Seeking advice about auth/home serving

Hi, I'm currently using nis/nfs3/autofs in a small network (20 boxes), and planning on using a more secure/elegant method. The thing is, which solution to adopt ? The network is mainly composed of Centos boxes, and a couple MS/Win ones. ldap/kerberos/nfs4 ? Directory Server ? Anything else ? Another point is, we have several servers with a local /data. Is there any solution to make each /data accessible to each server without having to maintain an awful fstab list per server ? (no way to deploy gfs). Regards, Laurent.

Postfix problem

Hi I have a CentOS 4.2 server with postfix. The problem I'm having is that postfix insists on using $myhostname in the from field even if I instruct it to use $mydomain in /etc/postfix/main.cf or even if I hard code the domain name into $myorigin. What am I missing? BTW: postconf shows output shows that $myorigin is configured to use $mydomain, or the domain name itself ... -- ttyl Paolo

Rebooting CentOS 5.2 XEN Guest

All, I have CentOS 5.2 XEN guests running on a CentOS 5.2 host. At one time when I issued an 'init 6' in one of the XEN guests it rebooted Now it seems to halt but virt-manager shows it as still running and the only way to get the guest to boot is to destroy the virtual machine and start it again. Unfortunately I didn't notice precisely when this change in behavior occurred, I believe it was the last 'yum update' that included a new XEN kernel, but I cannot say for sure. Has anyone else noticed this change in behavior? Any solutions to restore the older behavior, being able to 'init 6' the virtual machine was very useful. Thank you, Brett

How can I free the disk space after compiling kernel

Hi, I have recompiled my kernel and updated it to kernel-2.6.27. However, I found there are no more than 1G disk space left for my jobs. How can I free my disk space but in the same time keep all the compiled kernel modules (*.ko files) here? Can I remove the *.o files created by kernel compiling? Are there any commands to help me achieve this? Thanks a lot, Ian

formatting large volume

I just got a new server with a Dell MD-1000 SAS unit and 6-750 gigabyte drives which are now initializing in RAID 10 which will give me just about 2 terabytes. I vaguely recall reading that fdisk wasn't suitable for partitioning and wonder if I shouldn't be using partd instead. I am also wondering if I should use lvm or just mkfs to create the filesystem. Anyone have suggestions before I blunder in? Thanks Craig

Problem building Perl net-snmp

Hi I'm trying to build the perl modules of net-snmp-5.4.2. Everything seems to work fine until "make test"[1]. The problem with "DynaLoader.pm" seems to be an old one. The machine is Centos 5.2 i386 I'm trying to build instead of using the one available in the repos because I'll build in other platforms and also in nagios-plugins. Mass installs of desktop systems on identical machines

Hi, I'm running a small Linux consulting business here in a group of small villages in the South of France (http://www.microlinux.fr) I'm using CentOS for everything, servers as well as desktops. The desktop installs are usually highly customized. My approach is to list the client's needs, find the corresponding applications and then install these, to avoid the bloat and increase usability. So far, this approach worked quite well. One complete install and configuration takes about 4 hours, depending on various factors such as bandwidth (internet is not very fast in our remote places here) and sometimes exotic hardware that is tricky to configure. Yesterday I had a conversation with the boss of a computer store in town. One of his standard PC models (desktop) is an ACER (PIV dual core, 3 GB RAM, 320 GB HD, ATI card) shipped with Windows Vista, and sold for a price of 315 euros. He told me he would be very interested to sell these machines with Linux installed, as this would allow him to lower the price. Now I wonder: 1) Say I want to install my own customized version of CentOS on it, I usually charge a fixed amount of 240 euros for installing and configuring a complete desktop, tailored to the customer's needs (average: 4 hours of work = 60 euros / h). But I think that this is not what's expected here (neither the price nor the amount of work). How would it *technically* be possible to replicate these installs as easily as possible? The hardware is always the same, so I wonder: I have a vague idea about disk images (to be more precise: I know disk images well as far as burning CDs on the commandline is concerned, or when it comes to installing an OS in VirtualBox using the .iso)... but is there a way to somehow transform an existing install into a disk image, and then simply copy these over to all the other machines? (I've never done this) 2) Otherwise, go for a more mass-oriented distro like Ubuntu, Mint or the likes? What speaks for it: they can be installed very easily, insert the CD or the DVD, fill in the form (username, password, hostname, there you go). On the other hand, I've always been careful about picking my applications in a "best of the breed" way, and I would feel like a traditional taylor working for C & A. 3) Let's not forget about the users who are going to buy this. Whereas folks can always be expected (more or less) to "administrate" their own Ubuntu install, this looks less obvious with CentOS. Or let's say: forums.centos.org is not exactly a newbie forum, at least compared to Ubuntu. I guess your average newbie will not be very pleased with the prevailing tone of competent techno-laconism (compared to Ubuntu or the likes). I'd be curious to read your suggestions about this. App Question.

