboard. Audio chip is Realtek ALC888. LAN chip is Realtek 8201CL. Both of these mainboards are available locally, and I will not need to order from the states. I am leaning very strongly to the Biostar, and very interested in comments from anyone with experience with these boards, which will be much appreciated. (b) Planning to use a Celeron 2.0 GHz (Retail) CPU. Will CentOS 5 (32 bit) run on all Celeron's? This Dell Dimension 2400 has a 2.6 GHz Celeron and ran well, until the mainboard problem..... "General Error" in Firefox (CentOS 5.2) Video

This is a new instalation of CentOS 5.2 When I go to FireFox and try to watch a Video clip, some files transfer, and then I get the message "General Error" in the video window. I ASSUME some additional software needs to be downloaded, but what from where? Hi Friends, I have configured Postfix mail server on Centos for relaying mails from 5 linux servers (including itself) within the same LAN. The postfix mail server should relay mails from these 5 linux servers for specific domains only. For example hosts 192.168.0.23/24/25/26/27 and the postfix mail server should only be able to receive and send mails from and to example.com,example2.com and example3.com domains only. Upgrade from 4.7 to 5.2 problem with udev and ssl

Hello, Got cocky and decided to upgrade from from 4.7 to 5.2. Have a couple problems I can't figure out. The first is I cannot access webmin securely. I had to use httpd.conf.rpmnew to even get apache to start. Got it running but now I seem to have no secure connection to webmin. Next, I have never seen this before but I don't appear to have problems that I have found. Proxy password questions

Hello All: I'm having a strange issue with the yum proxy settings. It is directly related to passwords containing exclamation points. For example, the following works fine in yum.conf: http_proxy=http://somentlmproxy.somecompany.com http_password=regularpassword However, if the password contains any exclamation points, it will not authenticate properly. E.g., a password such as "TheyKilledKenny!!" will fail, but "TheyKilledKenny??" will work fine. I've tried exporting http_proxy from the command line and escaping the exclamation points: http_proxy=http://klowe:TheyKilledKenny\!\!@somentlmproxy.xxx.com:80 but no success. Any workarounds to get this going? Unfortunately, I do not have any control over the password.

something strange is occurring on what is a new setup CentOS 5.2, KDE via NX When I am in Konsole and I press the 'up arrow' key, I get KSnapshot instead of repeating the last line. I looked at kcontrol and there doesn't seem to be any keybinding to cause that and it's irritating and I can't figure out how to shut it off...can someone toss me a bone here? Craig

Hello guys, our company is going to distribute our software as rpms. I have prepared set Source RPMS which works ok on 64-bit and i386 platform. I want to make our build process more automatic. 1. What is the best way to build 32bit RPMS on 64bit CentOS machine? 2.
