My company supplies me with a very nice HP nc2400. Much faster, more memory, etc than my old HP nc4010. Problem is the drive is not swappable, and they encrypt the drive (the OS is XP). The nc2400 has a DVD/CDRW and 2 USB 2.0 ports so I was thinking..... Make a Live DVD with everything I need but map /etc /root /home and /var/log (and what else?) to a USB flash drive (16Gb are available and I was just sent a PR on a 32Gb, maybe I can get an eval device :) ). So first I would want a bootable DVD that would have everything I want to have running on the cd2400. And of course, everytime one of the components get updated, I will have to build a new DVD. Then I would like to run within XEN my company's XP image on that encrypted drive. Is this possible. If I could do this, I can move the nc2400 as my 'workhorse', downgrade my nc4010 to my test box, and reallocate the Toshiba 3490 to the family.... And more importantly one less box to carry when traveling! I guess one thing in this whole equation will I be able to repartition the USB flash drive with a swap partition (will probably never use, as there is 1.5Gb memory in the nc2400. Twice as much as the nc4010), and an ext3 data partition? Or should I use LVM on it?

Intel SRCS16 Controllers

I have a centos box with a few of these in it. Its shipped monitoring/alerting software needs X, and this server only has a console installed. Does anyone have any experience with or a suggestion on how I could monitor these cards with something 3rd party based that doesn't need a gui, or Java at that matter! Thanks! jlc

aacraid hard/firmware differences?

This isn't really a Centos question but it affects the systems so I'll ask here anyway. I've noticed when swapping disks around on IBM 3550 boxes that some of them see one more cylinder on drives than others but I can't find any settings or differences that might control this. It's an obvious problem when you fdisk/format on the one that sees the additional cylinder, then move or copy this disk to one that doesn't. Does anyone know what controls this or if it is just a hardware or firmware version difference? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

Strange Problem with dm-0

I began an update of one of our servers via yum and, coincidentally or not, I have been getting the following logged into the message file since: messages:Jan 7 15:55:51 inet07 kernel: post_create: setxattr failed, rc=28 (dev=dm-0 ino=280175) Now, this tells me that dev dm-0 is out of space but, what is dm-0? Switching screen resolution on the fly

Is there any way other than CTL ALT + and CTL ALT - to set and or change the resolution of the X server when I want to. Is there a way to so take me to "1920x1080" mode and then later take me to "1366x768" mode. With xvidtune I see the -next and -prev options but I was hoping for jumping to specific modes. I so realize I can also edit out unwanted modes in the xorg.conf but I'd rather not manually change items on a machine. Thanks, Jerry

ARGH!!! Instal fails at drive format time

Got all the way through the selection of packages. All those time consuming tasks and the install got to formating the drive and crashed on a format error! Since I know exactly how I want to lay out the partitions, is there a way I can boot from CD, and get into Disk Druid to set the partitions and do the formating. Then when I come to the install just select to keep the drive how it is? And I have to have LVM....

Migrating software raid from SUSE 9.0 to Centos 5

I have a SUSE 9.0 box with a software raid. It consists of 6 IDE drives and three different controllers The OS is on a separate drive. What I want to do is put a new boot drive in load Centos on it. Then I want to be able to mount the raid without loosing any of the data on it. What information do I need from the SUSE OS (raid info etc...) to tell Centos how to recognize it? The data is backup on DVD's but it would be a real pain to reload it.(its around a terabyte of data) So I'm writing here for some advice. I've setup many raids in the past but only fresh installs. DRBD NFS load issues

