VMWare Server doesn't like new CentOS installation?

I just got a nice, shiny new machine at work, a Core 2 Duo, on which I just finished installing CentOS 5.2 with a fair number of packages, SeaMonkey 1.1.10, Adobe Reader 8.0, Adobe Flash 9.0, mplayer, mplayerplug-in (both from rpmforge), and I think that was it. Then I went and got the latest VMWare Server, 1.0.7, from VMWare, pulled down their rpm, installed it, and ran vmware-config.pl, which is what I have to do (at home) after every new kernel install, too. My new h/w: Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66GHz, 2GB 667MHz DDR2 RAM, 160GB hard drive, nvidia ge7300fs video card, not sure what mobo, but I can't help but wonder if that has anything to do with it (does it???). Running CentOS 5.2 32-bit with all the latest updates. Anyone know anything about this? I asked in the VMWare forums, but haven't got an answer yet (in fact, I rarely get answers there...). upstream ipa on centos inside openvz container

Hi, I'm trying to install rh ipa server on centos 5.2. i downloaded the srpms and built them on centos 5.2. they installed perfectly (via yum localinstall to handle the dependencies). While going through the ipa-server-install script, while starting, ns-slapd seg faults. i did some digging and when i turned on debugging for ns-slapd, here is what i found out: [04/Sep/2008:09:32:16 -0700] - dse_read_one_file processing entry "cn=config" in file /etc/dirsrv/slapd-MYDOMAIN-COM/dse.ldif (primary file) Segmentation fault This is all going on inside a centos host node running openvz and a centos 5.2 container. Does anybody have some exp. with ipa? i'm a bit lost here. I'm installing it in the first place to have a unified directory for the users/emails/permissions. pxe menu help

I am trying to setup a series of vmware esx 3i systems to be provisioned by pxe. Since you can pass the extracted config to the hypervisor in the pxe append line as a file on the tftp server, I presume I can use my CentOS DHCP/PXE server to hand out assigned ip's to specific hosts. Thus, I need a way to force each host to load a specific menu choice (with its own config) when starting. So instead of leaving it to default routines which can change or may be unpredictable, how does one force the mappings of menu assignments when clients connect or at least set it in a reliable manner I can document? CentOS 5 uses the net-snmp package. I am used to the similar but different snmpd package. They appear to have different conventions about what can be used as a "community string". And when net-snmp sees a community string it doesn't like, it just fails silently without giving an error message. I have not been able to find what net-snmp considers a valid community string. -- Drew Einhorn

Changing swap resume signature location

At boot time, the system is looking for a resume signature on the default SWAP partition that was defined during the OS installation. On several systems, I changed the location of the SWAP partition. rsync problem

Hi everybody, after upgrading a few CentOS machines from 5.0 to 5.2, and during that upgrading rsync from 3.0.0-1.el5.rf to 3.0.3-1.el5.rf (both from rpmforge) rsync stopped working and bails out with a segfault after some undeterministic time (zero to a few seconds) during a sync. Manually going back to 3.0.2-1.el5.rf seems to work. Has anybody experienced similar problems? I'm not sure if I should go the the rpmforge or to the rsync mailing lists with this problem, so I thought I'd ask here if anybody run into similar problems. best regards, __ /homas

GIMP 2.4 on CentOS 5?

Hi, I'm using CentOS 5 on all our desktops here (work & home), and I'm quite happy with it. There's one detail I'd like to change. GIMP comes in version 2.2. There have been some changes in version 2.4, and it's also been around for quite some time. There are quite some functions in 2.4 that I'd like to use. As far as I understand, building GIMP 2.4 would involve some changes to [base] packages, like upgrading GTK. Anyone built GIMP 2.4 successfully without wrecking the system? I guess I'd take an SRPM from FC8 from rpm.pbone.net, and then start from here. Only I prefer to ask first. Cheers from the cloudy South of France, Niki

Backup and reinstall a CentOS server

I've got a CentOS server that crashes due to a bad hard disk. I have got a spare disk and need to format and reinstall CentOS from the SERVER CD. Backup and reinstall is a major PITA because of some of the customisations that I've done e.g. the DNS Server is set to log queries (the default does not do this). Any tips on :- - backing up and reinstalling (is a script available)? - is the SERVER CD still 4.4? - Any suggestions on BIND to log queries without SELINUX throwing a fuss? Thanks for any help! I need help with GRUB

