grub permission denied

I have one server that I can not edit the /etc/grub/grub.conf file. I get permission denied as root. I can change other files just not grub.conf. after unmounting /dev/hda from /boot and mounting under /g for a test the same things occurs. Even in single mode I can not modify / delete / move the file. When umounted I did a fsck on it and all is fine. also can not edit menu.lst which links to grub.conf. what am I missing? Thanks -Jay

CentOS 4 & autofs 4.1.3

For those of you using CentOS 4, is anyone having trouble with autofs 4.1.3? I'm seeing (with 60second unmount timeout) what appears to be an apparent race condition where a script touches an automount directory at about (the same second according to logs) the same time the unmount is triggered, and the script then gets a read error. Sure, increasing the unmount timeout will reduce the occurrence rate, but if this really is a race, then it won't eliminate it. In looking at the CHANGELOG between autofs 4.1.3 and 5.0.1rc2, there have been tons of changes including some references to timing issues. However nothing is jumping out, and there are many changes. Is it conventional wisdom that the 4.1.3 autofs has 'issues' and folks routinely move up to autofs 5 on CentOS 4.x? Thanks, -John

I have a server with dual nic's running centos 5.2 1 nic connects to the cable modem, which has 15m d and 2m up, but speed tests barely come back at 5mb down including road runner's internal speed test. I hook up my laptop to the same modem, same port, using the same cable and I get 17mb down. I have ruled out iptables, nics (because same result on both nics), cables, cable modem(with a brighthouse rep) any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

NFS exporting a GFS mount point

Hello, I have a storage offering some 11 TB of space. I'd happily use ext3 and NFS export to 4 client machines, but 8 TB seems to be the tested maximum. I'd really like one mount point for the whole 11 TB. Since GFS offers lock_nolock option for local mounting, I'm assuming it's not so out of line to NFS export this GFS mount point. Thoughts and inputs appreciated. --Koji

Gnome Desktop Questions?

I have a couple of oddities that I hope someone here can clarify for me. OS = CentOS-5.2 all updates applied to date. 1. On the gnome desktop in the top panel (or menu bar) I have an icon for "System Monitor" which runs the application "gnome-system-monitor". On my other desktop CentOS-5.2 system I have the same thing. However, one one system the icon gives me a real time (ok 5 sec intervals) display of cpu load as cyan and white bar graphs . On the other system the same application gives me a static, sickly green and yellow, display of an oscilloscope. How do I get the dynamic version of the icon? I have checked and both systems are running the same version of the applicvation from the same location. /usr/bin/gnome-system-monitor --version = 2.16.0 2. On the same two systems, the first (the one with the dynamic display) has entries on the system dropdown menufor locking the display, logging out and shutting down. On the second all I have is logout and suspend. Going to the Gnome Menu manager does not give me any option to add the missing items. Can somebody tell me how to get these minor, but for me very desirable, changes made to the second system? The only difference between the two systems that I can recall is that one (the first) was upgraded from 4.6 while the second (the more limited unit) was a clean install. LCD blanks out overnight

I inherited an ancient Dell Latitude C840 and recently installed CentOS 5.2 on it. It worked fine for the most part, but when I left it overnight and came back the next morning, the screen blacked out and wouldn't come back unless I did a hard reset. Even though I turned off all the power management settings and left it set like a desktop, the next morning after that it still blacked out. I thought maybe it'd come back if I switched from X to a virtual text console, but that didn't do the trick. Problem of "sort" utf8 file.

Hi all, I have 2 linux distro —— ubuntu and centos. My problem is that the sort command has different behavior when sorting Chinese string encoded in utf8 file. On Ubuntu, it is OK. But on CentOS, it WRONG. I google this problem and it seems that's because of LC_COLLATE. I'm backing up to a NTFS partition on an external USB drive with dump. I'm seeing failures in /var/log/messages reading sector 0xFFFFFFF that cause the verify pass to fail. Anytime I see an error where the number is binary all ones I suspect a magic number... and worry. How was the disk partitioned? How was this partition formatted? OT: Migration from Evolution to Thunderbird (Thunderbird mbox files)

Background is that I have been using Evolution for my MUA for a number of years. Migrated to Evolution from Mozilla Mail. I only use Evolution for email and contacts. Getting bored with the issues (frequently not being able to exit and needing to kill it; Bug Buddy popping up in GNOME, etc) that Mark (MHR) and I and I'm sure others have experienced. About 24 hours ago, I installed Thunderbird (on CentOS 5.2 32 bit) and am testing it with this mailing list. So far, Thunderbird doesn't seem to have any issues, based on this very quick trial. The Thunderbird documentation says that it uses mbox files, but if so, where_are_they? Weird TCP problem

