Semaphore setup on database???

we are tried setup CENTOS 4.6 with Informix Dynamic server version 10 UC8 on DELL 6800. The problem we have is while doing bdatabase backup (ontape), we have error happen. I guess the error come from "semaphoe". server semaphore are: # sysctl -a|grep sem kernel.sem = 250 32000 128 128 # sysctl -a|grep shm vm.hugetlb_shm_group = 0 kernel.shmmni = 4096 kernel.shmall = 4194304 kernel.shmmax = 2147483648 Does anyone has ideal what semaphore should setup in Informix? The computer is on a local switch together with an older computer, which in turn communicates well at 25 MB/s with all the rest of the world. At Dell's they propose a hardware support, however not for that model. Nevertheless they support officially CentOS. That's why I asked whether anyone had encoutered the same problem already, and could perhaps provide a solution. Yours, Peter I would recommend looking at your network speed/duplex negotiation with your switch. I suspect your switch may be full duplex and your network card half or vice versa. Try forcing your network card to various speed/duplex settings (and your switch if it is a decent managed unit) and re-try your testing. This is the most common cause of network performance issues. cheers

booting usb stick

Hi all, I have been trying to get a usb stick 8G to boot centos. I am as far a it boots and hangs at "Switching to new root". I take the same USB stick and put it another PC and it boots fine. What might I look for as to why the machine hangs at switching to new root? Of course the machines are different. The one that does not boot is an ebox 2300sx and the one that does boot is an amd 4800+ with all disks unplugged except the USB stick. I am sooooo close. Jerry

Dear Hendrik, Dag and Wealid, thank you for the replies; to be more specific, here is some more info: its a DELL Optiplex 755, with a 2 Gb/s onboard card. I did not write this because the same happens with an additional, elder 3Com card and Fedora 9, with a 2.6.25 kernel. Monitor and SATA disk work fine. CentOS Boot-Up front-end 'Show Details' Menu will not display the standard messages

Dear All, During CentOS Boot-Up user can See all of the standard messages within this front-end by clicking on the 'Show Details' link and hide the standard messages within this front-end by clicking on the 'Hide Details' link. Previously when i click the "Show Details" Menu it will display the system boot-up standard messages.I do not know what will happen and After some time when i click the "Show Details" Menu it will not display the system boot-up standard messages and it will display the following message alone "Enabling Swap Space OK" on clicking "Show Details" Menu I tried to google-out and i can't find out the show details and hide details configuration files I am not sure why this is happening. extremely slow network connection

Dear all, on a brand new DELL computer CentOS 5.1 installs well, but the internet connection is extremely slow (8 kB/s, indeed kiloBytes !). Did anyone find a solution to that problem ? I have done this before, and found it to be a bit of a pain to make UNIX UID/GIDs, to ADS SID mappings the same on multiple machines. I had found a utility called wbuser , http://www.occam.com/tools/README.wbuser-1.1 , that could delete and add the UID to SID mappings but did not work for GID to SID mappings. Fortunately, I found that I could just copy the Trivial Data Base (TDB) file called winbind_idmap.tdb from one machine to all the others, and then start the samba smb and winbind daemons afterwards. Since all the machines have the same mappings, they can share nfs mounts and the file and directory ownerships are consistent across the multiple machines. Rodney Mercer

CUPS problem

Hello, I am running centOS 4.3 and my cups print server suddenly stopped working, now when i reboot the server it hangs a time starting the cups service and when finally the system boots up, everything remains in the queue but not printing at all. Strange thing is all the print jobs appears owned by the user nobody. anytime i try to cancel a job i cant because it tell me i have no rights to do it despite im logged as root. Via webmin i got the error: lprm: unable to lprm jobs I will appreciate any comment or tip. Regards, --Ivan.

I have download 9 iso files, 3 torrent files and 4 txt files from http://mirror.averse.net/centos/5.1/isos/i386/ Please tell me which files I need to burn? 3. getting device to boot from thumb drive