Hi list!! Got a question, and I can't find a good answer for, so I figured i'd post here. I'm working on a project that involves a number of smaller apps to be developed, and run. In order to build this overall application, I'm trying to find a web based app that I can use to manage the entire process. I need to be able to create the basic app, and then to test the app, and then to run the app in a production environment. I need to be able to schedule when the app is tested/run in the production system, as well as be able to track the status of the test/production app. My overall system will have 100's of these smaller child apps. Has anyone heard of, or have any pointers to any kind of webbased app that I can use (open source) to manage this entire kind of process. I would prefer a web based app, that runs on a LAMP platform to manage this overall process.... Thanks

Sendmail rbl - Need to bypass rbl for one local address

Here are the details: Installed package: GeoIP.i386 1.4.4-1.el5.centos Repo: CentOS Extras Priority for CentOS Extras repo: 1 "yum update" wants to replace the above package with the following: Package: geoip.i386 1.4.5-1.el5.rf Repo: rpmforge Priority for rpmforge: 15 And yes, the following is already in the priorities.conf [main] enabled=1 Why does yum try to replace the package from a repo with higher priority? creating a user from an RPM package

What wizardry do you guys use in the SPEC file when creating/deleting a user from an RPM package? The RPM guide doesn't seem to mention it, or if it does, I missed it. Alternatively, if you could point me to a package or a spec file that does this, I'd be much obliged. USB external HDD error messages

Hi - relatively inexperienced user here. I installed CentOS 5.2 yesterday (http install via a mirror, worked brilliantly), as well as a new Seagate 1Tb USB external HDD (from the new Xtreme line), for backup/media storage. Using fdisk I put two primary partitions on the Seagate, /dev/sde1 and /dev/sde2 (roughly half the drive each). Then I used mkfs.ext3 on both to create ext3 filesystems on those partitions. My fstab entries look like so: /dev/sde1 /mnt/seagate1 ext3 rw,user,noexec 0 0 /dev/sde2 /mnt/seagate2 ext3 rw,user,noexec 0 0 I copied some data onto /dev/sde1 and went to bed. Centos 5x ipv6 sendmail smtps

Hi all, I'm working my way through v6ing our network. I have a mail server with the default dovecot/sendmail configuration working happily for pop3, pop3s, imap, imaps, smtp, and smtps on v4. I have managed to get all but smtps working on v6. Yum and case-sensitivity

Hi List, On one of our servers (CentOS 4 32 bit), we have the dag repo enabled. Yesterday morning during a yum update, yum replaced the CentOS package "perl-DBD-MySQL" with one from dag, "perl-DBD-mysql". For whatever reason, the two packages differ, in that only one of them (the CentOS built one) includes: /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.5/i386-linux-thread-multi/Mysql.pm /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.5/i386-linux-thread-multi/Mysql/ Statement.pm I've excluded the dag version in our yum.conf so it won't re-apply it and break perl code that has "use Mysql;", but I'm confused as to why yum saw fit to replace the package, and, why it did so yesterday. (This box has not had any packages added or removed, outside the standard 'yum update', for many months; and the only repo other than CentOS-managed ones it he dag one.) Bug? Expected behavior?

