Rebuilding PHP: how do I manage updates?

Hi, Our public library management software (PMB) runs on Apache/PHP/MySQL. It requires some additional PHP modules to run correctly, namely: 1) php-gd 2) php-yaz 3) php-xslt I've googled and fiddled around quite a bit, and come to the following conclusions: 1) php-gd can be installed from extra repos (rpmforge IIRC), so this one's no problem. 2) To install php-yaz, I have to install the yaz library first. To do this, I download the FC6 SRPM for yaz from www.indexdata.dk, it builds without any problem, and I install the resulting libyaz3 and libyaz3-devel. Then, I can install the according PHP module with a simple 'pecl install yaz'. 3) Apparently, there's no php-xslt module around. AFAIK, the only way to have it is to build it into PHP. So I went and downloaded the PHP SRPM from one of the CentOS mirrors. I edited php.spec and added the following configure option in php.spec: --with-xslt-sablot After installing a myriad of build dependencies, I launched 'rpmbuild -bb --clean php.spec', and after a while, I got my /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386 directory chock-full with resulting PHP packages. I uninstalled everything I already had PHP-wise, like this: yum remove `rpm qa | grep php` Then I simply installed my resulting RPMS like this: rpm -ivh php-*.rpm I checked the PHP information page (with phpinfo()), and every module needed by my application was there. Now I wonder: how will I manage security and/or bugfix updates for PHP and its modules in the future? When simply issuing 'yum update', any update to php will squash my rebuilt version, and PMB will become dysfunctional. My first idea would be: see if there are available updates, and in that case, download the according SRPM, rebuild and reinstall the whole thing. But that sounds a bit tedious. Or simply put a line in /etc/yum.conf: exclude=php php-* ??? Any suggestions? Niki

centos 5.0/5.1 nfs kickstart

Hi all, I'm having a bit of trouble with something and was wondering if anyone else has encountered this or knows what the problem is. I have one computer I would like to kickstart a centos 5.0 or 5.1 install. I have another computer which is the tftpboot server and contains the centos 5.0 and centos 5.1 install directories I wish to do the kickstart over nfs and my network is using MTU of 4500. The machine will kickstart to the point of fetching the kickstart script from the server, but soon after stop responding. The machine is not locked but seems to be waiting on network traffic. Are there any known issues with kickstarting over nfs with jumbo frames? Thanks! Adam

question on "cp -f" on centos 5.1

When I issue the command cp -af --reply=yes * ../other it tells me --reply is deprecated and use -i or -f. when I remove the --reply=yes I have to indicate 'y' to every file being copied. I just want to copy every file in my current directory to another directory and overwrite any file that is there. What is the correct way to do that? Jerry

boot slow at "Applying ip6tables firewall rules"

I have a fairly vanilla install of Centos5 on a desktop box (with a Broadcom NetXtreme BCM5752 Gigabit NIC). When booting, the boot process hangs at "Applying ip6tables firewall rules" for 30-60 seconds before proceeding, which is annoying. I have not tried to turn off ipv6 networking. I guess I could, but is this slowness to be expected? Is it waiting for some ipv6 response? Thanks, Dan

EDAC error

Hello, I upgraded to CentOS 5.1 and everything went smoothly (Thanks for the awesome work!). But after rebooting, I get the following error: EDAC MC: Ver: 2.0.1 Nov 30 2007 EDAC e7xxx: error reporting device not found:vendor 8086 device 0x2541 (broken BIOS?) I found http://edacbugs.buttersideup.com/show_bug.cgi?id=21 with google but no solution. Is it safe to ignore the error or remove the EDAC module? I read their wiki but I'm new to this and I don't want to break anything? Please advice on what to do next? Thank you so much. dianne

I am running Centos 5 64 bit. For somer reason i cannot get the windows client to connect to the server. The port is set to 904 as per the install but when i try to connect to the server i get the error the machine is actively refusing it. I do not have a firewall on and the apache server and everything else is running. I can check the status webpage in my browser just fine. Hi all, I need to backup two xen server hosts with several lvm partitions to store xen guests data (all guests are para-virtualized CentOS guests). My intention it is to do a full backup of lvm2 partition where SO resides ( I don't have created lvm2 partitions with snapshot option). Will this procedure works? No sound after hibernate

