Hi List, Is there an easy way to get a count of the number of active socket connections, or even better, number of socket connections in the time_wait state? (Something lightweight... under /proc/sys/net/ipv4/? I'd like to avoid the impact of listing out all the connections a-la netstat.) Thanks! -Jeff

CentOS 4.6 - dhcp issue

Hi - On my CentOS 4 cobbler server i am having some odd dhcp issues. There is only 1 dhcp server on the network and the cobbler box manages the dhcp. When i kick off the PXE install during the PXE phase things seem OK then when anaconda tried to get an IP sometimes things work out fine and other times it sits waiting for hostname/domainname. From the logs you can see that the mac requesting the IP is constant but the IP being offered is sometimes 'wrong'. In the 2 examples below nothing is changed the differing result is just achieved by trying another install, as i said its rather random. Edit to change startup from SMP to not so SMP

I have an issue on a server that stops to ask SMP or not so SMP on bootup. Its a pain as its a remote unit, and if I update (or the power goes out for 3 hours) the server will not restart.... I remember back in the day editing a start up file to tell it what kernel to start... Is that the file I am looking for to tell it to autostart smp??? Anyone have a 101 on how to do this? Thanks,

I just installed a fresh copy of Centos 5.1, yum upgraded all, and the following error occurred with selinux-policy-devel-2.4.6-106.el5_1.3 rpm. When I was trying to run policygentool, I was getting the following error: Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/share/selinux/devel/policygentool", line 25, in ? Import polgen ImportError: No module named polgen Turns out, online 25 the following diff should be made: - import polgen + import sepolgen I assume the Python module changed names. Installing Centos 5 on HP DL140 G3

I want to install CentOS 5.1 with hardware RAID on an HP DL140 G3 server that I have here for testing. It prompts me for a storage controller. According to this readme page for the latest driver at ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib2/software1/pubsw-linux/p1463703615/v44436/mpt linux-4.00.13.01-2.rhel5.i686.dd.gz.txt CentOS 5 should already contain a "default driver version contained in the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 installation CD" I would rather like to use that than go the complicated route of providing the latest HP driver. That "HP Internal Port SAS/SATA HBA with RAID" actually is a RAID controller from LSILogic and I tried to load all four LSILogic drivers provided on the driver list, but none is accepted. Does somebody have experience with this server/RAID controller and can tell me if I can go somehow with the drivers provided by CentOS 5.1 or do I need to go with the drivers provided by HP? Question about RAID 5 array rebuild with mdadm

I'm using Centos 4.5 right now, and I had a RAID 5 array stop because two drives became unavailable. After adjusting the cables on several occasions and shutting down and restarting, I was able to see the drives again. This is when I snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Please, someone with vast knowledge of how RAID 5 with mdadm works, tell me if I have any chance at all that this array will pull through with most or all of my data. Background info about the machine /dev/md0 is a RAID1 consisting of /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2 /dev/md1 is a RAID1 consisting of /dev/sda2 and /dev/sdb2 /dev/md2 (our special friend) is a RAID5 consisting of /dev/sd[c-j] /dev/sdi and /dev/sdj were the drives that detached from the array and were marked as faulty. I did the following things that in hindsight were probably VERY BAD Step 1 (Misassign drives to wrong array): I could probably have had things going again in a tenth of a second if I hadn't typed this: mdadm --manage --add /dev/md0 /dev/sdi mdadm --manage --add /dev/md0 /dev/sdi This clobbered the superblock and replaced it with that of /dev/md0, yes? well, that's what mdadm --misc --examine /dev/sdi and sdj said anyhow. Ok, so what next? Step 2 (rebuild the array but make sure the params are right!): I wipe out the superblocks on all of the drives in the array and rebuild with --assume-clean for i in c d e f g h i j ; do mdadm --zero-superblock /dev/sd$i ; done mdadm --create /dev/md2 --assume-clean --level=5 --raid-devices=8 /dev/ sdc /dev/sdd /dev/sde /dev/sdf /dev/sdg /dev/sdh /dev/sdi /dev/sdj ok, now it says that the array is recovering and will take about 10 hours to rebulid. /dev/sd[c-i] say that they are "active sync" and /dev/sdj says it's a spare that's rebuilding. But now I scroll back in my history and see that oops, the chunk size is WRONG. Not only that, but I don't stop the array until the rebuild is at around 8% Ok, I stop the array and rebuild with mdadm --create /dev/md2 --assume-clean --level=5 --chunk --raid- devices=8 /dev/sdc /dev/sdd /dev/sde /dev/sdf /dev/sdg /dev/sdh /dev/ sdi /dev/sdj Now it says it's going to take another 10 hours to rebuild. How likely are my data irretrievable/gone and at what step would it have happened if so?

No Network = slow ??

