Lately, the error messages below have been showing up in the log for the past 3 days. Is something broken, or someone trying to break in or what? I'm completely clueless about this. The upgrade to 5.2 creates /etc/pam.d/system-auth.rpmnew. I see that /etc/pam.d/system-auth actually is a symlink to system-auth-ac. Is it recommended to replace that symlink with the rpmnew file? xorg and backlight

Hi all, I have found one problem after upgrading to CentOS 5.2 x86 on my HP Compaq nx7010 laptop. When I close and open lid, backlight is not turned on again. I can see my desktop, but the only thing I can do is press CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE to restart X11. Then the backlight is restored. xorg.conf is generic, created by installation process. I use ATI proprietary driver 8.28.08 (the last which support Mobility Radeon 9200). I would appreciate any hint or help. spam filtering with centos 5.2

In the past I've used a combination of spamhaus combined RBL's and Spamassassin with Mailscanner as my spam recipe, but this stopped working very well for me well over a year ago. As many of the users of the couple small/personal mail servers I run are NOT technical people, and use POP to read their mail, 'training' spamassassin is difficult at best. Once upon a time, using the Rules Du Jour scripts from the SARES project worked pretty well, but that has been shut down, and really hasn't been functional in over a year. I've just rebuilt a friends mail server with centos 5.2 (it was running FC3 or something before) and would like to setup them up with a decent anti-spam recipe that doesn't require extensive tinkering or training. does anyone have a good recipe for this? Ideally I'd like something purely RPM based that doesn't require extensive configuration and tuning. I've never setup razor before, how well does that work if the mail users aren't in a position to feed it training data?

New yum search behavior is awful/useless

I can get the description from info and the installed status from list, but the repo information is completely gone now it seems. In this state yum search is pretty useless. Am I missing something? man yum and yum.conf don't list any options to get a more useful behavior. Clamd not working

Earlier this month I reported a problem in that ClamTK couldn't virus-scan a file. This was cured by following the dev's instructions <quote> If you open up a terminal window and type "ls /var/clamav" (without quotes of course), I'm betting you'll see a variety of files and/or directories in there. If you're up for it, as root type rm /var/clamav/* -rf which will remove all the signatures. Don't worry, you'll get them back in the next step. As root, type freshclam -v And that will download all the necessary signatures again. </quote> At that point I thought all was well - until I had to reboot, when I found that it hung with a message (from memory) 'self-checking 1800'. Using Interactive boot I discovered that it came from clamd. I'm guessing that daily.cld main.cld and mirrors.dat are being sought somewhere other than /var/clamav. Maybe a symlink is required? If someone with a working clamd could advise me I'd be most grateful. For now I have had to chkconfig clamd off. Anne

How/when to file bugs on upstream bugzilla?

I've hit a bug since upgrading from 5.1 to 5.2 that involves the screen blanking when I shut the lid on a Dell Latitude D820 notebook. It doesn't come back on correctly when I open the lid, and instead crashes X. I've filed a bug on bugs.centos.org that describes the problem (#2910), and was requested to file a bug on bugzilla.redhat.com. I've filed bugs on Red Hat's system before, but always after reproducing the problem using genuine RHEL. In this case, I can't practically reload my notebook with RHEL 5.2, so I'm wondering how to report this bug to Red Hat. I'm afraid of it getting rejected outright since it's not RHEL, but on the other hand I could see where the collected information could be useful to them if the bug report is written well... Any advice on this? I didn't see anything on the CentOS wiki or FAQ as to how or when to use upstream's bug system. thanks! Greg

I run 3 servers and I upgraded them from 5.1 to 5.2 this week without even a single glitch. So now that I've been running CentOS for a couple months, I wanted to take a minute to say... Thank you to CentOS, everyone on the list for the occasional technical support (and thanks to the upstream vendor).

libgtk-x11-2.0.la missing on CentOS 5.2

Hi, I just upgrade to CentOS 5.2. I try to compile my gtk2 application using GNU autotools and found the following error: ... grep: /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.la: No such file or directory /bin/sed: can't read /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.la: No such file or directory libtool: link: `/usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.la' is not a valid libtool archive ... I check both gtk2-devel-2.10.4-20.el5 & gtk-2.10.4-20.el5, the /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.la is missing. Is this a CentOS 5.2 bug of packaging ? Or how I can ask libtool not to look for libgtk-x11-2.0.la ? Thanks a lot. Regards KC

MPEG video under Fedora 9

Could some kind soul state as briefly and clearly as possible what is required to play a .mpg video file under Fedora 9/KDE/Firefox? On my laptop I see from System Settings=>Advanced=>File Associations that I am given a choice for mpeg video files of GXine Video Player Gnome MPlayer MPlayer Movie Player Kaffeine As a sample .mpg file I've taken /usr/share/apps/k3b/extra/k3bphotosvcd.mpg . [Maybe that is a bad example; if so could some guru suggest a better one? One incidental difficulty in solving multimedia problems under Fedora is that supposed solutions rarely give a sample file on which the solution can be tested. Perhaps a selection of multimedia files for testing would be useful. Is there such a thing anywhere?] I'm not clear also if Firefox has its own, different, set of File Associations? Or will it read those set by Fedora/KDE? I understand that the Fedora developers have a religious objection to telling us how to play ungodly video files, or even telling us where we can get this information. But it would be nice if a standard godless informant could be agreed on ...

