Hi all! Maybe I'm just being silly here, but I'm wondering if anybody has ever used their computer for sharing files over USB. That is, the computer pretends to be a USB mass storage device. This could be useful for connecting to media players and such that support you plugging a USB harddrive or memory stick. Surely, somebody must have thought of this before :-D regards, Bent

install from USB thumdrive

Hi all Is there a procedure to use an 8GIG thumbdrive to copy the centos 5.2 dvd contents to the thumbdrive then run isolinux (or something like it) and be able to use the thumbdrive as the install media? Seems like it should work, however my machine only has syslinux not isolinux. yum provides isolinux does not return anything. Anyway I was trying to get to a point where I can just stick a USB fab in a machine, have the fab setup with the correct kickstart and everything so it just installs. I cant modify a DVD but a fab I could put the kickstart files on and nothing to type. jerry

Drive activity every 30sec

I have a Centos installed on a Hitachi 2.5" drive that shuts off really quickly, it seems. So every 30 sec, the drive makes the sound of an access activity. I have looked trying to find what might be being updated. Swap drive usage is 0 bytes. No activity in /var/log. What might it be and can I do anything to lessen the drive access (improve battery life)?

Centos 5.2 and 2.6.18-92 Kernel backported SATA fixes?

Last year to get motherboards with the G33 chipset with SATA working with Centos I had to either use David Harbic fixes or use Fedora 8 since it had the later 2.6.25 kernel. I no longer see David's fixes available and also see in the 5.2 release notes "update SATA driver and infrastructure". Did Redhat finally incorporate fixes to full support the new G33 chipset and SATA? I have more of these G33 chipset motherboards with Q6600 cpu. Trying to decide which is the least hassle setup and long term i386 or x86_64, on either Centos 5.2 or Fedora 9?

CentOS mount doesn't support smbfs type ?

Hi, I'm trying to mount a Windows folder from a Linux box with the command: # mount -t smbfs (...) but I get the error: "mount: unknown filesystem type 'smbfs'". Firebug 1.2.0b4 for FF3

The current beta version of Firebug doesn't appear to install on Firefox 3 on CentOS 5.2, apparently because it's reporting itself as 3.0b5 rather 3.0. I tweaked the minVersion requirement in the xpi to 3.0b5 and it seems to be working fine for me now. In case anyone else is interested in testing it, my tweaked version is available here: http://www.openfusion.com.au/labs/dist/firebug-1.2.0b4-fx.xpi If it turns out to be stable we might be able to convince the firebug team to relax the minVersion requirement for us CentOS users. That's a nice trick though, I noticed after the 3rd attempt that it goes to our domain registrars nameservers, then segment faults again. Couple of CentOS 5.2 dhcp notes

1. Apparently, since I updated from 5.1 to 5.2, dhcpd no longer wants to stay running. The config is sound, and I can start it from the command-line with the "-d" flag and it serves up leases. But without the -d flag, it just silently dies... 2. Syslog contains this little snippet: dhcpd: Internet Systems Consortium DHCP Server V3.0.5-RedHat Figured you'd want to know... ;) -I

I have a newly built drive with 5.2 fresh install (that I will be cloning shortly) in my DECtop and it is failing with X the same way the upgrade from 5.1 drive did (not too supprising there). In 5.1 X worked. I could startx from init 3 and get into GNOME. Also VNC into the box and have a GNOME screen. With 5.2, I get a kernel panic. Well I guess it is a kernel panic because once I run startx from the console, my SSH session to the box from my notebook is frozen. I then move the drive and run system-config-display to get the unit to read the hwconf file and reset xorg.conf. This worked fine in 5.1. In 5.2, the system hangs. What to do? btw, i tried pci=noapci with no change. A couple other facts about this system. No accessable bios. When the system is booting (in character mode) the video frequently goes off then back on; some refresh problem. I have also seen this at times in a session on the console when I enter some commands. It would be nice to fix this. It might also tie in with the X problem. Thank you for your continued help. .

Hello, I have several systems which I recently updated with yum -y update to all the latest packages. These systems use yum-priorities and use the CentOS (priority 1) EPEL (priority 5) and rpmforge (priority 10) repositories. After the updates, dhcpd stopped working with a SIGPIPE error which occurs shortly after it attempts to fork into the background. I worked around that problem by building a new server with no additional repos, only CentOS and dhcpd works fine on that system. Since then I have found the problem, or similar problems with a few more applications. There are other things running on these systems that can successfully fork and I have been unable to figure out any pattern, other than if I don't use additional repos then it doesn't seem to break. That may be coincidental though, I haven't repeated it enough yet to be certain. Any hints or suggestions would be appreciated. Unfortunately I noticed this after deciding it was "safe" to update *all* my machines and so I'm suffering through a lot of rebuilds/restores because of this. Thanks, jbh

Help with gnome terminal

I am experiencing a problem with gnome terminal, most likely caused by something that I have done and which I need to undo. The problem is that somehow the gnome configuration has been changed so that the "Contents" menu item under "Help" in Gnome Terminal has the character "space" mapped as a keyboard accelerator. I would prefer that this be mapped to just about anything else, in fact, nothing at all would be best. I have gone to system/preferences/keyboard shortcuts/ and it indicates that "Launch Help Browser" is mapped to F1. There does not seem to be any other entry therein relating to help. CentOS 5.2 Missing Dependancy

