Raw device gone after reboot (Centos 5.2)!!!

We are set up CENTOS 5.2 (X86) as our database server. I created raw partitions and also put definition on /etc/sysconfig/rawdevices. I can use "raw -qa" see raw partitions. The wield things is after reboot /dev/raw is not exist any more. Does anyone know how to fix it? nfs high load issues

Greetings. When I "pull" data from server A to server B, with nfs, server B reports a high load when viewed via uptime. The load is upwards of 6.x. Server A's load remains light. When I "push" the data, server A's and B's loads are relatively light. When I change the mount point from nfs to cifs, I don't see this problem. I also don't have this problem using scp. I don't recall seeing these excessive load factors when these servers ran Centos 4.x. I have noticed these problems with 5.1 and 5.2. I updated the servers from 5.1 to 5.2 yesterday. I actually have 3 servers set up the same way, and all 3 exhibit the same problem. iostat reports nothing unusual - the cpu idle percentage hovers around the high 80's to 90's. I am not seeing any network errors or collisions when viewed via ifconfig. These servers are on a gigabit network, connected via a good 3Com switch. I am getting transfer rates averaging around 55MB/sec using scp, so I don't think I have a network/wiring issue. The nics are intel 82541GI nics on a Supermicro serverboard X6DH8G. I am not currently bonding, although I want to if the bandwidth will actually increase. Both server's filesystems are ext3, 9TB, running raid 50 on a 3Ware 9550SX raid card. I have performed the tuning procedures listed on 3Ware's website. The "third" server has an XFS filesystem, and the same problem exists. I am using the e1000 driver (default on install). The servers are 64 bit, and have 2 gigs of memory. Adding memory didn't help the situation. I have tried turning autoneg off on the nic. They are running 1000baseT, full duplex. I have varied the nfs rsize and wsize parameters to no avail. I am using nfs v3. nfsv4's configs seem quite a bit different, and I haven't had a chance to familiarize myself with the changes. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. TIA, Monty

Hi there, i am looking for a bit of advice on how to proceed with a wee problem that i am having. I have a BCM4306 pcmcia card (one of the later revisions) that i use to connect to my wpa2 wireless network. This is running on an old Dell Latitude (circa 1999). I used to use fedora (7,8 and then 9) on this but 2.6.23 and 2.6.25 stopped populating various bits of /proc/acpi with the relevant information for the cpu temp sensor to be read accurately (lm_sensors doesn't detect any sensors either in 2.x or 3.x) so i am reliant on the kernel to do the necessary magic. I had been using bcm43xx then b43 to access the card with the 4.x firmware from openwrt and all was good - speedy responsive etc Got fed up with kernel updates attempting to fry the laptop as i after 2.6.23 i had to replace the mobo (opened bugzilla report, no action taken, not complaining coz hey it's a 440BX-M so is fairly unimportant in the overall scheme of things) So, as every other box in the house now runs CentOS i installed that instead. dl'd the bcm43xx-fwcutter from Karanbir (thanks btw!) cut out the bits from the 3.x firmware from the link on linuxwireless.org, altered modprobe.conf etc. Wireless now works but is *real slow* just for internet access (like minutes for pages to load). ssh, ping etc all good and quick I am wondering if it is because of the old version of BCM43xx that is in the 2.6.18 kernel (never liked softMAC much) or if something else is going on. top occasionally shows me that Xorg is sometimes going to 70-80% of cpu useage. The desktop is always really responsive and apart from the browsing issue which is upsetting my partner loads then CentOS sems ideal for this laptop. I really don't want to go back to using ndiswrapper and wondered if anyone had any pointers other than using another box with which to ssh -Y firefox & Am away from the laptop atm but if any further info is needed, dmesg, lspci etc then i will be able to provide them when i am home this evening (about 5hrs hence) Thanks in advance mike

Bonding and Xen

Does anyone has implemented this sucessfully? I am asking this because we are implementing Xen on our test lab machines, which they hold up to three 3com and intel Nics 10/100mbps based. These servers are meant to replace MS messaging and intranet webservers which holds up to 5000 hits per day and thousands of mails, and probably the Dom0 could not handle this kind of setup with only one 100mbps link, and could not afford changing all the networking hardware to gigabit, at least not yet. freenx vs vmware console