Hello, if I hibernate my notebook, suspend to disk in package hibernate-tuxonice-1.97-1cubbi2, with CentOS 5 and Kde 3.5.8 the sound isn't working any more after waking it up. So I try to disable the sound modules in /etc/hibernate/blacklisted-modules, but this failes with a 'Some modules failed to unload' error message. Dear All, If I want make a lan users (with private IP) can access the internet just after passing the verification, what options do I have? What I want is: * If I user want to access the internet * He (must) run the browser * whatever the address he typed on the address bar, he will be brought to the verification location, which will be 'force' him to enter his username and password * if he passed the verification the internet access is available for him, but if not the internet keep unavailable for him. Slightly OT: Creative Zen not showing up when plugged in - what to do

I installed the 0.2.5 version of libmtp, ran the hotplug.sh script (which has a bug in it, but it's only for "old" hotplug support), the player shows up in lsusb, BUT gnomad2 can't seem to find it. What am I missing? Thanks. mhr

WPA question

HI I admit up front that I know just enough about wireless networking to know that I don't know much at all about it. That said, I'm hoping someone can help me learn a little bit... Specifically, could a laptop running Centos 5.1 be expected to (be able to) connect to a wireless access point using WPA2 security settings? I don't know if WPA depends on hardware support, or if it'll work on any ole machine. Nor do I know what is involved in making it happen. Clues would be appreciated. Two Instances of Apache; Primary IP / Secondary IP

Tried the apache group, and no response. Thought I'd try here. I have set up a development environment so that it mimics a production environment. The production environment has a proxy server (apache 2.x) that sends requests onto another back-end apache server, and of course the proxy server serves up pages sent by the back-end. All that works fine. However, in my development environment, I thought that I'd set up a separate instance of apache on the same server, and add a secondary IP address on the same interface. The proxy apache instance listens on the secondary IP, and the back-end instance listens on the primary IP. When I send a client request to the proxy, I get a blank page. When I check the logs, the back-end shows requests coming from the primary IP, and not the secondary IP. My conclusion is that the proxy is sending its outbound traffic on the primary IP address, not the secondary IP address it's listening on. That in turn means that back-end is sending its pages back on the primary IP instead of the secondary, and that means the proxy instance isn't receiving answers to its request. I know that BIND can be configured to send requests on secondary IP addresses. Can Apache? Is there something I can do with routing tables that can help? === Al

Hi all, I want to use UP2DATE to alert me to updates that are available but still use yum to make the update. Up2date alerts me and i see what is available and then update with yum. Problem installing the 53.1.6 kernel

On top of my previously (just now) difficulties with yum, now I find that the 53.1.6 kernel is not installing properly. Rpm also thinks it is installed. I can remove it with rpm -e, but then rpm -ivh won't install it either. It also hangs, at the same point. Here's what I see when I type ^C: error: %post(kernel-2.6.18-53.1.6.el5.x86_64) scriptlet failed, signal 2 (Yes, I know, signal 2 is SIGINT, which is what ^C does.) BUT rpm thinks it has installed the kernel even though the /boot partition has not been updated and the grub.conf file also does not show it. Any constructive assistance would be appreciated. mhr

daytime service on port 13

Unable to log out normally

I've posted this question to the Gnome users list, but so far no luck, so I thought I'd mention this here. A little while ago, I noticed that I was no longer able to log out from my GDM. I'm running the default GDM (2.16) that comes with CentOS, and this problem started up right about the same time that I updated to the 53.1.4 kernel (from the 8.1.15 version). As I've posted here recent;y, I was unable to use yum to install the 53.1.6 kernel until I rebooted to the 53.1.4 default kernel (I run a modified kernel that has NTFS support built in as a module with read/write support.) However, I was not only unable to log out using the System->LogOut applet, I was also unable to shut down or reboot using the System->Shutdown applet. This has also occurred since rebooting to the 53.1.6 stock kernel and my own 53.1.6 kernel with NTFS. What happens is that I either click on the Log Out or Shutdown applet, and if I click on the relevant button (Log Out, Shutdown or Reboot), the applet freezes. I can't cancel it or change options (in the case of the shutdown applet), but if I click on the close window button (upper right hand corner), after a moment or two, the "not responding" window pops up and I can kill the applet. (Thsi also happens if I just let the applet time out - it freezes then, too.) The only way I have been able to log out is to kill my gnome-session. To reboot, I can run "reboot" in a terminal window, or log out (by killing the gnome session) and then click on the "Reboot" link at the bottom of the login screen. I confess that I have downloaded and installed a few third-party packages, but I got most of them via rpmforge, CentOS (Fedora) Extras and SourceForge. The only thing that I find really suspicious in all of these is that I tried to install k9copy and it refused to install due to too many missing parts, but I did manage to install a number of KDE pieces - could they be interfering? Also, IIRC, the problem began before that, so I'm in a quandary here. Part of the problem is that I rarely log out, so I'm not 100% sure of exactly when this started or what I last installed that might have triggered it. (BTW, how do I view that?) Suggestions? Wisdom? Timing a command

