Getting IP in installer

How does one acquire an IP when in the ctr-alt-F2 console of the installer just as it begins? I must be doing something wrong, but I need to acquire one from the server before I start the installation. Thanks, jlc

Growing RAID5 on CentOS 4.6

I have 4 disks in a RAID5 array. I want to add a 5th. So I did mdadm --add /dev/md3 /dev/sde1 This worked but, as expected, the disk isn't being used in the raid5 array. md3 : active raid5 sde1[4] sdd4[3] sdc3[2] sdb2[1] sda1[0] 2930279808 blocks level 5, 64k chunk, algorithm 2 [4/4] [UUUU] So then I tried the next step: mdadm --grow --raid-devices=5 /dev/md3 But now I have problems... mdadm: Cannot set device size/shape for /dev/md3: Invalid argument Can CentOS 4.6 grow md5 arrays? Or is the kernel and mdadm version too old? ( http://www.economysizegeek.com/2006/07/15/migrate-raid1-to-raid5-and-grow/ hints that I need 2.6.17 and mdadm 2.5.2, but it's hard to know what the RHEL/CentOS kernel has in it 'cos version numbers no longer match) I wonder if I could boot off a Ubuntu CD or something and grow the array that way. USB drive detected, but nothing gets mounted.

I have a brand new, unaltered (as yet) 4Gb USB flash drive from Micro Center that does not get automounted when I plug it into my 5.2 desktop (home or work). It shows up in lsusb, and I can mount it manually, so why would it not mount automatically? Note that when I plug in other flash drives on the same machine before and after, they all get automounted as usual. Curious.... mhr

Crash recovery

While playing with the graphic card drivers, I broke up the system and now I've a kernel panic with not syncing error. I did backup the system with mondorescue but I forgot to write the iso image files to the DVD rom. Can I burn the ISO file in rescue mode or in CentOS livecd environment? Already tried in the LiveCD env, but, as soon as I eject the live CD to put a blank DVD, the system halts ! Are there any other options available? Please advise.

CentOS 5.2 + SELinux + Apache/PHP + Postfix

Hi All, I'm running CentOS 5.2 with SELinux in enforcing mode (default targeted policy). The server hosts a PHP web app that sends mail. I'm getting the following errors (see end of message) in my selinux audit.log file every time the app sends an email. The email always seems to get sent successfully, despite the log messages. However, they do concern me and I would like to understand what they mean and why they occur. The first set of messages seems to relate to postfix being denied attempts to create/read/write a temporary file in Apache's context. In the second set, it seems to postdrop is attempting to do something with apache's error log file. Can anyone help make sense of this? I know I can create policy rules to allow these actions. But I don't want to do that without understanding the implications. For reference, audit2allow suggests the following policy additions: #============= postfix_postdrop_t ============== allow postfix_postdrop_t httpd_log_t:file getattr; #============= system_mail_t ============== allow system_mail_t httpd_t:file read; allow system_mail_t httpd_tmp_t:file { read write }; Any help greatly appreciated. Also included in this audit were all entry points to the build services, signing machines, primary release machines and connectivity between all these hosts. Since OpenSSH is a critical component of any Linux machine, we considered it essential to audit the last two released package sets ( openssh-4.3p2-26.el5.src.rpm, openssh-4.3p2-26.el5_2.1.src.rpm ). Adding new Hard disk to server with RAID-5

Hi all, I have Dell 2950 III with RAID-5 installed and managed by hardware Raid controller, I also use LVM when install CentOS. Now I get more 03 Hard disk and I would like to add it in to the running system. My question is: 1) if new hard disks add in to the machine, I have to rebuild the RAID volume with RAID management (raid controller) and the volume will be expanded, but is that make any problem to LVM at OS level ? 2) if (1's) answer is YES, what I need to do to prevent trouble occur ? If any one exprience or know the place can help me start pls share. CentOS position on systems intrusion at Red Hat

Earlier in the day today Red Hat made an announcement [1] that there had been an intrusion into some of their computer systems last week. In the same announcement they mention that some of the packages for OpenSSH on RHEL-4 ( i386 and x86_64 ) as well as RHEL-5 ( x86_64 ) were signed by the intruder. In their announcement they also clarified that they were confident that none of these, potentially compromised, packages made their way into or through RHN to client and customer machines. As a security measure a script [3] was made available along with a semi-detailed description of the issue [2]. We take security issues very seriously, and as soon as we were made aware of the situation I undertook a complete audit of the entire CentOS4/5 Build and Signing infrastructure. We can now assure everyone that no compromise has taken place anywhere within the CentOS Infrastructure. Our entire setup is located behind multiple firewalls, and only accessible from a very small number of places, by only a few people. Also included in this audit were all entry points to the build services, signing machines, primary release machines and connectivity between all these hosts. Is there a way to save the routing table permanently?

