Desktop Effects -- questions/issues

Hi! I finally tried enabling the desktop effects yesterday. I'm using an old Nvidia card (GeForce 4 MX440) with, of course, Nvidia's drivers. this is on a fully updated Centos 5 system. Enabling from the gnome menu doesn't exactly work compltely, one needs to google around a bit to find out the remaining magic incantations to make it fully work. So, I've done that and it's working. Issues: 1. I notice that the text in the bar at the top of each window appears to be a different font, and it is outlined in black. Is there any way to tweak that setting? 2. If I have a window that is slid partially off the edge of an individual desktop it now oveerlaps the edge of the one "next" to it, when it never did before. Not sure if I like that or not, is there any way to change that behavior should I decide I don't like it? 3. I have (and always have had) the panel settings set to "autohide". I now notice that it sometimes does not hide itself until I explicitly click in an empty part of the panel, then somewhere else on the desktop. Anyone know if there's a way to resovle this? Question: Should I decide I want to revert to the way it was before I enabled these effects, how would I go about that? there is no "disable" button on the gnome menu, only the "enable" button. I know how to un-do the changes I made manually in the xorg.conf file, but no idea how to undo whatever it is that the "enable desktop effects" button does. Clues would be appreciated. Need GLIBCXX-3.4.9 for /usr/lib64/libstdc++

I am trying to compile an application on a CentOS 5.0 64-bit machine that gives me the error: /usr/local/bin/myprog: /usr/lib64/libstdc++: version `GLIBXX.3.4.9' not found (required by /usr/local/bin/myprog) I have gcc 4.2.3. I've performed a yum install compat-* and glibc* What am I missing? Thanks. Scott

remote access info please

Hi ya'll, I built a new CentOS 5.1 server for a client, housing a Lotus Notes / Domino server, and various other virtualized IBM software server guests, and soon will have to physically move that server to another distant location. My question is that I will need secure access to those servers via X, not just the C/L terminal. What do you recommend for a good secure CentOS program which would do this. Would also want to access via a high port, but I am sure just about any program will allow this to be manually configured. Thanks for your help and input. -- Regards, Gary

linux rescue on usb thumbdrive

I believe the same issue I see with running "linux rescue" on a USB drive is the same issue I am having why the thumb drive wont boot. When installing I have to use expert mode I just cant install directly as the USB disk is not seen. What happens extra in expert mode? some delay somewhere??? When doing a linux rescue it looks for existing installations and finds none. This is because the USB disk is not yet ready. If I do "fdisk -l /dev/sda" from the shell given it is not there, wait a couple second do it again and NOW the fdisk -l /dev/sda shows the device... Its just like when you stick a USB disk in a working machine. takes a few second to be mount-able. So the big question is how do I get the USB disk to be recognized a FEW second later? The boot is happening tooo fast and I think and my USB disk is not yet ready. That is why it cant find my ext3 file system on the disk. I am so close to getting this thing running. Any suggestion/comments on what I am finding and how to get past it? Thanks guys. jerry

YUM and installing older versions of software.

How does one specify a particular version of a software package to yum to install? Is this even possible? What happens to superceded pacjkages in repos? Are they simple removed/discarded? yum install package-X.Y.Z-A.el5 ??? The reason I ask is if a yum update goes awry for some reason then how does one revert to the previous (working) version? struggling with simple webdav

Normally I use authzldap to authenticate LDAP users but in this case, I have a client that wants non-LDAP users to be able to use DAV. New to Centos, and linux in general

I've installed DSL linux -- no problem My expertise is in the HP3000 (non windows, non unix) environment. When I boot from Centos CD#1 I get a Panic error..... I'm thinking hardware is the issue so I try a different machine, same thing. I've tried 'linux rescue', 'linux mem=256' still the same error, which is mostly unreadable to me because most all the messages roll off the top of the screen. At the boot: install prompt for 4.6 there is a i586 option. there is also an expert option. If you use expert mode can you also specify i586 somehow? Jerry

centos 5.1 install failure

Greetings. I am attempting to install 5.1 x86_64, but it is dumping out during the post-install section. I was able to send a debug to a remote system. I've never looked through an install debug log before, but everything seems to be in order until after the "tar" install, at which point I get the following error: error: db4 error(-30977) from dbcursor->c_put: DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error, run database recovery This db4 error runs until the system finally notices a crash. This box ran centos 4.x for over a year without a problem. Supermicro motherboard Intel 3.2 gig Xeon procs, x2 8 gigs memory 3ware 9550 12port SATA 3ware 8006 2 port SATA No other pci cards. I also ran memtest with no errors. It ran for approx. 15 hours. I tried to install with the 5.0 discs as well, but that install failed as well. I turned of ACPI in the bios after the second failure. This didn't help. I have been using the graphical install. I am about to try the text-based install. Any thoughts? Thanks, Monty

