OT: anything in CentOS 5.2 that uses opendns.com when browsing web?

I believe this is completely OT, but I want to be positive. I have a fully up to date CentOS 5.2 box. During the past week, when surfing with Firefox (and today, while testing with Konqueror), frequently, especially when DNS is slow, I am seeing references to opendns.com At times, I end up on opendns.com web pages, instead of at the web site I'm trying to get to. My ISP, the phone company, claims this is not coming from their end and that they are not using opendns.com. I was told they have two (2) DNS servers. I haven't changed anything in my IPCop Firewall/Router box and my belief is that this is coming from my ISP or upstream from there. . If using opendns.com is something new in CentOS 5.2, please let me know. TIA.

Sorry for such lame question but .. When i am connected to server using SSH . How can i fetch process to background and close ssh session and not kill that process? And how can i later connect to server and fetch process from background to console? All years i have been using "screen" for this. Thanks in advance! David

Power management and remote X sessions

I have about 50 CentOS 4.x/5.x stations running as thin clients. So Gnome is running on the remote machine and the station is merely acting as an X terminal. I would like to enable some power management. I think I can control the monitor's dpms features and timeouts in the xorg.conf on the stations. But if I want to have the stations themselves go into standby mode after a set amount of time, what would be the best way to accomplish that? Thanks for any info, Steve Bergman

sysctl setting reset

Hello, I have found the sysctl setting to net.ipv4.netfilter.ip_conntrack_max value reset everyday, may I know is there a way to set it permanently? I have set it to 150000, but it reset to 65535 in few hours. The running Centos is version 4 and kernel version is 2.6.9-55.0.12.ELsmp. Do I need to reboot to have it set permanently? It seems that I need to run sysctl -p to re-read the /etc/sysctl.cnf. Thanks. - Steve

CUPS and system-config-printer question

I was tasked with migrating a bunch of printer entries from one box to another. What I did is I got a list of printer names along with IP addresses and using the CUPS lpadmin -p printer-name -E -v lpd://IP_ADDR/lp I loaded them onto the new machine running RHEL 4.6. Printer tests show that it works fine. And if I use the CUPS web interface at http://localhost:631 Everything shows up. But if I launch the RH (and presumably CentOS works the same way) system-config-printer interface after adding the printers the CUPS way, nothing shows up in the RH interface. Probably not a big deal, but I have a colleague that will go nuts over this. He's attached to his interfaces, but there was no way I was going to manually enter those printers in that interface. Where do I look to make that interface "see" the CUPS-only printers? === Al

Hello, I just installed Centos 5.2 on my wife's IBM thinkpad T41 with Atheros wireless. It looks like I need to install madwifi to get the wireless to work. Our home wireless network uses WPA2 I found the EL5 rpms at atrpms, but there is no madwifi-kmdl rpms for kernel 2.6.18-92.1.6.el5. So, to get the wireless working on my home network, what's the shortest path from here? Install madwifi from source (was part the way there but discovered the rpms when I looked for the wpa_supplicant stuff)? Or, can I use one of the other madwifi-kmdl rpms? I am trying to install phpBB forum on version 5.2. It requires that I have imagemagick and gd graphics support. What rpm packages provide these. I have tried a yum install ImageMagicK with yum responding nothing todo. Is imageMagicK not available with 5.2? Any help would be greatly appreciated. -- Bo Lynch

I have been installed CENTOS 5.2 on several DELL servers and have following problems (even latest patches apply): 1. DELL 2650 can NOT boot under CENTOS 5.2 PAE mode 2. DELL R900 can NOT boot under CENTOS 5.2 PAE mode (inifinite boot loop) 3. DELL R900 with 128 GB RAM can only see 15 GB RAM under CENTOS 5.2 Xen mode Anyone know why? IS CENTOS 5.2 certify with DELL server? Does CENTOS 5.1 have similiar problem or NOT? Cleaning up smp kernels

