build custom domU kernel from centos kernel source

Hi, i am trying to build a custom xen kernel from CentOS source kernel rpm . What i want to achieve is to have custom domU kernel without modules, which will boot domU machine without having /lib/modules . My first try is to simple disable Loadable module support , so i have followed tutorial on CentOS wiki for kernel building http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Custom_Kernel . Now it is building, my question is will it work? - again all i have done is to disabled loadable module support. Can someone please point me to sucessfull end? Thanks in advance! D.

Curiosity when installing CentOS 5.1 in addition to W98 & WXP

I got half way through an installation of CentOS on a box that has Window$ 98 in the first partition and Window$ XP in the second, where CentOS was designated for partitions 3 (/boot - 128MB) and 4 (/) and had some strange results. During the install, I changed the default OS to boot to Window$ (because I rarely use this machine, but others who don't have a clue use Wxx), but then while the packages were downloading, I left the machine alone. When I came back, it had rebooted to the DVD, so I pulled it out and rebooted again. It came up in the Windows boot selection screen (W98 or WXP), and never stopped at grub. Should I not have set it to go to Windows by default, or is this something different? Thanks. mhr

mdadm update

Hi, I have uptodate x86_64 CentOS 5 with official repositories. mdadm version is v2.5.4 - 13 October 2006 This version is known to have problems with raid10 configurations. Sadly, I have a 4 disk raid10 on this system. I tried adding Dag's repository but system complains about some packages which are already installed as missing and refuses to "# yum update" This box also has some modifications so I do not want to change repository settings. I want to update mdadm. Can I use standalone rpm file for this update? Thanks.

Gnome-terminal's backslashes look like Ws with a horizontal line through -- how to get a backslash?

Hello! I've just started trying gnome-terminal (instead of xterm) because of its "tabbing" facility. However, I note that with it backslashes appear something like a W with a horizontal line through it. Any known way to get a backslash to appear as a backslash? To see what I mean, use gnome-terminal with echo '\' in bash, ksh, etc. Regards, Chip Campbell

Hi everyone, Any chance I can get the card[1] in $subj to work under CentOS 5.1 ? The only thing I get in dmesg when inserting/removing the card, are messages from pccard: --- dmesg --- pccard: CardBus card inserted into slot 0 pccard: card ejected from slot 0 --- end --- When inserting, no new network interface becomes available, so I assume it doesn't recognize it. Any way I can get it to work? Tips, pointers to relevant docs are all very appreciated. Thank you very much in advance, and have a great day everyone. Windows key works some times I boot, doesn't work others

Hi all, I run CentOS5.1 with all updates, and like to use metacity's keybindings (gconf-editor->/apps/metacity/global_keybindings and keybinding_commands) to set shortcut keys for xterm, nautilus, and the like, so <Mod4>x runs xterm and <Mod4>e runs nautilus, rather how Windows-XP keyboard shortcuts work. I always log on as 'neek', the only user other than 'root' that I use for user shells on this laptop. I've used a default Gnome desktop since fresh install about 4 months ago. I find that sometimes when I boot, the keybindings take effect, and sometimes when I boot, they do not. I reckon one of two things might be happening: - on some boots, the gconf configuration that I have set up fails to be loaded - on some boots, my windows key mapping somehow gets screwed, so that pressing it does not send a Mod4 keystroke to whatever recognises them I don't think the former is happening, because I can run gconf-editor as 'neek' and see my keybinding configuration even when the keybindings are not working, such as this morning. I suspect the latter, because I can press Mod4-x and get an 'x' character in places where I'd expect it to not give me an 'x', for example in an xterm pressing the key combination just sends an 'x' to the console, whereas alt-x does not. When the windows key is working as expected, I don't see an 'x' echo'd to the console. How can I investigate why my Windows key is not triggering the expected keybinding commands? TIA Nick

I am having a deal of difficulty getting this installed and as the web page at www.ledgersmb.org yields a "page not found" error and the ledger-smb-users mailing list seems very lightly used I wonder if someone here could help me out? Intel ICH9R Raid5 Recovery