Weird problem in PHP 5.1.6/possible bug

I hit a weird problem with the default PHP 5.1.6 on CentoS 5.2. It seems the default 5.1.6 PHP on CentOS has a bug in the functions escapeshellargs/escapeshellcmd: it "gulps" any special (non-ASCII) characters, so that they are missing from the output. I have been assured that this does not happen on other 5.1.6 or newer on other Linux distributions. I don't see this behavior with the exact same $LANG setting (en_US.UTF8) on CentOS 4. Moreover the behavior is different when running the script via console or webserver. If I run on console with my $LANG setting of en_US.UTF8 I get correct output if the input is UTF-8 (which is still incorrect, if the encoding doesn't match it should output garbage and not "nothing"). Via webserver I still get no output with the same characters and encoding of the page set to UTF-8. Could others check on what they have available (other PHP, other distributions) and tell the results? a test page: <? $test = "äöüÄÖÜß"; print $test; print "<br>\n"; print escapeshellarg($test); print "<br>\n"; $test = "Ã¤Ã¶Ã¼ÃÃÃÃ"; print $test; print "<br>\n"; print escapeshellarg($test); ?> It will output German umlauts in ISO-8859-1 and UTF-8. Depending on your $LANG setting and the coding set to the webpage you may either get some correct characters or garbage between ''. The main point is that the respective output for lines 1 and 2 and for lines 3 and 4 should be *identical* with the exception of the outer single quotes. The function is supposed to escape single quotes and do nothing else with the input (e.g. output "as is"). If the output is only '', then there is a bug. tg3 ethernet card drops connection under heavy load

We have an HP DL360 server with dual on-board Tigon3 ethernet cards. We are using eth0, eth1 is unused at the moment. Sometimes when the network interface is under heavy load, for example moving large file transfers over rsync or NFS, the network interface stops working and we lose all connection to the server. The only solution at this point is to jump on the console and restart the network interface. I have not found anything in the log files to indicate what is causing this. Has anyone else experienced something similar? Or perhaps you know how I could troubleshoot this?

Samba Hosts Allow/Deny

I am running CentOS 5.2 w/ Samba 3.0.28 and have a basic user level setup and am trying to use hosts allow and deny but it does not have an effect? I have specified them in the share level of the config. I have tried: hosts allow = 192.168.0.72/32 hosts deny = 0.0.0.0/0 Also: ; hosts allow = 192.168.0.72/32 hosts deny = 0.0.0.0/0 except 192.168.0.72/32 Still, any hosts can gain access? Squid proxy High Availability

Hi all, I am running squid integrated with squidguard.dansguardian,clamav running on single standalone centos 5 server.Also running webmin for managing squid.This Squid is serving for 4000 clients. Since it is serving more users i don't want to take risk by running single server,if there is any single point of failure will cause all of my users to standstill. So i am planned to go for one more Centos5 server with cluster.Can any one suggest me how to design it either i have to go for common storage for storing all global files or i need to synchronize both the server periodically by running instance on local disk of both the servers. CentOS 5 x86_64 install does not see SATA drives

hi. I am having some problems installing CentOS 5.2 x86_64 onto a Supermicro 6015V-T with Intel 5000V chipset and ESB2 controller using SATA drives. Currently I am running CentOS 4.7 i386 and it sees both drives but when I boot into the CentOS 5 install CD it fails to see the drives. Does anybody have any tips for getting the drives visible? Please Update Extras Repo?!

Is there any reason the "extras" repo hasn't been updated in a while? Modules like kmod-xfs and kmod-drbd/kmod-drbd82 are frequently used and haven't been updated for the latest kernel. Powerdns is two months behind the critical security update to 2.9.21.1. If you're going to provide the extras repo as a default CentOS repository, then it MUST be given the same attention as the "updates" repo. Please update ASAP. Thank you, Kenneth Price

Perl CGI scripts - stripping out unwanted carriage returns etc

I have a number of perl CGI scripts which I wrote some time ago (and which are working successfully on my website). I've set up a local server on which to do some development work on the scripts but I can't get them to work - the error log says: No such file or directory: exec of '/var/www/cgi-bin/script.cgi' failed Premature end of script headers: script.cgi etc By comparing two identical very simple cgi scripts (one works, the other doesn't), I've traced the problem to, apparently, unwanted carriage returns which have somehow got into the perl text files. Is there a quick and easy way (ie piece of software) to strip out these things, or do I have to do it manually? Thanks for any help, Andy