I have used the package-cleanup utility to remove old kernel packages, but I noticed that it only removes the 'kernel' and 'kernel-devel' packages. It does not touch 'kernel-smp', 'kernel-hugemem', etc. What is the recommended method of cleaning up these other kernel packages? Should I just 'yum remove' the ones I don't need? Centos continues to fall behind in with the state of bluetooth development. Nothing new from 5.1 to 5.2. Has anyone got a more recent version working and have compile and rpm build instructions? Kernel Upgrade and RAID Card

Ok, I've got a RocketRAID 2300 and when i do the update of the kernel it breaks the raid card since the OS is on the raid card itself, i need to install the driver into the new kernel.. Whats the best way to do this? I am reading the manual from the manufacter, but i dont see anything as to a new kernel upgrade. Thanks, Ryan Nichols

Slow samba and Realtek card

RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 01) I have used a custom kernel to start with centos 5.1 as an initial installation Our customer on this kernel has experienced slow pref on samba shares (50 seconds to open a file) So I have decided to updrade to centos 5.2 that have the right detection of this card inside (2.6.18-92.1.6.el5.centos.plus) [<http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/HardwareList/CentOS5/RealTek/r1 000?action=show&redirect=HardwareList%2FCentOS5%2FRealTek%2Fr1000>] # yum update # reboot The slow samba shares didn't disapear at all ! I have corrected the trouble by doing this : # cd /usr/src/ # curl -O ftp://218.210.127.132/cn/nic/r8101-1.007.00.tar.bz2 # tar jxvf r8101-1.007.00.tar.bz2 # cd r8101-1.007.00 # make clean modules # make install # depmod -a # insmod ./src/r8101.ko # reboot After the reboot we can see that the r8101 module has been activated # dmesg | egrep -i r[0-9]{4} Finaly the slow samba share was gone ! Excluding packages from mirrored repo

The RPMForge Tools list appears to be dead, so maybe someone here can help: I am mirroring the Centos4 updates repo using mrepo. My systems are all servers and have no need of OpenOffice, so I would like to be able to exclude the 4GB (i386 & x86_64) of OpenOffice rpms when I mirror the repo. I have looked at the mrepo docs and done some Google searches, but so far, I haven't come across a way to do this. I see there is an "rsync-options" setting in mrepo.conf. Would it be safe to add an "--exclude=" option here, or is there a better way? -- Bowie

yum-updatesd not working on CentOS 5.2

Dear Srs, yum-updatesd-0.9-2.el5 appears that it's not working on freshly installed CentOS 5.2, using: # rpm -qa "yum*" yum-metadata-parser-1.1.2-2.el5 yum-updatesd-0.9-2.el5 yum-3.2.8-9.el5.centos.2.1 yum-fastestmirror-1.1.10-9.el5.centos I see some bugs ([1], [2] and [3]) in the bug tracker, and more info related to other distros like Fedora, etc.. with the same problem. yum-updatesd does not automatically update in CentOS 5.2, is there any patch for this? anyone using this daemon for Yum? How Do I Get Info About New RPMs in Major REPOs

I would like to know about new software (rpms) with a general description as they become available in the major repos. Is there a way to get an RSS feed? Currently, I run "yum --enablerepo=* list recent" in cron.daily, but it does not provide a description. I'm like a kid in a candy store with all this great free software. Best Java code for Centos 5.2s Firefox 3

OK. I just upgraded a test system from 5.1 to 5.2 and there went all of my efforts to get Java working. All those alternative commands that I lost track of what really worked.... So I need the JDK. I have that installed on my main system with some alternatives commands that I do not remember. I do remember (and can find) a thread here to help me on it, and I tried a number of different recommendations until things started working. Was it the last command or a combination of them? Anyway, so here comes the upgrade to firefox 3. On my test system, Java was working with 1.5, and now it is not. So I anticipate the same event here. I need these Java apps working, so before I upgrade, I would like to know what others have found out and recommend.