I have created a custom kernel as I needed to add floating point emulation to the kernel. I used the command below to create my initrd: mkinitrd --preload=ohci-hcd --preload=uhci-hcd --preload=ehci-hcd --preload=ext3 --preload=jbd --preload=scsi_mod --preload=sd_mod --preload=ata_piix --preload=libata /boot/initrd-2.6.9-67.ELmsgnet.img 2.6.9-67.ELmsgnet When I copy my vmlinuz and initrd to my ext partition of my thumbdrive I get the initial grub screen, centos starts booting, kernel starts uncompressing, I get the following: Unable to locate RDSP RedHat nash version 4.2.1.13 starting sda: assuming drive cache: write through sda: assuming drive cache: write through Then it just sits there. Nothing else happens. What might else I need to get this thumb drive booting? I compiled the kernel in i386 math emulation is the only items I changed. I started with i586. Thanks, Jerry

iptables starting while disabled

I have a xen machine that has iptables turned off, and after a reboot it started behaving badly during times when network IO rose to anything other than almost nil. Since I know iptables makes xen unstable without some additional config and since its isolated I just have is disabled. As a result it was the last place I looked and spent the better half of the day chasing my tail. Somehow it gets turned on after a reboot, how can I deduce what is activating it? Thanks! jlc

enabling maildir @ cli

Hi all, I'm following a how-to for ISPConfig using CentOS5.1 and have run into the following instruction: ----- Dovecot uses Maildir format (not mbox), so if you install ISPConfig on the server, please make sure you enable Maildir under Management -> Server -> Settings -> Email. TCP offload cards in linux

Anyone have experience with any? I've been having a real hard time finding info on any cards that actually support this under linux. (most of the cards work but I don't see drivers that actually offload the TCP stack) I have seen some comments where kernel developers don't like the idea as well. I'm running CentOS 4.6 64-bit on a dual proc quad core system with 8GB memory. I have a situation where I'm trying to make the most of my hardware here, a web application that serves up hundreds of tiny requests per second(each taking typically sub 100ms to complete). With my load balancer in it's "normal" mode I can pump about 1000 requests a second through the system, before exhausting the TCP stack on the server(all ~65k sockets in use). CPU usage tops out at about 75%. The "normal" mode terminates idle connections forcefully after 25 seconds. If I tell my load balancer to terminate idle connections *immediately* instead of waiting 25 seconds, I get similar CPU usage but transactions per second drop by about 30-33%. During my tests I've also gotten 4 kernel panics, the last two I have captured and they are virtually identical, with the exception of one time it panic's on the java process, another time it panics on the swapper process. Both times the load balancer was configured to terminate connections faster than 25 seconds. I've done several searches and can't find anything remotely related to the below panic. What might I do Linux-wise to create a "system" that looked at multiple gateways and then assigned (via DHCP) the gateway that was the least congested? Anyone have any good suggestions in this department? (I am planning on having a temporary wireless mesh with several satellite uplinks, and I would like to forward requests to whichever uplink is the least utilized)

I re-installed glibc-2.3.4-2.39.src.rpm on CentOS 4.6, and tried to use pthread_setschedprio() API in glibc library, but it fails. Here is my system information. mdmonitor not triggering program on fail events

Hi, Can anyone help me with this since I want to get it done "the correct way" I'm trying to make mdmonitor to execute a program when it detects a fail event automatically. Currently, from what I see, init is calling mdmonitor with these options mdadm --monitor --scan -f (note that the --program is not there) and this is in my /etc/mdadm.conf MAILADDR root PROGRAM /root/program_2_run.sh short of hacking the mdmonitor script to hardcode the program there, is there an alternate, more elegant way? Problems installing 5.1 on a Tyan Thunder HEsl with a SCSI controller

Hi, I'm trying to install 5.1 using the onboard LSI Symbios 53C1010, and I'm running into some trouble. When the computer first boots, the SCSI BIOS sees the three HDDs, but when I go to install, the installer hangs for a while at inserting the sym53c8xx driver and if I go over to the screen on F4 it shows that it is trying to scan the SCSI bus and is resetting all of the IDs. Once that is done, it moves on the the actual installer, but does not see any drives. I'm kind of at a loss at the moment. I feel like there would be a kernel boot option that I could give the installer, but I don't know what that would be. I know the SCSI IDs of the three HDDs (and the controller), is there a way to say "just use these IDs and move along"? I'm currently downloading a Fedora 9 CD (I don't have a spare DVDROM) to see if a newer kernel will help, as going back down to CentOS 5.0 didn't (I had it at hand). Thanks for any help! --Tim

I have a Tyan S3870 (K855A) motherboard which I would like to perform a burn in test with. lm_sensors needs a kernel module compiled to be support this motherboard's sensors. General CentOS 5.1 (or Gnome) instability?

