You can enable auditing to determine if the files are disappearing due to human/machine intervention (audit file system deletes) or if it is due to file system corruption (files disappear and no delete audits recorded). Shearing file systems on the network

I have 4 systems and each one of them has a partition I'd like to be remotely accessible on the other 3 systems. In other words System1 has Partition1. Systems 2,3,4 should be able to remotely mount Partition1 from System1. Also System2 has Partition2. Then systems 1,3,4 should be able to remotely mount Partition2 from System2 and so on. I tried NFS and it works but only in the ideal world. If one of the systems goes down the whole NFS cross-mounting makes the other systems somewhat unstable. It's a known issue and I believe you guys are aware of it but I just had to see it myself. What would you recommend? What is the best practice for doing that? Unfortunately SAN and NAS are not really an option due to some financial restructions. I'm thinking SMB...? Would that work? Thank you Peter

Why Kudzu, Why?

So I have a CentOS 5 machine, which I recently did a 'yum update' on. Everything went fine, but I rebooted as a precaution (just to confront any problems which might arise the first time after an update). And sure enough, when the machine came back up, the network didn't work. Luckilly, someone said (and I quote) 'mv /etc/sysconfig/networking-scripts/ifcfg-eth0.bak /etc/sysconfig/networking-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and blame kudzu'... So, what did I do wrong, or what should I have done differently? What's the reasoning behind this? I'll bet there is some rationale, and I'd like to understand it. Thanks, Mike

Interesting PXE server setup question

While this is not a problem with CentOS I am hoping to solve the situation using a CentOS machine. For anyone not interested I am sorry to clutter your mail box. For everyone else any ideas or suggestions are welcome. A bit of background: We have an application that runs only in DOS 6.22 at the moment that we would like to run on all of our desktop computers each time they boot up. Our workstations are mostly Windows XP with some Linux. Our goals: We would like to be able to have the machines boot into DOS and run the application and then reboot to the normal hard drive. We would like to have it require no user intervention or as little as possible. We would also like to have it only run the app during the first boot up of the day. Thoughts at the moment: One idea we have at the moment is to create a PXE server with the DOS boot image on it. (I have done that before using Windows RIS but we are trying to avoid a windows Server as RIS is a bit of a pain and it prefers user interaction. It also would not fit well with our solution to have it only run once a day.) We could then run the application and inside the DOS image we could have it reboot the machine. We could then set the client machines to boot PXE as their first boot option. The next thought was to somehow watch the connections to the tftp server where the boot image will be kept and watch for the client IP then have the PXE server create a new firewall rule that would block access from that client to tftp. The thought there is that once the client has downloaded the boot image once it will run it and then on reboot will not be able to find the boot image and, I think, would fail at the pxe boot and move on to the next item in the boot list. Then every midnight the list of blocked IPs would be cleared and we start the process over again. So any suggestions on the best way to take a bootable DOS disk and turn it into an image that a Linux based PXE server can serve, ways to monitor the tftp connections and then add them to the firewall after they have finished downloading the boot image, and any ideas on any better ideas would be appreciated. I received some interesting answers to my cron question. Most people said it was not possible. One person reviewed cron's source code and said the source would need to be modified. One person said I should mount the filesystem with noexec. I'll review and test the answers as best I can. To answer several people's curiosities of why I keep pushing - when I'm tasked with a quest, I try to tap all my resources, including this list, to find a solution. One never knows when an answer might be obvious, or perplexing, as this question seems to have been. To some, an answer is obvious. To others, it is perplexing. It all depends on each person's level of knowledge. The more one learns, the more things can become more obvious. Thus, we grow. In the end, like now, I try to provide my findings, and, if valid, may be of benefit to others. I try not to wear out the list, but do what the list was created for - discussion and inquiry of UNIX and related topics. This question proved to test people's knowledge, and I did get some good feedback. Thanks to all, and until the next adventure... Scott

Recommend a mini or nano ITX system for Centos

I am looking into convising the boss to get me a mini-itx system to replace my workhorse notebook (I have to have a corp notebook and I can remote terminal into a Centos server from it). So I have been playing with one mini-itx system (the decTOP) and am looking at my options. I want a fast processor, 1Gb memory, LAN, 4USB, VGA. Wireless and bluetooth optional USB dongles along with a second LAN interface). PCI slot optional (for said wireless, bluetooth or LAN!). Smallest footprint and power draw are the other key factors. As well as being able to run Centos and maybe also being able to go into memory or swap suspend! External power supply so I can use an alternate battery powerpak on the road. It would be soooo neat if I could put it in a pocket! The nano-itx boards almost make that possible. For a drive I would be using either a 8gb CF micro harddrive or perhaps an ipod drive with an IDE interface (something I have to learn more about). So what do you know about nano and mini ITX compatiblity to Centos. And complete systems?

