This is probably a dumb question, but I haven't found anything that clearly describes what I need. My system has 2 IDE (PATA) hard drives and 2 SATA hard drives. /dev/hda is the boot drive, but /dev/sda contains my CentOS installation, including /boot, /, /home and swap. I know for a fact that there is no MBR on /dev/sda because the system refuses to boot from it. I would like to rearrange the boot order to use /dev/sda as the boot device (mainly because I'm probably going to get either another disk drive or both another disk drive and a m/b soon that does not have two IDE connectors (I have two IDE DVD burners) and I'd rather not replace any more than absolutely necessary to accomplish this. So, what is the best way to put a correct MBR that will boot from /dev/sda on /dev/sda if /dev/sda is the first boot device? Thanks. mhr

Running CentOS 5.2 with the following BIND update rpm, installed with "yum update" - bind-9.3.4-6.0.2.P1.el5_2. Our master DNS has an rrset-order stanza with "order fixed" entries similar to the following: rrset-order { class IN type A name "abc.foobar123.com" order fixed; class IN type A name "def.foobar123.com" order fixed; class IN type A name "ghi.foobar123.com" order fixed; [ stuff deleted ] } When restarting BIND, I find LOTS of these entries in /var/log/messages: rrset-order: order 'fixed' not fully implemented rrset-order: order 'fixed' not fully implemented rrset-order: order 'fixed' not fully implemented According to this page, BIND can be compiled with the "enabled-fixed-rrset" option to support this. How to determine what switches were used to compile the BIND RPM I downloaded with "yum update?" >From http://www.isc.org/index.pl?/sw/bind/view/?release=9.5.0 : 2362. Please help: The process of am-utils map key lookup

Hi, I am using am-utils(amd binary daemon) to auto mount home directories. the mounting process seems working fine but I am still not understand how the amd map key(s) lookup process works. I've carefully read the am-utils(amd) document at http://am-utils.org/docs/am-utils/am-utils_8.html, especially the chapter "3.2 How keys are looked up" but am still not clear. For example, I'd like to access /home/dumbboy/files/deleteme, what is the key to be used, and how the lookup/match happens? and how the mount operations happens? Thanks a lot. mystery process "unit"

Ok, dumb question. On a certain LAMP server I am seeing in 'ps auxf' a process called "unit" with no arguments or other path info. It has a fairly low pid, 3041, indicating it might have been started soon after reboot (last week). but ps says it was started yesterday, I don't see it on any of 3 other CentOS machines. It is hard to google for such a generic name. So does anyone either know what it is, or how I can find out more about it? Sam

Looking for remote console on iPv6 without security layer

I am looking for a remote console program that I can run over IPv6. I do not need it to supply its own security layer, as I will be running it over HIP (http://infrahip.hiit.fi/) I have discovered that VNCSERVER that comes with Centos does not support IPv6. I would have to pay for a copy of Enterprise VNC from RealVNC for IPv6. I am having strange font problems wiht tightVNC (which is claimed to work with IPv6). FreeNX works with SSH, and it is not clear how to run it without SSH. For my purpose, I do not want to layer multiple security transports. So recommendations???

SCO 7.1 on full virtualization mode

Hi, I am trying to install SCO 7.1 on Centos 5.2 in full virtualization mode.But the installation requires booting from a floppy drive provide in the SCO CD. I tried different ways to attach floppy drive to the guest.I even tried providing floppy image as a drive to the guest but guest is not booting from floppy. Sendmail with TLS, permission problem

Hello, list, I have a problem with Sendmail configuration. I'm building (on CentOS 5) a "dual-MTA" setup with amavisd-new (as specified in amavisd-new documentation, file README.sendmail-dual). So far so good. But when I tried to add server SMTP-AUTH and TLS, I get a strange, permission-related error, and STARTTLS will not start. ext2online / ext2resize

I'm running CentOS 5.2 x x86_64. I did an lvextend of a logical volume, and proceeded to run one of the ext2 utilities (e.g. ext2online, ext2resize) and found to my surprise that it wasn't on there. So I started googling around, and as far as I can see, though I'm not sure, they're supposed to be a part of the e2fsprogs package. Well, it's installed on the system, at least the x86_64 version is. Should I be downloading the i386 version of that package? If I do, will I be stomping on the x86_64 tools? Is there another package I should be looking at? BTW, I tried loading the source, and compiling, ./configure and make fails. === Al