I had a raid5 on an onboard Intel ICH9R chip under windows. Windows crashed, as it often does, and the array became degraded. At some point during the rebuild, I was doing some hardware maintanence and unplugged one of the drives, and forgot to plug it back in. When I booted up, the array came back as failed. I turned off the PC, plugged the drive back in and powered it back on, but the array stayed as failed. Is there a way to recover the data? I heard dmraid supports ich9r raid volumes, but I keep getting an error saying unsupported map state 2. I found out that dmraid doesnt' support raid 5 (at least not on a ICH9R chip). I heard about this patch: http://people.redhat.com/heinzm/sw/dm/dm-raid45/, but I'm not sure how to apply it to a linux live cd. Does anyone have any idea? Is there maybe a way to reset the metadata to make the intel controller boot the array anyway? Russ

Recover ICH9R raid5

I have a raid5 on an onboard ICH9R FAKERAID. I was booting into windows and windows crashed as it sometimes does, which put my array into a degraded step. At some point before the array finished rebuilding I unplugged one of the drives and forgot to plug it back in. When I booted up the system, it told me that the array was now failed. I plugged the drive back in, but the array stays as failed and offers me no option to repair it. I heard that dmraid supports ICH9R raid. Is there any way to get the data off of there? When I try to use dmraid of a knoppix live cd it complaints about an unsupported map state 0x2. I heard there was a patch http://people.redhat.com/heinzm/sw/dm/dm-raid45/, but I'm not sure how to apply that to a LiveCD. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can recover the data? Maybe I can just change the metadata and force it to boot the array? Russ

The script then mounts /dev/sde1 on /mnt/userdata for a copy of /home and /home/adminusers. /dev/sde1 is a wholly underutilized 300G drive. I'd like to move the contents of /home/adminusers from /dev/sdd1 to /dev/sdc1 and use that underutilized drive elsewhere. can't get Tomcat5 to work on centos 5.1, how do I get it to work?

Hi all A client of ours wants Tomcat 5 to be installed on a CentOS 5 server, I naturally just ran "yum -y install tomcat5 tomcat5-webapps tomcat5-admin-webapps" which installed it without any errors. rsync - set owner and group?

Is there a way to force rsync to set a specific owner and group on destination files? I have managed to get the permissions set up the way I want, but the owner and group are still defaulting to a numeric id instead of the correct owner and group. I suppose I could add a manual "chown -R owner:group" at the end of my script, but was curious if rsync had this built in. Hi all: We have a user who needs to do some work with PAPI, which requires the perfctr patch applied to the kernel proper. Before I do that work here, I wanted to ask the list if anyone knows of a repo where such kernels are available? Also, if anyone has gone down this route and has helpful hints, perspectives, horror stories, etc., I would covet that information also. hi I have defined search localhost in /etc/resolv.conf cat /etc/resolv.conf search localhost i did not define any nameserver ip address in this file i have given the gw ip from where the internet can be reached no dns is running in gateway. no dns service is running on the PC no bind packages are installed on pc but still if i ping to some domain like ping www.google.com it resolves and displayes icmp replies. i dont know from where this name resolution is taking place please help on this what happens exactly. Irritant

Hi again, I've got a nagging irritant with either putty or the man pages, or perhaps my setup. If I use putty to log into my server and request any man page, it returns the page, but really important stuff like keywords are blank. Is this perhaps caused by the wrong terminal setting in putty or is there something with Centos man pages that cause this to happen? Thanks again, Sam

I know this is off topic, so please accept my apologies. This is just out of curiosity, and a number of people I've talked to in the area I live in have said the same thing. About 2 weeks ago, my one remaining xp machine downloaded and installed an update from Microsoft. Ever since then, the machine has run slower than a dead person. I was just wondering if anyone here on the list who still has a xp machine or two running has noticed the same thing? Thanks Jim

Is it possible to lvrename the current root partition?

I'd like to rename my existing volume groups and logical volumes (I picked names a long time ago I no longer like :-). I recently stumbled across the lvrename and vgrename commands, but when I tried the former to rename the logical volume that my root partition resides on, the system became unbootable. In addition to renaming the LV (and VG if I decide to to that as well), what else needs to be changed? So far my list includes: o /etc/fstabb o /boot/grub/grub.conf o /dev/<vgname>/<lvnamex> o /dev/mapper/<vgname-lvnamex> I was hoping the lvrename and/or vgrename would take care of these details. Are there any scripts out there that take care of all the details? If not, I may write one (once I have the recipe to get this working, of course). Alfred