Environment: - CentOS 5.1, - Apache 2.2.3 - php 5.1.6 - phpMyAdmin 2.11.6 - MySQL 5.0.22 Brand new system, brand new installation of all the above products. All looks well, but when I try to connect to phpMyAdmin, I get an error: "Forbidden: You don't have permission to access /phpMyAdmin/ on this server". I'll forgo all the paths I followed trying to get this to work and cut to the "solution": I renamed the phpMyAdmin directory to pma, copied all files in the pma directory to a new phpMyAdmin (FWIIW, using 'cp -pr'), and voilà, problem vanished. (I cannot explain why I even tried that.) My first idea was that maybe the copy somehow resolved some issue at the directory level, but when I output an 'ls -laR' of the two directories to two files, 'diff' shows both files to be identical (apart from the timestamps on . and .. directories). The pma and phpMyAdmin directories reside in the same documentroot, have the same ownership, and the same permissions. This must be about the weirdest experience in my professional career. If anyone can shed a light on this, it'd be most welcome. I still have the original (malfunctioning) directory on the system to bounce ideas off if anyone has any inspiration (system will go live this weekend). control outgoing IP address?

I'd like to consolidate some services that have been assigned by IP (dns, syslog etc.) onto one machine by giving it IP aliases to accept connections for the old addresses until all the references are fixed. Kernel/harware question

Hello, I have an IBM Netvista and since kernel 2.6.9-34.0.2, I have not been able to upgrade to the latest kernel. If I do, in about 8 hours, the system becomes sluggish almost unresponsive. Currently I am running 4.6 but with the kernel mentioned above. I think I may have figured out the problem. It seems when I reboot with the new kernel, kudzu runs and wants to configure a different driver for this card, Intel Pro/100. If it does, it will cause the problem I mentioned. If I don't let it update the driver, it seems to be fine. So my question is how can I force it to use the driver from kernel 2.6.9-34.0.2? Is it something I need to add to grub.conf?? If so, what? TIA

Single crontab entry for every 15 minutes beginning & ending on the hour

We have a cron job that needs to run every 15 minutes throughout business hours. The first run is at 8:00, the last run is at 17:00. Is it possible to specify this time range in a single line? */15 8-17 * * 1-5 will run 8:00 - 17:45. That's not what I want. Likewise */15 8-16 * * 1-5 will have the last run at 16:45, not 17:00 This is more of a brainteaser than a real problem. I can easily configure the job with multiple entries, but I'm a little obsessive-compulsive so I want to try to do it with one entry. # rpm -qa vixie-cron vixie-cron-4.1-49.EL4 -- Jeff

using windows ad accounts for centos 5

Hi I read and used the article http://blog.wazollc.com/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=2 to authenticate my ad accounts when logging on to cent 5...however, once I edit the nsswitch.conf file, I can't even log on as root or any local users anymore. Kinit seems to initialize fine doing a kinit username(a)MYDOMAIN.COM , however doing a getent passwd adusername ....it just sits there in the shell and does nothing. I actually had to put all files back to where they were before the change to even be able to login locally or use sudo. I followed the steps line by line on this article but get stuck everytime....anyone has an idea or a better documented way of achieving what I am trying to do , please let me know. Thanks, Isaac

Unless I've missed something (which is possible) there hasn't been any "public progress announcements" regarding rpmfusion in the past several weeks. Is there anything new to report? custom kernel cant find label /

Hi all, I installed centos 4.6 on a USB thumbdrive. It installed and booted after install. I then put a custom kernel on, build it as I should, on rebooting and selecting my kernel to load from grub I it starts up and all and the last error I get is: label / not found. What went wrong? Jerry

ClamAV help needed

ClamAV is installed on my CentOS box. I edited the conf file and assumed all is well. Clearly it isn't. Every day I see in logwatch that my signatures are updated, and the database notified, but if I try to scan a file manually it tells me that my signatures are 55 days old. I tried looking at a how-to, in the hope of identifying the problem, but it is hopelessly out of date, and I reached the stage where it seemed that following it any further risked my installation. Can someone please give me a quick run-down of the things I should check. Clearly freshclam is running, but that's about all I know for certain. Thanks Anne

USB Wireless device for CentOS?

