SELinux issue

Hey all... not exactly an SELinux veteran, but am trying to work through some issues. Specifically, setting up a simple Samba configuration on a CentOS 5 machine. Determined I needed to do setsebool -P samba_enable_home_dirs 1 In order to get access to home directory shares working correctly. Fine; this is documented in samba_selinux(8). I decided to just do: setsebool -P smbd_disable_trans 1 And this cleared up the errors. Anyways, is this a bug? Seems like policy should allow smbd to work with its own logfiles.... Can file upstream if necessary, but starting here. Ray

Hi Friends, I am running Centos 5 64-bit on a Dell sever. I am trying to configure iptables for smtp traffic for which I need some help/guidance. The scenario is like this: On a linux box we have 3 public ips(eth1,eth2 and eth3) and 1 LAN IP(eth0). 2 public IPs are from the same service provider and 1 is from different service provider. eth3 and eth2 are from the same public provider but currently we are using only eth2 public ip There is a script which load balances the Internet Connection to both the Service providers through ip rule ip rule add from $publicip1 table 1 ip rule add from $publicip2 table 2 ip route add default scope global nexthop via $publicip1 dev eth1 weight 2 nexthop via $publicip2 dev eth2 weight 6 The problem we are facing is that we have 2 mx exchangers in our domain. Both the exchangers receives/sends the mails from the public ip like mx1 will receive/sends mails through eth1 (another service provider) mx2 will receive/sends mails through eth2 (another service provider) Accepting mails from public ip iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -d $publicip1 --dport 25 -j ACCEPT \ Natting rules iptables -A FORWARD -p tcp -d $smtpserver1 --dport 25 -j ACCEPT \ iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -d $publicip1 -p tcp --dport 25 -j DNAT --to $smtpserver1:25 \ Sending mails from smtpserver1 to publicip1 iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s $smtpserver1 -d 0/0 -o eth1 -j SNAT --to-source $publicip1 route add $smtpserver1 netmask 255.255.255.255 gw $publicip1 route add $publicip1 gw $gw1 Some more iptables rules which ban sending mails from different vlans/lans directly to public ips (both 1 and 2) $IPTABLES -A INPUT -p tcp -s $lan1 -d $publicip1 --dport $SMTP -j DROP \ $IPTABLES -A INPUT -p tcp -s $lan2 -d $publicip1 --dport $SMTP -j DROP \ $IPTABLES -A INPUT -p tcp -s $lan3 -d $publicip1 --dport $SMTP -j DROP \ Same rules we have for publicip2. But still we are not able to send emails from the $smtpserver running in the local lan to outside. Our requirement is like this smtpserver1 which is running postfix should only send/receive emails through publicip1 and smtpserver2 which is also running postfix should sends/receive mails through publicip2. We are able to receive emails both the public ips on the respective smtp servers but when we are sending emails to outside world it is sometimes going through both the public ips from a single smtp server. 5-in-1 Card Reader in Acer Extensa 5220

Hello, I have installed CentOS 5 (2.6.18-53.1.4.el5) on my new Acer Extensa 5220 notebook and everything seems to work fine except of the following: 1) Display is ok, but could maybe be better? The driver is set to 'vesa' but should be 'intel', in my opinion. But 'intel' isn't working in xorg.conf. 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) 2) The 5-in-1 Card Reader isn't working. 0f:06.2 Mass storage controller: Texas Instruments 5-in-1 Multimedia Card Reader (SD/MMC/MS/MS PRO/xD) 0f:06.3 Generic system peripheral [0805]: Texas Instruments PCIxx12 SDA Standard Compliant SD Host Controller 3) The wlan card isn't detected, but that's no problem. I will buy a ralink rt61 based pcmcia card which works great under my toshiba tecra notebook with CentOS 5. 04:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM94311MCG wlan mini-PCI (rev 01) 4) Suspend; not tested this yet So the only real problem is 2). OS: CentOS 5.1 x86. Hi, after applying the latest X.Org updates, applications have stopped running with an error message: "The program 'multiget' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'. (Details: serial 214 error_code 11 request_code 146 minor_code 5) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)" Just checked the Red Hat errata link: https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2008-0031.html and it says: "[Updated 18th January 2008] The original packages distributed with this errata had a bug which could cause some X applications to fail on 32-bit platforms. Having been accomodating about it in the past, the technical geniuses at Comcast have permanently blocked port 25, separating me (at my home office) from my employer's e-mail server. What can be done on the server side to keep Postfix listening on 25 _and_ accept my connections on some other port? Is there a Postfix solution? iptables maybe? Miark

VDQ : Triple Boot Advice?