Why iptables are not working?

Amanda oddity (amcheck)

I'm slowly getting everything back to normal here after swapping motherboards on my server. I also took the opportunity to bring the server up to CentOS 5. I'm still getting services working but I have one oddity with amanda. Hot swapping sata drives

I have a two external USB drives only 1 is connected to centos 5.1 at a time. the USB drive is SLOW compared to SATA. The external drive suppots both connections USB and SATA. I bought a little $5 external SATA connector that goes into the PCI slot area (does not actually take a PCI slot just the backpanel) and just plugs back into one of the available SATA ports on the motherboard. When I turn off the external drive and put the other drive on the connection and then power on will SATA handle that automatically? Is there a command I need to run to tell it check for new disks? HA software advice

We are in need of some very basic software that will give us the ability to swing an ip address from one host to another during controlled maintenance or host failure. For now the IP address will be the only resource that is shared and there will never be a need for shared storage. Eventually we may want to monitor processes for health (probably just read in pid file) and it would be great if the recommended software had this ability as well but not completely necessary. The process monitoring part is just me trying to think ahead but it definitely wouldn't be needed in the near future. Ideally, this should be light weight user land code that hopefully already comes easily with the distribution :) Any suggestions? Thanks.

Had to POWER OFF CentOS 5.1!

I was running a simple script and the system became unresponsive. I went to the console and couldn't get it to respond, so I had to POWER OFF! Ugh! Wireless DELL M90 with CentOS 5.1

Hi, I have a laptop DELL M90 with an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG card. After installed new rpm drivers (see below), my card is recognized and I can see my wireless acces point with (iwlist - iwconfig) but it's impossible to connect to it. It seem that I can't obtain an IP address. In the log message I have "dhclient : DHCPDISCOVER on eth1 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval ) The same laptop installed in Windows XP connect imediatly to my wireless acces point. Other Windows XP laptops can connect immediatly so. My laptop is installed with CentOS 5.1 - kernel 2.6.18-53.el5 Any help ? Best Regards. Automount of USB drives

Hi, I am using 5.1, Until yesterday morning when we had a power cut for 9 hours [no proper UPS], the automount of USB drives worked properly. Now when I connect any USB drive [hard drives & USB sticks], they show up in dmesg, and they are being properly recognized, but I have to mount them by hand. MySQL and charsets: latin1 vs. utf8

Hi, Our public library management software (PMB) is currently running on a Slackware Linux 12.0 server, with Apache, PHP, MySQL and a few PHP modules. I'm considering migrating it to CentOS 5.1, because it would be easier to maintain for updates, and for various other reasons. Slackware is one of the rare distros that does not default to an utf8 system locale. The default is en_US, and since I use a french system, I chose fr_FR@euro for localization. There's a caveat in /etc/profile.d/lang.sh, justifying the choice of latin1 over utf8, so I complied to that. When working with PMB, I often go under the hood, open up a MySQL console and isse SQL statements from there. The app itself seems to favour latin1 over utf8. For example, when doing a backup database dump, the resulting dumpfile will be iso-8859-1. Now, as expected, I'm having some charset woes with CentOS. I've re-read the MySQL Reference Manual, the section concerning localization, which leaves me more confused than before. Asked in the forums there, but to no avail. So my next thought was to ask here. We only use french charset here, nothing else, so there's no need for utf8-support in our database. Only I noticed that when I set the system locale to french latin1, I get some weird results in the system messages. Is there any way to keep the system in utf8, and at the same time make MySQL behave like it was latin1-only? I don't quite know how to formulate it, so I'll try to give a description of what I would like to have. - My system is still defaulting to LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8 - SQL batch files are all ISO-8859-1 - I want to open GNOME Terminal, fire up the MySQL monitor, run the batchfile ( mysql> source /path/to/batchfile.sql) and then be able to issue sql statements with table contents (french special chars like é, à , ç, è) displaying correctly. Any suggestion for this? Niki PS: encoding issues are a quite humiliating experience

Maybe that could help you The other way is, that you call iptables With the full path "/sbin/iptables". That Should also work well if you don't want To edit .bash_profile (why ever). machine responsiveness with centos 5.1

every other day I do full backups to both a second internal disk and an external usb disk. I am using a fully up to date centos 5.1 AMD 64 X2 6400+ machine. with SATA disks. using an NVIDIA chipset, when I do a full rsync the responsiveness of my machine suffers. Slow on the internal disk and really slow on external usb. doing "top" shows 0% idle but only 17% CPU usage by the rsync command. I am stunned that a 6400+ machine dual core can get this sluggish when doing a copy to disk. Is there something I potentially have not set right? dmesg shows my SATA disks at UDMA133 and 1.5 Gbps. Wireless PCMCIA/PC Card for CentOS 5.1?