Why standard Centos 5.2 kernel does not have a module "pata_via." I have an old motherboard and IDE drive. The standard kernel does not work. Kernel include a module "pata_via" only in centosplus. It is a bug?

chkconfig update fails

My update to 5.2 fails on one machine because of this error: Transaction Check Error: file /etc/init.d from install of chkconfig-1.3.30.1-2 conflicts with file from package AcronisAgentLinux-9.5.8076-1 file /etc/init.d from install of chkconfig-1.3.30.1-2 conflicts with file from package TrueImageAgent-9.5.8076-1 Obviously, both packages created (completely unnecessarily) the /etc/init.d symlink. I'm going to report this to them, but what's the best course of action to continue now? There doesn't seem to be a "force" option for yum? Install that single file via rpm with force? Hello, i have CentOS on xen as domU, i have installed "yum groupinstall Gnome Desktop ... " . I want to access Gnome Desktoup through XDMCP protocol, but unfortunately X server will not start when there is no graphical output where to start. How can i solve this problem? And of course i have edited gdm.conf and added to [XDMCP] Enable = True. Thanks in advance! David

Automatic site selection for dowload

I would like to ask that more flexibility be built into automatically choosing sites for downloading. I have just upgraded to CentOS 5.2. When I look for a mirror, I get many choices from Taiwan. Since I am in Hong Kong this makes sense geographically but .... not in terms of bandwidth. Although Taiwan is very close, it is almost the slowest connection I can make. Some .jp sites are good but I find .sg or the US is usually best. This morning I tried to update to the new kernel (92.1.6). My system seemed to die during the download. After some investigation, I found that Yum et al is being defaulted to .tw sites. (base, updates, add ons all go to .tw.) I have now been sitting at base primary.xml.gz for over 15 minutes and am only about 50% done. Is it possible when deciding these default sites to look at actual bandwidth and not just geographical closeness? Mel

What would be the effect of changing the password field in "/etc/passwd" from "x" to "*"? I noticed I have an "/etc/passwd.rpmnew" file which changes the password of many service accounts from "x" to "*". New USB ethernet adapter

I got a new USB ethernet adapter from ebay, the ad said RealTek chipset, so I thought I would chance it. Well, my 5.2 system does not recognize the USB device. At all. What do I need to do? Hi CentOS users I am running a forum with small video clips (from YouTube and others). I convert those Macromedia Flash videos with: $ mencoder example.flv -ovc xvid -xvidencopts bitrate=1000:autoaspect -vf pp=lb -oac mp3lame -lameopts fast:preset=standard -o example.avi I use mencoder RPM from Dag Wieers 1) Its very generic command line to convert videos. What would you improve? The size is much bigger than the original FLV :( 2) Is there a real open source format what I should prefer? Can you say something about its quality? 3) Whats the most painless format for exchanging videos with Win, Mac and Linux users? cheers Simon

Hi, I am trying to integrate RHDS 8.0 with windows 2003 ads on centos 5.1 as per the centos documentation for user/group and password sync from windows ADS. I am using windows sync and Passsync . VNC vs GNOME desktop

I'm trying to use VNC to connect my home Centos box (up to date centos 5) to my Centos 4 (also up to date) at work. I have no problem connecting. The problem occurs after logging in, for every applet in the bottom Gnome panel I get an error box from which I can choose to remove the applet from the panel, or just go on. I choose to not delete but to just go on. After I get a half dozen or so of those, the desktop is fully drawn, except the bottom panel is completely empty. no desktop switcher, or anything else. I've googled and looked in centos forums and realvnc FAQs and don't find any reference to such a problem. Clues would be appreciated! Here's the text from that dialog: The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_howDesktopApplet". How to enable SHA1 passwords after migration from OpenSUSE?

