Just kernel-headers and kernel-devel (or kernel-(foo-)devel) packages.

Apache 2.2 on CentOS 5 and name-based SSL virtual hosts?

name-based virtual hosts with SSL (*) work fine with Apache 2.0 on CentOS 4 and I know from someone that he uses a self-compiled Apache 2.2 on CentOS 4 and this works fine for him as well. So, Apache 2.2 should still have this functionality. But testing this on CentOS 5 with the Apache 2.2 coming with it is not working for me. Has anyone tested this already? Does it work for you? I fear the build for RHEL/CentOS 5 may be missing a build parameter or so that is necessary to enable this. (*) using the same wildcard certificate for all SSL virtual hosts on the same IP-no:port combination, of course. nmbd dead but pid file exists

I'm having a lot of problems with nmbd quitting while I'm working. 'service smb status' shows samba running, but 'nmbd dead but pid file exists'. Log files show lines like nmbd/nmbd.c:reload_interfaces(229) reload_interfaces: No subnets to listen to. Shutting down... Googling hasn't come up with anything helpful. Has anyone any idea what is happening and what I can do about it? Anne

Flushing RAM contents?

A user wants to time a command/program/application and ensure the full contents of that command's data management has been flushed from RAM/cache and saved to disk. Is there a way to ensure the cache/RAM is flushed to disk, or is the flushing a function of the kernel or the application? This happens to be on a 64-bit Intel system with 64-bit CentOS 5, fully patched. But even if the system were an out-of-box 64-bit install, unpatched, would it make a difference? Thanks. Scott

Folding@Home

Hi, I seem to not be able to connect to the folding site and receive new work. Anyone else having this issue? Port 8080 is open as well as the other web ports on the firewall. I can ping the host but get nothing when I open a web browser to it. Anyone else having the same issues? Network Installation of CentOS disk image via PXE

Hello all, I've deployed new servers - installing new CentOS servers via PXE booting using its iso distribution stored on an NFS server. For certain server types; I'd like to install custom applications into a server and then generate an image of that server, and deploy again via PXE to another group of servers. Wanted to find out if anyone can forward any pointers to papers or links on: 1. Best and (cheapest) way to create disk image (that can be used for over the network installation over PXE) of an existing CentOS server with all its custom apps and packages ... would this be dd? would this take a long time? 2. Would like to find out if you can point me to a guide or doc - that specifically describes this process; most PXE install notes out there describe the PXE config setup and assumes an ISO image (to create a new server), as opposed to deploying a "ghosted" image of an existing server. 3. In a deployment of a "ghosted" image - would the DHCP automatically request for a new IP address upon completion of the installation on the target machine (since when I ghost the source machine, the network information will contain that source's machine IP address, MAC, etc. etc.) Thanks in advance .. -- best, Vince

NFS Exporting / not working ???

I'm fairly certain I'm not losing my mind, but.... I'm a very recent convert from fedora 7 to Centos 5. I had the / filesystem exported and it worked fine. Installed Centos, dropped the very same exports file I was using successfully into /etc, restarted nfs, and it won't allow anyone to access. If you mount it from a different system, the mount succeeds, but no files or directories show up and the ls just sort of dies a slow death. I managed to get it to work with samba, but nfs just won't happen. What am I missing? Turning Wireless Radio on and off: how?

Hi all, I've got a Dell Inspiron 1501 with a Broadcom 1390 Wlan mini card (integrated) wireless lan chipset. I've got an init script setup to activate the wireless connection at boot time, however when the system boots the adapter doesn't connect. I'm not able to get a connection until after the desktop is done loading and I run the script from the command line. After some log review apparently as the system is booting the radio for the wireless lan card is "off", so I need to know how to turn the wireless radio on just before the init script for the adapter fires off. How can I turn on/off the wireless lan radio? I'm using ndiswrapper and the dell windows driver for this wireless card. thanks, Mark

Hello List, I have a few intel centos 3.9 boxes with perl-5.8.0-94.EL3 installed. This seems like a very early version of 5.8 perl. centos 4.6 has 5.8.1. Would it be sensible to just upgrade to this rpm? I want a stable platform for cgi. I suppose I could just try it, but these boxes are under a form of change control and I think I should ask for advice before going that route. Many thanks for any advice, Tony

