Adding Ethernet alias (why 3 hard links for an ifcfg-eth file?)

I need to add eth0:1 with a new IP address to my C5-based router. Does a design document exist for the ifcfg family of scripts that explains how they're to be used? Before I go digging through the script hierarchy I'm hoping someone can point me to documentation to make the process easier. kickstart ks.cfg file on USB devices

Is there an easy way to specify the proper device location for the kickstart configuration file if it is on a USB flash or USB floppy drive? Depending on the hard disk configuration they might by /dev/sda, /dev/sdb, etc. On SuSE'autoyast instalattions, the system searches all available devices for an ``info'' configuration file. Mail problems? Need help finding this process!

Hello All, I can't get this one figured out. The few search hits I get on it suggest it is mail-related, but I don't even know how that was determined. Apr 11 12:18:17 mxt root: Process did not exit cleanly, returned 255 with signal 0 I get one of these per minute. I can't seem to tweak for more verbosity. Could someone tell me what is going on or point me to a place to start troubleshooting this? CentOS 5 final fully updated Sendmail 8.13.8 Dovecot 1.01 MailScanner 4.68.8 SpamAssassin 3.2.4 ClamAV 0.92.1 My milters have been turned off for troubleshooting. Thanks, Glenn

ssl and NameVirtualHost

I recently aquired a Verisign SSL certificate for my web server on Centos 4, with apache 2.0.59 from centosplus. It however doesn't seem to be working the way I've set it up, browsers connect but are told the certiticate is not recognized. Showing more info, the information looks correct. I think it has probably to do with the fact that I'm using the certificate on a virtual named host, and I wonder If any body has experience doing this? A few places in the apache documentation suggest that SSL cannot be used with name based virtual hosting, but I don't if that means, not at all, or not with multiple named hosts. I have multiple NameVirtualHost on port 80, but will only plan to use one of the names on port 443. The start of the section in my ssl.conf goes like this: <VirtualHost _default_:443> ServerName nameprotected.domain.edu:443 ServerAdmin me(a)domain.edu DocumentRoot /var/www/docs/nameprotected nameprotected.domain.edu is a DNS CNAME to the actual host. How do folks do SSL and virtual hosts? multiple IP addresses is not an option for me. TIA Tony Schreiner

Building a 64bit rpm

I want to build the 64bit version of Xen 3.2, they only show one srpm available. I assume if its compiled on a x86_64 version of CentOS 5.1 it will be a 64bit rpm when its done? I am aware its not good to build as root but out of curiosity, if I used a vm that I would later destroy, is the only caveat to building as root potential damage to the build system, or can the actual rpm be built incorrectly? If you're sshed in, the last update of top will be preserved at least until the system is back up. My old server led me on a wild goose chase when it rebooted whenever backups ran. Turned out that running amanda for backups was the heaviest load the system saw so it aggravated a hardware problem (bad capacitors). Not saying that that's specifically what's going on for your system but there are circumstances where software running causes a load change that then triggers a hardware fault. Hi, I'm running CentOS 4 with most of the latest updates, but am having trouble with iptables and the CONNMARK target. Is it available in the CentOS 4 kernel? Running on i386: kernel: 2.6.9-67.0.4.ELsmp iptables: v1.2.11 # iptables -t mangle -A PREROUTING -j CONNMARK --set-mark 1 iptables: No chain/target/match by that name I see I do have the CONNMARK lib in /lib/iptables/libipt_CONNMARK.so. question on RAID performance

Hi all, I was wonder what experiences there are out there with using RAID-X for performance increases. I do use RAID-1 (2 disks) but am interested in attemtps to gain higher R/W performance. Do the RAID-5's etc give noticeable performace increases? A significant help for me was using ccache for compiling programs. That was a real performance increase. SugarCRM pro and PHP 5.2

