One distro had a "brainflash" a number of years ago - create a list for expert users and one for newbies. It didn't take long for the newbies to realise that there was no one to help and so flooded the "expert list". This put off the "experts". On some mailing lists, long time users are put off by the flood of posts by newbies who don't even conform to the list guidelines. Some pay back by not replying to those in violation without as much as a hint. Would a new list really solve anything or would it close one door and open another? Regards, Vandaman.

OT Mailing List Spam This might be slightly off-topic but as the source of spam is probably a spammer getting emails from this list, I reported him and his service provider should cut off his/her ugly head. I got an email of the classic 419 scam from a "El Amir Assadallah" <rdjir001(a)eircom.net>. This has just come if from the abuse department :- Dear Vandaman, Thank you for your recent email to Technical Support. We have contacted our customer and hope to have this issue resolved within 72 hours. If you receive any further mails of this nature after the 72 hour time period has elapsed, please forward the headers. Kind Regards, eircom net Residential Technical Support. Nightly yum update did an "upgrade"

Hy there, i have a centos (4.?) Box with nightly yum update enabled. Last night, it did an upgrade to 4.7 leading to several problem i.e. not respawning the dhcrelay, which is needed on this box. Can I control the update policy not to upgrade to new releases in the nightly updates? I would like do to nightly updates, but make release upgrades manual (I get a new kernel, so I have to reboot anyway). Is that possible? Help -- LVM snapshot full -- how do I recover?

Hi -- I forgot to remove an LVM snapshot after making a backup. Now neither the snapshot nor the original volume are available. How do I recover and get the original volume back online? Yumex-Error in loading repository data

On a CentOS 4 desktop Yumex gives the error message "Error in loading repository data" but yum works fine from the cli. Could something have been broken in yumex? Putting yumex in debug mode does not give me clues as to the error message. Thanks, Josh

JFS in CentOS

Hello all, I'm relatively new to CentOS, but I've been using linux as my main operating system on both the desktop and server ends for the past 4 years. I currently have a PIII server with two 160GB IDE hard drives in it, in a virtual RAID 1 array. At the time of installation, the only FS choices for the largest partition, 120GB, were ext2 and ext3. I chose ext3, but now am wishing to reformat the partition as JFS to skip long file system check times. I've done Google searches regarding the topic, which lead me to added centos.plus to my repo list, and installed the only kernel I see as being available from CentOSPlus, and yet I still have no JFS modules loaded or anywhere in /lib/modules/. I installed JFSUtils from the CentOSPlus repo, but have no way to use the partition that has been created (by myself, using mkfs.jfs). Short of compiling a kernel with JFS support from the source package provided with CentOS, I don't know what to do. Has anyone else used JFS on CentOS 5.2 successfully? How did you do it? Hi, I am very new to this community. I want to make a custom iso which contains CentOS5.2 & scopserv(asterisk based PBX). Please provide me the proper steps for creating an iso. I have created an iso but during installation, only CentOS5.2 rpms get installed & scopserv rpms doesn't install. Is genhdlist command is required? ssh error in /var/log/secure

Hi - I just bought a xen VPS and am running CentOS 5 on it (updated to 5.2). With all my personal machines sitting at home behind a router with all ports (except for BitTorrent) closed - I had forgotten how frequent brute force ssh attacks are, but within a day, the log was loaded with them. So I did two things - I installed and configured pam_abl and I moved the ssh port to 1294 ( a > 1024 number that means something to me so easy to remember) and then blocked port 22 in iptables. Interestingly - after installing pam_able before I configured and restarted sshd, pam_able was already building a database of hosts - the attacks were that frequent. Nothing after restarting sshd on the new port though, at least so far. Anyway - while the server is working on the new port and I can connect, I noticed this error: Oct 4 09:01:25 li34-4 sshd[2305]: Server listening on :: port 1294. Oct 4 09:01:25 li34-4 sshd[2305]: error: Bind to port 1294 on 0.0.0.0 failed: Address already in use. Is that caused by a mis-configuration on my part? The only change I made to sshd was the Port directive (root login was already disabled in the xen image I started from) It looks like it is listening on the port and then trying to bind to the port a second time. Is that from having two IPs on the same nic (eth0 and eth0:1) ?

Putting CentOS 5.2 kernel on CentOS 4.x

Has anyone tried to install a CentOS 5.x kernel on a CentOS 4.x system? Is this doable? I"m aware of the dependencies but I'm curious if anyone has done this successfully. Basically, we have a few hundred 4.x systems that cannot be upgraded to 5.x, yet, but we do need the kernel update to fix the XFS problem as described here: http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=3125

VNC & GDM & runlevel 3

Has anybody been able to get this to work ? I have been trying multiple options until now but all give me the empty crappy desktop with black cross display... I have tried changing the server_args in the xinetd config, but that makes a connection and exits straigt away... On 1 box it works in runlevel 5, but that is obvious (IMHO)... Install CentOS-5.0 on HP-ComPaq DC7700 Dual Core