Need to restart ypserv to update the nis maps

Hi I use NIS om my network (CentOS4.6). When an update on a map occurs (home directory changed in /etc/passwd for instance), I run make -C /var/yp/ and check the result on a client. On the client I use "ypcat passwd" and find indeed that the update has propagated (the clients run ypbind service). On the client I have configured /etc/nsswitch.conf with : passwd: files nis shadow: files nis group: files nis The problem is however that on the client, if I try to use the new data, it still uses the old one. For instance "cd ~john" still directs me to the old path instead of to the updated path (as correctly reported by "ypcat passwd"). To solve it I need to restart the ypserv service on the nis server for every change. Does anyone now what could be the problem or where I should look? Apparently the OS gets password and user info using another way than the ypcat tool. (ypserv-2.13-18,ypbind-1.17.2-13) Thanks, Theo

Starting with rhel 5.2, Redhat provides sun java in the Supplementary channel. Are there any plans to release sun-java in the centos extra or plus repo ? Would be nice to keep sun java up to date using yum. Thnx, Stephan

Question about Open SSH Public Keys

Hi People I am setting up some systems with ssh public keys and as part of this I am using the from directive inside .ssh/authorized_keys. Currently I am using the IP address to control the source. eg from="10.0.0.1" but on one CentOS 4 System that is up to date this will only work if I replace the IP with the DNS name of the server. I have verified that DNS is resolving the DNS Name to the correct IP address on the server in question and all seems to be fine. Aside from this CentOS Box have only been able to test this out on some old FC6 Machines and they behave as I expected. Anyone got any ideas why this might be happening ? I have compared the sshd config between the FC6 Machines and the CentOS Box and can't spot anything that would explain the issue. Thanks for any ideas, and have a nice day :)

Hello folks, I am trying to add HDLC module support in the menuconfig. However, I am facing difficulties in rebuilding the kernel and modules. My main objective is to get the HDLC supported in kernel 2.6.9. I have a CentOS 4.4 with kernel 2.6.9.42. I need help in finding the best way to add the HDLC support whether through getting an RPM package for it or refering me to the right procedure in rebuilding the kernel. Help: Server security compromised?

Hi, Need some help about this as it's gotten me really concerned. I'm probably reading too much into this but for about two weeks now my daily log has increased by almost 10 times. After running through a couple of days of logs with a script, it seems that I'm getting flooded on SMTP from this IP 219.64.114.52 which belongs to VSNL and appears to be statically assigned IP (219.64.114.52.chn.bb-static.vsnl.net) This IP address is apparently listed in the spamhous.org Policy Block List, eXploit Block List and Composite Block List, which basically indicates it's either an open proxy or a hijacked system. I'm not sure what it's trying to do, but for exactly 10 hours a day which correspond to India 9:30am or so until 7pm or so, I will get massive amounts of SMTP connections from this host. So I thought I could just block the IP using iptables. I had a bad experience locking myself out by accident after editing the iptables file so for this time I decided to test from command line first using instructions from the Internet like this /sbin/iptables -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -s 219.64.114.52 -j DROP and I got an error that chain/command /sbin/iptables -L produces "blank" output [root@myserver confused]# /sbin/iptables -L Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination which was of course a shock to me, since that seems to say that my server firewall is basically non-existent. I did a /sbin/service iptables restart and iptables -L produced the expected output showing all the rules on file. I could then add the new rule from command line without any messages. Minutes later, my tail -f on the exim log started spewing the smtp messages AGAIN. iptables -L again shows NO RULES Everytime I restart, iptables, for a short while, the rules are there. But minutes later, it's wiped. So I'm very concerned that the server had been compromised and something is wiping my iptables. Or am I just badly mistaken about the way iptables -L is supposed to work? If not, what should I do next to find and eliminate this problem? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Mount a Xen disk image file

Xen and bonding on Centos 5.2

Hi folks, I am stuck with a weird phenomenon. I have set up two servers as xen servers with bonded interfaces (mode 1). The bond interface works fine on both servers as long as xen is not used. When using xen's network-bridge script (with netdev=bond0), one server works fine without problems, and the other starts upping and downing the slave interfaces of the bond in a very fast manner (several runs per second). Both configurations are identical, the only difference is: - the working server has tg3 nic drivers - the dysfunctional server has e100 nic drivers. Does it really depend on the nic driver if bonding works? And why does it not work in xen, but work fine without xen? What can I do to analyse the problem? I know I could ask this on the xen list, but I fear that this is a redhat/centos specific phenomenon. Any hint or help is appreciated. Dirk

can't access irc server on xen domU, please help

New kernel and keyboard shortcuts

Has anyone else noticed or had a problem with keyboard shortcuts not working properly after the last kernel update? I'm finding on my 64-bit home system that even <alt><f4> no longer works in my terminal windows, and none of the normal keyboard shortcuts in OOo work properly either. Just curious if it's just me.... mhr

