Hi, does something like the SUSE/Novell ntsutils (previously called "supportconfig") or Microsoft's MPS Reports exist for CentOS or Red Hat Enterprise Linux? I mean a program that reads and exports various configurations and parameters to facilitate technical support. Thorsten

New kernel (2.6.18-53.1.13) generates "unknown attribute" errors during boot

I've seen this now a few times, but of course I didn't write them down, so I may have the wording a little off. The new kernel seems to contain something in udevd that is now generating a whole slew of unknown attribute(or something like that) errors during the boot, before the part where dmesg picks up. They don't seem to be causing any actual problems while the system is up and running, but.... Anyone know anything about this (and what)? Curious. mhr

problems with iscsiadm

Hello, I'm fairly new to centos and to iscsi, I have installed a fresh copy of centos (CentOS release 5 (Final)) and installed iscsi-initator-utils, iscsiadm -V shows iscsiadm version 2.0-865 . when i try to connect to iscsi target it doesnt work ... it just stays idle , i try something like: iscsiadm -m discovery -t st -p 172.20.2.76 show or with -m node .... --login ...etc, none works. using the same configuration on ubuntu gutsy, same version things work! i also made both /etc/iscsi/iscsid.conf identical ... no luck :( i did tcpdump too (-vv -n ) and then grep the ip of the iscsi target, i see no traffic to the iscsi target at all on the centos machine, i tried it on the other machine it works :S Is there anything else to check? firewalls are all shutdown on all nodes ... i tried switching ips too .. any hint is greatly valued, thank you -- Maysara A. Hardened PHP? Suhosin patch?

Hi, I'm running a few PHP-based apps on our server (PMB, SPIP, Joomla, PHPMyAdmin), and I'm not always comforted about security. I don't know the details, but many a security expert frowns when it comes to PHP. Now I just stumbled over this: http://www.hardened-php.net/suhosin.127.html Has anyone already tried this out? An opinion about it? Is it worth it? Since I have to rebuild PHP anyway (because I need some specific modules that can only be obtained by rebuilding it), it wouldn't be much of a hassle. system-config-display problem

I bought a Viewsonic VG730m monitor, analogue and digital. With a digital cable connected the screen keeps blanking for a second or so. system-config-display shows it configured as a CRT monitor, and refuses to accept that it is an LCD monitor. I've tried manually editing xorg.conf, putting in the manufacturer's values for horizontal and vertical refresh, but the problem remains. The Viewsonic website has lots of information for windows and some for mac, but nothing for linux. I need either to find how to make system-config-display keep the setting I'm giving it or to know what entry to put into xorg.conf to make it understand that it is an LCD display. Sorry if this sounds naive, but I've not had a digital monitor before. I could go back to using the analogue connection, which gave no problems, but you'll understand that I'm reluctant to do that. Centos 5 and milter rpm's

As I mentioned on this list before, I'm switching from Fedora 6 to Centos 5. I'm setting up the mail server and on Fedora I used the milter rpms for greylisting, spamassassin, mimedefant etc. However I don't see that those are included with Centos? Is this true, or do my yum repositories need to be changed to look in an 'extras' location? Or is there some other source for sendmail milter RPMS like on FC6?

Modify kickstart initrd to add Buslogic driver

Hi I have a running kernel with the same kernel version of that in the kickstart that contains the Buslogic driver which would enable me to install a vmware client using kickstart. Is there an 'easy' way to take the initrd that contains the correct drivers and inject these into the initrd of the kickstart kernel? Or does anyone have a kickstart initrd available with the Buslogic drivers for an 2.6.9-55.ELsmp kernel? thanks Tom

hello everybody i´m trying to connect to my postgresql via tcpip and it thow an error is not accepting tcp-ip connections I ask to google but i dont find the solution, people said about the prostgresql.conf enable tcpip, I try but when i start the service it thow an error. enigmail 0.94.3 on centos-4.6 x86_64 not working

Hi I have tried to install/setup enigmail 0.94.3 on centos-4.6 x86_64 with no success. Either thunderbird (1.5.0-12) crashes on startup, or it writes "error in accessing enigmail service" I have tried it with a clean thunderbird profile with no success to. The download and installation works and enigmail is shown as an extension. gpg is installed and the path is configuerd in enigmail Has anybody success using enigmail on centos-4.6 x86_64 ? regards Hansjörg