I'm adding the default gateway to the route through "route add default gw 10.10.10.10" which is also shown in "route -n" but the problem is that as soon as I restart the network through /etc/init.d/network restart; the route sets to default one...! SO, my question is there any way to save the modified route permanently by hardcoding the changes? Thanks.

Yum Issues with Dev groups

Just my luck, None of my CentOS systems or my Fedora systems can #yum groupinstall "Development Tools" "Development Libraries"? Both are having dep issues? Is that a coincidence, or what's going on? Hi list Can someone tell me what the exact CentOS policy for end-of-life is for 5.0? Let me explain: I have been using RHEL for a number of years and had to switch to Fedora for installing some packages only supported under F6. As I find Fedora's policy for release life duration too stringent (and I do no longer need the packages that made me choose F6), I'm considering switching over to CentOS5.0 I know, 5.0 is not the most recent release, but that one is supported by Parallel Pro (new package I need) Thanks

Simple IPTABLES Question

I added these rules to IPTABLES to slow brute force attacks. iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 22 -s my_subnet/24 -j ACCEPT iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 22 -m state --state NEW -m recent --set --name SSH iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 22 -m state --state NEW -m recent --update --seconds 60 --hitcount 5 --rttl --name SSH -j DROP I would like log entries when connections are dropped to see that its working. How do I do that? iscsi and the last mile...

I have a new Dell PowerEdge 2950 running CentOS 5.0 out-of-box and a Dell MD3000i. I am new to iscsi and, with google and included documentation, am having a heck of a time trying to get the RAID volumes I have created on the 3000i to be seen by the OS as usuable drives. I have printed out SMcli and iscsiadm documentation. I have asked on the linux-poweredge(a)dell.com site, too. Many leads, but there is something - be it a command, setting, or whatever else, that is just eluding me. How do I get the RAID devices seen on my C 5.0 box? The setup is currently on an isolated LAN and has no valuable data - all testing and experimenting by me, for now, to learn how it works, before putting it into production. Xen "bridged" networking config

I've got a Centos guest and a Windows 2003 server guest running in Xen under Centos (5.2 in both cases), and they can get out to the network, and I can ping them from dom0. This is my first Xen install, and I haven't used Linux as a router before (I'm very familiar with it as a webserver and development platform) so I'm a bit weak on the bridging code and NAT / IP masquerading. (Amusingly, I was a voting member of IEEE 802.1 and worked on the .d standard for bridging; that was back when it was new, more than a decade ago, and my memories from then may be doing more harm than good now.) The problem is, I can't originate a connection to either guest from outside. Dom0 is getting IP 192.168.1.91 (from our enterprise DHCP server), which is a reasonable address. There are two bridges created, xenbr0 and virbr0. Virbr0 has an IP of 192.168.122.1 assigned to it, which evidence suggests did *not* come from our DHCP server. The interfaces for the two guest domains have 192.168.122.185 and .198 assigned, also not from our DHCP server. The IPs plus the behavior (can't connect in, can connect out) make it look very much like NAT has been setup, but I can't find any evidence like a "MASQUERADE" target in the dom0 iptables or anything (I've never run NAT on Linux, I could be looking for the wrong thing in the wrong place). This setup does not look anything like the "default" bridging config I find documented on various Xen websites (particularly <http://wiki.xensource.com/xenwiki/XenNetworking>). None of them have "virbr0". I've seen a number of reports that people's working configurations broke when the upgraded to Centos 5.2, so I'm suspecting that what I'm seeing here is how Centos 5.2 chooses to package Xen. And hence I'm asking on a Centos list :-). I created these guests in virt-manager. I selected the "bridging" network configuration. Oh, ip forwarding is on in dom0; that was one of the things several places I looked said was an obvious fix for my problem, but it was already on in the default config, and it wasn't helping. I'm currently not using either vlan or bonding, though I believe both are in my future. One thing at a time; and if I understand the basics I think I just might be able to take it to the next stage. This has gotta be simple; I want the most basic bridged configuration, with the guests directly visible to the outside world. kickstart error on 5.2 exception

