Slightly OT? - How do I set up Win98 to access a printer on my CentOS box?

I have a WinXP guest under VMWare on my CentOS 5.1 host and it can access the CentOS printer(s) just fine. However, I also have a Win98 box on the LAN that I would like to be able to print on the CentOS printer. When I try to connect to the printer, Win98 tells me that it can't find the network...? Any suggestions? (This "slightly" really is - it _is_ directly related to CentOS, unlike my previous FC8 post....) Thanks. mhr

The other boxes also have priority working and yum gives the message about 259 (?) packages are protected and the Kernel updates on them were OK. I do not believe that is a setting in Gmail. When I signed up for the list (3 years ago), I selected the Digest, because we had to go back to dial up, when we moved here. We have ADSL now, so I just changed that, to get individual emails from the list. That should begin Monday or Tuesday, and, hopefully, my messages will look better, when I reply. Also, during the past few days, with the DVD reader problem and this one, I have also done some reading of the ML Archives on the CentOS web site and copied messages there that I replied to, before I received them in the Digest the next morning. Hopefully, when I begin receiving individual messages, when I reply to them, the threading will not get screwed up, as it is now. Lanny

Problem mounting failed drive.

What is it that makes "text rescue" able to mount a drive, but I cannot mount it in a running system (or Knoppix/Ubuntu/CentOS Live CD etc) ? When booting with "text rescue" it mounts the old filesystem and I can see all my data (Not that I can do anything with it.... I cannot seem to figure out how to get it out of the system????) Anyhow I rebuilt a 2nd server, and tested and notice the same, even on a working systems I cannot mount the drives in another system....?? So, anyone able to help me either, mount the failed system (currantly sitting in the working system as hdc2) or mount it into anything else so I can copy some of the data off? This all started with a Grub error 25 that I could not seem to fix... Thanks for any tips.

I doubt you can do it. Besides requiring IE, you also have to download and run a Windows based viewer. "yum update" did not update kernel on one box

This morning, I did "yum update" on my wife's box. It did not update the kernel. I ran the command again, and there is a response that no updates are available. Her box is a Compaq Evo D300v Celeron. During the past couple of days, when I did "yum update", on my daughters box and mine (Dell Dimensions), the kernel was updated and in the GRUB menus now, there are two (2) Linux kernels to choose from, as well as the Win XP option, since these are all dual boot boxes. How can I update the kernel on the Compaq Evo so it has an up to date kernel? TIA!

Well, i tried two possibilities years ago.. 1.) : There are SCSI-Disks with jumpers for "Write Protect" , so you have a real Hardware write-protection. 2.) : Have a look at (Open)BSD's "Immutable Flag"-Feature. RH9 to centos 5 386

I am testing the likelyhood of updating a couple RH9 systems to centos 5 386. I found at document that talked about updating to centos 4. steps being: 1.) backup 2.) rpm --import http://pubmirrors.reflected.net/centos/5/os/i386/RPM-GPG-KEY-centOS-5 rpm -Uvh --nodeps http://pubmirrors.reflected.net/centos/5/os/i386/CentOS/yum-3.0.5-1.el5.cen… rpm -i --nodeps --force http://pubmirrors.reflected.net/centos/5/os/i386/CentOS/centos-release-5-1.… yum upgrade Everything was progressing until I did tte "yum upgrade" I got an error about not finding a yum package. "There was a problem importing one of the python modules required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was: No module named yum" What do I do now... Thanks, Jerry

Archive-to-DVD

Hi folks, Here's the situation. I have a group of engineers who love to save things to disk. Now that the filer is getting full, they are interested in archiving some of those things to DVD. The tress containing the things they want to archive are specified like so: /path/path/path/A/04?? /path/path/path/B/04?? /path/path/path/A/05?? /path/path/path/B/05?? /path/path/path/A/06?? /path/path/path/B/06?? ...and there are things in A and B which do not match the specifications. The total amount of data in this specificaiton is around 30GB, and this is not distributed equally through the specification. What I'm hoping for is a program that I can feed in directory specifications like the above, and it will produce for me DVD images (.iso files) containing these trees in such a format that when the engineers want file $X, I can give them the DVD (or the whole stack, if required) and say "there you go" without having to go through a restore process. I don't want something which creates it's own archive format which spans the DVDs (ie split-tar or ufsdump). I would settle for a program that produces a list of files such that I can create DVD images on my own. serial port in linux

No module named snack

Hi everyone--I'm back on the list after some time not managing any Centos machines. It's good to be back. I'm trying to switch a server from sendmail to postfix. It's Centos 4.6. I installed postfix and system-switch-mail. We have an application that was build on a windows platform that expects a case insensitive file system. Is there a way to set one up in CentOS? NTFS should work, I think, but I feel uneasy using that under Linux. Russ

