Hi Is there any way to re-export an nfs mounted directory? Hello , i want all my log messages from python to have in /var/log/python Now they are in /var/log/messages: Jun 9 12:10:51 sx1 kernel: klogd 1.4.1, log source = /proc/kmsg started. Jun 9 12:11:01 sx1 python: MM_MEMBERS [it] Nothing to do. Jun 9 12:11:02 sx1 python: MM_MEMBERS [research] Nothing to do. Jun 9 12:12:01 sx1 python: MM_MEMBERS [it] Nothing to do. Jun 9 12:12:01 sx1 python: MM_MEMBERS [research] Nothing to do. So i have added to the end of the syslog.conf # Python python.* /var/log/python and restarted syslog, then i have created /var/log/python and for sure addedd u+rw, g +rw, o+rw permissions But, nothing, /var/log/python is empty What am i doing wrong? Change from gnome to KDE desktop

What's the best way to do this? Remove the yum group gnome (does this set default init to 3?), install the yum group KDE and then set default init to 5 again (as I assume installing KDE not during the setup will not automatically set the system to start the gui?). You don't mention it but I assume you are running on Fiber Channel not iSCSI? I am running GFS using CentOS 5.1 from two servers using iSCSI. I have Device Mapper Multipath setup so that makes my performance characteristics a little different but I have tuned the servers with the following commands: gfs_tool settune <mountpoint> demotes_secs 600 gfs_tool settune <mountpoint> scand_secs 10 gfs_tool settune <mountpoint> statfs_slots 128 The first two I have set until 5.2 drops which will contain an additional GFS tuning parameter, glock_purge. Update 5 of CentOS 4 may already have the glock_purge parameter available. Run the command 'gfs_tool gettune <mountpoint>' and see if glock_purge is listed. It should be set to zero by default. If it is there you can refer to this brief write up on tuning with glock_purge since you will not want to use the demote_secs and scand_secs settings I am using: http://open-sharedroot.org/Members/marc/blog/blog-on-gfs/glock-trimming-pat… Also, as a further note, your particular usage scenario will dictate what tunings are appropriate. wpa_supplicant and machine freezes

Hi Folks, I'd like to install my USB-WLAN-Stick Netgear WG111v3. Ndiswrapper works correct after installing Kernel-Modules from atrpm ndiswrapper-kmdl-2.6.18-53.1.19.el5.centos.plus-1.52-16.el5.i686.rpm. But by calling wpa_supplicant with wpa_supplicant -i wlan0 -D wext -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf -d machine freezes. My wpa_supplicant.conf: ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant eapol_version=1 ap_scan=1 network={ ssid="MyNet" scan_ssid=1 proto=WPA key_mgmt=WPA-PSK pairwise=TKIP group=TKIP #psk="MyPSK" psk=9050ec6fe020b1738fce16c93c33b3809b9e62d5e6bf955518076eb2d7263 } With this configuration it works correct with Sidux (a debian clone). But with CentOS 5.1 ....??? No hints in /var/log/messages or dmesg available. Has somebody an advice/ a solution for me? More information needed? Thx Timothy

[CentOS] Network problems on new CentOS 5 install on P35, ICH9R mobo

Had to replace dying cpu and mobo, so also replaced IDE with new SATA drive. Installed from latest ISO onto SATA and can't get networking to lease an IP address from my ISP (Comcast). The network utility always comes up with a private address (192.168.0.2) instead of Comcast IP. To add to confusion, if I boot into old IDE drive, I get proper network connection to internet, but lose my swap! Particulars: mobo=Gigabyte P35-DS3R SATA Controller=AHCI PATA Controller=JMicron 20360 new drive=ATA WDC WD1600AAJS-2 old drive=WDC WD400JB-00JJA0 DVD-RW=Pioneer DVR-112D (PATA) NICs=eth0=Realtek RTL-8029(AS) (DHCP) eth1=Realtek RTL-8029(AS) (Static) Has anyone seen this? Will 5.2 help with this situation? Been working on this for days! Hi folks, I have an HP Proliant 140DL G2 server with what appears to be an IDE drive in non-DMA mode. Performance on the server is extremely bad when large amounts of disk activity is taking place. I successfully installed CentOS on 3ware 9650SE controller. Due to some issues with compatibility with my motherboard, I replaced it with a 9690SA. Now the system won't boot (although interestingly enough, it find the boot menu fine, just won't boot past a certain point in the bootup phase. I thought I would reinstall, but anaconda doesn't find the raid array. 3ware does have drivers on their site, but I'm not too sure how to get them on my system? Russ

I think I have booting issues for my custom kernel on centos 4. the sda system cannot find the disk. I used a qemu image to build a centos 4 MATH_EMULATION kernel. This system has /dev/hda. The system I am putting the vmlinuz and initrd files on is a /dev/sda system. I dont think the initrd image is getting built correctly. Does this make sense? What might I look at changing to ensure my initrd is made correctly. Jerry

Live CD?