I lost my internet connection earlier today. My home network was still up - it's just the router couldn't get an IP from the cable modem. During that period, my CentOS 5.1 install was extremely slow (2.6 GHz Athlon w/ 2GB ram) at starting non network applications - such as solitare and gnome terminal. It would pause for several seconds before finally starting them. The machine does run bind as a caching nameserver - as I've found that to be more reliable than using my ISPs nameserver, so I'm guessing the slowdown was with bind not being able to resolve anything. Is there anything I can do to prevent the slow application launching in the event of lost network in the future?

SSH Question relating to Public and Private Keys

Hi People, The Linux Environment I am responsible for is using ssh key pairs to allow access to a number or accounts on a number Linux Servers. I currently have the opportunity to re-design some of this. So I would like to tap into peoples experiences to see what might be some good changes to make. Specifically I have a couple of questions 1. Currently all of the key pairs we are using have empty passphrases is it worth the effort of changing this and setting up ssh-agent compared to what you gain in security by doing this ? 2. At this stage I am going to use RSA Keys of the default size, is this generally the best approach? Thanks for any thoughts, and have a nice day :)

How to Contact Package Maintainer

Hi, I'm wondering what the correct channel is for communicating with the maintainer of a particular package in the Extras repo. Specifically, I would like to find out who maintains the DRBD 8.0.x package, as there is a newer version (8.0.12) that I would like to see added. Or, alternatively, what is the process for suggesting that an out-of-date package be updated in the repo? Thanks! P.S. Apologies if this is a double-post. My first attempt did not seem to go.

CONNECTING VIA SSH BETWEEN CENTOS 4 AND 5

Hi, I am trying to set up an automatic connection between CentOS 4 system (server) and a CentOS 5 DomU VM (client) via ssh to enable my to back up development files on the server to the client with a cron process. I generate they key pair without a pass phrase on the client and copy the public key to the same user's .ssh directory on the server as authorized_keys2. When I try to ssh to the Server from the Client, I am still asked for the user's password on the client. If I do the same with CentOS 5 for both Client and Server, I can login without providing a password. The versions of ssh on the two systems are: Client (CentOS 5): OpenSSH_4.3p2, OpenSSL 0.9.8b 04 May 2006 Server (CentOS 4): OpenSSH_3.9p1, OpenSSL 0.9.7a Feb 19 2003 Does anyone on the list know whether these versions are compatible or how to get them to work together without requiring a password. It is not an option to change to CentOS5 on the server side as that system is serving as a development system for a client running RedHat ES 4 and has to have the identical configuration and be binary compatible. Problem with CentOS server: am I running a firewall?

I recently tried to swap server from an ancient Asus PIII machine running Fedora-8 to a Dell PowerEdge T105 running Centos-5.1 . Unfortunately, I have not been able to set it up to allow local machines to access the internet. I can access the internet directly from the server (which connects to an ADSL modem) but not from a laptop connected to the server through an ethernet hub or WiFi router. I can ssh into the server from the laptop, but cannot ping anything beyond the server. It is as though there were a firewall running on the server which will not allow packets on the LAN to pass to the internet. This is probably a very ignorant question, but is there such a default firewall running under CentOS? I've gone back to my old server temporarily, but would prefer to sort out the new one if I could. Any advice or suggestions gratefully received.

How to create static routes on startup with CentOS4?

Hi, I'm working with the iproute2/iptables toolset on my CentOS4 server to create custom routing rules. However, I'm a bit at a loss how to create these permanently so that they are automatically reloaded upon reboot of the server. I know that iptables has a config file in /etc/sysconfig/iptables that is loaded by /etc/init.d/iptables startup script. Is there anything that works similarly for the iproute2 ruleset? I can't seem to find anything in /etc/init.d/network except for references to static routes using /sbin/route, which isn't good enough if one wants to use multiple routing tables. Nor can I find anything in /etc/init.d/ that would seem applicable to the iproute2 system. Any ideas/suggestions? Do I have to create my own custom startup script for this? Or is there somewhere already existant I can put iproute2 commands? Thanks! Eric

Every time a "new" user logs into a development box (which does not use nfs for the home dirs) the get could not chdir to their home dir. They call me with the error and I do a: cp -a /etc/skel/ ~USER && chown USER.users -R ~USER/ and it is fixed. yum update did not complete

I was doing a yum update today. It downloaded all the packages. was doing the next part and my remote connection was lost. so ssh session was killed. When I logged back in I am not sure if the update is done or not. I presume not. I presume it died with my remote session. I do a yum update now and it returns as if there is nothing to update. last I saw it was 30 out of 312 in the installation section. What next? Jerry

NIS libuser and auto-make of maps

I have my NIS user/group files separate from the system user/group files using libuser to manage them and that works well, but I am trying to find a way to get libuser to invoke a 'make' of the NIS maps whenever it updates the master files. Is there a routine I can configure in libuser to do this, or am I stuck having to do it by cron? Ross S. W. Hi all, Is there any more exhaustive explanation on this command? find / -type f -perm -2. Someone said that it means to find all files which have 'other' write access. From the man page it only says: -perm mode File’s permission bits are exactly mode (octal or symbolic). Symbolic modes use mode 0 as a point of departure. -perm -mode All of the permission bits mode are set for the file. -perm +mode Any of the permission bits mode are set for the file. Is there any table that explain all that mode? Hi i just swicthed from opensuse and having some issues that were not present in suse. 1. add/remove software (package management)does not work. Opensuse flawless working. 2. how to add dvd as repository. in suse it was automatic. i choose centos b/c it has the longest upgrade cycle. i am using centos 5.1 on vmware server but if i cant solve it i will switch back to suse. redirecting outside connections to https on apache

