Widescreen monitor won't configure to a wide screen

I just put a 1680x1050 LCD monitor on my home system, and I went into system-config-display to configure it as such, and it just won't take. I had to tweak some of the settings by hand, but when I log out, I get the wide screen for both the Nvidia driver splash screen and the login screen. But, when I log in, It jumps back to 1280x1024 and refuses to run in wide screen mode. I tried with these commented out, but it still would not work. One thing I noticed is that when the gdm starts up, it goes from "auto adjust" (wide screen) to "analog-d" (non-ws) - dunno what that means. Any suggestions? It's really annoying to have a wide screen and not be able to use it.... Thanks. mhr What am I missing?

rpm dependency question

I have an rpm I've created that has a dependency on a library provided by a third party. This dependency is not specified anywhere in my spec file yet the package seems to know about when I run: # rpm -qip --requires MyPackage.rpm The third party rpm is installed and uninstalled via a vendor-supplied script so that they can prompt you to accept licenses and so on. Problem is, the vendor supplied un-install script fails to un-install because of the dependency MyPackage has on one of it's libraries. Is there a way to build my package so that it has no knowledge of external dependencies? My other option is to alter the vendor supplied uninstall script so that it does rpm -e --nodeps. I'd very much prefer to not mess with the vendor supplied scripts. I guess as a related question, how does my rpm know about external dependencies? Is rpmbuild doing some analysis of it's content via ldd or something? -Mark -- Mark Belanger LTX Corporation

Mounting File Share Using CIFS ?'s

I have been trying to mount a windows file share so I can use it for remote storage particularly for my Deki Wiki attachments. Anyway, I seem to have a mount established by doing the following. 1. Added following line to /etc/fstab //fs01/wikidata /var/www/dekiwiki/attachments cifs user,uid=500,rw,suid,username=wikisvcacct,password=testpwd,domain=corporate 2. Then ran following command to mount it. mount //fs01/wikidata 3. Then ran following command to confirm mount. df Output of 'df': //fs01/wikidata 1821803064 1435671544 386131520 79% /var/www/dekiwiki/attachments This would appear to indicate the mount was successful correct? If I understand this whole thing, if i change directory to /var/www/dekiwiki/attachments would I then be using or looking at //fs01/wikidata ? Or am I still looking at the local file system? Or does it depend on the user? Since I set this up for the dekiwiki user with uid=500, would I logged in as root be able to access this mount or do I need to add another line in the /etc/fstab for root? Thanks!

Will CentOS 6's upstream be based on Fedora 10?

Hi All, The subject says it all. I'm asking because I've found Fedora 9 to be buggy as hell - it is one of the worst Fedora releases I've ever used (and I've been using it since Fedora Core 1). I'm putting up with it for my work laptop, but it's not fun. :( My main home machine is still on Fedora Core 6 and will stay there until CentOS 6 comes out. I don't want to use CentOS 5 because it's upstream is based on Fedora Core 6, and I want something new! When CentOS 6 hits, I will be using it for my work laptop. I might just keep Fedora for home my machine. I haven't decided yet if I want to move up to Fedora 10 or CentOS 6. Wiki updates needed for rpmrepo.org when it's up & running

When rpmrepo.org is up and running properly, there are 2 or 3 Wiki pages that need to be updated. I wiped the HD on my daughter's box and am trying to install multimedia on it again. usb to usb comm ports - possible? how?