I just used a Live CD for the first time today, in part to show what CentOS can do for a co-worker who is looking at using it at work and home, but I got the strangest result. We booted the CD and let the centos user log in. It took a really long time to load the desktop and there were no panels, so the only things we could do were browse the computer, CD, home, file system, keyboard (sort of) and pretty much nothing else. <alt><f2> and <alt><f1> did nothing, either - no menu, no input windows - nada. Is that normal? If not, what did I/we overlook? I was expecting a lot more, and from looking around the wiki, there should have been, but I couldn't find a good reference for what the Live CD is supposed to be able to do or let a user do. SELinux error message on CentOS 5: "multiple same specifications"

Hi all, I just installed a CentOS 5 machine from Kickstart. I configure NSS and PAM to lookup and authenticate users from LDAP with authconfig. On my LDAP I also have some automount configuration, but I'm not running automount on this server. SELinux is installed and enforcing. Whenever I try to install an RPM (and in other occasions during boot) I see those messages: # rpm -Uvh ... .rpm /etc/selinux/targeted/contexts/files/file_contexts: Multiple same specifications for /usr/local/lost\+found/.*. /etc/selinux/targeted/contexts/files/file_contexts: Multiple same specifications for /usr/local/\.journal. /etc/selinux/targeted/contexts/files/file_contexts: Multiple same specifications for /usr/local/lost\+found. The RPM installs fine, I guess those are just warnings. (Actually, /usr/local is practically empty, and there are no lost+found or .journal there, so I guess those are really innocuous.) Which command (semanage?) apart from rpm can I use to reproduce and test the problem? (In other words, another command that won't install or change anything on the system but check the integrity of this file.) How can I tweak or control the way this file is generated? Thanks a lot! Frequent Gnome Terminal crashes in CentOS 5.1

Ever since I upgraded all my systems to CentOS 5.1 I have been getting reports from users about "all their windows disappearing". A little digging revealed that they meant all gnome-terminal windows. Since there is only one gnome-terminal process by default for all your open terminal windows and tabs, a crash of that process means losing all your terminal windows. These crashes often (but not always) occur over night when the system is otherwise idle. A quick Google search found a problem on Ubuntu related to VTE (the terminal emulator widget used by gnome-terminal) but not much else of interest. Has anyone on this list experienced this? I find it hard to believe I'm the only one. I never saw this issue while running CentOS 4.X on these systems... Alfred

5.1 Anaconda Install Error

I'm unable to install x86_64 on a host. The installer gets through the first part, asking for install type and it begins loading the images from whatever media was selected. Then anaconda spills a series of cryptic messages ending in 'file not found' and the console on F2 is locked up. I've tried this with physical DVD media, PXE-HTTP and media-boot HTTP install. It happens every time. This is a reinstall to this host. The weird thing is that I was able to install to this host from this media previously. I've seen the note at bugs.centos.org regarding an incorrect .discinfo file but that doesn't seem to be it. The .diskinfo file: 1195929648.203590 Final x86_64 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 CentOS/base /home/buildcentos/CENTOS/5.1/en/x86_64/CentOS CentOS/pixmaps Does anyone have any idea what's going on? Kirk Bocek

Thanks, The issue dos not seem to be with the separator. It is with the @ as a leading char in the group name. I have setup a new server centos 5.1 server as a storage server with over 7TB of storage. The server has been integrated into a large Active Directory network there are 5 primary AD servers and a large number of local AD server at each location (over 20). There are also over 15 trusted domains hundreds of groups and thousands of users. It has been quite a challenge to integrate the Linux server with Samba into this incitement. I am now at a point where I can change user and group ownership of filed and folders at AD users and connect to the server with a windows client. There are also issues with Samba not starting on bootup (yes the service is set to start at level 3 system starts non GUI). And it seems to take quite a while for system to recognize domain users on startup. The [TEST] share works with out issue. The [TEST-ENG] share is not working no matter what I do. The issue that I am having is that most of the groups have a @ at the beginning. Ie: @DIV-Engineering This conflicts with the Samba valid users = directive in the smb.conf. I have been able to change the group ownership to @DIV-Engineering in the file-system without any issues. Is there any way to do this? Hi all, I am soo close. I have have made my custom kernel from a DIFFERENT machine, I have hte USB booting, I have 3 partitions, 1-fat12, 2 - ext3, 3 is swap. on booting it says: VFS cannot open root device NULL please append root= I tried root=/dev/sda2 and still nothing. Is there something about building a kernel on one machine and then taking that to another machine with different disk structure and it not booting??? What do you do in that case? I think - hope - this is my last step to get past... jerry