Let me set up a Very Dumb Question (VDQ). My apologies in advance for repeating much of this to those who have been of such vast help getting me this far. (Followup to: is set as gmane.linux.redhat.fedora.general) I have a testbed machine which currently has /dev/hda1 - 6, according to qtparted, with sizes 102 MB, 14 GB, 13 GB, 13 GB, 12 GB, and 14 MB respectively (rounded to nearest whole MB or GB). It actually boots only Ubuntu, which is on hda5. hda1 is /boot, and hda6 is swap. I had CentOS alone on the whole hard drive, and found that Ubuntu 6.06 couldn't keep it, by any means I could find, using the GUI installer. (Dunno if that's anaconda or something else.) Getting Ubuntu 6.06-alternate instead, I tried to stumble and stagger through text-install and manual partitioning, both for the first time -- and, not surprisingly, eventually did get Ubuntu installed, only at the price of hosing CentOS. (If I were doing it all over, perhaps I should do the partitioning first and separately, with knoppix or gparted, or with qtparted if that has a live cd. Maybe I should Dban the whole shebang, and repartition first anyway ...) After much help, I concluded that that release of Ubuntu had also been a mistake : getting my must-have apps onto it cost lots of grief, and the most essential, Alpine 1.0, never made it at all. That means I can't yet give Ubuntu a fair test as to filling my needs. So now I want to install CentOS 5.1 again, Ubuntu 7.10, and Fedora 8. The VDQ comes in three parts. First, the sequence : I'd prefer to put the new Ubuntu onto one of the 13 GB partitions, and make it end up second in boot sequence. I *think* I'll be safer to install it first in time, and with the GUI .iso, *not* with the text-install, which I lack the savvy to use. Can I do that? Or does installing it first in time force me to use the first free partition? (If it does, but lets me keep the rest of the setup, I'd rather live with it than tackle the text-install again, let alone re-partition.) Second, also about the sequence : given that all I've ever really run has been RedHat or Fedora (but I've been doing that since RH7), will I be any better off installing one of them before the other? Third, does anyone know of an example somewhere of a grub.conf, for a machine running three linuces, which I can manage to clone once I do get all three installed? I'm assuming that each OS will have a way of booting itself once I get to it, and that the first and hardest job will be instructing grub how to get to each, in a way that enables it to update for itself whenever any of the three gets a fresh kernel on some update. Is that right? My experience in the past has been that grub is everywhere dense, as the mathematicians say. Not in this life will I get my head far enough around it to have a real grasp of how to configure it -- not and get it right. Man grub and its ilk wear out my fingernails as I try to climb the walls. Possibly OT: FreeNX and Gnome Language

If this is too far off topic please let me know and I'll send this to the Gnome list or something. Today I recently had a thai friend want to experience linux. Their limitation is language of course. I set up an account for my friend and had them log in after changing through GDM their language preferences to Thai. The Thai language shows up for me when I log in as the user on the machine. I read several posts notably the following: http://mail.kde.org/pipermail/freenx-knx/2006-August/003967.html I attempted to accomplish this with those instructions and end up with a whole lot of fail. I assume I am misunderstanding something very basic because the user still is presented with an English desktop when they login through nx. I also tried the following trick of editing their ~/.dmrc to provide the language environment, but unless you login through gdm (as I read from google searches) this file is skipped. Has anyone encountered this and come up with a solution? Or is there a way to refine my google search in some way to provide better information for me? I appreciate any help anyone can provide. problem with firefox

Just out of curiosity, has anyone noticed a problem that has developed with firefox? This started on both of my machines after the newest updates. I'll be at a website, even the mozilla website, and when I click on a link to go to another part of the site or to download a file, Firefox will just simply close. It's random for the most part, but it happened quite often at the sourceforge.net website too. I'm not having this problem with Seamonkey. Jim