We're looking at SugarCRM 5, but they strongly recommend PHP 5.2.4. Looking around I see that a few individuals are maintaining repos for CentOS, but I'd prefer to get it from one of the larger repositories. Anyone out there using http://www.jasonlitka.com/yum-repository/ ? Any idea when PHP 5.2x will be available? --Chris

aide questions, please

I'm trying out aide since tripwire doesn't seem to be in the 5. releases anymore. I do not have Selinux on the server (no at installation), and I just yum installed the aide rpms, so I should have the latest. When I run my aide --init, I get all of these lines for all the files: lgetfilecon_raw failed for /usr/share/X11/app-defaults/XLogo:No data available I then copy the 'new' db file to the regular db file and run aide --check, and it seems I get the above lines all over again. It's as though the db files aren't being read. I noticed in the preceding release of aide that problems existed and was related to Selinux and the inability to read gz files. Am I doing something obviously wrong? Do I need to do an --update or is this just when I get reports that something has changed after the --init? Thanks for any help and replies. Steve Campbell

snmpd wont start on CentOS 4.4?

Hello All, Ive searched the arqchives, but didnt find anything like this.. Maybe im missing some trick here... The problem: I've instaled snmpd and snmp-utils packages with yum. Im using and old simple .conf file, i've been using on my fedora 1 box, but when I try to start snmpd, it just says OK, (Starting snmpd..........[OK]), but the service dont work at all. I dont see any process running with "ps". Ive checked the logs, and found that it could be related to SE Linux and I tryed to disable it, but it still doesnt work. Im not using iptables localy, so, its not iptables related. Already tryed uninstall <> install. Any trick here? Thanks a lot. Gustavo. BTW: Its currently working on my fedora1. This is the last thing I need to fix to upgrade.

Your problem sounds like it has nothing to do with sendmail, but with any IP traffic. Does the other company have a Web or FTP site at the same IP address or with in the same class C? If so, when email doesn't work, I bet neither of these work either. I've seen this happen before. The ISP isn't properly routing traffic between your two networks. Does anyone know of a way to specify a CustomLog file name in apache based on the vhost? for example, I have 10 vhosts and instead of giving each one a CustomLog directive and specifying a different log file I'd like to do something in global that does the same thing, ala vhost elvis customlog elvis.log vhost king customlog king.log becomes customlog $VHOST.log I know that this is a bad idea, I know about the open file concerns. Force sendmail outbound routing for specific domain name

CentOS 4.6 Hi All: Is it possible to force sendmail to use a specified host name for outbound email to a selected domain name instead of the host name that can be found by looking up the DNS entry? The problem is that we have a client that uses the same ISP as we do and the IP addresses assigned to both of us are very close. This has resulted in connection problems specifically with our outbound email to the client. I believe it is an issue with TCP/IP routing. In the past the ISP has setup some sort of special routing that redirects our email to the ISP's backup mail server which then delivers the mail to the client. Every once in a while the ISP does something with their configuration and the routing override is lost for several days until we can get them to recognize the problem and then figure out what they did the last time. This happened over the weekend and we are still waiting on the ISP to fix it up. My thought was can we configure this in our mail server so that we and our client do not have to suffer with this again? file conflicts when updating from 5.0 to 5.1

I get these two errors when I upgrade to the current 5 base. centos-release-5-0.0.el5.centos.2 CentOS release 5 (Final) file /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo from install of centos-release-5 -1.0.el5.centos.1 conflicts with file from package centos-yumconf-4-4.5 file /etc/sysconfig/rhn/sources from install of centos-release-5- 1.0.el5.centos.1 conflicts with file from package up2date-4.4.67-4.centos4 I think this setup is an inplace-upgrade from 4 to 5, it's been offline for some months, now I'm resurrecting it. CentOS-Base.repo was edited by me to point to a local repo. I haven't ever seen this to be a problem. Is yumconf from CentOS4? up2date-4.4.67-4.centos4 seems to be coming from CentOS 4? Maybe I should just remove both packages before update as they don't seem to be part of centOS 5? (at least I don't have them on 5 installs) I wonder why this wasn't a problem when going from 4 to 5, though. How to get status of notebook lid?

Hello, I am using CentOS 5.1 on a toshiba tecra 8000 notebook. That works great so far. The only thing I could not realize is to shutdown the notebook if closing the lid. Therefor I need the current status (open or close) of the lid, but I don't know how. Is there any way to get this status, maybe under /proc/ or by some command? CentOS 5.1 x86 medium installation problems

Hi, I had downloaded CentOS 5.1 x86 DVD image, and although it passed sha1sum or md5sum test and I burned it verifying it, installation failed. Also if I recall correctly, when I tested the medium during install, it failed although as I said the media was verified. ==> The same things happen with Scientific Linux 5.1 x86 installation DVD, so perhaps it is a Red Hat EL 5.1 x86 DVD issue?