Hi friends, There are about 15 applications hosted on different in our infrastructure mostly running on apache/iis/tomcat. We have a frontend apache server running on Centos 4.4 64bit which make these applications accessible to outside world. For the applications which are running on tomcat we are running jkmount to make these applications available without mentioning tomcat ports. For apache/iis applications we are using ProxyPass. The issue we are facing is that we are not able to make these applications accessible through https automatically means if the user is not from within the LAN then the http link should automatically redirected to https. We already have GoDaddy stamped ssl certificate on this apache frontend server but we are struggling for rules for outside world. What is the best way to make these applications accessible to outside world through https connections only that is if somebody use http://xx.xx.com/xx to use the application it should be redirected to https we don't have the requirement for https connections from within the LAN but definitely for outside connections. MS Exchange to CentOs (multiuser)

Is there a way to get mail from a MS Exchange server that is addressed as user(a)host.domain.com rather than the user(a)domain.com so that users on host.domain.com can read their mail on that host (CentOS). Custom SELinux file contexts?

Hi. Do anyone know of some place to put custom SELinux file context specifications? I would prefer not to append lines to /etc/selinux/targeted/contexts/files/file_contexts but rather put one or more similar files somewhere. A file_contexts.d firectory would be nice, but it isn't available. Just creating your own file_contexts.local file does not work, I already tried. I'm running CentOS 5.1 Regards Ingemar

This and dump/restore should work. I need to (occasionally) automatically drop out of X11 mode, recompile something, and then reboot. I can drop out of X11 with "init 3", works fine. I use "chvt 1" to ensure I am on virtual terminal 1 My recompile and reboot also work. The piece that doesnt work is: make | tee $LOGFILE I was expecting the output (stdout) to be virtual terminal 1. My LOGFILE has all commands in it from my successful recompile but I dont see anything on virtual terminal 1. How do I get the output of my make to show on the console and also in my logfile? Create Local CentOS 5.1 repo

I am trying to create a local base repo from the DVD on a webserver as I am not able to install with the x64 DVD. I have done this before I recall by placing the DVD contents in the root of an empty webserver, but I have many existing repo's on this current server and so I wanted to maintain the existing hierarchy structure. I tried using the createrepo command and neither that nor copying the DVD into specified dir is working. Anyone know how to do this? Thanks! jlc

Tonight, I tried to roll out fuse on my CentOS 4 production system. (in order to use GlusterFS) I have two identical servers, and one took, the other didn't. How simple could this be? # yum install yum-plugin-priorities # yum install rpmforge-release # yum install fuse dkms-fuse both of these seem to work. Yet I run [root@kepler drivers]# modprobe fuse FATAL: Module fuse not found. Command to get tape capacity status?

I have an Overland tape library connected, via SCSI card, to an out-of-box, full install of C5 install on an old PC. I have a script that uses tar to archive data to tape and mtx to change tapes. What I don't know, if possible, is to obtain the status of how much tape is left in the drive. If I get a write failure, I'd like to know if the tape is bad or has run out of space. I know of bacula, amanda, and other backup methods, but I prefer to use the simplest options possible, mainly because if a hard drive failure occurs, which has happened at the last minute, I can take the original C5 media from CD, install it, and get back up and running in no time. So, any way to inquire remaining tape status and [estimated] capacity? Thanks. Scott

Strange reboots

Hi, I have a CentOS 5.0 running as a web server. # uname -a Linux hostnamehidden.net 2.6.18-53.1.14.el5 #1 SMP Wed Mar 5 11:37:38 EST 2008 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux Every 59 minutes (maybe every hour) it reboots without any logs, without any traces and unfortunately with breaking software raid. After reboot dmesg does not have any strange entries. I double-checked crons, any strange services, nothing suspicious. I did "yum update" recently. I went to Datacenter and waited before the monitor but during reboot I did not see anything strange. I guess reboot is cold reboot. I changed all system and cpu fans. Upgraded system powersupply with a more powerful one. Placed server infront of air-conditioner. Do you have any idea? Thanks.

gallery2 under CentOS-5.1

Is there a CentOS RPM for gallery2? I'm thinking of installing gallery2 through the preinstaller if I can't find an RPM. Is this the best way to go? Is anyone happily running gallery2 under CentOS? Any advice or suggestions gratefully received.

Updating Dovecot package?

Does anyone know if upstream ever plans on updating the dovecot package to a non RC version or to even one of the RC versions that isn't so insecure, And by insecure, I of course refer to the recent rash of bugs which have been found. Thanks, -Drew