I want to keep track of how long a task is running. Thinking it wouldn't take that long, I opted not to run time before it. The fact that it is taking a long time, if I revisit the machine in the morning, what would be the best way to find out what time it ended? In this case, I'm using mt to erase an lto3 tape - sudo mt -f /dev/st0 erase. But I'd like to use the knowledge from this question to track other events, too. I feel like I should know this answer, but cannot think of the solution at the moment. Thanks. Scott

Yum update fails on perl-gettext

I have a new dell t105(opty 1210's with 4 gigs of ram..sata hdd's and sata dvd-rom). I can bot to the Cent 5 64 bit dvd fine but once it asks where the install image is i tell it cd-rom..then it rejects the dvd spits it out and tells me it's not there. the same happens on 32 bit. I have downloaded centos5 twice now, md5 verified..and even burned at 1x(that took forever). Are you trying to install the 64-bit or the 32-bit? While the install is running, some of the other virtual consoles display logs and error information. What do those show when the install rejects your disk? My apologies if this is a bit off topic... I am going to start doing backups to removable hard drives and I will need to send these hard drives to an off-site storage facility. I am looking for some way to protect the drives after I pull them out of the system. I was hoping to find some kind of clamshell enclosure similar to what is used with external hard drives, but so far I haven't found anything. Do you guys know of anything like this? How do you protect your removable drives when they are not in the computer? -- Bowie

I have used fetchmail/procmail/postfix/dovecot/kmail for some time on my mail server, and have set this up on three or four machines in the past. I'm now setting up a new server and having problems. I've reached the thinking-in-circles stage, so need a prompt. The box in question is called borg2.lydgate.lan, and resides at 192.168.0.40. I can ping both borg2.lydgate.lan and 192.168.0.40, yet kmail tells me that it cannot connect to it, either by name or ip. /etc/hosts has correct lines for the box. It has to be something pretty basic, but I can't think what, unless it is either an selinux problem or ipv6 problem. I know that in FC6 I turned ipv6 off (I'd have to search to find how to do that again). Anne

Problems with yum not updating properly

Has anyone else seen this? I recently got the announcement about the xorg 1.5 update being available, so I ran yum update to get it. To my surprise, I found that yum did not see it at all. With some help from Karanbir (thanks again), we decided there might be something wrong with my repo path, so I checked it against the older one I had from 5.0 (which I saved, for some reason) and found that the new ones did not have protect or enable commands in them, so I added them to match my 5.0 ones. Yum suddenyl found the xorg 1.5 updates and installed them. But now, yum can't see the wireshark update, and although I probably don't need it since I don't use that (AFAIK), yum does not see that one, but suddenly it sees a kernel update (2.6.18-53.1.6). Anyone have a clue why this might be (or what I should post here to help clera it up)? Intel (brand) Penryn (8xxx) motherboard which works natively with CentOS 4/5?

Has anyone stumbled across an Intel brand motherboard which both works with the 8000 series of CPUs and with CentOS 4/5 out of the box? (by works I mean the NIC/Disk controllers without "fudgery") The DG31 board "kind of" works but unfortunately it has 2 DIMM slots, the realtek NIC isn't supported (don't know why, its just a standard realtek NIC, although it might be some new PCI-E one). Has anyone found the "Holy Grail" yet? Please let me know :) -Drew

Breaking Windows XP user password?

Granted this is not a UNIX system, but in case there is a UNIX tool to accomplish the goal... I am looking for a bootable CD/DVD (or application to be placed on a CD/DVD to be made bootable) that can let me mount a Windows XP drive/partition (SP1 or SP2), and force-crack the admin password (even if admin account name has been changed, but I know what it has been changed to). The application cannot write to the hard drive - only mount it read-only, read the password file into ram, and show the cracked password. I know I can use the pnordahl utility to try and force-change the password, but I actually want to crack it. The utility should be free. This is a legal request. Thanks for leads. Scott