Xorg crashes centos 5.1

From dmesg after the crash. Xorg[12774] general protection rip:2b3daaff218b rsp:7fff01440950 error:0 Anyone experiencing X11 crashes? I have an amd 6400+ centos 5.1 x86_64. This typically happens when I VNC in from home into my machine at work. My machine has nvidia card and I do run the binary drivers. However, I switched out for a short time and ran the nv driver and it happens there also. Any ideas? Anyone else see this? Anyone else using vnc? I do load in xorg.conf the vnc module. Jerry

lvm VolGroup00 problem after disk upgrade

Hi to all, i am facing a really strange problem ,and i am not able to find a solution by myself and it is really critical for me to solve it asap :( I have replaced old sata disk with new one on centos , i did a whole cp -a copy from single mode do new disk. What i have done? 1) using fdisk created sdb1 (Linux) and sdb2 (Linux LVM) 1) created volume group boss on new disk at sda2 2) created group volumes root, home, swap 3) formated /dev/mapper/boss-root with ext3 4) fromated /dev/mapper/boss-home with ext3 5) created mkswap on /dev/mapper/boss-swap 6) formated /dev/sdb1 with ext3 (will be boot) mounted all under /new and did cp -a from current disk to /new location (without /proc and /tmp) then created /new/proc and /new/tmp directory after that i turned off computer and removed old disk (sda) booted using centos cd with linux rescue everything got mounted under /mnt/sysimage chrooted to /mnt/sysimage then i edited /etc/fstab with current values : /dev/mapper/boss-root for roor /dev/mapper/boss-home for home /dev/mapper/boss-swap for swap edited /etc/grub.conf with root= /dev/mapper/boss-root did grub-install /dev/sda and now the problem after kernel load i will get info that GroupVol00 (which was lvm group on old disk does not exist) info about boss group fonded and then i will get an error that /dev/root ???? does not exist and then that /proc does not exist and then kernel panic Where is the problem? I did this whole process so many times without error and know i am stuck do not know where. I checked lvm.conf double, checked if /etc/fstab /etc/grub.conf configured OK checked using lvm syntax for lvm ... Thanks in advance!

Good Day All, I have a serious problem on one of my servers running CentOS 5!!! The problem started this way, I wanted to store some data under /home and I got an error message saying it is in the read only mode So I rebooted the machine, Then I see this serious error messages at boot time (I am unable to boot) Here is the Error Message!!! *** Error occurred during the file system check. *** Dropping you to shell; the system will reboot *** when you leave the shell Give root password for maintenance (or type control D to continue): Bash: dircolors: command not found Bash: /usr/bin/id: No such file or directory Bash: [:=: unary operator expected (Repair filesystem)1 # When I press control D the machine reboots itself and comes back to the same prompt asking for root password for maintenance Your help in this matter is highly appreciated Many Thanks Harry

rsync question

I run several backup scripts by cron, one of which backs up my mail. I do not want it to back up the Trash folder, but it appears to be doing so. I conclude that my script is faulty somewhere, and would be grateful for advice. The command is rsync -auvz --delete-after --exclude-from=/home/anne/rsync_skiplist_mail.txt /home/anne/Maildir/ /Data3/anne/Maildir/ where rsync_skiplist_mail.txt says *~ .[a-z]* .[A-Z]* Maildir/.INBOX.Bugs/ Maildir/.Trash/ Comments, please? hw question: asus dsbf-de sata ports?