After upgrading to 5.2 and the current freenx, when I start the vmware server console (from VMware-server-1.0.6-91891) in the NX client I get Xlib: extension "XFree86-VidModeExtension" missing on display ":1000.0". in the terminal window where vmware was started and a black screen where the console of the virtual machine is supposed to be. Is there a way to make this work? I would normally ssh/freenx/vnc directly to the virtual machine but for the cases that need console access I would much rather use NX with the host machine with the vmware console conneced locally than use the vmware console remotely. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

Custom CentOS iso's

I have a consulting client who has a Linux based storage appliance which is based on Fedora Core 2. I'll pause here while you laugh... They need to upgrade to something more easily supported and CentOS is the chosen distro. They have the source RPM's for their old system stored in CVS and have a very weird/complicated build system to turn it all into an iso which I am still figuring out. They version control their source rpm's but don't really use CVS version numbers to number their distros. Instead they build an iso and name/number that and then have to keep the iso around forever. I want to go through their CVS, pick out the stuff we want to port to CentOS and trash the rest. And keep it all version controlled at the same time. The current thinking is that we want to get off of CVS and move to Mercurial. Given the above and that we want to customize our CentOS build what is the best way to do that? I am thinking we would like to work with the source rpm's. Putting binaries under version control which can just be built from the source seems silly. If we put the source rpm's and any associated build scripts in version control then given any particular repository version number we should be able to reproduce any installable ISO we created in the past. I am imagining that we will have a huge source tree of exploded SRPMS and we will go through the old CVS and evaluate all of the customizations they made and whichever are worthy can be hacked into the SRPMS, RPM's get built out of these, and an ISO gets built out of the RPM's. Does all of this sound feasible? Does CentOS already have tools for automating a complete iso build from an SRPM repository? racoon and ipsec issues

I am attempting to create an ipsec tunnel between two CentOS 5.1 systems, network-to-network with two different 192.168.xxx.0/24 LAN segments. I have gone through the documentation on the centos web site, and have the machines to the point where the /var/log/messages show ``IPsec-SA established'' on both machines after runnig ``ifup ipsec0'' (same ipsec0 on each machine). IP forwarding is configured in /etc/sysctl.conf and in the proper /proc ``file''. ``netstat -rn'' shows a reasonable looking route on each machine with the gateway as the private IP for the internal LAN. The iptables on each machine are totally clear with no filters. Attempting to ping the private interface on the remote machine results in this where the xx.xx... is the IP address of the public LAN. >From xx.xx.xxx.xxx icmp_seq=2 Destination Host Unreachable Running tcpdump on another Linux box on the remote network that is our main connection to the internet so sits between the remote machine and our T1 does not show any packets from the machine attempting to ping the remote or attempting to make an ssh connection to the remote machine's private IP. At this point I'm at a loss as what to try to debug this. My previous IPsec experience was with Freeswan on an older SuSE box which is quite different in the system setup. The centos/rh documentation is not totally clear what IP is meant by SRCGW, but looking at the ifcfg-ipsec script, it assigns the private IP of the internal network NIC if SRCGW is not set. I expected to see an ``ipsec0'' device from ``ifconfig'', as was done with freeswan, but either that's not the case with ipsec-tools or I have something hosed. Difficulties with Seamonkey plugins on 5.2

Has anyone else noticed this? I've been running a self-built, working 64-bit version of Seamonkey's 2.01a pre-release (alpha) version for the last six or seven months (because the "contributed" unofficial 64-bit build didn't work right and the official 32-bit release crashed all the time), and it's been working relatively well until recently, particularly in the area of plugins. After updating to CentOS 5.2, I noticed that the flash plugin didn't work right. This might be due to a major change in nspluginwrapper - it is now included in the CentOS (RHEL) release, as opposed to being a download from rpmforge. Problem is - it doesn't seem to work right. My flash plugin does not work. At all. There was a new official release of Seamonkey (1.1.10) with an available contributed 64-bit build (haven't gotten around to the 1.1.11 revision yet), so I though, maybe this time it will work better. I pulled down this revision and installed it. Works great - except for the flash plugin. (Actually, I only know that the acrobat reader plug-in works, but the flash plugin definitely does _not_.) I tried again with 1.1.11 here at work (32-bits) and it seems to work just fine. But, as of this morning at least, my home system absolutely does NOT work with the new nspluginwrapper, and the flash plugin does not work at all. This is true both on the 1.1.10 unofficial contributed 64-bit build, and also my home built 64-bit 2.01pre (with fresh source as of this morning). Does anyone have the new (0.9.91.5) nspluginwrapper working with the flash plugin on a 64-bit install of CentOS 5.2 and Seamonkey? Also, one of the "tricks" I learned with this whole setup was that the simplest way to "install" the plugins was simply to create symbolic links from /usr/lib64/mozlilla/plugins - I think that's right - to the relevant plugins directory. This worked until 5.2, or at least Seamonkey reports that the plugins are installed. (The AR8 plugin has serious problems, haven't gone all the way back to the AR7.9 plugin yet, and I haven't tested the mplayerplug-in yet, but the critical one is the flash plugin because so many web pages have flash videos on them these days.) Replacing custom kernel with another - with same identifier