Last week, I started seeing very strange behavior in one of the networks that I manage. The office LAN uses a Linux firewall which masquerades their workstations over their DSL connection. There are probably ~75 workstations in the office LAN. Their mail server is in a collocated facility nearby. That server has an RFC1918 address; its router does SNAT to forward packets to the system. Both the office firewall and the mail server are currently running fully patched CentOS 5.2. Here's the weird part: If a machine running Linux in the office lan attempts to connect to the mail server on any TCP port, there's a small chance that the server will simply ignore the SYN packets. It doesn't log any errors. If I'm running tcpdump, I see the incoming SYN packets, but no reply. If I use iptables to log the packets, information about the packet is saved in the messages file. If I capture the packets and use wireshark to analyze them, I don't see anything odd: the checksums are good and I can't see any difference between a SYN packet that gets a SYN+ACK and one that's ignored (beyond the obvious: different timestamps and checksums). The problem doesn't seem to affect Windows workstations in the office LAN. As far as I can tell, only SYN packets are dropped. I don't see delays in established connections. I've attached a file that contains, first, the output of tcpdump which shows packets to or from the office's firewall address, as recorded by the destination server. The first four SYN packets are ignored, but the kernel proceeds with the TCP handshake after the fifth SYN packet. Second, the file contains the log messages which are recorded as a result of these iptables rules: iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -s officefw --dport 22 -j LOG iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -s officefw --dport 22 -j ACCEPT Those are the only iptables rules present on the server accepting the connections. Both of those appear to indicate that the server in the colo facility is receiving the SYN packets. Problem with running Centos 5.2 on Dell Optiplex 330

Hi, I am havind deep trouble with a bunch of our newly arrived Optiplex 330 as it can't run Centos 5.2 property. The installation works fine, but when it boots up, it can't be connected to the network. I am getting error saying " link is not ready" when doing system-config-network. I check lspci and it can detect the network controller no problem. The light next to the cable is also on as well. Does anyone know how I can fix this problem? We should have bought just one and see if it works before buying more, and now we are stuck. Could someone please kindly give any suggestion? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Best Regards, Pete

I'm backing up to a NTFS partition on an external USB drive with dump. I'm seeing failures in /var/log/messages reading sector 0xFFFFFFF that cause the verify pass to fail. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can answer your question about the USB driver. Do you have any Diagnostics for that USB drive that you can run on it? If not, see if you can download diagnostics from the web site of the manufacturer. Maybe a problem at 33554424 also?

Hello everyone, I have problem with time delaying on my CentOS powered server. I have tried to set time in BIOS and in OS (with saving time to BIOS), but time still delaying, so after month is about five minutes delayed. In past I was using this box with Windows and there wasn´t this time problem, but I cant warrant, that there are no hardware issues. So I was decided, that easiest way to fix this problem will be setting up the NTP. I have found many howtos, but I don´t believe them. So my question is: How to clearly set NTP in CentOS 5? Troubles with NetworkManager

NetworkManager used to work fine for me but during the last few installations its a big hurdle in the wireless connectivity. I'm using Madwifi and its interface is correctly listed and working but I cannot connect to any wifi AP without NetworkManager. I've two interfaces: eth0 and wifi0. Starting NetworkManager doesn't show any notification icon in the top right in gnome and I believe its only activating the ath0 instead of wireless interface wifi0 but still I am unable to see any of the notification icon in the gnome as I was used to in past for any of the NICs. The error which I recieve upon logging into the gnome is: "The NetworkManager applet could not find some required resources. It cannot conitnue". xulrunner-devel package missing many header files

Hi, I've just installed xulrunner-devel from yum, but there are following header files cannot be found in xulrunner-sdk-1.9/sdk/include: mozilla-config.h mozilla-config32.h prtypes.h The include/xulrunner-sdk-1.9 constains those above header files, I did link to them, but xulrunner-sdk-1.9/system_wrappers/prtypes.h has a problem as well: #pragma GCC system_header #pragma GCC visibility push(default) #include_next <prtypes.h> #pragma GCC visibility pop At final, I could not compile VLC plugin with the xulrunner-sdk-1.9/sdk. Kernel panic installing CentOS 5.2 in Parallels on iMac

I'm unable to get much past the "boot:" prompt in the installer. The panic appears to be in powernowk8_init which according to http://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2008-0612.html has a recently-fixed null-pointer dereference. That errata is from August 4; the latest CentOS install ISOs are from June. I tried the agp=off suggestion from e.g. http://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=13512 with no success. Is there a good way to proceed here? Will there be new install media with the more recent kernel?