Hello everyone, I would really like to get wireless working on my CentOS 5.1 install. I have a LinkSys WPC54G (I guess version 1 since no version is listed) but everything I've read indicates that this would be a nightmare for a Linux newbie like myself. I got as far as NDISWrapper, but right off the bat I am getting issues with KBuild and I guess my kernel source so I can't even get as far as compiling NDISWrapper. My question is mainly: Can anyone recommend a PC Card for a laptop that will work on CentOS without NDISWrapper? If not, is there an idiot guide for installing NDISWrapper on Centos? I have just migrated my Kerberos setup to a new machine (running inside Xen) and it is complaining at startup about the file contexts not being correct, even after running /sbin/fixfiles. On the previous machine I'm sure I had set SELinux to permissive and that's why it never complained. How to delete files with specical characters in the name?

Hi, I've got an odd situation here. Somehow, I find myself with two files that start with the - character. [eric@apollo mysql]$ ls -l total 93348 -rw-r--r-- 1 mysql mysql 9273344 Nov 13 19:03 -N=2007-11-08 -rw-r--r-- 1 mysql mysql 38879232 Nov 13 19:02 --newer=2007-11-08 Don't ask how they were created; something went wrong with a script at some point. My problem is that I am trying to delete them, but can't figure out how to delete these files. Everything I try, I get the same msg: [eric@apollo mysql]$ rm '-N=2007-11-08' rm: invalid option -- N Try `rm --help' for more information. I have tried single quotes, double quotes, escaping it with a \ and still get the same error. Any ideas / suggestions? Thanks! Eric

Hello, I just noticed that centosplus for c4 provides mysql 5.0.54, while centosplus for c5 does not provide that recent version and so c5 is stuck with mysql 5.0.22. Any particular reason for that or it is just that no one has yet compiled & packaged 5.0.5x for c5? Also, where does 5.0.54 comes from? When I installed CentOS it was with an old monitor, and it turned out that I could not get system-config-display to set it up correctly. I bought a new monitor and now all is well, except... It still boots to a text login, and I have to startx. What do I need to edit to change this? Thanks Anne

Can I remove X11 while keeping LSB compatibility?

Hi all, I have a Cent OS 5 box with a fairly full install which I'm trying to strip down. Since this machine will be running headless I would like to remove all of the X11 stuff which is installed on it. However, it seems that the "redhat-lsb" package, which I would like to keep, is dependent on X11 - redhat-lsb depends on /usr/bin/lpr - /usr/bin/lpr is provided by cups - cups depends on paps - paps depends on pango - pango depends on libX11 Is it possible to safely break this dependancy chain so that I keep redhat-lsb while removing X11? I'm trying to keep all of my package management restricted to 'yum' and I certainly want to avoid 'rpm -- nodeps'. Looking at /etc/alternatives/ makes me think there must be another package besides cups which provides /usr/bin/lpr but I can't seem to find it. I won't be doing any printing from this machine so I would even be happy with a dummy /usr/bin/lpr which simply throws away anything it receives. Thanks, - Richard

Problems logging out....

I just started having some trouble logging out from my CentOS 5.1 system. For some reason, when I try to log out, the log out program hangs. This happens whether I click on the "Log Out" button or wait for the timeout. When I looked, I somehow (I forget how) found out that the clock applet would not go away. However, when I separately killed the clock applet, the session still refused to log out. The only way I could get the session logged out was to kill the gnome-session process (works like a charm). I thought this might be related to the new xorg server update problem from upstream, but the new one doesn't fix it (not surprised). Any clues, or is this a gnome-only issue? Thanks. mhr

I would like to know if there is a good how-to that applies to Centos5 to achieve the following: Joining the centos machine to the AD domain (I believe I have done this already) Sharing files from it using the AD user object credentials (don't know how to do this yet, using system-config-samba-1.2.39, it does not show the domain users yet) Allowing login to centos using ssh or NX client (got the NX client working for root user and a local tesuser) using the <DOMAIN>\<windowsusername> credentials Correct configuration of the pam related files etc so that centos automatically creates and populates a user home directory for any first time logins I found the following article: http://www.nixadmins.net/modules.php?page=0%2C0 <http://www.nixadmins.net/modules.php?page=0%2C0&name=News&file=article&sid= 14> &name=News&file=article&sid=14 But I am a bit wary of editing files that I don't fully understand yet. Booting from Compact Flash

Hi all, Advance apologies if this is OT; if so, please mail me offlist. A client is considering using CentOS5.1 for an embedded project. They will be booting from Compact Flash. The CF in the device is being controlled by a VIA VT6421 SATA/RAID controller. Are there drivers available or must we truly 'roll our own' when compiling the 2.6x kernel for this? I've done some searching in the archives and on the site, but to no avail Also, are there any pitfalls we should be aware of up front? (any experience here is better than ours at this point!) centos authentication via ldap produces no name shell prompt

Hello, I'm trying to set up centos 5.1 to authenticate against an openldap server. I've got the authentication working, in that i can log in as a user contained within the ldap database but not in the system passwd/group files. The problem is instead of a prompt that for example looks like this: (username)@hostname:~/$ i'm getting this: (I have no name)@hostname:~/$ Aside from this everything works, i can finger, use id, etc. It's annoying and i'm thinking it might be a symptom of a misconfiguration. HowTo Recover Lost Data from LVM RAID1 ?