My NFS setup is a heartbeat setup on two servers running Active/Passive DRBD. The NFS servers themselves are 1x 2 core Opterons with 8G ram and 5TB space with 16 drives and a 3ware controller. They're connected to a HP procurve switch with bonded ethernet. The sync-rates between the two DRBD nodes seem to safely reach 200Mbps or better. The processors on the active NFS servers run with a load of 0.2, so it seems mighty healthy. Until I do a serious backup. I have a few load balanced web nodes and two database nodes as NFS clients. When I start backing up my database to a mounted NFS partition, a plain rsync drives the NFS box through the roof and forces a failover. I can do my backup using --bwlimit=1500, but then I'm not anywhere close to a fast backup, just 1.5MBps. My backups are probably 40G. (The database has fast disks and between database copies I see run at up to 60MBps - close to 500Mbps). I obviously do not have a networking issue. The processor loads up like this: bwlimit 1500 load 2.3 bwlimit 2500 load 3.5 bwlimit 4500 load 5.5+ The DRBD secondary seems to run at about 1/2 the load of the primary. What I'm wondering is--why is this thing *so* load sensitive? Is it DRBD? Is it NFS? I'm guessing that since I only have two cores in the NFS boxes that a prolonged transfer makes NFS dominates 1 core and DRBD dominate the next, and so I'm saturating my processor. Thots? Jed

/etc/passwd aand /etc/shadow out of sync on 4.6 box

Fellow list members, I recently tried to add a user to a little used server that hadn't see a change in users for quite a while. When I use system-config-users I get an error alert that says - The user database cannot be read. This problem is most likely caused by a mismatch in /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow. The program will exit now. I awk'ed out the user ID's and ran diff. That came back with the shadow file having two more users than the passwd file. Ok, fine, whatever. But the trick now is how to fix this. Can I just use vi and delete the offending lines from the shadow file? Is there a utility or script that will sync them in a less potentially destructive way? PXE problem after CentOS reboot

Dear folks, We are installing a large diskless cluster using CentOS 5.1. The hardware is pretty new - Supermicro X7DWT boards with Harpertown CPUs. Unfortunately we have some PXE-related problems described by the following scenario: 1) Set up DHCP, TFTP and NFS on a server, prepare PXE kernel and initrd - fine. 2) Start up the node using PXE for the first time - fine. 3) Reboot the node - PXE boot fails for all next attempts. We see that a server gets DHCP requests and answers them, but a node doesn't response with DHCP ack. After that we can boot CentOS again. 6) When Linux is loaded, if we reboot a node using "bmc power cycle" instead of reboot or shutdown, a node will boot for the next time without problems 7) There are no problems with a second GbE interface (without IPMI) 8) So our guess is that Linux on a reboot leaves Ethernet device in some state that cause brain damage for IPMI+PXE combination. We tried to play with some e1000 driver options, we are also tried latest Intel driver - nothing helps. Do you have any idea what goes wrong? Any help will be much appreciated. Yum-update error

tomcat still sees jvm version 1.4.2 in Cent OS 5

i chose to install tomcat during the OS install as well as java....however, since I needed to use a different jvm, i used the method described in http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/JavaOnCentOS for Sun jdk 1.5.0_13 and it worked fine as I can tell, as using the alternatives --config java command, i see both 1.4.2 and 1.5.0 versions and choosing the 1.5.0 version yields the right version when doing a "java -version" command....also doing a "which java" also points to the right location for the java 1.5.0 install...everything appears fine except that tomcat still sees java 1.4.2 as its jvm version... How do I blank or overwrite DVD-RW disks in CentOS 5?

I'm trying to use DVD-RW ("minus RW") disks in my LG GSA-4040B drive. I can write a new disk just fine, but can't find any way to blank or re-use a disk. When I run xcdroast and click on the "Blank CD/DVD+-RW" button, I get "Error while blanking." Windows has no problem and will run just fine (so I believe this is not a hardware issue). Interestingly, this machine worked fine for several weeks and one day decided to crash within the first few seconds of boot. I have tried with several kernel, including the latest one as of today: not working any better. If I boot the CentOS DVD, when it comes to searching for existing CentOS installation, it will crash just the same. If I format the linux partition, I can then re-install CentOS, update it just fine... Then a few days later it will crash just the same right after booting. This machine is running a Gigabyte P35-DS3P motherboard, with 2GB of DDR2-667MHz RAM, an Intel core-duo quad: Q6600. It has two 250GB hard drive in RAID1 using the bios RAID support (so I can have RAID on both Windows and Linux). It's running the 32 bits version of CentOS 5 Any ideas what the problem could be? nForce 630i Chipset, unable to get integrated nic working

