system-config-cluster problem

I have a 2 node cluster that has been running for a year, and is still up and working fine. However, a yum update at some point broke system-config-cluster and it cannot load the management tab anymore, because it *thinks* the node is not part of a cluster, yet, all of the definions are there and I can modify them and save, but cannot publish the changes to the cluster using the tool. Has anyone else experienced this problem, or know what may be wrong?

f/oss routing solution?

I'm looking for an open source router solution, and someone from the list recently recommended zebra (www.zebra.org) I haven't yet identified all my needs, but I'm guessing that it will do all my routing needs for a, say, class C set of IP addresses, particularly if I ever have to do anything BGP-related. Anyone have any pointers before I delve in? Or possibly a recommendation for another open source routing solution? Yeah, I know about Cisco stuff, but I'm hoping to limp along on a shoestring budget until I get a few more things in place, then I'll rethink everything.

Someone else here on the CentOS list replied to this thread, that he also has this problem, on an HP box. Also, I'm going to try Alan's idea and swap the DVD readers between the problematic box and my box and see if the problem moves with the DVD reader that is now in my daughters box, or, whether it is with that box itself. That box is now running kernel 2.6.18-53.1.14.el5 :-) The problem still exists, after the kernel update, and as someone else suggested, I will probably post on the GNOME list for any ideas someone there might have. Neither of the GNOME modules mentioned in the TipsAndTricks/HAL article that you mentioned above are available for update: (a) gnome-volume-manager and (b) gnome-mount When I updated the kernel, I also updated hwdata and kudzu. If we knew what is causing this to happen, there could be a fix, but it remains a mystery. Thanks much! Lanny

Documentation for DNS and BIND

Hi, One of the things I have yet to learn is setting up a DNS server with BIND. Can you recommend me some *comprehensive* documentation? I like the sort of documentation that explains things step by step, not too laconically. I don't mind reading hundreds of pages, as long as it's well explained. Bill: I looked at the /etc/grub.conf file on my box and it does not have that included and it works fine here: kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-8.el5 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb quiet I also looked at that file on the box with the problem and it doesn't have that included either. I may edit the file and see if including that cures the problem. Currently updating several packages on the box with the problem, including autofs and hal. If that does not help, I just began to think about updating the Kernel, hoping there might be better support for that DVD reader in a newer Kernel. But, I'm not sure if the support for the HW is the problem. I get the Digest version of this ML every morning, but I read your reply on the ML Archives. Thank you! Lanny

alias for network on centos 4

I was playing with network alias on centos 4 - i386. When I activated the alias ifconfig showed the correct eth1:0 information However I was not able to ping the address.... Tried service network stop and start still not able to ping the address. After rebooting everything seems to be normal and the alias was available... Only thing in my alias file was: IPADDR=x.y.x.y DEVICE=eth1:0 Is that normal? I would not have thought a reboot would be required for that? Any experiences with alias? Mine is a Dell Dimension 4300. I believe the DVD reader was not installed in the factory and that I installed it, later, but, I'm not positive about that. I also believe that the Dell Dimension 4300 had CentOS 5 on it, before I wiped the HD last Thanksgiving, but, I'm not positive about that. Certainly this was working on that box, when it was mine. My daughter rarely puts removable media into that box and the drive has little use, but, that does not mean that it might not be dirty or faulty. However, the drive seems to work properly, at all times, under Windows XP. That these boxes can boot from the same DVD media, and then not be able to mount the media properly, after the installation is complete, is frustrating. > Did you do a mount /dev/hdc /mnt/media? Kickstart syntax for CentOS upgrade

I'd like to automate the upgrade from CentOS 4.6 to 5.1 as much as possible. Since upgrades per se are not really recommended, I'm planning to do a kickstart installation. However, I want to leave one of the existing partitions (/scratch) untouched during the installation. I also suspect it is an OS problem, but, it seems to be very HW dependent. After I read your post, I got the FC6 Install DVD and put it into the DVD reader in my box. Zero problems. The same in my wife's box. But, in my daughter's box, I have the same situation that you described above. I suspect it is something about the DVD reader in that box. However, when it was my box (and newer), it worked OK and I believe it had CentOS 5 on it, before I let my daughter have it. > I will test in some other systems and let you know my results. How to handle updates after rebuilding PHP?