vsftpd and active mode connections causes FTP session to hang

I've encountered an odd error state that I haven't been able to resolve yet. I have a customer that, for what ever reason, wants to use active mode occasionally for FTP xfers. What they have noticed, is that after you switch to active, and issue a command (they do 'ls', I've done other things like 'put' and 'get', etc.), the connection hangs. If you wait a bit it returns with a "425 Failed to establish connection". I've tried this on three hosts so far (all CentOS 5) and they all behave the same, some of which there is effectively no firewall (all traffic is allowed from my workstation to the host, and no restrictions on exiting traffic). All google searches about this behavour thus far have talked about old versions of vsftpd or using filesystems such as FAT, which don't apply in all cases. Dell 1950 Perc 6/i with centos 4.5

We are currently running CentOS 4.5 on older Dell Systems. We are upgrading to Dell PowerEdge 1950 with a PERC 6/i raid controller. CentOS 4.5 installation does not see the PERC 6/i controller. Dell and LSI Logic only support RHEL 4U6 and higher and SuSe. I've tried building the boot images with the new driver for installation but kickstart still doesn't see the raid controller. I've also used the DRIVERDISK directive within kickstart but that didn't work either. Has anyone else experienced this? Anyone have any suggestions on what I might try next? Appreciate any help. enter run level

I have a centos 4 x86_64 machine that has been working fine. It has software RAID-1. Now when it boots I get the GRUB screen, I get the very first screen about loading Init then I get a prompt about: Enter Run Level: When I enter 3 nothing happens... This is obviously not a normal boot situation. First question: Why this prompt? Second question: since it is software raid do I run e2fsck /dev/sda1 then e2fsck /dev/sdb1? I am booted presently into linux rescue mode. Seems like /dev/md0 is not know in linux rescue... I presume the file system is messed up so I was wanting to run e2fsck. It is an ext3 system. I was in the #centos-social channel and simply stated that I noticed CentOS 3-4 were getting a lot of updates. I also stated that the CentOS 5 was one kernel behind, as in RHEL it is at -53, the gentlemen then told me that I was wrong and it was at -21. I then asked if there was a way to get a progress report somehow on 5.2, and that 5.2 has already upgraded that kernel. The result was that I was banned for being correct. I dont understand this kind of support.

Hi I just grabbed an 8gig thumb drive, took disk 1 centos 4 i386, copied the isolinux directory files to my thumbdrive, then ran syslinux -sf /dev/sdc1 on the device plugged it into my laptop and it does not boot. Is there a step(s) I am missing to get a bootable thumbdrive with centos? Thanks, Jerry

One of our Windows machines here has this interesting property that I could not duplicate in Linux (F8, but I'll check it later at home from C5.1, too). If I open a DOS window, set the properties to have a white background with dark blue font, telnet to another machine, and run some commands, sometimes the commands echo in gray on black (and stay that way). For example, the default ls (which has the color=tty option set), does this, but only with what it prints to the screen. The real killer is vi, which resets the whole screen background back to black with colored fonts, some of which are really hard to read (like dark blue on black - egad!). When I log out, the DOS window resets, but only what it prints, unless I clear the screen, which "fixes" it. Does anyone know anything about this? Seems really strange (like most WinDO$ weirdness). NEVER happens on my Linux box, but it does happen through rdesktop.... Thanks. mhr