Hi there! I have recently migrated my old server from OpenSUSE 10.0 to CentOS 5. Almost everything works great, except for one thing - user passwords. In the old system they were in a form: root:$2a$05$9V.P3/KV2fd0r/O8hs0gNueaidF35edj3DL6skb32qZJNpvwVHiUO:12183:0:99999:7::: and that format doesn't seem to be understood by CentOS. When I change the password I get something like: root:$1$Z0HGYkIb$fbkW0gR6c.k7rENE1NlzE0:14055:0:99999:7::: Note the encrypted password begins with $2a$... in OpenSUSE while in CentOS it starts with $1$... CentOS passwords (MD5?) are understood by OpenSUSE but OpenSUSE passwords (SHA1?) are not understood by CentOS. Is there any way around that? Perhaps get some PAM module from OpenSUSE? Or just some setting somewhere? Having to reset passwords for all my users would be a royal pain. Thanks! PaPa

Hello, is there any chance to get a headphone working under a acer extensa 5220 with CenOS 5.2 (2.6.18-92.1.6.el5) installed? Maybe by centosplus or self compiled alsa sources? # rpm -qa | grep alsa alsa-lib-1.0.14-1.rc4.el5 alsa-utils-1.0.14-3.rc4.el5 The sound works great on this notebook and the hardware is detected as 'Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller snd-hda-intel'. But the only settings alsamixer shows are 'Master' and 'PCM', nothing about Headphone or Microphone. Microphone is not so important, but a working headphone on the notebook would be great. Starting a Local CentOS Mirror

Hi all, I would like to set up a local CentOS mirror, as suggested by others on this list, to cut down on bandwidth usage, etc. I have read a couple HowTos and it seems pretty straight-forward, but I do have some questions. 1) How should I change my entries in /etc/yum.repos.d? Specifically, should I replace CentOS-Base.repo with my own .repo file? 2) Is there a way to configure yum to prefer the local repo, but use an external mirror if the local is not available? 3) What is the best practice around keeping the local repo updated? A once-a-day cron job to rsync from an external mirror? If this is the correct approach, is there a way to rsync from a "mirror list" so that updates won't fail if a particular mirror happens to be unavailable when the cron job runs? Thanks in advance for any guidance you can provide. I want to be sure I get this right!

I normally use http install to access my /centos/ver/os/i386 repo. Is there someway to get the install to include the updates in /centos/ver/updates? It seems such a waste to install rpms that you know are already fixed....

Centos 5.2 kickstart install from USB Pen failed

For a first install, I boot the machine on the CentOS first CD, I type "linux ks" at the prompt and the rest is automatic. I have already use USB pen to boot some servers that don't have CD-ROM drive and all went well with the diskboot.img of CentOS 5.1. But the diskboot.img of CentOS 5.2 seems to be unable to deal with the kickstart parameters passed by DHCP. The embedded DHCP client does not get the "filename" option value and seems to have problems with the DNS server (even if the "next-server" is correctly resolved). The installer fails at the moment of getting the kickstart file and asks me to enter a alternate location. There is a warning about the DNS server on the console, and it shows that the "filename" is set to "(null)". All went well with the 5.1 diskboot.img, with the same hardware, same DHCP configuration, and the same kickstart configuration (but with a 5.1 install tree). Anyone having the same problem ? Did I miss something ? When I execute "yum upgrade" on both CentOS 5.0 Xen DomU and CentTOS 5.1 Xen Dom0 I get: --> Finished Dependency Resolution Error: Missing Dependency: drbd >= 8.0.12 is needed by package kmod-drbd-xen "yum list drbd\*" gives: Available Packages drbd.x86_64 8.0.12-1.el5.centos extras drbd82.x86_64 8.2.6-1.el5.centos extras I searched for any mention ot drbd in my yum configuration (in case it was excluded) but didn't find anything. Hello, I have installed a new server with centos 5.2 x86_64, when i try to install a guest using the gui tool virt-manager the "new" button is disabled, so no good luck. Using virt-install on the command line, the install process begins but after retrieving the .treeinfo vmlinuz and initrd.img files, it stop with the following error: virDomainCreateLinux() failed POST operation failed: (xend.err 'Error creating domain: invalid xend config dom0-min-mem: expected int: |18') is someone having the same problem? do someone knows a workaround?. Kernel panic from install CD

I have a bunch of DecTOPs. Use the AMD Geode chip. Yesterday I upgraded one of them, and got the dreaded Kernel panic. Something about powernowk8. I could boot up with the old kernel, though. I know I have to put in a bug report on this, will do shortly, but first wanted to try a fresh install on another DecTOP. At the prompt, I specified: linux askmethod After it loaded the kernel, it died with the same Kernel panic. This is bad. Very bad. If they fix the kernel (when, please?), I will need to make a new install CD (how?). Yes, I can put the drive in another system, do the install, move the drive, then run system-config-display, but I was hoping that 5.2 fixed the install problems i was having on these DecTOPs with 5.1....