Hi List, We had the following error thrown on console on a PowerEdge server running CentOS 5 (64 bit). Googling around didn't yield any particular insights. The server crashed a few minutes after this message. Running memtester, just to check, didn't find anything; and the box has been running for months before this without issue. I'm wondering if anyone has run across this before, and if so, if it was software (CentOS) or hardware (PowerEdge / PowerVault) related? On: Centos 5.2, with httpd-2.2.3-11.el5_1.centos.3 I tried to bring up a web server using an httpd.con that runs well on: Fedora 8, with httpd-2.2.8-1.fc8 as well as several earlier versions, going back to Fedora 4. On the Centos version, I cannot successfully: run a NameVirtualHost; execute a CGI. I can bring up a simple page if I avoid the above. Suggestions would be much appresiated. Thanks, Mike.

Question about Mirrors

I am trying to set up a local repo for my division. I tried to rsync 5.1 updates off the mirrors and recieved an error of no file or dir. After going to the mirror, I notice that all of the 5.1 filder is empty and there is a readme there that states..... This directory (and version of CentOS) is depreciated. For normal users, you should use /5/ and not /5.1/ in your path. Please see this FAQ concerning the CentOS release scheme: http://www.centos.org/modules/smartfaq/faq.php?faqid=34 If you know what you are doing, and absolutely want to remain at the 5.1 level, go to http://vault.centos.org/ for packages. So I just want to make sure that I'm understanding this correct. I should use the 5.1 original RPMS for my base OS and get my updates for 5.1 from the 5 folder???? Just sounds weird. Being slightly familiar with BSD, I'm trying to get my feet wet with Linux, and was wondering if anyone can suggest a good walkthrough of setting up a CentOS server with Apache, PHP, and MySQL... I realize there are step-by-step guides of the sort "copy-this-line- paste-into-terminal-and-hit-enter", but I'd like to understand what's going on when I issue a single wget command and numerous packages and libraries start downloading.... Specifically: 1. Is there a "right" way to install software on Linux in general, an CentOS in particular? For example, the Package Manager on CentOS 5.2 allows you to install certain software, but often not the latest version. So if I go download MySQL 5.0.67 from the web, how do I install it and make it play nice with the rest of the system? Ditto for PHP 5.2.6. And once installed (either by the Package Manager -- and by the way, why are the apps it lists so out of date?), what's the best way to update PHP and MySQL? Is it simply a matter of downloading the binaries again and overwriting the existing install? On Mac OS X, such downloads come as .pkg files that seem to take care of so many details without requiring a trip to the command line. 2. Where should software, such as PHP, MySQL, Apache2, be installed? / usr/bin ? 3. Is it a bad idea to install some software from the command-line via wget, some software from the graphical Package Manager, and some software from the the web? What I mean is, so far it seems like Linux manages the list of installed packages, and I just wonder if I'm screwing things up this way. Anyway, sorry for the ramble, just looking for some guidance. smartd and 3ware on centos5

Hi, I've CentOS5 box with 3ware RAID controller in it. I can't get the tw_cli command line tool to work, and smartd also barks on me. The tw_cli simply doesn't see the controller, no errors logged anywhere. When starting smartd, it is much more verbose. Oct 9 22:15:15 toporko smartd[29238]: The SMART RETURN STATUS return value (smartmontools -H option/Directive) can not be passed through the 3ware 3w-xxxx driv er. This can be fixed by applying a simple 3w-xxxx driver patch that can be found here: http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/ Alternatively, upgrade your 3w-xx xx driver to version 1.02.00.037 or greater. The configuration file for smartd looks like this: /dev/sda -d 3ware,0 -a -m root -T permissive /dev/sda -d 3ware,1 -a -m root -T permissive I do remember smartd and tw_cli working in the past. However, last time I used them was so long ago that I don't remember if it was before or after upgrade from CentOS4 to CentOS5. Is it possible to get tw_cli and smartd into working condition on CentOS5 box? Thanks, Alex

Minicom capture file

I'm trying to capture text data coming in on serial port to put into a plot on a web page. Running minicom 2.3 on a Fedora 9 box the capture file is updated immediately. Running minicom 2.1, stock on a Centos 5.x box the capture file doesn't update until you exit capture mode. Is there any way to have it update immediately or is there an alternative application to write incoming data to a text file. Likely many ways to accomplish this but my brain is out of ideas today.