I created a i586 install image with qemu. I downloaded the SRPMS package for the kernel and installed it. I cd /usr/src/redhat/SPECS rpmbuild -bp --target i586 kernelXXX.spec I does a bunch of things but it did not build a new kernel and put it in /boot I think I am missing a command to actually BUILD the kernel. Anyone have experience with these kernel parameters? I can't find a whole lot of info on them. I have a situation where I'm trying to stress test a server, dual proc quad core with a tomcat application that is really fast. We can get it to about 60% CPU usage, and processing about 1,350 requests a second but we can't get much past that. It seems we are maxing out the sockets on the system, with more than 60,000 connections in TIME_WAIT. Our requests are really small and light and short lived. So I was thinking of using these parameters to get more out of the tcp stack. Our load balancer is configured to terminate connections to the world after 25 seconds(a typical request takes 0.1 seconds to complete), but I'm not sure if that applies to the systems behind the load balancer as well(I suspect not because there's no apparent setting for that). Currently I have the system configured to take a lower amount of traffic, hovering at around 47% CPU, at around 833 req/s and it has 43k connections in these states: #### state ------------------ 65 CLOSING 94 ESTABLISHED 172 FIN_WAIT1 50 FIN_WAIT2 10 LAST_ACK 497 SYN_RECV 43480 TIME_WAIT On a side note, the 'active tcp sockets' reported by sar seems wildly inaccurate, it reports only ~10 active tcp sockets, it barely varies from the system being idle to the system being maxxed out. The docs I can find says seek expert assistance..any experts reading this ? Running CentOS 4.6 thanks nate

ok..i can install dovecot+postfix+MYSQL..etc..and maybe the problem it's resolve. i don't have problem with the machines, the machines are goods, my problem is the tranparent receive e-mails to the users than are distributed in four machines with the same number the users and different users in each. as does google??. they have one entry to e-mail system (gmail.com) but they have several machine (maybe thousands) in transparent mode. i read something like LVS...some comment about this software..! is my solution or I'm lost? rpm -q versus what's installed

I am trying to install Oracle client 10g (10.2.0) on a 64-bit CentOS 5.0 system. 'rpm -q make gcc glibc etc' reveals some packages as "not installed", yet a yum install <package name> consistently returns Nothing to do. Yum list available <package name> yields nothing needed. If rpm -q <list of packages> lists some that are "not installed" but every variant of yum install and yum list I've tried and googled claiims nothing more needs to be installed, either the OS is misreporting (I doubt that) or I'm missing something that is not easily being revealed, or that I haven't used in a long time and outright forgetting. I still need (per rpm -q): compat-gcc compat-gcc-c++ compat-libstsdc++-devel openmotif21 gnome-libs There has been a suggestion of the version of Oracle (32 or 64 bit) I'm trying to install, but after thinking about it, I believe this question is a more fundamental operating system issue. tzdata, Greenwich zone: URGENT!

Hi! It appears that there have been some changes to tzdata recently. We run an application that needs the server to stay at GMT. Previously, we used the Casablanca timezone but now there seems to be a 1 hour difference to GMT. I checked the London zone and they seem to change time too. I tried to change the zone to GMT with system-config-date (i'm using command line remotely) but didn't find the Greenwich zone! Is there any way to fixed this ? I'm trying to set up mounting of a Windows share for non-root users via /etc/fstab on a CentOS 4.6 box - I've followed the instructions at: <http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/WindowsShares> Using something like the /etc/fstab example given in the wiki page (with, of course, using a valid share, username and password for my set up): //winbox/getme /mnt/win cifs user,uid=500,rw,suid,username=sushi,password=yummy 0 0 When as a non-root user I do: % mount /mnt/win mount error 1 = Operation not permitted Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs) Running mount as root works fine, but I can not get it to work for non-root users. I am building a latest CentOS5 and every newest stuff is ready. All are in directory "/linux/CentOS/5-respin/os/x86_64". My OS is CentOS5 too. I want to add some other pictures during installation process, so anaconda adjustment is needed. Managing Eclipse Plugins

Hi People, I just wondered if anyone had an suggestions on how to manage Eclipse plugins where RPMS don't exist for the particular plugin. In this case Aptana. Using the instructions here http://www.aptana.com/docs/index.php/Plugging_Aptana_into_an_existing_Eclip… I can install the plugin manually to /usr/share/eclipse so that its available to all users on the box. But I need to install this plugin on a high number of machines. I know I could install it on a single machine and then tar up /usr/share/eclipse and turn this into an rpm. But I think this will be asking for trouble in the long run. So I then did some research and found that I should be able to use eclipse update manager from the command line see http://help.eclipse.org/help32/index.jsp?topic=/org.eclipse.platform.doc.is… Thinking that perhaps I could use a script to do the install or use a script to create an RPM. But so far I can't get any of the Eclipse Update Manager commands to work. Asking on some eclipse Newsgroups has got a couple of cryptic responses. So I thought I would ask if anyone had ideas about the best way to achieve what I am after. Also if anyone uses the Eclipse Update Manager from the command line and can give me an example of a command line that works, it would be much appreciated. Thanks