I've been a big fan of CentOS for a while, and didn't have many issues with CentOS 4.X over the past few years. However, since moving to CentOS 5.1 a few weeks ago, I have received more problem reports from my users than in the last year and a half on CentOS 4.X. I've previously reported the problem with gnome-terminal crashing (and since there is a single gnome-terminal process by default all your terminal windows disappear which makes this really painful), and now I'm getting multiple reports of Gnome applets suddenly quitting. Sometimes this includes the entire screen "flashing" (probably a side effect of the "Show Desktop" applet exiting). I've also had reports of some third party tools like SlickEdit misbehaving and/or crashing on CentOS 5.1. Don't get me wrong; I'm not really complaining about CentOS. I really appreciate what the CentOS team does. I am just wondering if anyone else has seen these issues. If it was just one or two users, I would suspect the hardware or some configuration issues. But these issues started cropping up after I upgraded our existing systems to CentOS 5.1. The "upgrade" was a complete reinstall via a kickstart script (I reformatted all partitions/LVs except for one), and all systems are configured identically. BTW, I'm using CentOS for our desktops as well as our servers, and all these problems are really confined to the desktop systems. Almost everyone uses the default Gnome desktop. So, does anyone else have the perception that CentOS 5.X (particularly Gnome) is a little less stable than CentOS 4.X or is it just me? Alfred

LDAP syncrepl incompatibility between CentOS 4.x and 5.x

All, After many hours of research I have found there is a incompatibility between OpenLDAP V2.3.x and V2.2.x, or atleast between V2.3.27 the current version on CentOS V5 and V2.2.13 the current version on CentOS V4. The syncrepl feature of OpenLDAP, to keep multiple slapd servers sync'd, was working between CentOS 4 and 5 at one time, as that is how I populated the "slave" servers. I've found references indicating protocol changes and incompatibilities between these versions and indeed looking at detailed debugging logs I can see the protocol falling apart between the two versions. Has anyone else seen this issue? Is anyone aware of a fix in the pipeline or a work around? Thanks in advance, Brett

Named.conf has 3 views, localhost_resolver -> localhost, internal -> localnets, and external -> !localnets; !localhost. I have a management workstation in 192.168.0.0/24 that is connecting and receiving the following debug: client 192.168.0.44#2188: no matching view in class 'IN' I don't get it? Obvioulsy if I add all to the external view, it works. How is the failing? Thanks! jlc

Hi all, I am running centos 5.1 and I wish to change the domain name and dnsdomainname of my PC. currently the settings are-- $ hostname sipx.com $ hostname --fqdn sipx.com $ domainname (none) $ dnsdomainname com I have searched in the net for tips but everywhere only the hostname change is provided. I need to change/set the domain name and the dnsdomain name on my pc to sipx.com and this should be a permanent one across system reboots. Please let me know how to do this. The domain name settings are required for a networking/ SIP telephony applications that I am running but it is internally in the LAN, so I think the name sipx.com if chosen as my pc's domain name will not cause any conflict with the external domain names in the Internet. Hello, on a INN mailinglist i have found , that in order to use INN over SSL i need to call another instance of nnrpd like this : su news -c '/usr/local/news/bin/nnrpd -D -c /usr/local/news/etc/readers-ssl.conf -p 563 -S' I am using INN from official centos 5.1 rpm . My question is, where to init scripts /etc/init.d/inn or somewhere else put such a line to have INN listening on 563 for SSL connections? Thanks in advance! David