Hi list, I just finished building a custom kernel from 2.6.18-53.1.21 source rpm - this time with ISA bus and ISAPNP support which I accidentally left out of my previous attempt. Unfortunately, this time I forgot to change my identifier in kernel-2.6.spec file. Thus I now have one *installed* kernel version *without* ISA support, and another one *with* ISA support but as rpm, not yet installed. Both kernels now have identical identifiers. What is the safe way to remove the previous installed kernel version without taking out the uninstalled new version? Is the latter safe in ~/rpmbuild/RPMS if I use 'rpm -e' to remove the former version? TIA Antti

gecko-libs dependency resurfaces

In doing an update of centos 5.2 this morning, I observed that the old gecko-libs dependency issue caused yum update to fail because it was required by nspluginwrapper (x64_86), devhelp, yelm and firefox. Also, a firefox (x64_86) showed the red hat splash screen rather than centos. Manual installation of affected rpms using --nodeps (I don't advise this) did not apear to impair the performance of any of the affected packages. Is everyone seeing this or do we have something missing in our installations? regards, benm

xdmcp to gnome desktop

Hello, i have turned on XDMCP on my CentOS 5.2 xen virtual machine running Gnome Desktop. I have X window installed on my Windows Machine (Xmanager Enterprise from Netsarang). My questions is 1) how can i reconect to working sesion (allready loged in through xdmcp) in case connection from client (x window on Windows) was dropped. When i will reconnect normaly, i am getting messages that for example Firefox is allready running and so , * it will allways open new session for me*. Thanks in advance! David Hlacik

Q about CentOS-4

I have a client with a server on CentOS-4 and I'm looking to upgrade to latest horde/imp/etc. clearly php 4.3.9-xx is not up to the task but I see that upgrades for php & mysql are in CentOS-Plus I see that CentOS-4 projects to get security updates until 3/2012 which probably is the usefulness of the hardware itself. So my questions... - Will CentOS-Plus maintain the php/mysql packages until then? - The upgrade to mysql-5...do I have to nuke the db and reload from backup or is there a possibility that the upgrade and subsequent restart of mysql will update the database stuff itself (of course I'm gonna do a complete dump of mysql data before attempting)? Samba permissions problem

Hi all, I have a permissions problem with a samba share which I really can't fathom out. I'm trying to create a fully group writable share. Easy or so I thought. As you can see from my config I am trying all the options to set files group writable, however when I create a file from the client I'm always getting the mode 0644. Does anyone have a clue why? Problems with building an rpm

I followed the setup instructions from http://www.owlriver.com/tips/non-root/ (link from the Centos wiki). All this is done on another 'clean' system, so I have to read the terminal screen there and tell what went wrong here. I then followed my colleague's instructions to get the tar, untar, autogen, configure, and finally make rpm. Well it was that make rpm command that finally failed. And sudo was the problem. I got a message something like: Assuming that you are in /etc/sudoers!!!! And then asked for a password. Which password? My userid or root's? I tried both and after 3 tries got: me is not in sudoers file. Hello, How do people here handle the situation mentioned in RH bug #379791 (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=379791)? We have a web site built using Perl Catalyst which warns about this issue. So far we managed to avoid this by not upgrading the perl package handed to us as part of an old Xen image based on CentOS 5.0, but we are now building the Xen guests without this image and generally want to keep our package up to date for security. So - is there another package available to install instead of the CentOS 5.2 version? I tried before to compile the Fedora 9 package from source but despite it being claimed to have it patched it still demonstrated the buggy behaviour (using the sample test code mentioned in the bug report). Cluster: understanding virtual IP

Hi folks, I have set up a cluster on CentOS 5.2 using /etc/cluster/cluster.conf - and it works fine. It's only purpose is to switch a virtual IP between two routers. Now the service is running, I can ping the virtual IP from outside - but this virtual IP is not bound to any interface. How does this work? Can I force the cluster to bind it to a certain interface? I need this because the routing daemon (xorp) does not make use of an ip address that is not bound to an interface. Any hint or help is appreciated. Dirk