Srv2 had Fedora Core 6 installed, recently I decided to install CentOS5.1 instead. Because the servers are located in a noisy server room, have low-end CRT monitors where installation in graphical mode is not possible, I run installation using vnc method. As the servers to not have a DVD drive, I have put CentOS 5.1 DVD image on a hard disk and booted from a CentOS boot CD ( boot.iso ) or from GRUB [ using kernel and initd from boot.iso ] and specifying HardDisk installation source. First I have installed a small rescue system on /dev/ida/c0d0p1 [ Srv2 ] with eth0 as the interface vnc was using. No problem other than grub which did not install correctly and I had to install it from rescue mode using grub-install. When installing the regular system I decided to use more fancy method: >From my_PC I started ssh session to Srv1, redirecting port 5901 to Srv1/eth1/port 5901 (eth1 on Srv1 and Srv2 are configured to use private IP address range) Then I specified to CentOS51 installer that vnc is going to use eth1 interface. I could connect vncviewer to localhost:1 at my_PC (that is port 5901) which was forwarded over ssh to Srv1/eth1 and Srv2/eth1. This was working, I could prepare installation in custom mode, define LVM logical volumes, mount points, etc. When I came to package selection, however, Srv2 locked hard after some time (I tries 2 or three times, always the same result, somewhere in package selection the Srv2 locked hard). By 'locked hard' I mean no response to ping over eth0 or eth1, not even ARP response on eth0 or eth1, no response to attempts to switch virtual consoles (Alt-Fx) and no message on screen which would give any clue what might have happened. After 2 or 3 attempts to install that way, I run with no problem installation using vnc over eth0 (no ssh port forwarding this time). I do not expect any help for that, just wanted to share my weird experience. (No hard data, the lockup was before any log files could be created by installer, and there was no error messages on screen). Best regards, Wojtek

Hi folks, Here's the situation. I have a group of engineers who love to save things to disk. Now that the filer is getting full, they are interested in archiving some of those things to DVD. The tress containing the things they want to archive are specified like so: /path/path/path/A/04?? /path/path/path/B/04?? /path/path/path/A/05?? /path/path/path/B/05?? /path/path/path/A/06?? /path/path/path/B/06?? ...and there are things in A and B which do not match the specifications. The total amount of data in this specificaiton is around 30GB, and this is not distributed equally through the specification. What I'm hoping for is a program that I can feed in directory specifications like the above, and it will produce for me DVD images (.iso files) containing these trees in such a format that when the engineers want file $X, I can give them the DVD (or the whole stack, if required) and say "there you go" without having to go through a restore process. I don't want something which creates it's own archive format which spans the DVDs (ie split-tar or ufsdump). I would settle for a program that produces a list of files such that I can create DVD images on my own. You could create several iso-images with "mkisofs" (e.g. "mkisofs -o /path1.iso path/path/path/A/04??"). Slightly OT: Extra icons on desktop - SOLVED

I can't think of a better word for this than "weird." I went back and reread most of the emails on the original thread, and both Ross and Bill suggested that something about "misc" might be off. So, I created a new mount point called "other," pointed fstab at it, modified my scripts and symlinks that used to reference /misc, and rebooted. Voila! /other was automounted, as I wanted, and there's only one icon on the desktop for it. I did notice along the way that /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit had a mount -a with a -t list of types of FSs to mount, which did not include ext2 or ext3. I added those, and that did not help the /misc situation. Apparently, there is something funny about /misc in FC8 (is that true in CentOS?). Anyway, problem solved, thanks to all, enjoy your day, etc., etc. mhr

It is as if there is a YUM or RPM database, somewhere, that believes the Kernel has been updated, and it has not been updated? I find it very hard to believe that the Kernel was in fact updated, but that it is still shown as the original Kernel that was on the CentOS5 Install DVD. I changed the setting for my subscription to the CentOS Mailing list, from the Daily Digest to Individual messages. This reply is to your message that was in the Digest I received Sunday morning. In the future, I will be replying to individual messages (using Gmail on the web or with Evolution), so, hopefully, the threading will be better, if not perfect. Gmail doesn't use Folders, they use Labels, and I don't have that working on the web yet, but I can move the CentOS messages into the CentOS Label in Evolution and because it's IMAP, they get moved into the CentOS Label on the web too. Something else for me to check out, but that's on the Gmail web site somewhere and will be much easier to cure than this mystery about the kernel update on one box. All of your ideas about the problem updating the Kernel in my wife's box are very much appreciated! I believe now that when I updated the Kernel (and 2 other packages) on my box and on my daughter's box, it was with PUP and then later, I did a "yum update" to update everything else on those boxes. If there is some place I can check in a yum database or RPM database on her box, to verify the kernel version that's really installed (probably the original one), please let me know where that is. R (statistics package) on CentOS-5 ?

