Hi I am trying to grab some files with the command (as example) yum -y install vnc --downloadonly --downloaddir=/tmp but it says the file is already installed. I know that, but I want to download it anyway and store it for later install on another machine (saving the download time later). How do I tell yum to go ahead and download the file? THanks, Jerry

TimeZone Mystery on a virtual dedicated server

Hi, I have a weird problem woth the time zone on my virtual (goDaddy) dedicated server I had to setup the timezone using system-config-date to GMT+7 i am in NY (GMT-5) when i do GMT-5 i get all the times 2 hours ahead seems like there's something im missing here If i add an event to my web app let's say 7:30 - 8:15 , the only way for me to show it right is GMT+7 can anyone help me figure out what am i missing here??? Xen DomU console connection

Dom0 OS=CentOS-5.2_X86_64 Dom1 OS=CentOS-5.2_X86_64 I have a desktop machine running the xen kernel, Dom0. I have created a virtual machine on that host, Dom1. From my console session on Dom0 I can open a GUI console for Dom1 but I cannot resize the actual screen area. I can make the virtual console window larger but the screen stays centered at the same size while the margins increase in width. I would like to simply switch my entire desktop display from the Dom0 to Dom1 (together with the keyboard and mouse of course) and then back to Dom0 again when I am done. I suspect that this is not possible, but if it is then surely someone here will know. If I cannot actually switch desktops between domains then is there another technique available to accomplish much the same thing? I would like to use Dom1 for software development using visual editors and such. Running these inside the virtual console window is not workable, mainly due to the limited display size and the erratic behaviour of the mouse. i386 packages on x64 servers

Hi! I have some servers, all running centos 5.2 x64 with current updates. None of the servers has installed packages that are not part of the centos regular packages. They were installed using the "server" packages at install, therefore there is no X server, GNOME, KDE or any other non-server stuff. However, I recently noted that the servers have the x64 _and_ the i386 versions of some packages installed, for instance: krb5-libs-1.6.1-25.el5_2.1 and pam_krb5-2.2.14-1.el5_2.1. My question is: If I have no 32 bits software installed on these machines, why are such libraries installed? and can they be safely removed from the servers? Thanks in advance. system config report

Long ago when I was an AIX admin we had a script we ran every 6 months or so and it created what we called the "System Book". It had every possible configuration option. While acknowledging that on a whole it was overkill documentation, if we ever had to rebuild the systems we knew *exactly* how the old one was set up to compare it to if we had problems. I'm looking to do something similar for my CentOS boxes. Or better yet, see if someone has already done something similar. I've poked around google and sourceforge on and off for a couple of months but haven't found much. The discussion lately about 'hwinfo' jogged my memory. Anyone know of something like this? A template, even? An old project that hasn't been updated but could be brought up to date? Thanks for any suggestions. Dave

xorg-x11-drv-nouveau for CentOS?

Is there a way to use "Nouveau" (open source Nvidia) driver in CentOS 5 ? "nv" seems to support only the lowest resolutions thru the dvi output (NV44 chip), and I don't like the idea of installing propiertary Nvidia drivers. This way I came to Nouveau. I had a look at some Fedora rpms, but they needed something CentOS obviously doesn't have: # rpm -ivh xorg-x11-drv-nouveau-2.1.6-1.fc8.x86_64.rpm kernel-drm-nouveau = 10 is needed by xorg-x11-drv-nouveau-2.1.6-1.fc8.x86_64 Regards, Timo

IPv6 forwarding and ip6tables

I am running multiple IPv6 subnets here in my testbed. My IPv6 'router' is a Centos box with IPv6forwarding turned on. It is also my RADVD server (over multiple VLans), and Miredo server/relay. I thought I had a simple ip6table setup that protected the box and let it forward. Well I am wrong. I got my previous DNS over IPv6 working on the DNS server, then tried to get it working from another box. After a couple hours fighting with it, I finally figured out that my Centos IPv6 router was rejecting the IPv6DNS queries, not forwarding them. I turned off ip6tables and the DNS lookups worked just fine. So I thought, well Shorewall6 beta is out, let's go with it already. I check out the shorewall discussions and discover you need at least the 2.6.25 kernel for Shorewall6. When I mentioned my dilemma, I was told that "2.6.18 doesn't support stateful IPv6 firewalling at all!" Just great...... When is that Centos 6 going to happen???? :( Anyway, the challenge for now: What do I put into ip6tables so that any IPv6 traffic that comes in any of the vlans on eth1 can go out any of the vlans on eth1?