I am trying to install perl-Digest-Perl-MD5 from rf and it is failing suggesting it needs /usr/bin/false. #yum whatprovides "/usr/bin/false" yields nothing. My CentOS 5.1 machines don't have this, and this is the same list of yum install items I always use when setting up assp. Any idea what to do? jlc

Hi, I've just installed MySQL (mysql.i386 5.0.45-7.el5) and lighty (lighttpd.i386 1.4.19-1.el5.rf) to the CentOS 5.2, but could not find mysql and lighttpd scripts in /etc/init.d. Also there is no /usr/bin/mysql_install_db. Where can I find mysql and lighttpd scripts for starting the processes in init.d? Thank you. Jim

Desktop: Evolution & Bug Buddy issues (GNOME)

Is this issue in the CentOS Bugzilla or Upstream Bugzilla? I use a fully updated CentOS 5.2 box. Frequently, when I close Evolution, I get a message from Bug Buddy, the Bug Reporting Tool, that Calendar has crashed. I do not use the Calendar Application. I use Evolution for email and contacts. Then, when I try to send the information, I get an error message: Bug Buddy has encountered an error while submitting your report to the Bugzilla server. Details of the error are included below. The fault code returned by Bugzilla is not recognized. Please report the following information to bugzilla.gnome.org manually: 999:please_try_with_newer_gnome I also have KDE installed (rarely used, but it's there) and during some very brief use, with KDE, the Evolution Calendar Application also crashed, so it is not limited to GNOME. I did not have this issue, before the recent upgrade to CentOS 5.2.

Getting something into centosplus for 5.2?

I've got a USB to serial adapter that I picked up from Radio Shack earlier this year. The updated pl2303 driver is already in the mainstream kernel as per https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=429652 but I'm not getting much traction from Red Hat as far as them updating the kernel. So every time there's an updated kernel, I have to rebuild the srpm. I figure that this is the kind of situation that -plus is meant to solve... I've already had to switch one of my boxes over to plus today given that the video4linux srpm (from atrpms) won't rebuild easily on 2.6.18-92.1.6.el5, and I'm thinking that having both on plus with everything I need in them would make it a lot easier... (There's already precedent here... I found linux-2.6.18-bz443853_powernow_null_deref.patch and linux-2.6.18-bz444759_hi_iowait.patch in the srpm...) Thanks for reading... -I

Three Identical systems - short cut to setting up the drives?

I am building three identical systems. Well they will have different host names, and with time the software setups will drift. But at install time they are identical. Is there some way, (with dd I might guess) to do a hardare level copy? All three drives are Hitachi DK23DA-40F (40Gb). Supposedly factory reconditioned (they are in sealed bags with a drive sticker stating: "Refurbished to Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Specifications"). I would want to copy the paritition table and my 3 partitions (/boot, swap, LVM (/ and /home ext3 partitions in the LVM)) and all their contents. Thing is I only have one USB drive enclosure so I would be running from the drive I want to copy from. I would hope this is faster than 2 more installs.

My daughter needs to send me a large file. It appears that it is getting through my ISP, but being rejected on my CentOS mail server. The message she's getting says A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed: anne@localhost SMTP error: 552 5.3.4 Message size exceeds fixed limit Reporting-MTA: dns; borg2.lydgate.lan I presume that this is a configurable limit, but I'm not sure where to look. Since it says MTA I'm thinking that it's probably postfix. Can someone please tell me what parameter I'm looking for? Thanks I have reams of documentation printed out. This was working in 5.1 - I am now getting errors when I try to run a flash video in seamonkey under CetnOS 5.2. PPPoE and IPv6

I am not getting my IPv6 address and prefix delegation for my ppp interface on my new gateway. ppp is working right. It is getting authenticated and getting the its IPv4 address. Shorewall is doing the forwarding and the static routes on the internal interface for IPv4 are working. But no IPv6. Hi, we have a new customer to support. They have RHEL5 not CentOS5. Is there a summary of the differences between RHEL and CentOS? We have come across differences in how yum works. There is magic involving the rhnplugin that connects us to invisible repositories not mentioned in the yum config files, interacts with the web interface via rhn.redhat.com, ... how to generate modprobe.conf

Hello, i have moved hard disk from one pc to another (some architecture). I have booted, everything working. To my surprise some modules in modprobes.conf are still there even if this PC does not have such hardware. I have tried remove modprobe.conf, but after reboot, system by it self does not generate a new one modprobe.conf. What is responsible for modprobe.conf generation, how can i revoke it to generate a modprobe.conf such as is generated after fresh install. Thanks in advance! David