Hello everyone, I've also posted this onto the Network support forums but figured I'd shoot it to the mailing list as well. I recently purchased a ECS GF7100PVT-M motherboard and now I'm wishing I'd investigated driver support a little better before I did! I was able to get Centos 5.1 XEN Kernel installed but have been having a helluva time getting the on board NIC going. The MB is running a nForce 630i chipset and has the nic card listed as a Realtek 8111B. I've downloaded what I believe to be the latest Realtek drivers and if I do an lsmod I can see the r8168 module present. I've tried adding the line alias eth0 r8168 to my /etc/modprobe.conf file but it hasn't gotten me anywhere, I've also tried with Nvidia's forcedeth module to no avail. Does anyone have some ideas of what I could try next? Do I need a newer version of the forcedeth driver? Is this chipset not going to work with Centos 5.1? Is it a Xen related issue? lspci shows "Ethernet controller: nVidia Corporation Unknown device 07dc (rev a2)" Any thoughts/pointers would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance, David

Iptables and impersonating another O/S

i have a CentOS 5.1 server running sshd (exposed to the outside world). i'd like to use iptables to fool nmap into thinking i'm running another O/S. e.g.: iptables -t mangle -A PREROUTING -d 192.168.0.64 -j PERS \ --tweak dst --local --conf /etc/personalities/macos9.conf iptables -t mangle -A OUTPUT -d 192.168.0.64 -j PERS \ --tweak src --local --conf /etc/personalities/macos9.conf all of the tutorials on iptables i've found take me through steps that involve a kernel recompile ... do i really need to do this? is there a tutorial that provides a somewhat large degree of detail on how to do what i'm interested in doing? i haven't compiled a kernel in approx. a decade (slackware). of course, i'd like to avoid the kernel recompile if possible. thanks --tom

mounting & partitioning Seagate FreeAgent external HD

Hi all, As a disclaimer, I'm new to this list and very green administering CentOS. I run it on my test servers and do very basic networking and server administration (most users, permissions, and web app stuff). I have a backup server that I am using rsync to collect important in-process file for our digital library from both Windows and Linux servers, as well as a specific applications which are updated on a separate test server. This backup server ran out of space and I have no more internal slots available to add another disk, so I bought a 750 GB Seagate FreeAgent external USB hard drive. I've seen some various issues out there about how Seagate FA HDs go into sleep mode when used in the manner I want to, but all of the people posting about that seemed to be able to mount theirs with no problem. I can see the device in my /proc/bus/usb/devices file, but fdisk -l doesn't show it at all. I was trying to mount and partition it using Webmin, but I can't figure out the device name I need to give it to mount and partition it. How is the best way to figure that out? Long time waiting on boot

I just installed Centos 5.1 with XEN on my HP nc2400 duo core and there are two problems out the starting gate: Oh, I am booting off a 40Gb 2.5" drive on a USB adapter. The internal hard drive is encrypted and not usable right now (until I get XEN figured out). But I don't think it has a bearing... The system hangs for some reason at various points. When first starting up graphic (you know, when the screen goes from character mode to graphic and you can then follow the boot by pressing <alt-D>. When bringing up loopback When bringing up eth0 (dhcp server very reachable) When starting mcstransd (whatever that is) When starting system message bus When starting some bluetooth service (the first boot but not after the yum update) When starting Avahi deamon (timeout out and failed during this long wait, I should turn that service off anyway) When starting HAL (the first boot but not after the yum update) Each hangup is a few minutes! Then the system continues. I did not see anything of note in /var/log Second issue, the external video. I cannot not turn it on. This HP notebook does not offer any BIOD control of the external monitor. There is a 'presentation' button right above the keyboard you are suppose to press to toggle the external video. It does nothing. Well I do hear the drive spinning so the system is trying something? I should point out that my XP boot off the internal harddrive sometimes 'looses' the external video, and I have to go into display control and turn off then on the 'presentation' option. This could work out GREAT if I can get a few more things working (and learn XEN to boot the XP in a window).