I have an i686 mono core system configured as a CentOS-5.2 server. It has one DB9P RS-232 serial connector and six USB connectors. The DB9p is configuered as STTY0 for the attached MultiTec MT5638ZBA fax modem. I would very much like to connect my MS WindowsXPpro laptop, which only has USB connectors, to this server via telnet or ssh over a direct connection. Is there a way to connect / configure a comm port to a raw USB port in windows / centos and to use a direct cable connection between the two? Or, is a usb to serial converter device required at both ends? I expect to use either puTTY or hyperterm as the windows client. What I need to know is: Is this is even possible? How do you configure the tty ports on CentOS for this to work? How do you configure the comm port on MS-WinXPpro? What cable does one require? I have never had this problem before since all our hosts have previously come equipped with two serial ports. However, the next generation machines apparently have no RS-232 serial ports at all, just six usb ports. So, this problem might as well be faced now as later, when it is unavoidable. Hi! I have a new shiny CentOS 5.2 server freshly installed. I wanted to install VMWare Server but the installer wants to compile a module. I thought, no problem: Let's install compiler and libraries. slow NFS speed

We upgraded from a 10/100Mbs to a 2 100/1000 bonding. We notice the speeds of NFS to be around 70-80Mb/sec. Which is slow, especially with bonding. I was wondering if we need to tune anything special with the Network and NFS. Does anyone have any experience with this? TIA

Most likely, your problem is this line in /etc/named.conf: query-source address * port 53; Remove that and retest. However, be forewarned that it could cause problems with restarting named.. in which case, do not delete the line, just comment it, then uncomment if you get into trouble and reconsult the archives. Hi, I have a Centos 4.6 machine that even tough has been updated with the latest bind 9.2.4-28.0.1.el4 is marked as vulnerable by https://www.dns-oarc.net/oarc/services/dnsentropy. I have another machine which also uses that same distro and is not. Do I have to do any other update?

Windows XP fixmbr from Centos?

I am still dead on my corporate system, and the XP boot CD I brought won't boot. And so far I have not found anyone here at the IETF meeting that happens to have one in their bag of tricks... So I found instructions on doing this in Ubuntu: http://www.arsgeek.com/2008/01/15/how-to-fix-your-windows-mbr-with-an-ubunt… I have my Centos install CD 1 of 6 that gets me into rescue. Is it able to fix my mbr? Problem I have with the above instructions (of course I have not tried them as I would have to burn the Ubuntu live CD), is I cannot write anything to the harddrive to store a program to fix the drive (at least that is my reading of the instructions). I suppose I can put a USB drive on the system to hold any temp thing?

Rapid deployment of CentOS on HP Proliant machines

Has anyone successfully deployed CentOS on HP Proliant servers using the Altiris Rapid Deployment (RDP) framework? This works out of the box with RHEL 5.1 but I have not been able to get this to work with CentOS 5.1. If anyone knows of an article on all the details to be able to deploy CentOS to a bare machine Proliant Server, I would appreciate a pointer. I did make the changes to the adlagent installation to add the "--install-as=redhat --toolbox==redhad" and that allowed me to get much further along in the process. My end result is that instead of booting to CentOS after the RDP job is done I get a notice that "Admin" is not a valid boot option. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Fred

I downloaded the FC rpm for sip.communicator.org: http://www.sip-communicator.org/index.php/Main/Download yum localinstall of this rpm came up needing alsa-oss as a dependency. I have really tried to find this, looking at over rpmforge, kbsingh, and atrpms. So can anyone point me to this dependency?

Evolution Calendar crash

This was happening, *very* frequently, after the upgrade to CentOS 5.2 (32 bit). Mark (MHR) also had problems with this. Neither of us could report it with BugBuddy, which requests a newer version of GNOME. Cyrus + Ldap...

Hi, I have a server running with Centos 5.1 and: Cyrus: Lan POP and IMAP server both with SSL and plain and login mechanisms LDAP with SSL + SASL User passwords in LDAP are encrypted. Modem network card conflict

Hi All, Here's a strange one for you... I have a Linux box with a PCMCIA adapter PCI card in it. Plugged into said card is a cellular modem card. I can configure wvdial and dial the modem card perfectly. My ppp0 interface comes up and I can ping everything. I also have a network card on the motherboard. Once again, by itself the network card works correctly. That is with the modem NOT dialed up. Here's where things get interesting... If I flush the firewall rules: iptables -F Bring down the eth0 interface: ifconfig eth0 down Connect with the modem: wvdial & Bring up the interface: ifconfig eth0 192.168.7.1 At this point the ppp0 interface drops off and redials. It is no longer able to maintain a stable connection. ppp0 and eth0 do not use the same IP range. Thoughts? Shawn