Trouble Ticket System

Hi, Last year, I tried to installed and evaluate the following OSS web base trouble ticketing system. This is for me to track history on our IT related issues. Those that I tried are the PHP Ticket, DanPHPSupport, Epix Power Support, ruQueue, Ticket Express, OTRS, PMOS Help Desk and eTicket. From those, PMOS and eTicket are my top picks. I have problem installing OTRS the last time, so I am unable to evaluate that but will try later. The problem with PMOS is that the developer want to give up the project last time I checked. Aside from the mentioned above, can you suggest others that are better. Any advice from other experiences please. One reason why there seem to be few RHEL reports is that RHEL5 is not that widely available yet but lots of vulnerable Fedora/Debian installations are available.

tar: no, the file did not change while you read it

CentOS 5.1, i686. I have a directory, say "foo", containing several hundred directories down to about six levels deep, and about 33,000 files. Periodically I make a tar archive of the whole lot: tar cf foo.tar foo and I often get from a few dozen to several hundreds of: tar: XXXXX: file changed as we read it followed by an exit status of zero. I am absolutely sure (100%, positive) that no files were changed during the period that tar was running: some of the files that are often flagged as changed have not been modified in many months, and have only been read by tar and the backup system. If I immediately repeat the tar command, it may succeed without any of these messages or flag a different set of files as changed, when again they have not. I'm sure from Googling that many have seen this. The system does also run Samba and the file system on which these files are resident is accessible from Windows clients, but none of these particular files are ever used from the Window side. The file system is also NFS exported, but again the files are not in use on any NFS client. What is interesting (that is, suspicious) is that on upgrading (clean install) the system from a previous incarnation of CentOS 4.6 (which also exhibited the problem) to CentOS 5.1, keeping the same tar version (1.15.1) and making no hardware changes, the incidence of these messages has _hugely_ increased. I have also seen a couple of repeated instances of "stat <file>" return changed times that differ from one another, and in all cases the file has not changed at all: the difference in the reported change times is always exactly 5 hours (which is my offset from UTC). I can't reproduce that at will. If anyone has a clue stick to beat me with, please do; it's getting a little old. Steve

CentOS 5.1 php-curl

I have two boxes nearly identical. I must have a package installed on one and not on the other. I cannot run a php-curl statement on one, and the other I can. Doing a google I find that I simply need to install php-common. According to box that does not work php-common is installed. What did I miss?

We did something very similar to what you're asking about in #1 and #2 where I used to work. I used the setup for installing on systems but someone else did the initial setup. You need to look at two things: PXE and custom kickstart. I think Red Hat has some guidance on how to set up both. If not, Google. The idea is that the system that needs to get an installation is set to "boot from LAN" in the BIOS and the PXE server is also setup as a DHCP server on the same LAN segment. The system being installed does a normal boot from LAN which contacts the DHCP/PXE server. The DHCP/PXE server provides the boot image using tftp from the first install CD and a kickstart file. The kickstart file controls the installation as to which apps get installed. The setup we used let us pick from several different possible kickstart files for different configurations so there's room for customizing the process. Hopefully, that's enough of a start in the right direction that you can Google for the details. As to #3, the idea is to have the source of the ghost image setup for DHCP booting and not be bound to a particular network card (HWADDR in the ifcfg-ethX file). Create a Yum repository for CentOS 5?

Hi, I'm using CentOS 5.1 on both server and desktops. I have a series of packages that I either rebuilt from CentOS SRPMS to modify them according to my needs (PHP for example), or that I built from Fedora Core SRPMS because they're not available on CentOS nor in the RPMForge repos (Seamonkey, MPD with libshout support, xmms-wma, ...). I want to create my own remote Yum repository for these packages, but I don't quite know how to achieve that. I've done something similar with Slackware and swaret before, though, so I sort of grasp the logic behind it. Is it possible to do that on a remote server where I only have FTP access? E. g. somehow create the repo locally on one build box, copy the whole tree over to the remote machine and then add some according file/stanza in /etc/yum.repos.d/ ? cheers, Niki