HP Autoloader

Hi, I need to backup data to an HP autoloader, it needs to be *full* backups each time so using Amanda doesn't make sense. Can someone point me to what utilities to use to access the autoloader, I would rather read up on this myself as my knowledge here is very weak. I am moving this unit from a windows environment running Backup Exec. I know all of those features won't be available but I was hoping to control in some predictable manner what tapes are used in what order to effectively partition the loader. Thanks, jlc

Centos 5 File Server X-Windows problem

I have a file server that runs a virtual machine that suddenly blanked its display. I can switch to <ctrl><alt><f1>, but switching back to <ctrl><alt><f7> just gives me a blank screen (no cursor). There are no entries in /var/log/messages or in /var/log/Xorg.0.log that might explain what happened. I was running IceWM, but I can't find any logs for it at all. ~/.xsession-errors shows nothing useful, either. ( And was last updated 10 days ago. ) Anyone have an idea what happened? ( Or how to figure out what happened? )

Recover lost data from LVM RAID1

Guys, The other day while working on my old workstation it get frozen and after reboot I lost almost all data unexpectedly. I have a RAID1 configuration with LVM. 2 IDE HDDs. md0 .. store /boot (100MB) -------------------------- /dev/hda2 /dev/hdd1 md1 .. store / (26GB) /dev/hda3 /dev/hdd2 The only info that still rest in was that, that I restore after the fresh install. It seems that the disk were with problems and weren't syncing :(. These days I have been reading about: mdamd, and some way to recover but no success: I tried to boot from rescue mode with CentOS 5 first CD and do an fsck to /dev/hda3 and /dev/hdd2. After this something about superblock was told to me and that use the command e2fsck -b 8123 <device> (I don't remember the number exactly) but no success either. Do you have some idea ? xscreensaver lock problem resolved!

Hello to all: I'd like to thank everyone who offered insight to why xscreensaver lock wasn't working. Just this morning I performed a last-minute search, based on some leads, of possible pam configuration issues. One URL that popped up via google was http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/libs//pam/FAQ Q9 contained a lead to make `which xlock` setuid root (chmod +s). I did this for `which screensaver`, rebooted, and authentication worked! So that was an unexpected change, but documented from a reliable source. I hope this maybe helps someone else who may hit some of the same obstacles as I. A good weekend to all, and stay tuned for more questions... :-) Scott

What libs req'd to resolve DNS within a chroot jail?

Hi, I've been working at getting a tftp server up an running in a chroot jail, and I have finally succeed getting almost everything working. The server itself works fine, however, it is implemented as a tcpwrapper application (ie: in.tftpd) and I am having trouble getting it to resolve DNS names. I copied my /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny in my chroot/etc folder, however, they only work properly if I provide IP addresses. If I use FQDN, they fail. For instance, in hosts.allow: in.tfptd: 192.168.1.101 allow works fine But the following fails in.tftptd: eric.test.com allow I'm assuming I am missing a library/libraries in my chroot jail, but am not sure which ones. I've got all the libs req'd by ldd, but I am guessing there is something else that I am missing. Any suggestions? Thanks! Eric

Mounting /var directory to a new HardDisk

Hi, I have a mailgw running Centos where trendmicro(IMSS) is installed. it works perfectly. Now, the problem is it is running out of Harddisk. pls see below and pay attention to / file system (/dev/sda6), where only 1.3 gb is available. these are not Logical volums (LVM) [root@gateway 17141]# df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda6 9.7G 7.9G 1.3G 87% / /dev/sda1 99M 9.2M 85M 10% /boot /dev/sda5 15G 11G 3.5G 75% /opt none 627M 0 627M 0% /dev/shm I checkd with du -h. then, I saw /var has 7.1 gb. I've used bacula in production at a few sites, it has all the enterprise features, except a good GUI ;-) It can control autoloaders and do full backups each night etc. http://bacula.org Typically, people use 'mt' to control autoloaders from the CLI. Desktop freeze... now what?