70-80MB/s is good for NFS/CIFS networking given the 4k block size and network latency. For someone making the switch from Windows to Linux, Ubuntu may be the preferred option. But in a lab or on a widespread basis, there are some things that hold me back. 1. The basic install of Ubuntu is less security conscious. There's no firewall in the default installation. (That is justified on the grounds that no public services are offered in the default configuration. The default iptables framework allows everything. However, users can easily install services, without realizing that there is no firewall.) It doesn't (by default) secure the bootloader with a password. I noticed that default users have more privilidges in Ubuntu than Fedora (they can use fuse file system). Without having a comprehensive knowledge of Ubuntu, I'm not sure how many other "gotchas" are waiting. Maybe I've not found the CentOS gotchas yet. 2. It includes too many invitations to ordinary users to add/remove packages. If somebody tries to run something that is not installed, the shell replies "you can install that if you type sudo apt-get install xyz". They can't do that, they don't have privileges. The Applications menu has an add/remove package program. I don't want users to be asked to do things for which they don't have privileges. The whole design of the package manager is to not be automatic, but ask for constant user intervention. Not good with many machines. 3. I do not have as much faith in the deb packaging process. For me, this the biggest reason I'm hanging around in the RPM distributions. I learned RPM building from the classic Maximum RPM, which is emphatic about keeping the 'pristine source code.' If you have never built a Debian package, you will will be in for a surprise. You can't even build a Deb package unless you manually untar the source code and create a directory inside it. My experience is that it is much harder to rebuild a debian package than it is to rebuild an SRPM. Most of the time, if you find an SRPM and you want to build it on your system, it is as simple as "rpmbuild --rebuild whatever.src.rpm". I can't find anything comparable to that for Debian. syslog question

I have a 64bit centos 5.2 system. My router supports sending logs to a syslog server, so I was hoping to send them to my centos box so they are easier to keep an eye on. I've been googling for howto's etc, but I didn't think syslog would be that difficult. Do I need to use syslog-ng or can I use the syslog that's installed with centos 5.2? Extended characters not working on CentOS

A friend of mine here at work pointed me at this web page www.fhlcell.org where there are a lot of Chinese characters on the page. Interestingly enough, on my CentOS 5.2 system, with both Seamoneky 1.1.11 and Firefox 3.0, we were unable to get the characters to display properly (they showed up as the little four number boxes instead). However, on his Ubuntu system, using Firefox, they displayed just fine. Also, I just tested it in Win XP and both Seamonkey 1.1.11 and IE display it correctly. What's going on? mhr

Duplicate PV on HW RAID?

Hello, My "hardware" (?) RAID system seems to work but says "duplicate PV" while booting, I don't think I was reading them before. Any clues will be appreciated. >From what I recall: 1) RAID 1 was setup (using firmware setup program) on a machine with Intel S3200 SHV Server Board. 2) Installed Centos 5.1, default LVM style. Anaconda saw a single 500GB disk so I assumed this was a true hardware RAID system. Am I wrong here? 3) Then wanted to reduce LogVol00 so as to make room for a new, data only filesystem on its own LV. Started by booting with rescue CD, lvscanned the disk, lvchanged -a y. Intended to resize root filesystem with resize2fs. Was asked to fsck, which I did (by the way, getting many errors). Fixed them all (fingers crossed), fsck again said ok. Then resize2fs worked happily. 4) Rebooted the installed system. Now "Duplicate PV" shows at boot. Honestly I don't know whether this was being displayed before (this is an inherited server). This message shows at the screen but no record of it is kept on any log file. 5) Everything seems to work well anyway. I created a new LV as I wished, just this message keeps me thinking... Should I care? Should I fix it? Is it a true RAID board? Over the weekend, I had to make a technical support call on one of my DVD burners, and at one point the recorded message mentioned I should have my serial number handy. I thought there was a way to read that from at least one piece of software on the system, but I couldn't remember one and man -k on a number of subjects was unrevealing. Migrating RHEL 3 to Centos 5.2 - has Adaptec 2400a RAID