Hi, One of our applications has some very specific requirements regarding PHP, so I had to rebuild it to add some functionality that's not included in the default configuration. First thing I removed every PHP-related package that was installed on the system: # yum remove `rpm -qa | grep php` Then I downloaded the PHP SRPM from http://mirror.centos.org/centos/5.1/os/SRPMS/ and installed it. Next I installed all the build dependencies using yum-builddep. I edited php.spec according to my needs and then built PHP: # rpmbuild -bb --clean php.spec Finally, I installed the resulting packages using 'rpm -ivh', in that order: - php-common - php-cli - php - php-ldap Problem: when I run 'yum check-update', Yum wants to update these php packages immediately, with some packages coming from [base] (not from [updates]). I'm puzzled, because PHP is not in [updates], only in [base]. Now I know I could simply add a line to /etc/yum.conf, something like: exclude=php-* But I *do* want to be notified somehow in case there's an update to PHP, so I can download the new SRPM from the updates/ directory and then rebuild it again. Any suggestions about this? Niki PS: on my desktop I use Arch Linux, where I have some individually rebuilt packages. When I do this, I simply increase the build number, so my packages don't get squashed, but I get an update notification when a new version is available. Maybe this is the way to go, but I don't know how I would do this with RPM.

sendmail and cups gets installed although not chosen in kickstart file

I setup a kickstart file that contains only @core and several packages explicitely listed. postfix is listed, sendmail is not. And there's no package where I would think it needs cups. Nevertheless, after the install I now have postfix *and* sendmail on the machine and sendmail even being enabled. And cups is installed. How can I find out what forced them (and probably many other unwanted packages) on the installation? I thought maybe "rpm -q --whatrequires sendmail" would tell me, but it doesn't. As I am having a problem with deleting files on a client and then can't empty the trash because of permission problems. Will this solve this issue or do I have problems elsewhere? Keep in mind this is a mixed node network with windows and linux. I'm taking pointers from any one with heavy samba experiance. As I am no samba guy. Slightly OT: Extra icons on desktop

I'm running FC8 with Gnome 2.20.0 at work and I have this interesting situation. I have two disks on the system that are both configured to be mounted in /etc/fstab, but I'm seeing two things I believe are strange. One is that the second drive is not getting mounted at boot time. The other is that I see two icons for the disk on my desktop - one with the mount point of the drive, the other with the labvel, and they both refer to the same drive (but, e.g., if I use one icon to umount the drive, the other icon does not go away - this is secondary). Suggestions welcome. That it works OK in MS Windows XP and that I can boot the box from the same DVD, without problems, has me leaning more toward a problem with CentOS 5 Mounting the DVD, in that box. If it is a HW problem, I would think the problem would also appear in Windows and when I boot from that DVD. NFS mount problems

This morning my laptop could not connect to the server by its fstab mounts. I restarted nfs and restarted the network on the server, all without making any difference. Restarting the network brought Bringing up interface borg2: RTNETLINK answers: File exists Error adding address 192.168.0.40 for eth0. but ifconfig shows the correct address for eth0. Alan, I knew of the Dell article, as I have all of those saved for reference. [1] I was just wondering if you knew of any that were for someone knew to Linux. You know the Microsoft type tutorials that have screenshot with them. That's the question I get asked a lot of times from around my home area. In turn when these users that are new to Linux they get discouraged when they can't visualy see pictures or have to edit some text file. They just use to doing things the M$ Way. CentOS could have a much broader user base (Huge), the biggest user base around if simple things like this could be done. i realize though it take volunteers to do this on the wiki. DVD reader: Hardware problem or OS glitch?

Hello: The box is dual boot (Win XP & CentOS 5). A Dell Dimension 4300 Celeron. There was an intermittent problem with this last year and last Thanksgiving, I wiped the HD and installed Win XP and CentOS 5 clean. My daughter asked me to install KStars which is in the kdeedu RPM on the Fedora Core 6 Install DVD. I did that, without any problems, on my box and on my wife's box. On the Dimension 4300, in Linux, the OS thinks the DVD ROM is empty. I suspect this is a HW problem, but: (a) Windows can see everything on the DVD, without any problem and (b) I can boot the Fedora Core 6 Install DVD, without any problem. If anyone on the ML has ideas about what might be wrong with the installation of the OS (I have GNOME and KDE installed and the problem is the same with either desktop) please give me your suggestions about how to get the DVD to mount properly. Hi, first i will explain my experiment : We have ESX server running virtual machines .We want to migrate to XEN. As i did not found any tool for transfering ESX to for example real server, or better to XEN --> please correct me if i am wrong , i found following approach : i will inside virtual machine on ESX boot from Live-CD of CentOS , using dd i will transfer images trought scp to CentOs machine with xen. I believe this one should work, machines on ESX are Windows2003 Servers. So what i need to find is how to write a command which will transfer image trought scp , but for faster transfer also compress it before using tar, or gzip. *so my input will be dd if=/dev/sda1 , my output will be gzipped or tarred image on second side. sda1.img.gz* ** Thanks in advance! dying hd on live legacy system...