using new sysconfig file

I installed postgrey from rpmforge and wanted to use sysconfig to change options instead of overwriting the init file. However, I get a weird warning from postgrey. I have successfully changed both the primary interface and the miimon value **while the interface is up** by directly writing to the /sys/class/net/bondX/bonding/{Key} files. Changing the bonding mode is not allowed while the interface is up (probably a good thing). This is a great improvement over previous incarnations of Red Hat bonding support. I have even successfully configured two bonds on the same machine using different bonding modes for each. VERY useful! Sam

Reg. VNC server and Windows and Centos interworking

Hi all, I have a Windows XP PC and a Centos PC (Centos 4.3 release, kernel- 2.6.9-34.EL) which are in the same LAN. Currently, I am able to use VNC server on the centos to view the Windows PC, but not able to view the Centos PC from the Windows PC. This applies for even file sharing also. The samba server is running and I can view the windows network from Centos PC but in the Windows network, not able to view the Centos PC. Also not able to print from Centos to the LAN printer. NFS options on kernel parameters

Hello, I am running an NFS server/PXE on a Cent OS 5.1 server. I have defined an NFS export with "no_root_squash" option in my /etc/exports file: # # NFS Export Files # /export/images *(rw,sync,no_root_squash) ... A client PXE boots as a diskless station to the above server into a root-NFS directory underneath the above /export/images export. When the client boots; the NFS export is NOT root-Squashing - whenever I touch a file, it is created as user nobody and NOT root. I would like to NFS root-squash the root directory. I believe that I am missing to pass a parameter in my kernel - (defined in .. /pxelinux.cfg/default) .. currently my kernel parameters are: APPEND root=/dev/nfs rw nfsroot=192.1.2.5:/export/images/root-fs ip=dhcp ... would anyone be kind to provide advise on how I can mount my client so that I am ensure that the "no_root_squash" setting is enabled? thanks in advace. -- best, Vince

Is there a FC8 update repo out there?

So I need python 2.5.1, and all of its dependecies. And 2.5.1 is at least in FC8. So this leads to wanting to try to do the update right via yum, thus needing a repo. Does such a thing exist? I find a directory out there, but no repodata directory with it: http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/fedora/updates/testing/8/

pnm2ppa gone, in any repo?

I can't get my HP DeskJet 712C to print via cups. I believe the reason is that according to http://www.redhat.com/archives/epel-devel-list/2007-May/msg00002.html the pnm2ppa filter got dropped between RHEL 4 and RHEL 5, or between Fedora 6 and RHEL 5, depending on how you look at it. Foomatic still generates the pnm2ppa.xml file, but there is no pnm2ppa binary filter installed, so any print attempt ends with an error message. I don't find that any repo I have installed has picked this up for x86_64 architecture. Do I need to add a repo? Has this not been an issue for enough people that someone has made it available from a repo? Right now this has been a show-stopper on upgrading from Centos 4 to 5, as it is hard to use the workstation without a printer. Any help appreciated. Ted Miller Indiana, USA

Latest samaba updates

When I let yum install the latest samba updates, it ate my smb users file and smb.conf. Once I restored those, it gave me several selinux avc denials, one of which I can't clear up. See http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=2965 for details. Anyone else having problems like this? Dave

Iptables not blocking UDP port 53

I'm attempting to block access to port 53 from internet hosts for an internal server. This device is behind a gateway router so all traffic appears to come from source ip 10.100.1.1. Here are my (non-working) iptables rules: -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -s 10.100.1.1 -m tcp -p tcp --dport 53 -j REJECT -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -s 10.100.1.1 -m udp -p udp --dport 53 -j REJECT Further down the ruleset I have these rules to allow traffic from everyone else. If these rules are removed then nobody can make queries, because of the final default REJECT rule. -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 53 -j ACCEPT -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -m state --state NEW -m udp -p udp --dport 53 -j ACCEPT I have used tcpdump and confirmed that packets are in fact still coming across from internet hosts. Firefox 3 for CentOS 4