I am attempting to install CentOS-5.0 from CD-ROM onto an HPQ- DC7700 Dual Core machine. The standard install seems to halt at, or immediately after, this point in the setup process is displayed on the console: <Enter> {default install option} ... CPU1: Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 CPU 4300 @ 1.8GHz stepping 02 ... ACPI: Assume root bridge [\_sb_.pc10] bus is 0. I would like to get this box running so any help with this is greatly appreciated. The reason for using CentOS-5.0 is because I do not which to wait 30 some odd hours to download new ISO images. The plan is to install from 5.0 and upgrade to 5.2. last point. iSCSI ini and ESX Server

I always used IET on CentOS but I have a quick server to setup to backup some VM's, then migrate to DAS on another server and the easiest way for me will be to accomplish this via iSCSI vmfs stores. I figured I would just use the ini that ships with CentOS but have never used it against ESX, anyone do this and have experiences they care to share? Should it be trivial or are there any non standard configs that need to be used? Thanks! jlc

Services take a long time during initialzation (LDAP-authentication)

Hi! I've got a CentOS4.7-machine as a fileserver. The machine also serves as the LDAP-server against which all regular users are authenticated. The problem I am having is that the machine takes a very long time to boot. Most of the services start up rather quick, but three services take quite a long time (extending the boot time to over half an hour, which is .... long) The three services are (in that order): - NFS statd - LDAP - NFS quota As soon as the LDAP-Service (and sshd) has started I can remotly log into the machine: the rpc.quotad has started but takes no CPU-time (so I guess he must be waiting for something) Some other observations I had: - a restart of LDAP takes several minutes - if the LDAP-service is down a "su ldap" (ldap IS in /etc/passwd) seems to hang. The ldap-service-script does such a su to check the configuration so I guess that is what takes the service so long) Could anyone give me a hint what the problem could be and how to fix it? Is any more information required (don't want to spam you with the nsswitch.conf and the whole pam.d-stuff)? Bernhard

Maltby I have looked everywhere on the drive using programs such as 'find'. I have ran: $ find / -iname "*.jpg" -or "*.JPG" and the missing files are now listed. I know enough to be able to find files. This is whats got me because I've never know an ext3 fs to do this; unless it's a bug with fuse-encfs.

Keeping a complete CentOS mirror

Is there a way I can keep a complete mirror of old/new releases of CentOS 4/5 automagically? In other words I would pull the old files from the vault site when needed, and new files from one of the other mirrors. I've seen/used a few scripts but rsync just stomps the old releases with the latest. The key issue here is having new release detection happen programmatically so I don't need to manage it once it's setup. Before I reinvent the wheel, I just wanted to see if there was a known method of accomplishing this. Q. Why? A. Because I have customers that need access to older OS builds as their products do not move as quickly as CentOS. Thanks in advance. Chris

Flaky graphics - need help nailing down the cause

This morning I noticed that my (new in July) monitor was behaving strangely. At first, it was odd parts of web page graphics that didn't show up unless I scrolled up and down in the window, and then they weren't displayed with any consistency. Then I noticed that the screensaver failed to appear (computer was locked, but graphics never showed on the monitor). I tried running mplayer to play a movie I have on the system, and the window remained black (sound was fine). When I move a window, parts of it (pixels scattered across the window) don't refresh during the move OR even when it is done, unless I run the mouse over them or, in the case of the menu bar, click on one of the options. The nautilus window that sometimes comes up after a reboot was not fully painted with the text parts of the entries below the mouse cursor on the screen until I ran the mouse over them, and then only the ones I "touched" refreshed properly. During the system shutdown and restart, the text is scrambled beyond recognition, although the graphics during the boot, driver init and login screen are fine. Most of the screen after I log in shows up, unless the default terminal and nautilus windows show up, and then they're not all there (as above). DVI-VGA: same problem either way 2.6.18-92.1.10 - 92.1.13: likewise (makes no difference) The video card is an nvidia ge7100gs and I have the beta driver from rpmforge (under dkms). The base system is an ECS nFORCE4M-A with an AMD Athlon 64x2 and 4GB of OCZ main memory. The newest parts are the main memory (upgraded from 2GB about two months ago) and the monitor (new in July). The m/b, COU and graphics card are all about 18 months old. I recently upgraded to the new 92.1.13 kernel. Question: Is this the monitor (most likely), the video card, the OS or the base system, or something else I have not considered? Is there a good video test program I can use to diagnose this properly? I have a two-year replacement warranty on the monitor, so I will use it if I need to, and I think it's still under the manufacturer's warranty anyway. Thanks. mhr

XDMCP - no GDM login, only gray screen with X

I'm having trouble getting the GDM login screen to show up when I connect from a remote host. I'm using Xming on the local Windows machine, but every time I connect to the remote server all I get is a gray window with the X cursor. I have "Enable=true" in the [xdmcp] section of /etc/gdm/custom.conf. IPtables is disabled. I've googled around and read through the xdmcp page on tldp.org but have not come up with anything. Can anyone help with this issue?