DNS resolver over IPv6

I have a Centos server that is running BIND and has IPv6 global addresses. I have entered a number of AAAA records into this copy of BIND in a local view and zone (tld is htt). Over IPv4, I have no trouble with nslookup ('nslookup - 127.0.0.1' and 'nslookup - 192.168.128.55'). I get the AAAA records back. But if I try to use the IPv6 address of the system I get a time out. Both from nslookup and from ping6. I setup /etc/resolv.conf as shown at: http://docsun.cites.uiuc.edu/sun_docs/C/solaris_9/SUNWaadm/SYSADV5/p13.html (the only hit I got on configuring resolv.conf for an IPv6 DNS server). I have turned off both ip6tables and iptables so it is not a firewall issue. Even 'nslookup - <ipv6 addr>' does not work. I seem to recall a problem with nslookup supporting udp over IPv6, but ping6 should not have that problem. This is all on the single system running BIND. I figure i got to get that working before worrying about other systems!

2 internet connections and one for backup

I've got 2 internet connections but unfortunately not the same - 6mbit and 1 mbit. My default is 6mbit and I want to create backup connection (1mbit). How can do it? Has anybody done it? My perfect scenario is that my network uses 1mbit if (only) 6mbit fails and it switches automatically. -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Someone hans pointed me at the centos.plus kernel, which is close to what I need, but I still have to add a couple of options. yum cannot find bittorent rpm at dag

I am trying to get the x86_64 isos of CentOS-5.2. I wish to use bittorrent. The last time that I did this I required the bittorent package from Dag's repository. OK, perhaps I wasnt clear in my previous posting. I am looking for either a SRPM for the CentOS 5.2 centos.plus kernel, or more likely, a diff from the kernel at kernel.org. I was pointed to the wiki, which MENTIONED a Source RPM, but didnt point to anywhere to find these for CentOS. All Ive been able to find are ISO's . C5: prevent loading of AHCI in favor of "fakeraid" megaide

Hi, I'm trying to install an old fujitsu siemens econel 50 server. It uses an Intel chipset with ICH6R sata subsystem known as fakeraid. I have configured a Raid 1 with two 160GB hds. FS and Intel both provide a driver called megaide on a driver disk to use fakeraid and here is the problem: - The readme tells me to install with the "nostorage" kernel option and I can load the megaide driver with the driver disk. - in anaconda I only see one disk sda - exactly what I want. - after installation when booting the 92.el5 kernel obviously the ahci driver is used not the megaide, LVM complains about identical PVs on sda and sdb and I can unload megaide while running the server - so megaide is not used upon reboot but ahci - megaide is inside the initrd but - probably because ahci loads first - not used Question: How can I prevent the ahci driver to load after installation? Thx Rainer PS: I know the pros and cons of fakeraid - I want to use it. Plz no discussion about this.

Beginner - need suggestion to improve BACKUP script

Now i am trying to write a script to backup /etc and /var to my home dir in a separate folder and then backup the home dir to usb drive using rsync. My goal is when i will run the script it will output status to standard output in form of bold messages with time and simultaneously logs to another file in /root dir. I have labled the usb drive as "usb-mass-storage". the script runs fine according to my requirement. Now i need suggestion to improve the script further. Something to test in php 5.2

Since people are testing php 5.2 in the CentOS repo - here's a bug I found in my own build of 5.2 that probably is a general php bug - but is worth testing on the CentOS testing packages. If using imagefttext with a Postscript type 1 font - $lstring="©" . date("Y") . " My Real Name"; or $lstring=html_entity_decode("©", ENT_COMPAT, "UTF-8") . date("Y") . "My Real Name"; both result in a ' instead of a © when rendered on the image. Works fine with a TrueType font, only an issue with Type1 fonts. Well, I only tried the second (with html_entity) with a ttf font, but point is it doesn't do what it is suppose to do with ps fonts.