Apart of mrrepo tool, I see that I can use reposync from yum-utils package and yum-rhn-plugin package to setup a mirror update server. But I can't to find yum-rhn-plugin under centos5 repo. Hi, I just wonder if I can replace PIX firewall with machine having IPTable as my firewall. I want to control our firewall but due to the lack of knowledge in configuring PIX, i want to replace it with Linux or BSD. I do not have the time now to learn the complexity of PIX and yet I want to know what happening in my firewall and control it as much as possible. Do you think it is justifiable for me to replace it? Can you please provide me your inputs? CentOS 5.1 Core 2 Duo Install freezes

Alrighty. I'm having a hell of a time and I need help. I'll try to give as much information as possible. ---------- HARDWARE ---------- MB: Supermicro PDSBM-LN2+ Intel 946GZ ICH7R + Intel® 82573 Memory: Crucial 512Mb, 1Gb, 2Gb modules matched to above MB. Processors: Intel Celeron 420 Conroe-L, 1.6GHz 512KB 64-bit Intel Core 2 Duo E6320, 1.86Ghz 4Mb 64-bit Intel Pentium E2140 Allendale (Dual Core), 1.6GHz 1M 64-bit Hard Disks: Various Western Digital and Seagate SATA Drives ---------- ---------- BIOS (Rev 1.0 as well as Rev 1.0a) ---------- Disabled Native Mode Disabled Native Mode with ACPI Enabled SATA Native Mode ---------- KERNEL PARAMS (singularly and combination) ---------- acpi=off, pci=nommconf, pci=bios, nohz=off, noapic, nolapic, pci=routeirq, maxcpus=1 ---------- ATA_PIIX loads at startup, sometimes ACPI depending on my BIOS settings. Always after verifying dependencies, and typically during the disk format process, the installation freezes. I get a "kernel panic - not syncing" in text mode. Single disks, dual disks, LVM, no-LVM, software RAID, even when disks are on a Promise SATA300-TX4. The single-core Celeron processors work fine, but none of the dual core processors work. I'm using 5 sets of hardware, so bad hardware is unlikely. I'm stumped. Anyone out there with similar problems and/or workarounds? Any ideas? -Ken

resolv.conf question

Hello, I have a centos 4.6 system acting as a router for my local network. I obtain my eth0 IP address automatically via DHCP from my ISP, sc.rr.com. If I add 127.0.0.1 to resolv.conf, it won't save it. I tried adding this to my dhclient.conf lease { option domain-name-servers 127.0.0.1; } The above is the only entry in the file. Don't know it caused it but my system locked up 3 times since adding this. Deleted the file and its fine. Any help would be appreciated. --Eddie

Xvnc from tightvnc crashing

Hi all, I am having issues with running tightvnc-server on a CentOS 5.1 x86_64 machine (currently up-to-date, kernel 2.6.18-53.1.6.el5). Occasionally, the Xvnc instance will just crash, taking with it everything that I was running. When it crashes, it seems to do so when I try to open some GUI program. So, for instance, I click on a shortcut to open a program, and poof, it crashes. But it does not crash every time. At times it is usable for a long time. I believe tightvnc is available from rpmforge. $ rpm -qa | grep tightvnc tightvnc-server-1.3.9-1.el5.rf tightvnc-1.3.9-1.el5.rf Is anyone else using tightvnc? Is anyone having any trouble with it? Any ideas how to troubleshoot this? Disk partitions and LVM limits

Hi, I've got a DAS DELL MD1000 with a bunch of SATA drives in RAID 5 configuration with total space of 5.4TB. This box is attached to a CentOS5 system (kernel 2.6.18-53.1.6.el5). Any idea how to make this space usable? Is there a limit how big a partition can be? What is the work around? Is there a limit how big a file system ca be? I've tried to partition it but no matter how bug partition I create fdisk spits out these messages on the console: --- sdb: very big device. try to use READ CAPACITY(16). SCSI device sdb: 10248519680 512-byte hdwr sectors (5247242 MB) sdb: Write Protect is off --- I decided to not partition the drive and use LVM but the physical volume stopped at 2TB. So, right now I can't use LVM because of this 2TB limit and I'm not sure if I partition the drive how good these partitions are because of the the message from fdisk. Any help or idea is highly appreciated. Reg. Kernel switching