CentOS5 installation crashes

Im installing CentOS5.1 on an Acer Aspire 5021 laptop with AMD Turion64 and ATI X700 128MB gfx card. I want to partition my 80MB ATA disk as LVM, so I: Choose custom partition. delete all existing partitions. add one LVM vg partition taking up entire disk. I do not change any default options. I then click the LVM button to add my logical volumes as follows: 5GB / 8GB /home 5GB /tmp 4GB /var 1GB swap all are ext3 partitions. I exit the LVM dialogue and click Next to continue with the partitioning, and... it all crashes. I get a debug error box with lots of unintelligible errors that I am completely unfamiliar with. I click OK on the error dialogue and the installation freezes and I can only power off with the button. PAE Kernel doesn´t boot

hi @all, i´m having big problems implementing a pae-kernel. i´m using centos5 on following hw intel core2duo 2,66 e6750 gigabyte p35-ds3p board 8 gb ram 4 * samsung_sata_hd501lj nvidia geforce 8500gt i can use a xen-pae kernel without having problems, but as i need to run vmware, it´s not a valid option to keep that kernel. the default kernel (which supports only up to 4gb ram) works fine, too. as soon as i boot a pae kernel the system stops booting at the point: "udev starting". i also can´t install the 64-bit version of centos5. i´ve tried the following kernels 2.6.18-53.1.4.el5PAE 2.6.18-53.el5PAE 2.6.18-53.1.6.el5PAE 2.6.18-53.1.13.el5PAE 2.6.18-53.1.13.el5xen 2.6.18-53.1.6.el5xen any suggestions??? tia!!! tom

Kernel 2.6.18-53.1.13.el5 fails on network.

Hi all, After the latest lot of kernel security updates have come out, I updated one of my colo boxes and rebooted. It didn't come back up and fails when booting on: * CPU Microcode update * iptables * eth0 The booting process completes, however as you can imagine, there is no network connectivity at all. The only config changes were installing the new kernel. Booting back into 2.6.18-8.1.8.el5 make things work 100% again. The system is a dual P3 1Ghz with an e100 network card. Has anyone else come across this? Apache2 crashes, MySQL uses upto 90% CPU

Hi everyone, I am running CentOS 4.6 and use the centosplus repo. Apache version 2.0.59 and MySQL 5.0.54 and for the past few days Apache 2 has been crashing randomly. The CPU usage has been maxing out (The machine has 2 x Xeon processors, with 4Gb RAM) and there are many httpd processes that appear to be defunct. I read around and found that logrotate may be crashing Apache if it doesn't quit in time. I have performance tuned MySQL to cache queries, modified php.ini not to use too many persistent connections, restricted the number of connections that Apache will answer to. Top says: 8136 mysql 16 0 202 51:55.73 5.7 680m 225m 5352 S mysqld Is there anyone else experiencing similar things? Any suggestions? Hi, Thanks for your response on the kernel switching.I was away and could not reply immediately. Right now, I am facing a differentissue. I have to set up DNS server using BIND on Centos 4.3. When Itype the hostname on Centos, it shows: sipserver.vodcalocal.com But the cli prompt has root@sipserver~ meaning only the sipserver part of the hostname is displayed. whyis this so? What is the actual hostname then? I run a SIP server on this PC whichneeds the domainname set but whenever I type echo $DOMAIN_NAME, itshows blank and I have to export the path variable DOMAIN NAME andset it. kickstart file problem

I have a kickstart file that I am using to install multiple machines. If I install with no %post script, everything runs great. When I add the following %post section, if fails. I have been working on this for a few days now without luck, Any help would be appreciated. Here is the error, the script follows. Ah. You're not running the PAE kernel. Reboot the box, and bring up the grub menu. Choose the PAE kernel. Backing up remote system