Hi, I installed CentOS 5 on a client's machine yesterday afternoon. He phoned me in the evening to tell me that his desktop "froze several times upon him", and he had to hard-reboot it. The last time this happened to me was with some exotic wireless card whose driver had problems with SMP. But here, I have no wireless card. So the only suspect is the NVidia Geforce 4000 card. The only non-standard thing I did in my install was to install the proprietary NVidia driver from nvidia.com. I knew afterwards this was not a good thing to do, since the RPMForge repos do have an nvidia-legacy drivers. I remembered this too late. Anyway. I'm due to return to the client in a few hours time next morning. I wonder if reverting from "nvidia" to "nv" in xorg.conf could solve my problem. As for updates, the system is up to date. But I admit I'm a bit clueless. Any suggestions? Niki

Add more space to LVM

I have a database server that is running out of space. All my databases are being stored in a 80G /opt partition. Because I'm using LVM, wouldn't I be able to pop the HDDs (a h/w raid volume) in, add it to the LVM, and resize my ext3 /opt partition? Everything that I've been reading says this is possible, but I'm not sure. Has anyone done this and are there any pitfalls to watch out for? Is there a better way? I've thought about just rebuilding the server and restoring the databases from a backup on the new setup. Any suggestions on proper path would be appreciated. I'm running the current version of CentOS 5. Regards, Todd

I want a tool that will allow me to download files from a webdev site. All I have found is the other direction: my files to a webdav server. In particular (some of you might be interested) is the whole IEEE 802.11 meeting documents webdav site: https://mentor.ieee.org/802.11/documents https://mentor.ieee.org/802.11/public/07/11-07-0767-00-0000-new-802-11-work… explains the 'new' system. http://dav.mentor.ieee.org:80/ is where you can do bulk download, but I need a tool for that.... BTW, you cannot get draft or final standards docs from here. You have to attend a meeting to get the password to the member's only section where the standards docs are.... March meeting is in Orlando, FL. See you there if you can make it!

ntpd stuck on stratum 16 = not synced

Maybe there's an ntp expert out there who can help me with this. I have an NTP server serving our local network. It is set up to use pool.ntp.org servers for it's upstream sync. ntpq -p reveals that the server is stuck on stratum 16, which I understand means "not synced". The clients are unable to sync with my local server because of this. sound conversion assistance

OK, I downloaded a batch of ".rm" audio files from the net. I can play them with mplayer or realplayer, but how can I convert them to something else, e.g. mp3, etc.? So far haven't unearthed any tools that can both read them and write out in another format. Capturing Packets -- Ethereal

This may be off topic, but I think my ethereal question might be simple enough. I am presently compiling ethereal on a CentOS platform to check it out. But the packets I want to monitor are actually on a different CentOS platform, and I'd rather not install Ethereal on it, if for no other reason I don't have X-Windows installed on that platform. My question is, can I monitor/write packets to a file on the more remote machine, and then analyze the packets on another machine using my ethereal SW? Can I sniff the packets on the remote w/o a full install of ethereal? === Al

screen locking - pam and xscreensaver

For an out-of-box Centos install that utilizes PAM for xscreensaver within both gnome and kde, what factors would lead to xscreensaver not being able to properly unlock the user? I reviewed the logs and nothing helped. I performed ldd on xscreensaver and an ls -l on each dependency proved they were all there. The system uses local /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files for authentication - no NIS or LDAP or Kerberos. If Xwindows was to be disabled, and only tty was used, what would be the best option for ensuring the logged-in session was locked after a determined amount of inactivity> Also, if the user stepped away from the system and wanted to manually lock it, what is the best tty screen-locking utility? I reviewed vlock, but after prompting me for my password, it then prompted for root's. That was less than helpful. Thanks. Scott

Depending on the BIOS options, you may be able to set the SATA to "no auto-detect" and "no drive". The kernel should still probe the SATA channel and give you access to the drive once the system is up. This is highly BIOS dependent but I've seen it work as described when the BIOS supports it. It's kind of strange that the BIOS is complaining about "secondary drive 1 not found". Sounds like a BIOS bug. Is there a BIOS update available? Cheers, Dave -- Politics, n.