Hi, I am trying to get my kickstart file that worked under 5.1 to work under 5.2 centos x86_64. This is the error that I get. On the screen it says Exception occured and gives me the option to save it. This is that file. I dont see any odd that would cause it to crash. Can anyone help. My kickstart file is in the mix below. Seems to be related to network, my line seems fine (I think) for network. HI, This is more general linux related topic , i want to know few basic things. 1) How file systeem get corrupted on linux? 2) why,when and how fsck to be run without lossing data? 3) Is there is any other tool other than fsck available for file system check . 4) what are all the precaution to be made to prevent file system corruption. 5) why & when the system will get hanged and what are all the possible reasons? I've been taking a look at how RedHat (and CentOS) handles logrotate. According to the man page, logrotate is supposed to be fired by cron. Hi All, I have some general questions about setting up partitions. I have been struggling to get an array to mount since I upgraded the drives and exceeded a 2 gig partition so now the logical drive won't mount after the install. That being said I have a few questions. Does anyone have any experience or advice for setting up large arrays on 5.2 x86_64? My understanding is I need to setup a GPT partition but I am not having any luck getting a good configuration during the install process. Should I just not try during the install and use parted afterwards or is there a better way to go about this? Also, during testing I just let it do a default configuration on the drives and noticed that it setup a 100mgb partition with the boot map on it and the rest as a LVM volume. Is this a preferred way to do it these days? Thanks for any advice/help Brian

Per-user limits for port access

Centos 5.x again... Is there a way to limit port access on a per-user basis? My practical goal is to limit, who is allowed to use SMTP AUTH in Sendmail. Any possible solutions appreciated... CentOS5 running very slowly on a core 2 duo with 4 GB RAM

Hi, I've installed CentOS5.2 on an INTEL Core 2 Duo (Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E6550 @ 2.33GHz), 4 GB RAM (MemTotal: 4072176 kB) and my system gets sevarel minutes to startup, specially on udev daemon. Once the system is UP, every command I run gets 100% CPU and every is very slowly at the point yum -y update never ends. The system installed by default this kernel 2.6.18-53.el5PAE. I would like to know what's wrong with my server. Do I have to install another kernel? Can you help me? Disabling IPv4

I want to seriously work with IPv6 and not have stray IPv4 functions messing with me. So in /etc/sysconfig/network, I commented out NETWORKING=yes. I have NETWORKING_IPV6=yes. In /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts I altered ifcfg-eth0, setting BOOTPROTO=none. That was enough for eth0 to only have IPv6 working on it (have IPV6INIT=yes and IPV6_AUTOCONF=yes). But lo had IPv4. So I commented out all of the IPV4 lines in ifcfg-lo. Still have IPv4 on lo. How do I disable that? Yes, I did an service network restart after changing ifcfg-lo.

qt3.3 is default in environment, I want it to be qt4

At the current time, the environment is using qt3 values, as in $ env | grep QT QTDIR=/usr/lib/qt-3.3 QTINC=/usr/lib/qt-3.3/include QTLIB=/usr/lib/qt-3.3/lib $ env | grep PATH PATH=/usr/lib/qt-3.3/bin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/lib/ccache:/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/home/pauljohn/bin I also have QT4 installed, and I want programs to find those libraries and include files instead of these ones. I am trying to use extlinux to boot a usb device. I ran the following on the device: mkdir -p /boot/extlinux extlinux /boot/extlinux cat /usr/lib/syslinux/mbr.bin > /dev/sde cp /boot/vmlinuz.latest.kernel /boot/extlinux/linux I then attempt to boot it and it starts going however I says kernel panic no root device. What have I missed. I followed the instructions in /usr/share/doc/syslinux/extlinux.doc Thanks, Jerry

Best way to migrate a server?

I was just wondering what recommendations you have on migrating a CentOS 5 install between servers? I've done similar in the past by setting up a minimal install in the new server, use tar to copy over the old install and reboot. I was thinking of rsync this time. Is that an acceptable thing to do or have I missed something important? thanks

centos on intel D945GCLF board

Hi, I am trying to install centos on the intel D945GCLF board. It's a mini-ITX board with the atom processor and it uses the Realtek RTL8102EL LAN chipset. When I disable the on-board LAN card it installs and runs OK, but when I enable it, I get kernel panic at boot. The board runs perfectlj with Fedora 9 (with the latest kernel) or with Ubuntu server. My question is: is there some way to run centos on this board (test kernel, i can try for example)?