Hi, I'm trying to make Firefox 3 work in CentOS 4. So far I was able to do it by installing the evolution28-* rpms, which have a more recent GTK, Cairo, Pango, etc. With those libs installed and configured, Firefox 3 from mozilla.org works fine. The only thing is that it doesn't use the "Bluecurve" theme as the other applications do. I was seeing that the evolution28-* packages use themes under /usr/evolution28/share/themes instead of the default /usr/share/themes. I can copy the bluecurve theme there, but the libbluecurve.so that actually themes the widgets is missing. I tried to make it work with one from CentOS 5, but with no luck. So I'm wondering. Has anyone made those evolution28-* libs work with themes other than the ones included? Or, going through another easier route: has anyone made Firefox 3 work well on CentOS 4? How? I know Firefox 3 is supposed to be released on RHEL 4.7 so, is there already any SRPM from RedHat I could use? Thanks! Filipe

Problem with Bonding Driver

Hi, I've using linux bonding in active-backup mode to combine two pairs of GigE NICs (eth0/eth1, eth2/eth3) into two logical bonds (bond0/bond1). All is working fine. However, I would like to specify a primary interface for each bond. This means I need to specify different options to the bonding module for each bond. I have tried every conceivable incantation of options and cannot get the kernel to recognize the second set of options. Initially, my modprobe.conf looked like this: alias bond0 bonding alias bond1 bonding options bonding mode=active-backup miimon=100 max_bonds=2 What I am trying to achieve should be possible by changing modprobe.conf to this: alias bond0 bonding options bond0 -o bond0 miimon=100 mode=active-backup primary=eth0 alias bond1 bonding options bond1 -o bond1 miimon=100 mode=active-backup primary=eth2 But this results in fatal errors while bringing up the bonding interfaces. Changing to this eliminates the errors, but bond1 ignores the different options: alias bond0 bonding options bond0 -o bond0 miimon=100 mode=active-backup primary=eth0 max_bonds=1 alias bond1 bonding options bond1 -o bond1 miimon=100 mode=active-backup primary=eth2 max_bonds=1 I have tried many other combinations as well: install bond1 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install bonding -o bond1 mode=active-backup primary=eth2 Nothing works. I also came across this note in the bonding docs: "NOTE: It has been observed that some Red Hat supplied kernels are apparently unable to rename modules at load time (the "-o bond1" part). Attempts to pass that option to modprobe will produce an "Operation not permitted" error. This has been reported on some Fedora Core kernels, and has been seen on RHEL 4 as well. On kernels exhibiting this problem, it will be impossible to configure multiple bonds with differing parameters." I have seen that error as well with certain combinations of options in my modprobe.conf. Am I simply out of luck here? Does anyone know of a solution? Thanks.

Finding a python module

My colleague's system where he made these rpms also has 2.5.1. How do I determine what rpm I need to install to get this dependency?

libc-client 2007 conflict when updating

FYI for others who might encounter this. I just did a yum update (C5.1) and after a very long download of packages I get a transaction test failure: Transaction Check Error: file /usr/lib/libc-client.so.2007 from install of libc-client2007-2007b-1.el5 conflicts with file from package libc-client-2007-3 I just realized this is coming from a conflict with a custom build I made of that package so that I could install uw-imap-devel as a prereq for building an asterisk package. It looks like I can just erase those two packages and the yum update should go through.