Getting printer to work under 5.2

Hi I have a standard hplip install on my 5.2 box installed from the repos (it originally was installed from the 5.1 disks and followed any upgrade that may have occured in the transition to 5.2). My printer is a HP Deskjet F4180 connecting via USB. I can't get the printer to work. Documents manually printed from the file menu in OO.o 2.3 stagnate in a print queue, while the print icon produces an unspecified error. The cups daemon is running (it has been stopped and restarted a couple of times, along with a reboot just to be sure even though I knew it likely wouldn't affect things.) The standard hplip was uninstalled, and mannually installed from the HP website, with all dependencies resolved (rather frustrating to go through five dependency installs one at a time since the manual install of hplip only mentions them one at a time. :) ) This still didn't work. The manual install was uninstalled and the standard install from the repos was reinstalled. The OS does seem to detect the printer, at least when it's on; I have turned it on, unplugged it, and plugged it back in and on at least one occasion it was automatically detected. The printer does work; I used an Ubuntu 8.04 live cd and printed a test page straight off the bat without any modifications. Using a Dell P4 2.8 Optiplex (don't quite remember the exact model number ... gotta reboot for that to see the initial screen. :) ) Any ideas? (No, I won't install Hardy Heron, even if it is LTS. :) )

I've got a Centos 4 box at work, where I noticed a pile of old kernels lying around and no longer needed. I did "rpm -qa | grep -y kernel > list" then edited the list to remove from it the newer kernels, then "yum remove `cat list`". Yum has come up with a list of 71 packages it wants to remove, even though there were only 33 kernel-related RPMs in the list. this doesn't seem right to me, as it is trying to remove a bunch of KDE files, net-snmp stuff, freeradius, etc. I show the entire list below. This certainly does NOT seem right to me. Anyone care to enlighten me? Given that it wants to do this, I'm thinking I'd be better off to just do "rpm -e `cat list`" instead. Lost my madwifi setup

I rebuilt my notebook that has the atheros card in it, and forgot to save all of my setup to get it working. I am using dkms and the madwifi rpms from rpmforge. My modprobe.conf has a line: alias wifi0 ath_pci I can ifconfig wifi0 up But the command: /usr/sbin/wpa_supplicant wpa_supplicant -dd -D madwifi -i wifi0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf fails. Now some of my old notes mention using ath0 and a line in modprobe.conf of: alias ath0 ath_pci options ath_pci autocreate=sta I think there were some iwconfig commands somewhere too. But it is all gone....... sniff. I hope someone can help? I am going through this list's archives trying to find my old messages too.

Hi All, I have been Googling my head off but cannot find a method to stream edit all the images in a directory and to resize them. I have a large number of images of up to 3GB in size that I want to put in albums on a website, but before I do this I need to resize them to a more realistic configuration. I know how to do this manually with the GIMP but it becomes tedious for more than a few images. Running CentOS 5 as virtualised under XEN as a web server. TIA ChrisG

On each node, a clustat displays that both nodes are online. I don't have anything else configured past the "Create a Cluster" page (ie. fencing, services, share resources). On the luci server, I keep getting the following error: "Unable to retrieve batch 640093076 status from hostname:11111: module scheduled for execution" Does anyone know what could be causing this. Port 11111 is open to all tcp on both nodes and I show an established connection with the node using netstat -antulp. For right now, the xend service is turned off on both nodes. Thanks in advance. Xorg "intel" driver on 965Q lockup?