syncrepl in OpenLDAP 2.3.x (CentOS 5) and updating on a replica

Hi, I have a setup with two CentOS 5 machines running OpenLDAP 2.3.x, right now the primary uses slurpd to send the updates to the second server, and the second server is using "updatedn" to allow updates (from what I understand! I'm no OpenLDAP guru here.) Clients are using pam_ldap and nss_ldap to get the users and authenticate them in LDAP. Right now hosts query only the primary LDAP server, that is the address set on the "host" variable of /etc/ldap.conf. Changing password with "passwd" works fine, and the password is correctly replicated to the secondary server. Now, first thing, I wanted to load balance between the two servers. The way I did it was to register a Round-Robin DNS record, with one A entry for each server IP, and I used that entry in the "host" variable of /etc/ldap.conf. Everything worked. Queries going each time to a different server. I was expecting to have problems changing passwords, but amazingly it worked. Apparently when a password change request goes to the second server, that server will do a query on the first server to do the password change, and then (through slurpd) the change gets replicated on the second one. Everything great. Now, I was reading that syncrepl is superior to slurpd, and that syncrepl is the preferred method of replication. I actually saw that it's true when I saw that it actually replicated the master without having to stop it and copy the dbs (which is necessary with slurpd.) I even saw that in OpenLDAP 2.4.x slurpd is deprecated/discontinued and only syncrepl is supported. So I'm trying to migrate from slurpd to syncrepl. And so far everything is working fine in my test environments. This is what I have configured on the master: overlay syncprov syncprov-checkpoint 1 10 syncprov-sessionlog 100 And on the slave: syncrepl rid=1 provider=ldap://ldap1.mydomain.com type=refreshAndPersist searchbase="dc=mydomain,dc=com" schemachecking=off bindmethod=simple binddn="cn=Manager,dc=mydomain,dc=com" credentials=xxxxxxxxxxx updateref ldap://ldap1.mydomain.com/ It works with queries, and when I do an update on the master, it replicates fine to the slave. But when I try to do some change on the slave, that's what I get: $ ldapdelete -H ldap://ldap2.mydomain.com/ -D cn=Manager,dc=mydomain,dc=com \ -w XXXXXXX -x uid=usertodelete,ou=Users,dc=mydomain,dc=com ldap_delete: Referral (10) referrals: ldap://ldap1.mydomain.com/uid=usertodelete,ou=Users,dc=mydomain,dc=com I would like to have something closer to what happens when using slurpd, which seems to be more transparent to clients. I tried to set "updatedn" but slapd complained that it is supported when using slurpd. I also tried to start configuring overlay on the slave and syncrepl on the master, but when I do that I can't run updates on either side, both of them end up being read-only. I read that on OpenLDAP 2.4.x Administration Guide, on the section about multi-master replication, but I then saw that multi-master replication is supposed to work only on 2.4.x, and not on 2.3.x, so that's apparently not an option. So I ask: is there a way to configure OpenLDAP so that the slave (running syncrepl) can send updates to the master when receives from a client? Or (not as good but still an option): If I use "updateref" to send Referral, how can I make sure the tools (ldapdelete, ldapmodify, ldapadd, ...) actually *follow* the referral (I looked for that in man pages and didn't find any obvious options for that)? And more important, will pam_ldap and nss_ldap follow those referrals when changing the password? Do I have to set something on /etc/ldap.conf for that? Upgrade to 2.4.x is something I would like to avoid, since I would rather stick with what is supported by CentOS 5. Long term, I'm planning to replace all this infrastructure to FreeIPA (http://www.freeipa.org/) which is supposed to be a more robust product, but that is going to take a while, so I'm trying to at least do the best I can with what I have now. Hi Harry, Has much has I like Centos and RH for big sophisticated setup, it would not be my first choice for your project. For 25 systems and if you want this done without spending to much time, Clarkconnect would by my first choice for server side OS (#2 would be SME). For me CentOS x64 is #1 choice for enterprise (+500 users with Terabytes of storage ) sever solution. If you have little experience configuring a RH server, get ready to spend lots of time getting everything going as nicely as Clarkconnect does it. Not seeing all memory in CentOS 5.1 x86_64

I'm running CentOS 5.1 with all updates, and the xen kernel. For some reason the OS is not seeing the full amount of ram. #uname -a Linux CentOS-VM-A 2.6.18-53.1.21.el5xen #1 SMP Tue May 20 10:03:27 EDT 2008 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux # free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 6104064 3445136 2658928 0 1412236 1515032 -/+ buffers/cache: 517868 5586196 Swap: 2031608 0 2031608 On another box with identical hardware, I see # free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 5038080 1818980 3219100 0 145208 1148608 -/+ buffers/cache: 525164 4512916 Swap: 2031608 152 2031456 Both of these boxes have 8GB of ram. Is there a reason I'm not seeing all of it? Russ

Hi list, Best Buy currently has an eMachine on sale for less than $300.00 without monitor. I didn't see any recent complaints on www.consumeraffairs.com. I didn't take the time to do a thourgh search so may have missed some. Red Hat hardware list does not have one eMachine listed. I went to eMachine's home page and found the following: AMD Athlon™ BE-2350 dual-core processor NVIDIA® GeForce® 6100 2048MB DDR2 dual-channel 320GB 7200rpm SATA II 16x DVD±R/RW SuperMulti drive High-performance 15-in-1 digital media card reader 6-channel (5.1) high-definition audio They do not list the manufacturer/model of the media card reader and audio.