CentOS 5.2 VMI support

I'm using VMWare Server 2 RC1 to on top of CentOS 5.2 x86_64 running a CentOS 5.2 i386 guest. I have enabled VMI in VMware, so I guess it won't let me install if VMI wasn't available in the kernel? How do I know whether VMI is supported/enabled and what performance benefits can I expect from it? I'm still not getting full hard drive speeds (only getting about 1/3 when using hdparm -t ). Russ

Hi List, We've been seeing the following error on a CentOS 5.2 x86_64 / 2.6.18-92.1.6.el5 install (from /var/log/httpd/error): *** glibc detected *** /usr/sbin/httpd: double free or corruption (! prev): 0x00002ad8ebed2d80 *** [Thu Jul 10 19:12:19 2008] [notice] child pid 5261 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) [Thu Jul 10 19:12:48 2008] [notice] child pid 12180 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) ... The following packages are installed: glibc-2.5-24 httpd-2.2.3-11.el5_1.centos.3 mysql-server-5.0.45-7.el5 mysql-5.0.45-7.el5 php-gd-5.1.6-20.el5 php-mysql-5.1.6-20.el5 php-common-5.1.6-20.el5 php-pdo-5.1.6-20.el5 php-cli-5.1.6-20.el5 php-5.1.6-20.el5 php-imap-5.1.6-20.el5 If we remove the php-pdo / php-mysql packages, then the crashes stop. But, we need those packages, so that's not a solution. Any ideas as to what might be causing this? We've tried the obvious things; the only thing that's not "vanilla" here are a few settings in /etc/php.ini (having to do with max execution time and max memory). The php code that's being run does have its share of php warn/notices: PHP Notice: Undefined index: d in [snip] on line 1699 PHP Notice: Undefined index: verbose in [snip] on line 1819 PHP Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in [snip] on line 1695 So I would not be surprised if it is tickling something out of the ordinary, but it should still not be causing a segfault! Any thoughts as to what's going on here, and how to fix it? I'm tempted to install php 5.2.6 from utterramblings repo, to see if that works around this. Thanks!

Multiple LVM snapshots

I have a Centos 5.2 fileserver running LVM2, ext3 and Samba. I want to periodically snapshot a filesystem and offer them as read only backups to my users. I'm looking for something similar to what's available on Netapp filers. I am successfully able to create snapshots using LVM. But are there any performance issues in having multiple snapshots of the same filesystem at the same time? Is there any other way i can offer filesystem snapshots to my users? redirecting when behind a firewall

Hi.. I know this isn't a centos/rhel/fedora issue... but i'm hopeful that someone might have an answer!!! thanks VVVVVVVVVV Got a bit of an issue here, that I can't seem to resolve. I have a test domain on a dynamic service (dyndns.org) the test domain is foo.gotdns.com, which i have pointing to my external cable/dsl address. Here's my issue, I would really like to be able to have the external user be able to see multiple websites which might be sitting on different physical machines/apache servers within my network. Behind the modem, I have a firewall which is set up to port-forward the traffic to a machine with my network. So, for my example, the machine is dog (192.168.1.52), and the "foo.gotdns.com" would point to the app on the machine, based on the vhost setup in the dog httpd.conf file. However, I would also like to have multiple external test sites/domains, each of which might point back to sites on different internal servers. The forwarding capability of the router only allows for all wan * (addresses) to be forwarded to a given internal machine. At the same time, the external/internal ports have to match. So i don't have the ability to do something like "forward foo.gotdns.com to machine1, and forward foo2.gotdns.com to machine2" which is exactly what i'm trying to accomplish!! I've been looking into using vhosts, and the redirect functionaility, but I can't seem to get it to work, using the external domain name. So. i'm trying to: -be able to access multiple test sites, on multiple servers from a browser external to my network -be able to access the same sites, from inside my network, using the local/internal namespace -be able to access the same sites, from inside my network, using the external namespace (testing purposes) I've looked high/low for how to accomplish this with no real luck. thanks ps. I've seen others who've been looking for similar solutions, so this would definitely help. ps. I'm able to do a redirect from one server to another, if I restrict to using internal addresses. Just can't get the external stuff to work..