Can't run a bash script from USB drive

I just tried to run a bash script (called "whose") from my USB drive and I get this: bash: /mt/bin/whose: /bin/bash: bad interpreter: Permission denied I did some googling and found that this is because my USB drive is mounted with noexec permission. When I was running FC8, this was not the case. How can I control this (i.e., allow 'exec' on my USB drive(s))? Thanks mhr

mkdep vs. makedepend

Where I work, we have an application that has been merrily running away (and being built) on FC1 (yes, you read that right). One of my assignments is to bring this up to CentOS, but on my first effort, I ran into this interesting "feature." The original build process (FC1) uses mkdep to generate the dependency files that are subsequently used by the makes to build the app. mkdep does not exist in CentOS 5.2. There is a makedepend command that operates slightly differently. Can someone enlighten me on this, particularly w.r.t. 1) how do I use makedepend to generate the same files mkdep did and is this a good idea (my impression is that it's not really that hard but also not necessarily a good idea or 2) convert all the makefiles to be makedepend friendly (seems relatively easy, though fairly extensive, but probably a better idea and also harmless should I wish/need to continue to build on the FC1 system? Probably a really basic question or two, but neither google nor the archives have a good article on this that I could find. Thanks. mhr

I've got the scripting for yum to install the apps I need, I just want to insure all the cruft is not on the system as well. Using the s-c-ks app, the smallest I have gotten is 600MB. cvs command failure on 5.2

OT: General Help in chroot build environment

I am trying to compile a module for a Realtek 8168 for thinstation. I have pulled the developer tarball and executed the script to enter its build environment. I also have the source for the module I want to compile, but when I execute #make clean modules it errors out. Reading the errors, I can see it tried to look for the kernel source of the systems actual running kernel. From within the chroot build environment, I run a #uname -r and see it displays exactly that, and not the build environments expected 2.6.21.1 that it has in the /source/kernel-2.6.21.1/linux-2.6.21.1 dir. I have ran an #export KERNELSRC=/source/kernel-2.6.21.1/linux-2.6.21.1 Any ideas on what's left to convince make it is running with the expected kernel and not my actual one? Thanks! jlc

I'm having a spot of bother with a large (900GB) partition. fdisk claims it's 900GB. I made an ext3 fs on it and df says it's only 94GB. Which is correct? Or did I do something wrong?

Anaconda ignores "cmdline" directive

Hello, Our environment: CentOS 5.2 (updated over time with "yum update", current "yum update" lists about 7 packages out of date), x86_64. Running Xen, building Xen DomU's with kickstart. We are trying to debug the %post part of the kickstart process for DomU and are hitting difficulties in accessing the output. For a start, the "cmdline" directive in the kickstart seems to be ignored and it stays in "text" (ncurses) mode. mod_python - apache crash

one of my developers is using a mod_python module called xml.dom.minidom and its causing the issue as outlined below http://www.dscpl.com.au/wiki/ModPython/Articles/ExpatCausingApacheCrash This is on CentOS 4.5 and so Apache 2.0.52-38 - I cant change the OS version but i could change the apache and or mod_python version. Hello, We are looking at ways to improve our cluster fail-over and one thing that we wonder about is the possibility of passing tcp connections from the primary server to the secondary when the primary dies. I found tcpcp (http://tcpcp.sourceforge.net/) and tcpcp2 (http://tcpcp2.sourceforge.net/) but they seem to be inactive (last release was two years ago) and requires also changes in the application level. I though that I saw somewhere an implementation of the simple idea of having the secondary tracking the connections (sort of "shadowing" the primary) and when the primary disappears it can take over everything. e.g. the following points to some interesting links: http://archive.gscept.com/2006/dev/?p=266 Has anyone here got to implement something like this? Root-filesystem remounts as read-only during 5.2 upgrade (system completely shoot)

Judging from the frequency of my messages here one could think that I'm too stupid to upgrade a workstation to 5.2 (but the servers I've tried work without problem) OK. The problem: I've tried to upgrade a 5.1-x86_64-workstation to 5.2. During the upgrade immidiatly after (according to the /var/log/messages) upgrading the two (64 & 32-bit) libgcc-packages an EXT3-error occurs and the root-partition gets remounted in read-only-mode. Consequently ALL following package upgrades throw errors saying this or that can't be done because he can't write to /etc, /usr but in the end yum says everything is OK. (Side info: /var is on a different partition, so it is still writeable) At reboot the machine wants a manual fsck which throws a lot of errors. Then the machine reboots with with a lot of error messages (basically because it can't find /lib64/libgcc_s.so.1 (nothing a symlink can't fix). After that I try to fix things by manually upgrading the libgcc-packages (otherwise yum won'T run). "rpm -q" for selected packages shows that the majority of the packages is still in 5.1-state. Trying to "yum upgrade" again fail because the machine can't find any servers (but network functionality seems OK) So I try to reboot. And now the really strange thing happens: A simple "rpm -q rpm" says that no rpm is installed. Rebuilding the rpm-database doesn't help. So I'm a bit stuck here with a machine that is in limbo. My questions: what could have been the cause for this (the machine was working OK before that). The only thing I feel a little guilty about was deinstalling the nvidia-kernel-driver and not reboot, but this can't f### up the file-system, can it? Any suggestions what I can do to get the machine into a normal state again (apart from reinstall from scratch)