Dear all, the statistics package R (www.r-project.org) was available for CentOS-4, but I need it for CentOS-5 (64bit). RPMforge has R-2.5.1 for CentOS-4, so I thought I'd try to install that on CentOS-5. However, yum complains about missing ggv, and the specfile indeed says that R requires ggv, which is not in CentOS-5 (it has kghostview). I could probably install with "rpm -Uvh --nodeps", but the question is rather: has anybody built R for CentOS-5 ? thanks for any insight, Kay

Yum + priorities plugin question

Hello all! I've recently started using the priorities plugin as part of my best practices. It's very effective, and prevents nasty things from happening (like atrpms upgrading python and disabling yum.) I'm wondering if there's a simple and elegant way to allow package-name-based exclusions. For example: For my mysql cluster, I'd prefer to have the latest mysql and mysql-server packages which I can get from utterramblings (Thanks Jason!), however, to do so while using the priorities plugin, I'd need to make that repo an equal priority with base, so that it'll upgrade. I've worked around the problem by creating a duplicate repo with the exceptions as an includepkg and a priority equal to that of base, but it seems less than elegant, and I know it results in double the internet traffic for the repo mirror, which is less than friendly. Does anyone know if there's a more elegant way to deal with this issue, or might this be an appropriate feature request for the plugin developer? VSFTPD with LDAP

It appears as I have VSFTPD allowing access authenticating to my LDAP server correctly. I did this by configuring my server to authenticate to my LDAP server from the GUI using System -> Administration -> Authentication. However now when I look at /var/log/secure it says authentication failure. How is this possible and how do I correct this? --Thanks, Jake

Hi, how can i make actual xen kernel to work under my domU virtual machines? When i will provide as kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-53.1.14.el5xen as ramdisk /boot/initrd-2.6.18-53.1.14.el5xen.img , it will not work becouse of error that root device does not exists. And when it is booting it is showing that raid md0 and my logical volumes does not exists - like those on dom0. I believe it is becouse of ram disk. What is the best approach to solve this .. in official way? Can i use same ramdisk as for dom0, how? or should i create a new one for xen ... Thanks in advance!

File Permissions or Partition Write/Read for everyone

Hello all, I am kinda new to Linux, FreeBSD...most Windows user, anyway. I got a little problem here maybe you can help me solve it. I just bought a new 500Gb HDD which i formated using ext3 under Centos 5, my plan was to use it under FreeNAS as another Backup File Disk(It has already like 400gb of data), when I try to access the disk via samba/cifs I just have the read attribute or permission, how can i change the whole partition permission rights to be accessible to write/read for everyone? (I will mantain the security using samba users and groups of course.), or do I have to apply the chmod comand to the main folder? I'm really stuck here. Thank you Victor. P.S. Sorry for my english.

Yes, though slammed hardware RAID a bit. Software RAID has it's place don't get me wrong, it's just knowing when and where. Now the problem I have with your approach under the OP's requirements is the only way to fit that kinda storage over that long a period is with external enclosures and there isn't many systems that have external 4 lane serial storage connectors builtin, so one needs a card that can perform that and if you are shopping for a card to do that then you might as well get one for a few $100 more that has on board RAID. Take these benchmarks with a grain of salt. We don't know how these hardware controllers were setup and by the numbers posted, not very well, or they are not very good. A SATA and a SAS drive will have roughly the same sequential io performance. Where SAS shines is in random io. So if it's archive, buy SATA. 65MB/s is roughly what you will see with a single SAS or SATA drive on reads, around 30MB/s for writes. Sequential io is measured in MB/s and random io in IOPS or ios per second. Each spindle in a stripe set will roughly add 50% perf to sequential io and add to the IOPS by the IOPS of the spindle (IOPS+IOPS...). A mirror counts as 1 spindle for reads and 1/2 a spindle for writes (unless RAID is capable of doing parallel reads then it counts as 1 1/2 of reads). A RAID 5 is always one less spindle due to parity and each spindle on writes counts as 1/#spindles (write-back cache helps lessen that hurt). For 4k sequential ios (larger block sizes will post larger numbers). 1 spindle = 65MB/s and 175 IOPS 2 spindles = 97.5MB/s and 350 IOPS 3 spindles = 146.25MB/s and 525 IOPS 4 spindles = 219.375MB/s and 700 IOPS (175 IOPS is from 15K SAS with 3.5ms read seek and 2ms avg latency, figure 80 IOPS for good SATA drive) Now any performance below those numbers is a failure of the RAID system and any performance above those numbers is due to caching and read-ahead. Postfix+MySQL - how to create DB