I have an Overland Arcvault tape library, a CentOS 5 box, a Windows XP system, and RAID box that supports NFS and CIFS. The RAID box is remotely located and acts as central file storage. I might normally use dump to perform backups, but as was learned here, and on dump's man page, dump doesn't support remote file systems such as NFS or CIFS. So, for now, I've connected the library to a Windows XP system, running Service Pack 2. I have a shell script that tar gz's the directories of choice to preserve, places them in /backup, and, via samba's config of making /backup available, have it mounted as a drive letter on the XP system. I'm then using XP's built-in backup/restore program to store the contents of /backup to tape, and that is working fine for now. Is there a reliable Linux/CentOS-based way to do this, too? I know people keep saying use Amanda and/or bacula and be done with it, but in the event something goes wrong and the mysql, etc database gets corrupt, and people want their data back, it would be much easier to use a readily-available command, like cpio, tar, etc, to do the job. I've also elected to tar gz the contents ahead of time, for if I were to try and directly archive some of the files via a CIFS mount, I've experienced permission problems with various files and folders. A local tar of the files has gotten around that, then just have the Windows box copy the tar files to tape. Now to see what options tar has for producing incremental backups with a cron'ed tar job, unless someone has a better, comparable approach with existing OS tools (tar, cpio, dump, etc). I want to retain as many permissions as possible. I've tried rsync before, but that also requires enough disk space for the file copying, and some of the options I've used have complains of proper permissions being kept during the process. Question on failing hard drives

In my Cent OS machine, I have 3 hard drives, an 80, and two 200gig hard drives. One of the drives is obviously starting to fail, but I'm not sure which one. Hi List, Is there a way to limit the number of cgi processes Apache's suExec will fork for a given vhost or given user? (either solution is fine) suExec doesn't honor the /etc/security/limits.conf nproc value. mod_throttle seems to be dead; and I can't figure out if selinux might be able to manage this (although would rather not flip selinux from permissive to enabled). Hi Folks, I am running postfix on a CentOS 4 box and was playing around with mail autoresponders. I came across a wiki article that did the trick, except for the following line which is what sends the auto response: mail -s"Subject here" -a"From: <$2>" $1 < /etc/postfix/autoreply.txt The (minor) issue is that the mail command doesn't have the '-a' switch to change the sender so I just removed that part. It's not a biggie but is there an updated version of the mail command or an alternative I could use that would pick up the sender's name variable and use it? Thanks Nigel Kendrick

Thank you all for the help. I'm writing this summary message because of people requests. I haven't tried all of this. I just collected it and organized it. You've got a big storage. Now what? The short answer is: "Just connect it. It should work." I'll play safe by saying that the following applies to <10TB storage. Some people reported file systems of 80TB. Things to watch out for: - Make sure the driver you are using or the storage itself don't restrict you from making big partitions or file systems. - fdisk creates partitions up to 2.1TB in size. Use "parted" instead. - RHEL5 supports up to 8TB ext3 file system. To create bigger then 8TB use option "-F" and 4K blocks. Your options are: - If the storage is connected to a RAID controller you can use the controller to create smaller logical partitions. Then combine them with LVM. - If you really want to partition the drive use parted. While partitioning if you run into this message: === sdb: very big device. try to use READ CAPACITY(16). SCSI device sdb: 10248519680 512-byte hdwr sectors (5247242 MB) sdb: Write Protect is off === you can just ignore it. It's informational (based on a few people replies). If you don't like parted you can still use fdisk to create a few 2TB partitions and then use LVM. - Use LVM on the raw device. Don't partition. This is what I did and it worked for me. Make sure you wipe out the MBR first: dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdX bs=512 count=63 (count=1 should work too but 63 won't hurt either) Create the pv, vg and lv: pvcreate /dev/sdX vgcreate <vg name> /dev/sdX lvcreate -L <size> -n <name> -v vg_name Now you have to create the file systems. Some people recommend XFS. vncviewer and opening mail attachemtns kills the login

I am running centos 5.1 I routinely vnc in from home (centos 5.1 NVIDA laptop) to work centos 5.1 NVIDIA based station. works fine 95% of the time. However, when I am running thunderbird mail client, and there is PDF attachment, clicking on the attachment it prompts to open with evince and I accept - my entire sessions is KILLED. When I reconnect I have been logged out and all my windows etc... are gone. Is there a reason for this behavior and if so how do I stop it? Thanks, Jerry

using fping to find missing A records

I have a specific question on how to do something, and a larger question addressing other "better" ways to do the spirit of what I'm asking. I'm setting up Nagios, and am trying to make sure that all of the subnets have A records, as IP addresses will be changing very, very rapidly, and when that day comes, I will not be here (but on another Nagios project). So, I'd like to create A records for each host. How do I "fping -a" a range of IP addresses, strip out the names of the name that the host replies with, and then ping that list of names? (You don't have to tell me how exactly, a general idea of which command line tools will do) I'm thinking something like: fping -g 192.168.1.0 192.168.1.255 -A | grep whatever > file, and then shove that file in another fping statement.