Hello, I need help with grub. I've a PC that I've assembled by my self and the configuration is listed below. AMD Athlon 3600+ 1GB Kingstone RAM 80GB SATA & 40 GB PATA MSI Motherboard And the problem that I'm having is with my two Linux distros. Ive installed CentOS & Windows in my SATA HDD and I've used my complete 40GB PATA HDD for Ubuntu. Well all OS's work fine with out any problems but when I want to boot into CentOS I've to select the SATA as my booting HDD from the BIOS if I want to go to Ubuntu the I've to select my PATA as the default HDD from the menu. So what I want to do is I need to add Both distros in to one GRUB boot loader and the other thing is that both grubs that I've on both HDD s only detects the windows Partition not the Linux partion. So I need to to know how to add bothe Linux versions I've into one GRUB. I want to use the SATA HDD as my default HDD. Regards, Sadaruwan Samaraweera

SAS/SATA DAS

I need to replace a slow HP MSA20 that's a bottleneck right now (We are an HP shop). HP's only option with 3.5" SATA drives is stuck at SATA I behind a SAS controller. Dell makes an MD1000 that claims SATA II speeds behind a SAS Perc 5/E (Don't know anything about dell). Anyone got any real world info they can share? I need 3.5" SATA II at least 12 drives behind SAS, I am not concerned about space and could use multiple 1u chassis if I had to. Thanks! jlc

vtun -- no IPv6 support?

Reading many comments about vtun available through google searchs seems to imply it supports IPv6. When I install it (v 3.0.2-1) and bind it to an interface that does NOT have IPv4 defined (only v6), start the service, and do a 'netstat -nat|grep 5000', I see it bound to 0.0.0.0:5000, not to the IPv6 0::/128 equiv address. What gives? IPv6 support or not? Meanwhile I found the kame vtun: http://orange.kame.net/dev/cvsweb.cgi/v6tun/?cvsroot=apps And was given the following 'changes' to compile it on linux. NFS static ports configuration

A couple of RHEL5 books I'm reading at the moment suggest port numbers above 1024 for statd, lockd, mountd and rquotad (eg 38001-38006 or 32764-32767) when configuring NFS to work with a firewall. The default /etc/sysconfig/nfs on CentOS5 however has defaults under 1024, such as mountd 892 statd 662 rquotad 875 Is there something security-related going on here that I'm not aware of, or some other explanation? Neither text mentions the use of ports under 1024 at all. Thanks Mick

Hi Perhaps omeone might answer this tricky problem. I can do this other ways, but i really want to understand how to solve it using ed. I have one solution using g/re/s/re//txt/ , but I want to understand how or if i can solve it using the ed (.)a command. A script i have parse several files and append text after a specific text is matched. If one file do not have this text, i get a no match and the script terminates. How can I avoid this behavior keeping the original coding style for ed and append text. I have tried tried but still cannot get it correct using (.)a. Is it even possible to do it that way using the (.)a command? Thanks in advance Thomas code example that give a "no match". At my physics lab we have 30 servers with 1TB disk packs. I am in need of monitoring for disk failures. I have been reading about SMART and it seems it can help. However, I am not sure what to look for if a drive is about to fail. Any thoughts about this? Is anyone using this method to predetermine disk failures? TIA