I need to start running a dual head on one of my machines. Eventual target is CentOS 5.x. Decided to test first on my 4.6 setup (eventually it will achieve 5.x). Both machines are fully up to date. The test machine is 4.6, 2 radeon video cards. Searched the web, CentOS site, even bugzilla. This bugzilla entry from a 4.2 system), http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=1875 had only a WFM response. I've attached a gzipped text file of pertinent information. Briefly, kudzu did the right thing when I installed the second card. System-config-display also behaved correctly. X start ok, but will only use one head at a time. Adding a second "BusID" so that both cards are explicitly addressed didn't help. When the 2 "BusID" entries are switched, the active screen doesn't move (it's always "Screen0") and the ignored screen ("Screen1") remains the same. The monitor attached to the video card for "Screen0" becomes the active one. Q1: Anyone have a two video card CentOS 4.6 setup working? Q2: Is it working in CentOS 5? Q3: Anyone see something I'm doing wrong? Suggestions? TIA, -- Bill

Good reference for dkms?

I've just built the nvidia driver for my home machine for the third time and I'd like to put it into a dkms format, but I'm not entirely clear on what goes where to make this work. I googled for a good primer on dkms, but what I'm finding is essentially equivalent to the man page, which, like most Unix/Linux man pages, doesn't really tell you "how to do this from scratch." I'm using nvidia's latest driver, r. 173.14.09, which seems to be more recent than the last one I have from rpmforge (1.0.9755, IIRC), although I'm not sure I really need anything other than the rpmforge version. Should I 1) revert to the rpmforge version and re-add it back into the dkms tree? MRTG Problem - no traffic recorded

Hi all, I've just recently replaced my old firewall with a new one, running CentOS 5.. Yesterday, I decided to get MRTG up and running again, so I entered sections like this into the mrtg.conf file: Title[vlan10]: Bandwidth usage on tenchi.4th-age.com (Internet) PageTop[vlan10]: <H1>Traffic stats on VLAN 10 (Internet)</H1> Target[vlan10]: `ifconfig vlan10 | /usr/bin/awk '/bytes/{ gsub(/:/, " "); print $3 "\n" $8}'` MaxBytes[vlan10]: 12500000 Options[vlan10]: noinfo, growright, bits WithPeak[vlan10]: wmy The Target is all on one line in the file. This config worked fine on my old firewall, but on the new, I get this in the log files: [root@tenchi mrtg]# head /var/lib/mrtg/vlan10.log 1218175802 -1 -1 1218175802 3 3 3 3 1218175501 3 3 3 3 1218175500 3 3 3 3 When testing, I ran the mrtg command, precisely as it is written in /etc/cron.d/mrtg, and that placed real values where now it says -1, but as soon as the cron job ran, the values became -1 again. This is probably a known issue, but just in case. On my Desktop, I am running SELinux in Permissive mode. When I restart the system, or shut it down, I notice this message: "Stopping setroubleshootd failed". On x86_64 I installed the latest kernel and nothing.. :-( Regards..Israel

I am using Cent OS 4.6 and a USB speaker (no sound card but USB speaker works fine). Problem is, if I use something like xine or realplay and then later want to visit youtube through firefox, the youtube sound won't work, because even though I exited xine or realplay somehow it still has control of the sound device. Someone in fedora list suggested pulse audio but I can't get that installed. Any suggestions? I don't want to have to reboot my machine all the time.

pam max locked memory issue after updating to 5.2 and rebooting

We were previously running 5.1 x86_64 and recently updated to 5.2 using yum. Under 5.1 we were having problems when running jobs using torque and the solution had been to add the following items to the files noted "* soft memlock unlimited" in /etc/security/limits.conf "session required pam_limits.so" in /etc/pam.d/{rsh,sshd} This changed the max locked memory setting in ulimit as follows: Before the change rsh nodeX ulimit -a still gives us max locked memory (kbytes, -l) 32 After the change rsh nodeX ulimit -a max locked memory (kbytes, -l) 16505400 The nodes have 16gb of memory. Now after the 5.2 updates those files are all the same and on most of the nodes we haven't yet rebooted them due to log running processes but a few nodes have been restarted and now that jobs are starting to be put on them we are back to max locked memory of 32k rather than 16gb. CentOS 5.2 - Nautilus - file types are not associated with an action and icons are not displayed