Hi All, I'm toying around with Postfix and MySQL on a CentOS 4 server (no longer using stock postfix and mysql rpms, obviously). I've read several "How-TOs", and it all looks fairly easy to do. The one thing that puzzles me is the table structure for the postfix mysql database: where is everyone getting it? Also, I've noticed that some people create more tables than others. But, this looks like it's just based on which bits of postfix people want to put into the database. I can just copy the SQL people have posted to create the tables I want. I'd much rather know if there is an official source for this, though. So far I haven't found it. Hi: I need advice on implementing a storage server. I really do not have the $ to spend for a Dell iSCSI storage divice and I am thinking trunning CentOS 5.x with ftp or FreeNAS. Here is what I am looking at and concerned about. Situation: My current storage needs are approximately 1.5 TB annually. This will increase to about 3.5 TB annually over the next 5 years (rough est.). This box will just be a data archive and once it is full it will only be used very infrequently if not used at all. Files are small up to 10 MB but numerous. CentOS: Upgrading to the newer CentOS flavors. I will not have the ability to archive this data to tape and I am concerned about loosing the data when upgrading the OS. How best to handle this? Storage limitation. It is my understanding that there is a 2 TB storage limitation with Linux (and windows) in general particularly for stability. I see that ReiserFS can go up to 16 TB. Is any one using this? If so, how has it been for you? FreeNAS Anyone using FreeNAS? What is your experience? How easy is it to add new drives and keep your data? Upgrading to newer versions? Thanks, Ed

ext3 filesystems larger than 8TB

Greetings. I am trying to create a 10TB (approx) ext3 filesystem. I am able to successfully create the partition using parted, but when I try to use mkfs.ext3, I get an error stating there is an 8TB limit for ext3 filesystems. I looked at the specs for 5 on the "upstream" vendor's website, and they indicate that there is a 16TB limit on ext3. Has anyone been able to create a ext3 filesystem larger than 8TB? If ext3 isn't an option, has anyone used the kmod-xfs-smp.i686 module mentioned on the centos site? Surely it doesn't have an 8TB limit... specs: Centos 5.1 kernel-2.6.18-53.1.14.el5 3Ware 9550SXU 12port raid card Am I just walking into a big nightmare? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to figure this out and I always seem to have trouble configuring apache to do more than basic stuff... I have a web server that has several cnames assigned to it. I want srv1.tobyhouse.com to be served by apache. I want to proxy connections to www.tobyhouse.com to cms.tobyhouse.com (different system) If I do this... <VirtualHost www.tobyhouse.com:*> ProxyPass / http://cms.tobyhouse.com ProxyPassReverse / http://cms.tobyhouse.com </VirtualHost> then I am good but it seemed to not pull the assets like css and javascripts from cms.tobyhouse.com When I did this... <VirtualHost www.tobyhouse.com:*> RedirectPermanent / http://cms.tobyhouse.com </VirtualHost> It sent ALL traffic over to the other server which is clearly not what I want. How can handle this? Must I give a unique ip address to www.tobyhouse.com? Craig

SELinux, postfix and milters

Hi all, I'm trying to add some milters (particularly spamass-milter and clamav-milter, which I acquired through rpmforge) to my postfix configuration on Centos5 with the targeted SELinux policy.. I'm running into difficulty getting postfix to communicate through the unix domain sockets created by the milters, because selinux keeps blocking them. I've attempted to use audit2allow to fix this, and made some progress in allowing postfix to write to the socket. Hi, yesterday I upgraded a centos 4.6 box via yum and now it seems that certain pages, especially swf files stopped working. Does anyone know if ImageMagick got broken on x64?