Hey guys, I'm a bit of a beginner (understatement!) with shell scripting and seek help! I am setting up our new squid proxy. Its working a treat and squidGuard is the icing on the cake. But, I am trying to write a shell script to search through our black list category's for squidGuard and remove the parsed value; Scenario: /some/directory/where/blacklist/is/stored contains about 40-50 folders called, adult, gambling, banking, warez etc. There is a folder for each blocking category (and in each folder is two files, urls and domains, standard stuff for web filtering!) I have a script to search through /some/directory/where/blacklist/is/stored and look at each text file trying to find someblockedsite.com and remove it. My LAN is behind a Netgear router, which does NAT. On the CentOS server I have fail2ban running. This morning my router reported 3 different IPs attempting to send UDP packets to port 38950, Since each address is only seen 4-5 times, I presume that fail2ban took over after that. GRC reports that ports are stealthed (port 143 was open, but is now closed), but then: Unsolicited Packets: RECEIVED (FAILED) — Your system's personal security countermeasures unwisely attempted to probe us in response to our probes. While some users believe that "tracking down" the source of Internet probes is useful, experience indicates that there is little to gain and potentially much to lose. The wisest course of action is to simulate nonexistence — which your system has failed to do. Your counter-probes immediately reveal your system's presence and location on the Internet. So, two questions really. First, what should I be looking for on the router, to turn off this 'tracking down' activity? Then, I want to read from my own IMAP server when I'm away from home. Fasttrack Repo on CentOS 4

A quick question on the fasttrack repo which is now up to date with upstream. Why is the fasttrack repo not in the main CentOS-Base.repo file but contrib which has never had anything is included in the main CentOS-Base.repo file? The goal of CentOS is to be binary-compatible with upstream so fasttrack is "more important" in this regard than contrib. Upsteam ships with the main channels as well as fasttrack. As CentOS includes the repos in one repo file rather than having separate files, this tradition should be considered for fasttrack as well. Regards, Vandaman.

Question on USB to CF device

I have this USB to CF device I tried to plug in today. Below is dmesg output when I plug it in. I was hoping it would look just like a USB thumbdrive. Is there something special I would have to do to be able to read the USB to CF device? Looks like its trying to make it /dev/sdd but I continue to get the errors at the end. I would like to be able to check my bank account while we are on holiday. I know the bank's site is encrypted from the start - the login page is https and Verisign-trust encrypted - but is there any risk in using public wireless networks for jobs like this? It sounds secure enough, but maybe I'm paranoid.... Anne

FYI: IBM Netvista locking up

Hello, Having not been able to run a kernel without locking up since 2.6.9-34.0.2.EL, I think I have found the 'fix'. There are numerous post about this and all suggest its related to ACPI. For me, its APIC. I added the following to grub.conf: noapic apic=off. Been up now 4 days, 22 mins. running 2.6.9-78.0.8.EL. Previously I could get maybe 4 - 6 hours before locking up. Another thing I noticed is that eth1 was on interrupt 9, the same as ACPI. I also changed the interrupt for ACPI in CMOS to 10. I'm happy as a pig in slop!!! I may now upgrade to 5.2.

Linux backup help

Hi All; I'm awaiting a new linux laptop that will be my primary work machine. I want to implement a strategy that allows me as easily as possible to revert back to a former state. My primary concern is a scenario where I apply system updates and it breaks something that for me is critical. I wonder if a simple rsync script would work. If so, here's what I'm thinking: 1) updates are available so I execute the rsync script which pulls any updated files from my laptop to a backup server/drive 2) apply updates 3) if something breaks (even if I can no longer login) I boot the laptop, run the rsync script in the opposite direction (push files from the backup drive to the laptop) I assume that if I were to execute step 3 above that my system would be in the exact state that it was before I ran the updates. Is this a correct assumption ? Are there better approaches ? Thanks in advance..

yum update via NX connection?