Strange performance issues under CentOS 5.1

I am still running CentOS 4.6 on our production systems, but I am starting to plan the upgrade to CentOS 5.1. I have one test system running 5.1 that is the exact same hardware configuration as my 4.6 test system. One of our builds runs about 6 times slower on the 5.1 system, even though is uses less overall CPU time. upgrade from Fedora Core 5

Hi - It was recommended to me on the Fedora list that I consider upgrading to CentOS 5 from my present FC5 - the machine is used only as a light-duty CLI-only server. I have a couple of quick questions in that regard: 1. Is now a bad time to install CentOS 5, what with the root exploit out and about? Should I wait for a new kernel? 2. I just picked up a Cavalry 1TB external USB HD, the CADB001U32, which I want to use for backup purposes. I formatted it with one ext3 partition. If I load all my data onto that drive, then upgrade my main machine to CentOS 5 (which I assume will involve a complete wipe), should I then be able to mount it and retrieve the data? pvmove speed

Are there any ways to improve/manage the speed of pvmove? Man doesn't show any documented switches for priority scheduling. Iostat shows the system way underutilized even though the lv whose pe's are being migrated is continuously being written (slowly) to. Thanks! jlc

Hello our server is crashed and now some files are missing. when I do ls, I can see the file but when I do ls -la, file does not show up. I am going to do fsck, but was wondering if there is any other quick fix rather than umount and do fsck. Thanks

I need to know of my version of Postfix supports a feature, given rh version numbers don't really tell you much I was trying to find an errata on postfix or anything to let me know the real version of it. How does one deal with this scenario? Is there a source of info to determine this info? Thanks! jlc

How can I stop the eject of the DVD after install?

I have created my own install DVD with a custom kickstart file and modified the isolinux.cfg file to allow the system to boot off of the hard disk as the default mode. It will also use my kickstart file if I select it. Now I would like to make the system not eject the DVD after reboot. The machines I am installing on do not have a motorized tray that can automatically pull the DVD back in when a mount command is issued. You have to push the disk in manually. As these machines will be unattended that is not idea. How can I prevent the installer from ejecting the DVD once the install is complete? Thanks! -- Andrew Lundgren

XFCE-Terminal can't display latin1 encoding

Hi, Much of my work consists in connecting to the MySQL monitor on our public library database server and working in it. Until recently, I've been using either Gnome-Terminal in GNOME, or Konsole in KDE. Since all the systems, both server and clients, default to fr_FR.UTF-8, and MySQL uses a default latin1 charset, I usually switch the displayed charset within Gnome-Terminal or Konsole. I'm actually converting most of the desktops to XFCE, since it's my preferred desktop environment. Unfortunately, XFCE's Terminal application doesn't seen to offer the opportunity to switch to displaying an ISO-8859-1 (or ISO-8859-15) charset. Is there any other way to achieve that? Right now, all my french characters in the MySQL console appear as inverted question marks. Which leaves me with two more inverted question marks in my eyes :oD Any suggestions? Niki

Apache RPM's

Hello all, I love CentOS, but I am seriously regretting selecting Centos 4.4 for my production hosting servers. The current situation with CentOS 4.4 and being stuck at Apache 2.0.52 is a huge problem because of the new requirements for the Credit Card industry PCI scan. Apache 2.0.52 does not pass PCI compliance scans. which means no ecommerce on any of these servers - MAJOR ISSUE. So my question to the community is: when are new Apache RPM's going to be released or at minimum a backported version that plugs these security holes so we can pass PCI scans. Apache 2.0.52 has some major issues that need to be dealt with? Help us out here. I know I am not the only one in this situation. every hosting company that uses Ensim Pro X is just where I am. Any insight or better yet a solution to this would be great.

I don't think that is the "harmless" error message mentioned in the release notes as that had to do with the "crash kernel". I saw this same error on a Dell AMD system. It seems the motherboard in that system didn't do ACPI IRQ routing as the kernel expected and experienced a lot of random problems until "acpi=noirq" was passed as a kernel option to disable ACPI IRQ routing defaulting back to the APIC IRQ routing.