Hi Folks, anyone out there successful in using the new xorg "intel" driver module on a 965Q-based motherboard with CentOS 5.2? The old "i810" and "vesa" work fine, I am looking for anyone else with experience with the new "intel" video driver in 5.2. The long of it: I have a customer's Dell Optiplex 745 (Core2 Duo 6300, 965Q chipset with integrated video) connected to a 19" NEC 1760V. Graphical installs of CentOS 5.2 completely locks the system when X starts. Text install succeeds and creates an xorg.conf using the "intel" video driver. Starting X causes complete machine lockup (no network - no ping, SSH dead) requiring a power cycle. This happens 95% of the time. I immediately assumed hardware problems but it passes memtest86 just fine and works with other video drivers. BIOS was 2.3.1 and I upgraded to latest 2.6.1 - no change. Unfortunately, a day of testing did not nail down a commonality of events to explain why the "intel" driver occasionally succeeds. Usually, it's after I've been in the BIOS menu so I suspect it is the video being in just the right state for it to succeed, but again it is not 100% reproducible. When the system locks up, no /var/log/X.0.log has been written or anything in the log files. I would like to build a kernel with sysrq key enabled to break into the kernel debugger on lockup, but I don't have the time as the hardware will be leaving soon. Switching to the "i810" or "vesa" drivers succeed 100% of the time so I have a workaround: a text install and manual edit of /etc/X11/xorg.conf to "i810". My app is old-school 2D so graphical performance is not a concern of mine. I've done searches of upstream Bugzilla, xorg, CentOS bugs, and the 'net in general and, while I find X display lockups with the "intel" driver, I do not find any complete system lockups. I'll file a bug against upstream but I'm trying to get a feel of what the scope of the problem is. I know there are folks using the "intel" driver successfully on other distros, so I'm trying to see if this is a CentOS problem, a RHEL problem, a Dell 745 problem, or just the one box I have (despite tests). Problem with mod_proxy_ajp.so

Hi, After updating httpd package it outputs an error when restarting apache. Problem was "workarounded" commenting out line 2 of /etc/httpd/modules/mod_proxy_ajp.so Starting httpd: httpd: Syntax error on line 210 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf: Syntax error on line 3 of /etc/httpd/conf.d/proxy_ajp.conf: Cannot load /etc/httpd/modules/mod_proxy_ajp.so into server: /etc/httpd/modules/mod_proxy_ajp.so: undefined symbol: proxy_module. When I issue /etc/httpd/conf.d/proxy_ajp.conf, it outputs: httpd-2.2.3-11.el5_1.centos.3 I am using Centos 5 and and httpd-2.2.3-11.el5_1.centos.3 Could you help me to find a better solution? Today I installed the newest Centos I could find and encountered the old software problem. I couldn't find any third party repositories that have TexLive to replace tetex. Ii tried the Fedora version, but it calls for a different libpoppler. LyX in Centos is aged as well. As far as I can tell, rpmfusion will provide these things, but its confiig page still says 'not ready.' I followed quite a few blind alleys trying to work this one out. Got advice? I'm looking for an RPM based distro that is conservative on the kernel updates, but not so slow on apps. I don't want Fedora b/c the lifespan is too short. PJ ps. already tried EPEL and rpmforge. Hi all I want to look at setting up a simple / cheap SAN / NAS server using normal PIV motherboard, 2GB (or even more) RAM, Core 2 Duo CPU (probably a Intel 6700 / 6750 / 6800) & some SATA HDD's (4 or 6x 320GB - 750GB). My budget is limited, so I can't afford a pre-built NAS device. Can this be done with CentOS? I've been looking FreeNAS (which is built on FreeBSD), and it look like a great project, but since the hardware support in FreeBSD is limit, I'd rather use Linux for it. Has anyone done this? Help with iptables rule for blocking UDP port 53

I would like to block all DNS queries that come from one particular ip address. I used TCPdump to verify that the queries were in fact, coming from this IP: [scarolan@server:~]$ sudo tcpdump -n udp port 53 and src 10.100.1.1 tcpdump: listening on eth0 11:12:17.162100 10.100.1.1.19233 > 10.100.1.61.domain: 14270+ A? server.domain.com. (32) (DF) Could someone help with the proper syntax for an IPtables rule to block port 53 udp traffic from this IP? I tried this rule but it doesn't work: -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -s 10.100.1.1 -m udp -p udp --dport 53 -j REJECT

Stopping a server not controled by service

Miredo is run as a server from the command line: /usr/sbin/miredo The man page says the signal SIGTERM stops the server. How do I send SIGTERM to the server? Or SIGHUP, as I want to make a change to the config file. And once I get this as I want it, how do I run it at system boot?

RADVD and default IPv6 gateway

the man page for RADVD says: radvd is the router advertisement daemon for IPv6. It listens to router solicitations and sends router advertisements as described in "Neighbor Discovery for IP Version 6 (IPv6)" (RFC 2461). With these advertise- ments hosts can automatically configure their addresses and some other parameters. They also can choose a default router based on these adver- tisements. But there is nothing I see in man radvd.conf that answers how hosts choose a default router, nor can I find anything else about this. Anyone know the answer or where to get the information???

Documentation file for ifcfg options

Sometime in the past two weeks, Some kind person pointed me to a GREAT document file that explained all those commands you find in the ifcfg-* files and the network file (and others, I believe). It was a great help to me, and now I need it again, and I did not write down the file location, nor can I find that original note. My bad, I am busy documenting everything I can now. But I really need that info. Can someone point me to file again?

