Creating a controlled local repo

Hi all, I've been thinking about creating a local repo for our to-be CentOS-park (we're currently in the process of migrating from RHEL3 to CentOS5). As we need to control all updates being applied (think WUS, Windows Update Server) because of special software being run on servers and clients, we must check first that our molecular modeling software doesn't bite the grass should eg X, the kernel (and breaking the proprietary nvidia gfx-drivers in the process) etc be updated in a "non-approved" way. Therefore I've planned to create a local repo on one of our servers, share /var/cache/yum, set keepcache to 1 on that server and have it reposync periodically (like once a week) with CentOS Base, Extras, rpmforge and so on. On the clients I'd disable all standard repos, and only have the clients yum update from the aforementioned local repo server. Would this work? Or is there a cleaner/nicer/better/simpler way to do this? Gotchas' maybe? Any feedback is appreciated. KDE Versions in CentOS ?

DHCP static hosts and subnet configuration

Hi all. I have set up a DHCP server with multiple subnet configurations (let's say subnet A and B). Within that I have declared pools and static hosts addresses. Now, if I have set up a static host entry (with fixed-address) in Subnet B for a specific machine and try to connect to Subnet A with that NIC (where it should obtain an address from the range), this does not work unless I add a static host entry for that machine to the Subnet A declaration, too. I even have to assign a fixed-address, there. I just want the NIC to clain it's address from the range on Subnet A and to assign a fixed address on Subnet B. Best Regards Marcus

Replacement for Intel SDS2 Motherboard

Alle, We have recently had one of our office servers go south. The hardware was an Intel SDS2 motherboard (EATX), Dual Intel PIII 1.4GHz FC-PGA2-L2 512KB, 3GB (6x512MB) 168 pin DIMM, SDRAM 133MHz/PC-133-ECC with 1x3Ware 7006-2 and 2x3Ware 7506-4LP RAID controllers. The OS was RHEL3. Apparently, according to the beep codes, there has been an FRB failure. I've migrated most of the services (mail,web,proxy,samba,mysql,mailman,home directories) to an interim box running CentOS 5.2. At a minimum, I need to replace the motherboard and CPUS (I'm told they are unrecoverable). All the remaining hardware I plan to re-use, as well as moving from RHEL to CentOS. Does anyone have any recommendations on replacement motherboards with CentOS 5.2 in mind, along with the re-usable hardware requirements? Best Regards, Camron -- Camron W. I need to verify hardware compatibility (especially ethernet and SATA) prior to making a purchase decision, and reckon that seeing what's included with the installer would be the most direct way. Slow NFS writes

I guess I'm sort of surprised and I expected better performance I have a new server set up with RAID 10 drives (6) Repeated a number of times and though I am clumsy with stop watch timing, these numbers appear to be close enough for government work... Server, CentOS 5.2 and updated earlier today, just installed a week ago. Client, Macintosh G4, OS X 10.4.11 NFS Mount is done with the following options... -P (privileged ports) intr -r=32768 -w=32768 I tried doubling the size of the read/write windows to 65536 but it seemed to make little difference. Task, Read / Write 648 Megabyte Photoshop file (PSD) Win2K = Win2K server (slow), RAID 5, Symantec EndPoint (ugh), retiring this server AFP = Netatalk from new CentOS Server SMB = Samba from new CentOS Server NFS = see above options, same CentOS Server Copy To Win2K AFP SMB NFS 1m40.053s 0m22.566s 0m23.817s 2m11.849s Copy From Win2K AFP SMB NFS 1m34.478s 0m20.709s 0m20.823s 0m23.487s NFS read performance was slightly slower than AFP/SMB but the write performance was poor. I suppose that the answer is not so important because if the performance was equal to AFP and/or SMB, they'd probably just use AFP anyway but I did want to register my shock (or my ignorance). Craig

RAID on Email Server

I have an email server running Exim, Dovecot, Spamassassin, Clam, etc. on Centos 4.x 32bit. On occasion I have disk I/O problems. Its handling several domains and alot of email. Its currently on a single SATA drive. I am thinking of moving too 3 drives with RAID 1 for redundancy. RAID 1 will help me on reads but do nothing on writes as I understand. I am thinking the majority of my I/O is read though not? I imagine quotta checks and all that being done and everytime a user checks there email every message in the inbox must be read. I guess I am asking if RAID 1 will help my I/O problem much? Finding the correct ext3-fs dm/LVM?