Mail server setup for small ISP

Hi, I will probably have to design an e-mail (and other components) infrastructure for a small ISP soon (WISP). I'm doing some research to determine which components would be best to offer e-mail services to their client and allow the staff to manage accounts easily. I usually use virtual machines a lot for isolation and easy backups and migration (when a hardware node is underpowered, it is easy to migrate one or more virtual machines to another hardware node easily). I have looked at iSCSI and drbd for high-availability of the storage: http://www.pcpro.co.uk/realworld/82284/san-on-the-cheap/page1.html. This looks like it should be doing a great job of high availability storage. For mail server, I guess I should look at an MTA and IMAP/POP server that supports LDAP and/or MySQL for users. Postfix should be a good choice for MTA, as I know it (at least a little, but I know sendmail better). For IMAP/POP, I'm not sure... Would dovecot be sufficient, or should I try cyrus. I'd rather use components that are available for base or extras repository (or rpmforge). I think that squirrelmail and horde would do a good job for webmail. There shoudn't be any troubles having some redundancy for DNS, web servers, mtas, but what about IMAP/POP? linux-HA? MySQL replication should be enough, I guess. Or maybe linux-HA as well. I wonder if I should add GFS to the mix to have multiple IMAP/POP servers use the same storage. Or maybe IMAP proxies? Any insights welcome :). Ugo

I am looking at K12LTSP-EL5 which is Centos 5 based. Supposedly their disc2 maps to Centos 1of6 and so forth. I have a repo of the Centos 5.1 isos: /centos/5/os/i386 The question is can I put the K12LTSP disc 1 in a directory: /centos/k12ltsp-el5/i386 then with some logical link magic make this directory appear to have all 7 CDs worth of content? Or put the k12 disc 1 somewhere else and do 2 logicla mappings into one directory?

I want to install Hylafax+, IAXmodem, and T38modem on my Trixbox 2.4 which is built on Centos 5.1 ("vmlinuz-2.6.18-53.1.4.el5"). Over at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=148904 there are Hylafax+ rpms for: Fedora 7,8 Fedora Core 2,5,6 Redhat 7,9 I **think** Fedora Core 6? IAXmodem is only available in source at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=148814 (TB only has it an rpm for Centos 4.x). So if anyone knows of an rpm of iaxmodem 1.0 for Centos 5.... And T38modem is a real challenge to find....

rhel source to updates?

I noticed on the rhel errata page: http://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHEA-2008-0001.html that they have made a configuration change to fontconfig for the liberation fonts. I have the liberation fonts installed via rebuild of fedora 8 src.rpm - including a fontconfig file. I'm guessing the update will come through CentOS at some point and I'm trying to make sure there isn't a file conflict with my rpm and the update that would prevent installation - but I can't seem to find the sources for rhel updates. I'm kicking myself because I found them before, didn't bookmark them, but I can't seem to find them now. http://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/updates/enterprise/ doesn't seem to have anything for rhel5 The files in my f8 liberation rebuilt that I'm worried about conflicting with the update are: /etc/X11/fontpath.d/liberation-fonts /etc/fonts/conf.d/59-liberation-fonts.conf I'm a little bit amazed that they are including an update for a configuration for fonts they don't seem to package, not sure why they are doing it - that doesn't seem to be their style, but anyway, does anyone know who mirrors the rhel src.rpm updates for free software packages?

System drops off network after a few minutes

I have an Intel SE7525RP2 motherboard with a Yukon Marvel (82541GB controller) NIC in it. After installing CentOS 5.1 it functions fine for some minutes then looses network connectivity. By coincidence, I was using the system to clean some HD's for another and had booted off Knoppix and noticed it never exhibited this behavior, the network remained functional even overnight when I returned to the system? I looked through messages and didn't see anything NIC/network related, can anyone suggest something to check? Thanks! jlc

Whenever it gets here I'll be updating to 5.1 but in the mean time there's some security fixes that have come down the pipe which I can't update to due to yum being petulant. centos 5.1 fresh install of ipvsadm: service won't start: config missing

Hello all, I have ipvsadm-1.24 installed, and there's an error when the service starts: Applying IPVS configuration: /etc/init.d/ipvsadm: line 62: /etc/sysconfig/ipvsadm: No such file or directory is the install broken? Pidgin and (lack of) sound on CentOS 4.6