OT: Home NAS device

I am looking for something that I can hack away like a NSLU2 but that thing only has one disc and worst of all its 100m interface. Anyone know of a device you can load Linux on that has maybe 2 discs like a NAS200 with a gig nic? I need a quiet device to act as a tftp-dhcp/web/dns system. I thought of just building one from a new Soekris board, or even a mini itx but hope there was something simpler/cheaper. Thanks for any reco's! jlc

I am trying to do some new things with kickstart. I get a message that pops up "Could not allocate requested partitions" press OK to reboot. How do you go about debugging the kickstart file? How can I pop up information (in text mode) on the screen??? so I can see my values for my partitions. THanks, Jerry

Virtual email with Postfix, MySQL and Dovecot problem

Hello all, Anyone of you success to install virtual email with Postfix, MySQL and Dovecot on CentOS 5.2 ? I am running: mysql-server-5.0.45-7.el5, postfix-2.3.3-2.el5.centos.mysql_pgsql and dovecot-1.0.7-2.el5 on CentOS 5.2 box and can not make it work. All deamons (mysqld, postfix master, dovecot) are running but I can not make it deliver email to virtual user via Dovecot. The log file show that postfix is not deliver email to virtual user but it deliver to all virtual aliased address. The configuration file is working with my test on laptop that running Fedora 9 with mysql-server-5.0.51a-1.fc9.i386, postfix-2.5.1-2.fc9.i386 and dovecot-1.0.15-10.fc9.i386 The version number is not too much different so I think it is not a problem. Attached are config files that working on fedora 9 and I using it on CentOS but not work This configuration I followed the guide at http://workaround.org/articles/ispmail-etch/ I am not native English speaker so my explanation above may not clearly enough, pls raise question for me if you need further information Your advices are highly appreciates! Centos 5 card reader automount

To this point, whenever I've plugged a storage device (flash drive, mp3 player) into a USB plug, it's magically mounted and I get an icon on my desktop. I've just got a card reader and it doesn't automount. I can mount it manually with "mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/temp" and that works fine. I would prefer to have it automount and give me the desktop icon. Unfortunately, I don't yet know enough about the automounting mechanism to know what I need to change to make this happen. Configuring an Intel 3945 wireless card: partial success

Hi, My wife has a new ASUS laptop with an Intel 3945 wireless card. I'm running CentOS 5 on all our desktops here (at work and at home), and I'm quite happy with it. I had a partial success in configuring the wireless card. Basically I'm using [base], [updates], [extra] and [rpmforge] repos, configured with the yum-priorities plugin. Priority 10 for RPMForge, 1 for the others. From RPMForge, I installed dkms-ipw3945, the driver for my wireless card. I gave it a first go with the most basic setup, that is: static IP, no encryption. After installing the driver, the card shows up as eth1. I removed /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and edited a minimalistic ifcfg-eth1. After a restart, the interface comes up OK, and I can connect to my access point as well as ping machines on the internet. But now I'd like to install and use NetworkManager. I've read the according Wiki entry on the CentOS site. Here's what I did: 1) Added the 'NetworkManager' and 'NetworkManagerDispatcher' services (using chkconfig) 2) Removed the 'network' service (also using chkconfig) 3) Rebooted to be sure Result: 1) The NetworkManager icon shows up OK on the upper right side of my GNOME desktop. 2) When an Ethernet cable is connected to the machine, NetworkManager configures a connection OK (cable connected to router). 3) The wireless ESSID of my access point shows up OK in NetworkManager. Ethernet cables get some sort of priority in NetworkManager, so I unplugged the cable and clicked on the wireless connection. NetworkManager tries to establish a connection for about 30 seconds, but fails. ... which leaves me clueless. Any suggestions? Last detail: for the moment at least, I'm using no encryption at all on the access point. We live in a very remote place in the south French countryside, there's only hunters and wild boars around, so it's not a very friendly place for wlan-hackers :o) Niki Kovacs

W2K gives me a control to unmount the thumb drive in the system tray which makes the drive "disappear" from W2K. Unfortunately, attaching a new drive or just reattaching the old drive isn't recognized by W2K. qemu monitor tells me it unable to add the new device or delete the old device. If hot swapping a USB drive can be made to work with qemu, swapping a USB drive will still be ugly. The USB device number assigned by the kernel changes each time I swap thumb drives. This isn't too bad but access to /proc/bus/usb/<usb_bus_number>/<usb_dev_number> is root:root with permissions rw-r--r--. This means that each time I swap the drive I have to chmod the "new" USB device entry. I don't see this changing even if I can get qemu to let me add the new device. I'll have to try using qemu monitor to swap a CD-ROM at some point in the future. I found the following bug report that matches what I am seeing with the gFTP we have in Centos: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=350813 This is an old bug that they claim has been fixed in CVS. Has that been applied to what we are running? Becuase gFTP crashes for me on IPv6 using FTP.