Delete all mail users data (mail server)

Hi Please I would like to delete all users date mail (not accounts) in my mail server box. I using Centos 5 and Virtualmin with postifx (maildir) and dovecot and sasl auth. Centos 5 and Driver Disks

Hi, I am trying to install CentOS 5.2 on a Dell PowerEdge R905, and a problem that you run into is that the DVD Drive on the system is not recognized by the kernel. I have done some searching on the web and found http://kbase.redhat.com/faq/FAQ_103_13121.shtm and obtained the driver disk that it mentions. Having followed the instructions I can see and select the driver disk image but the install thinks there are no appropriate drivers in the image. Can someone please confirm or deny that I should be able to use a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Driver with CentOS 5 without issue ? It isn't a big deal as I will try a Network based install or use a USB DVD drive but I just want to confirm if using a RHEL 5 Driver Disk should work :) Thanks, and have a nice day

Problems with Thunderbird

On new CentOS 5.2 installation (and ugradation before config the diferent programs I use), I'm having problems with Thunderbird 2.0.0.17. Problem 1: I configured my e-mail account (as I have in my old machine) and I have no access to my pop3 and/or smtp servers. I write my user for the access, but thunderbird no ask my password anytime. Problem 2: I installed lightning, but I can't add any new calendar to it (local or remote). Does anyone have these problems or knows how to solve them? Regards

One thing that we are often blamed for is trying to stifle conversations and to discourage people from commenting / contributing / encouraging conversations. And that cant be further from the truth, really. We are all pro-community ( and when I say we, I mean everyone - including the contributors, developers, admins, users, abusers and hey upstream too ). However, one thing that does get in the way, often, and something that we all feel creates a higher 'noise' ratio is conversations on this list about semi-related stuff, but not something that directly contributes to the general users of CentOS. Conversations that specifically address four areas: - technologies - best practices - deployment strategies and tools - management strategies and tools And to better cater to these conversations, as well as further encourage such content, we'd like to propose creating a 'centos-tech' list. How to view djvu files?

Greetings to everyone! On Fedora I used to use djvulibre package for djvu files, but I cannot seem to find this in any CentOS repositores out there. Google also does not help, nor searching list archives. :-( I have found the .rpm file for RHEL 4, but when I tried to install it (hoping that it just might work) rpm refused to install with the error: file /usr/share/mimelnk/image/x-djvu.desktop from install of djvulibre-3.5.17-1.el4.rf conflicts with file from package kdelibs-3.5.4-16.el5.centos I' out of ideas. CGI configuration - second post

This is my second request for help with this problem. I have followed the suggestions given the first time and made some progress but I still have one final problem/question. I have two CGI scripts that don't work. One is the standard Set-Cookie, examples can be found all over the net, that sets a cookie and prints "Your cookie name is set." The other is an automatic installation script that comes from commerce-cgi.com and is for installing their CGI shopping cart. Both of these scripts are now located in /var/www/cgi-bin/ and the folder and the scripts are set to apache:apache 755. BTW a setting of root:root also fails exactly the same way. If I run either of these scripts from a browser using www.domain.com it fails. If I run it from a browser using www.domain.com/cgi-bin/install.cgi or www.domain.com/cgi-bin/techtest.cgi it works. I have tried using a one line index.shtml file with that one line being either  or  and they both fail. They do find and execute the script. The set cookie script prints the "Your cookie name is set." message OK but the cookie is not sent to the browser. The install script loads the first HTML page ok but does not load the second page. I had a friend-of-a-friend IT guy that I trust look at everything. He hasn't found anything obvious. If he tries to run either of these scripts from his computer, it works OK. Can someone here help me understand why this is happening? Mel PS posts in other online places (as suggested here) did not get any replies.

avahi and mDNS

Trying to figure out how to make it work. Seems as though it should be pretty easy. installed package (from yum search) avahi-compat-libdns_sd.i386 : Libraries for Apple Bonjour mDNSResponder compatibility. /etc/nsswitch.conf altered line so it reads, hosts: files dns mdns mdns4 started avahi-dnsconfd service (don't know that it's needed) restarted avahi-daemon service but the syslog says... Oct 17 00:07:41 srv-adv avahi-daemon[12618]: WARNING: No NSS support for mDNS detected, consider installing nss-mdns! and there is no package that I am aware of called nss-mdns, at least yum search doesn't turn up anything other than the avahi-compat-libdns_sd that I installed above. Problems with firstboot in CentOS 5

I'm trying to customize the firstboot process in CentOS 5 and have come across a few issues that are driving me nuts. I'm sure they are all upstream issues, but I don't have a RHEL 5 system to verify them. I had these customizations working in CentOS 4, but things that used to work then don't work now. The main problem is that you can't validate user input. This problem can be easily seen in the firstboot "Create User" module. If you are in this screen, deliberately enter mismatched passwords. You will get a warning that the passwords do not match, but when you click OK to dismiss the warning you are taken to the next screen. In CentOS 4, firstboot would stay at the current screen until all user input had been validated. If you look at the underlying Python code, when you returned "None" from the apply method it would not exit the module in CentOS 4, but it does in CentOS 5. I also can't get the firstboot Display module to load. It ships with "skipme = True", but setting it to false or removing that line altogether does not show the module. It appears to me that there a lots of issues with firstboot in CentOS 5. Actually, in my environment (~40 desktops), CentOS 5 has been far less stable than CentOS 4 (mostly Gnome issues with Terminal windows crashing and window "flickering"). I've reported some of these issues before on this list. My servers seem to be rock stable, though. Anyway, for now I will have to live with these issues. Can I report these issues in the Red Hat bugzilla database or do I need to be a RHN subscriber to report bugs against RHEL5? I suspect (but have not verified) that these issues have been addressed in Fedora already. Alfred