KS Package Selection

My ks file has just Base which obviously pulls in a few other things I don't want like dialup support etc. System-config-kickstart doesn't let you specifically drill down what options are in each group. Speaking of USB devices (recent thread on wireless USB), I need at least 4 USB ethernet dongles, cheap. Trying to find out if any of them will work for Centos. One is listed as using RealTek chipset, but not which one. I asked the sellers about chipsets to find out about Linux support and the first one listed the seller just restated it works for Windows.... Any help would be appreciated. I need these for test systems so best is it works and is cheap....

Apache jserv monitoring?

In our environment we have many legacy application servers running apache/jserv. There is a web server front end, then a couple of load-balanced java servers on the backside. One of the problems we are faced with is hung or stuck jvms. I have looked at the java process with the ps command, and there are many times when URL(s) do not respond, yet the java looks healthy, at least from the OS point of view. The usual cure for this situation is to restart the JVM, then the URLs come right back up. Are any of you aware of tools for monitoring apache jserv, either from localhost or by connecting to port 8008 over the network? I really want to find out if there is a way to detect a "sick" JVM other than getting a bunch of down URL alerts on my phone.

Virtual Box

Has anyone else tried and successfully installed CentOS 5.1 into the latest (1.62) Virtual Box in Windows XP Pro? I can get Ubuntu and EasyS to install fine but CentOS and Fedora so far fail to install even after several attempts. With CentOS 5.1 it keeps saying not enough disk space even if I allocate 32 GB and 64 GB of virtual space. I have at least 40+ GB free on the hard drive. No virus found in this outgoing message. I may be getting a couple of these for traveling servers (smaller than a PICO-ITX system!). Info is available for putting Ubuntu on it (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OQO) but what about Centos? Any help out there?

I'm trialing the use of lighttpd/php to improve performance for a web services cluster. My initial testing on Fedora Core 8 was very positive, but it seems that CentOS 4 doesn't have a package that installs the /usr/bin/php-cli file as available in Fedora Core 8? In FC8, it's found in a package called "php-cli". we are tried setup CENTOS 4.6 with Informix Dynamic server version 10 UC8 on DELL 6800. The problem we have is while doing bdatabase backup (ontape), we have error happen. I guess the error come from "semaphoe". server semaphore are: # sysctl -a|grep sem kernel.sem = 250 32000 128 128 # sysctl -a|grep shm vm.hugetlb_shm_group = 0 kernel.shmmni = 4096 kernel.shmall = 4194304 kernel.shmmax = 2147483648 Does anyone has ideal what semaphore should setup in Informix? The computer is on a local switch together with an older computer, which in turn communicates well at 25 MB/s with all the rest of the world. At Dell's they propose a hardware support, however not for that model. Nevertheless they support officially CentOS. That's why I asked whether anyone had encoutered the same problem already, and could perhaps provide a solution. Yours, Peter I would recommend looking at your network speed/duplex negotiation with your switch. I suspect your switch may be full duplex and your network card half or vice versa. Try forcing your network card to various speed/duplex settings (and your switch if it is a decent managed unit) and re-try your testing. This is the most common cause of network performance issues. cheers

booting usb stick

Hi all, I have been trying to get a usb stick 8G to boot centos. I am as far a it boots and hangs at "Switching to new root". I take the same USB stick and put it another PC and it boots fine. What might I look for as to why the machine hangs at switching to new root? Of course the machines are different. The one that does not boot is an ebox 2300sx and the one that does boot is an amd 4800+ with all disks unplugged except the USB stick. I am sooooo close. Jerry

I did not write this because the same happens with an additional, elder 3Com card and Fedora 9, with a 2.6.25 kernel. Monitor and SATA disk work fine. Dear All, During CentOS Boot-Up user can See all of the standard messages within this front-end by clicking on the 'Show Details' link and hide the standard messages within this front-end by clicking on the 'Hide Details' link. Previously when i click the "Show Details" Menu it will display the system boot-up standard messages.I do not know what will happen and After some time when i click the "Show Details" Menu it will not display the system boot-up standard messages and it will display the following message alone "Enabling Swap Space OK" on clicking "Show Details" Menu I tried to google-out and i can't find out the show details and hide details configuration files I am not sure why this is happening. Dear all, on a brand new DELL computer CentOS 5.1 installs well, but the internet connection is extremely slow (8 kB/s, indeed kiloBytes !). Did anyone find a solution to that problem ? mdadm on reboot