Hi all, I use CentOS 5.2 as a desktop and the Gnome Nautilus doesn't display icons related to the file types and all associated actions ("open with") are lost. It is so bad, that the desktop shortcuts are displayed as ordinary files "Filesystem.desktop" or "openoffice.org-1.9-calc.desktop", and when I click on them, the Nautilus wants to know what it should do with these files. The problem emerged after I installed the new kernel (2.6.18-92.1.10.el5) and uninstalled packages "joystick", "slrn" and "planner". All user accounts have the same problem, when I run the Nautilus as root (sudo nautilus), it works fine => probably some access restrictions. I run the Nautilus with strace, but the output is too messy to provide some sensible information. Any hint what to do is welcomed. Best Regards Vaclav

I was introduced to linux a couple of years ago by way of FC5 (known about it for years, always wanted to migrate, dabbled in RH6 about 8 years ago and dropped it). I was supposed to get CentOS 4.4 but got FC5, allegedly -devel. Big mistake, I had it removed and CentOS 4.4 installed after a couple of months. The stability, the lower number of updates, reduced to effective nil dependency hell (provided that I stuck with the repo stuff, and even then many outside stuff) and long-term support was what attracted me. The 6 month treadmill was one of several issues I had; why spend 6 months installing and fighting with a system, only to have to go through the trouble of reinstalling after 6 months and starting again? However getting my "new" printer (about one year on the market and had it since December 2007) to work on my desktop under 5.2 as well as getting, then keeping keeping wireless on my laptop using a 4 year old PCMCIA card were deal breakers. I currently run 3 computers at home, one on the same box that got the 4.4 a couple of years ago and now upgraded to 4.6. The other two ... I had 4.4 on one and the other is a new acquisition, and installed 5.2 on both, and within a month I had to move to Ubuntu (aaaarrrrgghhhh-lee. I will be moving to F9 soon if things work out, Ubuntu is a strange breed that works, with a consumer experience virtually identical to what I had under CentOS with the exception of stuff that works with no trouble and a few nuances, but ... something rubs me the wrong way. Things like the Ubuntu customizations to the Gnome menus and the fact that the default user is defacto root while root is relegated to uselessness (including not being able to log into its own desktop to take advantage of the gui admin tools!) Long and the short of it, I would rather keep up with CentOS, made a rash decision to use Ubuntu 8.06 since it works and has the saving grace of being LTS, and will look into Fedora 9 since I'd rather be running a(n albeit small) Red Hat farm instead of a mostly Ubuntu/Debian farm. I still agree that CentOS is a robust and highly appropriate desktop. Just getting it to do basic things like wireless and printing (forget easily, just at all) need MAJOR work from upstream. Oh well, I don't pay site licences and CentOS strives for 100% binary compatibility ....

Helo, I'm trying to update a centos server with a kernel form the centos.plus repro because it contain Firewire/IEEE1394 support. rsyslog and imuxsocks

Hi folks, I have installed rsyslog and rsyslog-mysql from the base repository, but the loadable module "imuxsocks" seems not to be part of these packages. Does this have a certain reason? And is there any other way to get this module besides compiling rsyslog on my own? Any hint or help is appreciated. Dirk

CentOS 5.2 -- how do I choose a wireless network?

Hi. We have a Windows laptop that has gotten too slow, it's borderline unusable, so I burned a CentOS 5.2 32-bit Live CD, just to try it out in the home. It boots up fine, but it does not connect to the Internet... Now we normally connect through a wireless network, there are several around here -- on the Windows box we choose the network to which to connect... but on CentOS there is no such menu? I went to Administration -> Network, and enabled the wireless interface, set to Auto and to DHCP, but it said, unable to assign IP address, and no connectivity... How do I connect to a wireless network, please? Thanks, Aleksey

DVI + VGA?

I have an LCD monitor with both VGA and DVI connectors on it, and a video card to match (both connectors). If I want to switch from the VGA (currently in use) to the DVI, do I need to do anything special other than switch wires? I didn't see anything in google that was helpful (though I may not have used a smashing search...). Thanks. mhr

rsync question

Hi All, I am trying to understand the purpose of rsyncd. Why does it exist? Why not just use rsync ad-hoc or via script? Also, to a more serious note. I need to keep a filesystem on 1 server and another server synced by. What is the best way to do this? I want to have /source and /target to be exactly the same. I don't want any extra files in /target. I want the timestamps to be the exact same in /target. Does anyone have a good rsync arguments I can use? I have been using -avzl but I was wondering if there was anything better. TIA

64bit vs 32bit

I am upgrading a server that mounts in a rack. Its going on the cheapest socket 775 CPU I can buy and in a 1u rack case. All its for is keeping some log files and doing some simple MYSQL/PHP database stuff. Not a work horse at all. Anyway, is it better to go 64bit or 32bit for the CentOS 5.x install? I do not see needing huge amounts of RAM or anything like that on this box. Would the 32bit version be more tried, proven and stable? Matt