When I start pidgin from the Applications -> Internet -> Internet Messenger menu, my sound device stops working. I think this has something to do with the Gnome applet. I appear to end up with two (sometimes more) copies of the "gaim" process running -- such that if I use the right-button menu on the Gnome applet to quit pidgin, a login dialog is stil left behind and sometimes won't exit. I'm guessing these multiple gaim processes somehow deadlock the sound device, such that even after I kill them, no other process can play audio. Pidgin/gaim itself can't play sounds in this condition, either. I've tried using "lsof" to find all processes that have the sound device open and force them to exit or restart, but that doesn't help. Once the sound goes out, only a reboot brings it back. The flash and mplayer plugins for firefox/seamonkey are still able to play (silent) video in this condition, but starting up e.g. gmplayer blocks forever trying to open the sound device. Googling turned up this: http://blog.turbulentsky.com/2007/12/pidgin-has-no-sound-in-ubuntu-gutsy.ht… but I have no reason to be confident that would apply to CentOS. Searching on gaim instead of pidgin finds stuff that's four years old and almost certainly not relevant. Unfortunately I don't have much experience with audio apps on linux (or anywhere else, for that matter). I've never had any luck creating a .asoundrc or trying to get all my applications to agree on whether to use ALSA instead of OSS (although I take it OSS is pretty much obsolete now, I don't even know if the kernel in RHEL4 is recent enough to use ALSA by default). So if anyone has any clues to share on how to go about diagnosing this, I'd appreciate the help. xen dependencies

It appears that if I perform an install of CentOS 5.1 without changing *anything* in the options, then do a #yum groupinstall 'Virtualization' I can now get Xen to function in bridged mode (it has network connectivity). In lieu of this, can anyone shed some light on what dependency Xen has that is not installed when you do a completely bare install and execute a #yum install xen? I am hoping to finally end up with a minimum install of CentOS with Xen functioning without a gui or any additional services that won't be needed. Thanks! jlc

John Rosatti, Excavators, 3D, NASA and Why Should I care? Well, because! There are two definitions for excavator; one is any person engaging in excavation is called an excavator. The second definition of excavator is, of course, the vehicles called excavators, which are sometimes called diggers, trackhoes, fronthoes, and 360-degree excavators or just 360. This is not to be confused with Microsoft's vertical technology and news search engine called Excavator or xcavator, as one has nothing to do with the other. Here we're talking about heavy duty digging machines, even though several manufacturers like John Deere, offer Compact, Midsize, and Large Excavators ranging from 0-6 metric tons for the compact excavators, 6 to 40 metric tons for the midsize, and 40 to 85 for large John Deere excavators. Additionally there exist mini-excavators, made by another manufacturer, that will fit through a door. In case you're now wondering what 3D and VRML, or actually x3D has to do with excavators, that is something we will be getting to in other articles, for right now you'll just have to trust that there is a fit. For now, however, let's get back to excavators, the digging machines used for, but not limited to: Digging, demolition, minning, river dredging, heavy lifting, and with hydraulic attachments, brush cutting. It is these same hydraulic attachments that have expanded the use of excavators, far beyond their original use of excavation such as the Low-energy Planetary Excavator (LPE) proposed by NASA. The latest paper to be found on this Nasa proposal is for 2006, so the current status can only be guessed at, nevertheless, the concept is certainly intriguing as are the LPE's possible commercial applications. Basically, The LPE would be a general-purpose machine with the ability to mine ice, regolith, and rock; it would also support construction activities. The purpose and application is meant for future manned and unmanned missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. .Additionally, adaptations could be made for use in extreme-low gravity such as on asteroids. This idea of efficient and reliable an excavator that has usage on differing planetary surfaces and various materials has the goal of enabling exploration and bases from outposts to self-sustaining complexes. The LPE would be able to accommodate the different materials that are encountered on planetary surfaces as the LPE would sense geologic changes and respond to them by using the lowest cutting energy possible. Moving on the to the possible non-NASA commercial application it can be said that the same qualities of the LPE that apply to space would also attract terrestrial users or said differently, us earth bound creatures. As both business and government markets rapidly expand, so does the need for urban infrastructure. Using NASA's own words on the subject; "Urban construction settings restrict the use of explosives, to minimize damaging vibrations, making mechanical methods attractive. In addition, shallow tunnel construction is rapidly changing from cut-and-cover to wholly underground, because excavations disrupt city traffic. Coupled with increasing population, these factors enhance the market for innovatively flexible systems such as the LPE".If I could have said it better than NASA did, I would have. But I couldn't, so I didn't. cluster suite & gfs problem since update