We have an old 3.x server whose hd is dying (kernel: hda: dma_timer_expiry: dma status == 0x61) and accessing certain files just crashes the system with a reboot. We have moved as many files to a nfs server as we could so simply. The system has been heavily modified (all using rpms) from baseline. RHCE Training

I am possibly going to be sent for my RHCE training. Looking at https://www.redhat.com/courses/rh300_rhce_rapid_track_course_and_rhce_exam/… I am thinking the concepts do not look difficult at all, having a manual and instructor makes this look fairly easy actually. The only thing that looks important to take outside of this would be rh253 if I wasn't interested in taking the elementary courses. Anyone done the VT courses? To fit within the budget and get what I think I need, I might take the rh253vt before the rh300. Any thoughts or pointers from guys here who have done all this? Thanks! jlc

ClamAV version(s)

I had clamav-milter working as well as clamd, then for some reason clamd stopped and would not create the socket. After much hair pulling, I finally tracked the problem(s) down to /etc/clamd.conf. After commenting all the stuff out that was providing errors, it is now working again. I had somehow mixed versions from sourceforge and centos, and when I could not get things to update correctly, I removed clamav-milter and reinstalled it. My question is about clamd. " clamd --version yields ClamAV 0.88.7/2314/Sun Dec 10 15:02:13 2006 " Is this the most current version available from centos? In the logs, there is a note about it being drastically outdated and pointed me to an FAQ file on clamd. I don't want to go through that hassle of mixing repos and get all fouled up again. Networking help

I have a centos 4.0 box that has three network interfaces and is used as router. It runs shorewall as a two-ISP firewall for a single LAN. This morning, the motherboard's LAN interface gave trouble, spewing out IRQ problems, so I disabled it and changed the network cards. As I only had two slots, I tried a dual NIC card, but it crashed the system every time. Right now I am trying to fit two single NOCs in and to bring the machine back up. However, I can;t get any traffic to route. The DHCP ADSL card will not get an IP. I have used Kudzu to configure the new cards, turned off Shorewall, but no matter what I do, teh cards can't talk to the WAN or LAN. The ADSL is fine, my laptop gets and IP easily. Any ideas what I need to look for? -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

TCPWrappers + Sendmail = not working

I have set up entries in /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny as follows: /etc/hosts.allow sendmail : 10.0.0.0/255.0.0.0 sendmail : LOCAL /etc/hosts.deny sendmail : ALL When I try to connect to port 25 from an Internet host via telnet, the server still responds as usual. The only difference I see is this in my /var/log/maillog: Apr 24 15:41:49 server sendmail[20691]: m3OKfna20691: tcpwrappers (otherserver.example.com, xx.xx.xx.xx) rejection How do I make tcpwrappers simply drop the connection? I would prefer to do this with TCP Wrappers, at least until we get our official IPTables firewall policy worked out. thanks Sean

Problems with KMail and signatures

Hello, For some reason KMail is all but coming to a stand still when I open messages with any kind of signature. So I goto the configuration page of KMail Security Crypo Back ends and I see nothing is checked off. So I hit rescan and get the error that is listed in the attachment. .htaccess for script aliased directories

With the great assistance I got here I was able to get .htaccess to work on a centos 5.1 box running Apache 2.2.3 a few days ago. One other question. I am trying to protect a sub dir within the web space of a domain that is serving site statistics of awstats generated pages. The path to the dir is /home/user1/www/awstats. When testing, I am able to get a username and password prompt for the front page of the site, i.e. for www.mydomain.com, when I place the .htaccess file in www, but I can’t get a prompt for www.mydomain.com/awstats when I place the .htaccess in awstats. I am using the below script alias in the virtual domain conf.d file for this site the awstats directory is located in, so that awstats can generate the log file stats and alias them to the awstats dir which is empty: ScriptAlias /awstats/ "/usr/local/awstats/wwwroot/cgi-bin/ I’m assuming that’s why I can’t get a login prompt – any suggestions as to how to protect the awstats dir with .htaccess for a script alias’ed directory?