Guys, The other day while working on my old workstation it got frozen and after reboot I lost almost all data unexpectedly. I have a RAID1 configuration with LVM. 2 IDE HDDs. md0 .. store /boot (100MB) -------------------------- /dev/hda2 /dev/hdd1 md1 .. store / (26GB) -------------------------- /dev/hda3 /dev/hdd2 The only info that still rest in was that, that I restore after the fresh install. It seems that the disk were with problems and weren't syncing :(. This computer is old, Celeron 800MHz, 256MB of RAM and IDE disk too. I know that I have to suffer the consequences but if you know some way to recover some data, I'll appreciate it very much. These days I have been reading about: mdamd, and some way to recover but no success. I tried to boot from rescue mode with CentOS 5 first CD and do an fsck to /dev/hda3 and /dev/hdd2. After this something about superblock was told to me and that use the command e2fsck -b 8123 <device> (I don't remember the number exactly) but no success either. Hi, Yesterday I upgraded to latest X release and immediately after installing it before the X restart, my computer froze. when I rebooted it could not reboot with: raid1:sda2: rescheduling sector 185xyz.... The problem was my raid drives was bad. I recovered the data with SystemRescueCD. I use 2x500Gb software raid. simple script idea

Hi there... Foolish me.... all was going sooooooo well and then I got a wild hair and updated to the latest clamav .92 today. It is possible I should have just done an rpm update install yet there were some changes in ClamAV lately and I didn't know how well that would go. up till now I spec'd and rolled my own Clamav RPMs without milter somewhat recently ClamAV changed from having a clamav-server RPM file to not having it so I went to the magnificent Dag repo and snagged what I needed I did a yum remove and then a yum localinstall What I didn't think about was that the clamav user and group would be deleted and then re-created... which I think poor package management design, yet what do I know. Anyways, would some kind soul point me in the right direction or help me create a script that will traverse the proper parts of the filesystem and grep for files with UID and/or GID 46 please? Ive been fighting this for a coupla hours just scrounging around and fixing what I knew needed to be chown'd based upon errors in the logfiles etc... ;-> Phew!!! Thanks for pointers in advance - rh

modprobe.conf and ipv6

Greetings, Are these still valid modprobe.conf for centos 5 ? alias net-pf-10 off alias ipv6 off Secondly, Are they still valid in centos 5 for the same reasons we put them in the modprobe.conf for centos 4 ? The centos wiki says yes. It used to be a "speedup" issue in centos 4 among other things if I recall correctly. What I don't understand is, if you turn off ipv6 on the NICs, why do we have to do this in modprobe.conf? Thank you in advance. - rh

CentOS4.4 - Not booting up

Hi, I've been using an CentOS4.4 version. All was well till 2 days back. Suddenly when the PC was booted-up, it wouldn't bootup. It gets stuck displaying the following message. exec of init (/sbin/init) failed !!!: 80 umount /initrd/dev failed: 2 Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! I entered the rescue mode and attempted chroot /mnt/sysimage It spitted an error "chroot : cannot execute /bin/sh: Accessing a corrupted shared library." I tried to google-out the problem in vain Any clues as to whats the problem and the remedy? TIA, Balaji

Trouble with centos4 and jpackage - trying to install tomcat5

I've followed the installation instructions from jpackage.org: http://www.jpackage.org/installation.php 1) Install jpackage17.repo in yum.repos.d 2) Install jpackage-utils 3) Install jdk (I installed jdk 1.5.0_14) 4) Install -compat package (I installed java-1.5.0-sun-compat) 5) Select alternatives for java and javac. "/usr/sbin/alternatives --config java" gave me only one option to choose from /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun/bin/java(c) So I ran "yum install tomcat5" and after some time I got an error: --> Running transaction check --> Processing Dependency: jdk = 2000:1.5.0_14-fcs for package: java-1.5.0-sun-compat --> Finished Dependency Resolution Error: Missing Dependency: jdk = 2000:1.5.0_14-fcs is needed by package java-1.5.0-sun-compat I check my jdk: [root@smse2e FILES]# rpm -qa | grep jdk jdk-1.5.0_14-fcs I obviously got the jdk installed.