Iptables masq traffic limiting

Where is the correct place to control what traffic is masq'ed out? This is what I have, but I was told the Forward chain isn't the right place to do this? iptables -A POSTROUTING -t nat -o $WAN -j MASQUERADE iptables -A FORWARD -i $WAN -o $LAN -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -i $LAN -o $WAN -m state --state NEW,ESTABLISHED,RELATED -p tcp -m multiport --dports 80,443 -j ACCEPT So which table is the theoretically correct place to add all the ports/services I would want masq'ed out for internal clients? I get this error page re-direct while opening a local webpage on my server, which carries me to yahoo for the error page filled with adverts. Hi list, I'm having one of those 'I'm stupid' -problems with LVM on CentOS 5.2. I've been working with traditional partitions until now, but I've finally been sold on the theoretical benefits of using LVM, but for now I only have a huge pile of broken filesystems to show for my efforts. My scenario; I attach a disk, either over USB or iSCSI. I create a PV on this device, create a VG using the device, and slice off a tiny LV for tests. Or is this some of the magical stuff that sometimes doesn’t happen for whatever reason? 8-) /etc/sysconfig/hwconf is the file kudzu creates when of all detected hardware at startup and it related this hardware with drivers in the kernel but certain drivers are modules in the kernel, wich need to be loaded manually or later when the system is already running this can be done by method 1 explained here above or adding them in /etc/modprobe.conf which makes it load the modules at startup you will need to add the line (if it is not yet there) : alias wlan0 prism54 you can check whether the module is loaded with : /sbin/lsmod | grep prism54 This is how far I got with the above hints. For some reason I don’t have a wlan0, but instead a eth0. I did create an alias in Network Manager for eth0 > wlan0. What’s more, I went to the prism54.org site and found a firmware, downloaded it and as per instructed on the site, renamed the .arm-file to isl3890 and put it in /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware. Upon restarting and activating wlan0 I still get the above SIOC-error. I have a hunch this might actually work if I put the isl3890-file in the correct place. Not sure /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware *is* actually right, as I had to create the hotplugs and firmware-folders. Any hints on this guys? detecting boot order

Given that I have a machine with possibly multiple disks, each of which is bootable(has an MBR).... Is there a command that will query the BIOS and tell me which disk is the default boot disk. Webalizer displays wrong year

I just run webalizer manually on an Apache log, like I have done many times before. Some new statistics were created, but for "August 2006" instead of "August 2008". I cannot figure why! Because of my mistake, the webalizer statistics for this site have not been updated since February. Now I tried to update them for the first time - with the results I described above. The system clock is in correct time (2008). The dates printed in Apache logs are correct (2008). Hello, I know centos does not use syslog-ng, but I have installed it at my university. My intention is if a particular string appears in my /var/log/messages I would like to get an email alert. For example, if i see a message "foo" in /var/log/kern I would like to email myself. Any idea how to do this? Has anyone done this before? TIA

relocation, migration

Hi, I am running a cluster having 2 nodes using red hat cluster suite. node 1 has a para virtualized guest(centOS) running under Xen. My question is when node1 is rebooted, guest is automatically relocated to node 2 . Instead of relocation, is migration possible in this case which can result in Zero down time? Thanks in adv Paras.

C 5.2 and VMWAre error

A colleague has a newly built 64-bit CentOS 5.0 system that, through yum updates, has become CentOS 5.2. VMWare Workstation and Player work fine for my account on it. But a recent configuration of something under their account has produced: vmplayer GTK Accessibility Module initialized /usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmplayer: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib64/libspi.so.0: undefined symbol: atk_hyperlink_impl_get_type The same error (I think) comes up if I try to invoke vmware (Workstation). As a reminder, if I su - <my account> and run vmplayer, it works. I typed env > env.txt for both accounts, diff'd them, and didn't see anything obvious to my eyes. I did the same for set > set.txt. Again, nothing obvious. I rebooted the system. Same problem. What is the most likely cause under their account if, on the same system, it works fine for me? Google searching didn't help much, either. A few posts about the same problem, but no responses. Thanks for any insights. Scott

Slow perl on CentOS - ActivePerl as a solution

Hi all, I found out that one of my perl scripts is heavily affected by the current bug. I was lazy to compile anything and I didn't want to mess up my system doing some experiments, so I tried to install ActivePerl as a temporary solution instead (RPMs are available). ActivePerl 5.8 is approximately 73x faster that CentOS version and ActivePerl 5.10 even slightly faster. Both versions and all installed packages (GUI ppm) work flawlessly and at least for me it is the way how to survive until CentOS 5.3 will be released. HIP rpms for Centos 5.2

For anyone that is interested in looking at HIP, I have posted the latest HIP build on my server: http://htt-consult.com/~rgm/hip/ You don't need the src rpm, the others will do. Since we do not have the IPsec ESP BEET mode patch (http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-nikander-esp-beet-mode-09.txt) for the 2.6.18 kernel (it is in the 2.6.27 kernel), we have to run HIP in userspace. For this you have to run hipfw with at least -i to get the userspace mode working. You should also include -A if you want to accept any HIP traffic. Well read the hipfw docs. If anyone does try it, let me know.

I have log files will mail from LINUX to my PC (MS exchange and outlook). When I look the E-MAIL, the log file line is unwrap.