Was going along in Firefox when suddenly my screen went black and the hard drive light came on mostly steady for several seconds. After a little bit I got back the X login screen. determining correct size for LV copy operations

I have some problems with copying LV volumes and determining correct size. For instance, if I want to copy an LV from one machine to another. I dd the LV to a file on the other machine, then dd the file to the new LV. That fails, because a few MB are missing. source: LV Name /dev/VolGroup01/LogVol01 LV Size 4.62 GB target: LV Name /dev/xenvm/lvmtest1 LV Size 4.62 GB Both were created with lvcreate -L 4.62GB, but there's obviously a small rounding or whatever difference. The size of the physical extents seems to be different. I can determine the size of the output file -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4966055936 Apr 30 21:19 lvmtest1.img That is 4849664K which is the smallest size unit that lvcreate accepts. lvcreate -L 4849664K --name lvmtest1 xenvm - and then it fits. CentOS 4.5 - mounting remote windows fileserver using smb or cifs

Hi I need to mount a windows share on a CentOS 4.5 box running stock kernel etc - I have tried using cifs and also smbfs My fstab looks like //share/name /mount/point smbfs username=user,password=password,uid=useridhere 0 0 or the same using cifs When i try and mount that i get the following errors depending on the share type smbfs: mount_data version 1919251317 is not supported CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -22 i would have thought that cifs was the way forward but any ideas? These use creds are being used on an ancient 7.3 box and they work fine thanks

Boot disk changes from /dev/sda during install to /dev/sdb on first boot

CentOS 4.6 x86_64, Dell PE2950 with DRAC5, onboard SAS RAID 1, 2 arrays. After booting installed system, /dev/sda exists but does not appear to be a hard disk. fdisk -l displays nothing for sda. CentOS is on /dev/sdb and the second RAID 1 array is now /dev/sdc. It's been suggested (in the Dell Linux mailing list) that it is related to the virtual CD device of the DRAC. But why would it change after install? Is it perhaps a difference in drivers that are available in the installer vs. the live kernel? How can I find out what /dev/sda is? Any way to force the drive order from the CentOS side? I have a couple lines like: part / --ondisk=sda --fstype ext3 --size=20000 --asprimary part swap --ondisk=sda --size=4000 --asprimary part /home --ondisk=sda --fstype ext3 --size=1 --asprimary --grow in my kickstart file. Is there a way to have 1 kickstart file that works for hda and sda both??? So I would like to have 1 kickstart file that works for either a hda install or sda install. Thanks, Jerry

Turning off Win2008 machines from a CentOS box

I understand this may be able to be done with Samba? Anyone know the syntax for a CentOS 5.1 Samba client and what needs to be done to Windows 2008 Server to allow this (I suspect out of the box it wouldn't allow it)? I was hoping to use SSH with keys and script the login and execution of the native win shutdown command, but I have had troubles making any of the usual win SSH Daemons work under Windows 2008 Server x64. Any ideas would be appreciated! jlc

system-config-cluster problem

I have a 2 node cluster that has been running for a year, and is still up and working fine. However, a yum update at some point broke system-config-cluster and it cannot load the management tab anymore, because it *thinks* the node is not part of a cluster, yet, all of the definions are there and I can modify them and save, but cannot publish the changes to the cluster using the tool. Has anyone else experienced this problem, or know what may be wrong?

f/oss routing solution?

I'm looking for an open source router solution, and someone from the list recently recommended zebra (www.zebra.org) I haven't yet identified all my needs, but I'm guessing that it will do all my routing needs for a, say, class C set of IP addresses, particularly if I ever have to do anything BGP-related. Anyone have any pointers before I delve in? Or possibly a recommendation for another open source routing solution? Yeah, I know about Cisco stuff, but I'm hoping to limp along on a shoestring budget until I get a few more things in place, then I'll rethink everything.

Also, our Desktop boxes all have GNOME and KDE installed on them. The problem is *not* limited to GNOME. KDE also sees the DVD media as blank, when the FC6 Install DVD is in the drive.

No, and I believe that is a GOOD idea and I will post on the GNOME list and hope someone there has run into this and has a cure for this. Someone else here on the CentOS list replied to this thread, that he also has this problem, on an HP box. Also, I'm going to try Alan's idea and swap the DVD readers between the problematic box and my box and see if the problem moves with the DVD reader that is now in my daughters box, or, whether it is with that box itself. That box is now running kernel 2.6.18-53.1.14.el5 :-) The problem still exists, after the kernel update, and as someone else suggested, I will probably post on the GNOME list for any ideas someone there might have. Neither of the GNOME modules mentioned in the TipsAndTricks/HAL article that you mentioned above are available for update: (a) gnome-volume-manager and (b) gnome-mount When I updated the kernel, I also updated hwdata and kudzu. If we knew what is causing this to happen, there could be a fix, but it remains a mystery. Thanks much! Lanny