Greetings all. I'm new to the mailing list. Hope to get to know many of you. I'll jump right in with a recent project. I have a machine with RHEL WS 3 - Taroon; plus dual boot to Win 2000 Pro. The RAID card is Adaptec's 2400A w/128 megs cache, running RAID 10 on 4 WD's. I want to migrate to 5.2 Centos and wipe the NTFS partition. I have the 5.2 Centos DVD. Anyone see any problems, special preparation needed, whatever, to accomplish the migration? The RAID uses dpt_i2o drivers. The NVidia card can get drivers from their website, if need be to support full functionality. Please advise with any cautions, considerations, you may care to give. Thanks in advance. Ed Westphal

securing rsync over ssh

I want to secure some remote rsyncs over ssh by using the command= option in .authorized_keys. As I understand I can use only the full command there, as it is not a list of "allowed commands" but the command that will be executed when logging in with this key. Now, I'm running several rsync commands on individual directories in the root, not just one command. I do that to pull different exclude lists in. I want to exclude nothing in some directories and a few different things in other directories. rsyncing per /rooted directory seems to be the cleanest and easiest way. All other combinations of complicated exclude/include lists may have unexpected results. I thought about putting the remote command in a shell script. However, I think this won't work as each rsync on the remote side will be executed with the first rsync command in the script on the local side. Does sprof work on CentOS5?

No matter how I try, I can't seem to get a library profile from sprof on CentOS5. Does anyone know if sprof actually works on CentOS5? I'd be very interested to hear if anyone is using it successfully. At the moment I'm trying something like this to get the dump: LD_LIBRARY_PATH=. LD_PROFILE=libmy.so ./mymain where libmy.so is the library I want to profile, and mymain is the executable which links to it. This appears to create the profile dump successfully (which appears at /var/tmp/libmy.so.profile), but when I try to get a readable profile using sprof it fails: $ sprof libmy.so /var/tmp/libmy.so.profile sprof: failed to load shared object `libmy.so' I have a CentOS4 machine here, and doing the above on that works fine, but I've had no luck at all on CentOS5 (all currently up-to-date). Can anyone help? (Please!)

Samba, SELinux and system created directories

Does anybody know what 'setsebool -P samba_export_all_rw on' is actually supposed to do? I'm trying to share /tmp via samba and am seeing the same results with samba_export_all_rw set to on or off. Maybe I'm misunderstanding what this is intended to do but from windows I cannot see files in /tmp with 'tmp_t' security context (as shown by ls -lZ /tmp). I do see those with 'smbd_tmp_t' which are files placed there from windows via samba. I assumed that this boolean, when on, would allow samba to see files in /tmp regardless of security context. But I don't know how to do when facing the trouble. The difference lies in that I patched a PF_RING patch in original kernel and recompiled the kernel to run my machines. I wonder whether the patched kernel crashes the CentOS because PF_RING automatically downloads the kernel codes from www.kernel.org, but not the one from www.centos.org? Hi all, The PF_RING seems not to work smoothly in CentOS 5. Several day before, I patched the kernel 2.6.25.3 and installed the PF_RING-patched kernel in my CentOS5. Based on the PF_RING, I developed my program to capture the network packages. I wished it can work until the machine power is off. Unforturnately, no matter how to adjust my program, whole system can not run more than 48 hours. Finally, whole system crashed and syslogd said it found the following kernel output. I have contacted CentOS people, but they said they had not met the same problem in their operating system before. I googled the internet and found similar bug occurred in Ubuntu on the same hardware platform: Dell poweredge. However, the fixing has to patch current kernel source code. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/hardy/+source/linux/+bug/214814 Also, I don't know what kernel they used. I downloaded the kernel source codes from www.kernel.org and patched it with PF_RING. Then, I setup the pathed kernel to run CentOS 5. I would like to know whether I can avoid the bug if I used the original CentOS kernel code, not the one from www.kernel.org. Are there anyone who meet the similar trouble? 3ware 9650SE drivers for CentOS 5.0-EL kernel 2.6.18-8

The reason I'm using kernel 2.6.18 is that it is the only long term support version available in the LTSP project. I think after an update I will get kernel 2.6.19. The drivers available at the 3ware don't work, but I managed booting by compiling the driver myself in a vmware image. Grz, Gert.