Somewhere in the process of doing a yum update from a terminal window open in an NX/freenx desktop session, the whole session blew up - perhaps when ssh restarted or when freenx was updated. The yum update did not complete beyond that point and the session was gone when I reconnected. Is that supposed to happen? (Centos 5.x) -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

Missing CentOS 4.7 update?

Unless I'm mistaken, does it look like Centos 4.7 is missing an update released on December 3rd 2008? The tmpwatch utility recursively searches through specified directories and removes files which have not been accessed in a specified period of time. tmpwatch is typically enabled and configured to clean up directories used for temporarily holding files, such as, for example, the /tmp directory. This updated tmpwatch package includes fixes for the following bugs: * tmpwatch unnecessarily reported a "No such file or directory" error whenever a file was deleted before tmpwatch accessed it. Gnome Desktop Session Save?

I seem to recall that at one time with CentOS I had the ability to save my gnome desktop and open applications, like terminal, when exiting. The effect was such that when I logged on to a new session those applications would open automatically for me. Is my memory faulty? If not, then has this facility been removed? Alternative to audacity

What's a good, gui-based sound editor as an alternative to audacity (since that is not working right now due to conflicts in the gtk libraries in rpmforge)? CentOS, PHP, Basic GIS

I have no experience with GIS whatsoever. I really know squat about it. I'm currently working on a project to plot locality data for wildlife on a map of Shasta County. This is for a new herpetological club that hopes to track strength of our local herp populations, since it seems evident that in the last 20 years we lost one species of frog and are close to losing another (probably less than 100 left and they don't seem to be successfully breeding) and the declines were known, but the extent of the declines was not known well enough until it was too late. We want to try and prevent that with other species in our county by keeping records of where they currently are and where they use to be but are no longer found. When we see what appears to be shrinking range, we can investigate and if need be, request surveys by wildlife management before it is too late. Basically - the data will be plotted as a grid of regular hexagons. When locality information (museum record or photo voucher record in our own database) exists, the hexagon the record sits in gets drawn a pretty color (depending on type and age of records). I have it working on a raster (jpg) map where I guessed the latitude/longitude borders - working well enough with sample data that I know my php code works, but while it is ballpark accurate I need to do it with maps of known values. Quick and dirty option - obtain (possibly pay for) a large (at least 2k pixels wide) raster map with known lat/lon borders that has the county outline, major lakes and rivers, nothing else. The maps could be made and then resized for web view. The major problem with that model is that drawing colored hexagons near the county border and near rivers will make it more difficult to see them, thus making it harder to interpret the map. What I would prefer to do - Draw my data hexagons on a blank slate [ via imagecreate(width,height) function), then draw the county border on top of that, and then on top of that either draw the lakes/rivers and/or basic topographical lines. My preference obviously includes getting data sets for those things (county border, lakes/rivers, topography) in a format that I can parse with php to draw them with gd. My county does have some GIS data available: http://www.shastagis.co.shasta.ca.us/gissearch/search_new.aspx I don't have a clue how to get that data into format useful for drawing with gd via php. Anyone have experience with this? Can anyone recommend a (preferably free) Linux GIS program that works on CentOS that could potentially convert data files into format useful for drawing with gd? I don't need to get fancy with zoom, rotate, etc. capabilities - just a basic static flat map output. Thanks for any suggestions. I may try to find a "GIS for dummies" type book, though I've generally not been fond of dummy books, I kind of feel like one when it comes to GIS.

Fully up-to-date CentOS 5.2 and Firefox browser. A previous thread had a problem with plugins disappearing. I've discovered, by accident, a causal relationship. Running a Thunderbird mail client (could happen with others? Haven't tested with Evolution yet.) I click a link that opens the browser. BANG! The plugins.dat is "emptied". Restored from my rsync backup, repeat, BANG! "Empty" again. Now, if the browser is already open, NP. Anyone can confirm? Known problem? If not, I'll post bugs in the appropriate places. TIA. -- Bill

Hi list, I have to build vpn server for 1500 clients. No encryption necessary. can anyone please recommend me vpn server. I do not have experience on vpn. I have tested openvpn on my test setup, & its working fine. I want to check if there any other vpn server available. I have not checked but can pptp vpn be usefull?