Hi All, I have a strange problem that I don't understand. I have an access file which has the following line: 168.144.250.215 OK # xsmtp02.mail2web.com Yet email from this IP address is getting rejected. From my log file Oct 15 21:52:33 mx01 sendmail[10569]: ruleset=check_relay, arg1=xsmtp02.mail2web.com, arg2=168.144.250.215, relay=xsmtp02.mail2web.com [168.144.250.215], reject=553 5.3.0 OK # xsmtp02.mail2web.com Is this because I have commented out dnl FEATURE(delay_checks)dnl in my sendmail.mc? What is the ruleset check_relay actually doing in this case. I have seen other cases where it rejected a message but always with a useful message. why is there a reject=553 code but with an OK after it? I think the label of "system-admins" for a second list is going in the right direction. Maybe something a bit more specific, like CentOS-sysadmin-advanced? Not the best name, but conveys my idea. Dear ALl, I have the following live setup . Centos 5.1 running as a Mail and DNS server with the following software Sendmail ver MailScanner ver squirrel mail clam av spamassassin mailwatch we have about 250 mail users all with no shell and every thing is working perfectly fine now i wd like to know the following . 1) if i have a copy of my /etc/passwd file and the /etc/skel/shadow file and if my current HDD crashes .. now if i make a new centos server with all the above software and jus copy the password n shadow file in the right directories will all the users able to login into the system as before. or is anything more required to be done. To explain more clearly if my current hdd crashes i can get up a new centos machine but creating all the 250 + users wd be a big problem specially the passwords. 2) i would like to also know about MX records i mean DNS server having MX with same priority n MX with different priority i right now have a primary n secondary mail server that is dns server with different MX records and its workin fine if i have 2 servers with same MX priority do i need to create the smae users on both my centos servers so tht if one server fails othe one is operational . i do presume the above is corect or is there any other way apprecite your help regards Fabian -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Compared to some tech lists I subscribe too this one is pretty much always on the topic of some aspect of using CentOS effective and efficiently. If some people really have problems with the degree of latitude extended to subjects here then perhaps an appropriate solution is to set up a list called centos-strict and allow those that have strong feelings on the matter of appropriateness, whatever that turns out to mean, to subscribe there. Once a day a digest of the centos-strict list could be posted to this list, in a fashion similar to that done for CentOS announcements. So that topics of interest discussed there would still reach a wider audience. The existing centos list is pretty much established as the first port of call for a new contributor. snmptrapd -A option deprecated?

Alle, The man page for snmptrapd (CentOS5.2/net-snmp-5.3.1-24.el5_2.1) *shows* the -A option (to append the output to file) is still valid, but it is not. snmptrapd -h omits the option and doesn't show an alternate flag. The option is still valid for snmpd. /etc/snmp/snmptrapd.options looks like this: OPTIONS="-A -Lf /var/log/snmptrapd.log -p /var/run/snmptrapd.pid" Does anyone know if this option is still available? Seeking advice about auth/home serving

Hi, I'm currently using nis/nfs3/autofs in a small network (20 boxes), and planning on using a more secure/elegant method. The thing is, which solution to adopt ? The network is mainly composed of Centos boxes, and a couple MS/Win ones. ldap/kerberos/nfs4 ? Directory Server ? Anything else ? Another point is, we have several servers with a local /data. Is there any solution to make each /data accessible to each server without having to maintain an awful fstab list per server ? (no way to deploy gfs). Regards, Laurent.

Postfix problem

Hi I have a CentOS 4.2 server with postfix. The problem I'm having is that postfix insists on using $myhostname in the from field even if I instruct it to use $mydomain in /etc/postfix/main.cf or even if I hard code the domain name into $myorigin. What am I missing? BTW: postconf shows output shows that $myorigin is configured to use $mydomain, or the domain name itself ... -- ttyl Paolo

Rebooting CentOS 5.2 XEN Guest

All, I have CentOS 5.2 XEN guests running on a CentOS 5.2 host. At one time when I issued an 'init 6' in one of the XEN guests it rebooted Now it seems to halt but virt-manager shows it as still running and the only way to get the guest to boot is to destroy the virtual machine and start it again. Unfortunately I didn't notice precisely when this change in behavior occurred, I believe it was the last 'yum update' that included a new XEN kernel, but I cannot say for sure. Has anyone else noticed this change in behavior? Any solutions to restore the older behavior, being able to 'init 6' the virtual machine was very useful. Thank you, Brett

How can I free the disk space after compiling kernel

Hi, I have recompiled my kernel and updated it to kernel-2.6.27. However, I found there are no more than 1G disk space left for my jobs. How can I free my disk space but in the same time keep all the compiled kernel modules (*.ko files) here? Can I remove the *.o files created by kernel compiling? Are there any commands to help me achieve this? Thanks a lot, Ian

formatting large volume

I just got a new server with a Dell MD-1000 SAS unit and 6-750 gigabyte drives which are now initializing in RAID 10 which will give me just about 2 terabytes. I vaguely recall reading that fdisk wasn't suitable for partitioning and wonder if I shouldn't be using partd instead. I am also wondering if I should use lvm or just mkfs to create the filesystem. Anyone have suggestions before I blunder in? Thanks Craig