Hello List, I'm hoping someone else out there has an Asus DSBF-DE server board, and can tell me if anything special needs to be done to get ports 5 and 6 of the onboard SATA to work under Centos 5.1 x64. I have drives on 1 through 4 that are detected and working properly, however, a drive on 5 is not detected, from what i can tell, the kernel doesn't even see phy's for ports 5 and 6. On an older box, unused sata ports were still identified, but showed there was no drive attached. Even hot-plugging a drive into ports 5 or 6 generates no events in dmesg or the system log... it's like those ports are turned off or something. I've checked the bios, and nothing jumped out at me as an obvious switch that says "turn on ports 5 and 6". This board is using Intel's 5000P chipset, and linux appears to have chosen the generic intel_piix driver to access the onboard sata. I have a second sata hba on the system, a supermicro 8 port card, which loads up later using the sata_mv driver, It has no problems right now, and is currently Any ideas? Hello, What can I do when attempting to run depmod with these options: -Ae -b base -F System.map to prevent depmod from appending the following path: lib/modules/2.6.18-53.1.14.el5/modules.dep.temp to the specified base? I am specifying a base as: -b ./lib/modules/2.6.16.23-custom So depmod errors/fails with: FATAL: Could not open ./lib/modules/2.6.16.23-custom/lib/modules/2.6.18-53.1.14.el5/modules.dep.temp btw, '/lib/modules/2.6.18-53.1.14.el5' belongs to the native system that is running on my host Why is depmod using that "system" path? rsync question

Hi folks, I've been trying to wrap my head around this for a bit, done my googling and archive searching but I still can't seem to 'get' it. Here goes: I've a spare drive in my CentOS5.1 box, which (for testing now) I mount manually under /mnt/backup I want to backup the /home tree to that box nightly via rsync (cronjob), so I tried this: rsync -avrogz /home/ /mnt/backup/ All goes well, but it seems that rsync is copying the files and compressing them into an archive....both the file structure and the archive exist. Is there a flag I'm missing, or is there a better, more efficient way to get this accomplished? Thanks in advance, -Ray

I read that XFS has problems with 4K Stack size for Linux on 32-bit systems. How did we address this in the centosplus kernel? Since what release of CentOS was this problem resolved? Is there a quick way to know what size the Linux stack is configured to be in a system's that's running? Thanks for your help.

Setting clock rate on CentOS kernel

Last evening I updated my Cent 5 server to 5.1. All went flawlessly, and it rebooted with the new kernel just fine. How do I set the clock rate on the new kernel? According to documentation it can be done, but everything I read is rather vague. Check out section 3 at the URL below: http://wiki.centos.org/Manuals/ReleaseNotes/CentOS5.1/ I'm using a 32 bit server installation (no graphical stuff) on a Dell Poweredge 2650. I'd like to compare performance of a 100 Hz kernel against a 1KHz kernel. It reads like it's simple enough to set the divider if I just knew where to set it. -- Ben

Apache Authorization Access Control - location of htpasswd in Centos 5.1?

Hi, I’m trying to set up a private family web site for genealogy, and want to set up Apache Authorization access control for this site, and once the user has logged in has access to the entire site. I’ve been reading the info at http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/howto/auth.html to learn how to do this. I’m just planning on passing out the same username and password to all family members and allow everyone in the family to use the same username and password, to keep things simple. The server is running Centos 5.1. The first problem I am running into – I’m trying to use the htpasswd utility that came with Apache 2.2 to create a password file. The default location according to above URL is in /usr/local/apache2/bin/htpasswd but apparently it’s not located there in my install. I tried creating a password file by executing htpasswd -c /passwd/passwords famsite but apparently htpasswd is not in my path, I’m getting the “cannot create file /passwd/passwords famsite” error. Anyone know where the default location of htpasswd is on a centos 5.1 install? Hi all, 1) My NFS3 clients don't display or obey existing non-POSIX ACLs on files of NFS3-mounted exports. 2) setfacl on the client throws error and fails : # setfacl -m u:stowler:rw testfile.text setfacl: testfile.text: Operation not supported 3) at time of client mount the server's /var/log/messages shows "kernel: svc: unknown version (3)". I personnaly like the combination: Postfix, Mailscanner, Group-Office. Group-office has the functionality i need (email, calendar, calendar sharing, tasks, filemanager, addressbooks, projectmanager etc... Yet is quite simple to setup and use... In the professional version there is also a synchronisation option to sync with outlook... I don't think it's the path of htpasswd that's the problem but here it is anyway: /usr/bin/htpasswd. The problem is more likely that the directory you're trying to create the password file in with the command "htpasswd -c /passwd/passwords famsite" doesn't exist.