Firefox distorted printing

Hi, I am running a fully updated CentOS 4 box. Since the last few rounds of updates - upgrading to the latest Firefox, I find that I can not print Bank statements etc ( .ps files when saved to disk). The Bank's logo and any lines on the form print OK but the actual content is distorted beyond recognition - printing a series of special characters (!"$%&#'(") instead of transaction descriptions or amounts. Has anyone else experienced this or have a suggestion on how to fix the problem. Other preformatted documents like supplier invoices are also not printed as well formatted as before (html documents) but appear all squashed up instead of filling the page vertically. TIA ChrisG

Hi, I'm running a crontjob on CentOS 5.2 server, which then connects to a webpage to run some stuff. It has to run this way, since the webpage is on a Windows server, and the Windows scheduled tasks doesn't work as well. It seems like the cronjob is working fine, except that the email output worries me a bit. This is what I get on email, Your Terminal type is unknown! Does software raid 1 compare checksums or otherwise verify that the same bits are coming from both disks during reads? What I'm interested in, is whether bit errors that were somehow undetected by the hardware would be detected by the raid 1 software. Thanks, Nataraj

setting timezone from kickstart

Hi all, I used to do manual installs so I would set the timezone each time. I have now migrated to kickstart and I wish to use a command line (at boot) parameter to set the needed timezone. I am familiar with timeconfig and that works. I tried timeconfig --help (looking for command line arguments) and there appears to not be a command line way that I see to set the timezone. I have seen mention of changing symbolic links and stuff - but I was hoping for a system command to change the timezone. Like "timeconfig --zone Denver" or "timeconfig --zone Mountain" something like that. Is there something like that or do I have to use the symbolic links? Thanks, Jerry

Trying to use CentOS 5.2 to make a WAN Router

I have a CIDR block of IP addresses that I need to pass through to a WAN. I am trying to have a CentOS 5.2 basic install with 2 NICs be the router/gateway between the WAN and the public IP CIDR block. Has anyone done this? Other than turning on IP forwarding what did you have to do?

scp and key login

It seems the certificate-based login doesn't work on both sides of the remote connection when using scp? Scenario: User on PC A can SSH login to PCs B and C with his certificate, no password prompt. When User on PC A runs a scp operation from B to C he's asked for the password on C. Does the scp actually open a connection from B to C (User doesn't have a certificate on B)? This would explain the problem. I hoped to avoid such a problem by scping from a third machine that normally has certificate-based access to all machines. Hi Dears, I am having trouble mounting a partition with UFS file system (FreeBSD), I am trying to build with the following commands: mount-r-t-o ufs ufstype = ufs2 / dev/hdb1 / part mount-r-t-o ufs ufstype = 44bsd / dev/hdb1 / part But appears the following error message: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on / dev/hdb1, missing codepage or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg anybody have any idea? Okay, Yahoo is bumming me. Only system my mail is having an issue with. All mail is accepted, but junked. I can only think it is the DKIM/Domain keys. It is apparent that the dkim-milter is not part of the centos 5.x distro nor is it part of the mirrors, as far as I can tell. So...have any of you done it with your servers for sendmail? There are some sites that claim to have rpms and I have downloaded the tar from sendmail. But I would rather hear from anyone who has an opinion before I go with one or the other. I do not trust any rpms except for their mirrors, so not sure if I want to do that. But maybe it is fine. Open to suggestions, ideas for what works for you and yahoo. Hello everyone, While I know this isn't Centos related, you guys seems to be on top of your game around here. Sorry for the off-topic. I'm looking for a tool to monitor my servers and send either an email or page or both when something breaks. I would like it to monitor all sorts of services on the servers with one small detail, I'd like it to be able to confiugre so if the DBA need something monitor that is hosted on a shared system that they can only change what they are responsible for and not something else that is being monitored on that system. My solution is to send my printouts to a different printer where they print perfectly! I've got an old HP Laserjet 4 at my desk, and that browser on that OS prints mostly junk characters on that printer. There's also a HP 4250 outside my door, and that browser/OS combination prints fine on that printer. << There seems to be a known issue with Firefox 3 on all platforms, when printing to Postscript printers. I started a thread about it on the Mozilla support forums, did some experimenting, thought I'd fixed it, found I hadn't and in fact, have never resolved it. Things you might try: * Turning off "Allow pages to choose their own fonts" * Changing the default character encoding from "Western (ISO-8859-1)" to something else (and possibly back again) * Disabling the use of the printer's fonts in your driver It's been a show-stopper for me, and I'm thinking about going back to FF2. Configure an ATI Radeon X1200 card?

Hi, I want to configure X on a NEC PC with an ATI graphic card. Usually, I do that by hand, e. g.: # init 3 # X -configure --> first draft # mv xorg.conf.new /etc/X11 Then I edit this with Vi, step by step. Usually, this works, but not for ATI cards. Here, the first draft only gives me a "vesa" driver... though xorg-x11-drv-ati is installed. But then, when I replace Driver "vesa" by: Driver "ati" I get a "No screens found" error. Until now, I've successfully configured dozens of different video cards, mostly Intel and NVidia (old and new), and also a few ATI cards (with the opensource driver). But this is the first ATI card that gives me trouble. Any suggestions? Niki