Compiling v6tun from KAME

I need vtun working over IPv6. The version from rpmforge does not seem to support IPv6 (binds to 0.0.0.0:5000 if I specify binding to the interface, and won't let me put in an IPv6 address for address binding). So I was pointed to the KAME (which does not provide any FC/RHEL support. First, congratulations on the fabulous CentOS Wiki. About the only information that I haven't found on it is how to create a custome install DVD with added kernel modules -- e.g. when the standard install DVD does not support the motherboard chipset (SATA drives & network cards not recognized, for example) and network card. I have an AMD ATI motherboard with SB600 chipset. When I tried to install the RH5.2 trial, I could not get Internet connectivity either with the onboard network chip (the network chip was recognized, but not the SB600 chipset interface) or with an Intel server net- work card (seems that the Intel driver in 5.2 does not support that network card's chip). Maybe I had to set IDE emulation for the SATA drives in the BIOS as well, I don't remember. Both the AMD ATI SB600 chipset and the Intel server card worked without problems on Fedora 9, so I'd like to try to compile the Fedora 9 modules on CentOS 5.2 then create an updated DVD ISO that is installable and has network connectivity on my hardware.

Thinkmate is opteron, and the Dell, xeon -- which some would say is a factor in Dell's favor; Dell includes a RH subscription whether you want it or not; Dell has three hard drives (the max), Thinkmate four. With the Dell, the memory comes from Crucial, which means there's a waste of two small modules; Thinkmate sells memory at a reasonable price (I'm figuring 32 gigs). The HP xw9400 is closer to the Thinkmate, but an extra $200 to $300, with memory from Crucial. I'm just leery of a maker that I don't know; I searched for reviews and comments, but found almost nothing. Maybe that's telling me something. Barry

Problems making custom isolinux.cfg

I have added a few custom RPM's to my CentOS 5.2 CD, dropped a kickstart.cfg file in the root of the CD, and now want to change the isolinux.cfg in the boot.iso so that it will automatically do a kickstart install when the CD boots up. I am using buildinstall to make the ISO. I edited the isolinux.cfg in /isolinux in my CentOS 5.2 distribution tree off of which I am building my ISO. But after buildinstall runs the isolinux.cfg is changed back! Where is it getting the original from? Where should I be changing it to get my modified isolinux.cfg into my cd? Just to get around the isolinux.cfg issue manually I tried booting and at the prompt I say: linux ks=cdrom:/kickstart.cfg But it says that it cannot find the kickstart.cfg file. Is it expecting it in the root of the boot.iso or of the CD? I put it in the root of the CD. I can mount the CD and see that it is there. I can't figure out how to put it in the root of the boot.iso (if it even needs to go there) because apparently that is getting remade by the buildinstall also and I'm not sure where it is getting the contents from. I'm looking to buy a new workstation, and it looks like Thinkmate makes what I need -- their vsx "virtually silent" variety. I hestitate because I wasn't happy with a laptop I bought a few years ago from a small outfit that sold Linux boxes exclusively. Does anyone have experience with Thinkmate, and in particular, the VSX line? If the later, is it really quiet. I run Centos on four machines now, three of which are Dells, and I'm hoping to do better. The Dell T5400 is close to what I want, but I get more for less from Thinkpad -- at least on paper. thx, Barry

kickstart problems

Hi I'm having a problem with setting up a kickstart environment based on CentOS 5.2 x86_64, on a Sun X2200 M2 server (both the server and the client in the kickstart environment are Sun X2200 M2 systems): the first attempt to load stage2.img fails with the error screen: "unable to retrieve http://192.168.11.10/source/images/stage2.img". Pressing the "OK" button brings up the "HTTP Setup" screen with "Website name: 192.168.11.10" and "CentOS directory: /source" if I press OK it successfully loads stage2.img file and continues with the kickstart installation to a successful completion. I checked the apache logs on 192.168.11.10 and there is no attempt by the client to even load stage2.img before it prompts for the error. Has anyone encounter this problem and has a solution for it? -- ttyl Paolo