This is unacceptable - Gnome 2.16.x is the /standard/ release with RHEL and CentOS distributions of Linux/Gnome. There are too many issues that can (and do) come up for the tool simply to refuse to report a bug for this reason. Comment #1 from Cosimo Cecchi (points: 22) 2008-07-14 20:29 UTC [reply] This is intentional and isn't a bug-buddy issue. Bugzilla only accepts crashers from the two most recent stable releases (e.g. now that 2.22 is the current stable, it rejects everything <= 2.19.99). If you need a specific fix, please backport it yourself in your distribution (like RHEL does I think) or just use newer releases. r8169-driver CentOS5.2

Hi all, Another FYI-mail (and just to verify that I'm not going insane here); I recently purchased an ASUS M3A78-EMH HDMI -board with a tri-core Phenom. This is a small uATX-board with all the garnish integrated motherboards are supposed to come with, and fairly well supported in CentOS 5 and other modern distros. When I installed it (~2 months ago) the NIC was not supported; Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 02) ...but Realtek provided a 2.6-kernel compatible r8168-driver; r8168-8.006.00 When the CentOS 5.2 updates were published, I saw to my happiness that the kernel-supplied r8169-driver now handled the NIC, and I had no reason to rebuild the r8168-driver to support the new kernel. Last time I rebooted, was July 2nd, to the 2.6.19-92.1.6.el5 kernel. Since then, the kernel supplied r8169-driver worked like a charm. The machine is a home file-server, serving files over NFS and SMB, and runs my torrent downloads. It also pulls CentOS updates. I would have noticed if it did not work. Today, I got around to replacing a failed disk, and after rebooting I had no network connectivity. The NIC displayed 'weird' symptoms; 10Mbps link as shown by ethtool, 100Mbps link as shown by the link-indicator on the switch, ifconfig showed no TX-packets, some RX-packets, /billions/ of dropped packets - increasing by millions every second. The kernel log showed multiple 'Link down' entries. After digging around a little, swapping switch-ports, yattayatta, I unloaded the r8169-module (rmmod) and built and loaded the Realtek-supplied r8168-module. Link up, packtes going in and out, no dropped packets, GigE link, etc etc. At this point I have no idea what actually happened. I'm thinking some weird state on the PHY of the NIC (I've seen this on the Nvidia NICs) that was not flushed due to a too short power-loss, or possibly that the r8168-driver sets some PHY-state that was not lost at the kernel-update that brought me the 'working' r8169-driver, or something similar. I'm taking suggestions, tho. Anyone else with this same board, CentOS 5.2 (x86_64) and using the r8169-driver? -S -- Simen Thoresen, Dolphin ICS Systems Administration and Wulfkit Support

Dear All, I have been using centos 5.1 for quite some time as out DNS and mail server and been workin fine i use sendmail as my mail server i did setup a backup mail server as per docs and ran th dns test from http://www.checkdns.net and it says both the mail servers are fine but i would like to know the following how would i really know if my main primary server is down all my mails r goin to my secondary mail server and when my primary is up are the mails copied back to my primary i did put down my mail server for abt 3 hrs cause cant keep it down for long but did not really see anything also are there any websites that can chec both my mail servers correctly apprecite and thnaks -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Miredo relay port question

I am bringing up a Miredo server and relay on my new iPv6 network. I have been reading the RFC and the man pages. One of the many vague points is the udp port used by the Miredo client in relay mode. Is it 'random' or is it 3545? How do I find out what it is? Plus how do I set up my server so that the Miredo server and client relay start as part of the system boot? They do now work with the service command, but just running them from the command line starts the server. My digging so far has not given me these answers....

vncviewer via gateway option question

the man page for vncviewer presents the -via gateway option to use ssh through a gateway. I understand if I want a secure vnc connection to server.foo.com I can use the command: vncviewer localhost -via server.foo.com But I have moved my SSHD services from port 22 to port n. So according to the man pages, I need an environment variable of VNC_VIA_CMD and override the default command with: /usr/bin/ssh -p 7722 -f -L "$L":"$H":"$R" "$G" sleep 20 where 7722 is the port for sshd. How do I set up this environment variable on my notebook. Would I modify my .bash_profile file, and is the format of the added line: VNC_VIA_CMD=/usr/bin/ssh -p 7722 -f -L "$L":"$H":"$R" "$G" sleep 20 ???