I have a cluster that has been operational for some time and functioning flawlessly until a recent yum update. The last unflawed working kernel was 2.6.9-55.0.12.ELsmp. The current kernel is 2.6.9-67ELsmp. The problem appears to be some type of infinite recovery loop of sorts. It runs find for a few minutes, then the service restarts itself. What I am seeing in /var/log/messages is: Jan 3 11:17:47 engrfs1 clurgmgrd: [5614]: <err> nfsclient:skynet_disted is missing! Dump levels?

I created a cron job to invoke a dump script according to Tower Of Hanoi. I am dumping a subdirectory and a filesystem. The backup script, with some other lines removed: /path/to/dump -0 -fv /dev/nst0 /var/log /path/to-dump -3 -fv /dev/nst0 /home When viewing the dump logs, it looks like it is taking the whole job as a level 0. Am missing something? Thanks. Scott

We have a RHEL2 server that has had one of the drives in the raid array fail. I would like to do a full backup of the system before we replace the raided drive, in case the second drive decides to die during the procedure. What is the recommended way to back up a linux system? I was thinking of doing a snapshot, but the system is ext3 with no LVM. It has been suggested to hook up a usb drive and do an rsync of /. Are there any better solutions? The reason I wanted a snapshot is that I wanted to get an image of the disk, so that I wouldn't have to reinstall and reconfigure all the apps. Russ

Do what I do when I need to setup a new Linux facility. Google "linux audit" I remember getting a good hit near the top with that. There are cli tools for adding files/folders/mounts to the audit system and you can tailor which type of activity to audit. These resorts have everything you need under one roof, all within the grounds of the resort, so that you may not even have to leave the resort after you arrive! One tip here ? find your best rate by shopping online, and then invest a bit in long distance calls to see if you can get a better rate by calling the hotel or resort directly. Many times this is possible, and it can make your Jamaica vacation even better. The one thing that people complain about is the phone service in Jamaica. It is not the best. But then again, you took a Jamaica vacation to RELAX, so why are you worried about the telephones? Get away from the phones and checking in with the office. Really, they can go on without you and will still open for business tomorrow. Long distance calls that originate in Jamaica are costly, so be sure you bring your calling card that allows for an international origin if you anticipate really needing to make a phone call. Most everybody has heard of someone buying a "run down" house for a good price well below market value, fixing it up and selling it at a fair market price. Flipping a "fixer-upper" is definitely one way to turn a reasonably quick profit. I know some people who do it this way but they are more into the contractor and renovation business than they are of the investor mindset. Some of these "fixer-upper" properties are in need of extensive repair and will involve electrical work, carpentry work, etc. If the investor gets involved and does some or all of this work then there could be enough profit there but if the investor farms out the required labour, profits could get eaten up quickly. For these types of flipping real estate investments, the purchase price needs to be at a huge discount and normally would be found somewhere in the foreclosure stage. For the person that is in the mindset of investing rather than being in the renovation business then flipping real estate will only involve flipping the paper contract of the property without even taking possession of it. You can flip by entering an agreement to buy a property then sell the contract to another investor before close of escrow. Using this technique won't even require you to put your name on the title. Profits will generally be less than the fixer-upper investor but involves much less work and the whole process is much quicker. A fixer-upper investor would not be happy in making a profit of a few thousand dollars for a few months work on renovations but an investor that can just flip a contract for a few hours or days work would be. Avoid disclosure of your profits to the new buyer by using a double closing. After making a sweet deal and flipping a contract involving a juicy profit you may not want all these details to be revealed to your buyer. The solution is a double closing, transferring the property to you initially and then reselling immediately at the same lawyer's office just an hour later to your buyer. There is a drawback here and that is a double set of closing costs so you would have to weigh it out to see if it's worth it to your particular situation or not. Further, you can use a title insurance company for the actual closings. For the issuance of the title insurance policy, the title insurance company will prepare the closing documents and close the transaction usually without an addition charge.