Finally after days of trial an error I got the origin of the problem and how to solve it. I'm working from a Vista computer, so what I say here is related to this environment. 1. You have to download images (iso files) using FireFox web browser. Internet Explorer does not download them complete. 2. After downloading the image, download md5sum and checksum the file to be sure it was downloaded correctly. To do that, you have to open a command prompt in the folder where you downloaded the files and run the following command: md5sum centos-5.2-i386-bin-DVD.iso to generate the checksum number which you must compare to the one in the md5sum.txt that is found on the same site where you downloaded the files from. 3. Burn the DVD in a low speed (8x). The above 3 steps must do the trick. I hope it helps to some others new to CentOS.

rebuilding firefox-2.0.0.16 from fc8

hello, I started with ftp://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/updates/8/SRPMS/firefox-2… with the hope of rebuilding it for el5/centos. All of the dependencies were available (mostly from rpmforge) except one: something called system-bookmarks. I elected to comment out this from the spec, firefox.spec I did the extracts with CPIO rpm2cpio firefox-xxx.src.rpm | cpio -i firefox.spec then i extracted everything else and copied it to my buildroot ~/redhat/SOURCES then the moment of truth. I didn't see another way except to rebuild all so I did >rpmbuild -ba --sign ~/SPECS/firefox.spec while the above worked, it took long enough that I was able to go to dinner and have a beer before it finished. On top of that, thermal alarms went off as the CPU/PWM reached 57C/67C. a new RPM, and src.RPM were written to the BR and the RPM (i386) works fine. Was it necessary to do the complete build (-ba) since I only eliminated a single build-requires value? -- Mark

CentOS 5.2 yum repos old rpm

Hey everyone, This is the first time I've ever used a mailing-list so bear with me :-) I've just got a new dedicated server from Hostik and they've installed CentOS 5.2 on the system (awesome!) and came pre-installed with PHP, MySQL, and Apache (among other things). I noticed that PHP version is 5.1.6, the MYSQL is 5.0.45, and Apache is 2.2.3 I ran yum to update, thinking it would update them to 5.2.6, 5.0.51a-community, 2.2.9 respectively: # yum makecache # yum update Of course after some time, I realize that the CentOS 5 repos only have those versions as the latest rpms in the list. So my question is, how do I change my yum configuration to install the latest and greatest versions of rpms installed via yum? cupsd takes 100% of cpu

I have never been able to get cups to work properly since CentOS 4.x (and am now on 5.2). When I try to "service start cups", cupsd immediately starts taking 100% of the cpu. Attaching strace to it shows no system calls happening. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling cups to get fresh config files. My printers.conf is empty. This is on a completely updated x86_64 CentOS 5.2 desktop system running gnome. There are no local printers attached the the box. We have a couple of networked HP printers and a Canon. I have not added any of these printers to the configuration. A lot of Googling has not turned up any help. Have you seen this problem? Any suggestions? Thanks much, Dan

sys-unconfig

Does sys-unconfig work as advertised in 4.x? Meaning that if I have a fully configured box on my internal net and run sys-unconfig, will I be able to power up the node on a totally different network and have things work providing I answer the questions properly. Most typically this will mean taking a box that is using NIS in DNS domain A, NIS domain B, and static IP addr and move it to DNS domain C, NIS domain D, and dynamic IP. I can't remember the details now, but something didn't work right in 3.x -Mark