Hi all, I am a newbie to linux and this is my first mail to this group. We have a PC running Centos version 2.6.9-42.0.2.EL. I needed to load a router software called Nistnet and it would not run properly. It is looking for RTC (Real Time clock) support as a module. I 've gone through the LKM Loadable Kernel module support under Documentation pages of Linux.org and did the following: located the kernel release: uname -r 2.6.9-42.0.2.EL next navigated to the /usr/src/kernels/2.6.9-42.0.2.EL-i686 (this is where the kernel is located on this PC) then issued a make menuconfig command It took me to through the menu and under device drivers> character device drivers i chose the Real time clock support as a module. Then exited out of the menu and did make modules_install. Then rebooted. However, the PC while rebooting showed some messages like fast_rtc: lost around 26 interrupts at 8192Hz. this keeps on appearing on the screen for a while before reboot and after the system reboots, I see that at boot time, the ethernet interface does not come up. It gives the follwoing error: Device eth0 has a different MAC address than expected, ignoring. Also i get the following error messages : Cannot open /lib/modules/2.6.9-42.0.2.EL/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/ microcode.ko no such file or directory and cannot open lib/modules/2.6.9-42.0.2.EL/kernel/drivers/net/sunrpc/sunrpc.ko no such file or directory. if I do an updatedb command and then slocate microcode.ko, I still see it under this directory. However, if I navigate to the kernel directory under 2.6.9-42.0.2.EL , there is nothing under it. If i issue ls -al there are a totoal of 16 entries but I cant see them. Can any one please tell me how to revert back to the original configuration or to undo these changes? I have copied the config-2.6.9-42.0.-EL release from Centos site to the /boot thinking it would revert to the original default config. Then I rebooted the PC but I still get the error-Eth interface has a different MAC id than expected or unable to bring eth0 up. So, at the boot time, I am currently choosing the kernel version 2.6.9-32-EL. With this I am able to browse the Internet. But I want to make the version 2.6.9-42-EL up. Please some one help me!! Hi all, I am trying to install the PPPoe server rp-pppoe-3.8 from Roaring penguin on centos PC (Centos 4.3, Kernel release 2.6.9-34.EL) but not able to start it. kickstart install NVIDIA binary driver

Hi all, I am wanting to add to my working kickstart post section grabbing the NVIDIA binary and installing it. I can grab the file thats not the problem. I can use the --x-module-path to pass to the binary installer... however, How do I get the correct module path, kernels are added the the yum update, and a new one comes along and wish to account for that. What is the correct way to know which path to provide to the installer. Process is in kickstart post: yum -u update copy NVIDIA binary init 3 install the NVIDIA binary with either the current kernel module path or if yum update grabbed a new kernel then use that module path.. Also is there anyway in the post section to do do a "CTRL+ALT+F3" Thanks, Jerry

Changing ext3 Partition Size

I have an ext3 partition from our SAN. The size was increased. I am attempting to re-size this specific ext3 partition, obviously. I unmount the partition, run fdisk, change the cyls, and save... WARNING: Re-reading the partition table failed with error 22: Invalid argument. The kernel still uses the old table. The new table will be used at the next reboot. And that is the message that I receive after I attempt the save. I did attempt a reboot to see if it did anything, but it did not help. Thanks, Scott

I tried a few of them. They didn't solve the problem, but they did help me find it. When I tried to run the install without LVM, I still got the same anaconda crash (referencing vgremove). I realized that anaconda was trying to remove the volume groups that already existed on the drives. Security help desperately needed

I need to have the following services from my server: imap - mostly by lan, but occasionally external file and print serve samba access - read and write to some directories The problems I'm seeing are inconsistent, making it difficult to know how to find the source. Samba access is essential to me. I use a server-based korganizer, and without samba it's inaccessible. Sometimes it is working, sometimes it isn't. Last night, in desperation, I turned off selinux and the firewall so that I could finish a job, intending to get it sorted this morning. (There is a router firewall, so while security was diminished it was not totally absent.) This morning my laptop cannot make any samba connections at all.
